The first ten lines of the Amitābha Sūtra set out, one by one, everything a Dharma assembly requires: a transmission heard with one’s own ears, the moment when speaker and hearer met, the Buddha who spoke, the Jeta Grove and Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park, and a grove filled with people.
Then the Buddha spoke. No one had asked.
Five Things
These ten lines may be read as five things: so that trust may arise, “Thus have I heard”; speaker and hearer meeting, “at one time”; a teaching must have a teacher, “the Buddha”; a teaching must have a place, “in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park, in the country of Śrāvastī”; and last, those to whom it is addressed — the ones who came to hear.
The five answer a single question: on what grounds may a stretch of speech be received as Dharma?
Sixteen Names, Eight Pairings
Of the twelve hundred and fifty great bhikṣus, the sūtra names sixteen. These sixteen names stand two by two: inner wisdom with outer powers, ascetic discipline with eloquence, realizing emptiness with knowing illusion, abandoning folly with departing from desire, wide learning with hidden practice, flowing springs with worthy offerings, converting greed with removing arrogance, giving medicine with feasting the saṅgha.
Not like doubled with like — two courses set side by side. The roster holds Śāriputra, whose wisdom stood out, and also Cūḍapanthaka, born beside a road; Ānanda of wide learning, and Rāhula of hidden practice. A single phrase of the sūtra — “such were the many great disciples” — gathers them all.
Then four bodhisattvas: Mañjuśrī, Ajita, Qiantuohedi, Nityodyukta. What “Qiantuohedi” means, a Tang commentator declared undetermined — what is not known is said to be not known, and nothing is supplied in its stead.
One Word: “Together”
Last come Śakra, lord of the gods, and an immeasurable multitude. With the three classes complete, the introduction closes on the single word “together.”
Those who had exhausted the afflictions and those still in training, those first in the list and those last, the human and the divine — all seated in one grove, awaiting one utterance.
And that utterance begins in the west: “From here, westward, past a hundred thousand koṭis of buddha-lands.”

〔4 · The time, the Buddha, the place〕(0346b28)At one time the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park, in the country of Śrāvastī. (Prince Jeta gave the grove and its trees; the elder Sudatta bought the ground by paving it with gold and built the monastery there. Because Sudatta constantly relieved those who were solitary and without support, he was called Anāthapiṇḍada, “Giver to the Solitary.”)
〔5 · The great assembly of bhikṣus〕(0346b29)Present with the Buddha were twelve hundred and fifty great bhikṣus. All of them were great arhats — sages who had exhausted the afflictions and were worthy of the offerings of gods and men — and all were known and esteemed by the whole assembly.
〔6 · The sixteen great disciples named〕(0346c01)Among them were: the elder Śāriputra (Sanskrit Śāriputra, “son of the śāri bird,” named after his mother); Mahāmaudgalyāyana (Sanskrit “of the great bean-gathering clan,” named from his mother’s lineage); Mahākāśyapa (upholder of the ascetic discipline); Mahākātyāyana (Sanskrit “great male of the shaven lineage,” from a brahmin clan); Mahākauṣṭhila (Sanskrit “great knee,” so named for his large knees; he was Śāriputra’s maternal uncle); Revata (Sanskrit “the Aśvinī constellation,” named from the star-rite by which his birth was sought); Cūḍapanthaka (Sanskrit “roadside-born,” so named because he was born beside a road); Nanda (Sanskrit “delight in beauty”; he was the Buddha’s younger brother); Ānanda (Sanskrit “rejoicing,” so named because he was born when the whole world rejoiced at the Buddha’s awakening); Rāhula (the Buddha’s son, renowned for hidden practice); Gavāṃpati (Sanskrit “ox-mark,” who bore the appearance of a chewing ox through past karma); Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja (“Piṇḍola” is his given name; “Bhāradvāja” is his clan name, meaning “sharp faculties”); Kālodayin (Sanskrit “black radiance,” whose body had a dark lustre able to shine; he once converted a miserly woman to give up her greed); Mahākapphiṇa (Sanskrit “the Scorpio lodging,” who gained the path when the Buddha lodged in the same room and appeared to him as an aged bhikṣu to teach him); Vakkula (Sanskrit “fine countenance,” who in a former life gave a single myrobalan fruit to an ailing bhikṣu and thereby received the reward of freedom from illness); and Aniruddha (Sanskrit “unceasing,” the Buddha’s cousin, who in a former life offered a single meal to a pratyekabuddha and whose merit did not cease for fifty kalpas). Such were the many great disciples in that assembly.
