The Light Does Not Shine in Only One Direction
Ānanda faces west and bows to the Buddha. He asks to see the Buddha, the land, and the community of practitioners together. When the light shines, the distant is no longer only distant: those here see those there, and those there also see those here. With a single sentence the sūtra turns one-sided gazing into encounter: “The four groups in this assembly all saw at once, and those in that land saw this land in the same way.”
Seeing and being seen take place within the same light. The adornment of that land is therefore not a sealed world. It allows assemblies separated by immeasurable lands to become present to one another.
Even within a Palace, Encounter May Be Absent
Another kind of person has already been born in the land of Peace and Bliss and dwells in a vast residence where every provision appears of its own accord. Yet for five hundred years such a person “regularly cannot see the Buddha, hear the scriptural Dharma, or see the sacred assembly of bodhisattvas and śrāvakas.” This is not geographical distance. Even within the same land, there remains a difference between seeing and not seeing, hearing and not hearing.
The sūtra places the cause in doubt concerning Buddha-wisdom. Roots of goodness still bring birth there, while the net of doubt temporarily prevents entry into the shared life of the Buddha, Dharma, and sacred assembly. The most magnificent palace can therefore become an inward boundary.
The Golden Chain Is Not Concealed within Punishment
The simile of the princes first provides food, clothing, bedding, flowers, incense, and music in full, then asks whether they enjoy being kept in the palace. In its application, the Buddha says with special clarity: “They take this as suffering; although they have other pleasures, they do not enjoy remaining there.” What makes them unhappy is not a hidden torment, but the inability to see the Three Jewels, make offerings, and cultivate goodness.
The golden chain is so light that it does not obstruct enjoyment. It is also so heavy that it prevents the road of awakening from opening. The sūtra thereby gives freedom another measure: it asks not only how much one possesses, but whether the heart remains connected with the Buddha-Dharma.
When a Single Thought Turns Back, the Gate Is No Longer Closed
The point at which those who doubted turn back is stated plainly: “If these sentient beings recognize their original fault, deeply take themselves to task, and seek to leave that place.” No other key is sent from outside. The place where doubt is recognized is precisely where trust can arise again.
When the gate opens, what is gained is more than one sight of the Buddha. They can also travel throughout the places of immeasurable buddhas and cultivate merit. The story suddenly widens from one palace to the ten directions, and from one person who once doubted to innumerable non-retrogressive bodhisattvas being born there together.
A Summary, Precisely Because the World Cannot Be Exhausted in Words
At the end, the Buddha names land after land, yet does not let the numbers become a boundary: “In the immeasurable buddha-lands throughout the worlds of the ten directions, those born there are likewise exceedingly numerous and without number.” Every land named is real; those left unnamed have not thereby been excluded.
This passage begins with Ānanda’s wish to see and ends with what cannot be fully told in an entire kalpa. At first there is only a pair of joined palms, yet within the light the two sides open to one another. At first there is only one palace, yet after remorse the road extends to immeasurable buddhas. Within seeing is a deeper seeing: not simply that there is light before the eyes, but that no gate remains closed between sentient beings and the Buddha-Dharma.

Taishō T12n0360, from the Buddha’s instruction that Ānanda bow to the Buddha of Measureless Life through the summary of the bodhisattvas from the ten directions who will be born there. The figures at the head of each segment give the Taishō page, register, and line.
〔一 · Ānanda Bows to the Buddha and Asks to See〕(0277c26)The Buddha told Ānanda: rise and arrange your robes once more. Join your palms respectfully and bow to the Buddha of Measureless Life. The buddha-tathāgatas throughout the lands of the ten directions constantly join in proclaiming and praising that Buddha without obstruction or impediment.
Ānanda rose and arranged his robes, straightened his body, and faced west. Joining his palms respectfully, he placed both knees, both elbows, and his forehead upon the ground and bowed to the Buddha of Measureless Life. He then addressed the Buddha: World-Honored One, I wish to see that Buddha, the land of Peace and Bliss, and the assemblies of bodhisattvas and śrāvakas there.
〔二 · The Buddha’s Light Shines Everywhere, and the Two Lands See One Another〕(0278a02)As soon as Ānanda had spoken, the Buddha of Measureless Life emitted great light that universally illuminated all buddha-worlds. The adamantine encircling mountains, Mount Sumeru, and every mountain large and small were all suffused with a single color of light.
It was like the flood at the end of a kalpa filling the world: all things sank beneath it and were no longer visible, and over the vast, surging expanse only the great waters could be seen. The light of the Buddha of Measureless Life was the same. All the light of the śrāvakas and bodhisattvas disappeared within it, and only the Buddha’s light remained, brilliant, manifest, and resplendent.
At that moment Ānanda personally saw the Buddha of Measureless Life. The Buddha’s majestic virtue towered like Mount Sumeru, rising high above all worlds; his excellent marks and light illuminated everything. All four groups in this Dharma assembly, monastic and lay alike, saw him at the same time. The assembly in the land of Peace and Bliss saw this land just as those here saw that land.
〔三 · The Buddha Asks What Has Been Seen and Heard〕(0278a11)The Buddha then asked Ānanda and Maitreya Bodhisattva: have you seen everything in that land from the ground upward to the Heaven of the Pure Abodes—all the subtle, adorned, pure things that appear there of their own accord? Ānanda answered: yes, we have seen them all.
The Buddha asked: have you also heard the Buddha of Measureless Life proclaiming the Dharma in a great voice throughout all worlds and teaching sentient beings? Ānanda answered: yes, we have heard him.
The Buddha asked further: have you seen the people of that land riding in palaces made of the seven precious substances, hundreds of thousands of yojanas in extent, traveling without obstruction throughout the ten directions to make offerings to the buddhas? Ānanda answered: we have seen them.
The Buddha asked: have you also seen that some among the people of that land undergo womb-birth? Ānanda answered: we have seen them.
The Buddha said that the palaces inhabited by those of womb-birth extend in some cases for one hundred yojanas and in others for five hundred. Within them, they enjoy every kind of pleasure, just as in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, and everything they use appears of its own accord.
〔四 · The Causes and Conditions of Womb- and Transformation-Birth〕(0278a20)Maitreya Bodhisattva then asked the Buddha: World-Honored One, for what causes and conditions do the people of that land undergo womb-birth and transformation-birth?
The Buddha told Maitreya: some sentient beings cultivate many kinds of merit with a mind of doubt and wish to be born in that land. They do not understand Buddha-wisdom, inconceivable wisdom, ineffable wisdom, the vast wisdom of the Great Vehicle, or the unsurpassed supreme wisdom without peer or equal. They doubt these kinds of wisdom and cannot trust them. Yet they still trust the causal relation of wrongdoing and merit, cultivate roots of goodness, and aspire to birth in the land of the Buddha of Measureless Life.
