〔T12 0347a25〕
心要Essence

For five passages the sūtra has been writing about that place. At this passage the lens turns for the first time to the lord of that place.

The way it turns is that the Buddha asks the question himself: “Why is that buddha called Amitābha?”

One name, two reasons.

Brightness Can Be Compared; Unobstructedness Cannot

“That buddha’s light is measureless; it shines upon the lands of the ten directions with nothing to obstruct it; he is therefore called Amitābha.”

The sūtra does not say that the light is very bright, very great, very far-reaching. What it says is that nothing can block it.

Brightness admits of comparison; unobstructedness does not.

Then Why Is It Not Seen?

If the light shines throughout the ten directions, why do the people of this world not see it?

The answer handed down from of old uses two similes: one with a film over the eye cannot see the sunlight — is the sunlight then at fault? One whose ears are deaf cannot hear the thunderclap — is the thunderclap then to blame?

It makes no excuse for the light, and it does not say that the light in fact fails to reach here. It turns the whole question over to the side of the one who receives.

Sunlight is not brighter for one and dimmer for another; the thunderclap is not louder for one than for another. The difference lies not in what is illuminated but in what can see.

Lifespan Is Not a Span but an Act of Continuing

“The lifespan of that buddha, and of the people of his land, is measureless and boundless asaṃkhyeya kalpas; he is therefore named Amitābha.”

Asaṃkhyeya is Sanskrit; rendered into Chinese it means “beyond all counting” — a number that cannot be counted to its end.

And lifespan: the definition handed down from of old is remarkably concrete. It is not a stretch of time fitted onto a body, but a kind of “sustaining” upon consciousness — the function that carries life on, portion after portion.

Just as “bliss” was earlier reduced to a kind of feeling, so “lifespan” is here reduced to a kind of quality. A word that looks like an adjective is reduced to a mental factor that can be pointed at.

Measureless Does Not Mean Beginningless

“Since Amitābha Buddha became a buddha, ten kalpas have now passed.”

The sentence before has only just said that the lifespan is measureless, boundless asaṃkhyeya kalpas, and immediately a definite figure is given. Measureless and ten kalpas stand side by side in the same passage, and the sūtra finds no difficulty in it at all.

The one is said of the lifespan, which has no end; the other is said of his becoming a buddha, which has a beginning.

Measureless does not mean without a beginning; it means without an end.

Neither Assembly Can Be Counted

“That buddha has measureless, boundless śrāvaka disciples, all of them arhats, beyond what the counting of numbers can know; and the bodhisattvas are likewise.”

The śrāvakas cannot be counted, and neither can the bodhisattvas; the sūtra passes over it with four characters, “and likewise,” drawing no ranking of higher and lower.

In the introduction, when names were listed, the śrāvakas came first and the bodhisattvas after. Here the two assemblies are alike measureless.

Light and Lifespan Catch Two Things

Light speaks of everywhere — there is no place it fails to reach; lifespan speaks of always — there is no moment at which it breaks off. Unobstructed in space, unending in time.

A name that is to be held and recited would leak if it held only one half of this: with light and no lifespan, it could reach one but could not wait for one; with lifespan and no light, it could wait for one but could not reach one.

And this name is the very name that the later text has one hold fast to. Before teaching anyone to hold the name, the sūtra first makes plain what is contained in it.

義疏Exposition

For five passages the sūtra has been writing about that place: railings, pool waters, heavenly music, the golden ground, drifting flowers, flocks of birds, the sound of the wind. At this passage the lens turns for the first time to the lord of that place.

And the way it turns is that the Buddha asks the question himself: “Why is that buddha called Amitābha?”

This is the first time in the whole sūtra that the Buddha’s name is explained. The Cien line marks this place as “the distinguishing of the merits of the Buddha’s body” and says that it divides into three sections: first the question of the title is put, then the obtaining of the name is directly distinguished, and last the number of kalpas since he became a buddha is stated. The sense in which the name is obtained is twofold — one by reason of light, one by reason of lifespan.

