Bibliography
This bibliography lists the base text on which this edition actually rests, the three alternate translations, and the three mirrors of carrying forward; and it keeps apart, as fact requires, the two classes 「已對校之書」—“works this edition has itself collated” and 「注家所引而本版未取其本對校之書」—“works the commentators cite, whose own texts this edition has not taken up for collation.” For scriptures and treatises cited here and there within a single unit, the canon numbers and page anchors listed under Topics III and VIII of that unit’s Apparatus remain authoritative. This edition holds scripture and the ancient masters to be the bounds of authority, and lists no modern research as a ground of doctrine.
I. The Base Text and the Alternate Translations (one sūtra, four translations)
| Title | Translator · dynasty | Canon number | Fascicles | Standing in this edition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
The Sūtra of the Original Vows and Merits of the Medicine Buddha, Beryl Radiance Tathāgata | Xuanzang · Great Tang | T14n0450 | one | Base text; the Source-Text layer and the stable anchor system of the whole edition, running from the title at the head of the fascicle to the title at its close |
The Sūtra of the Original Vows of the Medicine Tathāgata | Dharmagupta · Sui | T14n0449 | one | Collation witness; at the head of the fascicle there stands besides a translator’s preface recording the sequence of the translations |
The Sūtra of the Original Vows and Merits of the Seven Buddhas of Beryl Radiance | Yijing · Tang | T14n0451 | two | Collation witness · the Seven-Buddha expanded recension; the Medicine Buddha stands seventh, and his vow-text falls at the end of the first fascicle. Wherever it is taken for comparison, it is the Medicine Buddha’s own vow-section that is taken, never the vows of the six preceding buddhas |
| 佛說灌頂經, fascicle 12, 〈拔除過罪生死得度經〉 The Sūtra of the Uprooting of Past Sins and Deliverance from Birth and Death | Śrīmitra · Eastern Jin | T21n1331 | twelve fascicles in all · this edition takes fascicle 12 | Collation witness · the earliest layer; in the ordering and grouping of the vows it agrees with the three later translations in some places and differs in others |
The four translations are collated only within the passages each actually contains. Differences in the ordering and grouping of the vows, in fullness and brevity, and in the rendering of names are set side by side as they stand: nothing from another translation is silently supplied into the base text, and no wording of the base text is laid over an alternate translation.
Self-attestation of the sequence of the translations (twofold · both drawn from this sūtra and its commentary, not from modern textual criticism): the preface to the Sui recension records of itself that an older Song-era translation preceded it — 「昔宋孝武之世,鹿野寺沙門慧簡已曾譯出在世流行,但以梵宋不融、文辭雜糅,致令轉讀之輩多生疑惑」—“Of old, in the time of Emperor Xiaowu of the Song, the śramaṇa Huijian of Luye Monastery had already brought out a translation which circulated in the world; but because the Sanskrit and the Chinese were not fused and the diction was mixed and confused, those who recited it were led into much doubt” 〔T14n0449 0401a11〕 — and it sets down its own version as settled: 「此本最定,諸讀誦者願莫更疑,得罪不輕」—“This version is the most settled; may those who read and recite it doubt no further, for the fault incurred is not light” 〔T14n0449 0401a28〕. The line-by-line mirror, for its part, matches the three titles to the three translations: 「此中宋孝武世大明元年譯出之本,取第三名拔除過罪生死得度」—“Among these, the version brought out in the first year of the Daming era in the time of Emperor Xiaowu of the Song takes the third title, the uprooting of past sins and deliverance from birth and death.” 〔T38n1770 0257a10〕, 「隋大業十一年東都洛水南上林薗翻經館譯,略取初名藥師如來本願經」—“The translation made in the eleventh year of the Daye era of the Sui, at the Sūtra-Translation Hall of the Shanglin Park south of the Luo waters in the Eastern Capital, takes the first title in brief, the Sūtra of the Original Vows of the Medicine Tathāgata.” 〔T38n1770 0257a12〕, 「今大唐貞觀年中玄奘三藏所譯之本,具取初名題一部也」—“The version translated by Tripiṭaka Master Xuanzang in the Zhenguan years of the present Great Tang takes the first title in full as the title of the whole work.” 〔T38n1770 0257a13〕; and it judges their fullness and brevity thus: 「文義廣略,後二相似」—“In the breadth and brevity of letter and sense, the latter two are alike.” 〔T38n1770 0257a15〕. Both witnesses point to a Song-era translation, and neither says when it was incorporated into the twelve fascicles of the Consecration Sūtra — that matter is recorded without adjudication.
