Appendix A · Academic Notes Index
The main text was written to be spoken to you. So the catalog numbers, the fascicle references, the source locations—all of these have been ushered out of its pages and gathered here.
This index serves two purposes. First, it lets the reader who wants to look closer go from any chapter of the book back to the exact place in the sūtras, the Vinaya, and the treatises on which that chapter rests. Second, it gives a single overview of the principal texts cited across the book's thirty chapters. Nothing in this book is invented—every chapter's argument presses down on the original wording of the texts listed below. All Chinese-canon quotations have been collated against the CBETA Electronic Tripiṭaka (the Taishō canon and the Manji Zokuzōkyō); the Pāli canon is cited by Pali Text Society (PTS) numbering, and in the main text it is mostly rendered by sense rather than transcribed word for word.
Numbering conventions: T refers to the Taishō Shinshū Daizōkyō (volume and text number); X to the Manji Shinsan Zokuzōkyō; AN / SN / MN / DN to the Pāli Aṅguttara, Saṃyutta, Majjhima, and Dīgha Nikāyas; Vin to the Pāli Vinaya (PTS); Vism to the Visuddhimagga. Throughout this book the Visuddhimagga is cited by paraphrase only, never quoted directly, in keeping with the terms of its source license.
Two findings concerning attribution are also recorded here, and the whole book abides by them. First: T1804, the Sifenlü shanfan buque xingshichao (the Xingshichao), was written by Daoxuan of the Tang himself; T1805, the Sifenlü xingshichao zichiji (the Zichiji), was written by Yuanzhao of the Song—and within it, the set formulas of the "three-school judgment" and the "Perfect-Teaching seed" are Yuanzhao transmitting the text of Daoxuan's Karman-Commentary (the Yeshu; its full text survives in the combined edition X0728, the Jiyuanji). These formulas must never be credited as Daoxuan's own writing in the Xingshichao. Daoxuan's Hanzhu jieben shu (the Precept-Commentary) survives in full in the combined edition X0714, the Xingzongji. Second: T1811, the Pusa jie yishu (Commentary on the Meaning of the Bodhisattva Precepts), was spoken by Zhiyi of the Sui and recorded by Guanding; T1812, the Tiantai pusa jie shu, was abridged and supplemented by Mingkuang of the Tang—the two works must never be confused with each other.
