〔T12 0344b25〕
心要Essence

In the ninth contemplation the Buddha’s body was six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of yojanas, as many as the sands of the Gaṅgā. In the last contemplation of the good done in concentration, the Buddha says: first contemplate sixteen feet.

The Sūtra Admits First That It Cannot Be Caught

“As was said before, the body of the Buddha of Measureless Life is measureless in its extent, and it is not within reach of the power of an ordinary person’s mind.”

This is not somebody else’s remark. It is the sūtra turning back to gloss what came before: that object is too vast, this mind too small.

The Pivot Is One Word — Yet

“Yet by the power of that Tathāgata’s vow of former lives, whoever remembers and forms the image will necessarily succeed.”

That the object is vast and the mind small is the plain fact; this sentence says on which side accomplishment rests — not on the power of the mind, but on the power of the vow.

The object contemplated may shrink and the contemplating mind may be feeble; the side relied upon has never shrunk.

Small Ones Are True Too

“At times he appears with a great body filling the whole of space; at times he appears with a small body of sixteen feet or of eight.”

Great body and small body are the appearing of one and the same person. And the sūtra adds a verdict: “the forms in which he appears are all of the colour of true gold.”

Great and small may differ; the colour does not change.

Knowing Them by the One Thing on the Head

“The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta, in every place, have bodies the same as those of sentient beings.”

Then how are they to be recognized? “One need only contemplate the mark upon the head to know that this one is Avalokiteśvara and that one is Mahāsthāmaprāpta.”

There is no need to look at the whole body. That one thing on the head is enough.

The Thirteen Contemplations End Here

“This is called the contemplation of mixed images, and it is named the thirteenth contemplation.”

From the setting sun to the image sixteen feet high, the objects contemplated on the seat have all been spoken of. What comes next is what nine kinds of person meet with at the end of life.

義疏Exposition

In the ninth contemplation the sūtra taught the contemplation of the true body of the Buddha of Measureless Life: a body six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of yojanas, as many as the sands of the Gaṅgā, in height, the white tuft between the brows like five Mount Sumerus, the eyes like the water of the four great seas. That is the largest measure this sūtra ever sets out.

By the thirteenth contemplation, which is the last of the good done in concentration, the Buddha says instead: “They should first contemplate an image sixteen feet high upon the water of the pool.”

Sixteen feet. This is a plain subtraction the sūtra performs upon the object contemplated.

From the image of the ground onward this sūtra has been speaking of the object as larger and larger, more and more excellent, in order to lift a person’s mind. This contemplation goes the other way: it draws the thing contemplated all the way down to a height a person can see by raising his eyes.

Shandao’s Commentary on the Contemplation Sūtra in Four Fascicles opens this contemplation into eleven segments, marking the beginning and end of each sentence, and in the second segment already points out that this is a changing of the object and a turning of the mind. Zhiyi’s Commentary on the Sūtra on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life makes only two segments, and at the contemplation before had already posed the question: why should the universal contemplation and the mixed be made two? The two houses judge differently, and each keeps its reasons in its own book. What is set out below is the sūtra.

The Sūtra Itself Admits First That It Cannot Be Done

Before the subtraction, the sūtra says one plain thing.

“As was said before, the body of the Buddha of Measureless Life is measureless in its extent, and it is not within reach of the power of an ordinary person’s mind.”

That measure just given is not something the power of an ordinary person’s mind can reach. This sentence is not somebody else’s remark; it is the sūtra turning back in the next contemplation to gloss the one before.

Having come this far through the sixteen contemplations, the sūtra does not pretend that all twelve have been accomplished. It states the difficulty to its face: the object is too vast, this mind too small; it cannot be caught.

Then on What Ground Can It Still Be Accomplished

The sentence that follows is the pivot of this contemplation:

“Yet by the power of that Tathāgata’s vow of former lives, whoever remembers and forms the image will necessarily succeed.”

One word — yet — turns it about. That the object is vast and the mind small is the plain fact; but what accomplishment rests on is not the side of the mind’s power. It is the side of that Buddha’s vow of former lives. Whoever remembers and forms the image will necessarily succeed.

The readings handed down put this down very heavily: it is not that the small is therefore easy to accomplish, nor that the great therefore does not appear; it is simply that Amitābha’s vow is weighty, and so all who form the image succeed.

