Song of Realizing the Way · Song of Realizing the Way

〔T48 0395c06〕
心要Essence

There is a man in the Song of Realizing the Way who says of himself that he is poor: “A poor son of Śākya says with his mouth that he is poor; in truth the body is poor, the Way is not poor.” This piece does not follow the song’s twenty-four sections. It only follows this poor monk and looks at what he carries on him, and what he does not.

On Him There Is Only a Ragged Robe

“Poor: the body always wears a tattered coarse robe”. Beyond the ragged robe the song names a few more things: a bowl, a staff, metal rings—“The bowl that subdued the dragon, the staff that parted the tigers; the golden rings on the staff’s two prongs ring clear and clear.” But the song says at once that these are “not held for show, as an empty affair”; they are not for making an appearance. Counting further down, where he lives is “deep mountains,” a “hermitage,” “a wild monk’s house,” and what keeps him company is “the river moon shines, the pine wind blows”. A man’s whole estate, and it is counted.

In His Heart He Hides a Jewel

“The Way: the heart hides a priceless treasure”. This jewel changes its name several times in the song. The first time it is “the maṇi jewel that people do not recognize”, kept inside the tathāgata-womb; the second time it is the wish-fulfilling jewel, “Once one can understand this wish-fulfilling jewel, benefiting oneself and benefiting others never runs dry.”; the third time it is the wish-fulfilling jewel again, “I now explain this wish-fulfilling jewel; all who receive it in faith accord with it.” Three appearances: the first, people do not recognize it; the second, he himself can understand it; the third, he explains it for others to hear. The whole song is the course of this jewel from unrecognized to spoken aloud.

The Jewel Is Not Something Cultivated

The poor monk never says how he came by the jewel. What the song says is the opposite: “neither removing deluded thoughts nor seeking the true”, “awakened, it is done; no effort applied”, “Cannot be taken, cannot be rejected; in the ungraspable it is just so obtained.” The jewel was in the tathāgata-womb all along; to practice is to recognize it, not to make it. That is why he is poor: so poor that he does not even set up “practice” as a separate thing. “Only get the root; do not worry over the branches”: once the root is got, the branches need no worrying.

When Others Revile Him, He Drinks Sweet Dew

A poor monk who says he has a priceless treasure will of course be reviled. The song has only one attitude toward this: “let them slander, let them find fault”, “when I hear it, it is just like drinking sweet dew”. Why can he be like this? Because the jewel is there, and it does not matter whether the robe is torn; because “not on account of ridicule and slander does he raise enmity or affection”: there is no self there to be reviled. This is not composure; it is the jewel’s use: “benefiting beings, answering to occasions, never stinting”. Even the one who reviles him becomes his good friend.

At the End He Says: I Will Settle It for You

The song’s last line is “If you have not understood, I now settle it for you”. The poor monk takes out the jewel for you to see—“Clearly, clearly seeing, there is not one thing; there is no person and no buddha.” The jewel brought out turns out to be not one thing. This is why he is poor, and why he is not poor. If, having read this piece, you are still looking for the jewel, go back to the first line: “neither removing deluded thoughts nor seeking the true.”

白話Plain reading

The Song of Realizing the Way of Yongjia, T48n2014, complete, from “Have you not seen” to “if you have not understood, I now settle it for you”: two hundred and sixty-seven lines, divided by the sense of the song into twenty-four segments, with one further segment on the title and attribution that sets out the title, the signature, and the closing title. One natural paragraph to a segment, rendered line by line. The figures (…) at the head of each segment give the Taishō page, register, and line.

〔0 · Title and attribution〕(0395c06)“Song of Realizing the Way of Yongjia”—this is the song of realizing the Way composed by Yongjia. Below the title it is signed “composed by the śramaṇa Xuanjue of Shenshui, of the Tang”: composed by Xuanjue, a śramaṇa of Shenshui in the Tang dynasty. At the end of the piece it closes with “Song of Realizing the Way of Yongjia, ends,” marking that the whole song finishes there.

〔1 · Have you not seen〕(0395c09)Have you not seen? That man of the Way at leisure, done with learning, practicing non-doing, does not remove deluded thoughts and does not seek the true either. The real nature of ignorance is itself buddha-nature; the empty body formed by illusion is itself the dharma-body. When the dharma-body is awakened to, there is not one thing; the original self-nature is the naturally true buddha. The five aggregates are like drifting clouds, coming and going in emptiness; the three poisons are like bubbles on water, rising and sinking in vain. When the real mark is realized, there is no person and no dharma, and in a single instant the karma of the Avīci hell is extinguished. If I were to deceive beings with false words, I would bring upon myself the retribution of having my tongue pulled out, through kalpas as many as dust and sand.

〔2 · Suddenly awakened to the dhyāna of the Tathāgata〕(0395c14)Suddenly awakened—this is the dhyāna of the Tathāgata; the six pāramitās and myriad practices are complete within the body. In a dream, clearly, clearly, there are the six destinies; after waking, empty, empty, there is not even the great thousandfold world. There is no sin and no merit, no loss and no gain; in the nature of quiescence, do not ask and do not search. The dust-covered mirror of all this while has never been polished; today, distinctly, it must be taken apart and laid open. Who is without thought? Who is without arising? If it is truly non-arising, then there is nothing that does not arise.

〔3 · Call the mechanical wooden man and ask him〕(0395c18)Call that mechanical wooden man over and ask him: seeking buddhahood by applying effort and exerting strength, when will it ever be achieved? Let go the four elements and do not grasp them; in the nature of quiescence, drink and peck as your lot allows. All formations are impermanent, all is empty—this is the Tathāgata’s great and perfect awakening. A decisive statement shows a true monk; if anyone will not accept it, let him question it as his feelings please. Cutting straight to the root-source is what the Buddha sealed; plucking leaves and hunting for branches, I cannot do.

〔4 · The maṇi jewel people do not recognize〕(0395c22)People do not recognize the maṇi jewel; within the tathāgata-womb it is received in person. Its six kinds of spiritual function are empty and yet not empty; one orb of perfect light is form and yet not form. The five eyes purified, the five powers gained—only by realization can it be known; it is hard to fathom. Seeing a form in a mirror, the seeing is not hard; scooping the moon out of water, how could it be picked up in the hand? Always walking alone, always striding alone, those who have arrived roam together on the road of nirvāṇa.

〔5 · Of ancient tone and clear spirit〕(0395c26)Ancient and plain in tone, clear and bright in spirit, his bearing is naturally lofty; haggard in face and hard in bone, he gets not a glance from the world. The poor son of Śākya calls himself poor with his own mouth; truly, it is the body that is poor—the Way is not poor. Poor: that is, the body always wears a tattered, coarse robe; the Way: that is, the heart hides a priceless treasure. This priceless treasure is used without end; benefiting beings and answering to occasions, it never stints from first to last. The three bodies and four wisdoms are complete within the body; the eight liberations and six supernormal powers are the seal of the mind-ground.