II. The Three Mirrors of Carrying Forward
The three do not gloss the same translation. Whenever an outline or a gloss of theirs is cited, the recension it glosses is named first; a commentary on another translation is never made to serve directly as an explanation of the base text. Which recension each glosses is settled by mechanical collation, not by report.
| Author | Title | Canon number | Fascicles | Recension glossed | Standing in this edition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taehyŏn, śramaṇa of Ch’ŏnggu | 本願藥師經古迹, Ancient Traces on the Sūtra of the Original Vows of the Medicine Buddha | T38n1770 | two | Xuanzang’s recension (the base text itself) | Line-by-line mirror — the only work now surviving that takes the base text as its base and glosses it phrase by phrase; the principal anchor for the doctrinal outline, the technical terms, and the adjudication of doctrine |
Commentary on the Medicine Buddha Sūtra | T85n2766 | a Dunhuang manuscript, a fragmentary scroll with its opening lost | The Consecration recension | Cited per locus; what survives ends with the gloss on the twelve vows |
Commentary on the Medicine Buddha Sūtra | T85n2767 | a Dunhuang manuscript | Dharmagupta’s Sui recension | Cited per locus; its surviving portion begins at the close of that recension’s passage on the buddha-land and ends not far beyond the passage of circulation |
- At the head of its fascicle Ancient Traces gives its own attribution, 「青丘沙門太賢撰」—“composed by Taehyŏn, śramaṇa of Ch’ŏnggu” 〔T38n1770 0257a05〕. The books it cites run throughout along the Dharma-characteristics line.
- Both Dunhuang commentaries are anonymous and neither records a date of composition; their period is not adjudicated, and only the recension each glosses and the books each cites are recorded as found. T85n2766 cites the Vibhāṣā, the Four-Part Abhidharma, the Saṃyukta-abhidharma-hṛdaya, the Tattvasiddhi, the Bodhisattvabhūmi, and the Daśabhūmika treatise; T85n2767 cites the Cheng weishi lun and the Treatise on the Buddha-Bhūmi.
- Both are manuscripts, in which corrupt and missing graphs occur. Every citation reproduces the manuscript graph as it stands: nothing is emended and nothing is supplied.
- In three places Ancient Traces cites the words of one 「邁師」—“Master Mai” by way of gloss: 「邁師云」—“Master Mai says” 〔T38n1770 0260a14〕 (glossing the months and the year of the eight-precept fast), 〔T38n1770 0260a27〕 (glossing birth by transformation), and 〔T38n1770 0262a13〕 (glossing the form of the seven lamps). Of his name and where he lived Ancient Traces says nothing, and this edition records without adjudicating, setting him down only as an authority whose words the line-by-line mirror cites.
III. Works Cited in the Canon’s Collation Notes
| Title | Canon number | Standing in this edition |
|---|---|---|
Direct Explanation of the Medicine Buddha Sūtra | X21n0381 | Not a mirror layer of this edition. At one place in the base text 〔T14n0450 0405c20〕 the Taishō issues a collation note, and that note cites directly the Ancient Traces on the Sūtra of the Original Vows of the Medicine Buddha and this work as witnesses — from which it may be known that these two books were already treated as collating witnesses to this sūtra at the time the canon was edited. This edition records it as a collating witness and does not take up its glosses |
IV. Scriptures and Treatises Cited in the Commentaries
Two classes, kept apart.
