憬興

Jingxing

Commentator

Of Jingxing the canon holds only three scroll-head titles. The three fascicles of the Exposition and Encomium on the Connected Meaning of the Larger Sukhāvatīvyūha are each headed "composed by the monk Jingxing" 〔T37n1748 0131c06〕〔T37n1748 0143a08〕〔T37n1748 0158a14〕, and the Taishō catalogue enters him as "Jingxing of Silla." The eight biographies and catalogues were searched one by one in this session and carry no life of him — the particulars of his home, his teachers and his dates the canon nowhere gives.

His name stands in two forms: the canon's own attribution writes it one way, while this corpus's reader-facing pages use the current form. This session re-checked the book itself: throughout, it uses only the canonical form, and the current form does not occur once. The two forms name one man; this registry enters him under the current form for convenience and reproduces the scroll-head form verbatim in the dating note, altering not one character of the scroll-head — convenience in naming may not change a character of the base text, which is this edition's standing rule.

This edition takes his encomium as one of the commentarial mirrors on the Larger Sukhāvatīvyūha, beside Tanluan and Huiyuan of Jingying, recording where the houses differ without adjudicating; of the man himself it marks the record honestly as unknown and supplies nothing.