One name, two reasons. That fact by itself is worth pausing over.

Light: Nothing Obstructs It

The first reason is light: “That buddha’s light is measureless; it shines upon the lands of the ten directions with nothing to obstruct it; he is therefore called Amitābha.”

The reading handed down divides light first into two kinds: inner light, which is wisdom illuminating the truth within, and outer light, which is the light of the body shining outward. What is spoken of here is the latter — the light of the body. And that body is described as “a substance of adamant that cannot be broken, a body of unobstructed liberation, like pure beryl, lustrous and clear through inside and out.”

Notice the words “with nothing to obstruct it.” The sūtra does not say that the light is very bright, very great, very far-reaching. What it says is that nothing can block it.

Brightness admits of comparison; unobstructedness does not. Unobstructedness says that on the side of the light there is no condition whatever able to limit it.

Then Why Do We Not See It?

This forces out the most pressing question of the passage, and the commentators of old asked it on the reader’s behalf: if the light shines throughout the measureless worlds of the ten directions, why do the people of this world not see it?

The answer is exceptionally fine, and raises two similes together:

Where the principle accords, response reaches across a thousand miles; where the ground of the mind is at odds, liver and gall, pressed close together though they are, seem as far apart as the edge of the sky. It is like one with a film over the eye who cannot see the sunlight — is the sunlight then at fault? Like one whose ears are deaf and cannot hear the thunderclap — is the thunderclap then to blame? The karmic burden of beings has grown too heavy: the Buddha has light, and people do not see it.

The direction of this answer is worth seeing clearly.

A sūtra that has come this far turns suddenly from describing that place to speaking of this one — of why we stand in the light and find the sky dark.

What Is Inside the Light

The sūtra says only “light measureless,” and describes no further. But the Tang commentator cites here a long passage from The Contemplation Sūtra, spreading out what is to be seen within that light.

That buddha’s body is the colour of a hundred thousand myriad koṭis of Yāma-heaven Jambūnada gold; its measure is six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of Gaṅgā-sands of yojanas; the white tuft between his brows curls to the right like five Mount Sumerus; his eyes are like the waters of the four great oceans, clear white and distinct; every pore of his body sends forth light as great as Mount Sumeru; his halo is like a hundred koṭis of three-thousandfold great-thousand world-systems.

And within that halo are five hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of Gaṅgā-sands of transformation-buddhas, and each transformation-buddha has innumerable transformation-bodhisattvas in attendance. That buddha has eighty-four thousand marks; each mark has eighty-four thousand excellences; each excellence has eighty-four thousand rays of light, shining throughout the measureless worlds of the ten directions.

“Because he has this light he is called Amitābha.”

This passage is brought in not for the sake of extravagant figures. It says one thing: light is not an appendage outside the Buddha’s body. Within the light there are buddhas, bodhisattvas, marks and excellences, and light sent forth again. The light is itself doing the Buddha’s work.

Xuanzang’s version, at just this place, has four characters more — “performing the Buddha’s work.” Kumārajīva’s version does not have them, but The Contemplation Sūtra as cited by the commentator supplies that sense in full.

Lifespan: A Sustaining Quality

The second reason is lifespan: “The lifespan of that buddha, and of the people of his land, is measureless and boundless asaṃkhyeya kalpas; he is therefore named Amitābha.”

Asaṃkhyeya is Sanskrit; rendered into Chinese it means “beyond all counting” — a number that cannot be counted to its end.

As for the word “lifespan,” the Cien line gives it a strictly technical definition: lifespan is the sustaining quality upon the eighth consciousness, gathered among the dharmas not concomitant with mind.

That sentence is worth reading slowly. Lifespan is not a substance, and not a stretch of time fitted onto a body; it is a kind of “sustaining” upon consciousness — the function that carries life on, portion after portion.