A · Works whose own texts this edition has collated
| Title | Canon number | Where it is fastened |
|---|---|---|
Yogācārabhūmi | T30n1579 | The extensive explanation of the ten epithets is referred to this treatise — 「廣釋十號,如《瑜伽》等」—“For the extensive explanation of the ten epithets, see the Yogācārabhūmi and the rest.” 〔T38n1770 0258a01〕; the names of the threefold precepts are the same as its three treasuries of precepts — 「謂律儀戒所攝戒藏,攝善法戒所攝戒藏,饒益有情戒所攝戒藏」—“namely the treasury of precepts gathered under the restraint precepts, the treasury of precepts gathered under the precepts embracing wholesome dharmas, and the treasury of precepts gathered under the precepts benefiting sentient beings” 〔T30n1579 0514b11〕; and for the number of the bodhisattva precepts it too is cited, as 「四重四十五輕」—“four grave and forty-five light” 〔T38n1770 0261a05〕 |
B · Cited but not collated (this edition has not separately taken up their texts as a textual ground)
All the works below are cited by the line-by-line mirror. This edition records its citations and its anchors as they stand, inferring nothing as to whether the works survive, and taking up no other text on their behalf to supply corroboration.
| Title | Words cited | Anchor | What it explains |
|---|---|---|---|
| 佛地論, Treatise on the Buddha-Bhūmi | 「自在熾盛與端嚴,名稱吉祥及尊貴,如是六種義差別,應知總名為薄伽」—“Sovereign freedom, blazing intensity, and dignity; renown, auspiciousness, and nobility: such are the six distinctions of sense, and all together they should be known as bhaga.” | 〔T38n1770 0257b12〕 | The verse gathering up the six senses of Bhagavān |
| 大集經, Great Collection Sūtra | 「有六種堅固:一法身得住堅固、二解脫得住堅固、三禪定得住堅固、四多聞得住堅固、五福德得住堅固、六鬪諍得住堅固」—“There are six kinds of firmness: first, firmness in the abiding of the Dharma-body; second, firmness in the abiding of liberation; third, firmness in the abiding of meditative concentration; fourth, firmness in the abiding of wide learning; fifth, firmness in the abiding of merit; sixth, firmness in the abiding of strife and contention.” | 〔T38n1770 0257c07〕 | The ground of the three ages — the True Dharma, the Semblance Dharma, and the Final Dharma |
| 涅槃經, Nirvāṇa Sūtra | 「一切女人皆是眾惡之所住處」—“All women are the dwelling place of the multitude of evils.” | 〔T38n1770 0258c05〕 | The gloss on the suffering of a woman’s body in vow eight; and separately the matter of the woman of the āmra tree born of moisture, used to raise the question of birth by transformation in the Pure Land 〔T38n1770 0260a26〕 |
Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom (the commentary writes 《智論》, The Great Treatise) | 「齋日持八戒者,是日惡鬼逐人,欲奪人命」—“as for those who keep the eight precepts on a fast day — on that day evil ghosts pursue people and would snatch away their lives” | 〔T38n1770 0260a19〕 | Whence the eight-precept fast arose; and it is cited again, 「臨終心猛,勝百年功」—“a fierce mind at the point of death surpasses a hundred years of merit” 〔T38n1770 0260a25〕, to answer the doubt raised between ten recollections of the name and a year of keeping the fast |
| 梵網經, Brahmā’s Net Sūtra | 「十重四十八輕」—“ten grave and forty-eight light” | 〔T38n1770 0261a05〕 | One of the three houses on the number of the bodhisattva precepts, set beside the Vaipulya scriptures’ 「四重二十八輕」—“four grave and twenty-eight light” 〔T38n1770 0261a04〕 and the Yogācārabhūmi’s 「四重四十五輕」—“four grave and forty-five light” |
| 阿脩羅經, Asura Sūtra | 「琉璃光菩薩遇智勝佛初發總願,寶頂佛所始發別願」—“The Bodhisattva Beryl Radiance, meeting the Buddha Wisdom-Surpassing, first made the general vow; and in the presence of the Buddha Jewel-Crest he first made the particular vows.” | 〔T38n1770 0258a06〕 | Whence that buddha’s original vows arose |
Sūtra of the Buddhas of the Ten Directions Appearing Before One | 「青龍光佛所發十二誓願」—“the twelve vows made in the presence of the Buddha Blue-Dragon Radiance” | 〔T38n1770 0258a08〕 | The same |
Sūtra of the Pure Land Samādhi | 「同生同名,一神俱生」—“born together and named together, one spirit born along with him” | 〔T38n1770 0261c03〕 | That the teaching of the co-born spirit has ground |
Sūtra of the Dharma Society | 「貧者一燈亦得成」—“for one who is poor, a single lamp too brings it to completion” | 〔T38n1770 0262a12〕 | The measure of an offering: the number is the measure of completeness, not the threshold of entry |
V. The Scope of Sanskrit and of Modern Materials
This edition treats no modern Sanskrit critical edition and no modern scholar as an authority over the wording of the sūtra. Roman script serves only as a pronunciation aid, and must rest upon what the ancient masters transmitted — such transmission occurs in three places: a commentator’s interlinear 「梵云/唐云」, a transliteration in an alternate translation, and a transliteration in the sūtra itself. Where none of the three yields a form, none is supplied.