Read straight through, the first twelve contemplations of this sūtra look like an exercise that grows harder by degrees; at this sentence the whole axis of hard and easy shifts its place. The object contemplated may shrink and the contemplating mind may be feeble; the side that is relied upon has never shrunk at all.

Where One May Form the Image

The sūtra names only one place: “They should first contemplate an image sixteen feet high upon the water of the pool.”

And the readings handed down widen that sentence. The commentators of old list the places where the mind may be settled and the image formed: upon the flowers on the water of the pool, within the jeweled palaces and jeweled pavilions, beneath the jeweled groves and jeweled trees, within the jeweled terraces and jeweled halls, and inside the jeweled clouds and flower canopies of open space — “in places such as these, settling the mind on each in turn and forming the image of it, one forms in every case the image of a manifested Buddha,” and the reason is “that capacity and object may match each other and accomplishment may come easily.”

Capacity and object matching each other is the whole reasoning of this contemplation. If the object is too vast and the capacity too small, the two do not join; adjust the object to a place where they can join, and only then can it be accomplished.

If you have tried forming the image by the earlier contemplations, you will probably recognize the difficulty: a body six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of yojanas, as many as the sands of the Gaṅgā, in height cannot be brought to mind — not from unbelief, but because there is simply no measure of that size in the mind in which to set it. And sixteen feet is a height a person can see by raising his eyes.

The sūtra has not made the Buddha smaller. It has moved the entrance to where the hand can reach.

The Small One Is True as Well

Once the object has shrunk, a doubt comes with it: is that small image of sixteen feet still the Buddha?

The sūtra’s answer is not argument but description: “Amitābha Buddha, in the spiritual power that is as he wills, manifesting freely in the lands of the ten directions: at times he appears with a great body filling the whole of space; at times he appears with a small body of sixteen feet or of eight.”

The great body and the small body are both his appearing, and both fall under those four words, the spiritual power that is as he wills. Then a verdict is added: “The forms in which he appears are all of the colour of true gold.”

Great and small may differ; the colour does not change. The manifested Buddhas within the circular radiance, and the jeweled lotus flowers, are also the same as what was said before.

The commentators of old point out here that this one sentence about the colour of true gold is precisely where right and wrong are settled in this contemplation. If the image contemplated is not of the colour of true gold, then it is not an object this contemplation allows — however great or however small it may have appeared.

This way of judging runs along the same line as the first contemplation. The first contemplation judged right from wrong not by how high or low what was seen was, but only by whether what was imaged and what appeared were the same. This contemplation judges true from false not by the size of the body, but only by the colour. Neither criterion lies in quantity. Both lie in whether the two things fit.

And after speaking of the two bodies, great and small, the sūtra adds one more sentence pointing back: “the manifested Buddhas within the circular radiance, and the jeweled lotus flowers, are as was said above” — that shrunken image is no different in its light and marks from the true body described before. The measure of the body may follow the capacity; the light and its marks do not.

Two Senses of “as He Wills”

Before speaking of the two bodies, the sūtra gives a general reason: “Amitābha Buddha, in the spiritual power that is as he wills, manifesting freely in the lands of the ten directions.”

The readings handed down open those words, as he wills, into two.

One is according with the will of sentient beings: following what they think in their minds, he answers what they need and delivers them. As large as you can hold in your mind, so large does he appear.

The other is according with Amitābha’s own will: the five eyes illumine in full, the six supernormal powers are unhindered, and he observes which capacity may be delivered, so that in a single thought, with nothing before and nothing after, body and mind go to it together.

Taken together, the two say one and the same thing: the size of the body in which he appears is not a limit upon the Buddha; it is the measure of the capacity. And of these two, the first is set up for you, while the second is his own affair.

Recognizing Them by One Thing on the Head

This contemplation also has one very practical instruction.

“The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta, in every place, have bodies the same as those of sentient beings.”

The bodies these two show in every place are the same as those of sentient beings. Then how is one to recognize them?

“One need only contemplate the mark upon the head to know that this one is Avalokiteśvara and that one is Mahāsthāmaprāpta.”

One looks only at the head. The tenth contemplation said that within Avalokiteśvara’s heavenly crown there is a standing manifested Buddha; the eleventh said that upon Mahāsthāmaprāpta’s fleshy protuberance there is a jeweled vase. To recognize a person one need not look at the whole body; that one thing is enough.

And the sūtra goes on to say why they are here: “These two bodhisattvas assist Amitābha Buddha and universally convert and deliver all sentient beings.”