This is the same manner of handling as the earlier sentence, “the bliss that can be dwelt in is the feeling of pleasure concomitant with the sixth consciousness”: the “bliss” of Ultimate Bliss is reduced to a kind of feeling, and the “lifespan” of Amitābha to a kind of sustaining quality. Reading this sūtra, the Cien line always reduces a word that looks like an adjective to a mental factor that can be pointed at.

Three Further Questions

In the section on lifespan the commentator sets three questions in a row, each closer to home than the last.

The first: the bodies of that buddha and of those people alike belong to conditioned dharmas and cannot escape the drift of the four marks — arising, abiding, change, and perishing. How could they fail to wear away? Answer: the two levels of birth-and-death have been cast off and the constant body of the five aggregates gained; the vow of compassion is without limit — where should body and life come to an end? Still more, the karma of killing ceased long ago, and so the lifespan is naturally extended far.

The second: Amitābha stands in the position of the fruit, so measureless lifespan can be spoken of; but the people are still within the cause — why should they be the same as the Buddha? Answer: their karmic burden is light and their roots of good strong; since theirs is no longer a body of segmented birth and death and they have left forever the substance of coming and going, that they should be equal with the Buddha runs against nothing in principle.

The third: are the people of that land, then, segmented bodies or transformational ones? Answer: if one speaks of the recompense-land, the body is transformational; if one speaks of the transformation pure land, the segmented body has not yet been cast off.

The answer to the third question is the one most worth recording. Here the commentator sets down no settled conclusion, but speaks according to the distinction between recompense-land and transformation-land. That is followed here and both are recorded; no judgment is made in its place. Where the sūtra and the ancient masters have not settled a matter outright, to say plainly that it is unsettled is itself honesty.

Ten Kalpas

“Since Amitābha Buddha became a buddha, ten kalpas have now passed.”

One sentence, with no description and no elaboration. Coming to it, the commentator too writes only six characters: “Third, setting forth the number of kalpas since he became a buddha.”

The passage has just finished saying that the lifespan is measureless, boundless asaṃkhyeya kalpas, and immediately gives a definite figure: ten kalpas. Measureless and ten kalpas stand side by side in the same passage, and the sūtra finds no difficulty in it at all.

The one is said of that buddha’s lifespan, which has no end; the other is said of his becoming a buddha, which has a beginning. Measureless does not mean without a beginning; it means without an end.

Two Assemblies That Cannot Be Counted

Last come the hearers: “That buddha has measureless, boundless śrāvaka disciples, all of them arhats, beyond what the counting of numbers can know; and the bodhisattvas are likewise.”

Śrāvakas are so called because they awaken to the way through hearing the voice; and the word “disciple” too has its explanation — one whose years come after mine is a “younger brother,” one whose understanding is born from me is a “son.” The phrase “all of them arhats” is there to distinguish them from the prior three fruits: these have all reached the fourth.

What deserves notice is the parallel here. The śrāvakas cannot be counted, and neither can the bodhisattvas; the sūtra passes over it with four characters, “and likewise,” drawing no ranking of higher and lower.

In the introduction, when names were listed, sixteen śrāvakas came first and four bodhisattvas after. Here the two assemblies are alike measureless, alike beyond what counting can know.

The Name and This Passage

Back to the question at the opening: why one name and two reasons?

Because light and lifespan catch exactly two things. Light speaks of everywhere — there is no place it fails to reach; lifespan speaks of always — there is no moment at which it breaks off. Unobstructed in space, unending in time.

A name that is to be held and recited would leak if it held only one half of this. With light and no lifespan, it could reach one but could not wait for one; with lifespan and no light, it could wait for one but could not reach one.

And this name is the very name that the later text has one hold fast to. Before teaching anyone to hold the name, the sūtra first makes plain what is contained in it.

Carrying Forward — One Way Analyses the Substance of the Name, the Other Sings a Hymn to Lifespan

Above is the meaning of this passage itself. Below, two Tang eyes cast their light from the side — the mirror is not the sūtra; only the same buddha-name, seen through two ways of reading.

