The contemplation before looked at an image. This one looks at a body.
Numbers the Mind Cannot Hold
“The Buddha’s body is as many yojanas in height as six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of the sands of the Gaṅgā.”
“The white tuft between his brows curls to the right, winding smoothly, like five Mount Sumerus.”
“The Buddha’s eyes are pure as the water of the four great seas, clear white and distinct.”
The numbers pile upward: eighty-four thousand marks; within each mark, eighty-four thousand excellences; within each excellence, eighty-four thousand rays of light.
The Light Shines Everywhere; What It Gathers In Is Those Who Recollect the Buddha
“Each single ray shines everywhere upon the worlds of the ten directions, gathering in the sentient beings who recollect the Buddha and not forsaking them.”
The light is not partial.
What is partial is whether the hand at the other end is put out.
Looking at the Body, He Sees the Mind
“To make this contemplation is called contemplating the body of every buddha; and because one contemplates the Buddha’s body one also sees the Buddha’s mind.”
And what the Buddha’s mind is, the sūtra says itself, leaving nothing in suspense:
“The mind of the buddhas is great kindness and compassion; with a kindness that is without object he embraces all sentient beings.”
Only One Mark Is Taken
Where there is no telling it all, the sūtra says: they “cannot be told in full.”
And then it gives an entrance: “One who contemplates the Buddha of Measureless Life enters by a single mark or excellence: he contemplates the white tuft between the brows alone, and makes it utterly clear.”
Marks and excellences in koṭis upon koṭis of tiers, and what is handed to you is one point between the brows.
“One who sees the mark of the white tuft between the brows will of himself come to see the eighty-four thousand marks and excellences.”

Translated in the Liu Song by Kālayaśas, The Sūtra Spoken by the Buddha on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life, T12n0365, the ninth of the sixteen contemplations, from “The Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehī” down to “to make another contemplation is called wrong contemplation.” The figures at the head of each segment give the Taishō page, register, and line.
〔一 · The Charge, Concluding the Contemplation of the Image〕(0343b15)The Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehī: “Once this image is accomplished, next you should further contemplate the bodily form and the light of the Buddha of Measureless Life.
〔二 · The True Buddha’s Bodily Form Surpassing the Gold of the Heavens〕(0343b16)Ānanda, you should know: the body of the Buddha of Measureless Life is of the colour of the Jambūnada gold of a hundred thousand myriads of koṭis of Yāma heavens.
〔三 · The Measure of the Body〕(0343b17)The Buddha’s body is as many yojanas in height as six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of the sands of the Gaṅgā.
〔四 · The General Contemplation of the Bodily Form〕(0343b18)The white tuft between his brows curls to the right, winding smoothly, like five Mount Sumerus. The Buddha’s eyes are pure as the water of the four great seas, clear white and distinct. Every pore of his body sends forth light, like Mount Sumeru. That Buddha’s circular radiance is like a hundred koṭis of the three-thousandfold great-thousand world-system; and within the circular radiance there are manifested Buddhas as many as a million koṭis of nayutas of the sands of the Gaṅgā; and each single manifested Buddha has manifested bodhisattvas, many and numberless, for his attendants.
〔五 · The Particular Marks, Whose Light Benefits Those with the Affinity〕(0343b23)The Buddha of Measureless Life has eighty-four thousand marks; within each single mark there are eighty-four thousand secondary excellences conforming to the form; within each single excellence there are again eighty-four thousand rays of light; and each single ray shines everywhere upon the worlds of the ten directions, gathering in the sentient beings who recollect the Buddha and not forsaking them.
〔六 · Concluding with the Few to Show the Many〕(0343b26)Those rays, those marks and excellences, and the manifested Buddhas cannot be told in full.
〔七 · Only Let the Image Be Held in Mind〕(0343b27)One should only hold the image in mind, so that the mind sees it clear and distinct.
〔八 · The Work Presented and Not Lost; the Benefit of the Contemplation Achieved〕(0343b28)One who sees this matter sees at that very moment all the buddhas of the ten directions; and because he sees the buddhas it is called the samādhi of recollecting the Buddha. To make this contemplation is called contemplating the body of every buddha; and because one contemplates the Buddha’s body one also sees the Buddha’s mind. The mind of the buddhas is great kindness and compassion; with a kindness that is without object (the third of the three kinds of kindness: the mind is not raised to contemplate the principle, and yet it abides of itself in the level and equal first meaning) he embraces all sentient beings.
〔九 · Casting Off the Body, Born in the World to Come〕(0343c02)To make this contemplation is, when this body has been cast off and the world to come is reached, to be born before the buddhas and to attain the patience of non-arising.
〔十 · The Concluding Exhortation to Cultivate the Contemplation, and Its Benefit〕(0343c04)Therefore one who is wise should bind the mind and contemplate closely the Buddha of Measureless Life. One who contemplates the Buddha of Measureless Life enters by a single mark or excellence: he contemplates the white tuft between the brows alone, and makes it utterly clear. One who sees the mark of the white tuft between the brows will of himself come to see the eighty-four thousand marks and excellences. One who sees the Buddha of Measureless Life sees at that very moment the measureless buddhas of the ten directions; and because he attains the sight of the measureless buddhas, the buddhas, present before him, give him the prediction.
〔十一 · General Conclusion〕(0343c08)This is called the image of contemplating all forms everywhere, and it is named the ninth contemplation.
〔十二 · Distinguishing Whether the Contemplation Is Wrong or Right〕(0343c09)To make this contemplation is called right contemplation; to make another contemplation is called wrong contemplation.”
What the eighth contemplation looked at was an image — whether the eyes were closed or open, a jeweled image, seated upon the Flower Throne. That was provisionally set up.
At the ninth, the sūtra says: “Once this image is accomplished, next you should further contemplate the bodily form and the light of the Buddha of Measureless Life.”
From the image to the body. Shandao’s Commentary on the Contemplation Sūtra in Four Fascicles calls this contemplation “the contemplation of the true body,” and brings out beneath it the meaning of the three conditions of recollecting the Buddha; Zhiyi’s Commentary on the Sūtra on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life calls it “the contemplation of the Buddha’s true dharma-body,” and beneath it glosses the Buddha’s mind by the three kinds of kindness of the Explanatory Treatise. The two houses set up different things, and each keeps his reasons in his own book. What is set out below is the sūtra.
