Chapter 2 · Nanyue and Tiantai — How the School Was Founded
第二章 · 南嶽與天台——慧思·智顗立宗
Part One · Sources and Formation
The preceding chapter ended with an established text: 「What the age honored and followed was in every case the Qin text.」 Yet an established sutra is still only one case in a scripture library. Who read it into a road and a school? The answer is two people and one meeting between them. The Taishō canon preserves a first-hand document for each: Huisi's own Vow Text and Zhiyi's Separate Biography, composed by his disciple Guanding. This chapter lets the documents speak. Your task is simply to watch how master and disciple read a sutra into their lives.
1 · Huisi — The Man Who Made Vows
Who was Huisi? At the opening of the Vow Text of the Great Meditation Master Huisi of Nanyue, he tells us himself. The source punctuation consists only of 「full stops」 and is reproduced as recorded:
「I, Huisi, was born in the eighty-second year of the Final Dharma, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the year Yiwei, in Wujin County, Runan Commandery, Southern Yuzhou, in the Great Wei realm. At the age of fifteen I left home to cultivate the Way, reciting the Lotus Sutra and other Great Vehicle scriptures.」 〔《南嶽思大禪師立誓願文》·T46n1933 0787a04–07·待譯〕 『In today's words: I, Huisi, was born in the eighty-second year of the Final Dharma, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the year Yiwei, in Wujin County, Runan Commandery, Southern Yuzhou, in the Great Wei realm. At the age of fifteen I left home to cultivate the Way, reciting the Lotus Sutra and other Great Vehicle scriptures.』
His first sentence places his life within the cycle of 「the Final Dharma.」 Others recorded a birth by an emperor's reign title; he counted down the decline of the Buddha's Dharma. He practiced with the awareness that the age was growing dark. At fifteen he left home, and the text he recited was the Lotus. Later, while teaching in Guangzhou, he was harried by hostile doctrinal masters. His answer was not debate but a vow to produce scriptures:
「I vow to make a copy of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā and other Great Vehicle scriptures in gold characters and reverently place the scrolls in a jeweled lapis-lazuli case.」 〔同文·0787b23–24〕 『In today's words: I vow to make a copy of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā and other Great Vehicle scriptures in gold characters and reverently place the scrolls in a jeweled lapis-lazuli case.』
Writing scriptures in gold and housing them in a lapis-lazuli case: he sought to make the Dharma more enduring than warfare. This is Huisi's ground: awareness of the Final Dharma, recitation of the Lotus, and vows made into practice. Such a man taught on Mount Dasu in Guangzhou and waited for his student.
2 · Mount Dasu — A Meeting
At the opening of the Separate Biography, we read of Zhiyi: 「The Great Master's personal name was Zhiyi, his style name De'an, and his lay surname Chen. He was a native of Yingchuan.」 〔隋灌頂撰《隋天台智者大師別傳》·T50n2050 0191a24·待譯〕. He left home at eighteen. Later, hearing that Huisi was on Mount Dasu in Guangzhou, he crossed dangerous country to seek him out. At their first meeting, Huisi said:
「When he first obtained an audience and bowed with his crown to the ground, Huisi said: In former days on Vulture Peak, we heard the Lotus together. Drawn onward by former conditions, you have now come again. He immediately showed him the practice place of Universally Worthy and taught him the Four Practices of Ease.」 〔同傳·0191c21–23〕 『In today's words: When Zhiyi first obtained an audience and bowed with his crown to the ground, Huisi said: In former days on Vulture Peak, we heard the Lotus together. Drawn onward by former conditions, you have now come again. He immediately showed him the practice place of Universally Worthy and taught him the Four Practices of Ease.』
「In former days on Vulture Peak, we heard the Lotus together.」 This was not courtesy but Huisi's placement of their relation as master and disciple: their conditions began in the assembly where the Buddha taught the Lotus. The gift at their meeting was a place of practice, that of Universally Worthy, and a Dharma-gate, the Four Practices of Ease—the chapter read in Chapter 10 of this book, where Huisi's dedicated explanation is also cited. From the beginning their relationship followed a rule: it did not start with pleasantries but with the work of practice.
3 · Sudden Opening beneath the “Medicine King” Chapter
Zhiyi practiced according to the teaching:
「After two periods of seven days, while reciting the ‘Medicine King’ chapter he reached the words, ‘The buddhas all praise this as true diligence; this is called true Dharma-offering.’ At this one sentence his body and mind opened suddenly; he became still and entered concentration.」 〔同傳·0191c26–28〕 『In today's words: After fourteen days of practice, while reciting the “Medicine King” chapter he reached the sentence 「The buddhas all praise this as true diligence; this is called true Dharma-offering.」 His body and mind opened suddenly, and in stillness he entered concentration.』
While reciting the “Medicine King” chapter, he reached the sentence 「This is true diligence; this is called true Dharma-offering.」 The wording is reproduced from the Separate Biography itself; the complete “Medicine King” chapter is in Chapter 23 of this edition's annotated Lotus. Body and mind opened suddenly. Reading had reached the point where the sutra opened the reader, and teaching and contemplation joined at that moment. Huisi's confirmation gave this awakening its place:
「Master Huisi exclaimed in praise: Were it not you, none could realize this; were it not I, none could recognize it. The concentration you entered is the preliminary skillful means of the Lotus Samādhi. The retention that arose is the initial turning dhāraṇī. Even if there were a thousand hosts and ten thousand multitudes of teachers of the written word, they could not exhaust your eloquence. Among those who teach the Dharma, you are foremost.」 〔同傳·0192a05–08〕 『In today's words: Master Huisi exclaimed in praise: Were it not you, none could realize this; were it not I, none could recognize it. The concentration you entered is the preliminary skillful means of the Lotus Samādhi. The retention that arose is the initial turning dhāraṇī. Even if there were thousands upon thousands of teachers of the written word, they could not exhaust your eloquence. Among those who teach the Dharma, you are foremost.』
「Were it not you, none could realize this; were it not I, none could recognize it.」 One sentence exhausts the path between master and disciple. The student must realize it; the teacher must have the eye to recognize it. Without either, the awakening has no place to land.
