Upper Scroll · Prologue
A sūtra does not rush to begin with the answer. First, 「如是我聞」— “Thus have I heard” — settles what was heard. First, the Buddha, Jeta Grove, one thousand bhikṣus, and ten thousand bodhisattvas together bring the Dharma seat into being; the bodhisattvas adorn themselves with the great adornment and abide on the ground of non-retrogression. As the sky begins to brighten, Mañjuśrī arrives first at the Buddha’s place, and Śāriputra and the other great śrāvakas gather in succession. The Buddha waits until the assembly is complete before coming out and arranging his seat. Morning light first appears, and people too draw toward the Dharma seat: what the prologue safeguards is that hearing the Dharma never happens only within a single doctrinal statement. Its door opens when time, place, teacher, assembly, and the heart that comes near are all complete together. The Buddha asks why Śāriputra is standing outside the gate at dawn, and with that question pushes this door open into the next exchange.

Upper Scroll · Seeing the Tathāgata
Mañjuśrī arrives first at the Buddha’s place as day breaks. After Śāriputra explains who came before and who came after, the Buddha still asks: ‘You have come — is it because you wish to see the Tathāgata?’ The person is already standing before the Buddha, and only then does “seeing” truly become a question. Mañjuśrī says that he indeed wishes to see, and immediately contemplates the Tathāgata through such phrases as suchness without difference, unmoving and unmade, without arising and without ceasing, neither existent nor nonexistent. This right contemplation points toward benefiting sentient beings both at its opening and its close. The Buddha presses only one step further: the mind grasps nothing, yet it does not grasp at non-grasping. Śāriputra then brings this seeing back into action — seeing the Tathāgata for sentient beings, leading sentient beings toward nirvāṇa, and bringing forth the great adornment for sentient beings, yet without grasping the marks of sentient beings, nirvāṇa, or adornment. Mañjuśrī replies 「如是,如是」— “So it is, so it is”: even if immeasurable Buddhas taught the Dharma through long aeons and brought immeasurable sentient beings into nirvāṇa, the realm of sentient beings would still neither increase nor decrease, because no fixed mark of sentient beings can be found. To come before the Buddha without grasping the Tathāgata as a single mark; to benefit sentient beings without grasping them as fixed marks — the path of seeing opened by this chapter’s one question is precisely a seeing that does not depart from action and yet grasps nothing.

Upper Scroll · Realm of Sentient Beings
If the realm of sentient beings neither increases nor decreases, why do bodhisattvas still seek awakening and constantly teach the Dharma? The sūtra does not cancel bodhisattva practice, yet neither does it allow the practitioner, sentient beings, or the Dharma taught to become attainable things. The Buddha then asks about the mark, measure, location, and abiding of the realm of sentient beings. Mañjuśrī replies that its mark and measure are like the Buddha-realm, that its measure is inconceivable, and that sentient beings have no abiding, like the abiding of space. From here the Buddha turns the question toward practice: how does one abide in prajñā? Mañjuśrī answers that not abiding in any dharma is abiding, and that being without a mark of abiding is abiding. When the Buddha then asks how roots of goodness increase or decrease, Mañjuśrī says in succession that roots of goodness, all dharmas, and the nature and marks of prajñā neither increase nor decrease. He then releases, one by one, the taking and abandoning of ordinary and noble, saṃsāra and nirvāṇa, afflictive defilement and merit, arising and ceasing, increase and decrease, beauty and ugliness, high and low. That no dharma can be attained does not erase the constant teaching of Dharma; taking non-abiding as abiding does not fabricate another mark of non-abiding to guard. The chapter leaves practice whole while freeing practice from grasping. The doctrinal determination of this two-way boundary remains uncertain.