〔6 · The superior person settles it at one stroke〕(0396a01)The superior person settles it at one stroke, and everything is finished; the middling and lesser hear the more, and the more they disbelieve. Only undo the soiled robe in your own bosom—who would go boasting of his diligence to others? Let them slander, let them find fault: taking fire to burn the sky only tires oneself in vain. When I hear it, it is just like drinking sweet dew; melting away, I enter at once the inconceivable. To see harsh words as merit—this makes them my good friend. Not raising thoughts of enmity or affection on account of ridicule and slander—otherwise, how would the power of non-arising’s kindly patience be shown? The source penetrated, the teaching penetrated too; concentration and wisdom are perfectly bright, not stuck in emptiness. It is not only I who have now arrived alone; the buddhas as many as the Ganges sands are all the same in body. And the lion’s roar is the fearless speech; the hundred beasts hear it and their skulls all split; the fragrant elephant flees and loses its majesty; the gods and dragons listen in stillness and give rise to joy.

〔7 · Roaming rivers and seas, crossing mountains and streams〕(0396a09)Roaming rivers and seas, crossing mountains and streams, seeking teachers and asking after the Way—it was for the practice of Chan. Since I came to know the road to Caoxi, I have understood that birth and death do not concern me. Walking is Chan, sitting is Chan; in speech and silence, in movement and stillness, the body is at peace. Even meeting a sword’s edge, I am always calm and at ease; even given poison, I am still unhurried and at leisure. My teacher came to see Dīpaṃkara Buddha; for many kalpas he was once the sage of patience. How many times born, how many times dead—birth and death drift on, with no fixed end; since the sudden awakening, understanding non-arising, what in all honor and disgrace is there to grieve or to delight in? Entering the deep mountains, dwelling in a hermitage, beneath tall pines on lofty, secluded heights; sitting at ease in the house of a wild monk, dwelling in stillness and quiet—truly free and unencumbered.

〔8 · Awakened, it is done; no effort applied〕(0396a16)Awakened, it is done; no effort is applied—it is not the same as any of the conditioned dharmas. Giving while dwelling on marks earns the merit of birth in heaven, like shooting an arrow upward into empty space: when its force is spent, the arrow still falls back, and brings on a next life that does not go as one wishes. How could that compare with the gate of the real mark of non-doing—in one leap enter straight into the ground of the Tathāgata. Only get the root, and do not worry over the branches, like pure beryl holding the jeweled moon. Once one can understand this wish-fulfilling jewel, benefiting oneself and benefiting others never runs dry from first to last.

〔9 · The river moon shines, the pine wind blows〕(0396a21)The moonlight on the river shines, the wind among the pines blows; through the long night, the clear evening, what is being done? Buddha-nature, the jewel of the precepts, the seal of the mind-ground; mist, dew, cloud, and haze are all the robe upon the body. The bowl that subdued the evil dragon, the staff that parted the fighting tigers—the golden rings on the staff’s two prongs ring out clear and clear. This is not held in the hand to put forms on show, an empty affair; these are the traces the Tathāgata’s jeweled staff left in person.

〔10 · Not seeking the true, not cutting off the deluded〕(0396a24)Not seeking the true, not cutting off the deluded—understanding that these two dharmas are empty and without mark. No mark, no emptiness, and no non-emptiness either—this is the Tathāgata’s true real mark. The mind-mirror shines clear without obstruction; vast and crystalline, it pervades worlds as many as sand. The myriad forms in their array appear as images within it; one orb of perfect light is neither inside nor outside.

〔11 · A wide-open emptiness that dismisses cause and effect〕(0396a27)Falling broadly into emptiness, brushing aside cause and effect—reckless and vast, one invites calamity. Abandoning being and clinging to emptiness is the same sickness, like fleeing from drowning and throwing oneself into fire. Rejecting the deluded mind to take hold of the true principle—this mind of taking and rejecting becomes cunning falsehood. Students who do not understand take it up to practice with, and deeply they come to mistake the thief for their son. The loss of the dharma-wealth and the destruction of merit come from nothing other than this mind, intellect, and consciousness. Therefore the gate of Chan finishes with this mind, and enters at once the power of knowledge and vision of non-arising.

〔12 · The great man grips the sword of wisdom〕(0396b03)The great man grips the sword of wisdom: prajñā is its edge, vajra is its flame. Not only does it crush the minds of outsiders to nothing; long ago it already frightened the gall out of the heavenly demons. Sounding the dharma-thunder, beating the dharma-drum, spreading clouds of kindness and compassion, sprinkling sweet dew. Where the dragons and elephants tread, the moistening is boundless; the three vehicles and five natures all wake to awakening. The rich grass of the Snow Mountains has no admixture at all; it yields pure ghee, which I always take in.

〔13 · One nature pervades all natures〕(0396b07)One nature perfectly pervades all natures; one dharma everywhere holds all dharmas. One moon appears everywhere in all waters; the moons in all the waters are all gathered in the one moon. The dharma-body of all buddhas enters my nature; my nature is joined together with the Tathāgata. One ground is complete with all grounds; it is not form, not mind, and not action. In a fingersnap the eighty thousand dharma-gates are perfected; in an instant three incalculable kalpas are extinguished. All numbers and phrases are not numbers and phrases—what have they to do with my numinous awakening?

〔14 · It cannot be reviled, cannot be praised〕(0396b12)It cannot be reviled, cannot be praised; its body is like empty space, without shore. Never leaving this very place, it is always limpid; the moment you go searching, you know you cannot see it. Taking, it cannot be taken; rejecting, it cannot be rejected; within the ungraspable, it is obtained just so. When silent, it is speaking; when speaking, it is silent; the gate of great giving stands open, with nothing blocking it.

〔15 · Someone asks me what school I understand〕(0396b15)Someone asks me what school I understand; I answer him: it is the power of mahāprajñā. Right or wrong, people cannot recognize it; going against or going with, even heaven cannot fathom it. I have long since passed through many kalpas of cultivation; I am not idly deceiving you. Raising the dharma-banner and establishing the tenet, clearly, clearly, the Buddha’s decree is Caoxi. First was Kāśyapa, who began the transmission of the lamp; twenty-eight generations are the record of the western land. The dharma flowed east and entered this land; Bodhidharma was the first patriarch. For six generations the robe was passed down, known throughout the world; of those after who gained the Way, how could there be an end to their number?

〔16 · The true is not set up; the deluded is originally empty〕(0396b20)The true cannot be set up; the deluded is originally empty; being and nothing are dismissed together, and even “non-emptiness” is emptied. The twenty gates of emptiness were never clung to from the start; one nature and the Tathāgata are naturally the same in body. Mind is the faculty, dharma is the dust; these two are like marks on the face of a mirror. When marks and grime are wholly removed, the light at last appears; when mind and dharma are both forgotten, the nature is the true.

〔17 · Alas, the final age of the dharma, an evil time〕(0396b24)Alas, the final age of the dharma, an evil and turbid time: beings are thin in merit and hard to tame. The further from the sage, the deeper the wrong views; the demons are strong and the dharma weak, and there is much fear and harm. Hearing of the Tathāgata’s dharma-gate of the sudden teaching, they wish they could wipe it out and smash it like a tile. The doing is in the mind, the calamity is in the body; there is no need to complain, still less to go blaming others. If you would not bring on the karma of the uninterrupted hell, do not slander the Tathāgata’s wheel of the right dharma.

〔18 · In the sandalwood forest there are no other trees〕(0396b28)In the sandalwood forest there are no other trees; dense and deep, it is where the lion dwells. In the quiet of its realm it roams alone in the grove; running beasts and flying birds all keep far away. The lion’s cubs follow behind; at three years they can already roar aloud. If it is a jackal that would chase the king of the dharma, even if it played the goblin for a hundred years, it would only open its mouth in vain.

