"Kuiji, styled Hongdao, was of the surname Yuchi, a man of Chang'an in the capital region" 〔T50n2061 0725b18〕. His father, named Zong, was a general of the Left Golden-Bird Guard; Lord E of Yuchi stood among his father's brothers — a military house, though it was not lineage that brought him into the Dharma: "when he entered the Dharma he was made, by imperial edict, a disciple of the master Xuanzang, and first resided at Guangfu monastery" 〔T50n2061 0725c10〕, and a further edict soon selected him for Great Ci'en monastery, where "he served Xuanzang in person and learned the language of the five regions of India, untangling knots and ordering the whole clearly" 〔T50n2061 0725c12〕. "At twenty-five he answered the imperial summons to translate scriptures, and lectured through more than thirty works of the Great and Small Vehicles" 〔T50n2061 0725c14〕.

The bureau that produced the Treatise on Consciousness-only, which this edition works from, took its shape from a change of arrangement. The biography records that for the treatise Xuanzang translated he "at first received it together with Fang, Shang and Guang, the four of them polishing, holding the brush, checking the text and compiling the sense" 〔T50n2061 0725c17〕 — four men and four tasks; and then "Xuanzang consented: on the reasoning given he released the three worthies and entrusted the work to Ji alone — an appointment measured to the man" 〔T50n2061 0725c22〕. Ten masters' expositions were blended into one treatise under one hand, and the Cheng weishi lun this edition reads is the fruit of that ruling; so too is the standing of his述記 as this edition's first Yogācāra mirror. Nine of his commentaries enter this edition, from the Lotus and the Heart Sūtra and the Vimalakīrti through to the Madhyāntavibhāga and the Essay on the Forest of Meanings — "known as the Master of a Hundred Treatises" 〔T49n2035 0369b17〕 was no empty compliment.

On the thirteenth day of the eleventh month of the first year of Yongchun he passed away in the translation cloister of Ci'en monastery, "in his fifty-first year" 〔T50n2061 0726b03〕; the birth year 632 is reckoned back from that and is not a figure the life states outright. The same life adds that "his ordination-years went unheard of" 〔T50n2061 0726b03〕 — the count of his years in robes the biography does not have, and this edition leaves the gap where it found it. He was buried at the north channel of Fan village, "laid beside the grave-mound of the Tripiṭaka master Xuanzang" 〔T50n2061 0726b04〕: the evidence for the two men standing next to each other in this registry is that one line.
