The third contemplation is the shortest, and it divides seeing into two layers.
Someone Is Still Doing the Imaging
“Once the image of water is accomplished, this is called roughly seeing the ground of the land of Ultimate Bliss.”
The contemplation before had already seen that ground shining through within and without; here it says only roughly seen.
Rough does not mean not seen. It means that the manner of the seeing is still imaging — within the mind there is still one who looks, and something looked at.
It Cannot Be Told in Full
“If one attains samādhi and sees the ground of that land clear and distinct, it is beyond anything that words can tell in full.”
The difference is not that the object has grown finer; it is that the side which sees has changed: the imaging mind has come to rest, and discursive concerns have vanished.
The two contemplations before laid out description upon description — a koṭi of thousands of suns, a dais of light, eighty-four thousand colours — and here, all at once, description stops.
The sūtra marks the arrival at that layer by saying that it cannot be told to the end.
Two Sentences, Two Requests
In the introduction Vaidehī asked for two things: “teach me to reflect,” “teach me right reception.”
The two sentences of this contemplation take them up one by one, exactly as they were asked. And here the bound of the good done in concentration is drawn.
The Sentence After the Offences Are Removed
“If one contemplates this ground, the offences of eighty koṭis of kalpas of birth-and-death are removed.”
Not until the third contemplation is the extinction of offences spoken of at all.
And after the number comes one sentence more: “Casting off this body, in another life one will surely be born in the pure land, and the mind attains freedom from doubt.”
The extinction of offences is not where this lands. That the mind should no longer keep by it that question, is it really so? — that is.

Translated in the Liu Song by Kālayaśas, The Sūtra Spoken by the Buddha on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life, T12n0365, the third of the thirteen contemplations of the good done in concentration, from “The Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehī” down to “to make another contemplation is called wrong contemplation.” The figures at the head of each segment give the Taishō page, register, and line.
〔一 · Distinguishing the Sign That the Contemplation Is Accomplished〕(0342a22)The Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehī: “Once the image of water is accomplished, this is called roughly seeing the ground of the land of Ultimate Bliss (roughly seen is seeing within the imaging mind, thought and conception being still present; what is seen then is the manifold adornments of the twofold recompense of that land, dependent and direct, the dimness of confusion already removed but not yet wholly gone). If one attains samādhi and sees the ground of that land clear and distinct, it is beyond anything that words can tell in full (the imaging mind grows gradually subtler, conceptual thought is removed all at once, right reception corresponds with the mind and one realizes samādhi; then one truly sees the subtle and wondrous matters of that object — how could they be told in full?).
〔二 · General Conclusion〕(0342a24)This is called the image of the ground, and it is named the third contemplation.”
〔三 · Exhorting and Rousing to Transmission〕(0342a26)The Buddha told Ānanda: “Hold the Buddha’s words, and for the great assembly of all the ages to come who wish to be freed from suffering, teach this method of contemplating the ground (for whoever wishes to cast off this body of birth-and-death in the Sahā world, and to escape the eight sufferings, the five sufferings, and the sufferings of the three evil destinies, and who trusts and is willing to practise as soon as he hears it — for him, without sparing body or life, teach it at once; and if a single person can cast off suffering and come out of birth-and-death, this is what is called truly repaying the Buddha’s kindness).
〔四 · Showing the Benefit of the Contemplation〕(0342a27)If one contemplates this ground, the offences of eighty koṭis of kalpas of birth-and-death are removed (what is contemplated is a jeweled ground free of outflows, and so it can remove offences of many kalpas that are with outflows). Casting off this body, in another life one will surely be born in the pure land, and the mind attains freedom from doubt (the right mindfulness with which the cause is cultivated may not have doubt mixed into it; one who is born there with doubt mixed in is held within the flower and does not come out, or is born in the border region, or falls into a palace-womb).
〔五 · Distinguishing the Contemplation as Wrong or Right〕(0342a28)To make this contemplation is called right contemplation; to make another contemplation is called wrong contemplation.”
The third contemplation is one of the shortest passages in the whole sūtra: one hundred and thirty-seven characters.
Yet it does three things no other contemplation does: it divides seeing into two layers; it states for the first time a number of kalpas of offences extinguished; and the Buddha calls Ānanda aside by name to charge him that this teaching be handed on.
Shandao’s Commentary on the Contemplation Sūtra in Four Fascicles judges this contemplation in six segments, the text of the first two of which in fact still lies at the end of the contemplation before — he reads the third contemplation as beginning at “when this image is accomplished.” Zhiyi’s Commentary on the Sūtra on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life judges it in four: the gradual image-contemplation, the actual contemplation, the benefit, and showing the contemplation to be wrong or right. The two houses judge differently, and each keeps its reasons in its own book. What is set out below is the sūtra.
Roughly Seen
The sūtra says: “Once the image of water is accomplished, this is called roughly seeing the ground of the land of Ultimate Bliss.”
The contemplation before had already seen the ground of beryl shining through within and without; here it says only “roughly seen.”
The readings handed down gloss it finely: when the mind is gathered without a break, one sees the appearance of the Pure Land; this is called seeing within the imaging mind, because thought and conception are still present.
Which is to say: that object has indeed come to stand present, but the manner of its presence is still imaging — you thought it out, and you know that you are thinking it. There is still someone looking within the mind, and something looked at.
Hence it is called rough.
Rough does not mean bad. It is really seen, and the dimness of confusion is already lessened by that much; only there is still one layer of imaging in between.
