金剛般若波羅蜜經 分一 法會因由分

心要Essence

The whole of the Diamond Sūtra begins with a meal. The Buddha speaks no Dharma first; when the hour comes he simply robes himself, takes up his bowl, walks into the city begging from house to house, returns, eats, washes his feet, arranges his seat, and sits down. Reading this stretch of ordinary daily living, the ancient masters drew out of it the very eye of the whole sūtra: the Dharma lies nowhere else than within this dependently-arisen everyday — robing, begging, washing the feet, laying out the seat, not one of them other than conditioned arising (依他, paratantra); and the perfectly-accomplished (圓成實, pariniṣpanna) is not apart from this plain, present moment. Of the single act of arranging a seat Zhiyi says, 「敷座……即諸法空為座」—— even to spread a seat and sit is already a wordless, bodily teaching of the emptiness of all dharmas. And so, in this division, before a word is spoken, prajñā is already here; only in the next division, when Subhūti asks 「云何應住,云何降伏其心」(How should one abide? How should one subdue the mind?), does the World-Honored One begin, phrase by phrase, to put it into speech.

白話Plain reading

[Prologue] The Occasion of the Assembly

The sūtra says:

如是我聞:一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,與大比丘眾千二百五十人俱。爾時,世尊食時,著衣持鉢,入舍衛大城乞食。於其城中,次第乞已,還至本處。飯食訖,收衣鉢,洗足已,敷座而坐。

This is what I heard. One time, the Buddha was staying in the country of Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, the park of Anāthapiṇḍada, together with a great gathering of monks, one thousand two hundred and fifty of them. At that time, when the meal-hour came, the World-Honored One put on his robe and took up his bowl, and went into the great city of Śrāvastī to beg for food. Inside the city he begged from house to house, in order; then he returned to his own dwelling. When he had finished his meal, he put away his robe and bowl, washed his feet, arranged his seat, and sat down.

義疏Exposition

The prologue is pure narrative — it is the one division in the whole sūtra with no “is-not” (即非) — so the Yogācāra here is not a matter of taking the three natures to dismantle a sentence, but of seeing how this stretch of the Buddha’s ordinary conduct is itself the Dharma.

The Twofold Prologue: the Prologue-of-Witness and the Prologue-of-Occasion

The ancient masters read the opening passage as two prologues. The first part — 「如是我聞,一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,與大比丘眾千二百五十人俱」— is the prologue-of-witness (證信序): the six factors are all in place — faith, hearing, time, teacher, place, assembly (the “six attainments,” 六成就). To set out these six is to give rise to faith, so the reader knows the sūtra has provenance and is no fabrication. Kuiji gathers this under the “preamble of antecedents” (文前由致), which means the same. Then 「著衣持鉢,入城乞食,次第乞已,還至本處,飯食,洗足,敷座而坐」 is the prologue-of-occasion (發起序): Jizang says, 「塗行乞食,發起正經」—— it is precisely this stretch of ordinary alms-round that draws out Subhūti’s question in the next division, the question from which the whole sūtra’s dialogue arises.

The Everyday Is the Other-Dependent, and the Other-Dependent Is the Truly-Perfected: How Yogācāra Sees This Ordinary Stretch

The prologue does not contain a single “is-not.” Does that mean it carries no Yogācāra meaning? It does not.

Yogācāra teaches that every conditioned phenomenon is dependent-arising (依他起, paratantra — “dependent on other,” that is, arising in reliance on a manifold of conditions). The Buddha’s whole sequence of acts — robing, taking the bowl, entering the city, begging door by door in order, returning, eating, washing the feet, spreading the seat, sitting down — is just such a stream of dependent arising, thought-moment after thought-moment, utterly ordinary. And the point is this: within this ordinary stretch the Buddha has not yet spoken a single word of Dharma, and yet prajñā is already present in this walking, standing, sitting, and lying.

This brings out the most essential layer of Yogācāra: the perfectly-accomplished is not apart from the other-dependent (圓成實不離依他起). The perfectly-accomplished (圓成實, pariniṣpanna) is the reality that shows itself once phenomena have been emptied of the false clinging to “real existence outside the mind”; it is not somewhere else — it is right upon this dependently-arisen everyday. So the place of awakening is not far off and waits on nothing recondite — it is here, in the ordinary acts of begging, washing the feet, and laying out the seat. Zhiyi long ago pointed to just this sense: of the act of arranging the seat he says 「即諸法空為座」—— even to spread a single seat and sit is already to embody the emptiness of all dharmas.

