青目

Qingmu

Commentator

The canon contains no biography of Qingmu. His name, his country, and his hand appear in one place only, in Sengrui's preface to the Middle Treatise: "What is here brought forth is the explanation of an Indian brahmin named Piṅgala, in Qin speech 'Blue Eyes'" 〔T30n1564 0001a27〕. Qingmu is the Chinese rendering, Piṅgala the Sanskrit sound; this edition keeps both, using Qingmu in the text and recording Piṅgala as the alternate. The chapter heading agrees with the preface: "composed by the bodhisattva Nāgārjuna, explained by the brahmin Qingmu" 〔T30n1564 0001b12〕.

In the same preface Sengrui passes an unflattering judgment on the explanation, which this edition records without softening: "Though the man understood the deep Dharma in faith, his wording was not elegantly apt" 〔T30n1564 0001a28〕; "where it was defective or redundant the Master pruned and supplemented throughout" 〔T30n1564 0001a28〕 — Kumārajīva cut and filled where he found it wanting. That sentence bears heavily on the Middle Treatise in this edition: the Chinese prose commentary the reader has in hand is Qingmu's explanation as pruned and supplemented by Kumārajīva, not Qingmu entire. This edition keeps to the wording of the received text wherever the prose is cited, neither restoring an original on his behalf nor disparaging his explanation on that account.

Of his dates, his teachers, and his acts the Chinese record says nothing at all. This edition marks them honestly as unknown rather than supplying them; the century in this entry serves ordering only.