Nor is this roughness had for the asking. Before the mind gathered without a break, the readings handed down set out four things: the mind must first mark out one object and may not contemplate them jumbled together; the mind being fixed upon a single object, the object appears of itself, and once it has appeared it must be made clear and distinct; the object having appeared to the mind, whether the eyes are closed or open it is to be guarded and not lost; and in the four bearings of the body one recollects constantly, day and night, excepting only the time of sleeping, holding it in memory and not letting go. Only when those four are in place does the fifth, the gathering of the mind without a break, come into question at all. What is called roughly seen is where this whole course of practice lands; it is not there the moment one sits down.
Clear and Distinct
The sentence that follows carries the weight of this contemplation: “If one attains samādhi and sees the ground of that land clear and distinct, it is beyond anything that words can tell in full.”
The readings handed down: the imaging mind grows gradually subtler, conceptual thought is removed all at once, right reception corresponds and one realizes samādhi — and then one truly sees the subtle and wondrous matters of that object; how could they be told in full?
The difference between the two layers is not that the object has grown finer. It is that the side which sees has changed.
In the first layer there is still someone imaging; in the second the imaging mind has come to rest, discursive concerns have vanished, and nothing is left but correspondence.
And to describe that second layer the sūtra uses a negation: it cannot be told in full.
The two contemplations before laid out description upon description — a koṭi of thousands of suns, a dais of light, towers by the thousand and the myriad, eighty-four thousand colours — and here, all at once, description stops. Not because there is nothing more to say, but because the saying cannot be finished. The sūtra marks the arrival at that layer by saying that it cannot be told to the end.
The readings handed down add a sentence here on why that ground cannot be told in full: the ground is broad and without bound, the jeweled banners are not one alone, the manifold treasures blaze with colour, and their turnings and changes grow ever more numerous. It is not that words of description have run out; it is that the thing described is still changing. And precisely for that reason beings are exhorted to incline their whole minds toward it, and to keep it constantly as though before their eyes.
Two Sentences Answering Two Requests
The weight of this contemplation within the whole sūtra far exceeds its number of characters.
In the introduction Vaidehī asked for two things: teach me to reflect, teach me right reception.
The readings handed down match those two requests, one by one, back to this contemplation: “one who forms an image in this way is said roughly to have seen the land of Ultimate Bliss” answers to “teach me to reflect” — reflection being the expedient prior to contemplation, the thinking out of the general and the particular characteristics of the twofold recompense of that land, dependent and direct; and “if one attains samādhi and sees the ground of that land clear and distinct” answers to “teach me right reception” — right reception being that the imaging mind wholly rests, discursive concerns all vanish, and there is correspondence with samādhi.
The commentators of old declared expressly that such a reading differs from that of the other masters. The others matched the sentence on reflection with the three kinds of merit and the nine grades, taking it as the good done in a scattered mind, and matched the sentence on right reception throughout with the sixteen contemplations, taking it as the good done in concentration. He does not agree, and his reason lies in this very passage: the Flower Ornament Sūtra says, “reflection and right reception are but a different name for samādhi,” which agrees with this text on the contemplation of the ground; and since that is so, how could the sentence on reflection be carried over to the side of the good done in a scattered mind?
And so these hundred and thirty-seven characters became the textual ground for the bound of the good done in concentration. “From the contemplation of the sun down to the thirteenth contemplation is called the good done in concentration” — and where that line is drawn depends upon the two sentences here.
Eighty Koṭis of Kalpas
“If one contemplates this ground, the offences of eighty koṭis of kalpas of birth-and-death are removed.”
The sixteen contemplations have come as far as the third, and words on the extinction of offences appear for the first time. Neither of the two before had them.
Why this contemplation and no other?
The two houses answer differently, and in answering they show each other up.
One line says: because what is contemplated is a jeweled ground free of outflows, it can remove offences of many kalpas that are with outflows. The object is free of outflows and the offences are with outflows; by that this is removed.
The other says: the water before was image and cannot extinguish offences; the contemplation of the ground is actual, and so can cut them off. The difference lies not in the substance of the object but in whether the contemplation is empty or actual.
One speaks from the thing contemplated, the other from the degree of the contemplating. The sūtra itself explains nothing; it gives only the number.
And after the number comes a sentence that matters more: “Casting off this body, in another life one will surely be born in the pure land, and the mind attains freedom from doubt.”
The extinction of offences is not the terminus. The mind’s attaining freedom from doubt is.
Doubt
Upon those words — the mind attains freedom from doubt — the readings handed down set a heavy note.
The right mindfulness with which the cause is cultivated may not have doubt mixed into it. One who is born there with doubt mixed in is born there all the same — but he is held within the flower and does not come out, or is born in the border region, or falls into a palace-womb.
This is a rarely stated thing: doubt does not obstruct birth in that land; doubt obstructs seeing the Buddha. You get there; only, having arrived, you must still wait.
Wait until when? Until a bodhisattva of great compassion enters the samādhi that opens the flowers; then the obstruction of doubt is removed, the palace-flowers open, the bodily form stands plain, and companions in the Dharma take him by the hand to go to the assembly of the Buddha.
So the benefit of this contemplation is not only the removal of the offences of eighty koṭis of kalpas. It includes one thing more: that the mind should no longer keep by it that question, is it really so?
Taught for the Ages to Come
In the middle of this passage the Buddha suddenly calls Ānanda aside alone.
“Hold the Buddha’s words, and for the great assembly of all the ages to come who wish to be freed from suffering, teach this method of contemplating the ground.”