The Buddha asks whether the dharmas of all Buddhas are supreme. Mañjuśrī does not establish among dharmas a separate mark of superiority or sameness, yet he still says plainly that the Tathāgata personally awakens to the emptiness of all dharmas. When the Buddha asks whether “anuttara” is called the Buddha-Dharma, Mañjuśrī likewise does not cancel the name, but says that precisely because no dharma can be attained, it is called unsurpassed. From there onward, cultivating prajñā is not rejecting the Buddha-Dharma; it is not dividing the dharmas of ordinary beings, śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and Buddhas into fixed attainable marks, and it takes up neither abiding and non-abiding, conceivable and inconceivable, bondage and liberation, nor differences among the three vehicles. The Buddha vehicle has only a name; the unobstructed does not again attain the unobstructed; the seat of awakening is not a place where one sits alone. At the end, the sūtra presses the question into the most intimate place: the view of a self in the body and the rest are the reality-limit; its suchness-mark is neither real nor unreal, neither comes nor goes, and is both body and not body. Names may still be spoken, Dharma may still be cultivated, and the fruits of the path may still be accomplished, yet nowhere can a highest dharma be established as attainable, inhabitable, or discriminable. This is the essential meaning of anuttara raised through the chapter’s continuous questions and answers.

On hearing profound prajñā without alarm or fear, without sinking back or regret, Śāriputra says one is a bodhisattva-mahāsattva, Maitreya says one draws near the Buddha’s seat, Mañjuśrī says this is seeing the Buddha, and the upāsikā Without Marks points out that all dharmas are originally without marks. The Buddha brings this trust in hearing down to the ground of non-retrogression, the six perfections, disclosing the Dharma to others, and practicing as taught. Yet he then refuses to let the fruit become something graspable. Mañjuśrī says that he has not attained awakening and does not abide in the Buddha vehicle, and he sees neither a dharma of awakening, the cultivation of awakening, nor one who realizes it. When Śāriputra asks how to contemplate the Buddha, Mañjuśrī first asks how one speaks of “I.” “I” has only a name; Buddha likewise has only a name; the mark of the name is empty, and this itself is awakening. Hearing the Dharma without fear is not acquiring a title or position to guard. It is to hear, trust, and practice without turning bodhisattva, Buddha vehicle, awakening, or the name Buddha into attainable things. “Assurance” is the chapter’s reading title; it does not reduce the whole passage to a formal prediction.

Upper Scroll · The Profundity of Prajñā
Śāriputra says that the prajñā spoken by Mañjuśrī cannot be known by beginners. Mañjuśrī shifts the question from a person’s level to awakening itself: the nature and mark of awakening are empty and quiescent; there is no dharma that can be known, and no one who realizes or attains it. Śāriputra then asks: did the Buddha not realize awakening within the dharma-realm? Mañjuśrī answers that the World-Honored One is precisely the dharma-realm; to say that the dharma-realm then realizes the dharma-realm would become disputation. The dharma-realm is awakening, and the emptiness of all dharmas is awakening. Without duality there is no discrimination; without discrimination there is no fixed knower or speech. The sūtra next places its most difficult statements about heinous offenses, karmic conditions, grave transgression, and purity within the reality-limit and equality. It permits neither deleting the original sentences nor imposing a separate conclusion upon them. Further on, seeing no slightest dharma arise or cease is called non-retrogressive acceptance of dharmas; when all bonds are exhausted and nothing remains to be tamed, one is called a bhikṣu with nothing left to tame; even at the seat of awakening, there is no slightest dharma of awakening to be realized. The final passage says that awakening and the five heinous acts have no dual mark, and warns that the mind which grasps at realization is conceit-of-attainment. From being unknowable, to being impossible to split in two, to being impossible to seize as an attainment, this chapter does not erase practice. It refuses to let practitioner, realization, and attainment be grasped as substantial things.