〔19 · The perfect and sudden teaching has no room for human sentiment〕(0396c02)The perfect and sudden teaching makes no allowance for human sentiment; where there is doubt that cannot be resolved, one must argue it straight out. It is not that this mountain monk flaunts the view of self and other; it is that practice may fall into the deep pit of the views of annihilation and permanence. Wrong is wrong, right is right—off by a hair’s breadth, astray by a thousand miles. Right, and the dragon girl suddenly becomes a buddha; wrong, and Sunakṣatra sinks down alive.

〔20 · In my early years I piled up learning〕(0396c05)From my early years on I piled up learning, and I too once searched the commentaries and hunted through the sūtras and treatises. Distinguishing names and marks without knowing when to stop, like entering the sea to count the sand, I only wore myself out in vain. And so I was bitterly rebuked by the Tathāgata: counting another’s treasures—what gain is there in that? All along I stumbled and made no headway, and came to feel it was an empty journey; for many years I was, in vain, a traveler in the wind and dust.

〔21 · With a wrong seed-nature and mistaken understanding〕(0396c08)With a crooked seed-nature and mistaken understanding, they do not reach the Tathāgata’s perfect and sudden rule. The two vehicles are diligent but without the mind of the Way; the outsiders are clever but without wisdom. Foolish, and childishly dull besides, on an empty fist and a pointing finger they produce an understanding of something real. Taking the finger for the moon, they apply effort in vain; within faculties, objects, and dharmas they falsely fabricate monsters. Not seeing a single dharma is the Tathāgata; only then may one be called the one who contemplates at ease.

〔22 · Understood, the obstruction of karma is originally empty〕(0396c12)Understood, the obstruction of karma is originally empty; not yet understood, one must still repay the old debts. Starving, one meets the king’s banquet and cannot eat; sick, one meets the king of physicians—how could one be cured? Practicing Chan amid desire is the power of knowledge and vision, like a lotus born in fire that is never destroyed. Yongshi broke a grave precept, awakened to non-arising, long ago became a buddha, and is here to this day.

〔23 · The lion’s roar, the fearless speech〕(0396c16)The lion’s roar is the fearless speech. Deeply I sigh over those muddled and stubborn as thick, tough hide: they know only that breaking a grave precept obstructs bodhi, and do not see the secret key the Tathāgata opened. There were two monks who committed lust and killing; Upāli, with his firefly’s glimmer, only added to the knot of their sin; the great layman Vimalakīrti removed their doubt at once, like the blazing sun melting frost and snow. The power of inconceivable liberation, its wondrous use as many as the Ganges sands, is without limit. With the four kinds of offering, would I dare decline the toil? Ten thousand taels of gold could be consumed as well. To grind the bones and shatter the body would not suffice to repay it; one phrase clearly understood surpasses a hundred billion. The king among dharmas is highest and most excellent; Tathāgatas as many as the Ganges sands realize it together. I now understand this wish-fulfilling jewel; all who receive it in faith can accord with it.

〔24 · Clearly, clearly seeing, there is not one thing〕(0396c23)Clearly and distinctly seeing: there is not one thing, there is no person, and there is no buddha. The great thousandfold worlds, as many as sand, are bubbles in the sea; all the sages and worthies are like a flash of lightning brushing past. Even if an iron wheel were spinning on top of my head, concentration and wisdom, perfectly bright, would never be lost. The sun may turn cold and the moon may turn hot, but the host of demons cannot destroy this true teaching. The elephant-drawn carriage advances in grandeur, going calmly along the road—who has ever seen a mantis able to block its wheel-track? The great elephant does not roam the rabbit’s path; great awakening is not bound by small rules. Do not take a view through a tube and slander the blue heavens; for you who have not yet understood, I today speak out this one settling word.

義疏Exposition

The first line of the Song of Realizing the Way of Yongjia is “Have you not seen? The man of the Way at leisure, done with learning, practicing non-doing, neither removes deluded thoughts nor seeks the true.” In the usual language of practice, deluded thoughts are to be removed and the true is to be sought; this song sets both down the moment it opens its mouth, and calls the one who sets them down “the man of the Way at leisure.” Over the two hundred-odd lines that follow it speaks of sudden awakening, of poverty, of slander, of walking, standing, sitting, and lying, of the transmission of the lamp, of the final age of the dharma, of monks who have broken the grave precepts—a long circuit—and its last line is “If you have not understood, I now settle it for you”: you have not yet understood, so I will now break it open for you. This exposition follows the song’s twenty-four natural sections in twelve parts; and says only why each section follows the one before and where the whole song means to bring a person. The old commentary is kept for the final section.

I. The Man of the Way at Leisure: Not Removing Deluded Thoughts, Not Seeking the True

The song opens with “have you not seen”: three characters, used only once in the whole piece. It is not a refrain; it is a call: have you seen? What is seen is a person—“the man of the Way at leisure, done with learning, practicing non-doing.” Done with learning means no longer treating practice as a subject to be finished; non-doing is not doing nothing but not setting up further contrivance; at leisure means not tied down by the dust of toil. This person “neither removes deluded thoughts nor seeks the true”. Why may they go unremoved? The next line answers: “The real nature of ignorance is buddha-nature; the empty body of illusion is the dharma-body.” The real nature of ignorance is buddha-nature, and the empty body of illusion is the dharma-body—deluded thought has no separate substance to remove, and the true has no separate place to be sought. Then the song says this dharma-body through: “The dharma-body awakened, there is not one thing; the original self-nature is the naturally true buddha.” Once awakened there is not one thing to be had; the original self-nature is the buddha, naturally true. The five aggregates are like drifting clouds, the three poisons like bubbles on water, and “Realizing the real mark, there is neither person nor dharma; in an instant the karma of Avīci is extinguished.”: realizing the real mark, person and dharma are both empty, and the karma of Avīci is gone in an instant. Fearing people will not believe, the song adds an oath: “If I deceive beings with false words, I bring on myself the tongue-pulling for kalpas numberless as dust.” This is the first section and the keynote of the whole song: everything that follows grows from the seven characters “neither removing deluded thoughts nor seeking the true.”

The second section speaks of suddenness. “Suddenly awakened to the dhyāna of the Tathāgata, the six pāramitās and myriad practices are complete within the body.” Not reached step by step but awakened all at once; the six pāramitās and myriad practices are not done item by item but complete from the start within the awakened body. So the simile of dream and waking appears: “In the dream, clearly, clearly, there are six destinies; after waking, empty, empty, there is no great thousandfold world.” In the dream the six paths are vivid; on waking even the great thousandfold world is gone. Hence “No sin or merit, no loss or gain; in the nature of quiescence do not ask or seek.”; the dusty mirror was never polished before, and today it must be clearly taken apart. The last two lines are questions: “Who is without thought? Who is without arising? If truly without arising, there is nothing that does not arise.”: who is truly without thought, who truly without arising? If it is truly non-arising, there is nothing that does not arise.