These sentient beings are born in palaces in that land. For five hundred years they regularly cannot see the Buddha, hear the scriptural Dharma, or see the sacred assembly of bodhisattvas and śrāvakas. For this reason, they are called those of womb-birth in that land.
Other sentient beings clearly understand and trust Buddha-wisdom through the unsurpassed supreme wisdom. They perform many kinds of meritorious deeds and, with trust, dedicate and direct the merit toward birth in that land. These sentient beings naturally undergo transformation-birth within lotus flowers made of the seven precious substances, seated cross-legged. In only a brief moment, their bodily marks, light, wisdom, and merit become fully accomplished like those of the bodhisattvas.
〔五 · The Excellence of Wisdom and the Loss Brought by Doubt〕(0278b03)The Buddha further told Maitreya: many great bodhisattvas from other lands give rise to the aspiration to see the Buddha of Measureless Life, respectfully make offerings to that Buddha, and make offerings to the bodhisattvas and śrāvakas there. At the end of their lives, those bodhisattvas are born in the land of the Buddha of Measureless Life and naturally undergo transformation-birth within lotus flowers made of the seven precious substances.
Maitreya, you should know that those who undergo transformation-birth do so because their wisdom is excellent. Those of womb-birth lack wisdom. For five hundred years they regularly cannot see the Buddha, hear the scriptural Dharma, or see the assemblies of bodhisattvas and śrāvakas. They have no opportunity to make offerings to the Buddha, do not know the modes of bodhisattva practice, and cannot continue cultivating merit. You should know that these people lacked wisdom in former lives. This is the result of doubt.
〔六 · The Simile of Princes Confined in a Palace〕(0278b12)The Buddha told Maitreya: suppose a wheel-turning sage-king had a separate palace adorned with the seven precious substances. Within it were beds and canopies, while banners of silk hung all around.
If young princes offended the king, he would have them placed inside that palace and bound with golden chains. Food, clothing, bedding, flowers, incense, and music would all be supplied in full. Their provisions would lack nothing in comparison with those of the wheel-turning king himself. What do you think? Would those princes enjoy remaining there?
Maitreya answered: no. They would seek help from people of great power and try by every means to free themselves and leave.
〔七 · Recognizing the Fault, Deeply Taking Oneself to Task, and Reopening Sight and Hearing〕(0278b18)The Buddha told Maitreya: these sentient beings are the same. Because they doubted Buddha-wisdom, they were born in those palaces. There is no punishment there, not even a single thought of evil. But for five hundred years they cannot see the Three Jewels—the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha—make offerings, or cultivate roots of goodness. They take this as suffering; although they have other pleasures, they do not enjoy remaining there.
If these sentient beings recognize their original fault, deeply take themselves to task, and seek to leave that place, their wish will at once be fulfilled. They can go before the Buddha of Measureless Life and respectfully make offerings. They can also travel universally to the places of immeasurable, innumerable tathāgatas and cultivate many kinds of merit.
Maitreya, you should know that if bodhisattvas give rise to doubt about Buddha-wisdom, they lose great benefit. They should therefore clearly understand and trust the unsurpassed wisdom of the buddhas.
〔八 · Bodhisattvas from the Sahā World Who Will Be Born There〕(0278b27)Maitreya Bodhisattva then asked the Buddha: World-Honored One, how many non-retrogressive bodhisattvas from this world will be born in that buddha-land?
The Buddha told Maitreya: sixty-seven koṭis of non-retrogressive bodhisattvas from this world will be born in that land. Every one of them has already made offerings to innumerable buddhas and stands at a stage comparable to yours. Bodhisattvas of lesser practice and those who have cultivated only a little merit are beyond counting; they too will all be born there.
〔九 · Numbers of Bodhisattvas from Thirteen Other Buddha-Lands〕(0278c04)The Buddha further told Maitreya: not only the bodhisattvas and others from my land will be born in that buddha-land. The same is true of other buddha-lands.
The first buddha is named Far-Shining. One hundred and eighty koṭis of bodhisattvas from that buddha’s land will all be born there. The second buddha is named Jewel Treasury. Ninety koṭis of bodhisattvas from that land will all be born there. The third buddha is named Measureless Sound. Two hundred and twenty koṭis of bodhisattvas from that land will all be born there. The fourth buddha is named Nectar Flavor. Two hundred and fifty koṭis of bodhisattvas from that land will all be born there.
The fifth buddha is named Dragon Victory. Fourteen koṭis of bodhisattvas from that land will all be born there. The sixth buddha is named Victorious Power. Fourteen thousand bodhisattvas from that land will all be born there. The seventh buddha is named Lion. Five hundred koṭis of bodhisattvas from that land will all be born there. The eighth buddha is named Light Free from Defilement. Eighty koṭis of bodhisattvas from that land will all be born there.
The ninth buddha is named Foremost Virtue. Sixty koṭis of bodhisattvas from that land will all be born there. The tenth buddha is named Mountain of Wondrous Virtue. Sixty koṭis of bodhisattvas from that land will all be born there. The eleventh buddha is named King of Humans. Ten koṭis of bodhisattvas from that land will all be born there.
The twelfth buddha is named Unsurpassed Flower. An immeasurable and incalculable assembly of bodhisattvas lives in that land. All of them have attained non-retrogression, are courageous in wisdom, and have already made offerings to immeasurable buddhas. Within seven days they can embrace the steadfast Dharma cultivated by great beings over hundreds of thousands of koṭis of kalpas. These bodhisattvas will all be born there.
The thirteenth buddha is named Fearless. That buddha’s land has seven hundred and ninety koṭis of great bodhisattvas. Its lesser bodhisattvas, bhikṣus, and other members of the assembly are beyond counting; they too will all be born there.
〔十 · Birth There throughout the Ten Directions Cannot Be Fully Told〕(0278c25)The Buddha told Maitreya: it is not only the bodhisattvas and others from these fourteen buddha-lands who will be born there. In the immeasurable buddha-lands throughout the worlds of the ten directions, those born in the land of the Buddha of Measureless Life are likewise exceedingly numerous and without number.
If I were only to state the names of the buddhas throughout the ten directions and enumerate the bodhisattvas and bhikṣus from those lands who will be born in the land of the Buddha of Measureless Life, I could continue day and night for an entire kalpa and still not finish. What I have now given you is only a brief account.
