In the preceding chapter, the Buddha distinguished, level by level, all the qualities gained by hearing the teaching of the Lifespan. At the end, he spoke of the person who hears the sutra after his cessation and gives rise to a mind of joyful acceptance. In this chapter, Maitreya asks the question for us: how much merit is a single thought of joyful acceptance worth?
The Buddha begins his answer at the far end of a chain of transmission. After the Tathāgata’s cessation, someone hears the sutra and joyfully accepts it, leaves the Dharma assembly, and explains it to relatives and friends as fully as possible. Those who hear it joyfully accept it and pass the teaching on. In this way, one person transmits it to another until it reaches the fiftieth person. Consider that fiftieth person. This person did not hear the sutra directly within the assembly, but hears one verse after it has passed through fifty hands and gives rise to joyful acceptance. The Buddha says that this single thought surpasses the merit of someone who, for a full eighty years, gives the seven precious substances, elephants, horses, carriages, and palaces to every sentient being throughout four hundred trillion incalculable worlds, and then teaches them until all attain arhatship. Even that utmost material giving joined to Dharma-giving does not equal one part in hundreds of thousands of millions of this single thought. How much more so for the person who first hears and joyfully accepts the sutra within the assembly.
The Buddha then unfolds joyful acceptance into ordinary actions. Deliberately going to a monastery to hear the sutra brings elephant and horse carriages and celestial palaces in a future life. Inviting someone to sit and listen, or sharing half of one’s seat, brings the seats of Śakra, Brahmā, and a wheel-turning sage-king. Saying to another person, “There is a sutra named the Lotus; we can go and listen together,” brings freedom from diseases of the mouth and tongue, a dignified countenance, the fragrance of a blue lotus issuing from the mouth, and the opportunity to see buddhas and hear the Dharma life after life. How much more so for one who listens single-mindedly, teaches others, and practices in accordance with the teaching.
The heart of this chapter, then, lies in joyful acceptance. The Buddha deliberately chooses the shallowest single thought within trust and understanding and the last link in the chain of transmission to reveal the weight of this sutra. If even the echo remaining at the fiftieth hand brings merit such as this, the depth of the source can be known. This is also the most ordinary gateway after the Buddha’s cessation. One need not ascend a seat to teach the Dharma. Hear and rejoice; rejoice and pass it on. With the simple words “we can go and listen together,” the Dharma continues to move through the world.
Enter this chapter and see how the Buddha unfolds immeasurable and boundless merit from one thought of joyful acceptance, half a seat, and one invitation to listen. In the next chapter, The Qualities of the Dharma Teacher, the Buddha will explain how the six faculties are purified for one who properly receives, upholds, reads, recites, explains, and writes this sutra.

Maitreya Asks · The Merit of Joyful Acceptance
At that time, Maitreya Bodhisattva Mahāsattva—a great bodhisattva—addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One! If good men and good women hear this Saddharmapuṇḍarīka and joyfully accept it—following what they have heard and giving rise to joy in their hearts—how much merit will they obtain?” He then spoke in verse:
“After the World-Honored One has entered cessation,
if someone hears this sutra
and is able to joyfully accept it,
how much merit will that person obtain?”
Fiftyfold Transmission · Joyful Acceptance Passed On
At that time, the Buddha told Maitreya Bodhisattva Mahāsattva: “Ajita—another name of Maitreya! After the Tathāgata has entered cessation, suppose monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, and other wise people, whether old or young, hear this sutra and joyfully accept it. They leave the Dharma assembly and go elsewhere—perhaps to a monastery, an open and quiet place, a city, a street or lane, a village, or fields in the countryside. In accordance with what they heard, they explain it as fully as they are able to their parents, relatives within the clan, good friends, and acquaintances. Those people hear it, joyfully accept it, and in turn go on to teach others. Others hear it and likewise joyfully accept it, then pass the teaching on again. In this way, one person transmits it to another until it reaches the fiftieth person.
The Great Benefactor Simile · Giving for Eighty Years and Then Leading All to Fruition
“Ajita! I will now explain the merit of joyful acceptance obtained by that fiftieth good man or good woman. You should listen well. Suppose that throughout four hundred trillion asaṃkhyeya—incalculably many—worlds there are sentient beings in the six destinations—devas, humans, asuras, hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals—and born in the four ways: beings born from eggs, from wombs, from moisture, or by transformation; those with form and those without form; those with perception and those without perception; those neither with perception nor without perception; those with no feet, two feet, four feet, or many feet—in short, every being counted among sentient beings. Suppose a person seeking merit supplies every one of them with whatever source of enjoyment each desires. To each sentient being, that person gives enough gold, silver, lapis lazuli, giant clamshell, agate, coral, amber, and other wondrous precious substances to fill all of Jambudvīpa, the southern continent where we live. The person also gives elephants, horses, carriages, palaces, towers made of the seven precious substances, and other such things.
“After this great benefactor has given in this way for a full eighty years, this thought arises: ‘I have given these sentient beings sources of enjoyment according to whatever each desired. Yet they have all grown frail and old, passed the age of eighty, with white hair and wrinkled faces. They will die before long. I should train and guide them with the Buddha-Dharma.’ The benefactor then gathers all these beings, proclaims the transformative teaching of the Buddha-Dharma, reveals it, instructs them, brings them benefit, and gladdens them. All at once, they attain the paths of stream-entry, once-return, non-return, and arhatship—the four fruits of the śrāvaka path. They exhaust all contaminating outflows, the afflictions; they all attain mastery in profound meditation; and they possess the eight liberations, the eight meditative states that release them from bonds. What do you think? Would the merit obtained by this great benefactor be great or not?”
Maitreya addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One! This person’s merit would be exceedingly great, immeasurable and boundless. Even if this benefactor only gave every source of enjoyment to those sentient beings, the merit would already be immeasurable. How much more so after enabling them to attain the fruit of arhatship.”
Comparison Reveals Supremacy · Joyful Acceptance of One Verse Surpasses the Benefactor
The Buddha told Maitreya: “I now tell you clearly: this person gives every source of enjoyment to the beings in the six destinations throughout four hundred trillion asaṃkhyeya worlds and also enables them to attain the fruit of arhatship. Yet the merit obtained does not equal the merit of the fiftieth person, who hears and joyfully accepts even one verse of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka. It does not equal one hundredth, one thousandth, or even one part in hundreds of thousands of millions of that merit. The difference cannot be known even through calculation or simile.
“Ajita! The merit of this fiftieth person, who hears the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka after it has been transmitted from one person to another and joyfully accepts it, is still immeasurable, boundless, and incalculable. How much more so for the person who hears it directly in the assembly at the very beginning and joyfully accepts it. That person’s merit is more excellent still—immeasurable, boundless, incalculable, and beyond comparison.
The Merit of Going to a Monastery to Hear the Sutra
“Furthermore, Ajita! Suppose that, for the sake of this sutra, someone goes to a monastery and listens and receives it for only a moment, whether seated or standing. Through this merit, in the next life that person will obtain fine and wondrous elephant carriages, horse-drawn carriages, human-borne palanquins adorned with precious substances, and even celestial palaces in which to travel.
The Merit of Inviting Another to Sit and Sharing One’s Seat
“Again, suppose someone is seated where the Dharma is being taught and another person arrives. The first person encourages the newcomer to sit and listen, or shares half of the seat so that the newcomer may sit. Through this merit, in the next life that person will obtain the seat of Śakra, lord of the Heaven of the Thirty-Three; the seat of a Brahmā king; or the seat of a wheel-turning sage-king.
The Merit of Encouraging Another to Go and Listen · Marks and Signs Life after Life
“Ajita! Again, suppose someone tells another person: ‘There is a sutra named the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka. We can go and listen to it together.’ The other person accepts that encouragement and listens for even a moment. Through the merit obtained by the person who offered the encouragement, in the next life that person will be born in the same place as bodhisattvas who possess dhāraṇī, the retentive power that holds teachings without forgetting them, and will have keen faculties and wisdom.
“For hundreds of thousands of millions of lives, that person will never be mute. The breath will not be foul. The tongue will always be without disease, and the mouth will also be without disease. The teeth will not be stained and black, will not be yellow, and will not be sparse. They will neither be chipped nor fall out; they will not be uneven and will not be crooked. The lips will not droop downward or curl and shrink upward; they will not be coarse or rough and will have no sores or eruptions. They will not be broken or damaged and will not be distorted or slanted. They will not be thick or large and will not be dark. There will be no repulsive feature of any kind. The nose will not be flat and collapsed and will not be bent or twisted. The complexion will not be dark; the face will not be narrow and long or sunken and misshapen. There will be no feature whatsoever that is not pleasing to behold.