The two contemplations before were spoken to Ānanda and Vaidehī together; here for the first time they are divided — Vaidehī has use for it before his very eyes, while Ānanda is charged with carrying it to those who come after.
The readings handed down state very bluntly here what the buddhas’ appearing in the world is for: when the buddhas appear and by manifold expedients exhort and transform beings, it is not that they wish people merely to restrain evil and cultivate merit so as to enjoy the pleasures of gods and men. The pleasure of gods and men is like a flash of lightning: in a moment it is gone, and one enters again the three evil destinies to undergo suffering for a long time.
So the sifting is strict: those who wish to cast off this body of birth-and-death, to escape the eight sufferings, the five sufferings and the sufferings of the three evil destinies, and who trust and are willing to practise as soon as they hear — for such, without sparing body or life, teach it at once. If a single person can cast off suffering and come out of birth-and-death, this is called truly repaying the Buddha’s kindness.
One person. That is the figure the ancients set for repaying the Buddha’s kindness.
And after the sifting, the readings handed down cite a sūtra to speak of two kinds of people.
The one: he hears the gate of the Pure Land taught, and hears as though he had not heard, sees as though he had not seen. Such a one has but now come from the three evil destinies; the obstruction of his offences is not yet exhausted, and so no trust or inclination toward it arises in him.
The other: he hears the gate of the Pure Land taught, and on the instant sorrow and joy course through him together and the hair of his body stands up. Such a one has in the past already cultivated this Dharma; hearing it again now, he gives rise to joy, and practising in right mindfulness he will surely be born there.
Both passages say one thing: our first response to this teaching is not something that began in this life.
And the sūtra itself says none of that. The sūtra sets only one condition — for all the ages to come, whoever wishes to be freed from suffering. To wish to be freed from suffering is enough.
The Same Measuring Rod, Taken Out a Third Time
This passage closes upon a sentence already heard: “To make this contemplation is called right contemplation; to make another contemplation is called wrong contemplation.”
The first contemplation ended with just this sentence. So did the second, with only one character altered in the phrase for making it — a difference of a single character, and the same judgment. Here it is the third time.
The readings handed down do not gloss it again when they reach this place; they write only that the meaning of wrong and right has already been stated in the contemplation of the sun. The words are few, yet both houses still set up a separate topic here to mark it. That one judgment recurs does not turn it into a formula; on the contrary, contemplation after contemplation from here on takes it up and measures afresh with it.
And within this one short passage the one addressed changes three times.
First the Buddha tells Ānanda and Vaidehī, and what he speaks of is the sign that the contemplation is accomplished — spoken to those seated before him. Next the Buddha addresses Ānanda alone, and what he speaks of is the carrying of this teaching into the future — spoken for those not yet born. Last, all at once, no one is named, and only a judgment is left: contemplating in this way is right, contemplating otherwise is wrong.
From the method contemplated it turns into entrustment, and then turns back to the criterion. This turn will be seen again and again in the sūtra from here on.
And through all three turns, the measuring rod itself has not moved. Those seated before him are measured by it, and so are the people of the ages to come.
Carrying Forward — Two Eyes on the Same Ground
The above is the meaning of this passage of the sūtra itself. Below, two eyes, one of the Sui and one of the Tang, cast their light from the side — the mirror is not the sūtra; only the same ground, seen through two ways of reading.
The Shandao line is the reading of the Commentary on the Contemplation Sūtra in Four Fascicles. He reads this contemplation as the pivot of the whole sūtra: in the Section on the Profound Meaning he cites this passage verbatim twice, using it to match Vaidehī’s two requests back to the text of the sūtra, using it to draw the bound between the good done in concentration and the good done in a scattered mind, and on that ground declaring that he differs from the other masters. He opens the sign of accomplishment into six matters, of which the fifth glosses roughly seen as seeing within the imaging mind, thought and conception being still present, and the sixth glosses samādhi as the imaging mind growing subtler, conceptual thought removed all at once, and right reception corresponding — the division into two layers comes from him. So does the attaching of the extinction of offences to an object free of outflows, and the threefold mark of the obstruction of doubt: held within the flower and not coming out, born in the border region, fallen into a palace-womb. And he reads this contemplation as beginning at “when this image is accomplished,” earlier than the sūtra’s own division of the text.
The Zhiyi line is the reading of the Commentary on the Sūtra on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life. He judges four segments, and by the two names gradual image-contemplation and actual contemplation marks out the very same two layers. His judgment on the extinction of offences is brief, yet it is one of the plain threads of his book: the water before was image and cannot extinguish offences; the contemplation of the ground is actual, and so can cut them off. At the first contemplation he had already said that this course of contemplations is for removing the doubting mind; and here, where the sūtra says that the mind attains freedom from doubt, the two places meet exactly.
One line reads this ground as the standing-place from which the whole sūtra is judged; the other reads it as the one step that leads from image to actuality.
And the sūtra itself has said only this: clear and distinct, beyond anything that words can tell in full.