The Buddha asks Mañjuśrī whether he recognizes Him as the Tathāgata. Mañjuśrī does not answer through a fixed form, but says that there is no mark of suchness that can be named “such,” that the Tathāgata and knowledge are nondual, and that emptiness as the Tathāgata likewise has only a name. From there, all Buddhas have a single inconceivable mark. If this Buddha abides in the world, Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges should likewise abide, because within the inconceivable there is no fixed division of past, future, and present. The Buddha then presses the question toward ordinary beings: the Tathāgata is inconceivable, and ordinary beings are likewise inconceivable. Yet Mañjuśrī does not use equality to cancel cultivation; he immediately says that only through long cultivating roots of goodness and drawing near good spiritual friends can one understand. Finally, supremacy, attainment of Dharma, teaching, and transformation are each raised and then each released from fixed marks of the one who attains, the one who speaks, and those transformed. The Tathāgata is still called the unsurpassed field of merit, yet is neither a field of merit nor not a field of merit. One must still cultivate goodness in accordance with the Dharma and deeply plant wholesome seeds, without grasping the result as something that increases or decreases. The upper scroll ends with the sixfold earthquake and the assembly’s attainments: cultivation is not abandoned, while the field of merit is not made substantial; names still function, while the inconceivable mark is not confined by them.

Ānanda asks why the great earth quakes, and the Buddha connects the auspicious sign back to the mark of the field of merit as being without difference. Śāriputra praises Mañjuśrī as inconceivable, but Mañjuśrī says that the natures of both the conceivable and the inconceivable cannot be spoken. The Buddha asks whether he has entered the inconceivable samādhi. Mañjuśrī sees no mind that can enter, yet he does not abolish cultivation: at first one binds the mind to a single object, and only after long practice does one become like an archer whose every released arrow hits, no longer producing a separate mental conception but remaining constantly together with concentration. Concentration cannot be attained, and every mark of mind is itself not mind; therefore the marks of sentient beings and the mark of samādhi are equal and without distinction. When the Buddha says that Mañjuśrī abides in prajñā, Mañjuśrī releases even this place of abiding. Abiding in being or in nonbeing remains a conception of self; one must leave both places and abide in non-abiding. Prajñā, the inconceivable, the dharma-realm, the signless, and no arising and no ceasing are thus identified layer by layer. At the end, the Buddha names such knowing non-retrogressive wisdom, and Mañjuśrī names it wisdom without fabrication, yet the simile of the gold ingot that must be hammered before its quality can be known reminds the practitioner: no mind does not mean never having practiced for a long time, and no fabrication does not mean never entering the sphere. Only by actually entering while neither recollecting nor becoming attached does wisdom become manifest.

The Buddha first asks: who can trust the wisdom proclaimed by the Tathāgatas themselves? Mañjuśrī describes right faith as not abiding in either extreme: not fixing this wisdom as a dharma of nirvāṇa or a dharma of saṃsāra, and not falling into cutting off or not cutting off, departing or not departing, cultivating or not cultivating. Kāśyapa immediately pushes the question into the future: who can trust and understand the profound right Dharma and accept and practice it according to what is heard? The Buddha’s answer points to the fourfold assembly listening in the Dharma assembly today. When they hear it again in the future, they will be able to trust and understand, recite, accept and uphold it, and teach it to others. A lost jewel is recovered, and so there is joy; a heavenly tree first puts forth buds, and so its coming bloom is known; a bead-stringer suddenly encounters a genuine jewel, and so recognizes it at sight; one has seen a city before, and so delights without weariness when hearing its gardens and pools described again. Together the four similes speak not of substituting a moment of joy for cultivation, but of the resonance when profound Dharma is encountered once more and of the continuity from hearing to circulation. Mañjuśrī then raises the absence of fabrication and marks in all dharmas and their supreme quiescence, and the Buddha repeatedly says that one should train in prajñā: seeking non-retrogression, seeking awakening, understanding the marks of dharmas, knowing the equality of all sentient beings’ realms of mind, covering sentient beings with loving-kindness without grasping a mark of sentient beings, and remaining without disputation without grasping a mark of non-disputation—all the way through the ten powers, fearlessnesses, and unobstructed eloquence—none is apart from this training. Hearing again is not the endpoint. Recognizing profound Dharma must still let trust and understanding become acceptance and upholding, and let acceptance and upholding become training without grasping.

