"Huiyuan was of the surname Li, a man of Dunhuang, who afterwards dwelt at Gaodu in Shangdang" 〔T50n2060 0489c26〕 — this is Huiyuan of Jingying monastery, not Huiyuan of Mount Lu under the Eastern Jin; where Dunlun's Record on the Yogācārabhūmi in this corpus cites "Master Yuan" and "the old Master Yuan" it means this man, and this edition notes the distinction wherever the two names meet, never merging them. "At thirteen he took leave of his uncle and went to Guxian Valley monastery on the eastern hills of Zezhou" 〔T50n2060 0490a02〕, where the Chan master Sengsi of Huayin saw him and ordained him; at sixteen he went with the Vinaya master Zhan to Ye and ranged widely over the sūtras and treatises of both vehicles; at full age he took the complete precepts under the saṃgha-controller Shang, with the ten great disciples of Master Guang as witnesses. Where his learning came to rest is in the last line: "in the end he took the saṃgha-controller Shang as his sole master, keeping to him unbroken for seven years" 〔T50n2060 0490a17〕. Wide learning first, then one master, seven years without moving.

"Thus his name ran to the palace gates, and the sovereign heard of him" 〔T50n2060 0491a08〕, and an edict made him saṃgha-controller of Luozhou. In the fifth year of Kaihuang the prefect of Zezhou invited him to his native district; in the seventh a sealed letter pressed the invitation again and he could not decline, and so came to the western capital — where six great worthies were summoned by edict, and he was one. The sovereign, greatly pleased, ordered him to reside at Xingshan, and "a monastery was accordingly established there, named Jingying, where he constantly resided and lectured" 〔T50n2060 0491a26〕. The Commentary on the Larger Sukhāvatīvyūha 〔T37n1745〕 that this edition reads came out of the monastery built for him.

"In the spring of the twelfth year of Kaihuang an edict came down putting him in charge of translation, to settle and fix wording and sense" 〔T50n2060 0491b06〕 — and he died that same year: "in that year he died at Jingying monastery, in his seventieth year" 〔T50n2060 0491b07〕. Kaihuang 12 is 592, and the birth year 523 is reckoned back from it. The table of contents writes the monastery's name one way and the life another; both forms stand in the canon and this edition reproduces both without merging them — a difference of one character is also a fact of the base text.