This teaching follows the passage-by-passage sequence of Jingxing’s Linked-Meaning Exposition and Praise, reads it alongside Huiyuan’s Commentary on the Meaning as it gathers the gains and losses of womb- and transformation-birth, and then uses the pure flower, ocean of wisdom, and power of the original vow in Tanluan’s Commentary on the Treatise on Birth in That Land to illuminate the passage at depth. These three ancient mirrors do not say the same thing in every respect, nor do they render another judgment in place of the sūtra. Together they help us see that the true question here is not whether the land contains pleasure. It is whether, while dwelling in pleasure, one can see the Buddha, hear the Dharma, draw near to the sacred assembly, and continue opening toward awakening.
Is Seeing the Land the Sight of a Scene, or Entry into a Relationship?
The Buddha does not simply display the land of Peace and Bliss before the assembly. He first tells Ānanda to arrange his robes, join his palms, and bow respectfully to the Buddha. Ānanda follows the instruction, straightens his body, faces west, and makes a full prostration. Only then does he express his wish: “I wish to see that Buddha, the land of Peace and Bliss, and the assemblies of bodhisattvas and śrāvakas.” What he seeks is not only a tract of land or the form of one buddha. Buddha, land, and community of practice are all included within the wish to see.
This order means that seeing is not merely a marvelous scene suddenly appearing before the eyes. Before it stand the praise offered by the buddhas throughout the ten directions and a respectful request. Afterward come the Buddha’s questions to Ānanda and Maitreya. A buddha-land is not an adorned picture to contemplate from a distance; it is the place where a buddha teaches, a sacred community dwells, and sentient beings can hear and practice. Bowing to the Buddha first makes seeing the land an open relationship with one who is awake.
When the Buddha of Measureless Life emits light, the four groups in this assembly see that land, and those in that land see this one. This sentence is decisive. The Sahā world does not gaze in only one direction toward a distant pure realm. The two lands become present to one another. Distance remains, but the light of the Buddha opens the isolation. Those who wished to see also know that they are not standing in a darkness that can never itself be seen.
If Everything Becomes One Color, Has Everything Else Disappeared?
The light shines throughout the buddha-worlds. The adamantine encircling mountains, Mount Sumeru, and the mountains large and small all become one color. The sūtra uses the flood at the end of a kalpa as its simile: when waters fill the world, every object sinks from sight and only the vast water remains. The Buddha’s light is the same. The light of the śrāvakas and bodhisattvas disappears, and only the Buddha’s radiance shines visibly.
If we stop at the word disappears, we may imagine that the Buddha’s light erases every other being. Yet the sūtra immediately says that Ānanda sees the Buddha of Measureless Life, sees his marks and light, and that the four groups of this assembly and the assemblies of the two lands see one another. The light does not render sentient beings invisible. It allows everything to be seen anew within the Buddha’s virtue. Lesser lights no longer contend separately for brightness, and the whole assembly instead enters visibility together.
The Buddha’s body is then compared to Mount Sumeru: “His majestic virtue towered like Mount Sumeru, rising high above all worlds.” The flood simile says that the light is all-pervading; the mountain simile says that the Buddha’s virtue rises above all. One spreads wide and one stands high, together establishing the center of what Ānanda wished to see. The world has not been canceled; a scattered gaze has finally acquired a shared direction.
If a Palace Is Filled with Pleasure, Why Does the Sūtra Still Find a Loss There?
After the land has appeared, the Buddha asks a series of questions. Ānanda first confirms that he has seen the subtle, adorned, pure things from the ground through the Heaven of the Pure Abodes. He confirms that he has heard the Buddha’s great voice teaching throughout the worlds and seen the people of that land travel in palaces made of the seven precious substances without obstruction to make offerings throughout the ten directions. The first three questions concern virtues. Only in the fourth does the Buddha ask whether he has seen people of womb-birth, and Ānanda again says that he has.
Their palaces extend for one hundred or five hundred yojanas. All provisions appear of their own accord, and the pleasure is like that of the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. The sūtra deliberately makes the pleasure complete before asking what is absent from it. If suffering meant nothing but material lack, there would be no fault to find with these palaces. If pleasure were measured only by possessions and use, there would be no reason to distinguish womb- from transformation-birth. The measure given by the sūtra is different: whether sentient beings can directly see the awakened one, hear the scriptural Dharma, draw near to the bodhisattvas and śrāvakas, make offerings, and continue cultivating roots of goodness.
The passage does not demean the effortless pleasures of that land. It refuses to make them the final measure. One may have a dwelling, provisions, and long life and still remain temporarily outside the common life of the Buddha-Dharma. Peace and bliss separated from the road of awakening have not yet become the great benefit that this sūtra discloses.
Doubt Does Not Prevent Birth There—What Does It Temporarily Close?
When Maitreya asks the causes of womb- and transformation-birth, the Buddha begins with those who doubt. They are not devoid of roots of goodness. They still trust the causality of wrongdoing and merit, cultivate good roots, and wish to be born in that land. The sūtra does not say that doubt prevents them from attaining birth. It says they are born in palaces where, for five hundred years, they regularly cannot see the Buddha, hear the Dharma, or see the sacred assembly of bodhisattvas and śrāvakas; for that reason they are called those of womb-birth.
The distinction is exceedingly fine. Doubt does not turn all their preceding good practices into nothing, and their wholesome aspiration does not render doubt entirely without consequence. Birth there shows that the roots of goodness and the aspiration for birth did not come to nothing. The long absence of sight and hearing shows that the net of doubt really changes what they can receive. The sūtra neither casts those who doubt out of the land nor declares that doubt makes no difference.
It names Buddha-wisdom, inconceivable wisdom, ineffable wisdom, the vast wisdom of the Great Vehicle, and the unsurpassed supreme wisdom without peer or equal. Ancient readers offer close explanations of these five names, while the contrast drawn by the sūtra itself remains plain: on one side are failure to understand, doubt, and disbelief; on the other is “clearly understanding and trusting Buddha-wisdom through the supreme wisdom.” The question is not whether a person can exhaust Buddha-wisdom conceptually. It is whether, because that wisdom cannot be exhausted conceptually, the person rejects trust in the Buddha’s original vow and embracing activity.
The ancient explanations preserve more than one way of reading the five. One reading first maintains a general and particular relation: Buddha-wisdom is the general term, while the remaining four names respectively reveal its depth beyond measurement, its abundance beyond expression, its exhaustive knowledge of the Dharma gates, and its superior station beyond comparison. Another maps the five names respectively to the pure dharma-realm, great mirror wisdom, equality wisdom, discerning wisdom, and the wisdom that accomplishes what is to be done. It thereby differentiates doubts about whether the original vow can embrace beings, whether recollection of the Buddha can remove obstacles, whether Buddha-wisdom can be expressed, how wisdom and compassion carry sentient beings, and whether the Tathāgata’s supreme activity extends everywhere. These are two modes of ancient interpretation, not five competing roads established by the sūtra. The sūtra itself retains the contrast between doubt and clear trust and the different conditions for seeing, hearing, and practice that follow from them.