The Good Done in Concentration Closes Here

“This is called the contemplation of mixed images, and it is named the thirteenth contemplation.”

From the setting sun of the first contemplation to the image sixteen feet high of this one, the thirteen contemplations are walked through. What Vaidehī had asked for at the outset was teach me reflection, teach me right reception; these thirteen contemplations are the answer to those two sentences.

What the sūtra will speak of next is no longer the object contemplated on the seat, but what nine kinds of person meet with at the end of life.

Looking back over the sequence of these thirteen, one finds that it does not run upward all the way. The first six, from the sun, the water, the ground, the trees, and the pool to the pavilions, are the surface of that land; the seventh sets up the Flower Throne, the eighth the image, the ninth sees the Buddha’s true body, the tenth and eleventh the two great beings — that much runs upward. The twelfth puts the person inside, and the thirteenth draws the Buddha back to sixteen feet — and that runs downward and back.

A sūtra that teaches contemplation does not, where its contemplation section ends, climb to a summit; it turns around and sets the door lower.

And over that low door the same sentence is still written: the forms in which he appears are all of the colour of true gold. So this is not a Buddha at a discount; it is the same Buddha, appearing at a size that can be caught.

The good done in concentration, at its last step, does not arrive at a higher object; it walks back to a smaller image — and upon that smaller image the same sentence is written: the forms in which he appears are all of the colour of true gold.

Carrying Forward — Two Eyes on the Same Image Sixteen Feet High

The above is the meaning of this passage of the sūtra itself. Below, two eyes, one of the Sui and one of the Tang, cast their light from the side — the mirror is not the sūtra; only the same image sixteen feet high upon the water of the pool, looked at in two ways of reading.

The Shandao line is the reading of the Commentary in Four Fascicles. He opens this contemplation into eleven segments and marks the beginning and end of each sentence. He explains why the contemplation of a small image is taught: “this is the Tathāgata teaching sentient beings to change the object and turn the mind, and so enter contemplation”; and he lists the places where the image may be formed — upon the flowers on the water of the pool, in the jeweled palaces and pavilions, beneath the jeweled groves and trees, within the jeweled terraces and halls, and inside the jeweled clouds and flower canopies of open space — “in places such as these, settling the mind on each in turn and forming the image of it, one forms in every case the image of a manifested Buddha, so that capacity and object may match each other and accomplishment may come easily.” He explains what accomplishment rests upon: “it is simply that Amitābha’s vow is weighty, and so all who form the image succeed.” As for what distinguishes the two bodhisattvas, he reads the character as head, and so takes as the distinction the standing manifested Buddha upon Avalokiteśvara’s head and the jeweled vase upon Mahāsthāmaprāpta’s head. He also states the matching of principal and companions in one line: “when the Buddha is great the attendants too are great; when the Buddha is small the attendants too are small.” This contemplation once finished, he gathers the whole up: from the contemplation of the sun to the contemplation of the Flower Throne is the dependent recompense, from the contemplation of the image to the contemplation of mixed images is the direct recompense, and here the meaning of the one gate of the good done in concentration is complete.

The Zhiyi line is the reading of the Commentary on the Sūtra on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life. He divides very sparely, making only two segments, and what concerns him is the doubt in people’s minds: having heard before of the vast and measureless, and hearing now of contemplating the small, will they not doubt that this is the Buddha’s body, and so be irreverent toward the small image? His answer is that “whether what is contemplated be great or small, it is in every case the Buddha’s body; this sweeps away the doubts of the assembly and gives rise in people to a weighty regard”; what this contemplation does is precisely to sweep that doubt away. As for what distinguishes the two bodhisattvas, what he reads is the mark upon the hand, and so he speaks of their hands being soft, having eighty-four thousand lines, and receiving and drawing in sentient beings with these jeweled hands; and he also records alongside it the account of those who take it as the head, closing with the judgment “both alike are the text of the sūtra, and there is no harm in using either.”

One line reads it as the gate of practice lowering a step to meet the capacity; the other reads it as the gate of doctrine sweeping away doubt to give rise to reverence.

And the sūtra itself has said only this: the forms in which he appears are all of the colour of true gold.