II. Letting Go of the Four Elements, and the Maṇi Jewel

The third section uses a mechanical wooden man as a simile: “Call the mechanical wooden man and ask him: seeking buddhahood by applying effort, when will it be achieved?”: go and ask the puppet when seeking buddhahood by effort will succeed. The meaning follows the previous line, “if truly without arising, there is nothing that does not arise”: if one takes being without thought and without arising for a wooden blankness, then asking the wooden man when he will become a buddha will never get an answer—non-arising is not annihilation. So “Let go the four elements, do not grasp; in the nature of quiescence, drink and peck as you will.”: let go of the body of four elements, do not grasp it, and in the nature of quiescence drink and peck as conditions allow. “All formations are impermanent, all is empty: this is the Tathāgata’s great and perfect awakening.” Impermanence and emptiness are themselves the great and perfect awakening. This is a decisive statement, by which the speaker shows himself a true monk; “if anyone will not accept it, let him challenge as he pleases”: those who will not accept it may come and dispute. “Cutting straight to the root-source is what the Buddha sealed; plucking leaves and hunting branches, I cannot do.”: cutting straight to the root is what the Buddha sealed; picking among the leaves and branches, I cannot manage.

The fourth section changes the simile: “The maṇi jewel people do not recognize; it is received in person within the tathāgata-womb.” No one recognizes the maṇi jewel, and it is kept right there in the tathāgata-womb. This jewel’s “six kinds of spiritual function are empty and not empty; one orb of perfect light is form and not form.”: the wondrous functions of the six faculties are empty, yet not empty; one orb of perfect light is form, yet not form. “Purify the five eyes, gain the five powers; only by realization is it known—hard to fathom.” This line sets the measure: only after the five eyes and five powers are purified is it “known only by realization,” not something thought can gauge. “Seeing a form in a mirror is not hard; grasping the moon in the water, how could it be picked up?”: seeing a reflection in a mirror is not hard, but the moon in the water cannot be scooped out; knowing and seeing come easily, grasping does not. So “Always walking alone, always striding alone; those who have arrived roam together on the road of nirvāṇa.”: walking alone, striding alone, and roaming together with those who have arrived.

III. Poor in Body, Not Poor in the Way

The fifth section is the most human in the song. “Of ancient tone and clear spirit, his bearing is naturally lofty; haggard in face and hard in bone, people pay him no regard.” Ancient in tone, clear in spirit, his bearing naturally high; haggard of face, hard of bone, nobody takes notice. Then the confession: “A poor son of Śākya says with his mouth that he is poor; in truth the body is poor, the Way is not poor.” The poor monk says poor with his mouth; in truth the body is poor and the Way is not. “Poor: the body always wears a tattered coarse robe. The Way: the heart hides a priceless treasure.” On his body a ragged robe; in his heart a priceless treasure. This treasure is “used without end,” “benefiting beings, answering to occasions, never stinting”: it benefits beings and meets each occasion, and never holds back. The section ends by turning it into terms: “The three bodies and four wisdoms are complete within the body; the eight liberations and six supernormal powers are the seal of the mind-ground.”: three bodies and four wisdoms, eight liberations and six supernormal powers, all complete in this body, all one seal on the mind-ground. The poor man’s priceless treasure is this body.

IV. Slander and Patience: The Lion’s Roar

The sixth section begins with the superior person: “The superior person settles it at one stroke and all is finished; the middling and inferior hear much and mostly do not believe.” Those of superior root settle it at one stroke and all is done; those of middling and lesser root hear more and believe less. “Only undo the soiled robe in your own bosom; who would go boasting of diligence to others?”: just undo the dirty robe in your own bosom—who needs to boast of diligence outside? Next comes the song’s treatment of slander: “Let them slander, let them find fault; holding fire to burn the sky only tires oneself.” Let them slander and find fault; it is like taking a torch to burn the sky, and only wears oneself out. “When I hear it, it is just like drinking sweet dew; melting away, I enter at once the inconceivable.” I hear it as if drinking sweet dew, and in a moment it melts into the inconceivable. Hence “To see harsh words as merit—this makes them my good friend.” Harsh words are merit; the one who abuses me is my good friend. “Not on account of ridicule and slander does he raise enmity or affection; how else would the power of non-arising’s kindly patience be shown?”: only by not raising enmity or affection on account of slander is the power of non-arising patience displayed. This is not the patience of endurance; it is the patience of non-arising: there is no “I” that is slandered.

Then the song speaks of itself: “The source is penetrated and the teaching is penetrated; concentration and wisdom perfectly bright, not stuck in emptiness.” Penetrating the source and penetrating the teaching; concentration and wisdom perfectly bright, not falling into emptiness. “It is not that I alone have now arrived; the buddhas numberless as Ganges sand are all the same in body.” Not I alone have arrived; the buddhas as many as the Ganges sands are one in body. And so there is “the lion’s roar, the fearless speech”: the hundred beasts hear it and their skulls split, the fragrant elephant loses its majesty, and the gods and dragons listen in silence and rejoice.

V. Walking Is Chan, Sitting Is Chan

The seventh section is the pilgrimage. “Roaming rivers and seas, crossing mountains and streams, seeking teachers and asking after the Way, to practice Chan.” Over rivers, seas, mountains and streams, seeking teachers and the Way, all for the practice of Chan. “Since I came to know the road to Caoxi, I have understood that birth and death do not concern me.” Since recognizing this road of Caoxi, he knows that birth and death have nothing to do with him. Then the four lines of the song most often quoted: “Walking is Chan, sitting is Chan; speaking or silent, moving or still, the body is at peace.”: walking is Chan and sitting is Chan; speech and silence, motion and stillness—the body is at ease in all. “Even meeting the sword’s edge, always calm; even given poison, still at leisure.” Meeting the blade he is calm; given poison he is at leisure. The song cites its own teacher as witness: “My teacher came to see Dīpaṃkara Buddha; for many kalpas he was the sage of patience.”: Śākyamuni, many kalpas ago, was the sage of patience—the source of the “power of kindly patience” in Section IV. “How many times born, how many times dead; birth and death drift on with no fixed end.” So many births, so many deaths, drifting with no settled stop; “Since suddenly awakening to non-arising, what grief or joy in honor or disgrace?” After sudden awakening to non-arising, what in honor or disgrace is worth grief or joy? The section ends in the mountains: “entering the deep mountains, dwelling in a hermitage”, beneath tall pines, a wild monk’s house, dwelling in stillness.

The eighth section says the earlier “sudden awakening” once more, this time against the conditioned: “Awakened, it is done; no effort applied—unlike all conditioned dharmas.” Awakened, it is finished, with no effort applied; all conditioned dharmas are otherwise. “Giving while dwelling on marks earns the merit of birth in heaven, like shooting an arrow upward into empty space.” Giving that dwells on marks earns heavenly reward, like an arrow shot up into the sky: “when its force is spent, the arrow falls back”, bringing a next life that does not go as one wishes. “How can that compare with the gate of the real mark of non-doing, where in one leap one enters straight into the ground of the Tathāgata?”: how could it compare with the gate of the real mark, non-doing, in one leap entering straight into the ground of the Tathāgata? “Only get the root; do not worry over the branches”: once the root is got, the branches need no worrying—like pure beryl holding the jeweled moon. “Once one can understand this wish-fulfilling jewel, benefiting oneself and benefiting others never runs dry.”