The Cien line is the reading of Kuiji’s Comprehensive Praise Commentary, and this passage is a place where he works with unusual depth. The adjudication of the two senses of the name, the division of inner and outer light, the definition of lifespan as a sustaining quality upon the eighth consciousness, and the three questions and answers (how the conditioned can be without end · why the people equal the Buddha · segmented or transformational) — the whole framework comes from here. In explaining the sense of light he cites The Sūtra of the Buddha of Measureless Life, The Great Perfection of Wisdom Treatise, and The Contemplation Sūtra; in explaining the sense of lifespan he cites The Sūtra of Measureless Life and The Sūtra of Pure Awakeningfive citations within one passage, of which the one from The Contemplation Sūtra runs ten lines, spreading out one by one the eighty-four thousand marks and excellences of that buddha’s bodily form.

And the question and answer on “the light shines everywhere yet is not seen in this land” is the core of the teaching in this passage. The two similes — the filmed eye that does not see the sunlight, the deaf ear that does not hear the thunderclap — are not in the sūtra itself but are set by the commentator; yet the principle of his answer, that the obstruction lies in the one who receives and not in what is illuminated, comes directly from the sūtra’s own words, “with nothing to obstruct it.”

The Shandao line, in the Liturgical Hymns, recites this whole passage word for word, and when the recitation is done a hymn follows: “Aspire to be born there, aspire to be born there. Gaining the fruit, one attains nirvāṇa and abides constantly in the world; the lifespan extended and long” — he does not take the two senses of light and lifespan apart, but catches the single side of “lifespan” in song: abiding constantly, extended, hard to measure. The way of doctrinal understanding defines “lifespan” as a sustaining quality upon the eighth consciousness; the way of ritual practice sings that same “lifespan” as the reason for aspiring to birth in that land.

One way takes the buddha-name apart into mental factors that can be pointed at; the other sings the buddha-name into a hymn of dedication. Both are recorded without adjudication, each returned to its own place.

Placement of the passage as a whole. This passage turns from “setting forth the adornment of the land” into “distinguishing the merits of the Buddha’s body,” and is the place where the sūtra explains the Buddha’s name for the first time. The text opens with the Buddha putting the question of his own title, answers it with the two senses of measureless light and measureless lifespan, goes on to state the ten kalpas since he became a buddha, and closes by touching on the two assemblies — śrāvakas and bodhisattvas — as beyond all counting. The two recensions differ visibly in structure: Kumārajīva’s version has one name (Amitābha) with two senses (light and lifespan), whereas Xuanzang’s divides it into two names (Measureless Life and Measureless Light), places lifespan before light, and writes “ten great kalpas.”

I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement

—“Below is the second part, the distinguishing of the merits of the Buddha’s body. The text divides into two: first, setting forth the merits of the master of the teaching; second, distinguishing the merits of the hearers. The first text divides into three: first, putting the question of the Buddha’s title; second, the direct distinguishing of how the name is obtained; third, setting forth the number of kalpas since he became a buddha.” 〔T37n1758 0341c25〕

Section of the commentaryScriptural basisAnchor
Master of the teaching 1 · putting the question of the Buddha’s title「彼佛何故號阿彌陀?」—“Why is that buddha called Amitābha?”〔T12n0366 0347a25〕
Master of the teaching 2 · the direct distinguishing of the name (light)「彼佛光明無量,照十方國無所障礙,是故號為阿彌陀。」—“That buddha’s light is measureless, shining upon the lands of the ten directions with nothing to obstruct it; he is therefore called Amitābha.”〔T12n0366 0347a26〕
Master of the teaching 2 · the direct distinguishing of the name (lifespan)「彼佛壽命及其人民,無量無邊阿僧祇劫,故名阿彌陀。」—“The lifespan of that buddha, and of the people of his land, is measureless and boundless asaṃkhyeya kalpas; he is therefore named Amitābha.”〔T12n0366 0347a27〕
Master of the teaching 3 · the number of kalpas since he became a buddha「阿彌陀佛成佛已來,於今十劫。」—“Since Amitābha Buddha became a buddha, ten kalpas have passed up to now.”〔T12n0366 0347a29〕
The hearers 1 · the two assemblies, lesser and greater, beyond all counting「彼佛有無量無邊聲聞弟子,皆阿羅漢,非是算數之所能知;諸菩薩,亦復如是。」—“That buddha has measureless and boundless śrāvaka disciples, all of them arhats, beyond what counting can know; and the bodhisattvas are likewise.”〔T12n0366 0347b01〕