考據Apparatus

0344c07(承前條之*)「作是觀者,名為正觀。

夾註place="inline"):本單元零命中。

Placement of the passage as a whole. This unit is the thirteenth of the sixteen contemplations and also the last contemplation of the gate of the good done in concentration — the three grades and the nine grades that follow it enter upon the good done in a scattered mind. The sūtra first teaches that 「至心生西方者」, those who would with an utmost mind be born there in the west, should first contemplate an image sixteen feet high upon the water of the pool; next it cites what was said before, that the body is measureless in its extent and beyond the reach of an ordinary person’s mind; next, by the power of that Buddha’s vow of former lives, it settles the matter with 「有憶想者必得成就」—“whoever remembers and forms the image will necessarily succeed”; next it shows the greater by comparison with 「但想佛像得無量福」—“merely to form the image of the Buddha already gains measureless merit”; next it clarifies that Amitābha’s two bodies, great and small, are alike true and that the light and its marks are no different; and last it distinguishes the two bodhisattvas by 「但觀首相」—“one need only contemplate the mark upon the head,” closing with the general conclusion and the judgment of right and wrong. The whole passage runs to two hundred and thirty-four characters. The weightiest matter of collation in this unit lies in 「但觀首相」, where the character 「首」, head, is read by the Dunhuang recension as 「手」, hand — and the two mirrors read exactly these two characters apart; see the ninth topic.

I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement

Shandao’s Commentary in Four Fascicles, in the Section on the Good of Concentration, judges this contemplation to be the thirteenth and divides it into eleven segments:

—“Thirteenth, within the contemplation of mixed images there is likewise first the raising, next the distinguishing, and last the conclusion — there are eleven in all” 〔T37n1753 0269c10〕.

The commentary’s eleven segmentsThe commentary’s marked span (verbatim)AnchorSegment in this edition’s Plain Reading
1 · The charge and command, concluding the exhortation and giving rise to what follows「一、從佛告阿難已下,正明告命結勸生後。」—“First, from ‘the Buddha told Ānanda’ onward directly clarifies the charge and command, concluding the exhortation and giving rise to what follows.”〔T37n1753 0269c11〕〔一〕
2 · Contemplating the image in order to represent the true「二、從先當觀於一丈六已下,正明觀像以表真、想水以表地。」—“Second, from ‘they should first contemplate an image sixteen feet high’ onward directly clarifies the contemplating of the image in order to represent the true, and the forming of the image of water in order to represent the ground.”〔T37n1753 0269c12〕〔二〕
3 · The object vast and the mind small「三、從如先所說下,至非心力所及已來,正明境大心小卒難成就。 —“Third, from ‘as was said before’ down to ‘not within reach of the power of the mind,’ directly clarifies that the object is vast and the mind small, so that success is hard to come by at once; and this moves the sage’s intent to sorrow, so that he exhorts the contemplation of the small.”〔T37n1753 0269c18〕〔三〕
4 · Amitābha’s vow is weighty「四、從然彼如來下,至必得成就已來,正明凡心狹小、聖量彌寬,注想無由,恐難成就。」—“Fourth, from ‘yet that Tathāgata’ down to ‘will necessarily succeed,’ directly clarifies that the ordinary mind is narrow and small while the sage’s measure is ever wider, so that there is no way to pour out the image upon it and success is feared to be hard.”〔T37n1753 0269c20〕〔四〕
5 · Comparison that shows the greater「五、從但想佛像下,至具足身相已來,正明比校顯勝。」—“Fifth, from ‘merely to form the image of the Buddha’ down to ‘the body complete in its marks,’ directly clarifies the comparison that shows the greater.”〔T37n1753 0269c24〕〔五〕
6 · Great and small alike are true「六、從阿彌陀下,至丈六八尺已來,正明能觀所觀佛像雖身有大小,明皆是真。 —“Sixth, from ‘Amitābha’ down to ‘sixteen feet or eight,’ directly clarifies that the buddha-image, contemplating and contemplated, though its body be great or small, is in every case clarified to be true — there are three in all.”〔T37n1753 0269c26〕〔六〕
7 · The light and its marks no different「七、從所現之形已下,正明身雖大小有殊,光相即與真無異。」—“Seventh, from ‘the forms in which he appears’ onward directly clarifies that though the body differs as great or small, the light and its marks are no different from the true.”〔T37n1753 0270a06〕〔七〕
8 · Pointing to the same as the earlier contemplation「八、從觀世音菩薩已下,正明指同前觀。 —“Eighth, from ‘the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara’ onward directly clarifies the pointing to the same as the earlier contemplation. When the Buddha is great the attendants too are great; when the Buddha is small the attendants too are small.”〔T37n1753 0270a07〕〔八〕
9 · Exhorting the contemplation of what distinguishes the two「九、從眾生但觀首相已下,正明勸觀二別。」—“Ninth, from ‘sentient beings need only contemplate the mark upon the head’ onward directly clarifies the exhorting of the contemplation of what distinguishes the two.”〔T37n1753 0270a09〕〔九〕
10 · The two sages following one another as shadow and echo「十從此二菩薩已下,正明彌陀、觀音、勢至等宿願緣重,誓同捨惡等至菩提,影響相隨遊方化益。」—“Tenth, from ‘these two bodhisattvas’ onward directly clarifies that the conditions of the vows of former lives of Amitābha, Avalokiteśvara, and Mahāsthāmaprāpta are weighty: they vowed alike to cast off evil and to arrive together at awakening, and they follow one another as shadow and echo, travelling abroad to convert and to benefit.”〔T37n1753 0270a11〕〔十〕
—“Eleventh, from ‘this is’ onward is the general conclusion. Although the eleven sentences above differ among themselves, the extensive explanation of the contemplation of mixed images is herewith finished.”〔T37n1753 0270a14〕〔十一〕