Clear trust is still joined with the performance of meritorious deeds and the dedication and direction of merit. It is not a verbal profession replacing practice. Those who clearly trust undergo transformation-birth within lotus flowers made of the seven precious substances, and in a brief moment their bodily marks, light, wisdom, and merit become complete. Doubt and trust are not isolated thoughts here. Each is connected with roots of goodness, dedication, sight and hearing, and the conditions of practice after birth there.
If Both Arise within a Flower, Where Does the Distinction between Womb and Transformation Lie?
The sūtra further says that great bodhisattvas from other lands aspire to see the Buddha of Measureless Life and make offerings to that Buddha and the bodhisattva and śrāvaka assemblies. At the end of their lives, they too are naturally born through transformation within lotus flowers made of the seven precious substances. Only then does the text draw the contrast: those of transformation-birth possess excellent wisdom, while those of womb-birth, through former lack of wisdom and doubt, spend five hundred years without the conditions for seeing the Buddha, hearing the Dharma, making offerings, or learning the modes of bodhisattva practice.
The word womb is therefore not a biological account of how a body originates. It is a figurative name for a state of enclosure. Alternate translations even say explicitly that those who doubt remain within the lotus and do not appear for a long time, while ancient line-by-line explanations say that the condition is like womb-birth. Transformation-birth is likewise more than suddenly acquiring a body. It means arising open to Buddha, Dharma, and sacred community, so that wisdom and merit can continue to grow.
A later treatise commentary calls the assembly in that land the community born from the pure flower of perfect awakening and says that it arises from the Tathāgata’s pure ocean of wisdom. Flower and ocean do not add new marvels to the scene. The flower shows shared entry into a pure spiritual family; the ocean shows the depth and breadth of Buddha-wisdom that can embrace the assembly. Together they reveal that true transformation-birth changes not only the place of birth, but one’s participation in the seeing, hearing, and practice of a shared buddha-path.
Beyond the Golden Chain, What Constitutes the Real Confinement?
The Buddha gives the simile of the wheel-turning king’s sons. Young princes offend the king and are placed in a palace adorned with the seven precious substances. Beds, canopies, food, clothing, flowers, incense, and music are all provided without deficiency, but their legs are bound with golden chains. When the Buddha asks whether they enjoy that place, Maitreya answers that they do not. They seek people of great power and every means by which they may free themselves and leave.
In applying the simile, the sūtra immediately excludes an interpretation based on terror: “There is no punishment there, not even one thought of evil.” Those of womb-birth do not undergo torture, nor is another form of torment concealed in the palace. The only suffering expressly named is that for five hundred years they cannot see the Three Jewels, make offerings, or cultivate roots of goodness. The golden chain represents precisely this invisible separation.
We thus understand that the sūtra does not measure freedom only by the quantity of pleasure a person can enjoy. The princes have provisions like the king’s and still cannot go where they wish. Those of womb-birth have other pleasures and still cannot approach the Buddha, Dharma, and sacred assembly. If the roads of awakening and benefit to others are temporarily closed, abundance cannot take the place of freedom. Only when sight, hearing, and practice open again have they truly left the palace.
Why Is Deep Remorse Not Another Punishment?
The Buddha says that if those who doubted recognize their original fault, deeply take themselves to task, and seek to leave, their wish will at once be fulfilled. They can go before the Buddha of Measureless Life to make offerings and travel throughout the places of immeasurable buddhas to cultivate merit. No additional sentence is imposed, nor must they first repay an equivalent quantity of pain. When doubt is truly recognized and the direction of mind changes, the relationship and practice once closed become open again.
The function of remorse is therefore not to turn a person into a new executioner of the self. It is to stop defending the net of doubt. The sūtra clearly names the original fault—doubt concerning Buddha-wisdom—and clearly names what is regained—seeing the Buddha, making offerings, and cultivating virtue. Cause and result answer one another. Remorse does not remain an emotion of self-condemnation; it turns the heart again toward the Buddha-wisdom once distrusted.
The Buddha concludes that a bodhisattva who gives rise to doubt “loses great benefit.” Great benefit is not a further pleasure outside the palace. It is the whole of seeing the Buddha, hearing the Dharma, joining the assembly, and continuing to learn and practice. Because the loss arises from doubt, restoration opens through clear trust. The sūtra’s exhortation rests in the recovery of relationship, not in intensifying fear.
Why Does the Question of Womb- and Transformation-Birth Suddenly Turn to Great Bodhisattvas?
Maitreya immediately asks how many non-retrogressive bodhisattvas from this world will be born in that buddha-land. The Buddha answers that sixty-seven koṭis will go there, each having already made offerings to innumerable buddhas and standing at a stage comparable to Maitreya. He then adds that bodhisattvas of lesser practice and those with only a little merit are likewise beyond counting and will all be born there. The turn places the gains and losses of doubt and trust within a far wider vision of embracing activity.
The sūtra speaks not only of beginners temporarily separated by doubt, but of non-retrogressive bodhisattvas being born there together. It speaks not only of profound merit, but explicitly records that bodhisattvas of lesser practice and those with little merit are beyond counting. Those embraced by the land do not pass through a narrow road admitting only one capacity. Their differences are not erased, but all are placed in the direction of birth there and further progress.
The Buddha then moves from land to land, repeatedly naming a buddha, the number of bodhisattvas, and their practices. The bodhisattvas of the land of Unsurpassed Flower are especially described as non-retrogressive and courageous in wisdom, able in a short time to embrace the steadfast Dharma cultivated by great beings over long kalpas. The land of Fearless Buddha includes great bodhisattvas, lesser bodhisattvas, and bhikṣus. The numbers make birth there more than a vague statement that “many” go. Land by land, it receives distinct weight.
If an Entire Kalpa Cannot Exhaust the Account, Why Give So Many Numbers First?
At the end of the enumeration, the Buddha immediately says that these are not the only buddha-lands: the same is true throughout the immeasurable lands of the ten directions. Merely naming the buddhas and those bodhisattvas and bhikṣus born there could not be completed in a whole kalpa. The preceding figures are therefore not a total, but a summary. They give vastness a perceptible entrance; the final sentence prevents that entrance from being mistaken for a boundary.
Reading figures of sixty-seven, one hundred and eighty, and ninety koṭis can leave our attention caught in their relative size. The sūtra’s words “I still could not finish” draw the heart away from comparison and back to inexhaustibility. A land with a larger number is not thereby pronounced more excellent, and those not listed are not excluded from embracing activity. Every figure points toward the same conclusion: throughout the ten directions, those born there are exceedingly numerous and without number.