考據Apparatus
夾註(place="inline" note):本單元零命中。
Placement of the passage as a whole. This unit is the third of the sixteen contemplations; the whole passage runs to one hundred and thirty-seven characters and is one of the shortest among the sixteen. The sūtra first distinguishes two layers in the sign that the contemplation is accomplished — 「粗見」 (roughly seen) and 「若得三昧,見彼國地,了了分明」 (if one attains samādhi and sees the ground of that land clear and distinct) — and gathers them up as the image of the ground, the third contemplation; next the Buddha addresses Ānanda apart, charging him to hold the Buddha’s words and to teach this method of contemplating the ground for the ages to come; and last it sets out the benefit of this contemplation (the removal of the offences of eighty koṭis of kalpas of birth-and-death, birth in the pure land when the body is cast off, and the mind’s attaining freedom from doubt) and judges right from wrong. The weight of this unit within the whole sūtra far exceeds its number of characters: in the Section on the Profound Meaning, Shandao’s Commentary in Four Fascicles takes precisely the two sentences of this passage and matches them, sentence by sentence, to Vaidehī’s request 「教我思惟」 (teach me to reflect) and 「教我正受」 (teach me right reception) — 「粗見」 answering to reflection, and 「若得三昧,見彼國地,了了分明」 answering to right reception — and upon this he judges the bound of the good done in concentration, differing from the other masters. This contemplation is also the first among the sixteen in which a text on the extinction of offences appears, and on its account Zhiyi sets up the judgment 「前水是想,不能滅罪。地觀是實,故能除斷」 (the water before was image and cannot extinguish offences; the contemplation of the ground is actual, and so can cut them off). There are two items of collation; see the ninth topic.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
Shandao’s Commentary in Four Fascicles divides this contemplation into six segments:
—“Third, within the contemplation that forms the image of the ground there is likewise first the raising, next the distinguishing, and last the conclusion — there are six in all” 〔T37n1753 0263c06〕.
| The commentary’s six segments | The commentary’s marked span (verbatim) | Anchor | Segment in this edition’s Plain Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Closing what precedes and giving rise to what follows | 「一、從此想成時者,正明結前生後。」—“First, ‘when this image is accomplished’ directly clarifies the closing of what precedes and the giving rise to what follows.” | 〔T37n1753 0263c07〕 | (in the previous unit, 〔七〕) |
| 2 · Distinguishing the sign that the contemplation is accomplished | 「二、從一一觀之下,至不可具說已來,正明辨觀成相。 —“Second, from ‘contemplate them one by one’ down to ‘cannot be told in full,’ directly clarifies the distinguishing of the sign that the contemplation is accomplished — there are six in all.” | 〔T37n1753 0263c07〕 | (the previous unit’s 〔七〕) + 〔一〕 |
| 3 · General conclusion | 「三、從是為下,總結。」—“Third, from ‘this is’ onward is the general conclusion.”
—“Fourth, from ‘the Buddha told Ānanda’ down to ‘teach this method of contemplating the ground,’ directly clarifies the exhorting and rousing to transmission, teaching it widely as conditions allow — there are four in all.”
| 5 · Showing the benefit of the contemplation | 「五、從若觀是地者下,至心得無疑已來,正明顯觀利益。 —“Fifth, from ‘if one contemplates this ground’ down to ‘the mind attains freedom from doubt,’ directly clarifies the showing forth of the benefit of the contemplation — there are four in all.”
| 6 · Distinguishing the contemplation as wrong or right | 「六、從作是觀已下,正明辨觀邪正。 —“Sixth, from ‘makes this contemplation’ onward directly clarifies the distinguishing of the contemplation as wrong or right. The meaning of wrong and right has already been stated in the contemplation of the sun above. Although the six sentences above differ among themselves, the extensive clarification of the contemplation of the ground is herewith finished.”
The difference in the unit boundary (recorded without adjudication) — Shandao’s contemplation that forms the image of the ground begins at 「此想成時」 (when this image is accomplished), so that the text of his first and second segments falls before the unit boundary of this edition (gathered into segment 〔七〕 of the previous unit). The unit boundaries of this edition follow the sections of the Taishō text itself, and so this unit begins below 「佛告阿難及韋提希」 (the Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehī), at 「水想成已」 (once the image of water is accomplished). The two boundaries differ, and this is recorded verbatim, with no judgment as to which is right; the difference bears upon the first item of variant reading in the ninth topic.
The six matters in distinguishing the sign that the contemplation is accomplished (opened up in the commentary’s second segment; the text of the first four matters lies in the previous unit):
| Matter | The commentary verbatim | Anchor |
|---|---|---|
—“The first clarifies that the mind marks out one single object, and that they may not be contemplated all jumbled together.” | 〔T37n1753 0263c09〕 |
—“The second clarifies that, the mind being fixed upon a single object, the object then appears before one; and once it has appeared, it must be made clear and distinct.” | 〔T37n1753 0263c10〕 |
—“The third clarifies that, the object having appeared to the mind, whether the eyes are closed or open it is to be guarded and not lost.” | 〔T37n1753 0263c11〕 |
—“The fourth clarifies that in the four bearings of the body one recollects constantly, day and night, and, only excepting the time of sleeping, holds it in memory without letting go.” | 〔T37n1753 0263c12〕 |
—“The fifth clarifies that when the mind is gathered without a break one sees the appearance of the Pure Land; this is called seeing within the imaging mind, because thought and conception are still present.” | 〔T37n1753 0263c13〕 |
—“The sixth clarifies that the imaging mind grows gradually subtler, that conceptual thought is removed all at once, and that right reception corresponds and one realizes samādhi; then one truly sees the subtle and wondrous matters of that object — how could they be told in full?” | 〔T37n1753 0263c14〕 |
The fifth matter glosses 「粗見」; the sixth glosses 「若得三昧,見彼國地,了了分明,不可具說」 — the sign that the contemplation is accomplished is here divided into two layers: seeing within the imaging mind, and the correspondence of right reception.