This contemplation is the last of the good done in concentration — immediately after this passage the commentary gathers up the whole gate of the good done in concentration:

—“From the contemplation of the sun above down to the contemplation of mixed images, the whole clarifies the World-Honored One’s answer to Vaidehī’s fourth request above, the two sentences ‘teach me reflection’ and ‘teach me right reception’” 〔T37n1753 0270a16〕. —“Again, within that earlier request: first, from the contemplation of the sun down to the contemplation of the Flower Throne, the whole clarifies the dependent recompense; second, from the contemplation of the image down to the contemplation of mixed images, the whole clarifies the direct recompense. Although the twofold recompense above, dependent and direct, differs within itself, the extensive clarification of the meaning of the one gate of the good done in concentration is herewith finished” 〔T37n1753 0270b03〕.

What follows is the fourth fascicle, the Section on the Good of a Scattered Mind within the main body of the Contemplation Sūtra, where the three kinds of merit and the nine grades stand.

The commentary’s eleven segments likewise set up no topic for showing the contemplation to be wrong or right — this stands beside the variant of the last sixteen characters recorded in the ninth topic, recorded without adjudication.

The witness column · Zhiyi’s outline of this passage (recorded without adjudication):

—“The thirteenth, the mixed contemplation. It has two parts: first, contemplating the image sixteen feet high; second, from ‘the body of the Buddha of Measureless Life is measureless in its extent’ onward, clarifying that Amitābha is manifesting freely” 〔T37n1750 0193a28〕.

II. Collation with the Alternate Translations — recorded without adjudication

There is no second Chinese translation of this sūtra. The titles of the sūtras in the twelfth volume of the Taishō canon, from T12n0360 through T12n0396, have now been examined: a sūtra titled The Sūtra on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life stops at this one recension, and there is no alternate translation against which to collate. Recorded honestly.

The name 「雜想觀」, the contemplation of mixed images, yields nothing at all outside this edition. Recorded honestly.

III. Scriptural and Treatise Grounding (the “eye”)

The place of this contemplation is at the end of the good done in concentration:

—“From the contemplation of the sun down to the thirteenth contemplation is called the good done in concentration. The three kinds of merit and the nine grades are called the good done in a scattered mind” 〔T37n1753 0247b23〕.

The sūtra cites the earlier contemplations as its own warrant — the sentence 「如先所說,無量壽佛身量無邊」, as was said before, the body of the Buddha of Measureless Life is measureless in its extent, points to the text of the ninth contemplation; the sentence 「圓光化佛及寶蓮花,如上所說」, the manifested Buddhas within the circular radiance and the jeweled lotus flowers are as was said above, points likewise to the ninth contemplation and what follows it. The sūtra takes the earlier contemplations as the ground of this one and borrows nothing from outside.

「宿願力」, the power of the vow of former lives, is the pivot of this contemplation — the sūtra settles the matter of 「有憶想者必得成就」 upon that Buddha’s vow of former lives, and Shandao builds his statement upon this:

—“It is not that the small is therefore hard to accomplish, nor that the great therefore does not appear. It is simply that Amitābha’s vow is weighty, and so all who form the image succeed” 〔T37n1753 0269c22〕.

This passage cites no other sūtra and no treatise — neither of the two mirrors cites the text of any other sūtra or treatise here. Recorded honestly.

