Appendix A · Academic Notes Index

So as not to disturb the recollecting mind, the main text has kept canonical catalog numbers and the sources of the patriarchs' commentaries entirely out of its pages. This appendix puts them back — a chapter-by-chapter list of sources, for the reader willing to check further and walk deeper.

The index follows the order of the book's chapters. For each chapter, it lists the principal scriptures and the patriarchal treatises and commentaries on which that chapter rests. Numbering conventions: T refers to the Taishō Shinshū Daizōkyō (e.g. T0360 is text no. 360 of the Taishō canon); X refers to the Manji Shinsan Zokuzōkyō (e.g. X0424). Dates, fascicle numbers, and chapter divisions are supplied wherever they matter for the reader's verification.

  • Sūtras: Samantabhadra Practice-Vows chapter (T0293, the reverence prose: all Buddhas throughout the realm of dharma and the realm of space; "deep faith and understanding, as if before my very eyes"; one body bowing in full to Buddhas as the dust of lands; "when the realm of space is exhausted, my reverencing shall be exhausted"; the reverence verse, "in all the worlds of the ten directions … each bowing in full to Buddhas as the dust of lands," "deeply do I believe the Buddhas fill it all")
  • Note: "moment by moment continuous, without interruption; my actions of body, speech, and mind without weariness" is the shared closing formula of all ten vows, requoted in every chapter of this part; "as if before my very eyes = recollection" is the book's own linkage back to Part One.

7.3 Praise the Tathāgatas (vow 2; per NIAN-P26)

  • Sūtras: Samantabhadra Practice-Vows chapter (T0293, the praise prose: a subtle, wondrous tongue surpassing that of the goddess of eloquence; each tongue an inexhaustible ocean of sounds; praising the ocean of all the Tathāgatas' merits; the praise verse, "with all the oceans of sound, putting forth inexhaustible wondrous words … I praise the ocean of the Buddha's profound merits")
  • Note: "to recite the Name is itself praise" (the Name as the gathered sum of the Buddha's merits) and "praise perfumes the heart" are the book's own linkages, not scriptural wording.

7.4 Making Offerings Extensively (vow 3; per NIAN-P26)

  • Sūtras: Samantabhadra Practice-Vows chapter (T0293, the offering prose: offering-articles each in measure like Mount Sumeru, lamp-wicks like Sumeru and lamp-oil like the sea, "of all offerings, the offering of Dharma is supreme," the seven kinds of dharma-offering, the "single thought of dharma-offering" comparison, "because the Tathāgatas honor the Dharma; because by practicing as taught the Buddhas are born"; the offering verse, "with a vast mind of surpassing understanding … I make offering to every Tathāgata")
  • Note: the seven kinds of dharma-offering are the sūtra's own list (not a commentarial schema); "buddha-recollection is itself a dharma-offering — at the two ends of practicing-as-taught and not-leaving-the-awakening-mind" is the book's own linkage. Lotus Sūtra (T0262) is a paper-source, not cited in the rewrite.

7.5 Repenting Karmic Obstructions (vow 4; per NIAN-P27 · Repenting Karmic Obstructions, Rejoicing in Merit · P27_repenting-karmic-obstructions-rejoicing-in-merit.md)

  • Sūtras: Samantabhadra Practice-Vows chapter (T0293, the repentance prose: "the bodhisattva reflects," "if these evil deeds had substance and form, the whole realm of space could not contain them," "before all the Buddhas and bodhisattvas … repent with a sincere heart, and will not do these deeds again"; the repentance verse, "whatever evil deeds I did of old, all sprang from beginningless greed, anger, and delusion"); Sūtra on the Contemplation of Amitāyus, the lowest birth of the lowest grade (T0365, "with a sincere heart, letting the sound not break off, completing ten recollections, calling Namo Amitābha Buddha … in thought after thought the evil of eighty koṭis of kalpas of birth-and-death is wiped away" — the linkage of buddha-recollection as repentance)
  • Note: the prose runs "greed, hatred, and delusion," the verse "greed, anger, and delusion" — the two readings stand apart on the page, anger being hatred, marked in the chapter; Golden Light Sūtra (T0663, reused from 5.5) is touched on in a single line. T0026 / T0277 / T1421 / T1564 etc. are paper-sources, not cited in the rewrite.

7.6 Rejoicing in Merit (vow 5; per NIAN-P27)

  • Sūtras: Samantabhadra Practice-Vows chapter (T0293, the rejoicing prose: rejoicing in all the roots of goodness of the Buddhas from their first arousing of the mind to nirvāṇa, "though it be a single dust-mote, I rejoice in it all," the merits of śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and bodhisattvas; the rejoicing verse, "all beings of the ten directions, the two vehicles, learners and adepts, all Tathāgatas and bodhisattvas — in all their merits I rejoice"); Lotus Sūtra, Merit-of-Rejoicing chapter (T0262, the fifty-fold transmission — reused from 5.2, paraphrased, not quoted verbatim)
  • Note: "rejoicing cures envy" and "rejoicing costs nothing, the broadest road for the aged" are the book's own linkages.