“The lips, tongue, and teeth will all be dignified and beautiful. The nose will be long, high, and straight; the face will be full and well formed; the eyebrows will be high and long; the forehead will be broad, even, and straight; and every human feature will be complete. Wherever this person is born, life after life, this person will see buddhas, hear the Dharma, and trustfully receive the Buddha’s instruction.”
Concluding Exhortation · How Much More for Listening, Teaching, and Practicing Single-Mindedly
“Ajita! Consider this well: merely encouraging one person to go and hear the Dharma brings merit such as this. How much more so for one who single-mindedly listens to the teaching, explains it, reads and recites it, distinguishes and explains it for others within the great assembly, and practices in accordance with what the sutra teaches?”
The Buddha Proclaims the Meaning Again in Verse
At that time, the World-Honored One wished to proclaim this meaning again, and spoke in verse:
“If someone within a Dharma assembly
is able to hear this sutra,
even so little as a single verse,
joyfully accepts it and teaches it to others,
and in this way it is taught in turn,
until it reaches the fiftieth person,
the merit obtained by that final person—
I will now explain it distinctly.
“Suppose there is a great benefactor
who supplies immeasurable sentient beings
for a full eighty years
with whatever each one desires.
Seeing their signs of decline and age—
their hair white and their faces wrinkled,
their teeth sparse and their bodies withered—
the benefactor thinks that they will die before long:
‘I should now teach them
and enable them to attain the fruits of the path.’
“Then, through skillful means, the benefactor teaches them
the true Dharma of nirvāṇa:
‘Nothing in the world is firm or lasting;
it is like foam on water, bubbles, and a heat-haze.
All of you should therefore
quickly give rise to a mind of disillusionment and release.’
When those people hear this Dharma,
they all attain arhatship
and possess in full the six supernormal powers,
the three knowledges—knowledge of former lives,
the divine eye, and the exhaustion of contaminants—
and the eight liberations.
“Yet the last, the fiftieth person,
hears a single verse and joyfully accepts it.
That person’s merit surpasses the benefactor’s;
no simile can describe it.
The merit of one who hears it in such a chain
is still immeasurable.
How much more so for one who first hears it
within the Dharma assembly and joyfully accepts it.
“Suppose someone encourages one person
and leads that person to hear the Lotus Sutra,
saying, ‘This sutra is profound and wondrous,
difficult to encounter through tens of millions of aeons.’
The person accepts the encouragement and goes to listen,
hearing it for even a moment.
The recompense of merit for the one who gave that encouragement—
I will now explain it distinctly.
“Life after life, that person will be without ailments of the mouth;
the teeth will not be sparse, yellow, or black.
The lips will not be thick, curled, or damaged;
there will be no repulsive feature.
The tongue will not be dry, black, or short;
the nose will be high, long, and straight.
The forehead will be broad, even, and straight;
every feature of the face will be upright and dignified.
People will delight in seeing that person;
the breath will have no foul odor.
The fragrance of an utpala flower, a blue lotus,
will always issue from that person’s mouth.
“If someone deliberately goes to a monastery,
wishing to hear the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka,
and hears it for even a moment with joy,
I will now explain that person’s merit.
Later born among devas or humans,
that person will obtain wondrous elephant and horse carriages,
palanquins adorned with precious substances,
and celestial palaces in which to travel.
“If, where the Dharma is being taught,
someone encourages another person to sit and hear the sutra,
through the causes and conditions of this merit
that person will obtain the seats of Śakra, Brahmā, and a wheel-turning sage-king.
How much more so for one who listens single-mindedly,
explains the meaning and intent of the sutra,
and practices in accordance with what it teaches:
that person’s merit cannot be measured.”
At the end of the preceding chapter, the Chapter on Distinguishing Qualities, the Buddha speaks of those who, after the Tathāgata’s cessation, hear this sutra without disparaging it and give rise to a mind of joyful acceptance. But how much is that one thought of joyful acceptance really worth? In this chapter, Maitreya asks the question for us: how much merit does one gain by hearing and joyfully accepting this Lotus Sutra? The Buddha’s answer is unexpected. He does not speak directly of the merit of the first person to hear the sutra. Instead, he takes us to the far end of a long chain of transmission: when the teaching has reached the fiftieth person, how much remains in that person’s single thought of joyful acceptance? We will follow the sequence of the sutra and make every meaning in the chapter clear; only at the end will we add a brief reflection from the Consciousness-Only tradition.
Fiftyfold Transmission: A Chain That Passes Joyful Acceptance On
The Buddha tells Maitreya: after the Tathāgata has entered cessation, suppose disciples of the fourfold assembly or other wise people, whether old or young, hear this sutra and give rise to joyful acceptance. They leave the Dharma assembly and go elsewhere—to a monastery, an open place, a city street or lane, a village, or the fields—and, in accordance with what they heard, explain it as fully as they are able to parents, relatives, good friends, and acquaintances. Those people hear it and joyfully accept it, then go on to teach others. The next people hear it, joyfully accept it, and pass the teaching on again. In this way, one person transmits it to another until it reaches the fiftieth. Notice the shape of this chain. With every hand through which it passes, the listener is one level farther from the original seat of teaching. By the fiftieth hand, what remains is an echo of an echo. The fiftieth person was not in the assembly—the sutra later contrasts this person with “the person who first hears it within the assembly and joyfully accepts it”—but hears only a fragment transmitted through fifty people from the mouth of a relative or friend. The Buddha deliberately chooses this person at the farthest end and says: I will now explain the merit of joyful acceptance obtained by that fiftieth good man or good woman; listen well.
The Great Benefactor Simile: Heaping “Merit” to Its Utmost Extreme
To explain the merit of the fiftieth person, the Buddha first establishes a comparison and heaps it up to the furthest limit imaginable. Suppose a great benefactor faces beings of the six destinations and four kinds of birth throughout four hundred trillion incalculable worlds—born from eggs, wombs, moisture, or transformation; with form or without form; with perception or without perception; with no feet, two feet, four feet, or many feet; in short, every being counted among sentient beings. In accordance with whatever they desire, the benefactor gives each one sources of enjoyment: enough gold, silver, lapis lazuli, and the seven precious substances to fill the southern continent where we live, together with elephant and horse carriages and palaces and towers made of the seven precious substances. This giving continues for a full eighty years. It is material giving taken to its utmost. The benefactor then reflects: these beings have all grown old and frail, with white hair and wrinkled faces, and will die before long; I should train and guide them with the Buddha-Dharma. Gathering them together, the benefactor teaches the Dharma and all at once enables them to attain stream-entry, once-return, non-return, and arhatship, to exhaust every contaminating outflow, and to possess the eight liberations. This adds Dharma-giving taken to its utmost. The benefactor has given not only happiness but liberation. The Buddha asks Maitreya: is this benefactor’s merit great or not? Maitreya answers that it is exceedingly great, immeasurable and boundless. The material giving alone would already bring immeasurable merit; how much more so after enabling the sentient beings to attain arhatship.
The Comparison: Joyful Acceptance of One Verse Surpasses All of This
The Buddha then speaks the chapter’s most startling sentence: all the merit of this great benefactor does not equal the merit of the fiftieth person, who hears and joyfully accepts one verse of the Lotus Sutra. It does not equal one hundredth, one thousandth, or even one part in hundreds of thousands of millions of that merit; no calculation or simile can express the difference. Eighty years of material giving, followed by Dharma-giving that enables immeasurably many sentient beings to realize the four fruits, does not equal the movement in the heart of the person at the fiftieth hand who hears one verse and joyfully accepts it. Why is this so? The sutra itself places the answer in the Dharma that is joyfully accepted. The great benefactor gives sources of enjoyment and the fruit of the two vehicles. The beings are taught that nothing in the world is firm or lasting, that it is like foam on water, bubbles, and a heat-haze, and that they should quickly give rise to disillusionment and release. This is a Dharma of becoming disillusioned with the world and ending one’s own birth and death. What the single verse of the Lotus holds, by contrast, is the One Vehicle in which all shall become buddhas. The thought of joyful acceptance follows the path to buddhahood; when that thought comes to rest in the heart, it is a seed of the Buddha’s fruit. The directions differ, and therefore their measures cannot be compared: on one side is a bounded fruit, on the other an unbounded cause. The Buddha immediately raises the inferior to indicate the superior. The merit of the fiftieth person who hears the sutra through transmission and joyfully accepts it is still immeasurable, boundless, and incalculable. How much more so for the person who first hears it within the assembly and joyfully accepts it. Following the chain back toward its source, the nearer one comes to the source, the more excellent the merit; the thought of the person who first hears directly within the assembly is still further beyond comparison.