The adjudication of the two senses by which the name is obtained: 「第二正辨得名。 —“Second, the direct distinguishing of how the name is obtained. And it has two senses: first, the name is obtained by reason of light; second, by reason of wisdom-life.” 〔T37n1758 0342a01〕

The outline of the hearers: 「第二辨聽眾功德。 —“Second, distinguishing the merits of the hearers. The text divides into four: first, the two assemblies, lesser and greater, being beyond all counting; second, the two groups, new and old, differing in their causal practice; third, the exhortation to be born in that land; fourth, the benefit of that birth.” 〔T37n1758 0342b22〕 — the latter three belong to the passages that follow, and this unit holds only the first of them. The outline of the number of kalpas: 「第三明成佛劫數。」—“Third, setting forth the number of kalpas since he became a buddha.” 〔T37n1758 0342b19〕

II. Collation with the Alternate Translation (T367, Xuanzang) — recorded without adjudication

PositionKumārajīva, T12n0366Xuanzang, T12n0367
Number of namesOne name, two senses: 「彼佛何故號阿彌陀?」—“Why is that buddha called Amitābha?” 〔T12n0366 0347a25〕, answered with the two matters of light and lifespan, both of which conclude 「號為阿彌陀」—“called Amitābha” and 「故名阿彌陀」—“therefore named Amitābha”Two names, each with its own answer: 「佛有何緣名無量壽?」—“For what cause is the Buddha named Measureless Life?” 〔T12n0367 0349b29〕 and 「何緣彼佛名無量光?」—“For what cause is that buddha named Measureless Light?” 〔T12n0367 0349c04〕 set two questions separately, each concluding 「彼土如來名無量壽」—“the Tathāgata of that land is named Measureless Life” and 「名無量光」—“named Measureless Light”
OrderLight before lifespan 〔T12n0366 0347a26〕Lifespan before light 〔T12n0367 0349c01〕
Lifespan「彼佛壽命及其人民,無量無邊阿僧祇劫」—“The lifespan of that buddha, and of the people of his land, is measureless and boundless asaṃkhyeya kalpas” 〔T12n0366 0347a27〕「由彼如來及諸有情,壽命無量無數大劫」—“Because the lifespan of that Tathāgata and of all sentient beings there is measureless, countless great kalpas” 〔T12n0367 0349c01〕
Light「彼佛光明無量,照十方國無所障礙」—“That buddha’s light is measureless, shining upon the lands of the ten directions with nothing to obstruct it” 〔T12n0366 0347a26〕「由彼如來恒放無量無邊妙光,遍照一切十方佛土,施作佛事無有障礙」—“Because that Tathāgata constantly sends forth measureless, boundless wondrous light, universally illuminating all the buddha-lands of the ten directions and performing the Buddha’s work without obstruction” 〔T12n0367 0349c05〕
Number of kalpas「成佛已來,於今十劫」—“Since he became a buddha, ten kalpas have passed up to now” 〔T12n0366 0347a29〕「證得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提已來經十大劫」—“Since he realized unsurpassed perfect awakening, ten great kalpas have passed” 〔T12n0367 0349c03〕
—“All are arhats, beyond what counting can know; and the bodhisattvas are likewise.” —“All of them are great arhats, complete in every kind of subtle merit; their measure is boundless and beyond reckoning.” 〔T12n0367 0349c11〕 — the bodhisattva assembly is not mentioned

Recorded without adjudication, five matters: (1) Kumārajīva has one name with two senses, Xuanzang two names each with its own answer; (2) the order of light and lifespan is reversed; (3) Xuanzang writes “ten great kalpas,” Kumārajīva “ten kalpas”; (4) Xuanzang’s statement of the sense of light adds the phrase “performing the Buddha’s work,” which Kumārajīva does not have; (5) at the close of this passage Kumārajīva raises the bodhisattva assembly as well, while Xuanzang raises the śrāvakas only. All five stand recorded together; no ranking of better and worse is imposed.