〔7 · The bodhisattva-mahāsattvas〕(0346c06)There were also many bodhisattva-mahāsattvas — those of great resolve and great practice: Mañjuśrī, Prince of the Dharma (Sanskrit “wondrously auspicious,” at whose birth ten auspicious signs appeared; “Prince of the Dharma” says that he succeeds to the station of the Dharma); the bodhisattva Ajita (Sanskrit “the compassionate one,” that is, Maitreya); the bodhisattva Qiantuohedi (the commentator records that the rendering of this name is not determined); and the bodhisattva Nityodyukta (“ever-exerting”: each moment surpassing the moment before, advancing without turning back). Such were the many great bodhisattvas in that assembly.
〔8 · The multitude of gods〕(0346c08)There were also Śakra, lord of the gods, and an immeasurable, uncountable multitude of gods, all present together.
Most sūtras open with a question. In the Vimalakīrti Sūtra, Ratnākara offers a canopy and asks about the pure land; in the Sūtra on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life, Vaidehī, imprisoned, begs for a place of peace. The Amitābha Sūtra has none of this. The introduction sets five things in place — the hearing, the time, the Buddha, the place, and the assembly — and then the Buddha simply begins to speak.
The introduction offers no explanation for this. It only assembles the conditions for a Dharma assembly, and then stops.
Five Things, None of Which May Be Missing
The introduction ends at “together with an immeasurable multitude of gods.” Within this passage five things may be read out clearly: “Thus have I heard,” spoken so that trust may arise; “at one time,” marking the meeting of speaker and hearer; “the Buddha,” since a teaching must have a teacher; “in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park, in the country of Śrāvastī,” since a teaching must have a place; and last, those to whom it is addressed — the three classes of the assembly.
These five look like convention. Set side by side, however, they are found to answer a single question: on what grounds may a stretch of speech be received as Dharma?
I heard it myself — this is transmission. At that time — this is the moment when speaker and hearer actually met. The Buddha — this is who spoke. The Jeta Grove — this is where it was spoken. These people were present — these are the ones able to understand it and able to pass it on. Let any one of the five be missing, and everything that follows hangs in the air.
Why Śāriputra Stands First
Of the sixteen great disciples, Śāriputra is named first. This is worth pausing over: more than a thousand arhats had come to the Jeta Grove, all of them possessing the three knowledges and established in the fourth fruit. Why should the son of the śāri bird come first in the list?
The answer lies not in rank but in this particular assembly. Śāriputra’s eloquence surpassed that of ordinary śrāvaka sages and his wisdom stood out among his peers; on Vulture Peak he was the one who requested the teaching on the assembly’s behalf, and at Śrāvastī he was foremost among those who heard the sūtra. To place him first violates nothing.
What deserves notice is the shape of that answer. It does not say that Śāriputra is the greatest; it says what office he holds in this particular sūtra. Throughout the Amitābha Sūtra the Buddha calls only one person by name — Śāriputra. The three characters occur thirty-eight times. By placing that name at the very front, the introduction gives every later call its footing.
And Śāriputra is precisely the one placed under “inner wisdom” in the eight pairs. The Buddha speaks the practice that appears to require the least analytical wisdom — holding fast to the name — to the man of inner wisdom. The introduction does not remark on this. It only arranges the people.
Sixteen Names, Paired Two by Two
The sixteen disciples may be read as eight pairs: inner wisdom with outer powers, ascetic discipline with eloquence, realizing emptiness with knowing illusion, abandoning folly with departing from desire, wide learning with hidden practice, flowing springs with worthy offerings, converting greed with removing arrogance, giving medicine with feasting the saṅgha.
This reading turns a list of names into a figure. Śāriputra’s wisdom stands opposite Maudgalyāyana’s powers; Kāśyapa’s asceticism opposite Kātyāyana’s eloquence; Ānanda’s wide learning opposite Rāhula’s hidden practice. No pair is a doubling of like with like; each sets two different courses beside one another.
