Everyone has heard that the right view in Buddhism is "the middle way." But — the middle of what, exactly?

The Madhyāntavibhāga is a treatise written for precisely this question. Its title means "Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes." Maitreya composed the verses and Vasubandhu the commentary, and the first chapter, "Characteristics," sets the answer in place from the very start.

It says: there are two "extremes." One is reification — asserting that what is not there is there. The other is denial — asserting that what is there is not there. And the middle is not splitting the difference "between" them; it is seeing as it is: granting the existence of what does exist, and seeing through the non-existence of what does not.

So what, exactly, is the "what does not" and the "what does"? This chapter fixes the eye of the whole treatise in a single verse: that restless activity of mind in us — forever discriminating, forever cutting the world into "me" and "object" — exists; but the pair it cuts out, "grasper and grasped," is absent; and the emptiness free of that pair, once again, exists. Following this thread, the chapter gathers all things into the "three natures," and then leads from "seeing clearly what things are like" all the way to "directly realizing that the two-grasping is, of itself, empty."

In other words, this chapter offers not a slogan but a map — from "what the middle is" all the way to "how to realize it for oneself."

If this question has ever held you, the exposition layer will walk you down this thread one stretch at a time; to go deeper, there are the verses themselves, Vasubandhu's commentary, and the ancient masters' findings. But you need not leap in at once — for now, just here, let the one question settle in you: the middle of what, exactly?

The first chapter made clear how things really are. But an honest question follows at once: if reality is so, why can we not see it — or realize it?

The second chapter of the Madhyāntavibhāga, "Obscurations," is written for exactly this question. An "obscuration" (āvaraṇa) is what veils — and it does two things: it covers the reality that ought to be known, so that wisdom cannot arise; and it bars the way to true nirvāṇa, so that one cannot realize it. Before you can practice, you have to see clearly: what, exactly, is standing in the way?

What this chapter offers is a catalogue of the veils — and an extraordinarily orderly one. First it gathers every obscuration into five great kinds (noting which kind obstructs the bodhisattva and which the two vehicles); then it unfolds them layer by layer — how the afflictions bind a person (the nine fetters), what conditions the growth of the good lacks and where its practice goes crooked (the thirty causal obscurations), and, on through the thirty-seven limbs of awakening, the six perfections, and the ten stages, what subtlest veils still remain. From the coarse to the fine, ever more closely analyzed.

Yet in the end it does not leave you lost among the names. When the seventeen verses run their course, it gathers them all in one stroke: no obscuration falls outside two — the afflictive obscuration (which bars liberation) and the cognitive obscuration (which bars omniscience). "When these two are exhausted, one is liberated from all obscuration" — the two vehicles sever the one and gain liberation; the bodhisattva severs both and realizes great awakening.

In other words, this chapter gives you a map of what is to be severed: it points out, one by one, the things standing between you and reality, so that the next chapter's "antidotes" have a definite object to work upon.

If you want to know what each of these veils is, and how they pair up layer by layer, the exposition layer will walk you through them section by section; to go deeper still, there are the verses themselves, Vasubandhu's commentary, and the ancient masters' philology. But you need not leap in at once — for now, just hold the question close: what is it that stands between me and the real?

Students of the Dharma are forever speaking of "seeing reality as it is," of "meeting the real." But — what, exactly, counts as real? Is it some single, hard-to-pin-down "truth," or is it something articulate, something one can actually lay out point by point?

The third chapter of the Madhyāntavibhāga, "Discerning Reality," answers this question head-on. It does not hand you a vague "the truth"; it unfolds the real into ten realities — ten angles from which "what is real" is said fully and said precisely.

The ten look like a crowd, but a single thread runs through them: all of them rest on the "three natures," and are opened out from them. The three natures are the three faces of all things — the wholly-imagined (superimposed and never there), the other-dependent (arising on conditions, seeming real yet not), and the perfectly-accomplished (suchness, revealed by the two emptinesses). The eye of this chapter is one image: with the three natures as a mirror, the remaining nine realities are shown as its reflections. Characteristic, freedom-from-error, the four truths, the two truths, the five matters, the seven realities, the tenfold skill — layer upon layer, none of them stands apart from the three natures.