III. Scriptural and Treatise Grounding (the “eye”)

In explaining the sense of light, Kuiji cites three sūtras and one treatise, all word for word:

—“The Sūtra of the Buddha of Measureless Life says: because his body has many lights, extending even to measureless equal lights, beings who meet that light have their three defilements extinguished.” 〔T37n1758 0342a07〕
—“The Great Treatise says: as for the assemblies of bodhisattvas in Amitābha’s land, the constant light of their bodies shines a hundred thousand yojanas; as for the Buddha’s light, it shines universally upon the worlds of the ten directions.” 〔T37n1758 0342a09〕
  • 「又《觀經》云:彼佛身如百千萬億夜魔天閻浮檀金色」—“Again, The Contemplation Sūtra says: the body of that buddha is like a hundred thousand myriad koṭis of Yāma-heaven Jambūnada gold in colour” 〔T37n1758 0342a11〕 and what follows, down to 「有此光明故號阿彌陀也」—“because he has this light he is called Amitābha” 〔T37n1758 0342a20〕.

In explaining the sense of lifespan he cites two sūtras:

  • 「故《無量壽經》曰:彼佛壽命長遠不可稱計」—“hence The Sūtra of Measureless Life says: that buddha’s lifespan is long and far, beyond all reckoning” 〔T37n1758 0342b07〕
  • 「又《清淨覺經》云:阿彌陀佛欲令十方一切有情之類生其國悉至泥洹」—“again, The Sūtra of Pure Awakening says: Amitābha Buddha wishes that all classes of sentient beings of the ten directions be born in his land and all reach nirvāṇa” 〔T37n1758 0342b09〕

The substance of lifespan the commentary fixes by a Yogācāra term: 「壽命者,第八識上連持功德也,即是不相應行中攝也。」—“As for lifespan, it is the sustaining quality upon the eighth consciousness; that is, it is gathered among the formations not concomitant with mind.” 〔T37n1758 0342a27〕 — to explain “lifespan” as a sustaining quality upon the eighth consciousness, gathered among the formations not concomitant with mind, is a conspicuous instance of how the Cien mirror reads this sūtra (the Carrying-Forward line of this edition), and is of one type with unit 01’s explanation of “bliss” as the feeling of pleasure concomitant with the sixth consciousness.

IV. Essentials of the Commentary on This Passage

The two kinds of light: 「光有二種:一、內光,即智內照理;二、外光,即身光外照也。」—“Light is of two kinds: first, inner light, that is, wisdom illuminating principle within; second, outer light, that is, the light of the body illuminating outward.” 〔T37n1758 0342a03〕; what this passage speaks of is the light of the body — 「金剛不壞之體、無礙解脫之身,如淨瑠璃表裏瑩徹」—“a substance of adamant that cannot be broken, a body of unobstructed liberation, like pure beryl, lustrous and clear through inside and out” 〔T37n1758 0342a04〕.