The passage begins with one person bowing to the Buddha and wishing to see. It ends with assemblies from immeasurable buddha-lands throughout the ten directions being born there. The one act of homage is not drowned in the enormous numbers, and the enormous numbers do not leave the first wish to see behind. From Ānanda’s joined palms through the mutual sight of the two lands and into the shared birth of bodhisattvas from the ten directions, the sūtra gradually expands seeing into a common world that cannot be told in an entire kalpa.
Carrying Forward — How the Three Ancient Mirrors Illuminate the Same Gate
Jingxing reads the passage as a joint disclosure of gain and loss: bowing, the wish to see, the emission of light, and mutual sight first reveal the virtue of the land; the loss of womb-birth then encourages abandonment of the net of doubt. At Maitreya’s question concerning non-retrogressive bodhisattvas, he marks a clear transition into the birth there of great bodhisattvas. Huiyuan establishes the same fivefold sequence and gathers the suffering of womb-birth more concisely into inability to see the Three Jewels and cultivate goodness; therefore, though other pleasures remain, those beings do not enjoy their condition. Neither master calls the provisions of the palace a punishment, and both place the true measure of gain and loss in whether the Buddha-Dharma is present.
Tanluan does not write another line-by-line commentary on this exchange. He instead says of the accomplishment of the land, “the community born from the Tathāgata’s pure flower, transformation-born from the flower of perfect awakening,” and describes the assembly as arising from the Tathāgata’s pure ocean of wisdom. Its depth still returns to the original vow that is not empty: Dharmākara’s vow has become the power that embraces in the present, and that power makes what the vow promised truly effective in sentient beings.
From doctrinal outline, gain and loss, and the adornment of the land, the three ancient mirrors each enter by a different way. In the end they sharpen the sūtra’s own question: if peace and bliss do not include seeing the Buddha and hearing the Dharma, have they become complete? The answer does not stop with blame for those who doubted. It shows how the gate opens again: they “at once fulfill their wish, go before the Buddha of Measureless Life, and respectfully make offerings.” That gate was never measured by the size of the palace, but by whether sentient beings could once more move toward the Buddha, the Dharma, and an inexhaustible bodhisattva path.

Placement of the passage as a whole. This passage begins when the Buddha instructs Ānanda to face west and bow to the Buddha of Measureless Life. It proceeds through the universal illumination of the Buddha’s light, mutual sight between the two lands, the questions and answers on womb- and transformation-birth, and the simile of the princes confined in a palace. It ends with the numbers of bodhisattvas from the Sahā world and thirteen other buddha-lands who will be born there and with the summary of the many beings from the ten directions. Within the unit, the text expressly turns from the gains and losses of ordinary and lesser practitioners to the birth there of great bodhisattvas.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
Jingxing’s Linked-Meaning Exposition and Praise on the Sūtra of Measureless Life places this passage after the exhortations concerning the evils of the Sahā world and classifies its opening as follows:
—“Third, praise and blame reveal gain and loss so that beings may cultivate and abandon. It has five parts. This first part is the Buddha’s instruction that Ānanda bow to Amitābha Buddha” 〔T37n1748 0168c02〕.
The five stages are: the Buddha’s instruction that Ānanda bow, Ānanda’s obedience and wish to see, the Buddha of Measureless Life emitting light in response to the request, the two lands seeing one another, and the gains and losses of the land being revealed through what is seen. The questions and answers on womb- and transformation-birth and the simile of the princes confined in a palace both fall within the fifth stage. Huiyuan’s Commentary on the Meaning of the Sūtra of Measureless Life likewise divides the passage into bowing, seeking to see, emission of light, mutual sight, and the revelation of gain and loss: 「就中有五:一佛勸阿難禮無量壽;二阿難奉命敬禮彼佛并願求見;三由前請,無量壽佛放光普照;四因佛光照,彼此相見;五因相見,具彰彼國得失之事,令人修捨。」—“Within it there are five parts: first, the Buddha exhorts Ānanda to bow to the Buddha of Measureless Life; second, Ānanda follows the instruction, respectfully bows to that Buddha, and wishes to see; third, because of the preceding request, the Buddha of Measureless Life emits light that illuminates universally; fourth, because the Buddha’s light shines, the two lands see one another; fifth, because of that mutual sight, the matters of gain and loss in that land are fully revealed so that people may cultivate and abandon” 〔T37n1745 0115b01〕.
After the questions and answers on womb- and transformation-birth end, the unit contains another transition into a large division. Jingxing marks it expressly: 「第四、重申大菩薩往生西方增其往生之意。」—“Fourth, it again sets forth the birth of great bodhisattvas in the western land, increasing the aspiration for birth there” 〔T37n1748 0170a14〕. Huiyuan likewise states: 「上來第三明攝下人往生彼國,自下第四重攝上人往生彼國。」—“The third part above revealed the embracing of people of lesser capacity for birth in that land; from here the fourth part again embraces people of higher capacity for birth in that land” 〔T37n1745 0115c15〕. At 「於此世界有幾所不退菩薩生彼佛國」—“How many non-retrogressive bodhisattvas from this world will be born in that buddha-land?” 〔T12n0360 0278b27〕, T360 thus turns from the gains and losses of womb- and transformation-birth to the birth there of great bodhisattvas from this and other lands. The closing words 「我今為汝略說之耳」—“What I have now given you is only a brief account” 〔T12n0360 0278c29〕 complete the section of questions and answers and extensive explanation. The next unit begins transmission.