And what is all this discernment for? The chapter states it plainly: "all for removing the view-of-self" — ten realities counter ten views-of-self, the tenfold skill breaks ten graspings-at-self. Reality here is not for metaphysical talk; it is a contemplation for undoing the grip of self.

In other words, this chapter offers not a label reading "the truth," but a mirror that shows the false and reveals the real — and, upon that very mirror-and-reflection, a set of contemplative gates that break the grasping at self, layer by layer.

If you too have ever pressed the question "what, in the end, counts as real," the exposition layer will walk you through these ten realities one stretch at a time; to go deeper, there are the verses themselves, Vasubandhu's commentary, and the ancient masters' findings. But you need not leap in at once — for now, just here, let one image settle in you: the three natures as mirror, the realities as its reflections.

The doctrine has been made clear — and then what? You have seen what things are like (Characteristics), recognized the afflictions that veil them (Obscuration), and established the reality to be cultivated (Reality); but knowing is not yet doing. This chapter is that step — the turn from "seeing clearly" to "taking up the practice."

Everything the Buddhist path cultivates is gathered here into a single list: the thirty-seven factors of awakening (bodhipākṣika). From the four foundations of mindfulness and the four right exertions, to the bases of power, the five faculties and powers, the seven factors of awakening, and the eightfold path — this is no heap of maxims but a road with a sequence: first "know" the obstacle and its antidote, then "do" — diligently sever and cultivate — then cultivate concentration, enter the path of preparation, manifest on the path of seeing, function on the path of cultivation. Each class answers exactly to one of the obstacles listed earlier in "Obscuration" — one side names the illness, the other the medicine.

But the decisive question is this: the two vehicles cultivate these same thirty-seven factors, and so does the bodhisattva — where, then, lies the difference? The chapter's closing verse gives an answer that rests the whole Great Vehicle on a single idea — non-apprehension (anupalambha). Contemplating the same body, feeling, mind, and phenomena, the two vehicles contemplate "impermanence," the bodhisattva contemplates "non-apprehension"; cultivating not for one's own swift release from suffering, but to realize the non-abiding nirvāṇa. The factors are still the same factors — but with the eye that enters them changed, the great vehicle and the lesser part ways.

In other words, this chapter offers not a catalogue of techniques but a map — from "how to take the very first step" all the way to "what makes the Great Vehicle uncommon."

If you want to know how each of the thirty-seven factors is cultivated, how the eight abandonments counter the five faults, how the factors of awakening and the path-factors belong to the paths of seeing and of cultivation, the exposition layer will walk you through it one stretch at a time; to go deeper, there are the verses themselves, Vasubandhu's commentary, and the ancient masters' findings. For now, just here, let one question settle in you: the path you cultivate — is it for your own release from suffering, or to benefit all beings, holding nothing as attained?

Does practice have "progress"? From the ordinary being to buddhahood, what stages does the road pass through? The previous chapter said what is cultivated; this chapter answers exactly this.

It first opens the whole course of practice into eighteen stages: from the causal ground of one who abides in the lineage, through aspiration and preparation, to the noble stages of learner and beyond-learner, to the bodhisattva's ten grounds, all the way to the buddha's dharma body, enjoyment body, and transformation body. One line threads the entire road from ordinary being to buddha. Then it gathers these eighteen into three — impure, pure-and-impure, pure — and makes plain that these three are not three things but one and the same suchness, showing three faces as it is bound by the afflictions, gradually freed, and at last unbound. However many the stages, they are only the defilement-and-purity phases of one suchness.

But the deepest move of this chapter is its closing verse. It asks: what, then, is a "practitioner"? The answer is unexpected — there is no real "self" climbing this ladder. When we say "one who abides in the lineage" or "one who has aspired," these are entirely names posited according to "stage"; the stages differ, so the names differ, but that "person" is never to be found. A chapter on stages closes, of all places, on "no-self."

In other words, this chapter draws the ladder of realization in fine detail with one hand, and with the other tells you, here and now: the one who climbs was never a "self" at all.

If you want to know what each of the eighteen stages refers to, how the three stages divide by the purity of the dharma-realm, and how "the person is posited upon dharmas" joins with the no-self of Yogācāra, the exposition layer will walk you through it section by section; to go deeper, there are the verses themselves, Vasubandhu's commentary, and the ancient masters' findings. For now, just here, let one question settle in you: that "self who makes progress," which you carry with you along the path — is it really there at all?