Below the sixth matter the commentary goes on to gloss why it is 「不可具說」 (cannot be told in full), and closes by exhorting beings to incline their minds: 「斯乃地廣無邊,寶幢非一,眾珍曜彩,轉變彌多。 —“For the ground is broad and without bound, the jeweled banners are not one alone, the manifold treasures blaze with colour, and their turnings and changes grow ever more numerous. Therefore he exhorts beings to incline their minds, and to keep it constantly as though before their eyes” 〔T37n1753 0263c16〕.
The witness column · Zhiyi’s outline of this passage (recorded without adjudication):
—“The third, the contemplation of the ground. The text has four parts: first, the gradual image-contemplation. From ‘if one attains samādhi’ onward is the second, the actual contemplation. From ‘the Buddha told’ onward clarifies the benefit. From ‘makes this contemplation’ onward shows the contemplation to be wrong or right” 〔T37n1750 0192a03〕.
By the two names 「漸想觀」 (the gradual image-contemplation) and 「實觀」 (the actual contemplation) Zhiyi answers to Shandao’s 「想心中見」 (seeing within the imaging mind) and 「正受相應」 (the correspondence of right reception): the two houses set up different names, and the division they point to is the same. Recorded without adjudication.
II. Collation with the Alternate Translations — recorded without adjudication
There is no second Chinese translation of this sūtra — there is no alternate translation against which to collate. Recorded honestly.
Parallel texts in the other sūtras of this same axis (not alternate translations; recorded without adjudication) — the ground of this passage is present in The Amitābha Sūtra, T12n0366, and in The Sūtra on Praising the Pure Land and the Buddha’s Embrace, T12n0367, but the contemplation of it is not:
| Matter | The Amitābha Sūtra T12n0366 | Anchor | The Sūtra on Praising the Pure Land and the Buddha’s Embrace T12n0367 | Anchor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The ground of that land | 「彼佛國土,常作天樂,黃金為地」—“in that buddha-land celestial music is constantly played; gold forms the ground” | 〔T12n0366 0347a07〕 | 「周遍大地真金合成,其觸柔軟,香潔光明,無量無邊妙寶間飾。」—“The whole earth throughout is composed of true gold; to the touch it is soft, fragrant, clean and luminous, inlaid with measureless, boundless wondrous jewels.” | 〔T12n0367 0349a17〕 |
Neither sūtra has any text on the extinction of offences — the whole of The Amitābha Sūtra, T12n0366, and of The Sūtra on Praising the Pure Land and the Buddha’s Embrace, T12n0367, has been searched: there are no words 「八十億劫」 (eighty koṭis of kalpas), 「生死之罪」 (the offences of birth-and-death), or 「除罪」 (removing offences), nor any text of 「三昧」 (samādhi) or 「粗見」 (roughly seen). The teaching of a number of kalpas of offences removed belongs to this sūtra alone. Recorded honestly.
III. Scriptural and Treatise Grounding (the “eye”)
This passage is where the scriptural warrant for the two senses 「思惟」 and 「正受」 stands — in the Section on the Profound Meaning, distinguishing the differences within the good done in concentration, Shandao takes this passage sentence by sentence as his text:
—“As for ‘reflection,’ it is the expedient prior to contemplation: to think out the general and the particular characteristics of the twofold recompense, dependent and direct, of that land. That is, the text of the contemplation of the ground says, ‘one who forms an image in this way is said roughly to have seen the land of Ultimate Bliss,’ and this answers to the sentence above, ‘teach me to reflect’” 〔T37n1753 0247b28〕. —“As for ‘right reception,’ the imaging mind wholly rests and discursive concerns all vanish; correspondence with samādhi is called right reception. That is, the text of the contemplation of the ground says, ‘if one attains samādhi and sees the ground of that land clear and distinct,’ and this answers to the sentence above, ‘teach me right reception’” 〔T37n1753 0247c02〕.
And upon this he differs from the other masters:
—“Further, the explanation given here differs from that of the other masters. The other masters take the sentence on reflection and match it with the three kinds of merit and the nine grades as the good done in a scattered mind, and take the sentence on right reception and match it throughout with the sixteen contemplations as the good done in concentration. Such an explanation, I would say, is not so” 〔T37n1753 0247c05〕. —“As the Flower Ornament Sūtra says, ‘reflection and right reception are but different names for samādhi,’ and this agrees with the present text of the contemplation of the ground. With this text as warrant, how could it be extended to the good done in a scattered mind?” 〔T37n1753 0247c09〕.
The scriptural warrant thus comes from the Flower Ornament Sūtra, and what makes that text usable here is precisely that it 「與此地觀文同」 (agrees with the present text of the contemplation of the ground) — this passage is the textual ground of Shandao’s judgment of the good done in concentration. The bound of that good is likewise set here: 「從日觀下至十三觀已來名為定善。 —“From the contemplation of the sun down to the thirteenth contemplation is called the good done in concentration. The three kinds of merit and the nine grades are called the good done in a scattered mind” 〔T37n1753 0247b23〕.
Two scriptural warrants cited where transmission is exhorted — below 「說是觀地法」 (teach this method of contemplating the ground) the commentary sifts capacities and cites The Sūtra of Pure Awakening as its witness:
—“As The Sūtra of Pure Awakening says: ‘If there be one who hears the gate of the Pure Land taught, and hears as though he had not heard, sees as though he had not seen, know that such as these have but now come from the three evil destinies, that the obstruction of their offences is not yet exhausted, and that for this reason they have no trust or inclination toward it. The Buddha said: I declare that this person cannot yet gain liberation.’” 〔T37n1753 0264a02〕. —“This sūtra says further: ‘If a person hears the gate of the Pure Land taught, and on hearing it sorrow and joy course through him together and the hair of his body stands up, know that this person has in the past already cultivated this Dharma. Hearing it again now, he at once gives rise to joy; and practising in right mindfulness he will surely be born there.’” 〔T37n1753 0264a05〕.