A Number Too Large to Read Through
The sūtra opens with measure:
The Buddha’s body is as many yojanas in height as six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of the sands of the Gaṅgā. The white tuft between his brows curls to the right, winding smoothly, like five Mount Sumerus. His eyes are pure as the water of the four great seas, clear white and distinct. The light that every pore of his body sends forth is like a Mount Sumeru. That Buddha’s circular radiance is like a hundred koṭis of the three-thousandfold great-thousand world-system.
These numbers are too large for a reader’s mind to catch.
One line of reading stops here from of old and works the sum out in earnest: a man of the world is seven feet tall and his eye something over an inch; one of the four great seas is eighty-four thousand yojanas, and the four together three hundred and thirty-six thousand yojanas — reckoning by the proportion of eye to body, the body could be at most ten thousand times the eye. How then should it run to six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of the sands of the Gaṅgā of yojanas? And so he judges: the three characters of “the sands of the Gaṅgā” are an error of the translator.
The other line of reading says not a word here, and marks four characters only: the measure of the body.
Both readings stand, and both are the words of their own books. What the sūtra writes is six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of the sands of the Gaṅgā of yojanas — and there it stands written.
Why Does the Light Gather In Only Those Who Recollect the Buddha?
The numbers pile upward: eighty-four thousand marks; within each mark, eighty-four thousand excellences; within each excellence, eighty-four thousand rays of light.
And then the sūtra says something short: “Each single ray shines everywhere upon the worlds of the ten directions, gathering in the sentient beings who recollect the Buddha and not forsaking them.”
The light shines everywhere; what it gathers in is those who recollect the Buddha.
The readings handed down set a question here, and set it bluntly: those who fully cultivate the many practices, if only they dedicate and direct the merit, all attain birth in that land — why then does the Buddha’s light, which shines everywhere, gather in those who recollect the Buddha alone?
The answer is three layers of condition.
First, the intimate condition. The mouths of sentient beings constantly utter the Buddha’s name, and the Buddha hears; their bodies constantly pay homage to the Buddha, and the Buddha sees; their minds constantly recollect the Buddha, and the Buddha knows. Sentient beings hold the Buddha in mind, and the Buddha holds sentient beings in mind — the three acts of body, speech, and mind on either side do not part from each other, and so it is called intimate.
Second, the proximate condition. Sentient beings wish to see the Buddha, and the Buddha, answering that thought, is present before their eyes; and so it is called proximate.
Third, the dominant condition. Sentient beings utter and recollect, and the offences of many kalpas are removed; when life is about to end, the Buddha with the host of sages comes of himself to welcome them, and no bond of wrong karma can bar the way; and so it is called dominant.
All three names are plain ones: intimate, proximate, dominant. They state three faces of one and the same thing — it is not that the Buddha plays favourites; it is that those three acts have really made contact.
Where the mouth does not utter, the body does not pay homage, and the mind does not recollect, the light shines everywhere all the same; only there is no hand at the other end to take it.
“Because He Contemplates the Buddha’s Body He Also Sees the Buddha’s Mind”
The weightiest sentence of the passage stands in the middle: “To make this contemplation is called contemplating the body of every buddha; and because one contemplates the Buddha’s body one also sees the Buddha’s mind.”
What is contemplated is a body; what is seen is a mind.
How can that be?
One line explains it very briefly: because he sees the Buddha’s body he sees the Buddha’s mind — the body arises from the mind, so that to see the body is to see the mind; and because the body has been seen, the mind’s imaging turns clearer, and only then does he come to see the Buddha’s mind.
The other sets it inside the five stages of the contemplation’s accomplishment: by contemplating he comes to see the buddhas of the ten directions; because he sees the buddhas the samādhi of recollecting the Buddha is brought to completion; to contemplate one buddha alone is to contemplate the body of every buddha; by seeing the Buddha’s body he sees the Buddha’s mind; and the Buddha’s mind has kindness and compassion for its substance, embracing all things everywhere with this level and equal great kindness.
Neither line makes “seeing the mind” into anything mysterious. The body is what the mind has made; therefore wherever the body appears, there the mind is.
What the Buddha’s Mind Is
And the sūtra itself supplies the answer next, leaving nothing in suspense: “The mind of the buddhas is great kindness and compassion; with a kindness that is without object he embraces all sentient beings.”
The Buddha’s mind is nothing else: it is great kindness and compassion.
As for the kindness that is without object, one line cites a treatise dividing kindness into three:
One has sentient beings as its object — without raising the mind to lay hold of any sentient being, benefit appears of itself upon sentient beings. As the scripture says: I in truth do not go; it is the power of the wholesome root of kindness that lets sentient beings see such things.
One has dharmas as its object — without raising the mind to contemplate dharmas, it shines of itself upon all dharmas, as the sun shines upon things and makes no distinctions.
The third is without object — the mind is not raised to contemplate the principle, and yet it abides of itself in the level and equal first meaning, and with such kindness it embraces all sentient beings.
The three kinds of kindness are, each above the last, less moved. By the third, even the thought I am being kind is not set up, and the benefit appears all the same.
There is a simile too, and it comes from the same treatise: like the spawn a fish lays — if the mother does not hold them in mind, the young rot away; so it is with sentient beings, and if the Buddha does not hold them in mind, their wholesome roots decay.
Earlier it was said that he gathers them in and does not forsake them, which is the meeting of the three acts; here it is said that where he does not hold them in mind the wholesome roots decay, which is that where there is no meeting there is nothing. Two faces of one thing, of which sūtra and treatise have each stated one.
Reading this sentence, we easily put the weight on the word kindness; the sūtra puts it on the words without object — that benefit should appear where no mind is raised at all is the hard thing it means to say.
And After It Has Been Seen?
After the contemplation is accomplished, the sūtra gives two layers of fruit.
The first is here and now: “One who sees this matter sees at that very moment all the buddhas of the ten directions” — see this one, and one sees all the buddhas of the ten directions; and because the buddhas are seen, this is called the samādhi of recollecting the Buddha. The readings handed down divide this stretch into five layers, one of which is: to contemplate one buddha alone is to contemplate the body of every buddha.