Nor is the roster made only of the illustrious. Cūḍapanthaka is “roadside-born,” placed under “abandoning folly” among the eight pairs; Gavāṃpati still bore the appearance of a chewing ox through former karma; Nanda was the Buddha’s own younger brother, and even the “beauty” in his name “delight in beauty” was taken from his wife’s. These men sat in the same assembly as Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana. The introduction assigns them no grades — the single phrase “such were the many great disciples” gathers them all.
Then come four bodhisattvas. Mañjuśrī is called Prince of the Dharma; Ajita is Maitreya; Nityodyukta surpasses each moment the moment before. As for Qiantuohedi, a Tang commentator left four words in that place: the rendering is not determined. What is not known is said to be not known. That is followed here, and nothing is supplied in its stead.
From the Gods to the Word “Together”
Last come Śakra, lord of the gods, and an immeasurable multitude. With the three classes of the assembly — śrāvakas, bodhisattvas, and gods — now complete, the introduction draws to a close.
It closes on the single word “together.” That word gathers every difference into one place: those who have exhausted the afflictions and those still in training, those whose wisdom stood out and those of ordinary capacity, the renunciants and the gods — all seated in one grove, awaiting one utterance.
Then the Buddha spoke. He waited for no one to ask.
Why Read These Ten Lines to the End
The introduction is often treated as a preamble and skipped. The real content of a sūtra seems to begin only when the Buddha opens his mouth; what comes before is announcement.
Read to the end, however, these ten lines are seen to be doing something quite specific: they set out what conditions must hold together for an utterance to become a Dharma one can rely upon.
Someone heard it with his own ears, so there is transmission. Speaker and hearer did meet in that moment, so it is not imagined. The one who spoke was the Buddha, so there is authority. There was a definite place, so it is not out of nowhere. And those present were able both to understand and to transmit, so it will not be cut off. Let one of the five be missing, and what follows hangs in the air.
This structure is not peculiar to the Amitābha Sūtra. Every sūtra opens so; only here it is unusually bare — no requester, no prelude, no display of powers. The five are set out, and the Buddha speaks.
The way the sūtra arranges people says something too. The sixteen great disciples stand two by two, and no pair doubles like with like: wisdom with powers, asceticism with eloquence, wide learning with hidden practice. The roster holds the most renowned and also one born beside a road, of ordinary capacity; those who had exhausted the afflictions, and Ānanda who was still in training. Among the four bodhisattvas there is even one whose name the most exacting Tang analyst of terms declared undetermined.
Of these differences the sūtra offers not one word of comment. It gathers them with six characters — “such were the many great disciples” — and then joins the three classes with the single word “together.”
A Dharma assembly comes about not because those present are alike, but because they are present together.
That Utterance Begins in the West
The last word of the introduction is “together.” The next sentence is: “At that time the Buddha said to the elder Śāriputra.”
Twelve hundred and fifty were seated, the fourfold assembly had gathered, the gods were beyond number — and when the Buddha spoke, he called one name.
The one so called stands under “inner wisdom” among the eight pairs. Yet the practice about to be taught is the one later given as holding fast to the name — a practice requiring no analysis, no eloquence, only the holding of a name without letting go.
The sūtra does not explain this arrangement. It only arranges the people first, and then speaks.
Carrying Forward — Three Readings, Each in Its Own Place
Above is the meaning of these ten lines themselves. Below, two Tang eyes cast their light from the side — the mirror is not the sūtra; only the same Dharma assembly, seen through two ways of reading.
The Cien line is the reading of Kuiji’s Comprehensive Praise Commentary on the Amitābha Sūtra. He divides the whole sūtra into three parts, the introduction ending at “and Śakra, lord of the gods, together with an immeasurable multitude of gods”; within the introduction he sets aside the older sixfold division and follows the Buddhabhūmi treatise in dividing it into five. He reads the sixteen disciples as eight pairs and the four bodhisattvas as two, tracing every name to its Sanskrit form, to its karmic occasion in former lives, and to its position in the outline. “Elder,” he says, holds two senses: “first, advanced in years and seniority; second, broad in learning and deep in understanding.” Why Śāriputra stands first he sets as a question and then answers. This is the way of doctrinal analysis — reading the sūtra as a figure that can be opened out layer by layer.
