Part Three · The Ten Practices · Out the Door, to Work

The house is established; the office received. The second stretch of the three worthy ranks—the Ten Practices—is the stretch of going out.

The abode-stage put its weight on "I": is the standing solid, has the view taken its stand. The Ten Practices swing the lens toward beings: the content of the practice is the six perfections, its object is others, its field is the world. The six names everyone can recite—giving, discipline, patience, energy, meditation, wisdom—cease in this stretch to be a list and become deeds in the doing; and the arrow of every one of them points, in so many words, at the benefit of others.

Part Three is a single chapter, with three things to do: see the names of the Ten Practices and the turn toward others; see how the six perfections pass from names on a menu to dishes on the table; and see why the five perfections without prajñā are like the blind on the road, and only with prajñā leading earn the words "to the far shore."

Open the door, and go out.