The second lies in the life to come: “To make this contemplation is, when this body has been cast off and the world to come is reached, to be born before the buddhas and to attain the patience of non-arising.”
The four characters “casting off the body, in the world to come” are said very plainly — cast off this body, go on to the life to come. And what is promised is not a place but a standing: to be born in the presence of the buddhas.
One line puts the matter in quite household terms: because he cultivates the samādhi of recollecting the Buddha the seeing of the Buddha is aroused, and he vows to meet him constantly, birth after birth — like a man who practises a craft, and who, working at it from youth to full age, comes to make fine things of himself.
We probably understand this too. Do a thing long enough and it stops being a thing you have to resolve upon.
And the last sentence of the whole contemplation pushes the fruit one stage further: “Because he attains the sight of the measureless buddhas, the buddhas, present before him, give him the prediction.” Having seen, he is also recognized — the buddhas are there before him and give him the prediction. The readings handed down put it more precisely still: once the buddhas are seen, the prediction is received within concentration.
Entering by a Single White Tuft
At this point the sūtra suddenly folds up the whole spread of adornment.
Before, it said “those rays, those marks and excellences, and the manifested Buddhas cannot be told in full” — there is no ending them. And what follows is: “One should only hold the image in mind, so that the mind sees it clear and distinct.”
And after that comes the most practical sentence of all: “One who contemplates the Buddha of Measureless Life enters by a single mark or excellence: he contemplates the white tuft between the brows alone, and makes it utterly clear.”
Of eighty-four thousand marks, one is taken; and of that one, the single white tuft between the brows — look at that until it is clear.
Why? Because the marks and excellences are too many to be contemplated all mixed together; and once the one mark of the white tuft is seen, all the many marks appear of themselves.
This is the most usable sentence in the sūtra. All those koṭis upon koṭis of tiers of number are handed over at last as one entrance, and that entrance is no bigger than a point between the brows.
And the fruit the sūtra promises follows just as fast: see the mark of the white tuft between the brows, and the eighty-four thousand marks and excellences will of themselves come to be seen; see the Buddha of Measureless Life, and one sees the measureless buddhas of the ten directions; attain the sight of the measureless buddhas, and the buddhas give the prediction there before one.
A single white tuft, and it opens on the ten directions.
Carrying Forward — Two Eyes on the Same White Tuft
The above is the meaning of this passage of the sūtra itself. Below, two eyes, one of the Sui and one of the Tang, cast their light from the side — the mirror is not the sūtra; only the same white tuft, seen through two ways of reading.
The Shandao line is the reading of the Commentary on the Contemplation Sūtra in Four Fascicles. He calls this contemplation “the contemplation of the true body” and divides it into twelve sentences. He sets it in the frame of the true and the provisional within the dependent and the direct recompense: the eighth, of the image, is “the provisional direct recompense,” and this one is “the true direct recompense” — by that provisional direct recompense scattered images are gradually stilled and the eye of the mind opens; the twofold pure recompense of that quarter is roughly seen, dullness and delusion are removed, and only then are the real objects seen. The meaning of the three conditions of recollecting the Buddha comes from him, and the three names, intimate, proximate, dominant, come from him; and the three sūtras he cites as warrant are all of this one axis — that in the forty-eight vows of the larger sūtra it is clarified only that by singly recollecting the Name one attains birth, that in The Amitābha Sūtra one attains birth by singly recollecting the Name for one day or seven, and that in the texts of concentration and of a scattered mind in this sūtra it is marked only that by singly recollecting the Name one attains birth. Upon the number of the body’s measure he sets down no doubt at all. The whole contemplation he closes in two sentences: “Such is the true form: its measure far-reaching, its tuft like five mountains; its resounding answers to the capacity, and its light touches all that has consciousness; it is to make all that bears spirit entrust its life and pour out its imaging without remainder, and, riding the Buddha’s original vastness, come alike to that land.”
The Zhiyi line is the reading of the Commentary on the Sūtra on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life. He calls this contemplation “the contemplation of the Buddha’s true dharma-body” and divides it into five topics, setting up among them a topic of his own, “directly clarifying the contemplating of the Buddha’s mind.” At the measure of the body he reckons by the proportion of a man’s eyes to his body and judges the three characters of “the sands of the Gaṅgā” to be an error of the translator; at the Buddha’s mind he cites the three kinds of kindness of the Explanatory Treatise — with sentient beings as object, with dharmas as object, and without object — together with the simile of the fish’s spawn; at birth in that land he cites the Pratyutpanna Sūtra; and at the measure of the white tuft he cites the Sūtra on the Samādhi of Contemplating the Buddha and the Treatise on the Jewel-Nature, saying that one may first take the size of Śākyamuni’s tuft-mark and contemplate it as present, and that only when the samādhi and the contemplating mind are accomplished is it well to contemplate in a measure answering to that Buddha’s marks.
One line reads this body as the true recompense brought about by the original vow, and measures it by how the three acts make contact with the Buddha; the other reads it as the appearing of the dharma-body, and measures it by numbers, by the kinds of kindness, and by the order of the method of contemplation.
And the sūtra itself has said only one sentence: because he contemplates the Buddha’s body he also sees the Buddha’s mind.