Worth recording is his sense of measure. Explaining “Qiantuohedi,” he writes that the rendering is not determined, and in the same breath collates the name against Xuanzang’s new translation, The Sūtra on Praising the Pure Land and the Buddha’s Embrace, noting that in that recension the third bodhisattva is named “Never Resting.” That a member of Xuanzang’s own line should read Kumārajīva’s older version and check its names against the new one is internal evidence of the chain of transmission — and his count does not agree with the received text, which is recorded without adjudication.
The Shandao line is the reading of ritual practice. In the Liturgical Hymns for Turning the Sūtra and Walking the Path in Aspiration for Birth in the Pure Land, this introduction is recited without the alteration of a single character, and the recitation is followed by a hymn: “Aspire to be born there, aspire to be born there. The great compassion of all buddhas is not two.” No outline is imposed, no question set. Here the introduction is not an object of analysis but the content of chant.
The third reading is the manuscript speaking for itself. The text Shandao recited reads “a great assembly of bhikṣus” where the base text has “a great saṅgha of bhikṣus”; it also reads Maudgalyāyana, Kātyāyana, Cūḍapanthaka, and Vakkula in the graphic forms later found in the variant column of the Song, Yuan, and Ming printings. The Amitābha Sūtra on which seventh-century ritual depended and the base text printed today are not identical in fine detail. This is not enough to alter one character of the base text, but it lets one see that the sūtra was carried down alive.
Ten lines at the opening of a sūtra: read as structure by one, as sound by another, and leaving its own graphic forms in a reciter’s hands. The three do different work; recorded without adjudication, each in its own place.

Placement of the passage as a whole. This passage runs from the title and translator’s attribution, through “Thus have I heard,” to “together with an immeasurable multitude of gods” — that is, the entire domain of what Kuiji’s Comprehensive Praise Commentary identifies as the introduction. The sūtra lays its foundation by bringing the hearing, the time, the Buddha, the place, and the assembly all to completion; sixteen great disciples and four bodhisattvas are named one by one, and Śakra with the gods closes the roster. Xuanzang’s Sūtra on Praising the Pure Land and the Buddha’s Embrace has the same division but abbreviates the roster; each transmission keeps its own degree of detail.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
Kuiji’s Comprehensive Praise Commentary on the Amitābha Sūtra divides the whole sūtra into three parts:
—“Within this sūtra there are three parts in all. The first, from ‘Thus have I heard’ down to ‘and Śakra, lord of the gods, together with an immeasurable multitude of gods,’ is called the introduction. The second, from ‘At that time the Buddha said to the elder Śāriputra, from here westward’ up to ‘this is exceedingly difficult,’ is the main body. The third, from ‘When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra,’ is the transmission part” 〔T37n1758 0331a19〕.
The beginning and ending of this unit agree word for word with the beginning and ending of that introduction: the sūtra opens at 「佛說阿彌陀經」—“The Sūtra Spoken by the Buddha on Amitābha” 〔T12n0366 0346b25〕 and ends at 「無量諸天大眾俱」—“together with an immeasurable multitude of gods” 〔T12n0366 0346c08〕. The commentary marks the introduction as beginning at “Thus have I heard”; the title and attribution stand before it as the fascicle-front heading, and are gathered into this unit here.
For the internal division of the introduction, Kuiji sets aside the older sixfold division and follows the Buddhabhūmi treatise in a fivefold one:
—“If one follows the older masters, the introduction has six parts; here, following the Buddhabhūmi treatise, the introduction has five. First, so that trust may arise, it declares in summary what has been heard, saying ‘Thus have I heard.’ Second, speaker and hearer meet together with no divergence of time, and so it is called ‘at one time.’ Third, a teaching must have a master, and to show that the master is honoured and the Dharma necessarily excellent, he is called simply ‘the Buddha.’ Fourth, a teaching must depend on a place: in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park, in the country of Śrāvastī — the dwelling of the transformation-body, not the recompense-land. Fifth, those to whom it is addressed: Śāriputra and the rest” 〔T37n1758 0331a27〕.