On this ground the Sanskrit of that buddha is written Bhaiṣajyaguru Vaiḍūryaprabha: Yijing’s recension transliterates the name graph by graph within the great dhāraṇī spoken by the Medicine Buddha himself 〔T14n0451 0414b29〕, and this is not a modern reconstruction; and since 「薜琉璃」 = vaiḍūrya, the 「琉璃」 series is rendered beryl. For the names of the twelve yakṣa generals none of the three commentaries yields a Sanskrit form, and so the Chinese sound is kept and no reconstruction is attempted. Where the ancient masters transmitted nothing, nothing is supplied: no reconstructed form is invented for a dhāraṇī, a proper name, or a technical term.
Tibetan translations and modern manuscript materials do not enter into the textual adjudications of this edition; where they are used merely to explain what survives and what is lost of a recension, their limited role is stated expressly.

This bibliography lists the base text, the line-by-line mirror, and the works read alongside them on which this edition actually rests, and it distinguishes honestly between works collated graph by graph against their own canonical text and works cited but not so collated. Works cited only in passing in a single chapter are governed by the canon numbers and page anchors given under topics three and eight of that chapter's Apparatus. Authority is confined to scripture and to the ancient masters; no modern study is listed as a doctrinal ground. Titles and attributions are taken from each work's own opening and colophon in the canon, not from secondary report.
I. The Base Text
| Title | Translator · Period | Canon number | Extent | Standing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Sūtra of the Original Vows of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva | Tang · Śikṣānanda | T13n0412 | two fascicles, thirteen chapters | Base text; the Source-Text layer and the stable anchor system of the whole edition, running from the title at the head of fascicle one to the title at the close of fascicle two |
There is no alternate recension of this sūtra in the canon. Topic two of the Apparatus is therefore empty in all thirteen chapters, and says so plainly while recording what was searched. That the Tang catalogues do not record this sūtra is recorded without adjudication.
II. One Mirror, Three Canon Numbers
There is a single line-by-line mirror. The three numbers separately issued in the Zokuzōkyō come from Lingcheng's one hand: X21n0382 and X21n0383 are the front matter of X21n0384, and they do not constitute three differing commentaries.
| Title | Attribution · Period | Canon number | Standing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outline and Commentary on the Sūtra of the Original Vows of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva | Qing · compiled by Lingcheng | X21n0384 | The line-by-line mirror — six fascicles, glossing the sūtra phrase by phrase; principal anchor for the outline, for terms, and for doctrinal judgment |
| Guiding Thread to the Sūtra of the Original Vows of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva | Qing · composed by Lingcheng | X21n0383 | Front matter of the same book · glosses the title only; source of the title and of the sense of the name Kṣitigarbha |
| Outline of the Kṣitigarbha Sūtra | Qing · arranged by Yuexuan | X21n0382 | Front matter of the same book · headings only, no gloss; what the outline settles is Qinglian's, that is Lingcheng's, the arranging his disciple's |
- Why the work was written: 「迨今尚無撰集法門,殊為闕典」—“to this day no one has compiled a treatment of this teaching; it is a signal gap among the books” 〔X21n0383 0639a05〕.
