Dunlun
Commentator
The name Dunlun occurs in the Chinese canon only on the book he made. The eight biographies and catalogues were searched one by one in this session and the two characters do not appear once — no life, no native place, no teachers, no dates. Each of the forty-eight fascicles of the Record on the Yogācārabhūmi is headed "compiled by the monk Dunlun" 〔T42n1828 0311a05〕; beyond that, all the canon holds of him is one postscript.
That postscript was not written by a man of the Tang. Its signature reads "respectfully recorded by the śramaṇa Xingwei, mid-decade of the last month of summer, the guichou year of Kyōhō" 〔T42n1828 0868b04〕 — Kyōhō guichou is the eighteenth year of Kyōhō in Japan, a thousand years after the Tang. The writer calls him "the great worthy Dunlun of the Li Tang, who searched the Yoga to its depths and composed this record" 〔T42n1828 0868a20〕, and sets down what had become of the book: "copies of this work surviving in the world can be counted on the fingers" 〔T42n1828 0868a22〕, hidden in famous mountains and old temples and seldom seen; he begged leave to copy one out, and after long years the text had grown corrupt, until he obtained the Cixin canon copy, collated it three times over, and had it printed. Part of the road by which the Record on the Yogācārabhūmi reached the present ran that way.
This edition takes his Record as one of the commentarial mirrors on the Yogācārabhūmi, and of the man says only what is true: no life in the canon, dates unknown, teachers unrecorded. The postscript is an eighteenth-century printer's recollection; this edition records its words but does not date him by them, nor treat them as the testimony of a contemporary.
