卷首心要Essence

The Sūtra of One Hundred Parables has ninety-eight parables. Each first tells of a deed, then turns with a sentence into the Dharma. The deed is done by a fool, and the people laugh at him; the Dharma is done by the reader, and the laughter has to fall back on oneself. This book sets the two side by side, so that one laughs first and recognizes afterward.

To read a parable, first find the opening sentence of its second part. That sentence is usually “so too are worldly people,” “like the followers of other paths,” or “so too the bhikṣu”; from there, match backward: what the salt stands for, what the milk stands for, what the three-storied tower stands for. Once matched, the laughter falls on oneself; unmatched, it is only a story.

At the end of the first fascicle there is a preface in which five hundred brāhmaṇa students question the Buddha, all the way to the question of what nirvāṇa is born from. The Buddha answers that nirvāṇa is neither born nor dies, and adds: one need not die to know that death is suffering, and the Buddha need not enter nirvāṇa to know that nirvāṇa is everlasting bliss. Their minds opened, and only then did the Buddha say, “I shall now set out the many parables for you at length.” The parables are told for a mind that has opened.

This edition takes the Taishō canon as its base text; its four fascicles are four units and its ninety-eight parables ninety-eight sections. No other recension is followed for rearrangement; the preface that the Song, Yuan, and Ming editions move to the head of the fascicle is translated where the Taishō places it, and the difference is recorded in the Apparatus. Finish one fascicle before beginning the next.

緒論Introduction

I. The Work and Its Base Text

The Sūtra of One Hundred Parables, Taishō volume 4, number 209, in four fascicles, is attributed “composed by the Venerable Sengqiesina” (T04 0543a06) and “translated by Qiunapidi, Tripiṭaka master from India, under the Southern Qi” (T04 0543a07). This edition takes this Chinese text as its sole base; the fascicle division follows the base text, and each fascicle is one unit. Each fascicle opens with a table of parable titles, reproduced in the Source Text and in the colophon paragraph of the Plain Reading. The whole work has ninety-eight parables, each headed by its own numbered title ending in “parable.” At the end of the treatise the author calls the work “the Garland of Flowers for the Foolish” (T04 0557c24); this edition records that name but does not use it as the title.

II. The Form of a Parable

Each parable has two parts. The first narrates a deed; its protagonist is mostly “a foolish man,” “a man,” “one man,” without a name; when the deed is done, the people often laugh. The second part turns to the Dharma with “it is just the same,” “so too,” “like,” or “as,” and points at followers of other paths, bhikṣus, the four kinds of disciples, or worldly people. In this edition the Plain Reading gives one paragraph per parable, a long parable being divided into story and application; the tenth topic of the Apparatus records, parable by parable, where story and application begin and end, the sentence that makes the application, the teaching intended, and the places where story and application do not match.

III. The Place of the Preface

In the Taishō base text, after the twenty-one parables of Fascicle 1 and after the closing fascicle title, there is a preface of three hundred and seventy-four characters, from “Thus it was heard: at one time the Buddha was in Rājagṛha, in the Bamboo Grove of Kalandaka” (T04 0546a16) to “Listen well! I shall now set out the many parables for you at length” (T04 0546b10). The Song, Yuan, and Ming editions move this passage to the head of the fascicle, as the Taishō notes record. This edition translates it where the base text places it, as a paragraph of its own; the difference is recorded in the ninth topic of the Apparatus, without judging which is right.

IV. Mirror and Old Commentary

Within the Chinese canon consulted, this work has no running old commentary and no alternate translation; this edition records zero honestly and supplies none in its place. The application of each parable is that parable’s own interpretation, and every scriptural proof cited in the Exposition is drawn from the applications. Where the teaching a parable illustrates has a sentence verbatim identical in the base text of another work carried in this edition, the third topic of the Apparatus records its locus; where nothing is found, it records that nothing was found. No modern scholars are cited, and no concordance with the Pali Jātakas is made.

V. Lines Kept

Parable titles follow the first line of the base text verbatim; where the fascicle’s table of contents differs, both are recorded. Variants in the recensions are recorded item by item from the Taishō notes, recorded without adjudication. Sanskrit names follow only the transcriptions handed down by the old masters; where none was handed down, the Chinese sound is kept. The reader’s pages carry no working vocabulary.

讀法How to read

I. First Find the Opening Sentence of the Application

Read each parable twice. The first time, read the story: what the fool did, and why the people laughed. The second time, begin from the first sentence of the second part, “so too are worldly people,” “like the followers of other paths,” “so too the bhikṣu,” and match backward: each thing in the story against which thing in the Dharma. Salt against moderating food, milk against giving, water against the precepts, garments against the Dharma, the three-storied tower against the fruits of the Way. Once matched, the parable has been read.

II. How to Read the Five Layers Together

The Plain Reading gives one paragraph per parable; the label at the head of the paragraph carries the parable’s number in the whole work and its title from the base text. A long parable is divided into story and application. Read the Plain Reading first; when a sentence seems to turn abruptly, go back to the Source Text for that sentence, for the base text turns in just that way. The tenth topic of the Apparatus, the correspondence of parable and application, lays out each parable’s matching in a table; consult it when the Plain Reading does not match on its own. The Exposition does not go parable by parable; it groups the parables by whom the application points at, and says what one group of parables, taken together, describes. The Essentials open a separate line and quote only the words of the text.