II. Collation with the Alternate Translations (Four Translations and One Assembly) — recorded without adjudication
| Recension | Location of seeing the land and womb- and transformation-birth | Verbatim collation |
|---|---|---|
| Kang Sengkai recension, T360 | Seeing the land, the questions and answers on womb- and transformation-birth, and the numbers of great bodhisattvas born there form a continuous passage. —“Rise and arrange your robes once more; join your palms respectfully and bow to the Buddha of Measureless Life” 〔T12n0360 0277c26〕. The causality of doubt and trust is unfolded after seeing the land. |
| Lokakṣema recension, T361 | The main passage stands at 0298b26–0299b22; the statement that those who doubt spend five hundred years in confinement is placed earlier within the three grades. 若欲見之不?」—“Out of pity for all of you, I will cause you to see the Buddha of Measureless Purity and the land in which the bodhisattvas and arhats dwell. Do you wish to see it?” 〔T12n0361 0298b26〕. The earlier passage already says: 「其人奉行施與如是者,若其然後中復悔,心中狐疑,不信分檀布施作諸善後世得其福、不信有無量清淨佛國、不信往生其國中」—“If a person has practiced giving in this way but afterward regrets it, has doubt in the heart, does not trust that distributing gifts, giving, and performing good deeds bring merit in a later life, does not trust that the realm of the Buddha of Measureless Purity exists, and does not trust in birth in that realm” 〔T12n0361 0292a16〕. |
| Zhi Qian recension, T362 | The main passage stands at 0316b23–0317b20; the statement that those who doubt spend five hundred years in confinement is likewise placed earlier within the three grades. 若欲見之不?」—“Out of pity for all of you, I will cause you to see Amitābha Buddha and the land in which the bodhisattvas and arhats dwell. Do you wish to see it?” 〔T12n0362 0316b23〕. An earlier passage separately says: 「其人奉行施與如是者,若其人然後復中悔,心中狐疑,不信分檀布施作諸善後世得其福,不信有彌陀佛國,不信有往生其國。」—“If a person has practiced giving in this way but afterward regrets it, has doubt in the heart, does not trust that distributing gifts, giving, and performing good deeds bring merit in a later life, does not trust that Amitābha Buddha’s land exists, and does not trust in birth in that land” 〔T12n0362 0310a26〕. |
| Faxian recension, T363 | Units 09_quanshan and 10_wue have no native corresponding scenes. After unit 08 closes, the text moves directly into seeing the land in this unit; the account of transformation-birth has another arrangement. | The preceding passage ends: 「此諸菩薩,我土五濁之所無有,經百千俱胝劫說不能盡。」—“These bodhisattvas do not exist in my land of the five turbidities; even if I spoke for hundreds of thousands of koṭis of kalpas, I could not exhaust the account” 〔T12n0363 0325a05〕. —“The bodhisattva great beings now in this land of mine have already made offerings to immeasurable buddhas and planted many roots of virtue; after their lives end, all attain birth in the world of Ultimate Bliss. Ānanda, rise, join your palms, face west, and bow with the crown of your head” 〔T12n0363 0325a07〕. —“If sentient beings plant many roots of virtue with signless wisdom, purify body and mind, leave discrimination far behind, seek birth in the pure field, and proceed toward a buddha’s awakening, at the end of their lives, in the space of an instant, they sit upon jeweled lotus flowers in the Buddha’s pure land with their bodily marks complete” 〔T12n0363 0325b22〕. |
| Bodhiruci, Assembly Five of T310 | Units 09_quanshan and 10_wue have no native corresponding scenes. After the bodhisattvas’ virtues conclude, the text moves directly into seeing the land in this unit. The questions and answers on womb- and transformation-birth are close to T360 but differ in words and order. | The preceding passage ends: 「阿難! —“Ānanda, I have now briefly stated the true merits of the assembly of bodhisattva great beings born in the realm of Ultimate Bliss; they are all like this” 〔T11n0310 0099c03〕. —“This is the world of Ultimate Bliss of the Buddha of Measureless Life. You should rise from your seat, join your palms respectfully, place the five parts of your body on the ground, and bow to the Buddha” 〔T11n0310 0099c08〕. Those of transformation-birth are described: 「若有眾生斷除疑悔積集善根,希求佛智乃至廣大智,信已善根。 —“If sentient beings cut off doubt and regret, gather roots of goodness, seek Buddha-wisdom through vast wisdom, and trust the roots of goodness they have formed, they sit cross-legged inside the lotus flower, suddenly undergo transformation-birth, and emerge in an instant” 〔T11n0310 0100a27〕. Of those who doubt it says: 「雖生彼國,於蓮花中不得出現」—“Although born in that land, they cannot appear from within the lotus flower” 〔T11n0310 0100b18〕. |
T361 and T362 place doubt, regret, the border region, and the five hundred years earlier within the middle and lower grades, while their main passages focus on bowing, seeing the land, and the numbers of bodhisattvas who will be born there. T360, T363, and T310 ask directly about womb- and transformation-birth after seeing the land. The zero native-scene finding for 10_wue in T363 and T310 means that these two versions do not contain an original scene that unfolds the five evils, five pains, and five burnings one by one. The seeing of the land above belongs to the present unit, while the exhortation to preserve the teaching afterward belongs to transmission. Neither is counted backward as unit 10.
III. Scriptural and Treatise Grounding (the “eye”)
The eye of this passage is that seeing the land means seeing not only its adornments, but also the two kinds of experience that arise from trusting or doubting Buddha-wisdom. The sūtra first allows the two lands to see one another, then locates the issue in whether someone can see the Buddha, hear the Dharma, draw near to the sacred assembly, make offerings, and cultivate goodness. Womb-birth is not biological birth. The sūtra itself says that these beings live in palaces made of the seven precious substances and experience pleasure like devas. Because doubt concerning Buddha-wisdom leaves them separated from the Three Jewels for five hundred years, their condition is designated womb-birth. Transformation-birth is likewise more than a difference in birthplace. Those who clearly trust Buddha-wisdom and dedicate and direct merit with trust arise within lotus flowers and immediately possess complete bodily marks, light, wisdom, and merit.
Tanluan’s Commentary on the Treatise on Birth in That Land explains this relation through the causality of the land’s adornment. After citing the verse, he sets forth this aspiration: 「使我國土悉於如來淨華中生,眷屬平等與奪無路。」—“May all beings in my land be born within the Tathāgata’s pure flower, equal as members of the spiritual family, with no road for arbitrary acceptance or rejection” 〔T40n1819 0830b08〕. Of the merit of the great assembly he further says: 「願我成佛,所有天人皆從如來智慧清淨海生。」—“When I become a buddha, may all devas and humans arise from the Tathāgata’s pure ocean of wisdom” 〔T40n1819 0832b23〕. Birth from the flower and birth from wisdom are not two unrelated lines. The same pure power of the vow brings those born there into the Buddha-Dharma’s spiritual family and prevents the great assembly from falling away from Buddha-wisdom.
The Commentary on the Treatise then returns the cause of accomplishment to the original vow and the power of its result: 「願以成力、力以就願,願不徒然、力不虛設,力願相符畢竟不差」—“The vow brings the power to completion, and the power fulfills the vow. The vow is not in vain, and the power is not exercised in vain; power and vow accord, never diverging in the end” 〔T40n1819 0840a14〕. Trust in Buddha-wisdom here is therefore not blind assent to an abstract proposition. It is trust that Dharmākara’s original vow has become buddha-power and can give the sentient beings it embraces the conditions for seeing, hearing, cultivating, and realizing.