Having cultivated such a road — the thirty-seven factors, the eighteen stages — what, in the end, does one gain? This chapter answers precisely that. The foregoing chapters spoke of the "cause"; this one speaks of the "fruit."

It speaks first through the five fruits of common Abhidharma teaching: cultivation yields the body that upholds the noble path (the maturation fruit), the dominant force that makes wholesome factors of the highest grade (the dominant fruit), the deep delight in the wholesome that comes of cultivating it in former lives (the outflow fruit), the swift completion of wholesome roots through present diligence (the fruit of effort), and finally the disjunction fruit — obstacle-severance, permanent freedom from bondage. The first four are common to the tainted and the untainted; only this last, "disjunction," is unconditioned in substance and gained by the untainted alone — the fruit of the path becomes the truly supramundane attainment only at this step of "obstacle-severance."

Then it briefly opens ten fruits, laying out the whole course of the bodhisattva's attainment in a single line: from the "first fruit" of the path of seeing, through learner and beyond-learner, all the way to the bodhisattva grounds' "fruit having a beyond" and the buddha-ground's "unsurpassed fruit." The chapter's culmination falls right here — "the unsurpassed fruit = the buddha-ground." The fruit having reached the buddha-ground, the next chapter, "The Unsurpassed Vehicle," follows of its own accord to ask: why is this path the unsurpassed Great Vehicle?

In other words, this chapter does not merely tally the harvest of practice; it carries that harvest all the way to its summit — pointing straight to the buddha-ground — and lays the thread for the treatise's final chapter.

If you want to know what each of the five fruits refers to, why the "disjunction fruit" alone is unconditioned, and how the ten fruits lay out the whole course from the path of seeing to the buddha-ground, the exposition layer will walk you through it section by section; to go deeper, there are the verses themselves, Vasubandhu's commentary, and the ancient masters' findings. For now, just here, let one question settle in you: the "fruit" you hope practice will bring — is it a passing ease, or that true, irreversible attainment of obstacle severed and bondage left behind?

The Great Vehicle calls itself "unsurpassed" — with nothing standing higher than it. Is that a term of reverence only, or is there a reason that can be spelled out?

The last chapter of the Madhyāntavibhāga, "The Unsurpassed Vehicle," is where the reason is spelled out. Maitreya composed the verses and Vasubandhu the commentary; the first six chapters treated, in turn, the characteristics of things, the obscurations that veil them, reality, the antidotes, the stages, and the fruit. Arriving at this last chapter, the author does one summarizing thing: he shows why this whole road of the Great Vehicle earns the word "unsurpassed."

The answer is the three unsurpasseds: the practice cultivated is unsurpassed, the object contemplated is unsurpassed, and the cultivation-and-realization passed through is unsurpassed — practice, object, fruit, all three unsurpassed, and only so is this vehicle unsurpassed. The first thread, "practice," is the broadest, and opens into six kinds; and the deepest stretch among them is the Yogācāra contemplation itself — the two-grasping is, of itself, absent; the deluded consciousness merely appears; all is like an illusion; the dharma-realm is originally pure — sealed by a single "illusionist simile": by consciousness-only one casts off the outer object, and by the object's absence one casts off consciousness-only in turn, until object and consciousness are both effaced. This is where the "middle" that gives the treatise its name — Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes — shows most plainly of all.

And so, in its final verse, the treatise turns back to name itself: what it "distinguishes" is false imagining's being-in-the-middle from the two-grasping's two extremes — the middle way free of both. What the first chapter set up and this last verse say answer each other end to end: the whole treatise, it turns out, has spoken of one middle way from beginning to end.

If the question "what makes the Great Vehicle unsurpassed?" has ever crossed your mind, the exposition layer will walk you down this thread — the three unsurpasseds, the six kinds of practice, the object, the cultivation-realization — one stretch at a time, all the way to the treatise's final verse. To go deeper, there are the verses themselves, Vasubandhu's commentary, and the ancient masters' findings. But you need not leap in at once — for now, just here, let the one question settle in you: unsurpassed — by what right, exactly?