Four Forms of Merit from Hearing the Sutra and Encouraging Others to Hear It
Once the comparison is established, the Buddha unfolds joyful acceptance into four actions visible in ordinary life and explains the merit of each. First, someone deliberately goes to a monastery for the sake of this sutra and listens and receives it for only a moment, whether seated or standing. Through this merit, in the next life that person obtains fine elephant and horse carriages, palanquins adorned with precious substances, and even celestial palaces in which to travel. Second, while seated where the Dharma is being taught, someone invites a newcomer to sit and listen, or shares half of the seat. In the next life, that person obtains the seat of Śakra, a Brahmā king, or a wheel-turning sage-king. One gives up half a seat; the recompense is the most honored seats in the three realms. Third, someone says to another person: there is a sutra named the Lotus; we can go and listen together. The other person accepts the encouragement and listens for even a moment. In the next life, the person who offered the encouragement is born in the same place as bodhisattvas who possess retentive power, has keen faculties and wisdom, and through hundreds of thousands of millions of lives has no disease of the mouth or tongue, no stained or blackened teeth, dignified lips and nose, and a full and well-formed face. Wherever born, that person sees buddhas, hears the Dharma, and trustfully receives the teaching. Encouraging one person to hear the Dharma once leaves its recompense upon one’s appearance life after life. Look closely at the sutra’s list: every item lies around the mouth, tongue, lips, teeth, nose, and face—the very place from which the invitation to hear was spoken. Fourth, the Buddha concludes by asking us to consider: if merely encouraging one person to go and hear the Dharma brings merit such as this, how much more so for one who listens single-mindedly, reads and recites the sutra, distinguishes and explains it for others in the great assembly, and practices in accordance with the teaching. The merit of encouraging another to listen is already such; the merit of listening oneself with one mind, teaching others, and practicing what is taught is still beyond measure.
The Verse Proclaims the Meaning Again: From the Benefactor to the Fiftieth Person
At the end, the World-Honored One proclaims the meaning again in thirty-six lines of verse. The verse follows the framework of the prose once more: hearing the sutra in a Dharma assembly, even so little as one verse; joyfully accepting it and teaching it to others; transmitting it in turn until the fiftieth person; the great benefactor supplying immeasurable sentient beings for a full eighty years; seeing their signs of age and decline; and teaching them the true Dharma of nirvāṇa—that nothing in the world is firm or lasting, but is like foam on water, bubbles, and a heat-haze—until all attain arhatship, the six supernormal powers, the three knowledges, and the eight liberations. Yet the last, the fiftieth person, hears one verse and joyfully accepts it: that person’s merit surpasses the benefactor’s and cannot be described by any simile. The verse adds one fragrance not found in the prose. For one who encourages another to hear the sutra, the breath is without foulness life after life, and the fragrance of a blue lotus always issues from the mouth that once encouraged another to hear the Dharma. The verse closes with the concluding exhortation: how much more so for one who listens single-mindedly, explains the sutra’s meaning and intent, and practices in accordance with its teaching. That person’s merit cannot be measured.
This Chapter’s Place within the Sutra as a Whole
The Chapter on Distinguishing Qualities concerns attainment in the assembly upon hearing the teaching of the lifespan and the four levels of trust and understanding. The present chapter draws out the shallowest thread among them—joyful acceptance—and unfolds it on its own. That shallowness is precisely the chapter’s profound intent. The Buddha deliberately takes the last link in the chain of trust and understanding, the fiftieth person, and the lowest step among the gateways of practice, a single thought of joyful acceptance, to reveal the power of this sutra. Even the echo remaining after fifty hands, even one thought of joy before practice has begun, brings merit surpassing the utmost of eighty years of material giving and Dharma-giving. The weight of the sutra itself then needs no further statement. From the threshold, one knows the inner hall: if the threshold is already such, the depth within can be understood. This is the power of raising the inferior to indicate the superior. It is also the most ordinary gateway after the Buddha’s cessation. One need not ascend a seat to teach the Dharma or possess a profound understanding of its meaning. Hear and rejoice; rejoice and pass it on. As one person transmits it to another, the Dharma continues to move through the world.
Seen Through the Eyes of Consciousness-Only: The Cause of Following in Accord and Gladness, and the Incomparable Direction
Everything above is the Chapter on the Qualities of Joyful Acceptance in its own meaning. The Consciousness-Only mirror borrowed here, transmitted by Kuiji of Cien, sees very little in this chapter: the ancient commentary is exceedingly brief and consists almost entirely of divisions and explanations of words. Consciousness-Only is not the source of the Lotus; it is only another set of eyes. Yet its few words bring two points into view. First is its explanation of joyful acceptance. Following means following in accord, and joy means gladness: when body and mind follow in accord, deep gladness arises; taking this as the cause, the fruit of qualities arises. The merit of joyful acceptance does not lie in some outward action that has been performed, but in the body and mind truly following and delighting in that Dharma. This following and delight are the cause; the qualities are the fruit. The object joyfully accepted can arise through all three forms of wisdom—hearing, reflection, and cultivation. This chapter begins from hearing and therefore belongs to the gateway of hearing the Dharma. In the treatise tradition inherited by Cien, this chapter is linked to the preceding one, for both address Maitreya: the preceding chapter explains realization, trust, and offering, while this chapter explains hearing the Dharma, because hearing from another can give rise to joyful acceptance.
The second point is why the comparison holds. Kuiji gives only one sentence of judgment. A single thought of joyful acceptance will attain awakening, and in the future the sentient beings transformed through it will multiply without end; therefore its merit is greater. Enabling others to attain arhatship cannot bring them to buddhahood or enable them broadly to deliver sentient beings; therefore its merit is lesser. The cause of the great vehicle surpasses the fruit of the lesser vehicle. A single thought of joyful acceptance is a cause directed toward the Buddha’s fruit: the fruit has not yet been accomplished, but its direction is unbounded. Arhatship is an accomplished fruit: the fruit has been accomplished, but its scope of deliverance is bounded. As for why the number fifty is used, Kuiji does not say. Tiantai counts horizontally and vertically through the fourfold assemblies and the various teachings to make fifty, and also says that the final person has only personal understanding and lacks the quality of teaching others; this is taking the lower to reveal the higher. Sanlun instead judges the superiority and inferiority of direct and transmitted hearing, and classifies material giving as lower, Dharma-giving that brings attainment of the two vehicles as middle, and joyful acceptance that leads to buddhahood as higher. Each number has its explanation and each judgment its own character, yet all three point to one place: joyful acceptance is superior because the Dharma joyfully accepted is the Dharma that leads to buddhahood. The three are recorded side by side without adjudication, each kept in its own place.