The commentary states the close of the introduction explicitly:
—“The three assemblies above, differing among themselves, together complete the fifth item, those to whom it is addressed. The five differing parts together complete the introduction 〔what follows is the main body〕” 〔T37n1758 0337b21〕.
| Five parts (Buddhabhūmi) | Scriptural basis | Segment in this unit |
|---|---|---|
| 1. So that trust may arise | 「如是我聞」—“Thus have I heard” 〔T12n0366 0346b28〕 | Plain Reading 〔3〕 |
| 2. No divergence of time | 「一時」—“at one time” 〔T12n0366 0346b28〕 | Plain Reading 〔4〕 |
| 3. A teaching must have a master | 「佛」—“the Buddha” 〔T12n0366 0346b28〕 | Plain Reading 〔4〕 |
| 4. A teaching must depend on a place | 「在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園」—“in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park, in the country of Śrāvastī” 〔T12n0366 0346b28〕 | Plain Reading 〔4〕 |
| 5. Those to whom it is addressed | The three assemblies: the great saṅgha of bhikṣus, the bodhisattvas, the gods | Plain Reading 〔5〕–〔8〕 |
II. Collation with the Alternate Translation (T367, Xuanzang) — recorded without adjudication
| Position | Kumārajīva, T12n0366 | Xuanzang, T12n0367 |
|---|---|---|
| Title of the sūtra | 「佛說阿彌陀經」—“The Sūtra on Amitābha, Spoken by the Buddha” 〔T12n0366 0346b25〕 | 「稱讚淨土佛攝受經」—“The Sūtra on Praising the Pure Land and Being Received by the Buddha” 〔T12n0367 0348b22〕 |
| Attribution of the translation | 「姚秦龜茲三藏鳩摩羅什譯」—“Translated under the Later Qin by Kumārajīva, Tripiṭaka master of Kucha” 〔T12n0366 0346b27〕 | 「大唐三藏法師玄奘奉 詔譯」—“Translated by imperial decree by Xuanzang, Tripiṭaka Dharma master of the Great Tang” 〔T12n0367 0348b24〕 |
| Hearing, time, master, place | 「一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,與大比丘僧千二百五十人俱」—“At one time the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park, in the country of Śrāvastī, together with twelve hundred and fifty great bhikṣus” 〔T12n0366 0346b28〕 | 「如是我聞:一時,薄伽梵在室羅筏住誓多林給孤獨園,與大苾芻眾千二百五十人俱」—“Thus have I heard: at one time the Bhagavān was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park, together with twelve hundred and fifty great bhikṣus” 〔T12n0367 0348b25〕 |
| Roster of śrāvakas | Sixteen named in turn, from 「長老舍利弗」—“the elder Śāriputra” 〔T12n0366 0346c01〕 to 「阿㝹樓馱」—“Aniruddha” 〔T12n0366 0346c05〕 | Four only: 「尊者舍利子、摩訶目犍連、摩訶迦葉、阿泥律陀」—“the venerable Śāriputra, Mahāmaudgalyāyana, Mahākāśyapa, Aniruddha,” followed by 「如是等諸大聲聞而為上首」—“such great śrāvakas as these being foremost” 〔T12n0367 0348b29〕 |
| Roster of bodhisattvas | 「文殊師利法王子、阿逸多菩薩、乾陀訶提菩薩、常精進菩薩」—“Mañjuśrī, Prince of the Dharma; the bodhisattva Ajita; the bodhisattva Qiantuohedi; the bodhisattva Nityodyukta” 〔T12n0366 0346c06〕 | 「妙吉祥菩薩、無能勝菩薩、常精進菩薩、不休息菩薩」—“the bodhisattva Wondrously Auspicious; the bodhisattva Unconquerable; the bodhisattva Ever-Exerting; the bodhisattva Never Resting” 〔T12n0367 0348c02〕 |
| The gods | 「及釋提桓因等無量諸天大眾俱」—“and Śakra, lord of the gods, together with an immeasurable multitude of gods” 〔T12n0366 0346c08〕 | 「復有帝釋、大梵天王、堪忍界主、護世四王,如是上首百千俱胝那庾多數諸天子眾,及餘世間無量天、人、阿素洛等,為聞法故,俱來會坐。」—“There were also Śakra, the great Brahmā king, the lord of the Sahā world, and the four world-protecting kings; with such as these foremost, hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of gods, and besides them immeasurable gods, humans, asuras and others of the world, all came and sat together in order to hear the Dharma” 〔T12n0367 0348c04〕 |
The difference in the attribution, recorded without adjudication: the base text's attribution ends at the single word 「譯」—“translated,” and says nothing of a royal command. Xuanzang's recension states it outright: 「奉 詔譯」—“translated by imperial decree,” where the full-width space standing after 「奉」 is a pingque — the space a scribe leaves before a word denoting the sovereign's command, out of deference — and not blank space belonging to the page layout; it is preserved here character by character. The current-circulation printing of Kumārajīva's recension, for its part, adds 「奉詔」 after 「什」 (see the ninth topic, at 〔T12n0366 0346b27〕), giving 「鳩摩羅什奉詔譯」—“translated by Kumārajīva at imperial command.”