III. Laughter

Of the ninety-eight parables, thirty have laughter written in the base text, twelve of them in the first fascicle. Laughter is the sound of onlookers seeing the fault. Among the parables without written laughter, pause a little longer over those in which the fault destroys the onlookers too, or the onlookers themselves believe.

IV. What Is Not Here

There is no concordance with the Pali Jātakas, no textual criticism by modern scholars, no history of parable literature. These things can be done; they are not done on the reader’s pages of this book.

V. The Preface

At the end of Fascicle 1 there is a preface in which five hundred brāhmaṇa students question the Buddha; the base text places it at the end of the fascicle, other recensions at the head. One may read the parables first and the preface after, or the preface first and the parables after. On reaching the sentence “you are not yet dead, and yet you know that death is suffering” (T04 0546b07), look back at where the fools of the ninety-eight parables went wrong, and it becomes clear why this book speaks in parables.

凡例Conventions

I. Base Text, Scope, and Fascicles

The base text is T04n0209 of the Taishō canon, the Sūtra of One Hundred Parables in four fascicles, translated by Qiunapidi under the Southern Qi. The fascicle division follows the base text, each fascicle being one unit; the notes recording that the Song, Yuan, and Ming editions do not divide the fascicles are recorded in the Apparatus and are not used to change the division.

II. The Parable as Section

Within a fascicle the parable is the section. In the Source Text each parable’s numbered title stands on its own line with a locus; the parable text runs on within the same page and breaks at a page change. In the Plain Reading each parable is one paragraph, headed by a label giving the parable’s number in the whole work, its title taken verbatim from the first line of the base text without the number, and a locus; a long parable may be divided into story and application, still under one label. The colophon and table of contents at the head of a fascicle are labelled as the colophon of that fascicle; the fascicle title at its end as the fascicle title; the preface of Fascicle 1 as the preface; the closing verses at the end of Fascicle 4 as the closing verses. These four kinds of paragraph are not counted as parables.

III. Parable Titles

On the reader’s pages the parable title always follows the first line of the base text verbatim, variant characters included; where the fascicle’s table of contents differs from the first line, the first topic of the Apparatus records both.

IV. The Application and the Speaker

The application of each parable, from “it is just the same,” “so too,” “like,” or “as” onward, is the author’s direct speech; the Plain Reading translates it in full, without omission or merging. Speech within a parable is assigned by the base text’s “said,” “asked,” and “answered”; the narrating subject is the author.

V. The Division of the Five Layers

Source Text—reproduces the base text, keeping the fascicle titles, the author’s and translator’s attributions, the tables of contents, the parable titles, and the loci.
Plain Reading—translates parable by parable, covering every semantic movement.
Apparatus—ten topics: nine shared with the works of the Pure Land axis, and a tenth, the correspondence of parable and application.
Exposition—speaks with the parable as its subject, grouped by whom the application points at, with a closing section, Carrying Forward.
Essentials—a separate line, not following the order of the Exposition, quoting only the words of the text.

VI. Mirror and Old Commentary

This work has no running old commentary and no alternate translation; this edition records zero honestly and supplies none. Where the teaching a parable illustrates has a sentence verbatim identical in the base text of another work carried in this edition, the third topic of the Apparatus records its locus; where nothing is found, it records that nothing was found. No modern scholars and no Pali Jātakas are cited.

VII. Verbatim Quotation and Loci

In the Chinese pages, double corner brackets hold only verbatim quotation, punctuated as in the base text; single corner brackets hold only present-day paraphrase. In the English pages, verbatim quotation of the base text appears in English within quotation marks, and in the Apparatus the Chinese original is kept beside its English rendering. The locus is the line boundary of the canon on which the first quoted character stands, in the short form T04 0543a16.

VIII. Collation, Divergence, and Open Questions

The Taishō notes and collation records are recorded item by item in the ninth topic of the Apparatus, recorded without adjudication; characters follow the base text, including those at special code points. Doubtful points are recorded as doubtful, side by side, and are not written as judgements.

譯者Translator

I. The Author and the Chinese Translator

The base text is attributed “composed by the Venerable Sengqiesina” (T04 0543a06) and “translated by Qiunapidi, Tripiṭaka master from India, under the Southern Qi” (T04 0543a07); the attribution is the same at the head of all four fascicles. This edition reproduces it and does not investigate their biographies further; for the two names no Sanskrit form transcribed by the old masters has been handed down, and this edition keeps the Chinese sound.

II. Mirror and Witnesses

This work has no running old commentary and no alternate translation. The application of each parable is the author’s own interpretation, and this edition takes the application as the scriptural proof for each parable. The variants of the Song, Yuan, Ming, Koryŏ, and Manji editions collated in the Taishō canon are reproduced as witnesses for collation.

III. The Translator and Annotator of This Edition

Translated and annotated by Shi Huijing, in two languages and five layers. Doctrinal decisions, the choice of words, and the final word are all the translator’s own hand.