慈恩·窺基《玄贊》T34n1723(鏡骨幹)
天台·智顗《文句》T34n1718(旁證)
三論·吉藏《法華義疏》T34n1721(旁證)

This chapter carries forward the occasion of joyful acceptance after the Buddha’s cessation at the end of the Chapter on Distinguishing Qualities and unfolds the merit of a single thought of joyful acceptance. Maitreya asks: how much merit does one obtain by hearing and joyfully accepting this Saddharmapuṇḍarīka? The Buddha answers with a fiftyfold transmission. After the Tathāgata’s cessation, one who hears and joyfully accepts the sutra leaves the Dharma assembly and explains it, as fully as one is able, to parents, relatives, and good friends. Those who hear it joyfully accept it and pass the teaching on, until in this way it reaches a fiftieth person. The Buddha measures the merit through the simile of a great benefactor: someone gives every source of enjoyment to beings of the six destinations and four kinds of birth throughout four hundred trillion asaṃkhyeya worlds for a full eighty years, then enables them all to attain arhatship. This merit does not equal even one part in hundreds of thousands of millions of the merit of the fiftieth person who hears and joyfully accepts one verse of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka; how much greater still is the merit of the person who first hears and joyfully accepts it within the assembly. The chapter next explains four forms of merit from hearing the sutra and encouraging others to hear it: going to a monastery and listening for a moment, with elephant and horse carriages and celestial palaces as the recompense; inviting another to sit and listen or sharing one’s seat, with the seats of Śakra, Brahmā, and a wheel-turning sage-king as the recompense; encouraging one person to go and listen, bringing birth in the same place as bodhisattvas who possess dhāraṇī, the marks and signs of the mouth, tongue, nose, and face life after life, and the opportunity to see buddhas and hear the Dharma; and, beyond these, listening, explaining, reading, reciting, and practicing single-mindedly in accordance with the teaching. Kuiji of the Cien tradition reads this chapter as “hearing the Dharma,” the fourth of the five gateways of Dharma-power: hearing from another can give rise to joyful acceptance. He explains joyful acceptance as the body and mind following in accord and giving rise to deep gladness. His judgment in the comparison is that the great-vehicle cause directed toward awakening surpasses the lesser-vehicle fruit of enabling others to attain arhatship. Zhiyi of Tiantai judges that the fiftieth person is an extended explanation of the “first stage” among the five stages after cessation in the preceding chapter, and reveals the superiority of initial joyful acceptance through five explanations of the title and a comparison of merit. Jizang of Sanlun places this chapter as “the disciples’ lower-grade qualities,” from the arousal of resolve through the stage of the ten kinds of trust, and judges the comparison through three grades: material giving as lower, Dharma-giving as middle, and joyful acceptance that leads to buddhahood as higher. The three readings are recorded side by side without adjudication.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
| Outline system | Placement of this chapter |
|---|---|
“Chapter 18, The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance” (卷六;〔T09n0262 0046b21〕起)· carries forward joyful acceptance after cessation in the Chapter on Distinguishing Qualities and unfolds its merit |
“three gateways of analysis: first, the reason for its coming; second, the explanation of its name; third, the resolution of a difficulty” 〔0836a28〕. The threefold reason for its coming is: ① among the latter six chapters on the people able to practice within the seven chapters on learning and practicing the transmission, 「此品明傍修行之福,故此品興也」 tr. “this chapter explains the merit of ancillary practice; therefore this chapter arises” 〔0836b02〕; ② among the fruits not yet fulfilled within the fruit of the One Vehicle, 「此品明傍修隨喜福果多小」 tr. “this chapter explains the measure of the meritorious fruit from the ancillary cultivation of joyful acceptance” 〔0836b04〕; ③ according to the five gateways of Dharma-power in the 《法華論》 Treatise on the Lotus Sutra, 「此為第四聞法…… “this is the fourth, hearing the Dharma … Because hearing from another can give rise to joyful acceptance, it is called hearing the Dharma. This chapter explains it broadly; therefore the chapter comes” 〔0836b06〕. The chapter text is divided into two: first Maitreya’s request, in prose and verse, and then the World-Honored One’s answer 〔0836b16〕. The answer has three parts: the comparison posed as a question; Maitreya’s reply; and the Buddha’s confirming statement 〔0836b19〕 |
“Explanation of the Chapter on the Qualities of Joyful Acceptance” begins at 〔T34n1718 0138b17〕. It judges that the fiftieth person in this chapter is the “first stage” among the five stages after cessation in the preceding chapter: 「第五十人是初品之初,初但有一念理解,但有一念慶己慶他」 tr. “The fiftieth person is at the beginning of the first stage. At first there is only a single thought of understanding, only a single thought of celebrating oneself and celebrating others” 〔0138c02〕. It carries forward the preceding chapter: 「前品已格四人不說初者,彌勒承機問出」 tr. “The preceding chapter already compared the four people but did not speak of the first; Maitreya, taking up the occasion, asks and brings it forth” 〔0138c20〕. It explains the name in five ways, each concluding 「故名隨喜功德品」 tr. “therefore it is named the Chapter on the Qualities of Joyful Acceptance” 〔0138b18 起〕 |
“Chapter 18, The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance” begins at 〔T34n1721 0612c05〕. It judges that the next three chapters “broadly explain the qualities of keeping the sutra, encouraging and exhorting its transmission” in three sections: 「初隨喜品明弟子下品功德」 tr. “first, the Chapter on Joyful Acceptance explains the disciples’ lower-grade qualities” (the Chapter on the Qualities of the Dharma Teacher is the middle grade, and the Chapter on Bodhisattva Never Disparaging is the higher grade) 〔0612c07〕. In terms of stages, 「隨喜人從發心至十信位」 tr. “the person of joyful acceptance extends from the arousal of resolve through the stage of the ten kinds of trust” 〔0612c10〕. Its reason for coming carries forward the end of the preceding chapter: 「上品末說如來滅後若聞此經不生毀呰起隨喜心,當知是為深信解相;今欲說其功德,故有此品來也」 tr. “At the end of the preceding chapter it was taught that, after the Tathāgata’s cessation, if one hears this sutra, does not give rise to disparagement, and gives rise to a mind of joyful acceptance, one should know this to be the mark of deep trust and understanding. Now the text wishes to explain that person’s qualities; therefore this chapter comes” 〔0612c21〕 |
II. Alternate Translations · Collation of the Three Translations
This chapter has three Chinese translations: Kumārajīva’s T262, 〈隨喜功德品第十八〉 tr. “Chapter 18, The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance”; Dharmarakṣa’s T263 《正法華經》 True Dharma Lotus, 〈勸助品第十七〉 tr. “Chapter 17, Encouragement and Assistance” 〔T09n0263 0118a01〕; and the supplemented edition T264, 〈隨喜功德品第十七〉 tr. “Chapter 17, The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance” 〔T09n0264 0180c05〕. Dharmarakṣa’s corresponding chapter is confirmed as 勸助品 “Chapter on Encouragement and Assistance”: 勸助 is an old translation of joyful acceptance. Within the chapter, 勸助 occurs eleven times and 代喜 four times, while the term 隨喜 has zero occurrences. This is a different system of translation, not an absence of the meaning. The chapter numbers differ—Chapter 18 in Kumārajīva and Chapter 17 in Dharmarakṣa and the supplemented edition—because Kumārajīva’s translation makes the Devadatta material into a separate chapter.
Passage One · Maitreya Asks about the Merit of Joyful Acceptance
| Version | Verbatim Chinese and translation | Source |
|---|---|---|
“At that time, Maitreya Bodhisattva Mahāsattva addressed the Buddha: ‘World-Honored One! If good men and good women hear this Saddharmapuṇḍarīka and joyfully accept it, how much merit will they obtain?’ … ‘After the World-Honored One has entered cessation, if someone hears this sutra and is able to joyfully accept it, how much merit will that person obtain?’” | T09n0262 0046b22 |
“[Identical word for word with Kumārajīva.]” | T09n0264 0180c06 |
“At that time, the great being Maitreya addressed the Buddha: ‘What merit and blessings will those who hear this sutra as it is taught obtain?’ … ‘If, upon contemplating it, they then encourage and assist, what merit and blessings will they obtain?’” | T09n0263 0118a02/0118a05 |
What the variants bear upon: the supplemented edition agrees word for word with Kumārajīva. Dharmarakṣa has 「彌勒大士」 tr. “the great being Maitreya,” rather than the alternate Chinese name 慈氏 tr. “Cishi (Maitreya),” which has zero occurrences in the chapter. It renders 「隨喜」 tr. “joyful acceptance” as 「勸助」 tr. “encouragement and assistance”; and in the verse it renders 「世尊滅度後」 tr. “after the World-Honored One has entered cessation” as 「大雄若滅度」 tr. “if the Great Hero enters cessation” 〔0118a04〕. For the fourfold assembly, it uses 「清信士、清信女」 tr. “faithful laymen and faithful laywomen,” semantic translations of layman and laywoman 〔0118a07〕.
Passage Two · The Fiftyfold Transmission (the Number “Fifty” Is Entirely Absent from Dharmarakṣa)
| Version | Verbatim Chinese and translation | Source |
|---|---|---|
“In accordance with what they heard, they explain it as fully as they are able to their parents, relatives within the clan, good friends, and acquaintances. These people hear it and joyfully accept it, then go on to teach others … In this way it is transmitted in turn until it reaches the fiftieth person.” | T09n0262 0046c01/0046c04 |
“[Identical word for word with Kumārajīva.] … In this way it is transmitted in turn until it reaches the fiftieth person.” | T09n0264 0180c14 |
“What they have heard and known is transmitted in turn. Without seeing the Dharma teacher’s majestic bearing and appearance, those who learn through transmission encourage and assist on the teacher’s behalf … Each uses what was heard to encourage and transform others in turn.” | T09n0263 0118a12/0118a14 |
What the variants bear upon (key): the supplemented edition agrees word for word with Kumārajīva. In Dharmarakṣa, 「第五十」 tr. “the fiftieth” and 「五十」 tr. “fifty” have zero occurrences in the chapter. The meaning of transmission in turn is present through 「展轉相傳」 tr. “transmitted in turn” and 「轉相勸化」 tr. “encouraging and transforming one another in turn,” but the number in 「至第五十」 tr. “until it reaches the fiftieth person” is entirely absent. Dharmarakṣa carries the comparison with 「最後」 tr. “the last”: in the verse, 「其人最後,以法教喻」 tr. “that final person teaches and instructs through the Dharma” 〔0118c11〕 and 「最後若有,值是經卷」 tr. “if the last person encounters this scripture” 〔0118c03〕. Dharmarakṣa also contains a sentence absent from Kumārajīva: 「使五道人有五蓋者通得相見」 tr. “causing people of the five paths who have the five hindrances all to be able to meet one another” 〔0118a14〕.