考據Apparatus

Placement of the passage as a whole. This unit is the ninth of the sixteen contemplations; Shandao’s Commentary in Four Fascicles calls it 「真身觀」, the contemplation of the true body, and it is that toward which the provisional support and the provisional direct recompense of the eight contemplations before it tend. The sūtra first concludes the contemplation of the image before it and raises the contemplation of the true body; next it speaks of the colour of the body, the measure of the body, the white tuft, the Buddha’s eyes, the pores, the circular radiance, and the manifested Buddhas and manifested bodhisattvas; next of the eighty-four thousand marks and excellences and of the light that gathers in the sentient beings who recollect the Buddha; next it concludes with the few to show the many and exhorts the holding of the image in mind; next it sets up the sentence 「以觀佛身故亦見佛心」—“because he contemplates the Buddha’s body he also sees the Buddha’s mind,” which together with 「是心作佛,是心是佛」—“this mind makes the Buddha; this mind is the Buddha” in the eighth contemplation is the pivot of the doctrine of the whole sūtra; and last it exhorts entry by a single mark or excellence, the contemplation of the white tuft between the brows alone, settles the name of the contemplation, and judges wrong from right. The whole passage runs to four hundred and fifty-seven characters. The two lines of the Imperially Composed Praise of the Buddha of Measureless Life at the head of the fascicle, 「沙有八萬四千相,一一相中復如是」—“each grain of sand has eighty-four thousand marks, and within each single mark it is so again” and 「以觀佛身見佛心」—“by contemplating the Buddha’s body one sees the Buddha’s mind,” are gathered up out of the text of this very unit; see the eighth topic.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
Shandao’s Commentary in Four Fascicles divides this contemplation into twelve sentences:
—“Ninth, within the contemplation of the true body there is likewise first the raising, next the distinguishing, and last the conclusion — there are twelve in all” 〔T37n1753 0267c20〕.
| The commentary’s twelve sentences | The commentary’s marked span (verbatim) | Anchor | Segment in this edition’s Plain Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
—“First, from ‘the Buddha told Ānanda’ down to ‘the bodily form and the light,’ directly clarifies the charge that concludes the contemplation of the image before and gives rise to the contemplation of the true body that follows.”
—“Second, from ‘Ānanda, you should know’ down to ‘the colour of gold,’ directly clarifies that the bodily form of the true Buddha surpasses the colour of the gold of the heavens.”
—“Third, from ‘the Buddha’s body is sixty’ down to ‘yojanas,’ directly clarifies the measure of the body.”
—“Fourth, from ‘between the brows’ down to ‘bodhisattvas for his attendants,’ directly clarifies the general contemplation of the bodily form.”
—“Fifth, from ‘the Buddha of Measureless Life’ down to ‘gathers them in and does not forsake them,’ directly clarifies the contemplation of the particular marks of the body, whose light benefits those who have the affinity.”
—“Sixth, from ‘those rays, those marks and excellences’ onward concludes with the few to show the many: one who would contemplate them offhand can hardly be thorough.”
—“Seventh, from ‘one should only hold the image in mind’ onward directly clarifies that the adornment is subtle and wondrous, beyond the sphere of ordinary beings.”
—“Eighth, from ‘one who sees this matter’ down to ‘embraces all sentient beings,’ directly clarifies that the work is presented and not lost and that the benefit of the contemplation is achieved.”
—“Ninth, from ‘one who makes this contemplation’ down to ‘attains the patience of non-arising,’ directly clarifies the benefit of casting off the body and being born there in the world to come.”
—“Tenth, from ‘therefore one who is wise’ down to ‘gives him the prediction, present before him,’ again clarifies the concluding exhortation to cultivate the contemplation and its benefit.”
—“Eleventh, from ‘this is the image of contemplating everywhere’ onward is the general conclusion.”
—“Twelfth, from ‘to make this contemplation’ onward directly clarifies the sign that distinguishes whether the contemplation is wrong or right.”
The witness column · Zhiyi’s outline of this passage (recorded without adjudication):
中有五:一、明結上」—“The ninth is the contemplation of the Buddha’s true dharma-body. It has five parts: first, clarifying the conclusion of what precedes” 〔T37n1750 0192b25〕. 「第二、「次當更觀」下,正觀佛身」—“Second, from ‘next you should further contemplate’ onward, the direct contemplation of the Buddha’s body” 〔T37n1750 0192b25〕. 「第三、從「作是觀」下,正明觀於佛心」—“Third, from ‘makes this contemplation’ onward directly clarifies the contemplating of the Buddha’s mind” 〔T37n1750 0192b26〕. 「第四、從「作此觀者捨身他世」下,舉利勸修」—“Fourth, from ‘one who makes this contemplation, casting off the body, in the world to come’ onward raises the benefit and exhorts cultivation” 〔T37n1750 0192b27〕. 「第五、從「作是觀者」下,顯觀邪正」—“Fifth, from ‘makes this contemplation’ onward shows the contemplation to be wrong or right” 〔T37n1750 0192b28〕.
The outlines of the two commentaries on this contemplation agree broadly, and the sameness and difference in the naming of the last topic may be recorded: Shandao gives 「辨觀邪正之相」, distinguishing the sign of whether the contemplation is wrong or right, and Zhiyi gives 「顯觀邪正」, showing the contemplation to be wrong or right; both houses set up this topic in this contemplation (at the first contemplation, of the image of the sun, Zhiyi sets up none — see the first topic of that unit). Zhiyi further sets up a topic of his own, 「正明觀於佛心」, directly clarifying the contemplating of the Buddha’s mind, for which Shandao has no separate topic, gathering it instead into the five meanings of his eighth sentence. Recorded without adjudication.
II. Collation with the Alternate Translations — recorded without adjudication
There is no second Chinese translation of this sūtra. The titles of the sūtras in the twelfth volume of the Taishō canon, T12n0360 through T12n0396, have been searched: this is the only such text, and there is no alternate translation against which to collate. Recorded honestly.
Is there a parallel text of the contemplation of the true body in the other sūtras of this same axis? Nothing was found — the whole of The Amitābha Sūtra, T12n0366, and of Xuanzang’s The Sūtra on Praising the Pure Land and the Buddha’s Embrace, T12n0367, has been searched, and of such words as 「白毫」 (the white tuft) and 「八萬四千」 (eighty-four thousand) not one is found. Those two sūtras speak of that Buddha’s light and lifespan but not of the measure of his body or of his marks and excellences; what is set out in this contemplation belongs to this sūtra alone. Recorded honestly.
The text of this passage as cited in Tanluan’s Commentary on the Treatise on Birth in the Pure Land, T40n1819, differs from the base text of this edition in certain places; it is a citation and not an alternate translation, and it is recorded at the end of the ninth topic.