Three witnesses, three positions: the base text does not say the translation was made by decree; the circulation printing says it was; Xuanzang's recension says of itself that the decree it obeyed was a Tang one. Kuiji's commentary, at the point where it treats the title, moves straight into the exposition of the title from the sūtra's own words 「佛說阿彌陀經」—“The Sūtra on Amitābha, Spoken by the Buddha” 〔T37n1758 0331a14〕, and nowhere cites a single character of the attribution; nor does it anywhere use the words 詔, 敕, 王命, or 姚興 (searched across the whole of T37n1758: 詔 0, 姚興 0, 王命 0, 秦主 0, 奉命 0; the three occurrences of 勅 concern other matters — 「佛勅令」〔T37n1758 0336a25〕, 「勅命不入涅槃」〔T37n1758 0336b18〕, 「王言是勅,佛語成經」〔T37n1758 0344c10〕). Neither the sūtra nor the ancient masters says it, and this edition does not say it for them.
In explaining “the bodhisattva Qiantuohedi,” Kuiji himself takes Xuanzang’s recension as his point of comparison:
—“As for the bodhisattva Qiantuohedi, the rendering is not determined. In The Sūtra on Praising the Pure Land the third bodhisattva is named Never Resting — that is, converting and benefiting sentient beings with no cessation at all” 〔T37n1758 0337b07〕.
Recorded without adjudication. The commentary says that in Xuanzang’s recension “the third bodhisattva is named Never Resting,” whereas in the present T12n0367 the order is Wondrously Auspicious, Unconquerable, Ever-Exerting, Never Resting — Never Resting standing fourth. The commentator’s count does not agree with the received text; either the manuscript he used had a different order, or he counted from Unconquerable. Both are recorded; neither is forced.
III. Scriptural and Treatise Grounding (the “eye”)
For why the introduction establishes “Thus have I heard,” Kuiji cites the Great Perfection of Wisdom Treatise:
—“The Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom says: ‘Thus have I heard’ gives rise to trust; ‘received in faith and put into practice’ gives rise to wisdom. Trust is what enables entry; wisdom is what enables crossing over” 〔T37n1758 0331b16〕.
He further develops the sense: 「信為入法之所基、智為究竟之玄術」—“Trust is the foundation for entering the Dharma; wisdom is the profound art of ultimate attainment” 〔T37n1758 0331b17〕. The fivefold division of the introduction follows the Buddhabhūmi treatise (see Topic I), and the name “Prince of the Dharma” likewise: 「《佛地論》云:從世尊口正法所生」—“The Buddhabhūmi treatise says: born of the right Dharma from the Bhagavān’s mouth” 〔T37n1758 0337a22〕.
IV. Essentials of the Commentary on This Passage
On the occasion of “Thus have I heard,” the commentary recalls the four questions put at the Buddha’s parinirvāṇa:
「佛臨涅槃時,佛令有疑當問,時優婆離、阿𮋢樓馱教阿難問四事」—“When the Buddha was about to enter nirvāṇa, he directed that whoever had doubts should ask. At that time Upāli and Aniruddha instructed Ānanda to ask four things” 〔T37n1758 0331b07〕.
The last of the four was the question of what words to place at the head of every sūtra; the Buddha having answered, 「後阿難結集,還依佛教故也。」—“afterwards, when Ānanda compiled the collection, he did so in accordance with the Buddha’s instruction” 〔T37n1758 0331b14〕.
On the name “elder,” the commentary gives two senses: 「具二義故名為長老:一、年高臘長故;二、學廣解深故。」—“Because he possesses two senses he is called an elder: first, advanced in years and seniority; second, broad in learning and deep in understanding” 〔T37n1758 0334a09〕.
