慧沼

「釋慧沼，不知何許人也」〔T50n2061 0728c02〕——與其師窺基之出身歷歷可考者不同，本傳於他闕如。所記者其學之所承：「自奘三藏到京，恒窺壼奧」〔T50n2061 0728c05〕，「後親大乘基師，更加精博」〔T50n2061 0728c05〕。奘師之門他及見，而其親事者是窺基——慈恩一線在他身上是第三代。

"Huizhao: no one knows where he came from" 〔T50n2061 0728c02〕 — unlike his teacher Kuiji, whose origins are recorded in full, the biography leaves his blank. What it records is where his learning came from: "from the Tripiṭaka master Xuanzang's arrival in the capital he plumbed the inner chamber of the teaching" 〔T50n2061 0728c05〕, and "later he studied under Master Dacheng Ji in person, and grew yet more exact and broad" 〔T50n2061 0728c05〕. He was alive for Xuanzang's gate, but the man he served in person was Kuiji — in him the Ci'en line stands in its third generation.

其行事見於譯場。菩提流志於崇福寺譯《大寶積經》，他預其選充證義，「新羅勝莊法師執筆」〔T50n2061 0728c07〕，同席者沙門大願、塵外皆一時英秀。其時中書侍郎崔湜因行香至翻經院，歎曰：「清流盡在此矣，豈應見隔」〔T50n2061 0728c11〕，因奏請乞同潤色新經——一個外朝之人請求入譯場，所歎者即此一席之人。

What he did stands in the record of the bureaus. When Bodhiruci translated the Ratnakūṭa at Chongfu monastery, Huizhao was among those chosen as verifier of meaning, with "the Silla master Sŭngjang holding the brush" 〔T50n2061 0728c07〕 and the śramaṇas Dayuan and Chenwai, the finest of that hour, beside him. At that time the vice-director of the Secretariat Cui Shi, coming to the translation cloister to offer incense, sighed: "The pure current is wholly here — how should one be kept outside?" 〔T50n2061 0728c11〕, and memorialised the throne asking to share in polishing the new scripture — an officer of the outer court petitioning to be let in, and it was that company he was sighing over.

本編所取其書二部：《金光明最勝王經疏》〔T39n1788〕與《勸發菩提心集》〔T45n1862〕；前者為本編金光明之主鏡。生卒之年本傳不繫，本編如實標不詳，不代為補。

Two of his works are taken up in this edition: the Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light 〔T39n1788〕 and the Collection Urging the Arising of the Mind of Awakening 〔T45n1862〕, the former being this edition's principal mirror on the Golden Light. His dates the biography does not give, and this edition marks them honestly as unknown rather than supplying them.
