心要Heart-Essence

Two hundred sixty characters — across a thousand years the most recited of all sūtras in the Chinese tradition. It is this short because it was condensed to begin with: the most solid, most essential heart of the vast Mahā-prajñāpāramitā (般若), drawn out and made into a single sūtra. So 「心」 (hṛdaya) is not the "heart" of psychology, but the heart as core, as pivotal essence: to read it is to read the very heart of the whole of Prajñā.

It opens with no pleasantries; head-on, a bodhisattva sees that 「五蘊皆空」 ("the five aggregates are all empty") and right then crosses beyond all suffering and calamity. Then it does a thing that seems self-contradicting: the five aggregates, the eighteen elements, the twelvefold dependent origination, the Four Noble Truths, and even "wisdom" and "attainment" — one by one it "no's" them all away, on and on until nothing at all is attained.

Yet right there, at the dead end of this "nothing attained," the deepest secret of the whole sūtra is turned out: let go until you grasp at nothing whatever, and what is gained turns out to be a heart with no snag, with no fear, in final nirvāṇa — and even the supreme awakening of the buddhas of all three times.

Emptiness, it turns out, is not telling you to negate this world; it is telling you to see through that layer of "substantial existence" pressing down on top of it — the world is still here, and the heart is already sovereign and free.

So push open this gate, beginning with the three words "Avalokiteśvara."

(Avalokiteśvara, the Observer)

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

The whole Heart Sūtra is about "emptiness" (空, śūnyatā), yet its first line does not speak of emptiness — it speaks of a name: Avalokiteśvara (觀自在). Most take this for a courteous opening and glide past it; the ancient masters weighed it heavily — there must first be a mirror that illumines before one can speak of what is seen. And the name is itself a teaching: 「觀」 (observe) is to illumine, the wisdom that comprehends emptiness and existence; 「自在」 (sovereign) is that wisdom in operation, free, unobstructed, effortless. Inwardly one realizes the emptiness of self and of dharmas, outwardly one illumines body, speech, and mind — and this illumining is utterly spontaneous: that alone is what "sovereign" means. So the Heart Sūtra's opening is not vague at all; it first calls forth a bodhisattva who has cultivated the contemplation of emptiness to the point of sovereign ease — as much as to tell you that emptiness is not a doctrine to be memorized by rote, but a contemplation that can be cultivated, can be realized, and once accomplished brings sovereign ease. Now watch this Avalokiteśvara (觀自在) — how does he course, how does he illumine?

Coursing in the Deep Prajñā

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

「行深般若」 carries a single word, 「深」 (deep), that is easy to read straight past — yet it is the hinge: if there is a deep prajñā, then there is a shallow one too, so where is the difference? We hear the Dharma and grasp that "all dharmas are empty," and this too is prajñā — but it is the shallow kind, worked out by thought. The ancient masters pierce the depth through: coursing deep is nondiscriminating cognition (nirvikalpa-jñāna) inwardly realizing the two emptinesses (二空) — without even the discrimination "I am contemplating emptiness," with the contemplating and the contemplated both stilled. Shallow prajñā stops at "I've thought it through"; deep prajñā advances to "the two emptinesses present before one." And 「波羅蜜多」 (pāramitā) states where this wisdom is bound — wisdom reaching the far shore — because it can sever the obstructions: the obstruction of the afflictions and the obstruction to the knowable are severed portion by portion, and a person crosses from the near shore of birth-and-death toward nirvāṇa. So this is no airy state, but a wisdom that can part from discrimination, sever the obstructions, and ferry one across the river. It is precisely because what he courses in is this prajñā, deep enough that grasper and grasped are both extinguished, that the next illumining can reach to the very bottom of the five aggregates.

Heart Sūtra · Part 3 — Seeing the Five Aggregates as Empty

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

"照見五蘊皆空 — seeing the five aggregates as all empty" is the eye of the whole sūtra; every later "無 / no" grows out of this one line. Yet it is also the easiest line to misread: the five aggregates (skandhas) are this entire body-and-mind of mine, so when it says they are all empty, is it telling me to see myself as a stretch of sheer nothingness? Many people fear 空 (emptiness, śūnyatā) precisely here. The ancient masters mean, at this very pass, to have us hear the word "空" rightly — "空" does not say the five aggregates are not there; it says they have no self-nature. What is emptied is that layer of "a solid me, a solid body-and-mind" you fix on top of them — not the body-and-mind that arises through conditions and goes on functioning as usual. Feeling still feels, thoughts still rise and fall; only the graspable "me" is seen through as never having been there to begin with. As for why the Buddha covers everything over with one stroke of "皆空 — all empty": that is hidden intent (密意). Beings are sick with grasping at existence, so the Buddha simply declares one blanket "emptiness" first, to pry open the hand that will not let go. So this is not a line that leaves one cold; it is a line that loosens the bonds — you need not negate this living body-and-mind, only see through the illusion pressing down on it, and right there is coolness and ease.

(Crossing Beyond All Suffering)

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

「照見五蘊皆空,度一切苦厄」 — "seeing the five aggregates as empty, he crosses beyond all suffering" — are joined so tightly that they raise a doubt: between seeing-through and freedom from suffering, has a step been skipped? Once the principle is understood in thought, do the real sufferings — illness, age, parting, affliction — really vanish on the strength of a single "I get it"? The ancient masters' answer is not "once you get it, the suffering is gone," but a pointing to the root of suffering: suffering has a basis to rest on, a single heavy knot of bondage that the two obstructions — the afflictive and the cognitive — have tied at the floor of the mind. Kuiji gives a strikingly vivid simile: 「如蛾出繭,永離纏裹」— "like a moth emerging from its cocoon, forever freed from the binding wrappings." The moth escapes not by waiting for someone to cut the cocoon open, but by departing the wrapping and breaking out of itself. Human suffering is the same: that grasping at "a real self" is the cocoon; seeing the five aggregates as empty loosens this grasping from within — suffering is not taken away by anyone; you yourself come out of the bondage. So 度 ("cross") is going over, is slipping free. Seeing-through negates grasping; with grasping negated the wrapping departs; with the wrapping departed suffering is crossed beyond — link locks into link, and nothing is skipped. This is no abstract talk; it is a road that, walked to its end, brings freedom from suffering.