III. Scriptural and Treatise Grounding (the “eye”)
The place of the contemplation of the true body within the direct recompense — Shandao distinguishes the true from the provisional in the direct recompense in the Section on the Profound Meaning:
—“As for ‘the true direct recompense,’ it is the ninth contemplation, of the true body” 〔T37n1753 0246c29〕. —“It is that by the provisional direct recompense before it, scattered images are gradually stilled and the eye of the mind opens; the twofold pure recompense of that quarter with its manifold adornments is roughly seen, and thereby dullness and delusion are removed; and because the obstruction is removed one comes to see the real objects of that land” 〔T37n1753 0247a01〕.
The eighth, the contemplation of the image, is the provisional direct recompense, and this one is the true direct recompense; a figure is provisionally set up so that scattered images may be stilled, and only when they are stilled does the true object appear. This is the doctrinal ground on which this contemplation stands after that one.
The three conditions of 「念佛眾生攝取不捨」, gathering in the sentient beings who recollect the Buddha and not forsaking them — Shandao poses a question here and answers with the intimate condition, the proximate condition, and the dominant condition; it is the weightiest passage of meaning brought out in this contemplation:
「問曰:「備修眾行但能迴向皆得往生,何以佛光普照唯攝念佛者,有何意也?」」—“Question: ‘Those who fully cultivate the many practices, if only they can dedicate and direct the merit, all attain birth in that land. Why then does the Buddha’s light, which shines everywhere, gather in only those who recollect the Buddha? What is the intent of this?’” 〔T37n1753 0268a04〕. The commentary answers — 「此有三義。一明親緣」—“There are three meanings in this. The first clarifies the intimate condition” 〔T37n1753 0268a06〕.
| Condition | The commentary verbatim | Anchor |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · The intimate condition | 「眾生起行,口常稱佛,佛即聞之;身常禮敬佛,佛即見之;心常念佛,佛即知之。」—“When sentient beings set their practice going, their mouths constantly utter the Buddha’s name and the Buddha hears it; their bodies constantly pay homage to the Buddha and the Buddha sees it; their minds constantly recollect the Buddha and the Buddha knows it” 〔T37n1753 0268a06〕 · 「眾生憶念佛者,佛亦憶念眾生,彼此三業不相捨離,故名親緣也。」—“When sentient beings hold the Buddha in mind, the Buddha likewise holds sentient beings in mind; the three acts of the one and of the other do not part from each other, and therefore it is called the intimate condition” 〔T37n1753 0268a08〕 | — |
| 2 · The proximate condition | 「二明近緣。 —“The second clarifies the proximate condition: sentient beings wish to see the Buddha, and the Buddha, answering their thought, is at once present before their eyes; therefore it is called the proximate condition.” | 〔T37n1753 0268a10〕 |
命欲終時,佛與聖眾自來迎接」—“The third clarifies the dominant condition: sentient beings utter and recollect the Name, and the offences of many kalpas are removed at once; when their life is about to end, the Buddha with the host of sages comes of himself to welcome them” 〔T37n1753 0268a11〕 · 「諸邪業繫無能礙者,故名增上緣也。」—“no bond of wrong karma is able to hinder them, and therefore it is called the dominant condition” 〔T37n1753 0268a13〕 | — |
What he cites as warrant are three sūtras, all of this same axis:
—“As in the forty-eight vows of The Sūtra of Measureless Life, it is clarified only that by singly recollecting Amitābha’s name one attains birth” 〔T37n1753 0268a15〕. —“Again, as in The Amitābha Sūtra, by singly recollecting Amitābha’s name for one day or for seven days one attains birth” 〔T37n1753 0268a17〕. —“Again, in the texts of the good done in concentration and of the good done in a scattered mind in this sūtra, it is marked only that by singly recollecting the Name one attains birth. Instances of this kind are not one alone” 〔T37n1753 0268a18〕. —“The extensive display of the samādhi of recollecting the Buddha is herewith finished” 〔T37n1753 0268a20〕.
That the light of that Buddha is the most honoured comes from the larger sūtra:
—“The majestic light of the Buddha of Measureless Life is the most honoured and the first; the light of the other buddhas cannot reach it” 〔T12n0360 0270a23〕.
The sūtras and treatises Zhiyi attaches to this contemplation — he cites five, all sūtras and treatises handed down by the masters of old:
| Cited | Verbatim | Anchor |
|---|---|---|
| The Explanatory Treatise (the three kinds of kindness) | 「《釋論》云:慈有三種:一眾生緣,無心攀緣一切眾生,而於眾生自然現益」—“The Explanatory Treatise says: kindness is of three kinds. The first has sentient beings as object: without raising the mind to lay hold of any sentient being, benefit appears of itself upon sentient beings” | 〔T37n1750 0192c11〕 |
—“As The Nirvāṇa Sūtra says, ‘I in truth do not go; it is the power of the wholesome root of kindness that can let sentient beings see such things.’” | 〔T37n1750 0192c13〕 |
| The Explanatory Treatise (the simile of the fish’s spawn) | 「《釋論》云「譬如魚子,母若不念,子則爛壞,眾生亦爾。 —“The Explanatory Treatise says, ‘It is like the spawn of a fish: if the mother does not hold them in mind, the young rot away. So it is with sentient beings: if the Buddha does not hold them in mind, their wholesome roots decay.’” | 〔T37n1750 0192c19〕 |
—“Therefore the Pratyutpanna Sūtra says, ‘Sentient beings asked the Buddha: by what cause and condition may one be born in this land? Amitābha Buddha answered: by cultivating the samādhi of recollecting the Buddha one is born in my land.’” | 〔T37n1750 0192c26〕 |
| The Treatise on the Jewel-Nature · the Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom | 「《寶性論》明佛毫相在兩眉間,闊三百六十萬里,方圓亦然。」—“The Treatise on the Jewel-Nature clarifies that the Buddha’s tuft-mark lies between the two brows, three million six hundred thousand leagues broad, and as much square and round” 〔T37n1750 0193a01〕 · 「《智度論》云「為增長諸菩薩念佛三昧故,說般若波羅蜜經。」」—“The Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom says, ‘It was to increase the bodhisattvas’ samādhi of recollecting the Buddha that the sūtras of the perfection of wisdom were spoken.’” 〔T37n1750 0193a05〕 | — |
What the two houses attach here is not the same meaning: Shandao explains by the three conditions why the light gathers in those who recollect the Buddha alone, and returns it to the uttering of the Name; Zhiyi explains the Buddha’s mind by the three kinds of kindness of the Explanatory Treatise, and returns it to the substance of the kindness that is without object. Recorded without adjudication.