Why Śāriputra stands first among the śrāvakas the commentary sets as a question and answer:
—“Question: More than a thousand arhats had all come to the Jeta Grove, all realizing the three knowledges and all ascending to the fourth fruit. In the listing of names, why does the son of the śāri bird come first? Answer: Simply because his discernment surpassed the lesser sages and his wisdom stood out among his peers; on Vulture Peak he was foremost in requesting the teaching, and at Śrāvastī he was first among those who heard the sūtra. To set him at the very head violates nothing in principle” 〔T37n1758 0334a23〕.
—“As to saying ‘mahāsattva’: these bodhisattvas here have names resounding through the ten directions and occupy the eighth ground. To distinguish them from lesser bodhisattvas and to mark them off from the two vehicles, they are therefore called mahāsattvas” 〔T37n1758 0337a10〕.
V. Divergent Readings of the Commentators (two mirrors in parallel — recorded without adjudication)
| Mirror | Verbatim | Anchor |
|---|---|---|
—“Now the initial listing of names divides into eight pairs: first, inner wisdom paired with outer powers; second, ascetic discipline with eloquence; third, realizing emptiness with knowing illusion; fourth, abandoning folly with departing from desire; fifth, wide learning with hidden practice; sixth, flowing springs with worthy offerings; seventh, converting greed with removing arrogance; eighth, giving medicine with feasting the saṅgha” | 〔T37n1758 0334a05〕 |
—“Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park, in the country of Śrāvastī, together with twelve hundred and fifty great bhikṣus.” | 〔T47n1979 0430c10〕 |
The Cien mirror glosses name by name, matching eight pairs to the sixteen disciples: this belongs to the way of doctrinal analysis. The Shandao line instead recites the whole introduction within a liturgy, imposing no outline: this belongs to the way of ritual practice. What each does with this passage differs; both are recorded, and no reconciliation is imposed.
VI. Terms (first occurrences — all glosses drawn from the commentary)
| Term | Verbatim gloss | Anchor |
|---|---|---|
—“In Sanskrit Śāriputra; here rendered ‘spring warbler,’ also ‘śāri bird’; putra means ‘son.’ Through corruption and abbreviation it is said Sheli-fu” | 〔T37n1758 0334a10〕 |

—“As for Revata, in Sanskrit Raivata, here rendered ‘the lodging star,’ a northern constellation; a son was obtained by sacrificing to it, and he was named accordingly” | 〔T37n1758 0335b13〕 |
—“As for Cūḍapanthaka, here rendered ‘roadside-born’” | 〔T37n1758 0335b29〕 |

—“Kālodayin: the Sūtra of Mindfulness of the Right Dharma says the name is rendered ‘black radiance,’ because his body had a dark lustre able to shine” | 〔T37n1758 0336b21〕 |
| Mahākapphiṇa 摩訶劫賓那 | 「摩訶劫賓那,此云房宿,佛與同房宿」—“Mahākapphiṇa, here rendered ‘the Scorpio lodging’; the Buddha lodged in the same room with him” | 〔T37n1758 0336b28〕 |
—“In Sanskrit Vakkula, here rendered ‘fine countenance’; to say ‘Bojuluo’ is a corruption” | 〔T37n1758 0336c06〕 |

| Mañjuśrī 文殊師利 | 「梵云曼殊師利,此云妙吉祥,生時有十種吉祥事故」—“In Sanskrit Mañjuśrī, here rendered ‘wondrously auspicious,’ because at his birth there were ten auspicious events” | 〔T37n1758 0337a14〕 |
—“Ajita, here rendered ‘the compassionate one.’ According to the Sanskrit it should be Maitreya, which is rendered ‘compassion’; the older forms Mitili and Mile are both corruptions” | 〔T37n1758 0337a27〕 |
| Nityodyukta 常精進 | 「常精進者,念念勝前進」—“As for Ever-Exerting: in each moment he surpasses the moment before and advances” | 〔T37n1758 0337b09〕 |
Kuiji states of his own accord 「未詳所譯」—“the rendering is not determined” 〔T37n1758 0337b07〕 — and that is followed here; no gloss is supplied in its stead.
Sanskrit forms are taken only as transmitted by the ancient masters (Rule 9a); modern critical editions are not used as a basis. The Chinese renderings marked “here rendered” are the commentators’ own transmitted sense.
