hrīḥ katamā / svayam avadyena lajjanā / duścarita-saṃyama-sanniśrayadāna-karmikā //
Dve me bhikkhave sukkā dhammā lokaṃ pālenti. Katame dve? Hiri ca ottappañ-ca.
Ime kho bhikkhave dve sukkā dhammā lokaṃ na pāleyyuṃ, nayidha paññāyetha mātāti vā mātucchāti vā ...
Sanskrit hrī derives from √hrī "to feel shame, blush" — the root names a bodily reaction (the reddening of the face when caught in fault) from which inner moral self-awareness is derived. Pāli hiri preserves the root directly. The PIE reconstruction is *ǵʰreyH- "to feel shame," which yields a surprising Germanic cognate: Old High German grīnan (to bare the teeth, scowl) → modern English grin. Both the grin of joy and the blush of shame descend from the same Indo-European root naming the involuntary facial display of one caught — whether in delight or in fault. English shame, by contrast, descends from a wholly different root: PGm *skamō < PIE *(s)kem- "to cover, to hide." Rendering 慚 as "shame" therefore crosses the wrong etymological bridge. Latin con-scientia ("knowing-with") aligns better: conscience is the cognitive self-witnessing — knowing-together-with-oneself — that hrī functionally is.
Hrī is the second of the eleven wholesome cetasikas (善十一) in Yogācāra and parallels hiri as a sobhana-sādhāraṇa factor in Theravāda. Asaṅga's Abhidharma-samuccaya defines it as svayam avadyena lajjanā — "with respect to fault, self-grounded embarrassment" — with function duścarita-saṃyama-sanniśrayadāna: providing the basis for the restraint of bad conduct. Two precisions structure the definition. The qualifier svayam ("by oneself") is load-bearing: hrī is the shame that arises from one's own self-image and Dharma-commitment, distinct from apatrāpya (#21), which arises from awareness of others' judgment (→#21). The function clause duścarita-saṃyama names what hrī enables: not the eradication of bad conduct but the putting-of-restraint-upon it. Hrī is upstream of restraint, not identical with it.
Xuanzang's reframing. Among the cetasika definitions verified in this corpus, hrī is one of very few where the Cheng Weishi Lun does not preserve Asaṅga's Sanskrit verbatim. Asaṅga's lajjanā (embarrassment, a negative-affective response) becomes Xuanzang's 「崇重賢善」(revering the worthy and the wholesome, a positive-affective response). The reframing is from retreating-from-fault to advancing-toward-virtue — not contradictory but a deliberate absorption of hrī into the Han ethical idiom, where 尊德重道 is the more native moral vocabulary than the blunter Sanskrit lajjanā. The two readings together give hrī's full character: averse to evil because committed to good.
The Visuddhimagga XIV.142 supplies four marks of hiri: characteristic pāpa-jigucchana (disgust at evil), function lajjākārena pāpānaṃ-akaraṇa (refraining from evil in the manner of one ashamed), manifestation pāpato-saṅkocana (shrinking from evil), proximate cause attagārava (self-respect). The Pāli attagārava and Asaṅga's svayam are the same anchor: self. The two traditions agree exactly on the padaṭṭhāna of hiri/hrī — its proximate cause is one's regard for one's own dignity as a being-on-the-path. The characteristic-end (disgust vs embarrassment) shows minor color-difference; the cause-end (self-respect) is identical. This is among the cleanest cross-tradition matches in the entire fifty-one cetasika corpus.
Hrī and apatrāpya (#21) are paired in every canonical and commentarial appearance as sukkā dhammā lokapālā — the bright dharmas that protect the world. Hrī's axis is self; apatrāpya's is other (→#21). A practice that develops only hrī — caring only what one thinks of oneself — risks proud isolation. A practice that develops only apatrāpya — caring only what others think — risks dependence on social approval. The two together bracket moral integrity from both ends. The Cheng Weishi Lun makes the partition explicit: 自法名自,世間名他 — "the self is named by self and Dharma; the world is named by others." The pair must be cultivated together (→#21).
Conscience — by the strength of self and Dharma, the embarrassment that arises with respect to fault, manifesting as reverence for what is worthy and wholesome: this is its nature. To provide the basis upon which the restraint of bad conduct stands: this is its function.
譯translator's note