IV. Essentials of the Commentary on This Passage (the Commentary in Four Fascicles, line by line)

Why the contemplation of a small image is taught — the commentary explains it as 「易境轉心」, changing the object and turning the mind:

—“This is the Tathāgata teaching sentient beings to change the object and turn the mind, and so enter contemplation” 〔T37n1753 0269c13〕. —“In places such as these, settling the mind on each in turn and forming the image of it, one forms in every case the image of a manifested Buddha — this being so that capacity and object may match each other and accomplishment may come easily” 〔T37n1753 0269c16〕.

What is meant by capacity and object matching: if the object is vast and the mind small it is hard to accomplish, and so the object is lowered to meet the capacity. In his third segment the commentary marks the reason: 「境大心小卒難成就。 —“The object is vast and the mind small, so that success is hard to come by at once; and this moves the sage’s intent to sorrow, so that he exhorts the contemplation of the small” 〔T37n1753 0269c19〕.

What accomplishment rests upon is not the power of the mind but the Buddha’s vow

—“It is not that the small is therefore hard to accomplish, nor that the great therefore does not appear. It is simply that Amitābha’s vow is weighty, and so all who form the image succeed” 〔T37n1753 0269c22〕.

The comparison that shows the greater

—“If merely forming the image already gains measureless merit, how much greater is the work of benefit gained by one who contemplates the true Buddha” 〔T37n1753 0269c25〕.

The two senses of 「神通如意」, spiritual power as one wills

—“As for ‘as one wills,’ there are two kinds. The first is according with the will of sentient beings: following what they think in their minds, he answers and delivers them all. The second is according with Amitābha’s own will: the five eyes illumine in full, and the six supernormal powers are unhindered” 〔T37n1753 0269c29〕.

The colour of true gold is what settles right from wrong

—“The third clarifies that though the body’s measure be great or small, it is in every case of the colour of true gold; and this is what settles what is wrong and what is right in it” 〔T37n1753 0270a05〕.

What distinguishes the two bodhisattvas lies in the mark upon the head

—“How are the two distinguished? Upon the head of Avalokiteśvara there is a standing manifested Buddha; upon the head of Mahāsthāmaprāpta there is a jeweled vase” 〔T37n1753 0270a10〕.

Both marks can be checked against the text of the sūtra: the standing manifested Buddha within Avalokiteśvara’s heavenly crown is seen at 〔T12n0365 0343c18〕, and the jeweled vase upon Mahāsthāmaprāpta’s fleshy protuberance at 〔T12n0365 0344a29〕.

V. Divergent Readings of the Commentators (in parallel columns — recorded without adjudication)

PointShandao, Commentary in Four Fascicles (Tang)AnchorZhiyi’s commentary (Sui, Tiantai)Anchor
The division of this contemplationEleven segments〔T37n1753 0269c10〕Two segments (contemplating the image sixteen feet high · Amitābha manifesting freely)〔T37n1750 0193a28〕
Why the contemplation of a small image is taught「此是如來教諸眾生易境轉心入觀。」—“This is the Tathāgata teaching sentient beings to change the object and turn the mind, and so enter contemplation.”〔T37n1753 0269c13〕「所觀若大若小皆是佛身,拂去眾疑生人重意。 —“Whether what is contemplated be great or small, it is in every case the Buddha’s body; this sweeps away the doubts of the assembly and gives rise in people to a weighty regard. How does the assembly doubt? Having heard before of the vast and measureless, and hearing now of contemplating the small, they doubt that it is the Buddha’s body and are not reverent toward the small; hence the doubt must be swept away by clarifying that both are the Buddha, and their weighty regard given rise to.”〔T37n1750 0193b01〕
What accomplishment rests upon「直是彌陀願重,致使想者皆成。」—“It is simply that Amitābha’s vow is weighty, and so all who form the image succeed.”〔T37n1753 0269c23〕Nothing in this passage
By what mark the two bodhisattvas are distinguished「觀音頭首上有一立化佛,勢至頭首之上有一寶瓶。」—“Upon the head of Avalokiteśvara there is a standing manifested Buddha; upon the head of Mahāsthāmaprāpta there is a jeweled vase.” —“As for ‘one need only contemplate the mark upon the hand’: there are those who take it as the head.” (reading 「手」, hand, while preserving the reading 「首」, head)〔T37n1750 0193b04〕
The boundary between the universal and the mixed contemplationsHe does not pose this question「雜觀明佛菩薩神力自在,轉變非恒、大小不定,或隨物現,故名為雜。」—“The mixed contemplation clarifies that the spiritual power of the Buddha and the bodhisattvas is unhindered, that their transformations are not constant and their size is not fixed, and that they appear according to what is before them; hence it is named mixed.”〔T37n1750 0193a23〕