- The lineage the author avows: 「嗣興天台教觀正宗第五世」—“fifth-generation successor in the orthodox lineage of Tiantai teaching and contemplation” 〔X21n0383 0639a22〕; the instruments of his reading are the house method of Tiantai, and are marked as his wherever used.
- The period is marked as Qing on the evidence of 「皇清康熙二十二年」—“the twenty-second year of Kangxi of the august Qing” 〔X21n0383 0652b02〕, while two prefaces at the front are dated to the fifth year of Jōkyō in Japan and the postface to the third year of Genroku. Composition in the Qing, printing in Japan — both recorded.
- The mirror's base text runs to three fascicles against the base text's two, so the linkage runs by chapter and never by fascicle; both arrangements are attested in the canon by 「地藏菩薩本願經〔二卷流通本作三卷〕」—“The Sūtra of the Original Vows of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva 〔in two fascicles; the circulating edition makes it three〕” 〔J31nB271 0821a07〕.
III. Sūtras of the Same Honored One (read alongside · not alternate recensions)
| Title | Translator · Period | Canon number | What it bears on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daśacakra-kṣitigarbha Sūtra | Tang · Xuanzang | T13n0411 | The scriptural ground of the name — 「安忍不動猶如大地,靜慮深密猶如祕藏」—“Patient and unmoving as the great earth; still in contemplation and deeply hidden as a secret store” 〔T13n0411 0722a08〕; most of what the mirror cites as “the Daśacakra” comes from this recension |
| Daśacakra Sūtra | translator unrecorded | T13n0410 | An alternate recension of the foregoing. Where the mirror cites “the Daśacakra” it draws on both; the mechanical ground is that 「阿鼻」 occurs nowhere in T13n0411 and twenty-nine times in T13n0410. The canon gives the attribution simply as “translator unrecorded”; some assign it to the Northern Liang catalogue, and this is recorded without adjudication |
| Sūtra of Divining the Requital of Good and Evil Karma | Sui · Bodhidīpa | T17n0839 | The third sūtra of the same honored one; the doubts recorded in the catalogues are set down without adjudication, and it is read alongside but never used as witness to wording |
A comparison is a lamp turned on this sūtra, not a scale weighing two sūtras.
IV. Cited by the Mirror and Collated Graph by Graph Here
Each of the works below has had its own canonical text drawn off into a line-anchored file; every citation carries that work's own canon number and page anchor, and the mirror's quotation of a work is never allowed to stand in for the work's own text. Where the mirror's quotation and the text diverge, both are recorded under topic nine of the chapter concerned.
A · Sūtras
| Title | Translator · Period | Canon number | What it bears on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dīrgha Āgama | Later Qin · Buddhayaśas and Zhu Fonian | T01n0001 | The chapter on the hells in the Sūtra of the Record of the World — the Uninterrupted is there given a single sense of its name, set beside this sūtra's five |
| Lotus Sūtra | Later Qin · Kumārajīva | T09n0262 | Source of the phrase “house on fire,” which occurs once in this sūtra |
| Sūtra of Amitābha Spoken by the Buddha | Later Qin · Kumārajīva | T12n0366 | Hearing a name and thereby not turning back — set beside chapter nine and read together, with no judgment of better or worse |
| Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra | Song · Huiyan and others | T12n0375 | The simile of the seven jewels, cited by the mirror in glossing “store” |
| Mahāmāyā Sūtra | Southern Qi · Tanjing | T12n0383 | That the Buddha's ascent to the Heaven of the Thirty-Three to teach for his mother has a sūtra of its own |
| The Sūtra of the Original Vows and Merits of the Medicine Buddha, Beryl Radiance Tathāgata | Tang · Xuanzang | T14n0450 | The companion sūtra on the same axis; the roll of nine untimely deaths, which the mirror invokes as “the great untimely deaths” |
| Sūtra of the Four Heavenly Kings | Liu Song · Zhiyan and Baoyun | T15n0590 | The scriptural ground of the ten fast days |