IV. Essentials of the Commentary on This Passage
The sūtra and its line-by-line commentaries allow the passage to be read in six levels:
- Bowing and seeing. The Buddha first tells Ānanda to arrange his robes, join his palms, and bow; he also says that the buddhas throughout the ten directions constantly praise the Buddha of Measureless Life. Ānanda straightens his body, faces west, and makes a full prostration. His wish includes the Buddha as teacher, the land, and the bodhisattva and śrāvaka assemblies. In response, the Buddha of Measureless Life emits light. Mountains and all other forms take on one color, the lights of śrāvakas and bodhisattvas are hidden within it, and the four groups of this assembly see that land as the assembly there sees this one.
- What is seen contains both virtue and loss. Through three questions, the Buddha confirms that Ānanda has seen the land’s adornment, heard the Buddha’s voice teaching throughout the worlds, and seen the people travel in palaces made of the seven precious substances to make offerings in the ten directions. Only the fourth question points out womb-birth. The palaces extend for one hundred or five hundred yojanas, and the pleasure is like that of the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. The loss of womb-birth therefore does not lie in material deprivation.
- Doubt concerning wisdom and clear trust. Jingxing first identifies the doubt addressed by the phrase “not understanding Buddha-wisdom”: 「有疑彌陀雖有弘誓,眾生萬品,頗能接引十方天人令生彼國? —“Some doubt that although Amitābha has vast vows, sentient beings are of ten thousand kinds: can he truly receive and guide the devas and humans of the ten directions and cause them to be born in that land? Therefore the text says that they do not understand Buddha-wisdom” 〔T37n1748 0169b17〕. —“Amitābha has realized the one true dharma-realm; no virtue is incomplete and every fault has been exhausted. His activity reaches the limits of the future without being exhausted and receives beings in accordance with the original vow. Therefore sentient beings with the relevant conditions are all born in that land. The net of doubt should not remain across the heart” 〔T37n1748 0169b18〕. The remaining four wisdoms are explained in relation to inconceivability, ineffability, the vast activity of wisdom and compassion, and the supremacy of buddha-activity, thereby differentiating the aspects hidden by doubt.
- What the terms womb- and transformation-birth designate. Those who doubt still trust the causality of wrongdoing and merit, cultivate goodness, and wish for birth there; they therefore are not prevented from being born. Yet for five hundred years they cannot see the Buddha, hear the Dharma, or meet the sacred assembly. Those who clearly trust undergo transformation-birth within lotus flowers made of the seven precious substances and immediately possess complete bodily marks, light, wisdom, and merit. The commentary finally states: 「由此疑佛智,雖生彼國而在邊地不被聖化,事若胎生,宜之應捨。」—“Because of this doubt concerning Buddha-wisdom, although they are born in that land, they remain in the border region and do not receive the transformation of the sages. The condition is like womb-birth and should therefore be abandoned” 〔T37n1748 0169c23〕. The words the condition is like mark this as a designation based on enclosure and a long absence of sight and hearing, not an explanation in terms of an ordinary physical womb.
- The simile of the princes confined in a palace. The young princes dwell in a palace adorned with the seven precious substances. Their food, clothing, and music are complete, yet they remain bound by golden chains and do not enjoy the place. The sūtra says that those who doubt undergo no punishment and not even one thought of evil. Their actual suffering is that they cannot see the Three Jewels, make offerings, or cultivate goodness. When they recognize the loss caused by doubt and deeply take themselves to task, they can go before the Buddha and travel throughout the places of the buddhas. Remorse opens sight, hearing, and practice; it is not a move from one kind of pleasure to another.
- From one land into the ten directions. Maitreya asks how many non-retrogressive bodhisattvas from this world will be born there. The Buddha answers sixty-seven koṭis and adds innumerable bodhisattvas of lesser practice and people of little merit. He then names thirteen other buddha-lands; together with the Sahā world, they make fourteen. These numbers are not a closed register. The final statement that an entire kalpa would not exhaust the account opens the finite list into innumerable beings throughout the ten directions.
V. Divergent Readings of the Commentators — recorded without adjudication
| Doctrinal point | Jingxing, Linked-Meaning Exposition and Praise (T1748) | Huiyuan, Commentary on the Meaning (T1745) | Tanluan, Commentary on the Treatise on Birth in That Land (T1819) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loss of womb-birth | Explains the net of doubt through the five wisdoms and calls the condition 「事若胎生」—“like womb-birth” 〔T37n1748 0169c24〕. The emphasis lies on remaining in the border region without receiving the transformation of the sages. | Following the sūtra, gathers the loss into absence from the Three Jewels and inability to cultivate goodness: 「明胎生者無餘苦事,但五百歲不見三寶不得修善,用此為苦;以此苦故,雖樂不樂。」—“Those of womb-birth undergo no other painful matter. For five hundred years they do not see the Three Jewels and cannot cultivate goodness; they take this as suffering. Because of this suffering, although they have pleasure, they do not enjoy it” 〔T37n1745 0115c08〕. | Does not explain this passage’s questions and answers on womb-birth line by line, but speaks of birth from the Tathāgata’s pure flower and equality within the spiritual family as adornments of the land. |
| Five wisdoms | Distributes the five names among the pure dharma-realm, great mirror wisdom, equality wisdom, discerning wisdom, and the wisdom that accomplishes what is to be done, and presents a distinct doubt opposed by each. —“Buddha-wisdom is profound and deep; others cannot measure it, and it is called ‘inconceivable wisdom.’ Buddha-wisdom is manifold and cannot be exhausted in words, and therefore it is called ‘ineffable.’ It exhaustively knows the Dharma gates and is called ‘vast wisdom.’ Its station rises above all others and is called ‘unsurpassed supreme wisdom without peer or equal’” 〔T37n1745 0115b28〕. | Says of the great assembly that 「天人不動眾,清淨智海生。」—“The unmoving assembly of devas and humans arises from the pure ocean of wisdom” 〔T40n1819 0832b19〕. He does not separately assign the five names in this passage. |
| Transformation-birth | Those of excellent wisdom naturally undergo transformation-birth within lotus flowers, in contrast with the womb-birth caused by doubt. | Follows the causal order, taking clear trust as cause and transformation-birth within a flower as result. —“The community born from the Tathāgata’s pure flower is transformation-born from the flower of perfect awakening” 〔T40n1819 0830b03〕, emphasizing the pure flower of perfect awakening and equality within the spiritual family. |
| Birth there of great bodhisattvas | Makes this the fourth large division, first addressing the Sahā world and then other directions; thirteen other lands together with this one make fourteen. | Likewise marks a turn from embracing people of lesser capacity to again embracing people of higher capacity, and says that outside the fourteen lands there are immeasurably many others. | Explains the great bodhisattva’s entry and emergence through the five gates and the power of the original vow after birth there, without separately explaining each land and number in this passage. |
Jingxing and Huiyuan both place the loss of womb-birth in separation from the Buddha-Dharma and sacred community. Tanluan does not write another passage-by-passage explanation of womb-birth, but describes the spiritual family of the land through the pure flower of perfect awakening and the pure ocean of wisdom. The three masters speak at different levels about the five wisdoms, womb-birth, and transformation-birth. Their statements are retained separately, and no interpretation offered by one is presented as their shared conclusion.
