神泰

Shentai

Commentator

Shentai has no life of his own in the canon. His name appears in two lists in the Life of the Tripiṭaka Master of Great Ci'en Monastery. The first is at the opening of the translation bureau at Hongfu monastery in the nineteenth year of Zhenguan: "the twelve eminent monks chosen to certify the meaning — those versed in the sūtras and treatises of both Vehicles and esteemed by their generation" 〔T50n2053 0253c19〕 arrived, and one of them was "Shentai of Pujiu monastery in Puzhou" 〔T50n2053 0253c25〕. One of twelve, and nothing further said.

The second is at the translation of the Great Vibhāṣā: Shentai, Jingmai, Mingjue and the others, "clear in insight, complete in resolve and learning, widely read in the scriptures and deeply understanding" 〔T50n2053 0262c24〕, were each summoned by special decree to the Dharma assembly, where "seated at arm's length they questioned the master and received his intent with the scroll in hand" 〔T50n2053 0262c25〕; and afterwards "each recorded what he had heard and composed expositions of it" 〔T50n2053 0262c27〕. The Kośa Commentary 〔X53n0836〕 this edition draws on survives in Chinese in seven fascicles only — the remnant of that recording of what was heard. This edition uses it not for its completeness but for its nearness: what stands in it was received in the hall itself.

The canon gives no dates and records no origin; of his teacher only that one occasion can be established. This edition marks these honestly as unknown rather than supplying them.