  • Sūtras: Samantabhadra Practice-Vows chapter (T0293, the requesting prose: in each land, moment by moment, Buddhas attaining perfect awakening, earnestly entreated to turn the wondrous dharma-wheel; the requesting verse, "all the lamps of the world in the ten directions, the first to accomplish awakening — I now entreat and invite them all"); Ekottarāgama, "Chapter on Entreaty," first sūtra (T0125, beneath the tree of awakening the thought of silence, Brahmā appearing, the lotus simile, the verse "Brahmā has come now to entreat" — the archetype of requesting the dharma-wheel)
  • Note: the archetype of entreating-to-teach lies in the T0125 Chapter on Entreaty (the first edition mis-cited Saṃyuktāgama fascicle 44, sūtra 1188 of Brahmā's entreaty — that discourse is in fact the Reverence sūtra, reassigned to 7.8); precise sūtra-number field left for Code Fable to tighten.

7.8 Requesting the Buddhas to Abide (vow 7; per NIAN-P28)

  • Sūtras: Samantabhadra Practice-Vows chapter (T0293, the requesting-to-abide prose: all Buddhas about to manifest parinirvāṇa, and all good teachers, entreated not to enter nirvāṇa; the abiding verse, "when the Buddhas wish to show nirvāṇa, I entreat them with utmost sincerity: abide for kalpas many as the dust of lands"); Saṃyuktāgama, the Reverence sūtra (T0099, "only the true Dharma, by which I awakened of myself and became a fully perfect Buddha … I shall honor and revere"; Brahmā's verse, "all of them revere the Dharma, dwelling in reliance on the true Dharma; such reverence as this is the Dharma of all Buddhas"); Larger Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra (T0360, when the way of the sūtras perishes, this sūtra is kept especially to abide a hundred years — the linkage of keeping a sūtra in the Dharma-ending age, paraphrased)
  • Note: "buddha-recollection is the ordinary person's requesting-the-Buddhas-to-abide" and "in the Dharma-ending age, one Buddha-name is kept" are the book's own linkages; the precise fascicle of the T0360 hundred-year passage left for Code Fable to supply.

7.9 Constantly Following the Buddha in Study (vow 8; per NIAN-P29 · Constantly Following the Buddha in Study, Accommodating Sentient Beings, Universal Dedication · P29_constantly-following-the-buddha-accommodating-sentient-beings-universal-dedication.md)

  • Sūtras: Samantabhadra Practice-Vows chapter (T0293, the following-in-study prose: the Tathāgata Vairocana of this Sahā world from His first arousing of the mind, "flaying His skin to make paper, splitting His bones to make pens, drawing His blood to make ink, copying out scriptures," not begrudging body or life for the Dharma's sake, awakening beneath the tree, "in every moment, I follow and learn"; the following verse, "I follow all Tathāgatas in study, cultivating the perfect practice of Samantabhadra … I vow to follow the three times in study, and swiftly accomplish great awakening")
  • Note: the line on Vairocana asserts no "dharma-body" judgment (Tiantai/Huayan doctrine differs), following the sūtra's plain wording "the Tathāgata Vairocana of this Sahā world"; XML reads "splitting His bones to make pens"; "learning the causal ground / buddha-recollection as the steadiest doorway into following-the-Buddha" is the book's own linkage.

7.10 Accommodating All Beings (vow 9; per NIAN-P29)

  • Sūtras: Samantabhadra Practice-Vows chapter (T0293, the accommodating prose: the manifold distinctions of beings, serving and providing for them "as one reveres father and mother, as one serves a teacher," "to the sick a good physician, to those astray the right road," "if a bodhisattva can accommodate beings, this is to make offering to all Buddhas," the great-tree-king simile "all beings are its roots, the Buddhas and bodhisattvas its flowers and fruits," "therefore awakening belongs to sentient beings"; the accommodating verse, "I shall ever accommodate all beings … perfecting unsurpassed great awakening")
  • Note: the term reads "accommodating" (恒順) in the XML; "buddha-recollection loosens self-grasping and grows great compassion, so that one can accommodate" is the book's own linkage.

7.11 Universal Dedication (vow 10; per NIAN-P29)

  • Sūtras: Samantabhadra Practice-Vows chapter (T0293, the dedication prose: all merits from the first prostration to the last accommodation dedicated to all beings, "I will take their heaviest fruits of suffering upon myself in their stead," the closing seal of the ten great vows complete and perfect; the vow-king's deathbed turning-home, "only this vow-king does not depart … in a single instant one attains rebirth in the World of Utmost Bliss and straightway sees Amitābha Buddha"; the dedication verse, "I vow that when my life approaches its end … I will see that Buddha, Amitābha, face to face," and the scroll's last line, "may all beings drowning in saṃsāra swiftly go to the land of the Buddha of Measureless Light")
  • Note: "dedication is the last step of losing the self" and "the dharma-realm buddha-recollection of the Flower Ornament clasps hands with the Pure Land" are the book's own linkages (the deathbed turning-home to Utmost Bliss is the explicit wording of T0293).