IV. Essentials of the Commentary on This Passage (the Commentary in Four Fascicles, line by line)
The six matters of the general contemplation of the bodily form — the commentary divides them beneath its fourth sentence:
—“The first clarifies the size of the tuft-mark; the second, the size of the eyes; the third, the size of the light of the pores; the fourth, the size of the circular radiance; the fifth, how many the manifested Buddhas are; the sixth, how many the attendants are” 〔T37n1753 0267c27〕.
The five matters of the particular marks whose light benefits —
—“The first clarifies how many the marks are; the second, how many the excellences; the third, how many the rays; the fourth, how far or near the light shines; the fifth, that where the light reaches, the benefit of being gathered in is received in particular” 〔T37n1753 0268a02〕.
The answer in three conditions (given in full in the third topic) closes with a saying:
「自餘眾行,雖名是善,若比念佛者,全非比校也」—“As for the other practices, though they are called good, if they be set beside the recollection of the Buddha they are altogether past comparing” 〔T37n1753 0268a13〕. 「是故諸經中處處廣讚念佛功能」—“It is for this reason that in sūtra after sūtra, in place after place, the power of recollecting the Buddha is extensively praised” 〔T37n1753 0268a15〕.
The five matters of the benefit of the contemplation achieved — the sentence of this contemplation, 「以觀佛身故亦見佛心」, the commentary attaches here:
—“The first clarifies that by contemplating he comes to see the buddhas of the ten directions; the second, that because he sees the buddhas the samādhi of recollecting the Buddha is thereby brought to completion; the third, that to contemplate one buddha alone is to contemplate the body of every buddha” 〔T37n1753 0268a25〕. —“The fourth clarifies that because he sees the Buddha’s body he sees the Buddha’s mind; the fifth, that the Buddha’s mind has kindness and compassion for its substance, and that with this level and equal great kindness he embraces all things everywhere” 〔T37n1753 0268a27〕.
Why the white tuft alone is contemplated —
—“The third clarifies that the marks and excellences are many and may not be contemplated all mixed together: one contemplates the single mark of the white tuft alone, and once the white tuft can be seen, all the many marks appear of themselves” 〔T37n1753 0268b05〕. —“The fourth clarifies that once Amitābha is seen the buddhas of the ten directions are seen; the fifth, that once the buddhas are seen the prediction is received in concentration” 〔T37n1753 0268b07〕.
The closing words of the whole contemplation —
「斯乃真形量遠毫若五山,震響隨機光沾有識」—“Such is the true form: its measure far-reaching, its tuft like five mountains; its resounding answers to the capacity, and its light touches all that has consciousness” 〔T37n1753 0268b10〕. 「欲使含靈歸命注想無遺,乘佛本弘齊臨彼國」—“It is to make all that bears spirit entrust its life and pour out its imaging without remainder, and, riding the Buddha’s original vastness, come alike to that land” 〔T37n1753 0268b11〕.

| Contemplating the white tuft alone | 「唯觀白毫一相,但得見白毫者,一切眾相自然而現也。」—“One contemplates the single mark of the white tuft alone, and once the white tuft can be seen, all the many marks appear of themselves.” | 〔T37n1753 0268b05〕 | Citing the Sūtra on the Samādhi of Contemplating the Buddha and the Treatise on the Jewel-Nature to fix its measure, and saying 「正可取如釋迦毫相大小現觀,若得三昧觀心成就,方可稱彼佛相而觀也」—“one may properly take the size of Śākyamuni’s tuft-mark and contemplate it as present; only when the samādhi is attained and the contemplating mind is accomplished may one contemplate in a measure answering to that Buddha’s marks” | 〔T37n1750 0193a03〕 |
The plainest difference between the two houses lies in the measure of the body: Zhiyi reckons it by the proportion of a man’s eyes to his body and judges the three characters 「恒河沙」 to be an error of the translator 〔T37n1750 0192c07〕; Shandao sets down not one word of doubt here, and only marks the measure of the body. Both readings are recorded, no reconciliation is imposed, and no judgment is made in their stead as to which is right.
Tanluan’s Commentary on the Treatise on Birth in the Pure Land (Northern Wei) also has something to say on the same sentence, recorded here for comparison (it is not one of the two mirrors of this edition, but a master of old within this corpus who cites the passage; his period is stated as it is):
—“As The Sūtra on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life says, ‘Amitābha Tathāgata is six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of the sands of the Gaṅgā of yojanas in height, and the Buddha’s circular radiance is like a hundred koṭis of the three-thousandfold great-thousand world-system.’” 〔T40n1819 0831c29〕. 「譯者以尋而言,何其晦」—“That the translator should speak of it in terms of a fathom — how obscure that is” 〔T40n1819 0832a02〕.
What he questions is that 「相好光一尋」, the light of the marks and excellences being one fathom, in the Treatise on Birth in the Pure Land — its 「尋」, its fathom — does not answer to the measure of the body in this sūtra: the place of his question differs from Zhiyi’s, and so does his judgment. All three houses are recorded without adjudication.