The light shines everywhere; why then is it not seen in this land — the most important question and answer of this passage:

—“Question: If the light shines upon the measureless worlds of the ten directions, why do the people of this land not see it? Answer: Where the way accords, a response hangs across a thousand miles; where the world is at odds, liver and gall stand as far apart as Brahmā’s realm and Yue. It is as when one with a film over the eye does not see the sunlight — how should the sunlight be at fault! Or as when one who is deaf does not hear the thunderclap — the thunderclap is not to blame! The burden of beings’ karma has grown strong: the Buddha has light, and it is not seen.” 〔T37n1758 0342a20〕

The number-term of lifespan: 「阿僧祇劫者,此云無央數劫也。」—“As for asaṃkhyeya kalpas, here rendered kalpas beyond all counting.” 〔T37n1758 0342a29〕

How a conditioned body can have lifespan without end: 「答:「捨兩重生死、獲五蘊常身,悲願無邊,身命何盡?況又殺業久已、壽命延遠也!」」—“Answer: Having cast off the two levels of birth-and-death and gained the constant body of the five aggregates, his compassionate vow being boundless — how should body and life come to an end? Still more, the karma of killing ceased long ago, and so the lifespan is extended far!” 〔T37n1758 0342b02〕

How the people equal the Buddha in lifespan: 「業累輕尠、善種增強,既非分段之身,永離去來之質,與佛齊等,於理無違。」—“Their burden of karma is light and slight and their seeds of good have grown strong; since theirs is no longer a body of segmented birth and death and they have left forever the substance of coming and going, that they should be equal with the Buddha violates nothing in principle.” 〔T37n1758 0342b05〕

Whether the bodies of the people of that land are segmented or transformational: 「答:「若論報土即便變易之身,若說化淨國中分段尚猶未捨。」」—“Answer: If one speaks of the recompense-land, then the body is transformational; if one speaks of the transformation pure land, the segmented body has not yet been cast off.” 〔T37n1758 0342b15〕 — on this the commentary passes no single judgment, but differs according to recompense-land or transformation-land; the present edition follows it and records both.

The name and sense of “śrāvaka disciples”: 「聲聞弟子者,因聲悟道,故曰聲聞。 —“As for śrāvaka disciples: they awaken to the way through the voice, and so are called hearers of the voice. As for disciples: one who comes after me in years is called a younger brother; one whose understanding is born from me is called a son.” —“That all are arhats is said in order to distinguish them from the prior three fruits.” 〔T37n1758 0342b27〕

V. Divergent Readings of the Commentators (two mirrors in parallel — recorded without adjudication)

MirrorVerbatimAnchor
似聾者不聞於雷震,非雷震之有愆!」—“It is as when one with a film over the eye does not see the sunlight — how should the sunlight be at fault! Or as when one who is deaf does not hear the thunderclap — the thunderclap is not to blame!”〔T37n1758 0342a22〕
Shandao line (Shandao, Liturgical Hymns, Tang)「利弗。 That buddha’s light is measureless. It shines upon the lands of the ten directions. Nothing obstructs it. This …”〔T47n1979 0432c14〕

Shandao’s Liturgical Hymns recite this whole passage word for word, from 〔T47n1979 0432c14〕 down to 「彼佛國土。 —“That buddha’s land is accomplished in just such merits and adornments.” 〔T47n1979 0432c20〕; the recitation done, a hymn follows: 「願往生願往生。 壽命延長」—“Aspire to be born there, aspire to be born there. Gaining the fruit, one attains nirvāṇa and abides constantly in the world; the lifespan extended and long” 〔T47n1979 0432c22〕 — the praise begins from lifespan.

The Cien mirror answers the difficulty of “light everywhere and yet not seen” with two similes — the way of resolving doubt; the Shandao line recites the whole passage and sings its lifespan in a hymn — the way of ritual practice.

VI. Terms (first occurrences)

TermGround of the glossAnchor
—“And it has two senses: first, the name is obtained by reason of light; second, by reason of wisdom-life.”〔T37n1758 0342a02〕
Inner light · outer light「光有二種:一、內光,即智內照理;二、外光,即身光外照也。」—“Light is of two kinds: first, inner light, that is, wisdom illuminating principle within; second, outer light, that is, the light of the body illuminating outward.”〔T37n1758 0342a03〕
—“As for lifespan, it is the sustaining quality upon the eighth consciousness; that is, it is gathered among the formations not concomitant with mind.”〔T37n1758 0342a27〕
Asaṃkhyeya kalpas「阿僧祇劫者,此云無央數劫也。」—“As for asaṃkhyeya kalpas, here rendered kalpas beyond all counting.”〔T37n1758 0342a29〕