VI. Robe and Bowl, and the Mind-Mirror

The ninth section paints a scene: “The river moon shines, the pine wind blows; in the long night and clear evening, what is there to do?” The river moon shines, the pine wind blows; through the long clear night, what is one doing? The answer is the robe and bowl themselves: “Buddha-nature, the jewel of the precepts, the seal of the mind-ground; mist, dew, cloud, and haze, the robe upon the body.”: buddha-nature is the jewel of the precepts, the seal of the mind-ground; mist and dew and cloud and haze are the robe on the body. “The bowl that subdued the dragon, the staff that parted the tigers; the golden rings on the staff’s two prongs ring clear and clear.” The dragon-subduing bowl, the tiger-parting staff, the golden rings ringing clear; “Not held for show, as an empty affair—they are the very traces of the Tathāgata’s jeweled staff.”: not held as an empty show of appearance, but the traces the Tathāgata’s own jeweled staff left behind.

The tenth section returns to the theme of the first: “Not seeking the true, not cutting off the deluded; understanding that both dharmas are empty and without mark.” Not seeking the true, not cutting off the deluded, because one knows that the two dharmas, true and deluded, are empty and markless. “No mark, no emptiness, no non-emptiness: this is the Tathāgata’s true real mark.”: no mark, no emptiness, and no non-emptiness either—this is the Tathāgata’s true real mark. Then the mind-mirror: “The mind-mirror shines clear without obstruction, vast and crystalline, pervading worlds as many as sand.” The mind-mirror reflects without hindrance, vast and clear, pervading worlds like sand; “The myriad forms in their array appear as images within it; one orb of perfect light is neither inside nor outside.” The myriad forms appear as images in the mirror, and one orb of perfect light is neither within nor without.

VII. Dismissing Emptiness, Taking and Rejecting, and the Sword of Wisdom

The eleventh section is the song’s warning about “emptiness,” set exactly against the first section’s “not removing deluded thoughts”: there it said do not remove; here it says do not dismiss either. “A wide-open emptiness that dismisses cause and effect, reckless and vast, invites calamity.” Using a free-and-easy emptiness to brush aside cause and effect, reckless and vast, brings calamity on oneself. “Abandoning being and clinging to emptiness, the sickness is the same—like fleeing drowning and leaping into fire.” To abandon being and cling to emptiness is the same sickness, like escaping water by jumping into fire. “Rejecting the deluded mind to take the true principle: this mind of taking and rejecting becomes a cunning falsehood.” Rejecting the deluded to take the true—this very mind of taking and rejecting becomes a clever fraud; “Students who do not understand use it to practice, and deeply mistake the thief for their son.” Students who do not understand take it up as practice, and that is exactly taking the thief for one’s child. “Losing the dharma-wealth and destroying merit—none of it but comes from this mind, intellect, and consciousness.” Loss of dharma-wealth and merit all comes from this mind, intellect, and consciousness. “Therefore the gate of Chan finishes with the mind, and enters at once the power of knowledge and vision of non-arising.”: so the gate of Chan finishes with this mind and enters at once the power of knowledge and vision of non-arising.

The twelfth section is the great man: “The great man grips the sword of wisdom; prajñā its edge, vajra its flame.” Gripping the sword of wisdom, prajñā its edge and vajra its flame; “Not only does it crush the mind of outsiders to nothing; long ago it made the gall of the heavenly demons drop.” Not only does it shatter the minds of outsiders; it long ago made the demons of heaven lose their nerve. Then the dharma-thunder, dharma-drum, cloud of kindness, and sweet dew: “Where dragons and elephants tread, the moistening is boundless; the three vehicles and five natures all awaken.”; “The rich grass of the Snow Mountains has no admixture; it yields pure ghee, which I always take in.”: the Snow Mountain grass has nothing mixed in; it yields pure ghee, and I take it in always.

VIII. One Moon Appears in All Waters

The thirteenth section is the most symmetrical set in the song: “One nature pervades all natures; one dharma holds all dharmas. One moon appears in all waters; the moons in all waters are gathered in one moon.” One nature runs through all natures, one dharma holds all dharmas; one moon appears in every water, and the moon in every water is gathered up by the one moon. “The dharma-body of all buddhas enters my nature; my nature is joined together with the Tathāgata.” The dharma-body of the buddhas enters my nature, and my nature joins with the Tathāgata. “One ground is complete with all grounds; it is not form, not mind, not action.” One ground holds all grounds; it is not form, not mind, not action. “In a fingersnap the eighty thousand gates are perfected; in an instant three incalculable kalpas are extinguished.”: in a fingersnap the eighty thousand gates are perfected, in an instant the three great incalculable kalpas are gone. “All phrases of number are not phrases of number; what have they to do with my numinous awakening?”: all these numbered phrases are not numbers—what have they to do with my numinous awakening?

The fourteenth section says this numinous awakening can be neither reviled nor praised: “It cannot be reviled, cannot be praised; its body is like empty space, without shore.”; “Never leaving this very place, always limpid; the moment you search, you know you cannot see it.” Never leaving this very place, always limpid; the moment you go searching, you know you will not see it. “Cannot be taken, cannot be rejected; in the ungraspable it is just so obtained.” It cannot be taken or rejected; in the very ungraspable, it is obtained just so. “Silent, it speaks; speaking, it is silent; the gate of great giving stands open, unblocked.”: in silence it is speaking, in speech it is silent; the gate of great giving stands open with nothing blocking it.

IX. Mahāprajñā and the Transmission of the Lamp

The fifteenth section is a question and an answer: “Someone asks me what school I understand; I answer: the power of mahāprajñā.” Someone asks what school I understand; the answer is the power of mahāprajñā. This is the song’s placing of itself: everything in it—the sword of wisdom, the jewel of the precepts, the mind-mirror, the wish-fulfilling jewel—is another name for the one dharma of prajñā. “Right or wrong, people do not recognize it; going against or going with, even heaven cannot fathom it.” Right or wrong, people do not recognize it; going against or going along, heaven itself cannot gauge it; “I have long since passed through many kalpas of cultivation; I am not idly deceiving you.” I have long cultivated through many kalpas, and am not here to deceive you idly. Then the banner and the lamp: “Raise the dharma-banner, establish the tenet; clearly, clearly, the Buddha’s decree is Caoxi.” Raising the dharma-banner and setting up the tenet; clearly what the Buddha decreed is Caoxi. “First Kāśyapa, the first to transmit the lamp; twenty-eight generations recorded in the western land.”; “The dharma flowed east into this land; Bodhidharma was the first patriarch.”; “Six generations passed down the robe, known to all under heaven; those after who gained the Way, how could they be counted?”: from Kāśyapa through twenty-eight generations in the west, Bodhidharma coming east as first patriarch, six generations passing down the robe, and those after who gained the Way beyond number.

The sixteenth section returns to true and deluded: “The true is not set up; the deluded is originally empty; being and nothing are both dismissed, and non-emptiness is emptied.” The true need not be set up, the deluded is empty from the start; being and nothing are both dismissed, and even “non-emptiness” is emptied. “The twenty gates of emptiness were never clung to; one nature, the Tathāgata, same in body of itself.” The twenty gates of emptiness were never clung to; one nature, the Tathāgata, same in body of itself. Then the second mirror simile in the song: “Mind is the faculty, dharma is the dust; the two are like marks on a mirror.” Mind is the faculty and dharma the dust; both are like marks on a mirror. “When marks and grime are wholly removed, the light at last appears; when mind and dharma are both forgotten, the nature is the true.”: when marks and grime are removed, the light appears; when mind and dharma are forgotten together, the nature is the true. What is removed is not only dharma; mind too is let go with it.