VI. Terms
| Term | Grounded sense and range |
|---|---|
| Without obstruction or impediment | The buddhas throughout the ten directions proclaim and praise the Buddha of Measureless Life without being held or hindered. The base text uses the graph 閡; the alternate graph is recorded in Topic IX. |
| Womb-birth | Birth in a palace in that land followed by five hundred years without seeing the Buddha, hearing the Dharma, or seeing the bodhisattva and śrāvaka assemblies. Doubt causes enclosure, and the condition is like being within a womb. It does not mean that the land contains ordinary physical wombs. |
| Transformation-birth | Those who clearly trust Buddha-wisdom, perform meritorious deeds, and dedicate and direct merit with trust naturally arise within lotus flowers made of the seven precious substances. In a brief moment, their bodily marks, light, wisdom, and merit become complete. Tanluan further says: 「彼安樂國土莫非是阿彌陀如來正覺淨華之所化生,同一念佛無別道故」—“Everything in that land of Peace and Bliss is transformation-born from the pure flower of Amitābha Tathāgata’s perfect awakening, because all share the same recollection of the Buddha and there is no other path” 〔T40n1819 0838b02〕. |
| Five names of Buddha-wisdom | The sūtra lists Buddha-wisdom, inconceivable wisdom, ineffable wisdom, the vast wisdom of the Great Vehicle, and the unsurpassed supreme wisdom without peer or equal. Ancient commentaries give detailed classifications concerning whether Buddha-wisdom is a general term or each of the five names is distinct. The sūtra itself simply contrasts failure to understand, doubt, and disbelief with clear trust. |
| Dedication and direction with trust | Performing meritorious deeds and turning their merit with trust toward birth in that land. The passage joins this with clear trust in Buddha-wisdom; the merit is not retained for present personal enjoyment. |
| Non-retrogressive bodhisattvas | Bodhisattvas who no longer retrogress from awakening. The sūtra first names sixty-seven koṭis from the Sahā world, then thirteen other buddha-lands. Bodhisattvas of lesser practice and those with little merit are likewise innumerable among those born there. |
| Yojana | A measure used for the palaces. The passage gives one hundred and five hundred yojanas; the measure indicates the great extent of the dwellings but does not by itself determine ultimate peace and bliss. |
VII. Similes and Rhetoric
The passage of light first gives the flood at the end of a kalpa as its simile: 「譬如劫水彌滿世界,其中萬物沈沒不現,滉瀁浩汗唯見大水;彼佛光明亦復如是,聲聞、菩薩一切光明皆悉隱蔽,唯見佛光明耀顯赫。」—“It is like the flood at the end of a kalpa filling the world: all things within it sink and do not appear; over the vast, surging expanse only the great waters are seen. The light of that Buddha is the same. All the light of the śrāvakas and bodhisattvas disappears, and only the Buddha’s light remains, brilliant, manifest, and resplendent” 〔T12n0360 0278a04〕. The water simile reveals pervasion and the disappearance of other forms; the application rests in seeing only the Buddha’s light. The Buddha of Measureless Life is then 「威德巍巍如須彌山王」—“towering in majestic virtue like Mount Sumeru” 〔T12n0360 0278a08〕, using the king of mountains rising above all others to reveal the Buddha’s body high above the worlds. One simile spreads horizontally and the other rises vertically: one speaks of light pervading while other lights disappear, the other of the Buddha’s towering body rising above all.
The simile of the princes in the questions and answers on womb- and transformation-birth separates possessing pleasure from being free. The sūtra says: 「若有諸小王子得罪於王,輒內彼宮中,繫以金鎖,供給飲食、衣服、床蓐、華香、伎樂,如轉輪王無所乏少。」—“If young princes offend the king, he has them placed inside that palace and bound with golden chains. Food, clothing, bedding, flowers, incense, and music are supplied, and they lack nothing in comparison with the wheel-turning king” 〔T12n0360 0278b13〕. The application then makes the measure explicit: 「無有刑罰乃至一念惡事,但於五百歲中不見三寶,不得供養修諸善本。 —“There is no punishment there, not even one thought of evil. But for five hundred years they do not see the Three Jewels and cannot make offerings or cultivate roots of goodness. They take this as suffering; although they have other pleasures, they do not enjoy remaining there” 〔T12n0360 0278b19〕. The sūtra itself sets the bounds of the simile: suffering lies not in punishment, but in the temporary closure of sight, hearing, offerings, and cultivation.
The final list of thirteen other buddha-lands repeatedly gives a number, a name, and the refrain that all will be born there. At the end the text suddenly removes the boundary established by numbers and says that an entire kalpa would still not exhaust the account. Repetition makes the breadth of birth there countable for a time; the final statement reveals that it cannot in truth be fully counted.
VIII. Citation and Carrying Forward
- Transformation-birth from the flower of perfect awakening. Tanluan’s words 「如來淨華眾,正覺華化生。」—“The community born from the Tathāgata’s pure flower is transformation-born from the flower of perfect awakening” 〔T40n1819 0830b03〕 carry forward transformation-birth within the flower and say that the spiritual family in the Pure Land is born together from the pure flower of perfect awakening. The sūtra distinguishes experience through doubt and trust; the Commentary on the Treatise speaks from the adornment of the fruit about equality within the spiritual family. The two levels illuminate one another without replacement.
- Birth from the pure ocean of wisdom. The sūtra makes doubt concerning Buddha-wisdom the cause of womb-birth and clear trust the cause of transformation-birth. The Commentary on the Treatise gathers the assembly of that land as arising from the Tathāgata’s pure ocean of wisdom and describes it as unmoving in its Mahāyāna roots.
- The power of the original vow does not act in vain. This passage begins with Ānanda’s bow and with the Buddha’s light answering his request; it later says that those born there from the ten directions cannot be fully counted. The Commentary on the Treatise explains that the vow becomes power and power fulfills the vow, carrying the causal line from Dharmākara’s ground to the present embracing activity.
- Fourteen lands are only a summary. Huiyuan counts the thirteen other lands together with the Sahā world as fourteen, and Jingxing uses the same number. Both infer from the closing words that beings from the other directions are exceedingly numerous and cannot all be named. The carrying forward of the numbers lies in revealing breadth, not in closing the names into a total.