The fourth point is the plainest divergence of the two mirrors in this unit: what Shandao had before him read 「首」, head, and so he explains by the manifested Buddha within the heavenly crown and the jeweled vase upon the fleshy protuberance; what Zhiyi had before him read 「手」, hand, and his explanation of those who take it as the hand runs —

—“Above it was said that his hands are soft and have eighty-four thousand lines, and that with these jeweled hands he receives and draws in sentient beings. Both alike are the text of the sūtra, and there is no harm in using either” 〔T37n1750 0193b06〕.

Zhiyi takes the reading as the hand and yet plainly records the account of those who read it as 「頭首解」, taking it as the head, closing with 「皆是經文,用無在也。」—“both alike are the text of the sūtra, and there is no harm in using either” 〔T37n1750 0193b08〕 — his meaning being that what both accounts rest upon is the text of this sūtra, and either may be used without fault. This is Zhiyi’s own judgment; this edition records it and does not extend it in his stead, nor use it to reconcile the two mirrors. It stands beside the variant 『首/手』 recorded in the ninth topic, recorded without adjudication.

VI. Terms (first occurrences — all glosses drawn from the two mirrors)

TermThe commentary’s gloss, verbatimAnchorMirror
Mixed (the mixed of the contemplation of mixed images)「雜觀明佛菩薩神力自在,轉變非恒、大小不定,或隨物現,故名為雜。 —“The mixed contemplation clarifies that the spiritual power of the Buddha and the bodhisattvas is unhindered, that their transformations are not constant and their size is not fixed, and that they appear according to what is before them; hence it is named mixed. By this the distinction is made.”〔T37n1750 0193a23〕Zhiyi
Changing the object and turning the mind「此是如來教諸眾生易境轉心入觀。」—“This is the Tathāgata teaching sentient beings to change the object and turn the mind, and so enter contemplation.”〔T37n1753 0269c13〕Shandao
Capacity and object matching each other「如是等處一一住心想之,皆作化佛想,為令機境相稱易得成故也。」—“In places such as these, settling the mind on each in turn and forming the image of it, one forms in every case the image of a manifested Buddha — this being so that capacity and object may match each other and accomplishment may come easily.”〔T37n1753 0269c16〕Shandao
—“As for ‘as one wills,’ there are two kinds. The first is according with the will of sentient beings: following what they think in their minds, he answers and delivers them all. The second is according with Amitābha’s own will: the five eyes illumine in full, and the six supernormal powers are unhindered.”〔T37n1753 0269c29〕Shandao
The mark upon the head (what distinguishes the two sages)「云何二別? —“How are the two distinguished? Upon the head of Avalokiteśvara there is a standing manifested Buddha; upon the head of Mahāsthāmaprāpta there is a jeweled vase.”〔T37n1753 0270a10〕Shandao

「一丈六像」, an image sixteen feet high, and 「丈六八尺」, sixteen feet or eight — measures the sūtra sets out of itself; both mirrors cite them without separately explaining the standard of measure. Recorded honestly.

「圓光化佛」, the manifested Buddhas within the circular radiance, and 「寶蓮花」, the jeweled lotus flowers — the sūtra says of these 「如上所說」, as was said above, and that account stands at the ninth contemplation and after; it is not set out again here.

This passage of the sūtra contains no Sanskrit transcription, and the two commentaries give no Sanskrit form here; this edition does not supply one in their stead.

VII. Similes and Rhetoric

Similes the sūtra uses of itself: there are none in this passage. Here the sūtra puts comparison in the place of simile — 「但想佛像得無量福,況復觀佛具足身相」—“merely to form the image of the Buddha gains measureless merit; how much more to contemplate the Buddha’s body complete in its marks” — which is the sentence pattern that infers the greater from the lesser, not a simile set up. Recorded honestly.