What Zhiyi attaches to this contemplation is his judgment on the extinction of offences: 「前水是想,不能滅罪。 —“The water before was image and cannot extinguish offences. The contemplation of the ground is actual, and so can cut them off” 〔T37n1750 0192a05〕. The ground on which this judgment rests differs from that of Shandao’s 「二明因觀無漏之寶地,能除有漏多劫罪也」—“the second clarifies that, because what is contemplated is a jeweled ground free of outflows, it can remove the offences of many kalpas that are with outflows” 〔T37n1753 0264a11〕: Zhiyi attaches it to the difference between image and actuality, Shandao to the difference between what is free of outflows and what is with outflows. Recorded without adjudication.
IV. Essentials of the Commentary on This Passage (the Commentary in Four Fascicles, line by line)
The two layers in the sign of accomplishment (see the fifth and sixth matters in the first topic).
The four matters in exhorting and rousing to transmission:
—“The first clarifies the calling and the charge. The second clarifies the exhortation to hold the Buddha’s words and to teach widely, for the great assembly of the ages to come, the benefit of the contemplation of the ground taught above” 〔T37n1753 0263c20〕. —“The third clarifies the sifting of capacities: those able to receive and able to trust, who wish to cast off this body of birth-and-death in the Sahā world with its eight sufferings, its five sufferings, and the sufferings of the three evil destinies, and who trust and practise as soon as they hear — for such, without sparing body or life, teach it to them at once” 〔T37n1753 0263c21〕. —“If a single person can cast off suffering and come out of birth-and-death, this is called truly repaying the Buddha’s kindness” 〔T37n1753 0263c24〕.
Here the commentary states further what the buddhas’ appearing in the world is really for:
—“Why so? When the buddhas appear in the world and by manifold expedients exhort and transform sentient beings, it is not that they wish merely to have them restrain evil and cultivate merit so as to enjoy the pleasures of gods and men” 〔T37n1753 0263c25〕. 「人天之樂猶如電光,須臾即捨,還入三惡長時受苦」—“The pleasure of gods and men is like a flash of lightning: in a moment it is cast off, and one enters again the three evil destinies to undergo suffering for a long time” 〔T37n1753 0263c27〕.
The four matters in showing the benefit of the contemplation:
| Matter | The commentary verbatim | Anchor |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · The method points only to contemplating the jeweled ground | 「一明指法唯觀寶地,不論餘境。」—“The first clarifies that the method points only to contemplating the jeweled ground, and does not treat of other objects.” | 〔T37n1753 0264a11〕 |
| 2 · What is free of outflows removes what is with outflows | 「二明因觀無漏之寶地,能除有漏多劫罪也。」—“The second clarifies that, because what is contemplated is a jeweled ground free of outflows, it can remove the offences of many kalpas that are with outflows.” | 〔T37n1753 0264a11〕 |
| 3 · The body cast off, birth in the pure land | 「三明捨身已後必生淨土。」—“The third clarifies that after this body is cast off one will surely be born in the pure land.” | 〔T37n1753 0264a13〕 |
| 4 · No doubt may be mixed in | 「四明修因正念不得雜疑,雖得往生含華未出、或生邊界,或墮宮胎。」—“The fourth clarifies that the right mindfulness with which the cause is cultivated may not be mixed with doubt: though such a one gains birth in that land, he is held within the flower and does not come out, or is born in the border region, or falls into a palace-womb.” | 〔T37n1753 0264a13〕 |
Below the fourth matter the commentary goes on to make clear that the obstruction of doubt is in the end removed: 「或因大悲菩薩入開華三昧,疑障乃除,宮華開發身相顯然,法侶携將遊於佛會。」—“Or, through a bodhisattva of great compassion entering the samādhi that opens the flowers, the obstruction of doubt is then removed, the palace-flowers open, his bodily form stands plain, and companions in the Dharma take him by the hand to go to the assembly of the Buddha” 〔T37n1753 0264a15〕; and it gathers up the sense:
—“Thus, pouring the mind into the seeing of the jeweled ground, one extinguishes the obstructions of old and the offences that overstep. The work of vow and practice being already complete, when life ends there is no doubt of going there” 〔T37n1753 0264a17〕.
The judgment of wrong and right is not glossed again: 「邪正義者,前日觀中已說。」—“The meaning of wrong and right has already been stated in the contemplation of the sun above” 〔T37n1753 0264a20〕.
