Moral fear

Apatrāpya · ottappa

saṃskṛta

apa-(離、遠離)+ √trap(赧、慚;本義為「轉開」)+ -ya(抽象後綴)——「轉離可愧之境」。

Sanskrit trapate(為羞——「於羞而轉開」)即此根之原始義;同根於 Greek trepein(轉)、tropos(轉勢)、tropē(轉折);Latin trepit(他轉)、trepidus(顫慄、惶懼)→ 英文 trepidation(惶懼)、trepidintrepid(無懼)。

apatrāpyaṃ katamat / parato 'vadyena lajjanā / tat-karmakam eva //

Vism padaṭṭhāna
(#20)svayam(由自體)attagārava(自尊)
(#21)parato(由他)paragārava(重他)

pāḷi

Dve me bhikkhave sukkā dhammā lokaṃ pālenti. Katame dve? Hiri ca ottappañ-ca.

Ime kho bhikkhave dve sukkā dhammā lokaṃ na pāleyyuṃ, nayidha paññāyetha mātāti vā mātucchāti vā ...

Pāli

印歐祖語 *trep-(轉、顫)同根於梵 trapate(「於羞而轉開」)、希臘 trepein(轉)、tropos(轉勢)、tropē(轉折);拉丁 trepit(他轉)、trepidus(顫慄、惶懼)——英文 trepidation(惶懼之退縮)、intrepid(無懼)同屬此根。

「二白法護世」(sukkā dhammā lokapālā)於 Iti 42(正面式)、AN 2.9(反面式)、DN 33、AN 7.6、Pug 1.1 五重以上共傳。

Etymology

Sanskrit apatrāpya compounds apa- ("away from") + √trap ("to turn aside in shame, be abashed") + abstract -ya. The Sanskrit verb trapate literally names the turning-away of one caught in fault. The PIE root *trep- "to turn, tremble" yields cognates across Indo-European: Greek trépein (to turn), tropos (turn, manner), tropḗ (turn, change); Latin trepit (turns), trepidus (anxious, agitated, trembling), whence English trepidation, trepid, intrepid. The closest English etymological sibling is trepidation — the anxious shrinking-aside of one fearful of being seen at fault. Pāli ottappa preserves a different root: ava- + √tap ("to burn, scorch"). The two traditions converge on the same dharma but crystallize it through different metaphors — Sanskrit images motion (turning away), Pāli images heat (scorching).

Doctrinal frame

Apatrāpya is the third of the eleven wholesome cetasikas (善十一) in Yogācāra and the canonical pair of hrī (#20). Asaṅga's Abhidharma-samuccaya defines it as parato 'vadyena lajjanā / tat-karmakam eva — "with respect to fault, other-grounded embarrassment; the function is the same as hrī's." The terseness is itself doctrine: apatrāpya's function (providing the basis for restraint of bad conduct) is identical to hrī's; the only structural difference is the anchor. Where hrī arises from self-respect (svayam), apatrāpya arises from other-regard (parato). Tat-karmakam eva — "having that very same function" — economically marks the structural identity while the anchor-difference remains unambiguous. Xuanzang renders this as 「依世間力、輕拒暴惡為性」 — a positive reframing parallel to his treatment of hrī: where Asaṅga gives lajjanā (embarrassment), the Cheng Weishi Lun gives 輕拒 (forward-spurning).

Cross-tradition

The Visuddhimagga XIV.142 names ottappa's characteristic as uttāsa (dread), function uttāsākārena pāpānaṃ-akaraṇa (refraining from evil through dread), manifestation pāpato-saṅkocana (shrinking from evil — the very same as hrī), and proximate cause paragārava (respect for others). The match with Asaṅga is exact at every load-bearing point: parato = paragārava; same paccupaṭṭhāna (saṅkocana). Two traditions, converging from different metaphors (motion vs heat), arrive at the same four-fold structure. The Atthasālinī's pair-simile makes the relationship vivid: hiri shrinks from evil as one shrinks from filth (an inner aversion); ottappa shrinks from evil as one shrinks from a hot coal (an outer threat — the world's regard scorches). The Pāli root √tap (scorch) is precisely calibrated to this other-directed image.

Practitioner's seam

Hrī and apatrāpyahiri and ottappa — are the sukkā dhammā lokapālā: the bright dharmas that protect the world. Itivuttaka 42 names them positively; Aṅguttara Nikāya 2.9 names them negatively (without these two, the world would not know mother from sister). The structural reason for their inseparability: a contemplative who develops only hrī (→#20) drifts toward proud isolation; one who develops only apatrāpya drifts toward dependence on social approval. The two together bracket moral integrity from both ends. The Cheng Weishi Lun partition — 自法名自,世間名他 — is deliberately precise: self is named by oneself and the Dharma; world is named by others. Yogācāra and Theravāda agree exactly on this bipartite architecture.

Translation

No English single word captures apatrāpya without distortion. Shame (PIE *(s)kem- "to cover") names a different morphology — the self-concealing response, not the world-respecting dread. Guilt names retrospective judgment of an act, not the prospective aversion of apatrāpya. Conscience fits hrī better (→#20). The translation moral fear — capturing the uttāsa (dread) image central to the Visuddhimagga and the parato (other-grounded) anchor of Asaṅga — is preferred. Trepidation, etymologically the closest English cognate, lacks the moral specificity.

Translation.

Moral fear — by the strength of the world's regard, the embarrassment that arises with respect to fault, manifesting as the spurning of what is base and cruel: this is its nature. The same function as conscience (→#20): providing the basis upon which the restraint of bad conduct stands.

translator's note