Mañjuśrī contemplates the right Dharma as unconditioned and without marks. Attainment and non-attainment, realization and non-realization, and activity and non-activity cannot be fixed on either side; even prajñā and the realm of prajñā cannot be separately established as what is grasped. Precisely for this reason, he asks: since the marks of dharmas are like this, how, ultimately, does one learn prajñā? The Buddha does not fabricate another dharma, but says only that knowing the marks of all dharmas in this way is learning prajñā. If one wishes to learn the samādhi of mastery in awakening, one must likewise learn within this prajñā; what follows from attaining it is the ability to illuminate the profound Buddha-Dharmas, know the names of all Buddhas, and comprehend their worlds without obstruction. Though prajñā has a name, it has no border or limit and neither name nor mark; like the dharma-realm, it has no boundary. Though it is called a sphere of practice, the absence of thought and activity loosens grasping at that sphere. At the end Mañjuśrī still asks 「當云何行」— “How should one practice?” — sending the reader into the next passage: non-attainment has not canceled practice, but first prevents practice from becoming a dharma, realm, or result that can be grasped.

Mañjuśrī asks: what is called the single-practice samādhi? The Buddha answers: the dharma-realm has a single mark; bind the attention to the dharma-realm. This does not tell a person to guard an invisible “dharma-realm” in blankness. The sūtra immediately makes the path concrete: first hear prajñā, cultivate as taught, dwell in a secluded place, relinquish distracted thought, grasp no physical mark, bind the mind to one Buddha, and exclusively invoke that Buddha’s name so that one recollection follows another without interruption. Although recollection is bound to one Buddha, what is seen extends through the Buddhas of the three times, because the Buddhas’ merit is nondual and all ride upon the one suchness to accomplish perfect awakening. Nor is cultivation a leap to the summit in one step: constant recollection, diligent effort, and freedom from negligence lead through gradual training, like a maṇi jewel polished until light shines through surface and interior. What is attained is also like the disk of the sun, whose light pervades everywhere without decrease. At the end of the chapter, the sūtra releases “attainment” once more: one swiftly attains awakening, yet within awakening there is no Buddha attained; it is attained neither through a cause nor through a non-cause. Cultivation is distinct, without making the attainment substantial; recollection is single, without separating one from all Buddhas. This is the essential single practice raised by the chapter’s own words.

Mañjuśrī asks where in Jambudvīpa the prajñā should be expounded, but the Buddha first points to the people able to hear, vow, and bear it: they vow to accord with prajñā again in future lives and rejoice after hearing it. Mañjuśrī then teaches the Dharma without establishing it as contention, while the listener does not grasp hearing and attainment as two marks. The Buddha, however, brings non-grasping back to an unbroken series of instructions that one “should train,” until even a single four-line verse is to be retained, recited, explained to others, and followed in accord with the true mark. To hear without being startled or afraid and to give rise to trust and understanding is to be confirmed by the Buddha through the Great Vehicle Dharma-seal. After Śakra makes offerings of flowers, incense, jewels, and music, he vows that sentient beings will always hear, trust and understand, retain, recite, and expound the teaching, while the heavenly beings offer their protection. From the question “Where should it be taught?” to the vow “May everyone always hear it,” this chapter grounds the circulation of prajñā in hearing without attachment, speaking without contention, and retaining so as to transmit.

The Buddha first confirms to Śakra Devānām Indra that good men and good women who retain the prajñā will certainly attain the awakening of the Buddhas. Mañjuśrī then says that retaining it in this way brings great benefit and immeasurable merit. The earth therefore shakes in six ways; the Buddha smiles and releases a radiance that illuminates the entire trichiliocosm. The meaning of this auspicious sign is not left for later readers to guess: Mañjuśrī says directly that it is the sign by which the Tathāgata seals the prajñā-pāramitā, and the Buddha also says that the sign appears precisely to seal the prajñā and cause people to retain it. What is sealed is the “signless Dharma-seal,” which can neither be praised nor disparaged and which prevents the heavenly māras from finding an opportunity. The sūtra does not end by making the radiance its final point, but closes with the assembly hearing the Dharma and “rejoicing and respectfully putting it into practice.” The Buddha completes the seal through the auspicious sign, and the hearers receive it through practice; the Dharma-seal is not merely seen but abides through retention.
