05The Early Niànfó Sūtra Before the WordThe first Buddhist scripture to enter China—the Sūtra in Forty-Two Sections (四十二章經, T0784), traditionally ascribed to Kāśyapa Mātaṅga (迦葉摩騰) and Dharmaratna (竺法蘭) and translated at the White Horse Monastery in Luoyang in 67 CE—does not contain the compound term niànfó (念佛, "buddhānussati") even once across its forty-two chapters. Yet in the same scripture we find niàndào (念道, recollection of the path) three times, niàn-fēicháng (念非常, recollection of impermanence) three times, recollection of the four great elements within the body once (a kāyagatāsati echo), mental recollection of the precepts once (a sīlānussati echo), and "between breaths" once (a double echo of both ānāpāna-sati and maraṇa-sati). The vocabulary distribution thus covers five of the six standard recollection objects—missing only buddhānussati itself.
