"Zhikai, of lay surname Cao, resided at a monastery in Yangdu" 〔T50n2060 0431b02〕. He has no life of his own; what is known stands appended to Fatai's in the Further Biographies. With Fatai and the others, setting out at different times, he went to the far south to seek out Paramārtha — and it is on this company of men who travelled from Yangdu that the southern portion of Paramārtha's translating, which this edition reads, depended.
His office was to take the text down, and his merit lay in speed and completeness: "they then rendered the Mahāyānasaṃgraha in turn, he receiving the text from the master's own mouth; within seven months both text and commentary were finished, twenty-five fascicles in all" 〔T50n2060 0431b04〕. "Afterwards they rendered the Abhidharmakośa in turn; in ten months it was done, text and commentary together numbering eighty-three fascicles" 〔T50n2060 0431b06〕. Paramārtha had a word for it: "had I met you sooner, the sūtras and treatises compiled in my earlier translations would want nothing. Now that these two treatises are rendered complete in wording and sense, I have no regret" 〔T50n2060 0431b07〕 — the translator naming the deficiency of his own earlier work and saying this man had repaired it. That the texts this edition draws on are "complete in wording and sense" rests half on him.
His end came in the lecturer's seat: "lecturing on the Kośa he had reached the ninth fascicle of the commentary on the chapter on karma, and the text was not yet done" 〔T50n2060 0431b14〕. On the twentieth day of the eighth month he fell ill and knew he would not recover; he called for paper and wrote a poem, and then, laying down the brush, "he clasped hands in farewell with the assembled worthies, sat upright in composed thought, and quietly died, in his fifty-first year — the second year of Guangda" 〔T50n2060 0431b20〕. Guangda 2 is 568, and the birth year 518 is reckoned back from that. "At Zhikai's death, Paramārtha beat his breast in grief" 〔T50n2060 0431c10〕. One piece of his writing is taken up in this edition: the Preface to the Awakening of Faith 〔T32n1666〕, headed in his own hand "written by the monk Zhikai of Yangzhou" — the biography sometimes gives his name as Huikai, and this file takes its form from the scroll-head, recording both without adjudicating.