VI. Terms (first occurrences — all glosses drawn from the two mirrors)
| Term | The commentary’s gloss, verbatim | Anchor | Mirror |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindness without object | 「三者無緣,無心觀理,而於平等第一義中自然安住,以無緣慈攝諸眾生。」—“The third is without object: the mind is not raised to contemplate the principle, and yet it abides of itself in the level and equal first meaning, and with this kindness without object he embraces all sentient beings.” | 〔T37n1750 0192c16〕 | Zhiyi |
| Kindness with sentient beings as object | 「一眾生緣,無心攀緣一切眾生,而於眾生自然現益」—“The first has sentient beings as object: without raising the mind to lay hold of any sentient being, benefit appears of itself upon sentient beings” | 〔T37n1750 0192c12〕 | Zhiyi |
| Kindness with dharmas as object | 「二法緣者,無心觀法,而於諸法自然普照,如日照物無所分別。」—“The second has dharmas as object: without raising the mind to contemplate dharmas, it shines of itself upon all dharmas everywhere, as the sun shines upon things making no distinctions.” | 〔T37n1750 0192c14〕 | Zhiyi |
| The true direct recompense | 「言真正報者,即第九真身觀是也。」—“As for ‘the true direct recompense,’ it is the ninth contemplation, of the true body.” | 〔T37n1753 0246c29〕 | Shandao |
| The intimate condition · the proximate condition · the dominant condition | 「彼此三業不相捨離,故名親緣也。」—“The three acts of the one and of the other do not part from each other, and therefore it is called the intimate condition” 〔T37n1753 0268a09〕 · 「佛即應念現在目前,故名近緣也。」—“The Buddha, answering their thought, is at once present before their eyes, and therefore it is called the proximate condition” 〔T37n1753 0268a10〕 · 「諸邪業繫無能礙者,故名增上緣也。」—“No bond of wrong karma is able to hinder them, and therefore it is called the dominant condition” 〔T37n1753 0268a13〕 | — | Shandao |
| The white tuft (the measure of the tuft-mark) | 「《寶性論》明佛毫相在兩眉間,闊三百六十萬里,方圓亦然。」—“The Treatise on the Jewel-Nature clarifies that the Buddha’s tuft-mark lies between the two brows, three million six hundred thousand leagues broad, and as much square and round.” | 〔T37n1750 0193a01〕 | Zhiyi (citing a treatise) |
Terms on which the two mirrors yield nothing, recorded honestly: for the three words 「那由他」 (nayuta), 「夜摩天」 (the Yāma heaven), and 「閻浮檀」 (Jambūnada), neither commentary gives a single word of gloss anywhere in its whole text (each has been searched through); and the word 「無生忍」 (the patience of non-arising) neither commentary glosses separately in this passage. This edition does not supply meanings in their stead.
The transcribed terms in this passage are more than one (yojana, samādhi, Jambūnada, nayuta, the sands of the Gaṅgā, the Yāma heaven, Mount Sumeru, and the rest); in this passage neither commentary gives either a rendered name or a Sanskrit form, and this edition does not supply them in their stead.
VII. Similes and Rhetoric
Three similes the sūtra uses of itself:
| Simile | The sūtra verbatim | Anchor | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five Mount Sumerus | 「眉間白毫右旋宛轉,如五須彌山」—“the white tuft between the brows curls to the right, winding smoothly, like five Mount Sumerus” | 〔T12n0365 0343b18〕 | The measure of the tuft-mark |
| The water of the four great seas | 「佛眼清淨如四大海水,清白分明」—“the Buddha’s eyes are pure as the water of the four great seas, clear white and distinct” | 〔T12n0365 0343b19〕 | The measure of the Buddha’s eyes |
| Mount Sumeru (the light of the pores) | 「身諸毛孔演出光明,如須彌山」—“every pore of his body sends forth light, like Mount Sumeru” | 〔T12n0365 0343b20〕 | The measure of the light of the pores |
All three give the measure of the parts of the body by the measure of mountains and seas; this is the most concentrated such passage among the contemplations of the direct recompense in this sūtra.
Similes set up by the mirror commentaries (not present in the sūtra, recorded here for reference and not to be confounded with the sūtra’s own similes):
| Simile | The commentary verbatim | Anchor | What it shows | Mirror |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The sun shining on things, making no distinctions | 「二法緣者,無心觀法,而於諸法自然普照,如日照物無所分別。」—“The second has dharmas as object: without raising the mind to contemplate dharmas, it shines of itself upon all dharmas everywhere, as the sun shines upon things making no distinctions.” | 〔T37n1750 0192c14〕 | Kindness with dharmas as object | Zhiyi (citing the Explanatory Treatise) |
| The spawn of a fish | 「譬如魚子,母若不念,子則爛壞,眾生亦爾。 —“It is like the spawn of a fish: if the mother does not hold them in mind, the young rot away. So it is with sentient beings: if the Buddha does not hold them in mind, their wholesome roots decay.” | 〔T37n1750 0192c19〕 | Gathering them in and not forsaking them | Zhiyi (citing the Explanatory Treatise) |
| Practising a craft | 「如人習巧,從少至長所作遂妙。」—“It is as when a man practises a craft: from youth to full age what he makes becomes fine.” | 〔T37n1750 0192c24〕 | Meeting the Buddha birth after birth | Zhiyi |
Two things may be recorded as rhetoric. First, this passage drives downward layer by layer with 「一一」, each single one — each single manifested Buddha, each single mark, each single excellence, each single ray — four levels nested one within another, and the number at each is eighty-four thousand: it is the deepest nesting of numbers in the whole sūtra. Second, the sūtra turns from 「不可具說」, they cannot be told in full, into 「但當憶想令心明見」, one should only hold the image in mind so that the mind sees it clearly 〔T12n0365 0343b26–b27〕, and then draws in again from 「八萬四千相好」, the eighty-four thousand marks and excellences, to 「但觀眉間白毫」—“he contemplates the white tuft between the brows alone” 〔T12n0365 0343c05〕 — first the many are stated to the utmost, and then one alone is appointed, a form of one letting out and one drawing in, of the same type as the koṭis upon koṭis of the seventh contemplation drawn in to 「如於鏡中自見面像」, as though seeing one’s own face in a mirror.
VIII. Citation and Carrying Forward
-
The Imperially Composed Praise of the Buddha of Measureless Life at the head of the fascicle gathers up the text of this unit: what the line of the praise, 「沙有八萬四千相,一一相中復如是」—“each grain of sand has eighty-four thousand marks, and within each single mark it is so again” 〔T12n0365 0340c03〕, is based upon is this passage, 「無量壽佛有八萬四千相;一一相中,各有八萬四千隨形好」—“the Buddha of Measureless Life has eighty-four thousand marks, and within each single mark there are eighty-four thousand secondary excellences conforming to the form” 〔T12n0365 0343b23〕; and what the line 「以觀佛身見佛心」—“by contemplating the Buddha’s body one sees the Buddha’s mind” 〔T12n0365 0340c05〕 is based upon is this passage, 「作是觀者,名觀一切佛身,以觀佛身故亦見佛心」—“to make this contemplation is called contemplating the body of every buddha; and because one contemplates the Buddha’s body one also sees the Buddha’s mind” 〔T12n0365 0343b29〕. These two are two of the four proofs set up in the appended topic of unit 00, where they are recorded item by item; here the place they come from is recorded in the other direction.