Passage Three · The Great Benefactor Simile (Different Translation Systems for the Four Fruits)
| Version | Verbatim Chinese and translation | Source |
|---|---|---|
“Suppose that throughout four hundred trillion asaṃkhyeya worlds there are sentient beings in the six destinations and born in the four ways … This great benefactor, after giving in this way for a full eighty years … gathers these sentient beings, proclaims the transformative teaching of the Dharma, reveals and instructs it, brings benefit and joy, and all at once enables them to attain the paths of stream-entry, once-return, non-return, and arhatship, to exhaust all contaminating outflows, to attain mastery in profound meditation, and to possess the eight liberations.” | T09n0262 0046c06/0046c13/0046c17 |
“[Identical word for word with Kumārajīva.]” | T09n0264 0180c19 |
“Across the four regions under heaven for measureless thousands of years, the beings of the six destinations have not exhausted the enclosing net … For incalculable years, whatever they seek is freely supplied in full according to their wishes … The multitude all at once tread and realize ‘trace of the Way,’ ‘going and coming,’ ‘non-return,’ and ‘non-attachment’; their contaminating outflows are exhausted, meditation is complete, and with majestic supernormal power they attain the eight gateways of liberation.” | T09n0263 0118a16/0118a23/0118a27 |
What the variants bear upon: the supplemented edition agrees word for word with Kumārajīva. Dharmarakṣa renders 「四百萬億阿僧祇世界」 tr. “four hundred trillion asaṃkhyeya worlds” as 「無所千載四域天下」 tr. “across the four regions under heaven for measureless thousands of years.” The number in 「布施滿八十年」 tr. “giving for a full eighty years” has zero occurrences in the chapter: Dharmarakṣa has 「無央數歲」 tr. “incalculable years”; its signs of old age are 「年朽力弊,心用疲殆」 tr. “years decayed, strength worn down, and the activity of the mind exhausted” 〔0118a24〕, and in the verse 「頭白齒落,年老朽耄」 tr. “head white, teeth fallen out, aged, decayed, and senile” 〔0118c08〕. All four fruits are rendered semantically: 須陀洹 as 道跡, “trace of the Way”; 斯陀含 as 往來, “going and coming”; 阿那含 as 不還, “non-return”; and 阿羅漢 as 無著, “non-attachment.” The term 「阿羅漢」 tr. “arhat” has zero occurrences in the chapter. The eight liberations are 八解門, “eight gateways of liberation”; sentient beings are 黎庶, “the multitude.” The names of the four births—卵胎濕化—are absent; only beings with form and without form, with perception and without perception, and beings differing in feet are listed.
Passage Four · Comparison Reveals Supremacy
| Version | Verbatim Chinese and translation | Source |
|---|---|---|
“The merit obtained does not equal the merit of the fiftieth person, who hears and joyfully accepts one verse of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka. It does not equal one hundredth, one thousandth, or even one part in hundreds of thousands of millions of that merit … How much more so for the person who first hears it within the assembly and joyfully accepts it.” | T09n0262 0046c25/0047a01 |
“[Identical word for word with Kumārajīva.]” | T09n0264 0181a09 |
“One who hears one sentence or one verse of this sutra and encourages, assists, and rejoices on another’s behalf has merit surpassing that person’s giving. The qualities of encouraging and assisting in relation to one sentence or one verse cannot be delimited: a hundredfold, a thousandfold, ten-thousandfold, a hundred-millionfold … How much more so for seeing this scripture with one’s own eyes, hearing it with one’s own ears, and rejoicing on another’s behalf.” | T09n0263 0118b05/0118b08 |
What the variants bear upon: the supplemented edition agrees word for word with Kumārajīva. Dharmarakṣa has no anchor of 「第五十人」 tr. “the fiftieth person,” but continues the frame of “the last.” It renders 「一偈隨喜」 tr. “joyful acceptance of one verse” as 「一句一偈,勸助代喜」 tr. “one sentence or one verse, encouraging, assisting, and rejoicing on another’s behalf,” and 「最初於會中聞」 tr. “the person who first hears it within the assembly” as 「目見於此經典,耳聽代喜」 tr. “seeing this scripture with one’s own eyes, hearing it with one’s own ears, and rejoicing on another’s behalf.”
Passage Five · The Four Forms of Merit from Hearing and Encouraging Others to Hear
| Version | Verbatim Chinese and translation | Source |
|---|---|---|
“Going to a monastery and listening and receiving for a moment, whether seated or standing … one obtains fine and wondrous elephant carriages, horse-drawn carriages, palanquins adorned with precious substances, and celestial palaces in which to travel / encouraging another to sit and listen or sharing one’s seat so the other person may sit … in the next life one obtains the seat of Śakra, a Brahmā king, or a wheel-turning sage-king / telling another person, ‘There is a sutra named the Lotus; we can go and listen together’ … in the next life one is born in the same place as bodhisattvas who possess dhāraṇī.” | T09n0262 0047a03/0047a06/0047a08 |
“[Identical word for word with Kumārajīva.]” | T09n0264 0181a13 |
“If one enters a monastic dwelling wherever one goes, or enters a district town, and, whether standing or seated, is able to hear this sutra-Dharma for a time … one will always obtain naturally arisen and countless precious substances, palaces, monastic dwellings, beds, couches, seats, and immeasurably peaceful and elegant elephant and horse carriages / Śakra, Brahmā, and the Four Heavenly Kings will support, assist, guard, and attend one, and one will draw near the lion seat of a wheel-turning sage-king / suppose a son of good family proclaims: ‘There is a sutra named the True Dharma Lotus, truly worthy of reverence; we should hear and receive it together’ … one then obtains roots of virtue, will attain total retention, and will accompany the bodhisattvas life after life.” | T09n0263 0118b10/0118b15/0118b16 |
What the variants bear upon: the supplemented edition agrees word for word with Kumārajīva. Dharmarakṣa renders 僧坊 as 精舍, “monastic dwelling”; the term 僧坊 has zero occurrences. It renders 帝釋 as 天帝, “Lord of the Devas,” in the verse 「得為天帝,梵天床座」 tr. “one attains the seat of the Lord of the Devas or of Brahmā” 〔0119a14〕. The action of sharing one’s seat is absent. It renders 陀羅尼 as 總持, “total retention”; the term 陀羅尼 has zero occurrences. Its passage encouraging another to listen adds 「更相請命,若辭泥雨設懈不行」 tr. “inviting and urging one another; even if one declines because of mud or rain and is indolent and does not go,” for which Kumārajīva has no counterpart. Its negative list of bodily marks is divided differently and adds blindness, deafness, baldness, lameness, and other items 〔0118b22〕; its conclusion adds 「欲覲諸佛如願即見」 tr. “wishing to behold the buddhas, one sees them according to one’s wish” 〔0118b27〕.
Placement of the supplemented edition: the supplemented edition T264, 〈隨喜功德品第十七〉 tr. “Chapter 17, The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance,” takes over Kumārajīva word for word: the main text is extremely similar, and all thirty-six lines of verse have the same order. Its only substantive difference in wording is that Kumārajīva’s final line 「其福不可量」 tr. “that person’s merit cannot be measured” 〔T09n0262 0047c01〕 appears as 「其福不可限」 tr. “that person’s merit cannot be delimited” 〔T09n0264 0181c13〕. The remainder consists of graphic variants: 馬腦/馬瑙, 脣/唇, 匾㔸/䐔䏲, 喜/憙, and 修/脩. It is a re-edition of Kumārajīva, not a new translation. Dharmarakṣa’s T263 Chapter on Encouragement and Assistance is the true axis of alternate translation: ① the chapter title 〈勸助品〉 tr. “Chapter on Encouragement and Assistance,” with 勸助 as an old translation of joyful acceptance; ② an older translation system—勸助/代喜, 無著, 道跡, 總持, 天帝, 精舍, 清信士女, 大雄; ③ both numbers, 「第五十」 tr. “the fiftieth” and 「八十年」 tr. “eighty years,” are entirely absent, though the meaning is encompassed by 「展轉相傳……最後」 tr. “transmitted in turn … the last” and 「無央數歲」 tr. “incalculable years”; and ④ the verse is a long four-character-per-line verse whose thematic order differs.
