Mandra

Translator

Mandra has no separate biography in the canon; the Continued Lives of Eminent Monks attaches his name to the life of Saṅghapāla. Only two things are recorded: the man, and the Sanskrit texts he brought. The Kaiyuan Catalogue records the man: "The śramaṇa Mandra — in Liang speech 'Soft Voice,' also 'Broadly Yielding' — a man of the kingdom of Funan" 〔T55n2154 0537b10〕, and praises his quality: "In spiritual understanding he awoke beyond, seeing through the hidden and the manifest entire; undaunted by ease or hardship, his will was set on opening and transforming" 〔T55n2154 0537b11〕. The Chinese rendering of his name, "Soft Voice," glosses the Sanskrit sound rather than a meaning; this edition keeps the Chinese transcription 曼陀羅仙 in the text and does not replace it with a later Sanskrit form.

The year of his entry into Liang and what he carried are recorded in the Record of the Three Treasures through the Ages: "In the first years of the Tianjian era, the śramaṇa Mandra of the kingdom of Funan — in Liang speech 'Soft Voice' — brought a great quantity of Sanskrit scriptural texts as tribute" 〔T49n2034 0098b05〕. The Mañjuśrī Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra rendered in this edition comes from his work of translation. His dates the canon does not give, and this edition marks them honestly as unknown rather than supplying them.