-
Tanluan’s Commentary on the Treatise on Birth in the Pure Land, T40n1819, cites the text of this passage on the measure of the body and the circular radiance (Northern Wei; found within this corpus): 「如《觀無量壽經》言「阿彌陀如來,身高六十萬億那由他恒河沙由旬,佛圓光如百億三千大千世界。」」—“As The Sūtra on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life says, ‘Amitābha Tathāgata is six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of the sands of the Gaṅgā of yojanas in height, and the Buddha’s circular radiance is like a hundred koṭis of the three-thousandfold great-thousand world-system’” 〔T40n1819 0831c29〕; and at the end of his commentary he again points to this sūtra as the ground for contemplating the Buddha’s body: 「若欲觀佛身,當依《觀無量壽經》。」—“If one would contemplate the Buddha’s body, one should rely on The Sūtra on Contemplating the Buddha of Measureless Life” 〔T40n1819 0839b20〕.
-
How the meaning of this contemplation carries forward inside the sūtra itself: in glossing the measure of the body in this contemplation Zhiyi cites the later text of this sūtra as his warrant — 「故文云「無量壽佛身量無邊,非是凡夫心力所及」」—“therefore the text says, ‘the measure of the body of the Buddha of Measureless Life is boundless, and beyond the reach of the mind-power of ordinary beings’” 〔T37n1750 0193a02〕 — and what he cites is the text of the thirteenth, the contemplation of mixed images 〔T12n0365 0344b27〕. This sūtra states the utmost of the body’s measure in the ninth contemplation and its boundlessness in the thirteenth, the two showing each other.
-
This contemplation is what the two that follow take up: the commentary marks the first sentence of the tenth contemplation as 「正明結成前真身觀,生後菩薩觀」—“directly clarifying the concluding of the contemplation of the true body before and the giving rise to the contemplation of the bodhisattvas that follows” 〔T37n1753 0268b15〕; and the sūtra too takes up this contemplation with 「見無量壽佛了了分明已」—“once the Buddha of Measureless Life has been seen clear and distinct” 〔T12n0365 0343c11〕 and opens the contemplation of Avalokiteśvara.
-
The point of cross-reading within this axis: the passages of the Contemplation Sūtra cited in the apparatus layer of the Amitābha Sūtra volume do not touch this unit.
IX. Placement Among the Recensions
The collation notes (<app>) within the domain of this unit come to fifteen in all, with two further items carried over by precedent (those carried over by precedent are notes whose base-text entry stands elsewhere while the precedent extends to this place, marked in parentheses in the table below):

Five things may be recorded:
① 〔T12n0365 0343b19〕 In 「佛眼清淨如四大海水」—“the Buddha’s eyes are pure as the water of the four great seas,” the two characters 「清淨」, pure, are absent from all five of the Song, the Yuan, the Ming, the Dunhuang witness, and the current-circulation printing. Zhiyi, glossing this sentence, gives 「眼如四大海水」—“the eyes are like the water of the four great seas” 〔T37n1750 0192c02〕, and what he cites is likewise without the two characters 「清淨」. Recorded without adjudication, and not one character of the base text is altered on that account.
② 〔T12n0365 0343b28〕 In 「令心明見」—“so that the mind sees it clearly,” the character 「明」 is read as 「眼」 by the Yuan, the Ming, the Dunhuang witness, and the current-circulation printing (so that it reads 「令心眼見」, let the eye of the mind see it). Shandao’s commentary cites it as 「但當憶想令心眼見也」—“one should only hold the image in mind and let the eye of the mind see it” 〔T37n1753 0268a23〕, reading 「眼」, in agreement with those four witnesses. Recorded without adjudication.
③ 〔T12n0365 0343c09〕 The three forms of the name of the contemplation — the base text reads 「遍觀一切色想」, the Yuan and the Ming read 色身相, and the Song and the current-circulation printing read 色身想. The unit name carved in this edition follows the base text. All three forms are recorded without adjudication.
④ 〔T12n0365 0343c09〕 In 「作是觀者」—“to make this contemplation,” the character 「是」 is read as 「此」 by the current-circulation printing; Shandao marks his twelfth sentence as 「從作此觀已下」 〔T37n1753 0268b09〕, citing 「此」, in agreement with the current-circulation printing, while Zhiyi marks his fifth topic as 「從「作是觀者」下」 〔T37n1750 0192b28〕, citing 「是」, in agreement with the base text. The recension each commentary followed differs in this one character, and each place is recorded without adjudication.
⑤ The collation notes of the 「敦」 (Dunhuang) witness are dense in this unit — of the fifteen items in this domain the Dunhuang witness accounts for nine. Its readings grow dense from the eighth contemplation onward: before the eighth contemplation the Dunhuang collation notes are nowhere found, and from the eighth onward there are some in every contemplation. The count is recorded honestly.
The variant wording of this passage as cited in Tanluan’s Commentary on the Treatise on Birth in the Pure Land (T40n1819; Northern Wei):
| The base text of this edition 〔T12n0365〕 | As cited in the commentary on the treatise 〔T40n1819〕 |
|---|---|
| 「佛身高六十萬億那由他恒河沙由旬」—“the Buddha’s body is six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of the sands of the Gaṅgā of yojanas in height” 〔T12n0365 0343b17〕 | 「阿彌陀如來,身高六十萬億那由他恒河沙由旬」—“Amitābha Tathāgata is six hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of the sands of the Gaṅgā of yojanas in height” 〔T40n1819 0832a01〕 |
| 「彼佛圓光如百億三千大千世界」—“that Buddha’s circular radiance is like a hundred koṭis of the three-thousandfold great-thousand world-system” 〔T12n0365 0343b21〕 | 「佛圓光如百億三千大千世界」—“the Buddha’s circular radiance is like a hundred koṭis of the three-thousandfold great-thousand world-system” 〔T40n1819 0832a02〕 |
Each item is recorded, and not one character of the base text is altered on that account.