III. Scriptural Grounds for the Consciousness-Only Meaning (the Point of the Eye)
The Consciousness-Only content in the 《玄贊》 for this chapter is nearly zero—this is one of the briefest passages in the entire commentary. Kuiji explains this chapter in only about one page 〔T34n1723 0836a27–0837a24〕. Its contents are the three gateways—the reason for its coming, the explanation of its name, and the resolution of a difficulty—followed by a section-by-section outline and two lexicographic citations from the 《玉篇》. A mechanical scan of the entire passage finds zero occurrences of every signature Consciousness-Only term in the two principal groups: the three natures, the wholly-imagined, the other-dependent, the perfectly-accomplished, the ālaya, store consciousness, transformation of the basis, the five lineages, lineage, the two obstructions, seeds, and the ten grounds. The Cien reading has three actual points, all explanations and doctrinal placements of the sutra rather than an unfolding of sectarian doctrine:
(1) Explaining “joyful acceptance”—following in accord plus gladness, with cause and fruit arising from one another 〔T34n1723 0836b09〕:
〔T34n1723 0836b09〕
tr. “Following is a name for following in accord; joy is a designation for gladness. When body and mind follow in accord, deep gladness arises. Taking this as the cause, the fruit of qualities arises.”
→ Following means that body and mind follow in accord with the Dharma heard; joy means that deep gladness arises. This joyful acceptance is the cause, and it gives rise to the fruit of qualities: this explains the four characters in the chapter title. Kuiji also judges that the object joyfully accepted extends through all three forms of wisdom: 「隨所聞思修皆生隨喜心,論經從初,但說聞故」 tr. “In relation to whatever is heard, reflected upon, or cultivated, a mind of joyful acceptance arises. The sutra-text used by the Treatise speaks only of hearing from the beginning” 〔0836b11〕. Joyful acceptance can arise through hearing, reflection, and cultivation; the sutra-text used by the Treatise on the Lotus Sutra speaks only of “hearing,” and therefore the chapter proceeds from hearing. Kuiji resolves a difficulty: this chapter also teaches the encouragement of others, so why is the chapter not named for encouraging others? “It is named from the root, because only after one joyfully accepts it oneself does one encourage others. Moreover, both are encompassed by joyful acceptance, and therefore they are combined in the name” 〔0836b13〕.
(2) “Hearing the Dharma,” fourth among the five gateways of Dharma-power—the reason for the chapter’s coming 〔T34n1723 0836b06〕: according to the five gateways of Dharma-power in Vasubandhu’s 《法華論》—realization, trust, offering, hearing the Dharma, and reading, reciting, keeping, and teaching—the Chapter on Distinguishing Qualities corresponds to the first three, while 「此為第四聞法…… “this is the fourth, hearing the Dharma … Because hearing from another can give rise to joyful acceptance, it is called hearing the Dharma” 〔0836b06〕. The 《法華論》 combines the Chapter on Distinguishing Qualities and the Chapter on the Qualities of Joyful Acceptance as the “Maitreya chapter”: 「初四俱彌勒品…… “the first four are all in the Maitreya chapter … because in all of them the Buddha addresses Maitreya” 〔0807b02〕. Within the transmission of learning and practice, this chapter is judged to explain 「傍修行之福」 tr. “the merit of ancillary practice” 〔0836b02〕: joyful acceptance is ancillary cultivation, in contrast to the principal dependent practice of reading, reciting, keeping, and teaching in the following chapter.
(3) The judgment within the comparison—the great-vehicle cause surpasses the lesser-vehicle fruit (the only doctrinal judgment in the entire passage) 〔T34n1723 0836c10〕:
〔T34n1723 0836c10〕
tr. “A single thought of joyful acceptance will attain awakening, and the sentient beings transformed will exceed the preceding number; therefore its merit is greater. Enabling others to attain arhatship cannot bring them to buddhahood or enable them broadly to deliver sentient beings; therefore its merit is lesser.”
→ Why does the great benefactor’s enabling immeasurable sentient beings to attain arhatship not equal the joyful acceptance of one verse by the fiftieth person? Kuiji answers in terms of the direction of cause and fruit: a single thought of joyful acceptance is a cause of buddhahood, will attain awakening, and will broadly deliver immeasurably many beings. Enabling others to attain arhatship is a fruit of the two vehicles; although that fruit is accomplished, the scope of deliverance is bounded. The great-vehicle cause surpasses the lesser-vehicle fruit. He also judges the various forms of merit from hearing the sutra as 「此據世果,非出世故」 tr. “this is stated in terms of worldly fruits, for these are not supramundane” 〔0836c21〕: elephant and horse carriages and the seats of Śakra, Brahmā, and a wheel-turning sage-king are all judged to be worldly recompenses.
Note: the Consciousness-Only content in the 《玄贊》 for this chapter is nearly zero, even briefer than in Chapters 9 and 13. There are no three natures, no stages, and no seeds—only an explanation of the name, the reason for the chapter’s coming, and a single judgment within the comparison. Kuiji gives no explanation of why the number fifty is used for the fiftieth person; his outline says only 「初成第五十,後成第一者」 tr. “first confirming the fiftieth, and afterward confirming the first” 〔0836c10〕. This is recorded honestly. Tiantai and Sanlun each have an explanation, presented in Heading IV and recorded side by side without adjudication. The final expository section is therefore kept strictly narrow: it does not inflate the material, move the three non-arisings from the Chapter on Distinguishing Qualities into this chapter, or impose the three-natures axis of the Chapter on Skillful Means.
IV. The Explanations of the Various Masters (the Ancients · Their Traditions Stated · Recorded without Adjudicating)
The Cien, Tiantai, and Sanlun traditions read the same joyful acceptance and transmission to the fiftieth person differently. The expository mirror of this edition is Kuiji’s Cien 《玄贊》; the Tiantai and Sanlun readings are recorded alongside it, their differences stated without adjudication.
Qualification of terms: ① 「五十展轉」 is a later summary term. tr. “fiftyfold transmission.” This exact sequence has zero occurrences in the relevant chapter passages—or anywhere in the complete works—of Zhiyi’s 《文句》 and Jizang’s 《義疏》. The sutra itself has 「如是展轉,至第五十」 tr. “in this way it is transmitted in turn until it reaches the fiftieth person” 〔T09n0262 0046c04〕, while Jizang quotes it as 「如是展轉至第五十人」 tr. “in this way it is transmitted in turn until it reaches the fiftieth person” 〔T34n1721 0613c05〕. ② 「一念隨喜」 is the sutra’s own phrase. tr. “a single thought of joyful acceptance.” It occurs in the Chapter on the Dharma Teacher—「乃至一念隨喜者」 tr. “even one who has a single thought of joyful acceptance” 〔T09n0262 0030c05/0030c08〕—and Zhiyi quotes it in his discussion of that chapter 〔T34n1718 0109a18〕; it is not a phrase from this chapter. Both commentaries have zero occurrences of it in the present chapter. Here Zhiyi actually writes 「一念理解」 tr. “a single thought of understanding” and 「一念慶己慶他」 tr. “a single thought of celebrating oneself and celebrating others” 〔0138c02〕. The sequence 「隨喜一念」 appears only in the 《玄贊》. tr. “a single thought of joyful acceptance” 〔0836c10〕; it has zero occurrences in both of the other commentaries. ③ Zhiyi establishes two explanations of “the fifty people”—a horizontal count through the various teachings and a direct count through the Perfect Teaching. Neither uses the exact sequence 「五十展轉」 tr. “fiftyfold transmission.”