X. The Final Age, the Lion Cubs, the Perfect and Sudden

The seventeenth section turns to lament: “Alas, the final age of the dharma, an evil time; beings of thin merit are hard to tame.”; “Far from the sage, wrong views run deep; the demons are strong, the dharma weak, and harm is much to be feared.” Far from the sage, wrong views deep, demons strong and dharma weak. “Hearing the Tathāgata’s gate of sudden teaching, they wish they could wipe it out and smash it like a tile.” Hearing the Tathāgata’s sudden teaching, they wish they could smash it to pieces. To such people the song has one sentence: “The deed is in the mind, the calamity in the body; no need to complain, still less to blame others.” The deed is in the mind and the calamity in the body; no complaining, no blaming others; “If you would not bring on the karma of the uninterrupted hell, do not slander the Tathāgata’s wheel of right dharma.”.

The eighteenth section takes the lion as simile: “In the sandalwood forest there are no other trees; dense and deep, the lion dwells there.” In the sandalwood forest there are no other trees; thick and deep, the lion lives within; “In the quiet of the grove it roams alone; running beasts and flying birds all keep far away.”. “The lion cubs follow behind; at three years they can already roar.” The lion’s cubs follow behind, and at three years can roar aloud; “If a jackal chases the king of the dharma, a hundred-year-old goblin opens its mouth in vain.”: should a jackal chase the dharma-king, a goblin of a hundred years only gapes in vain. The lion cubs roar at three: the dharma is not weak; it is people who are.

The nineteenth section is the distinguishing of the perfect and sudden: “The perfect and sudden teaching has no room for human sentiment; where there is doubt unresolved, one must argue it straight out.” The perfect and sudden teaching makes no concession to feeling; where doubt is unresolved, one must argue it straight out; “It is not that this mountain monk flaunts self and other; it is that practice may fall into the pit of annihilation and permanence.” Not that I flaunt self and other, but that practice may fall into the pit of annihilation and permanence. “Wrong is wrong, right is right; off by a hair, astray by a thousand miles.”: wrong is wrong and right is right, each distinct; a hair’s breadth off and one is a thousand miles astray. “Right, and the dragon girl suddenly becomes a buddha; wrong, and Sunakṣatra sinks down alive.” Right, and it is the dragon girl suddenly becoming a buddha; wrong, and it is the monk Sunakṣatra sinking alive into the pit.

XI. Counting Sand in the Sea and Taking the Finger for the Moon

The twentieth section is self-account: “In my early years I piled up learning, and I too once searched the commentaries and hunted through sūtras and treatises.” In early years I piled up learning, searched the commentaries, hunted the sūtras and treatises; “Distinguishing names and marks without knowing when to stop, like entering the sea to count the sand, I only wore myself out.” Distinguishing names and marks without rest, like going into the sea to count sand, only exhausting myself. “And so I was bitterly rebuked by the Tathāgata: what gain in counting another’s treasures?”: only to be rebuked bitterly by the Tathāgata—what gain is there in counting someone else’s treasure? “All along stumbling, I came to feel it an empty journey; for many years I was in vain a traveler in the dust.” The song’s author walked this road himself.

The twenty-first section speaks of kinds of nature: “With a wrong seed-nature and mistaken understanding, they do not reach the Tathāgata’s perfect and sudden rule.” Wrong in seed-nature, mistaken in understanding, not reaching the Tathāgata’s perfect and sudden rule; “The two vehicles are diligent but without the mind of the Way; the outsiders are clever but without wisdom.” The two vehicles are diligent but without the mind of the Way; the outsiders are clever but without wisdom, “foolish, and childishly dull”. Where is the sickness? “On an empty fist and a pointing finger they produce an understanding of something real; taking the finger for the moon, they apply effort in vain.”: they take an empty fist and a pointing finger for something real, and take the finger for the moon, laboring to no end; “within faculties, objects, and dharmas they fabricate monsters out of nothing”. There is only one way out: “Not seeing a single dharma is the Tathāgata; only then may one be called the one who contemplates at ease.” Not seeing a single dharma is the Tathāgata, and only then is one called the one who contemplates at ease.

The twenty-second section speaks of karma: “Understood, the obstruction of karma is originally empty; not understood, one must still repay the old debts.” Understood, the obstruction of karma is empty from the start; not understood, old debts must be repaid. “Starving, one meets the king’s banquet and cannot eat; sick, one meets the king of physicians—how can one be cured?” Starving, one meets the royal banquet and cannot eat; sick, one meets the king of physicians—how can one be healed? “Practicing Chan amid desire is the power of knowledge and vision; a lotus born in fire is never destroyed.” Practicing Chan in the midst of desire rests on the power of knowledge and vision, like a lotus born in fire that never perishes. “Yongshi broke a grave precept, awakened to non-arising, and long ago became a buddha, who is here to this day.” The monk Yongshi broke a grave precept, awakened to non-arising, long ago became a buddha, and is here still.

XII. The Two Monks and the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel: Settling It for You

The twenty-third section is the second lion’s roar. “The lion’s roar, the fearless speech: deeply I sigh over the muddled, thick-hided ones.” Deeply sighing over the muddled and thick-hided; “They know only that breaking a grave precept obstructs bodhi, and do not see the secret key the Tathāgata opened.” They know only that breaking the grave precepts obstructs bodhi, and do not see the secret key the Tathāgata opened. Then the single story in the song: “There were two monks who committed lust and killing; Upāli’s firefly light only added to the knot of their sin.” Two monks committed lust and killing, and Upāli, with the firefly light of the precepts, only added to the knot of their sin; “The great layman Vimalakīrti removed their doubt at once, like the blazing sun melting frost and snow.” The layman Vimalakīrti removed their doubt at once, like the blazing sun melting frost. This is “the power of inconceivable liberation, whose wondrous use is as the Ganges sands, without limit.” For this dharma, says the song, “The four offerings—would I shrink from the labor? Ten thousand taels of gold could also be consumed.”; “To grind the bones and shatter the body would not suffice to repay; one phrase, clearly understood, surpasses a hundred billion.”: even grinding bone and shattering body would not repay it, and one phrase clearly understood surpasses a hundred billion. “The king among dharmas, highest and most excellent; Tathāgatas numberless as Ganges sand all bear witness together.”; “I now explain this wish-fulfilling jewel; all who receive it in faith accord with it.”: the wish-fulfilling jewel appears a third time, and this time it is “I now explain it”: I now speak it out, and all who receive it in faith accord with it.

