sparśaḥ katamaḥ / trika-sannipāte indriya-vikāra-paricchedaḥ / vedanā-sanniśrayadāna-karmakaḥ //
《相應部·因緣相應》SN 12.2 Vibhaṅgasutta(十二因緣分別經,CSCD):
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, phasso? Chayime, bhikkhave, phassakāyā — cakkhusamphasso, sotasamphasso, ghānasamphasso, jivhāsamphasso, kāyasamphasso, manosamphasso. Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, phasso.
英文 contact(< 拉丁 con-tāctus < tangō)為譯義對等詞,非詞源同根。
三 morpheme:①trika-sannipāta(三和 = 三 [trika] + 會聚 [sannipāta])——根、境、識三者於同一剎那會聚之事件;②indriya-vikāra(變異 = 根 [indriya] 之變動 [vikāra])——三和事件中根之被改易(前一剎那未起此境,現剎那已現此相);③pariccheda(分別 = 辨識、判別)——對此變異之識別、立為「此境而非彼境」之認知結界動作。
其他英譯選擇之考慮:Impingement(Bhikkhu Bodhi 用以譯 Vism 「業」之 saṅghaṭṭana)較貼 vikāra 一面但不及全幅;Sense-impression(部分上座部譯界用)過於偏向感官-perception,亦不及思/意之 manosamphasso 一支;Concurrence(最近 trika-sannipāte 之語感)準確但偏文言、不日常。
Sanskrit √spṛś and Pāli phassa (< phusati) both mean "to touch" — the verbal action of contact between sentient capacity and its object. Unlike śraddhā (#19), where Indo-European comparative grammar yields a clean Latin cognate (crēdō), √spṛś lacks robust PIE reconstruction. The IE word-family for "touch" is fragmented across daughter languages: Latin tangō "to touch" descends from a different root (PIE *teh₂g-), as does Greek thigganō (PIE *dʰeyǵh-). The Indic spṛśati and the Romance / Germanic tangō-family are not cognate — they are independent lexical clusters within the IE phylum. Conservative position: spṛś is an Indo-Iranian inheritance whose deeper IE prehistory remains unclear. The English word contact (Latin con-tāctus < tangō) is therefore a translational equivalent, not a cognate one. The note matters because the etymological pull of the English term toward "physical contact between bodies" is misleading; sparśa in Yogācāra usage names a cognitive event, not a tactile one — the meeting of faculty, object, and consciousness, not skin against surface.
Sparśa is the second of the five universal mental factors (sarvatraga / 遍行五) in Yogācāra, present in every moment of mind, wholesome or not, conscious or sub-conscious. Asaṅga's Abhidharma-samuccaya defines sparśa by three Sanskrit terms in sequence — trika-sannipāta (the meeting of three: faculty, object, consciousness), indriya-vikāra (the modification of the faculty), and pariccheda (the discrimination of that modification) — with its karman (function) being to provide the foundation for vedanā (feeling, →#11). Xuanzang's Cheng Weishi Lun renders this as 「三和分別變異」, a morpheme-by-morpheme calque preserving the original three-term structure intact. The Yogācāra extension — that sparśa serves as the basis not only for vedanā but also for saṃjñā (perception, →#12) and cetanā (volition, →#13) — is sourced in Cheng Weishi Lun via citation of the Qi-jin-jing (起盡經) and is structurally underwritten by the canonical Āgama formula (see Cross-tradition convergence). Sparśa's position upstream of vedanā / saṃjñā / cetanā makes it the architectural seam at which the cognitive moment crystallizes from bare meeting into felt-tone, recognition, and intent.
Both traditions converge — across separate transmission lines, in different languages — on a single characterizing image: concurrence of three. Asaṅga writes trika-sannipāte in Sanskrit; Visuddhimagga XIV.134 names sannipāta as phassa's paccupaṭṭhāna (manifestation) in Pāli. The image is not "an external object impinging on a passive sense" but a tri-fold assembly: faculty, object, and consciousness arising together at a single moment, with the three constituting contact rather than producing it. Saṃyuktāgama 273 — the Chinese parallel of the SN 12.2 family — makes the downstream chain explicit: 「緣眼、色,生眼識,三事和合觸,觸俱生受、想、思」 ("conditioned by eye and form, eye-consciousness arises; the three concurring is contact; contact, co-arising, brings forth feeling, perception, intention"). The Yogācāra elaboration that sparśa is the basis for vedanā / saṃjñā / cetanā is therefore not sectarian innovation; it is a reading already explicit in the Āgama base layer. Both trika-sannipāta and Pāli sannipāta are technical terms preserved through different transmission lines from a shared sutta-level core — this is a 共傳 (shared-canon) doctrine in the strongest sense the corpus offers, with both the image (concurrence-of-three) and the downstream chain (contact → feeling / perception / intention) attested in both Sanskrit Yogācāra and Pāli Theravāda.
Because sparśa is the sixth link of dependent origination — immediately upstream of vedanā (the seventh) — it is precisely where contemplative attention can interrupt the unfolding of grasping. Vism XIV.134 names the padaṭṭhāna (proximate cause) as āpātha-gata-visaya, "an objective field that has come into focus." Each instant of contact carries forward through a conditioned chain — modification of faculty becomes determination of object becomes felt-tone becomes craving — but the carrying forward is conditioned, not necessary. Resting attention at the moment of bare meeting, before the felt-tone solidifies into liking or aversion, is to find the seam at which dependent origination becomes practicable rather than merely theoretical. The AN 6.63 Nibbedhika-sutta makes the structural claim explicit: Phasso, bhikkhave, kammānaṃ nidāna-sambhavo — "contact, monks, is the originating cause of actions." Where the practitioner can place attention precisely at sparśa, the entire chain of kamma-formation is illuminated rather than enacted blindly.
Contact — at the concurrence of the three (faculty, object, consciousness), the discrimination of the faculty's modification: this is its nature. To provide the basis on which feeling, perception, and intention arise: this is its function.