| Sūtra of Golden Light | Northern Liang · Dharmakṣema | T16n0663 | The recension the mirror follows when it cites “the Golden Light”; the ground is that 「我等四王二十八部諸鬼神等」 occurs in this recension and in neither T16n0664 nor T16n0665 |
| Combined Sūtra of Golden Light | Sui · compiled by Baogui | T16n0664 | Collated as a control in fixing which recension is followed |
| Golden Light Sūtra of the Most Excellent King | Tang · Yijing | T16n0665 | Collated as a control; not the recension the mirror follows |
| The Ullambana Sūtra Spoken by the Buddha | Western Jin · Dharmarakṣa | T16n0685 | The pattern of a filial child making offerings for a dead mother, sharing its spine with the two accounts of former lives |
| Sūtra of the Causes and Conditions of Lamp-Finger | Later Qin · Kumārajīva | T16n0703 | The scriptural source of the words “poverty has great power” — they are the elder Lamp-Finger's own lament, which the mirror quotes; they are not the mirror's own |
B · Treatises
| Title | Composed · Translated | Canon number | What it bears on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom | Nāgārjuna · tr. Kumārajīva, Later Qin | T25n1509 | The ground for giving as the auxiliary path; the Brahmā king's five kinds of voice |
| Abhidharma Mahāvibhāṣā Śāstra | five hundred arhats · tr. Xuanzang, Tang | T27n1545 | That the five signs of decay among the gods are of two kinds, lesser and greater |
| Abhidharmakośa | Vasubandhu · tr. Xuanzang, Tang | T29n1558 | The sense of the name Uninterrupted (the treatise taking only the one sense of suffering); the usual roll of the five deeds of immediate retribution; the fruit of the signs of decay |
| Yogācārabhūmi | Maitreya · tr. Xuanzang, Tang | T30n1579 | The four kinds of śramaṇa and like terms |
C · Commentaries and Reference Works
| Title | Author · Period | Canon number | What it bears on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Words and Phrases of the Golden Light Sūtra | Sui · spoken by Zhiyi, recorded by Guanding | T39n1785 | The spine of the mirror's gloss on the earth spirit comes from here — 「智度法門常無改變,義曰堅牢,常也。 能生,淨也,名之為地」—“The teaching of the perfection of wisdom is constant and never alters: its sense is called firm-and-stable, which is permanence. That it can bear is bliss. That it can generate is purity. This is what is named earth” 〔T39n1785 0076c07〕. The weight of the Golden Light comparison lies in the commentary layer, not only in the sūtra layer |
| Comprehensive Record of the Buddhas and Patriarchs | Song · composed by Zhipan | T49n2035 | One source of the other tradition's five names for the Uninterrupted; the roll of the ten kings of the underworld — where the work itself states that only six can be verified |
| Collection of Translated Terms and Their Meanings | Song · compiled by Fayun | T54n2131 | A separate ancient attestation of the form 「
| Chart of the Establishment of the Dharma Realm | Ming · recorded by Renchao | X57n0972 | The other source of that tradition's five names |
| Knowing the Fords of the Canon | Ming · compiled by Zhixu | J31nB271 | A chapter-by-chapter précis of this sūtra; the canonical attestation that both the two- and three-fascicle arrangements circulated |
V. Later Transmission, Each Marked for What It Is
| Title | Author · Period | Canon number | Genre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rite of Repentance and Vows in Praise and Veneration of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva | Ming · composed by Zhixu | X74n1486 | Ritual witness — the author avows 「敬宗十輪」—“I take the Daśacakra reverently as my source” 〔X74n1486 0587a04〕, and the wording of his great hymn comes from the Daśacakra and not from this sūtra; never a witness to this sūtra's wording |
| Ritual of the Bodhimaṇḍa for Kṣitigarbha's Compassionate Rescue from Suffering, the Offering of Blessings and the Benefit of the Living | Song · compiled by Yuanzhao | ZW06n0052 | Bodhimaṇḍa rite — proclaims the sūtra chapter by chapter and lists all thirteen chapter-names; the three graphs “bow to Amitābha” in one verse are a Pure Land accretion, recorded without adjudication |