—“That all are arhats is said in order to distinguish them from the prior three fruits.”〔T37n1758 0342b27〕

VII. Similes and Rhetoric

  • The sūtra text itself has no simile — the whole passage is direct statement, and is composed as question and answer.
  • The mirror commentary uses two similes (the most important in this passage): 「如翳者不覩於曦光,豈曦光之有咎!似聾者不聞於雷震,非雷震之有愆!」—“It is as when one with a film over the eye does not see the sunlight — how should the sunlight be at fault! Or as when one who is deaf does not hear the thunderclap — the thunderclap is not to blame!” 〔T37n1758 0342a22〕 — the filmed eye and the deaf ear are raised together, and both explain “shining everywhere and yet not seen” by the obstruction in the one who receives, not by any deficiency in the light.
  • A further simile: 「如淨瑠璃表裏瑩徹」—“like pure beryl, lustrous and clear through inside and out” 〔T37n1758 0342a05〕 — describing the unobstructed, liberated substance of the Buddha’s body.
  • Rhetoric: this passage is the second place in the sūtra where the Buddha puts a question and answers it himself (the first is in unit 01, 「彼土何故名為極樂」—“why is that land named Ultimate Bliss”). Question, answer, question again, answer again: the two senses stand in parallel and each concludes with the name; the sentence pattern is symmetrical.

VIII. Citation and Carrying Forward

  • The larger sūtra as witness, in two places 〔T37n1758 0342a07〕〔T37n1758 0342b07〕 — the point of parallel reading within this corpus: canon/jingtu/wuliangshou/.
  • The Contemplation Sūtra as witness 〔T37n1758 0342a11〕 — the point of parallel reading within this axis: canon/jingtu/guanjing/. Five occurrences across four units (01 the trees and nets, 02 the pool waters, 03 the two citations at the musical instruments and the golden ground, 05 the marks of light of the Buddha’s body; and in 07 one further occurrence, 「滅除八十億劫生死之罪」—“extinguishing the sins of eight billion kalpas of birth and death”) — which is the constant of the mutual reading of the sūtras of this axis.
  • The Great Perfection of Wisdom Treatise as witness 〔T37n1758 0342a09〕 — a treatise of the prajñā axis entering a Pure Land commentary: a cross-axis point of carrying forward (as with unit 03’s citation of the Lotus Sūtra).
  • Of citation of this passage by the remaining volumes of this corpus, nothing is found (the whole canon/ tree has been searched).

IX. Placement Among the Recensions

The Taishō collation notes (<app>) record one instance within this unit:

AnchorBase textVariantWitnesses
0347b02「薩」—“[bodhi]sattva”薩眾 (“sattva-assembly”)Song · Yuan · Ming · circulation

The text Kuiji used still runs in the same stream as Song–Yuan–Ming: his citation of the sūtra reads 「諸菩薩眾亦復如是」—“the assemblies of bodhisattvas are likewise” 〔T37n1758 0342b21〕, which is precisely the 「薩眾」 of the variant column. Shandao’s recited text also reads 「諸菩薩眾。 —“The assemblies of bodhisattvas. Likewise.” 〔T47n1979 0432c19〕 here — the two mirrors run in one stream at this point, of the same type as “saṅgha / assembly” in 00 and 「而雨」 in 03 (whereas “white swan” in 04 parts ways). Recorded without adjudication; not one character of the base text is altered on that account.

A further small divergence in the commentary’s citation of the sūtra: the commentary reads 「皆是阿羅漢」—“all are arhats” 〔T37n1758 0342b20〕 where the sūtra reads 「皆阿羅漢」—“all arhats” 〔T12n0366 0347b01〕 — one character 「是」 more; the collation notes have no entry for it, recorded without adjudication.