4 · Teaching in His Place and Receiving the Entrustment
When Huisi completed his gold-character copy of the Great Prajñāpāramitā, he began teaching its profound meaning and ordered Zhiyi to teach in his place. After listening, he 「praised him, saying: The Dharma has indeed been entrusted to a minister of the Dharma; the Dharma-king has nothing left to do」 〔0192a22–27 帶〕. Before they parted, Huisi left this entrustment:
「Master Huisi admonished him: I have long yearned for the southern peak of Heng, regretting only that the Dharma had no one to whom it could be entrusted. You have roughly gained entrance to its gate, fully satisfying my wish. My understanding is not inferior to yours, but our conditions now require us to part. I now entrust it to you. You should uphold this Dharma, respond to conditions, transmit the lamp, and transform beings. Do not become the last person, the one who cuts off the seed.」 〔同傳·0192a29–0192b04〕 『In today's words: Master Huisi admonished him: I have long yearned for the southern peak of Heng, regretting only that the Dharma had no one to whom it could be entrusted. You have roughly gained entrance to its gate, fully satisfying my wish. My understanding is not inferior to yours, but our conditions now require us to part. I now entrust it to you. You should uphold this Dharma, respond to conditions, transmit the lamp, and transform beings. Do not become the last person, the one who cuts off the seed.』
「Do not become the last person, the one who cuts off the seed.」 The Dharma has been placed in your hands; do not let it end there. This is not encouragement but a charge made as one entrusts an orphan. Huisi went south to Mount Heng, while Zhiyi traveled east to Jinling. Through one entrustment, a school that did not yet have a name was placed in the next generation's hands.
5 · Tiantai and Yuquan
Zhiyi later resolved to leave the clamor. Saying that 「Mount Jiang is too near and no place to avoid the noise」 〔0193a07〕, he chose a mountain dwelling:
「In the ninth month of autumn in the seventh year of Taijian under the Chen, he first entered Mount Tiantai.」 〔同傳·0193a11–12〕 『In today's words: In the ninth month of autumn in the seventh year of Taijian under the Chen, he first entered Mount Tiantai.』
Mount Tiantai thereafter became the school's name. Later generations called it the Tiantai school, naming a body of learning after a mountain. Later, in response to an invitation, Zhiyi went to Jingzhou and 「established a monastery on Mount Yuquan in Dangyang County. By imperial decree it was first granted the plaque ‘Single Sound’ and later renamed ‘Yuquan’」 〔0195a26–27〕. This was the Yuquan Monastery of the 「whole summer」 in Chapter 0. The chronology in the Guoqing bailu also records the teaching of the Mohe Zhiguan there 〔T46n1934 0823b28–29·待譯〕. As for the title 「Zhizhe,」 the Separate Biography records its exchange when the Prince of Jin received the precepts:
「The master said: Your Highness has condescended to observe the sacred prohibitions; your name shall be Zongchi, ‘Total Retention.’ The prince said: The Great Master transmits the lamp of the Buddha's Dharma and shall be styled Zhizhe, ‘Wise One.’」 〔同傳·0195a18–19〕 『In today's words: Zhiyi said: Your Highness has condescended to observe the sacred precepts; your name shall be Zongchi, “Total Retention.” The Prince of Jin said: The Great Master transmits the lamp of the Buddha's Dharma and shall be styled Zhizhe, “Wise One.”』
In the first half, Zhiyi gives the prince a name, Zongchi. In the second, the prince gives the master a title, Zhizhe. The names were exchanged.
6 · A School Founded between Master and Disciple
Who read a sutra into a school? The documents in this chapter answer: not one person. Huisi made the Lotus into samādhi, peaceful practice, and vow. At his seat, Zhiyi opened suddenly; he received the entrustment 「Do not become the last person, the one who cuts off the seed」 and taught it into Tiantai's inheritance. No one declared that the school had been founded. It came into being between a meeting, an awakening, and an entrustment. Later generations summarized that awakening with four characters, 『the wondrous awakening at Mount Dasu.』 Those four are a later expression; the wording of the Separate Biography appears above. How did the teachings Zhiyi gave through a whole summer become books and reach later generations? That is the brush of Guanding in the next chapter.