| Ritual of the Bodhimaṇḍa of the Tathāgata's Broad Filiality and the Ten Kinds of Requital of Kindness | Southern Song · compiled by Sijue | ZW08n0068 | Bodhimaṇḍa rite — names the work outright and cites chapter seven; its citation both conflates and alters at one place each, recorded without adjudication |
| Jeweled Repentance of the Dharma-Wheel for the Great Water-and-Land Feast of Saints and Ordinary Beings of the Dharma Realm | Qing · recorded by Zhiguan | X74n1499 | Repentance rite — a short verdict on each chapter |
| Attested Meaning of the Baizhang Rules of Purity | Qing · attested by Yirun | X63n1244 | Monastic code — the verse of chapter twelve as recited at the Kṣitigarbha festival, differing from the base text by one graph; recorded without adjudication |
| Records of Miraculous Responses to Images of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva | Song · compiled by Changjin | X87n1638 | Records of response — its opening excerpts chapter two, with several divergences from the base text |
| Gazetteer of Mount Jiuhua | Republican · revised by Yinguang | GA072n0077 | Gazetteer — excerpts the two accounts of former lives from chapter four in full; it is also the only work outside this sūtra and its mirror in which the twenty-eight and seven benefits are found quoted |
VI. Cited by the Mirror but Not Collated Here
The following are cited by the mirror or by works of later transmission; this edition reproduces the citation and its anchor, and neither asserts anything about the work's survival nor substitutes another text for it: the Tattvasiddhi, T32n1646 (the treatise to which the other tradition's five names are ascribed, though not one of the four forms occurs in it — the source is unascertained and is recorded without adjudication); the Essential Record of the Responses of the Three Jewels, T51n2084 (compiled by Feizhuo, Song); the Six Tablets of the Śākya Clan, B13n0079 (compiled by Yichu); the Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Du of Meixi in Dongshan, J39nB447; and the Outline and Commentary on the Repentance of the Compassionate Bodhimaṇḍa, X74n1496 (attested by Xizong, Qing).
Where the mirror cites a work that is not in hand — as with the record it points to in glossing 「魍魎」 — that it is not in hand is recorded as it stands and nothing is supplied in its place.
VII. The Bounds of Sanskrit and of Modern Materials
This edition treats no modern Sanskrit edition and no modern scholar as an authority over the wording of the text. Roman script serves only as an aid to pronunciation and must rest on what the ancient masters transmitted — in the mirror's gloss (「梵語」/「梵名」/「此云」/「唐言」), in a transliteration in a sūtra of the same honored one, or in a transliteration in the sūtra itself. Where none of the three yields a form, none is supplied.
The forms this mirror transmits number fourteen and cover persons, places, objects, and colors, each anchored under topic six of its chapter. Among them: 「地藏之名準佛說八大菩薩曼陀羅經」—“the name Kṣitigarbha follows the Sūtra of the Maṇḍala of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas Spoken by the Buddha” 〔X21n0383 0639c23〕, 「應云乞灑」—“it should be said kṣa” 〔X21n0383 0639c24〕〔the two graphs joined as one syllable〕hara-ja, 「義翻地藏」—“rendered by sense as the store of the earth” 〔X21n0383 0639c24〕; 「梵名涅哩鋤,此翻堅牢」—“the Sanskrit name is Nielichu; here it is rendered Firm-and-Stable” 〔X21n0384 0748b05〕; 「梵語誐誐曩獻惹,此云虗空藏」—“in Sanskrit Ege'nangxianre; here it means the store of space” 〔X21n0384 0765b13〕.
Where the ancient worthy says plainly that a name is not ascertained, that is recorded as it stands: 「悅帝利未詳」—“Yuedili: not ascertained” 〔X21n0384 0674b03〕; and of the six transliterated king-names, 「祁利失王等,未見翻譯」—“King Qilishi and the rest: no rendering has been found” 〔X21n0384 0725b02〕. Where the ancient masters transmitted nothing, nothing is invented — not for proper names, not for technical terms, not for numbered sets.
Tibetan and modern manuscript materials do not enter into any decision about the wording of this edition.