V. Divergent Readings of the Commentators (in parallel columns — recorded without adjudication)
| Point | Shandao, Commentary in Four Fascicles (Tang) | Anchor | Zhiyi’s commentary (Sui, Tiantai) | Anchor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The name of this contemplation | 「就地想觀中」—“within the contemplation that forms the image of the ground” | 〔T37n1753 0263c06〕 | 「第三地觀」—“the third, the contemplation of the ground” | 〔T37n1750 0192a03〕 |
| The division | Six segments | 〔T37n1753 0263c06〕 | Four segments (the gradual image-contemplation · the actual contemplation · the benefit · showing the contemplation to be wrong or right) | 〔T37n1750 0192a03〕 |
| The names given to the two layers of accomplishment | 「想心中見,猶有覺想」—“seeing within the imaging mind, thought and conception being still present” 〔T37n1753 0263c14〕 / 「正受相應證於三昧」—“right reception corresponds and one realizes samādhi” | 〔T37n1753 0263c15〕 | 「漸想觀」—“the gradual image-contemplation” 〔T37n1750 0192a03〕 / 「實觀」—“the actual contemplation” | 〔T37n1750 0192a04〕 |
| Why this contemplation can extinguish offences | 「因觀無漏之寶地,能除有漏多劫罪也。」—“because what is contemplated is a jeweled ground free of outflows, it can remove the offences of many kalpas that are with outflows” — attached to freedom from outflows | 〔T37n1753 0264a12〕 | 「前水是想,不能滅罪。 —“The water before was image and cannot extinguish offences. The contemplation of the ground is actual, and so can cut them off” — attached to actuality | 〔T37n1750 0192a05〕 |
| This passage and Vaidehī’s request | Matched sentence by sentence to 「教我思惟」—“teach me to reflect” 〔T37n1753 0247c01〕 and 「教我正受」—“teach me right reception” | 〔T37n1753 0247c04〕 | He does not match this passage to the request | — |
| The mark of one who is born there with the obstruction of doubt | 「雖得往生含華未出、或生邊界,或墮宮胎。」—“though such a one gains birth in that land, he is held within the flower and does not come out, or is born in the border region, or falls into a palace-womb.” | 〔T37n1753 0264a14〕 | At the first contemplation, that of the sun, he cites the larger sūtra to clarify that one born there with a doubting mind 「落在邊地,復受胎生」—“falls into the border region and further undergoes womb-birth” | 〔T37n1750 0191c19〕 |
The two houses judge the reason for the extinction of offences plainly differently: Shandao holds that because the object contemplated is free of outflows it can remove offences that are with outflows, and so establishes it upon the substance of the object; Zhiyi holds that the image of water is image while the contemplation of the ground is actual, and so establishes it upon whether the contemplation is empty or actual. Both readings are recorded, and no reconciliation is imposed.
VI. Terms (first occurrences — all glosses drawn from the two mirrors)
| Term | The commentary’s gloss, verbatim | Anchor | Mirror |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roughly seen | 「五明凝心不絕即見淨土之相,此名想心中見,猶有覺想故。」—“The fifth clarifies that when the mind is gathered without a break one sees the appearance of the Pure Land; this is called seeing within the imaging mind, because thought and conception are still present.” | 〔T37n1753 0263c13〕 | Shandao |
—“As for ‘right reception,’ the imaging mind wholly rests and discursive concerns all vanish; correspondence with samādhi is called right reception.” | 〔T37n1753 0247c02〕 | Shandao |
—“As for ‘reflection,’ it is the expedient prior to contemplation: to think out the general and the particular characteristics of the twofold recompense, dependent and direct, of that land.” | 〔T37n1753 0247b28〕 | Shandao |
| The good done in concentration · the good done in a scattered mind | 「從日觀下至十三觀已來名為定善。 —“From the contemplation of the sun down to the thirteenth contemplation is called the good done in concentration. The three kinds of merit and the nine grades are called the good done in a scattered mind.” | 〔T37n1753 0247b23〕 | Shandao |
| The gradual image-contemplation · the actual contemplation | 「文有四:一漸想觀。 —“The text has four parts: first, the gradual image-contemplation. From ‘if one attains samādhi’ onward is the second, the actual contemplation.” | 〔T37n1750 0192a03〕 | Zhiyi |
| The palace-womb (womb-birth) | 「雖得往生含華未出、或生邊界,或墮宮胎。」—“Though such a one gains birth in that land, he is held within the flower and does not come out, or is born in the border region, or falls into a palace-womb.” | 〔T37n1753 0264a14〕 | Shandao |
The graph 「粗」 — the base text writes 「粗」 〔T12n0365 0342a23〕, and the Taishō collation notes record that the Ming witness writes a variant form (see the ninth topic). Shandao’s commentary likewise writes 「粗」 〔T37n1753 0247a02〕. Each belongs to its own witness, and each is recorded verbatim.
Of the transcribed names in this passage (samādhi, Ānanda, Vaidehī and the rest), the two commentaries here give neither rendered name nor Sanskrit form, and this edition does not supply one in their stead.
VII. Similes and Rhetoric
Similes the sūtra uses of itself: this passage has none. The whole passage teaches directly and judges directly, without a single simile. Recorded honestly.
Similes set up by the mirror commentaries (not present in the sūtra, recorded here for reference and not to be confounded with the sūtra’s own similes):
| Simile | The commentary verbatim | Anchor | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| A flash of lightning | 「人天之樂猶如電光,須臾即捨,還入三惡長時受苦」—“The pleasure of gods and men is like a flash of lightning: in a moment it is cast off, and one enters again the three evil destinies to undergo suffering for a long time.” | 〔T37n1753 0263c27〕 | That the pleasure of gods and men cannot be relied upon |
Two things may be recorded as rhetoric. First, the passage sets two degrees of 「見」 (seeing) over against each other — 「粗見」 (roughly seen) and 「了了分明」 (clear and distinct) — with 「若得三昧」 (if one attains samādhi) standing between them, so that within a single sentence the bound between settled and unsettled is drawn. Second, the whole passage changes its subject three times: first the Buddha addresses Ānanda and Vaidehī, next he addresses Ānanda alone, and last he judges wrong and right without naming anyone; from the method contemplated it turns into entrustment, and then turns back to the criterion — a sentence-pattern seen again and again in this sūtra from here onward.