Cien · Kuiji’s 《玄贊》 T34n1723 (the Principal Mirror)
Kuiji gives three gateways—the threefold reason for the chapter’s coming, the explanation of its name, and the resolution of a difficulty. He places the chapter as 「聞法」 tr. “hearing the Dharma,” fourth among the five gateways of Dharma-power 〔0836b06〕; explains joyful acceptance as 「身心順從深生忻悅,以此為因生功德果」 tr. “the body and mind following in accord and giving rise to deep gladness, with this as the cause from which the fruit of qualities arises” 〔0836b09〕; and judges the comparison through 「隨喜一念當得菩提…… “a single thought of joyful acceptance will attain awakening … enabling others to attain arhatship cannot bring them to buddhahood or enable them broadly to deliver sentient beings, and therefore its merit is lesser” 〔0836c10〕. He judges the forms of merit from hearing the sutra as 「此據世果,非出世故」 tr. “stated in terms of worldly fruits, for these are not supramundane” 〔0836c21〕; divides the marks and signs into five groups—voice, mouth, nose, face, and the marks as a whole 〔0836c28〕; and divides the verse into eighteen stanzas 〔0837a15〕. See Heading III. The Cien line is carried forward by Huizhao’s 《法華玄贊義決》 T34n1724.
Tiantai · Zhiyi’s 《文句》 T34n1718 (Parallel Witness)
Zhiyi judges the fiftieth person in this chapter to be the “first stage” among the five stages after cessation in the preceding chapter: 「第五十人是初品之初,初但有一念理解,但有一念慶己慶他」 tr. “The fiftieth person is at the beginning of the first stage. At first there is only a single thought of understanding, only a single thought of celebrating oneself and celebrating others” 〔0138c02〕; and 「前品已格四人不說初者,彌勒承機問出」 tr. “The preceding chapter already compared the four people but did not speak of the first; Maitreya, taking up the occasion, asks and brings it forth” 〔0138c20〕. The preceding chapter compared the four kinds of trust but did not compare initial joyful acceptance, so Maitreya takes up the occasion and asks; the present chapter is thus an extended explanation of the first among the five stages. In the fivefold explanation of the name, the first explanation is 〔T34n1718 0138b18〕:
〔T34n1718 0138b18〕
tr. “Following means following in accord with the nonduality and nondifference of phenomena and principle. Joy means celebrating oneself and celebrating others. On hearing the profound Dharma, following principle brings the qualities of the real, while following phenomena brings the qualities of the provisional. Celebrating oneself is wisdom; celebrating others is compassion. The provisional and the real, wisdom and severance, are spoken of together; therefore it is called the Chapter on the Qualities of Joyful Acceptance.”
On the number of the fifty people, Zhiyi first refutes three southern explanations—transmission as superior, equal, or inferior 〔0138c24〕—and one northern explanation 〔0138c26〕: 「今謂不爾,佛明言初品於會中聞傳傳相教,展轉五十格後況初」 tr. “I now say this is not so. The Buddha clearly says that the first stage hears within the assembly, transmits and teaches in succession, and proceeds in turn through fifty people, comparing the last to indicate how much more is true of the first” 〔0138c28〕. He establishes two explanations: 「一、橫約諸教四眾,二、直約圓教數之」 tr. “first, counting horizontally in terms of the fourfold assemblies of the various teachings; second, counting directly in terms of the Perfect Teaching” 〔0139a03〕. In the horizontal explanation, the four gateways and fourfold assemblies open into six people and make forty-eight, with 「最初、最後合五十人」 tr. “the first and the last combined to make fifty people” 〔0139a06〕. In the vertical explanation, seven times seven in the Perfect gateway makes forty-nine; 「最後一人但是自解、無教他德,故格下以顯上耳」 tr. “the final person only understands personally and has no quality of teaching others; therefore the lower is compared in order to reveal the higher” 〔0139a09〕. In the comparison of merit, the text advances from Brahmā merit, to noble merit, to merit embodying the noble, to the merit of a lesser bodhisattva, and then to the merit of a great bodhisattva: 「大薩埵福不及聞法華經初隨喜福。 “The merit of a great bodhisattva does not equal the merit of initial joyful acceptance on hearing the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka. Why? Because that is not the Buddha-Dharma, not real, and not perfect. Although abiding in a later fruit, it does not equal our initial mind” 〔0139a26〕.
Sanlun · Jizang’s 《法華義疏》 T34n1721 (Parallel Witness)
Jizang judges the next three chapters to be three sections that “broadly explain the qualities of keeping the sutra, encouraging and exhorting its transmission”: 「初隨喜品明弟子下品功德」 tr. “first, the Chapter on Joyful Acceptance explains the disciples’ lower-grade qualities” (the Chapter on the Qualities of the Dharma Teacher explains the middle grade, and the Chapter on Bodhisattva Never Disparaging explains the purification of the six faculties as the higher grade) 〔0612c07〕. In terms of stages, 「隨喜人從發心至十信位」 tr. “the person of joyful acceptance extends from the arousal of resolve through the stage of the ten kinds of trust” 〔0612c10〕. He explains the mark of joyful acceptance as 「隨順二權二實體用而生歡喜,故有隨喜相也」 tr. “following in accord with the substance and function of the two provisional and the two real, and thereby giving rise to joy; therefore there is the mark of joyful acceptance” 〔0613a17〕. He opens it into two kinds, joyful acceptance of the Dharma and the person 〔0613a19〕, and judges: 「佛意明隨喜法華,法華是無所得法,即是波若」 tr. “The Buddha’s intent is to clarify joyful acceptance of the Lotus. The Lotus is the Dharma of non-attainment; it is precisely prajñā” 〔0613b03〕. His three-grade judgment of the comparison appears at 〔T34n1721 0614a13〕:
〔T34n1721 0614a13〕
tr. “Material giving is a worldly cause and is the lower grade. Dharma-giving enables attainment of the two vehicles and is named the middle grade. Joyful acceptance leads to buddhahood and is named the higher grade.”
He also says, 「財施是世間因,法施但得二乘,隨喜超凡越聖必當作佛,故隨喜勝也」 tr. “Material giving is a worldly cause; Dharma-giving attains only the two vehicles; joyful acceptance transcends ordinary beings and noble ones and will certainly lead to buddhahood; therefore joyful acceptance is superior” 〔0614a08〕. Refuting another explanation that correlates fifty positions with the ten grounds and forty minds, he says: 「初人親聞是故福勝,後則傳聞其福則劣也」 tr. “The first person hears directly, and therefore the merit is superior; the latter hears through transmission, and therefore the merit is inferior” 〔0614a20〕. On why the chapter title names joyful acceptance alone, he answers: 「隨喜是五人之初,故偏說也」 tr. “Joyful acceptance is the first of the five people, and therefore it alone is specified” 〔0614a25〕.
The Three Houses Recorded Together (Recorded without Adjudication)
On the explanation of joyful acceptance: Cien reads it as 「身心順從深生忻悅」 tr. “the body and mind following in accord and giving rise to deep gladness,” an explanation through cause and fruit; Tiantai as 「隨順事理・慶己慶人」 tr. “following phenomena and principle, celebrating oneself and celebrating others,” through provisional and real, wisdom and severance; and Sanlun as 「隨順二權二實體用」 tr. “following in accord with the substance and function of the two provisional and the two real,” with non-attainment precisely prajñā. Their explanations of its substance differ; they are recorded side by side without adjudication. On why the comparison shows joyful acceptance to be superior: Cien says the great-vehicle cause—attaining awakening and broadly delivering beings—surpasses the lesser-vehicle fruit—arhatship that cannot broadly deliver beings 〔0836c10〕; Tiantai says 「彼非佛法故、非實故、非圓故」 tr. “because that is not the Buddha-Dharma, not real, and not perfect” 〔0139a27〕; and Sanlun gives the three-grade judgment in which 「隨喜超凡越聖必當作佛」 tr. “joyful acceptance transcends ordinary beings and noble ones and will certainly lead to buddhahood” 〔0614a08〕. All three reveal the superiority of joyful acceptance, but the grounds differ: Cien points to the direction of cause and fruit, Tiantai to the judgment of perfection and reality, and Sanlun to the certainty of buddhahood. On the number fifty: Cien gives no explanation; Tiantai gives horizontal and vertical explanations; Jizang rejects correlation with the ten grounds and forty minds and instead takes the distinction between direct and transmitted hearing. These are recorded side by side without adjudication. On the placement of the chapter: Cien calls it the merit of ancillary practice and the gateway of hearing the Dharma; Tiantai calls it the extended explanation of the first among the five stages; Sanlun calls it the disciples’ lower-grade qualities, extending from the arousal of resolve through the ten kinds of trust. Zhiyi (538–597) and Jizang (549–623) precede Kuiji (632–682); all three are recorded side by side without adjudication.