The twenty-fourth section closes. “Clearly, clearly seeing, there is not one thing; there is no person and no buddha.” Seeing clearly, there is not one thing, no person, no buddha; “The great thousandfold worlds, as many as sand, are a bubble in the sea; all the sages and worthies are like a flash of lightning.” The great thousandfold world is a bubble on the sea, and all sages and worthies a flash of lightning. “Even if an iron wheel spun upon my head, concentration and wisdom, perfectly bright, would never be lost.”: even with an iron wheel turning on his head, concentration and wisdom perfectly bright are never lost. “The sun may turn cold and the moon hot, but the demons cannot destroy the true teaching.” The sun may grow cold and the moon hot; the demons cannot destroy this true teaching. “The elephant-carriage advances in grandeur along the road; who has seen a mantis block its wheel-track?” The elephant’s carriage advances in grandeur; who ever saw a mantis stop its track? “The great elephant does not roam the rabbit’s path; great awakening is not bound by small rules.” The great elephant does not take the rabbit’s path; great awakening is not bound by small rules. Last: “Do not take a view through a tube and slander the blue heavens; if you have not understood, I now settle it for you.”: do not slander the heavens with a view through a tube; you have not yet understood, and I now break it open for you. Here the song stops. Look back to the first line: that man of the Way at leisure who neither removes deluded thoughts nor seeks the true walked a whole road and said all this, and what he says at the end is still that one line—not one thing, no person, no buddha; so nothing to remove and nothing to seek.

Carrying Forward — The Commentary on the Song of Realizing the Way

This edition takes the Commentary on the Song of Realizing the Way, X63n1241, as its line-by-line mirror. Glossing the first line, the commentary divides “done with learning, practicing non-doing” into two layers: “‘Done with learning’ means done with worldly learning, and learning the learning of non-doing”, while the man of the Way at leisure is one “who accords with the Way and is not tied to the dust of toil; hence he is called at leisure”. Glossing “the real nature of ignorance is buddha-nature,” it says “this man of the Way, with the wisdom of prajñā, illumines ignorance through, and at once sees buddha-nature clear and clear”—in the same direction as the reading in the first section of this piece. Glossing “suddenly awakened to the dhyāna of the Tathāgata,” it says “the dhyāna of the Tathāgata is distinguished from four kinds of dhyāna”, listing the bodhisattva’s consciousness-only dhyāna, the śrāvaka’s one-sided-emptiness dhyāna, the dhyāna of human and heavenly cause and effect, and the dhyāna of outsiders’ divergent reckonings; and it says of the six pāramitās that they “are all within a single thought, complete from the start”. Glossing “in one leap enter straight into the ground of the Tathāgata,” it says “this one road, the thousand sages have never once trodden”. Glossing “someone asks me what school I understand,” it first glosses the two names mahā and prajñā, and then cites a transmitted passage, “prajñā is the guide on the paths of good and evil, the bright torch in the dark room of delusion”, returning the sword, the jewel, and the sweet dew one by one to prajñā. Glossing “mind is the faculty, dharma is the dust,” it says “though dharma can rule and hold all things, it is like a fine medicine: once the illness is cured, the medicine is of no use; hence dharma is dust”. Glossing the last line, it says “the unsurpassed prajñā receives only those of highest root and capacity; those of middling and lesser faculties can hardly take its impress”, and that “‘if you have not understood, I now settle it for you’—this one line, the whole great canon of teachings cannot lift”.

The preface at the head of the volume says of the song, “truly, that the western land calls it the Sūtra of Enlightenment is no false name”: a song, and yet called a sūtra—such was the weight the old masters gave it. This edition takes from the commentary only its line-by-line glosses, to light up the song’s meaning; it does not let the commentary stand in for the song. The commentator’s name is given differently at the head of the volume, in the preface title, and in the catalogue; this edition records all of them and judges none.

The song has an old line-by-line commentary; this edition takes the Commentary on the Song of Realizing the Way (X63n1241) as its mirror, and sets the commentary of Venerable Miaokong of Lingyan (X65n1292) beside it in parallel columns; the continuing verses of Fayuan of Nanming (X65n1291) go into the column of the old masters’ verses in the seventh topic. Fascicle thirty of the Record of the Transmission of the Lamp receives the full text and serves as the collation text; for its variant readings, see the tenth topic. For the nineteen Taishō collation notes, see the ninth topic.

I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement

The song has no doctrinal outline by the old masters. Both commentaries take up the song line by line and explain beneath each line, without setting up divisions. At the head of the fascicle the commentary explains the title:

「從緣悟入之謂證,千聖履踐之謂道,吟咏其道之」—“Entering by awakening through conditions is called realizing (證); what the thousand sages tread is called the Way (道); to chant that Way is”〔X63n1241 0260c20〕「謂歌,故曰證道歌也。」—“called a song (歌); hence it is called the Song of Realizing the Way (證道歌).”〔X63n1241 0260c21〕

Another explanation of the title, before the fascicle, tells why the song was composed:

以其所證」—“The patriarch kept him one night; at the time he was called the one-night awakening, and so he composed this song. Because what he had realized”〔X63n1241 0260b14〕「之道,述而書之,故謂證道謌也。」—“was the Way, he set it out and wrote it down; hence it is called the Song of Realizing the Way.”〔X63n1241 0260b15〕

Its place in the Record of the Transmission of the Lamp — fascicle thirty, titled 「永嘉真覺大師證道歌」—“Song of Realizing the Way of Great Master Zhenjue of Yongjia”〔T51n2076 0460a14〕, with no signature below the title; the text runs from 「君不見。 —“Have you not seen? The man of the Way at leisure, done with learning, practicing non-doing.”〔T51n2076 0460a15〕 to 「管見謗蒼蒼。 —“…a view through a tube to slander the blue heavens; if you have not understood, I now decide it for you.”〔T51n2076 0461b05〕.

II. Collation with the Alternate Translations

This song is a composition of the Chinese lands and has no alternate translation; the full text received in fascicle thirty of the Record of the Transmission of the Lamp serves as the collation text, and its variant readings are given in the tenth topic.

III. Scriptural and Treatise Grounding (the “eye”)

The song does not itself name the sūtras and treatises it relies on. Where the commentary, beneath a line, marks the sūtra relied on, it is listed verbatim below—all in the commentary’s own words; the original texts of the sūtras are not listed here, and this is not to say that the song must have come from them:

淨五眼得五力—“purify the five eyes, gain the five powers”〔T48 0395c23〕—the commentary marks the Vimalakīrti Sūtra:

所謂五眼者,一天」—“As discussed, this is found only in the Vimalakīrti Sūtra; let us explain it according to the text. The so-called five eyes are: first, the heavenly”〔X63n1241 0264b12〕「眼、二肉眼、三慧眼、四法眼、五佛眼也。」—“eye; second, the flesh eye; third, the wisdom eye; fourth, the dharma eye; fifth, the buddha eye.”〔X63n1241 0264b13〕

達者同遊涅槃路—“those who have arrived roam together on the road of nirvāṇa”〔T48 0395c25〕—the commentary cites a sūtra:

「經云:十方薄伽梵,一路」—“A sūtra says: The bhagavats of the ten directions—one road”〔X63n1241 0264c12〕「涅柈門。」—“the gate of nirvāṇa.”〔X63n1241 0264c13〕

我師得見然燈佛—“my teacher came to see Dīpaṃkara Buddha”〔T48 0396a12〕—the commentary relates the occasion of Dīpaṃkara’s prediction:

「所言然灯佛者,世尊因地為」—“As for what is called Dīpaṃkara Buddha: the World-Honored One, in his causal stage, was”〔X63n1241 0267c06〕「雪山童子,時值然灯如來出世,將五百金錢,親買」—“the youth of the Snow Mountains; at that time he met the Tathāgata Dīpaṃkara appearing in the world, and with five hundred gold coins personally bought”〔X63n1241 0267c07〕