Two expressions of the mirror commentaries may be recorded:

ExpressionThe commentary verbatimAnchorWhat it shows
When the Buddha is great the attendants too are great「正明指同前觀。 —“Directly clarifies the pointing to the same as the earlier contemplation. When the Buddha is great the attendants too are great; when the Buddha is small the attendants too are small.”〔T37n1753 0270a08〕Principal and companions matching each other
Following one another as shadow and echo「誓同捨惡等至菩提,影響相隨遊方化益。」—“They vowed alike to cast off evil and to arrive together at awakening, and they follow one another as shadow and echo, travelling abroad to convert and to benefit.”〔T37n1753 0270a13〕The relation of the two sages to Amitābha

Two things may be recorded as rhetoric. First, this passage twice points back to what precedes it with a phrase of the form as was … said: 「如先所說」 cites the measure of the body given in the ninth contemplation, and 「如上所說」 cites the manifested Buddhas within the circular radiance and the jeweled lotus flowers; the effect of the two is to fasten this contemplation to those before it rather than start a fresh hearth. Second, the setting of great against small runs through the whole passage: measureless extent against sixteen feet, a great body filling the whole of space against a small body of sixteen feet or eight — and the single sentence 「所現之形皆真金色」, the forms in which he appears are all of the colour of true gold, returns them to non-duality.

VIII. Citation and Carrying Forward

  • Nothing outside this edition cites the scriptural text of this unit; there is not a single hit (the expressions 「雜想觀」, 「一丈六像」, and 「但觀首相」 have been searched: apart from the source layer of this edition and the line-by-line mirror files, no other edition yields one). Recorded honestly.
  • How this contemplation carries forward within the sūtra itself: it points back to the measureless extent of the body in the ninth contemplation, to the manifested Buddha in the heavenly crown in the tenth, and to the jeweled vase upon the fleshy protuberance in the eleventh — all three passages of the sūtra falling within the domain of the earlier units of this edition. The sūtra itself uses this contemplation to close the contemplations of the direct recompense.
  • This contemplation is the border between the good done in concentration and the good done in a scattered mind — immediately after it Shandao gathers up the whole gate of the good done in concentration 〔T37n1753 0270b03〕, and what follows, the three grades and the nine grades, belongs to the good done in a scattered mind, which is the domain of the fourteenth through the sixteenth units of this edition.

IX. Placement Among the Recensions

The Taishō collation notes within the domain of this unit come to six in all, with one further item carried on by the asterisk of the note before it:

0344b29「相」 (marks)Song

The third item is the weightiest variant in this unit — the base text reads 「但觀首相」, one need only contemplate the mark upon the head, while the Dunhuang recension reads 「但觀手相」, one need only contemplate the mark upon the hand. The two mirrors read exactly these two characters apart: Shandao marks the opening of his ninth segment as 「九、從眾生但觀首相已下」—“ninth, from ‘sentient beings need only contemplate the mark upon the head’ onward” 〔T37n1753 0270a09〕, and explains it by the standing manifested Buddha upon Avalokiteśvara’s head and the jeweled vase upon Mahāsthāmaprāpta’s head 〔T37n1753 0270a10〕; Zhiyi, for his part, writes 「但觀手相者,有作頭首解者。」—“as for ‘one need only contemplate the mark upon the hand’: there are those who take it as the head” 〔T37n1750 0193b04〕, closing with 「皆是經文,用無在也。」—“both alike are the text of the sūtra, and there is no harm in using either” 〔T37n1750 0193b08〕. The recensions the two commentaries had before them differ, and their explanations differ accordingly. Both are recorded without adjudication: the base text is not altered to suit the reading of either commentary, nor is either commentary judged mistaken on the strength of the base text.

The variant of the last sixteen characters is carried on by the asterisk of the note before it and is not set out as a separate item — the Taishō collation note adds an asterisk under the item for the last sixteen characters of the twelfth contemplation, and the same text at the end of this unit falls under it (Song, Yuan, Ming, Dunhuang). This belongs to the same family as the last sixteen characters of the first contemplation 〔T12n0365 0342a04〕. Not one character of the base text is altered on that account.

Besides the two mirrors and the base text, one further matter is recorded honestly: in this contemplation Zhiyi explains an expression thus — 「「堅固行」者,常令習觀修行不倦。」—“As for ‘the firm practice,’ it is to make one practise contemplation constantly and cultivate it without weariness” 〔T37n1750 0193a29〕. The whole of this sūtra has now been searched, and the two characters 「堅固」, firm, yield nothing at all; nor do those three characters occur in this passage. The recension he had before him may have differed, or what he was citing may point elsewhere; there is nothing in the canon by which to settle it. Recorded without adjudication: nothing is supplied to the sūtra in his stead, and nothing is struck from the commentary.