V. Terminology
Ancient-transmitted Sanskrit (romanization · pronunciation aid) | Attestation by the ancient masters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
“Following is a name for following in accord; joy is a designation for gladness” 〔T34n1723 0836b09〕; Zhiyi: 「隨順事理・慶己慶人」 tr. “following phenomena and principle, celebrating oneself and celebrating others” 〔T34n1718 0138b18〕; Jizang: 「隨順二權二實體用」 tr. “following in accord with the substance and function of the two provisional and the two real” 〔T34n1721 0613a17〕; Dharmarakṣa uses 「勸助」「代喜」 tr. “encouragement and assistance” and “rejoicing on another’s behalf” 〔T09n0263 0118a05/0118a12〕 | Following in accord and becoming glad on hearing the Dharma; the substance of this chapter. The three houses explain it differently; their readings are recorded without adjudication |
| 五十展轉 | — | The sutra has 「如是展轉,至第五十」 tr. “in this way it is transmitted in turn until it reaches the fiftieth person” 〔本經 0046c04〕; Zhiyi gives horizontal and vertical explanations 〔T34n1718 0139a03〕; Jizang distinguishes direct from transmitted hearing 〔T34n1721 0614a20〕; Dharmarakṣa lacks this number 〔品段零命中〕 | Joyful acceptance and instruction passed in turn until the fiftieth person. The exact sequence 五十展轉 is a later summary term and occurs in neither commentary |
“the object used for comparison,” has four gateways—number and types of beings, what is given, number of years, and attainment of the path 〔T34n1723 0836b26〕 | The object used for comparison: eighty years of material giving followed by enabling all to attain the four fruits |
“[the term ‘arhat’ has zero occurrences in the chapter passage]” | The fourth fruit of the śrāvaka path; the great benefactor enables the beings to attain it, making it the utmost object of comparison |
“total retention” 〔T09n0263 0118b19〕 | The excellent companions with whom one who encourages another to listen will be born in the next life |
“this is stated in terms of worldly fruits, for these are not supramundane” 〔T34n1723 0836c21〕; Dharmarakṣa uses 「天帝・梵天床座・轉輪聖王」 tr. “Lord of the Devas, the seat of Brahmā, and wheel-turning sage-king” 〔T09n0263 0119a14〕 | The recompense for inviting another to sit or sharing one’s seat; Kuiji judges it a worldly, not supramundane, fruit |
VI. Similes · Rhetoric
This chapter contains none of the seven Lotus similes; its rhetorical core lies in comparison and the chain of transmission.
(1) The great benefactor simile—the object of comparison — 〔T09n0262 0046c06〕: one person supplies every source of enjoyment to beings of the six destinations and four kinds of birth throughout four hundred trillion asaṃkhyeya worlds for a full eighty years, then gathers and teaches them, enabling all to attain arhatship. This utmost material giving plus Dharma-giving does not equal even one part in hundreds of thousands of millions of the merit of the fiftieth person’s joyful acceptance of a single verse. The point of the simile is to use the utmost in both material giving and Dharma-giving to reveal, by contrast, the superior merit of a single thought of joyful acceptance—and thereby to reveal the profundity of what is joyfully accepted: the Dharma of the One Vehicle that leads to buddhahood. Kuiji judges the reason for superiority and inferiority in these words: 「隨喜一念當得菩提…… “a single thought of joyful acceptance will attain awakening … enabling others to attain arhatship cannot bring them to buddhahood or enable them broadly to deliver sentient beings; therefore its merit is lesser” 〔T34n1723 0836c10〕.
(2) The chain of transmission—the fiftyfold transmission — 〔T09n0262 0046c01〕: hearing the sutra and joyfully accepting it → explaining it as fully as one is able → the hearer joyfully accepting it and teaching it onward → proceeding in this way until the fiftieth person. Its rhetorical force lies in the fact that even at the furthest point of attenuation, the merit remains superior. What the fiftieth person hears is already the echo remaining after transmission through fifty hands, yet the merit of joyfully accepting a single verse is still immeasurable and boundless: 「何況最初於會中聞而隨喜者」 tr. “how much more so for the person who first hears it within the assembly and joyfully accepts it” 〔0047a01〕. The inferior is raised to indicate the superior.
(3) The simile of foam, bubbles, and heat-haze—in the verse, the world is not firm — 〔T09n0262 0047b03〕: the words by which the great benefactor teaches the sentient beings are 「世皆不牢固,如水沫泡焰,汝等咸應當,疾生厭離心」 tr. “Nothing in the world is firm or lasting; it is like foam on water, bubbles, and a heat-haze. All of you should quickly give rise to a mind of disillusionment and release.” Foam on water, bubbles, and a heat-haze illustrate the world’s lack of firmness. This teaching of the two vehicles, directed toward disillusionment and release, is placed in contrast with the teaching of the One Vehicle that is joyfully accepted.
VII. Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
(1) The treatise upon which this chapter relies—the framework of Kuiji’s 《
- Vasubandhu’s 《法華論》 — the five gateways of Dharma-power—realization, trust, offering, hearing the Dharma, and reading, reciting, keeping, and teaching—with this chapter corresponding to the fourth, 「聞法」 tr. “hearing the Dharma” 〔T34n1723 0836b06〕; the Chapter on Distinguishing Qualities and the Chapter on the Qualities of Joyful Acceptance are combined as the “Maitreya chapter” because in both the Buddha addresses Maitreya 〔0807b02〕; 「論經從初,但說聞故」 tr. “the sutra-text used by the Treatise speaks only of hearing from the beginning” 〔0836b11〕.
- Kuiji cites the 《玉篇》 for lexicographic explanations of 陌 and 窊 〔0836b25/0837a10〕. Zhiyi cites the 《大品》 on the mutual inclusion of the person and Dharma of joyful acceptance 〔T34n1718 0138c19〕. Jizang cites the 《法華論》《大品》《中論》《智度論》《雜心》《正法念經》 and other works 〔T34n1721 0612c11 起〕.
(2) Cross-reading within the Lotus:
- This chapter carries forward the Chapter on Distinguishing Qualities, Chapter 17: the end of Chapter 17 opens with 「聞是經而不毀呰、起隨喜心」 tr. “hearing this sutra, not disparaging it, and giving rise to a mind of joyful acceptance,” and the present chapter unfolds it. Jizang states this explicitly 〔0612c22〕, while Zhiyi judges the fiftieth person to be the first among the five stages after cessation in Chapter 17 〔0138c02〕.
- The sequence of the five gateways of Dharma-power → the Chapter on Distinguishing Qualities, Chapter 17—realization, trust, and offering → this chapter—hearing the Dharma → the Chapter on the Qualities of the Dharma Teacher, Chapter 19—reading, reciting, keeping, and teaching 〔T34n1723 0836b06/0807b02〕.
- Jizang’s sequence of three sections → this chapter—lower-grade qualities → the Chapter on the Qualities of the Dharma Teacher, Chapter 19—the middle grade → the Chapter on Bodhisattva Never Disparaging, Chapter 20—the higher grade 〔T34n1721 0612c07〕.
- Tiantai’s five stages → this chapter is the scriptural basis for joyful acceptance, the “first stage” among the five stages of contemplative practice. Together with the four kinds of trust and five stages in Chapter 17, it presents the full configuration of Tiantai’s stage of contemplative practice.
(3) Carrying forward: Huizhao’s 《法華玄贊義決》 T34n1724 carries forward the Cien line; Zhanran’s 《法華文句記》 T34n1719 carries forward the Tiantai line; and Jizang’s separate 《法華玄論》 T34n1720 belongs to the Sanlun line. Each carries forward its own tradition; the three are recorded side by side without adjudication.

- Record of formation: the chapter title is “The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance” in Kumārajīva and the supplemented edition, but “Encouragement and Assistance” in Dharmarakṣa, an old translation of joyful acceptance. The chapter is numbered 18 in Kumārajīva and 17 in Dharmarakṣa and the supplemented edition. Dharmarakṣa is a genuine alternate translation, with the older system of 勸助/代喜, 無著, 道跡, 總持, 天帝, and 精舍, and with both numbers “the fiftieth” and “eighty years” entirely absent. The supplemented edition is nearly identical word for word with Kumārajīva, with only one substantive character difference, 「量→限」 tr. “measured → delimited.” 「五十展轉」 is a later summary term. tr. “fiftyfold transmission.” The sutra has 「如是展轉,至第五十」 tr. “in this way it is transmitted in turn until it reaches the fiftieth person”; the exact sequence occurs in neither commentary.