VIII. Citation and Carrying Forward
- The sentence on the extinction of offences here, and the other such sentences in this sūtra — 「除八十億劫生死之罪」 (removing the offences of eighty koṭis of kalpas of birth-and-death) occurs three times in this sūtra, and this unit holds the first of them 〔T12n0365 0342a27〕. Kuiji’s Comprehensive Praise Commentary on the Amitābha Sūtra cites the sūtra’s text on the extinction of offences as 「又《觀經》云:於念念中滅除八十億劫生死之罪。」—“Again the Contemplation Sūtra says: in thought after thought he extinguishes the offences of eighty koṭis of kalpas of birth-and-death” 〔T37n1758 0343c25〕 — its words 「於念念中」 (in thought after thought) belong to the contemplation of birth in the lowest grade in this sūtra 〔T12n0365 0346a20〕, and not to the text of this unit. Distinguished verbatim, recorded without adjudication. The point of cross-reading within this axis: the apparatus layer of the Amitābha Sūtra volume.
- This passage is cited by Shandao himself in two places in the Section on the Profound Meaning 〔T37n1753 0247b29〕 〔T37n1753 0247c03〕, making it one of the passages of this sūtra most densely cited by his own commentary.
- The judgment of wrong and right in this contemplation carries on from the one before: 「邪正義者,前日觀中已說。」—“The meaning of wrong and right has already been stated in the contemplation of the sun above” 〔T37n1753 0264a20〕.
- Nothing in the remaining editions of this corpus cites this passage. The whole tree has been searched for 「粗見極樂國地」 (roughly seeing the ground of the land of Ultimate Bliss), 「除八十億劫生死之罪」 (removing the offences of eighty koṭis of kalpas of birth-and-death), and 「說是觀地法」 (teaching this method of contemplating the ground): apart from the source layer of this edition, the line-by-line mirror files, and the citation in the Comprehensive Praise Commentary in the Amitābha Sūtra volume on this same axis, no other edition yields a single hit. Recorded honestly.
IX. Placement Among the Recensions
The Taishō collation notes within the domain of this unit come to two in all (as now current):
| Anchor | Base text | Variant | Witnesses |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0342a22 | The twelve characters from 「佛告阿難及韋提希」 to 「水想成已」 | These twelve characters absent | Song · Yuan · Ming · current-circulation printing |
| 0342a23 | 「粗」 (rough) | A variant graph (given in the Taishō collation notes; its form is not in the common character set) | Ming |
The first item, together with the last sixteen characters of the previous unit, makes up the single item of twenty-eight characters in the Taishō’s original form — that is, the three witnesses and the current-circulation printing read here four characters, giving neither the sixteen characters of judgment that close the previous unit nor the twelve characters of address that open this one. The collation notes as now current divide this into two items, of sixteen characters and of twelve, and this edition records the boundary according to the current division. Not one character of the base text is altered on that account, and no judgment is made in their stead as to which is the original text.
The second item — the base text writes 「粗」, and the Ming witness a variant form. Here the base text’s 「粗」 is recorded, and the variant form is not carried into the text.
at the close of this unit carry no Taishō collation note — unlike the sixteen characters of the same form at the close of the previous unit and of the fourth and fifth units, which are recorded as absent from the three witnesses. Each place is recorded as it stands, and it is not summed up as 「皆作」 (all read thus) or 「皆無」 (all are absent).
Two matters bearing on these variants are recorded alongside them (recorded without adjudication):
① Shandao’s commentary, citing the first sentence of this passage verbatim in the Section on the Profound Meaning, cites what is the reading of the three witnesses — 「即地觀文中說言『如此想者名為粗見極樂國土』」—“that is, the text of the contemplation of the ground says, ‘one who forms an image in this way is said roughly to have seen the land of Ultimate Bliss’” 〔T37n1753 0247b29〕. The base text reads 「水想成已,名為粗見極樂國地」—“once the image of water is accomplished, this is called roughly seeing the ground of the land of Ultimate Bliss” 〔T12n0365 0342a22〕. Both 「如此想者」 as against 「水想成已」, and 「國土」 as against 「國地」, differ in the two places. His outline, moreover, takes 「此想成時」 (when this image is accomplished) as the beginning of this contemplation 〔T37n1753 0263c07〕, and does not begin it at 「佛告阿難及韋提希」 (the Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehī). Recorded verbatim: the sūtra is not altered by the commentary, nor the commentary by the sūtra.
② Both commentaries do set up a topic for showing the contemplation to be wrong or right at the close of this contemplation — Shandao: 「六、從作是觀已下,正明辨觀邪正」—“sixth, from ‘makes this contemplation’ onward directly clarifies the distinguishing of the contemplation as wrong or right” 〔T37n1753 0264a19〕; Zhiyi: 「「作是觀」下,顯觀邪正」—“from ‘makes this contemplation’ onward shows the contemplation to be wrong or right” 〔T37n1750 0192a04〕. This is set side by side with the fact that the sixteen characters at the close of this unit carry no collation note, recorded without adjudication, and no causal inference is drawn between them.
Gaiji: nothing found in the text of this unit (the Ming variant form given in the collation notes is not carried into the text).
Inline glosses (place="inline" notes): nothing found in this unit.
Ideographic space (U+3000): nothing found in this unit.
Newly added CBETA collation notes: nothing found in this unit.