VII. Similes and Rhetoric
This passage contains no simile of its own — the introduction narrates the hearing, the time, the master, the place, and the assembly, all in direct statement. The mirror commentary does set a simile when explaining “trust,” citing a treatise:
「《毘婆沙論》:信者食法味之嘉手,學佛法者如大龍象」—“The Vibhāṣā treatise: trust is the fine hand that eats the flavour of the Dharma; one who studies the Buddha’s Dharma is like a great dragon-elephant” 〔T37n1758 0331c03〕.
What may be recorded as rhetoric is the pairing of the roster: the sixteen disciples stand two by two (the eight pairs of Topic V), and the four bodhisattvas likewise fall into two — 「一、十祥三會對;二、愍物策勤對」—“first, the ten auspices paired with the three assemblies; second, compassion for beings paired with urging on diligence” 〔T37n1758 0337a13〕. These are outlines set up by the commentator, not headings marked by the sūtra itself.
VIII. Citation and Carrying Forward
- Shandao recites the whole passage. T47n1979 recites this introduction word for word from 0430c10, ending at 「無量諸天大眾俱」—“together with an immeasurable multitude of gods” 〔T47n1979 0430c19〕, after which follows the hymn 「願往生願往生。 —“Aspire to be born there, aspire to be born there. The great compassion of all buddhas is not two” 〔T47n1979 0430c21〕. That this introduction entered the liturgy of Tang Pure Land practice is here attested by a surviving text.
- Kuiji collates against Xuanzang’s recension: see the citation in Topic II 〔T37n1758 0337b07〕. That a member of the same Tang Cien lineage should read Kumārajīva’s version and check its names against Xuanzang’s is internal evidence of the chain of transmission.
- No citation of this passage is found elsewhere in this corpus — a search of the whole
canon/tree yields nothing. Recorded honestly.
IX. Placement Among the Recensions
The Taishō collation notes (<app>) record eight instances within this unit, collating the base text (the Korean recension) against the Song 【宋】, Yuan 【元】, Ming 【明】, and current-circulation 【流布本】 printings:
| Anchor | Base text | Variant | Witnesses |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0346b27 | 「龜茲三藏」—“Tripiṭaka master of Kucha” | 三藏法師 (“Tripiṭaka Dharma master”) | Song · Yuan · Ming · circulation |
| 0346b27 | 「什」—“[Kumāra]jīva” | 什奉詔 (“Jīva, by imperial command”) | circulation |
What the two variants in the attribution mean: 「龜茲三藏」 against 「三藏法師」 turns on place or learning — the base text names the country he came from (Kucha), the four other witnesses the mastery he attained (Tripiṭaka Dharma master). 「什」 against 「什奉詔」 turns on the man or the command — the circulation printing adds 「奉詔」, saying that this translation was made at a royal decree, where the base text stops at 「譯」. Both variants belong to the wording of the attribution and not to the sūtra; they are recorded side by side without adjudication (see the second topic).
The text Shandao recited agrees with the variant column. The Liturgical Hymns recite 「與大比丘眾」—“together with a great assembly of bhikṣus” 〔T47n1979 0430c11〕, precisely the circulation reading “assembly”; and further 「摩訶目揵連」 〔T47n1979 0430c12〕, 「摩訶迦旃延」 〔T47n1979 0430c13〕, 「摩訶俱絺羅」 〔T47n1979 0430c13〕, 「周利槃陀伽」 〔T47n1979 0430c14〕, 「薄拘羅」 〔T47n1979 0430c15〕 — each agreeing word for word with the Song–Yuan–Ming column. The text on which seventh-century liturgy depended belongs to the same stream as the variant column of later printings. Recorded without adjudication; not one character of the base text is altered on that account.
Gaiji: one instance in this unit — the character 「㝹」 in “Aniruddha” (CB00145 · U+3779). Under the extraction contract the glyph present in the XML is preserved as it stands, neither supplied nor altered. The commentary offers its own correction of this character: 「云阿㝹馱者訛也,應作𮋢字。」—“To say A-nou-tuo is a corruption; the character should be written 𮋢” 〔T37n1758 0336c19〕. The commentary uses 「𮋢」 while the sūtra uses 「㝹」; both forms stand, recorded without adjudication.
Internal variation within the commentary: the name of the same eighth pair appears at 0334a08 as 「施藥筵僧對」 and at 0336c05 as “施藥莚僧對” (筵 / 莚). An internal variation within one work, recorded without adjudication.
This unit has no inline gloss (no occurrence); within its scriptural domain there is no collation layer other than the <app> notes.