Teaching by the Body: Manifestation, Not Words

The marvel of the prologue lies in the word “manifestation” (示現). The Buddha utters not a word; he merely robes, begs, and seats himself — yet this stretch of the everyday is itself the bodily teaching of the highest truth: shown by the body, not declared in speech. The vast prajñā of the whole sūtra is first held up, wordlessly, through one most ordinary passage of daily life: the Dharma is not on the lips, it is here in this plain, present dependent-arising. The reader of a sūtra is usually waiting to hear some earth-shaking pronouncement; the Diamond Sūtra first lets you watch a man quietly finish his meal, wash his feet, and arrange his seat.

Yogācāra as Mirror: in the Prologue, Mirroring Only — No Forced Doctrinal Peg

This division is pure narrative; it has no frontal exposition of the two emptinesses, the three natures, or the transformation of the basis (轉依). So the Yogācāra treatises (Baifa, the Thirty Verses, the Twenty Verses, Madhyānta-vibhāga, the Mahāyāna-saṃgraha, the Cheng weishi lun) have no direct treatise-correspondence here. The reading above — “the everyday is the other-dependent, the other-dependent is the perfectly-accomplished” — takes Yogācāra as a mirror to reflect the passage; it does not claim that the prologue is expounding some particular treatise. It is mirroring, no more, not a peg forced in. Nor does the prologue find its cross-reading in the Heart Sūtra (which has no prologue at all, opening straight into 「觀自在菩薩,行深般若」), but in the parallel six-attainment prologues of the divisions of the Great Prajñāpāramitā. The Dharma of prajñā waits until the next division — Subhūti’s request and the World-Honored One’s answer — to unfold, phrase by phrase, in the “is-not”; and only then does the mirror of Yogācāra truly come to bear.

Sense of the prologue: two prologues stand together — the prologue-of-witness (證信序: the six attainments — faith, hearing, time, teacher, place, assembly — which give rise to faith) and the prologue-of-occasion (發起序: the everyday of robing, begging, the orderly round, spreading the seat; Jizang judges “the alms-round on foot sets the true sūtra in motion”). The Buddha utters not a word; the ordinary of walking, standing, sitting, lying is itself the teaching (Zhiyi: “spreading the seat is the emptiness of all dharmas as one’s seat”); the prologue-of-occasion joins to Subhūti’s request in division 2, from which the whole sūtra’s breaking-of-clinging arises. This division has no “is-not” (see register 3) — exactly where one sees how the nine-register apparatus works on a non-doctrinal passage.

2 · Collation of the Variant Translations (six Chinese versions · the prologue)

VersionOpening (verbatim)[loc]
Kumārajīva T235 (root)如是我聞:一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,與大比丘眾千二百五十人俱。爾時,世尊食時,著衣持鉢,入舍衛大城乞食。於其城中,次第乞已,還至本處。飯食訖,收衣鉢,洗足已,敷座而坐。0748c20–24

What the variants turn on: the skeleton of the prologue (thus-have-I-heard → alms-round → in order → return → meal → washing the feet → spreading the seat) is stable across all six; the narrative prologue is settled, and only the doctrine that follows diverges. Three points of difference: (a) the closing clause “the monks came to the Buddha … circled three times to the right and withdrew to one side (and Subhūti too was seated)” is found only in the two “Able-to-Cut” versions, Xuanzang and Yijing, and absent in Kumārajīva, Bodhiruci, and Paramārtha — an assembly-setting proper to the Dharmalakṣaṇa-lineage recension; (b) Yijing alone has “and a great assembly of bodhisattvas” (及大菩薩眾); (c) Dharmagupta is a word-for-word rendering of the Sanskrit (opening with a homage verse; 聞者 = Śrāvastī, 摶 = alms-round, 無親 = Anāthapiṇḍada) — its wording is the most divergent and, text-critically, the closest to the Sanskrit.

3 · “Is-Not” and the Three Natures (this division has none · the Yogācāra sense)

The prologue has no “X — is-not-X — is called X” formula: the “is-not” belongs to the main body’s breaking of clinging; the prologue is the occasion, and this is not a lack but its very constitution. The Yogācāra sense is nonetheless not absent: the everyday acts of the prologue (robing and taking the bowl, begging in order, the meal, washing the feet, spreading the seat) are just a stream of dependent-arising (依他起, paratantra); no word of Dharma has been spoken, yet prajñā is already in this walking, standing, sitting, and lying. Its sense is that the perfectly-accomplished (圓成實, pariniṣpanna) is not apart from the other-dependent — the place of awakening is right here in the ordinary of the alms-bowl, the washing, the seat. This has an ancient-master precedent (Zhiyi: “spreading the seat is the emptiness of all dharmas as one’s seat,” see register 4).