頓入無生知見力—“enters at once the power of knowledge and vision of non-arising”〔T48 0396b02〕—the commentary cites the Great Prajñā Sūtra:

「大般若經云:甚深般若波羅蜜多,是」—“The Great Prajñā Sūtra says: The most profound prajñāpāramitā is”〔X63n1241 0270c09〕「諸佛母,能示世間諸法實相。」—“the mother of all buddhas, able to show the real mark of all dharmas of the world.”〔X63n1241 0270c10〕

二十空門元不著—“the twenty gates of emptiness were never clung to”〔T48 0396b21〕—the commentary cites the twenty emptinesses of the Great Prajñā Sūtra:

空空.」—“Hence the Great Prajñā Sūtra says: namely, inner emptiness, outer emptiness, inner-and-outer emptiness, the emptiness of emptiness,”〔X63n1241 0274c23〕

學人不了用修行—“students who do not understand use it to practice”〔T48 0396a29〕—the commentary raises the ten kinds of immortal-cultivators of the Śūraṅgama Sūtra:

「正在生死岸頭,如棱嚴十種修仙,」—“standing right on the bank of birth and death, like the ten kinds of immortal-cultivators in the Śūraṅgama,”〔X63n1241 0270b18〕

非則善星生陷墜—“right, and the dragon girl suddenly becomes a buddha; wrong, and Sunakṣatra sinks down alive”〔T48 0396c04〕—the commentary relates the two matters of the dragon girl and Sunakṣatra:

Points of rhetoric worth recording:

  1. Opening in three characters—「君不見」—“have you not seen”〔T48 0395c09〕 is the only three-character line in the whole song, and leads the whole piece.
  2. Reduplicated characters—「夢裏明明」—“in the dream, clearly, clearly”〔T48 0395c14〕, 「覺後空空」—“after waking, empty, empty”〔T48 0395c15〕, 「常坦坦」—“always calm and at ease”〔T48 0396a11〕, 「也閒閒」—“still unhurried and at leisure”〔T48 0396a12〕, 「生死悠悠」—“birth and death drift on and on”〔T48 0396a13〕, 「莽莽蕩蕩」—“reckless and vast”〔T48 0396a27〕, 「了了見」—“clearly and distinctly seeing”〔T48 0396c23〕.
  3. Paired statement and circling return—「常獨行常獨步」—“always walking alone, always striding alone”〔T48 0395c25〕; 「宗亦通」—“the source penetrated”〔T48 0396a05〕 「說亦通」—“the teaching penetrated too”〔T48 0396a06〕; 「行亦禪坐亦禪」—“walking is Chan, sitting is Chan”〔T48 0396a10〕; 「取不得捨不得」—“taking, it cannot be taken; rejecting, it cannot be rejected”〔T48 0396b13〕; 「默時說說時默」—“when silent, it is speaking; when speaking, it is silent”〔T48 0396b14〕; 「非不非是不是」—“wrong is wrong, right is right”〔T48 0396c03〕; 「日可冷月可熱」—“the sun may turn cold and the moon may turn hot”〔T48 0396c25〕.
無價珍用無盡」—“the Way: the heart hides a priceless treasure; this priceless treasure is used without end”〔T48 0395c28〕; 「我性同共如來合」—“my nature is joined together with the Tathāgata” takes up 「入我性」—“enters my nature”〔T48 0396b09〕; 「痕垢盡除」—“when marks and grime are wholly removed” takes up 「鏡上痕」—“marks on the mirror”〔T48 0396b23〕.
一法遍含一切法」—“one nature perfectly pervades all natures; one dharma everywhere holds all dharmas”〔T48 0396b07〕; 「一地具足一切地」—“one ground is complete with all grounds”〔T48 0396b09〕.
  6. Repetition earlier and later—「師子吼無畏說」—“the lion’s roar, the fearless speech” appears twice (〔T48 0396a07〕·〔T48 0396c16〕); 「如意珠」—“wish-fulfilling jewel” appears twice (〔T48 0396a20〕·〔T48 0396c22〕), and 「摩尼珠」—“maṇi jewel” once〔T48 0395c22〕, so the simile of the jewel occurs three times in all; 「定慧圓明」—“concentration and wisdom perfectly bright” appears twice (〔T48 0396a06〕·〔T48 0396c25〕); 「剎那滅却」—“in an instant extinguished” appears twice (〔T48 0395c12〕·〔T48 0396b10〕). This records only the repetition of the characters; no doctrinal judgment is made.

VIII. Citation and Carrying Forward

The Blue Cliff Record — in the commentary on Heshan’s instruction to the assembly, the song is cited to explain 「絕學」—“done with learning”:

—“Heshan, instructing the assembly, said: Practicing learning is called hearing; being done with learning is called nearness.”〔T48n2003 0181a02〕 「一宿覺道。 —“The One-Night Awakening said: ‘In my early years I piled up learning, and I too once searched the commentaries and hunted through sūtras and treatises.’ When practicing learning is exhausted, this is called ‘the man of the Way at leisure, done with learning, practicing non-doing.’”〔T48n2003 0181a05〕

The two places in the citation that agree with the song: 「吾早年來積學問。亦曾討疏尋經論」—“In my early years I piled up learning, and I too once searched the commentaries and hunted through sūtras and treatises” (segment 20 · 〔T48 0396c05〕) and 「絕學無為閒道人」—“the man of the Way at leisure, done with learning, practicing non-doing” (segment 1 · 〔T48 0395c09〕); the four characters 「習學既盡」—“when practicing learning is exhausted” are the words of the commentary, not the text of the song.

The Record of the Transmission of the Lamp — the whole text is received in fascicle thirty, titled 「永嘉真覺大師證道歌」—“Song of Realizing the Way of Great Master Zhenjue of Yongjia”〔T51n2076 0460a14〕.

Commentaries and verses — besides the two texts relied on in the fourth and fifth topics and the continuing verses of Fayuan in the seventh topic, the old commentaries and continuing verses on this song include one more text, whose head reads 「竺原禪師註證道歌序」—“Preface to Chan Master Zhuyuan’s Commentary on the Song of Realizing the Way”〔X65n1293 0456a03〕.

The following three places record further matters concerning the song or its author; only their locations are given here, and their text is not cited:

X. Verse Form and Variant Readings

① Line form: the song has two hundred and sixty-seven lines: two hundred and fourteen of seven characters, fifty-two of six characters, and one of three characters. The three-character line appears only once, in the opening 「君不見」—“have you not seen”〔T48 0395c09〕. The six-character lines are all two threes stacked together, as 「頓覺了如來禪」—“suddenly awakened to the dhyāna of the Tathāgata”〔T48 0395c14〕 and 「無罪福無損益」—“no sin and no merit, no loss and no gain”〔T48 0395c15〕; often a thought is begun with six-character lines and carried on with seven-character lines.

② Rhyme: the old masters have left no notes on the rhyme of this song; where the rhyme changes would have to be established by the study of ancient pronunciation, and that is not attempted here.

③ Collation notes of the 【甲】 witness: nineteen (including five CBETA emendations), each given in the ninth topic.

④ Variant readings of the collation text — reading the base text and the text of fascicle thirty of the Record of the Transmission of the Lamp character by character, the differences are as follows (recorded together, without adjudication):