4 · Variant Readings of the Ancient Masters (by school)

  • Jizang (Three-Treatise) T1699: 「次雙證信序、發起序者,安此六事,令人生信,故名證信序。塗行乞食,發起正經,名發起序。」 [0091c24–26] — the everyday alms-round is judged the “prologue-of-occasion.”
  • Zhiyi (Tiantai) T1698: 「『敷座』者,即諸法空為座,四無畏處,此說般若也。別序竟。」 [0076c08–09] — read through contemplative method, the single act of spreading the seat already harbors “the emptiness of all dharmas.”
  • Kuiji (Yogācāra) T1700: 「此經始終有其三分:初、文前由致分;次、〔…〕發請廣說分;後、〔…〕喜悟修行分。」 [0126a11–15] (〔…〕 = the original’s sūtra-phrase markers, “from ‘爾時,須菩提…’” and “from ‘佛說是經已…’”). The general antecedents number five (the five-factor prologue-of-witness).

5 · Terminology

如是我聞 evaṃ mayā śrutam · 一時 (at one time) · 薄伽梵/婆伽婆 bhagavān · 舍衛/室羅筏 Śrāvastī · 祇樹給孤獨園 Jeta-vana Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma · 乞食 piṇḍapāta · 比丘/苾芻 bhikṣu. 〔Sanskrit as a pronunciation aid; Xuanzang transliterates 室羅筏/薄伽梵, Dharmagupta renders by sense 聞者/無親.〕

6 · Simile and Rhetoric (no simile in the prologue · the rhetoric is manifestation)

No simile. The point of the rhetoric is manifestation (示現): the Buddha speaks not a word; the everyday of robing, begging, and seating is itself the bodily teaching of the highest truth (shown by the body, not declared in words); the whole sūtra’s prajñā is first held up, wordlessly, through one stretch of ordinary daily living. Zhiyi’s “spreading the seat is the emptiness of all dharmas as one’s seat” is the ancient-master precedent of this reading. This register is light in the prologue and heavy in the simile divisions of the main body (division 4, empty space; division 26, the Dharma-body is not a form; division 32, the six similes).

7 · Cross-Reading

  • Prajñā sisters: the Great Prajñāpāramitā (its divisions’ prologues share the same six-attainment form) is the prologue’s sister-link; the Heart Sūtra has no prologue (the prajñā essence opens straight into 「觀自在……行深般若」), so the cross-reading of the prologue lies in the Great Prajñāpāramitā, not the Heart Sūtra.
  • General rule across sūtras: the general prologue’s “six attainments” (faith, hearing, time, teacher, place, assembly) are the witness-form of every sūtra, not peculiar to the Diamond Sūtra — a common feature of the prologue.
  • The Yogācāra six: the prologue is pure narrative, with no frontal teaching of the two emptinesses, the three natures, or the transformation of the basis; the Yogācāra treatise-corpus (Baifa → Thirty Verses → Twenty Verses → Madhyānta-vibhāga → Mahāyāna-saṃgraha → Cheng weishi lun) has no direct treatise-correspondence here (the sense “the everyday is the other-dependent” at register 3 is a mirroring, not a peg on any one treatise). 〔Convention: list only what is genuinely pertinent; no forced pegging — linkage, not padding.〕
  • Stands in relation to the main body (from division 2, Subhūti’s request) as “prologue-of-occasion to main teaching.”

8 · East–West Observation (Western perspective · observation, not adjudication)

  • The everyday of the prologue (begging, spreading the seat) ↔ the “life-world” of Western phenomenology (Husserl’s Lebenswelt): the West too locates meaning in the ordinary; Yogācāra goes one step further — the everyday (the other-dependent) is the very locus of the perfectly-accomplished, not something to be transcended and sought elsewhere.
  • “Thus have I heard” ↔ orality and scriptural authority in Western Buddhology (the witness-form, Ānanda’s recitation at the council, oral tradition becoming text): the West largely reads this as a historiographic frame (who composed it, when the text was fixed); the ancient masters read it as the “prologue-of-witness” (to give rise to faith). One and the same line — for one a question of record, for the other a ground of faith.
  • The point of the observation: the West tends to take the prologue as a literary frame; the ancient masters (Zhiyi) take the prologue as a contemplative gate, “the emptiness of all dharmas as one’s seat” — frame versus contemplative gate is itself one note worth marking between East and West.
  • (This register is a Western-perspective observation; the scriptural and Yogācāra reading remains throughout the principal one, the West a secondary reference, not an adjudication. The specific literature is a matter for the researcher’s inquiry.)