Heart Sūtra · Part 5 Form Is Itself Emptiness

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

「色即是空」("form is itself emptiness") is a line everyone can recite, yet think it through and you stall: the table plainly sounds when you knock it — how can it be said to just be empty? Must we wait until it crumbles to ash before it counts as empty? This passage lifts that misunderstanding gently aside — what is emptied was never the present arising form before you, but the layer you forcibly fastened onto it: "solid, self-standing, holding itself up." The ancients had a superb image: a person with a diseased eye sees flowers in empty space (翳花, the sky-flower seen by a diseased eye) — must those flowers wait until they wither before they are empty? No: they never truly bloomed at all. The world before you is the same: it need not be destroyed by a hair's breadth — only see through that layer of "real existence," and in its very substance it is empty. This is why the Buddha at once turns back and adds「空即是色」("emptiness is itself form"): do not now run off to find some clean emptiness outside form — that true emptiness never departs from this living, present form. And the closing line,「受、想、行、識,亦復如是」("feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are likewise so"), fits this one key at once to the whole of body and mind: to see the five aggregates as empty is not to teach you to press feeling and thought into dead stillness, but to stop grasping at them as holdable, solid things — what is empty is the grasping, not the aliveness. Form still stands, grasping is negated; this is where Prajñā's crossing-beyond-suffering takes hold.

Heart Sūtra · Part 6 — The Six Marks of Emptiness

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

The last passage said "五蘊皆空 — the five aggregates are all empty"; this one sketches a face for that "emptiness": neither arising nor ceasing, neither defiled nor pure, neither increasing nor decreasing. Yet think it over and a doubt rises: flowers bloom and fade, people fall ill and recover, money grows and dwindles — how is it that the moment one steps into the mark of emptiness, all of this is met with a "neither"? Is it asking us to deny the arising-and-ceasing laid out plain before us? The ancient masters say the crux outright: these six "neithers" do not negate the events but that layer of "real arising-and-ceasing, real defilement-and-purity." Flowers blooming and fading still appear upon dependent arising; what is denied is only "a real entity truly arising and truly ceasing." The three pairs of "neither" answer exactly to three entanglements of the human heart: neither arising nor ceasing clears away the grasping at is-it-there-or-not; neither defiled nor pure clears away the grasping at is-it-good-or-bad; neither increasing nor decreasing clears away the grasping at is-it-much-or-little. Three rulers brought to measure the world find nothing to rest on before the true face of emptiness (空相, śūnyatā-lakṣaṇa) — not that the world has vanished, but that your measuring with its "real graduations" has fallen through. Read these six "neithers" through, and the long string of "無 / no" in the next passage has its governing thread.

Heart Sūtra · Part 7 Negating the Six Gates

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

無苦集滅道;無智亦無得」 — reading this far, many feel their heart sink: how is it that even the twelve sense-fields, the eighteen elements, the four noble truths — these dharmas the Buddha spoke with his own mouth — are negated one after another? And at the end, even the cognition one cultivates and the fruit one realizes are said to be absent — is this not tearing the whole of Buddhism to pieces? Here the ancient masters mean to have us hear the word "無" rightly: what is negated is not these dharmas, but the layer of grasping that seizes them as "real existence." To put it by a plain analogy, the aggregates, sense-fields, elements, and truths are like a raft for crossing a river — the raft is to be used well, but once across you cannot hoist it onto your head and insist it is your eternal, really-existent possession. The whole string of "無" negates the grasping that hauls the raft up onto the shore — not a prohibition against boarding the raft to cross. The eye of the whole passage rests on the last line, 「無智亦無得」: even this final trace of grasper-and-grasped — "I have a cognition that cultivates, facing a fruit that is attained" — is loosened. This does not negate that practice is of use; it is that, cultivated to the very last, one does not even grasp at "I have realized emptiness" — and this alone is truly arriving home.

Heart Sūtra · Part 8 Because Nothing Is Attained

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

「以無所得故」 ("because nothing is attained") is five characters only, wedged between a long string of "no … no …" and the "attaining bodhi, final nirvāṇa" that follows — easy to read straight past. Yet it is the axle of the entire Heart Sūtra: the "no" of the first half is gathered up here, and the "attainment" of the second half is born from here. But "nothing attained" hardly sounds like good news: after all that practice, you end up with nothing at all attained — wasn't it for nothing? The ancient masters put their finger on it: non-attainment (無所得) is not coming back empty-handed, it is no longer grasping — it negates the standoff between "the self that attains" and "the dharma that is attained"; it does not say you have accomplished nothing. And only with nothing attained does the road open through: ordinary beings are not free precisely because, thought after thought, they are attaining something, clutching at an object, gripping a result, and this very clinging is the bondage; let the clinging of grasper-and-grasped go, and the mind without obstruction, final nirvāṇa, the buddhas of the three times attaining bodhi — all are born from here. So this is not the closing bill of practice; it is the axle — non-attainment is precisely the gate to true attainment.

Heart Sūtra · Unit 9 The Fruit Attained, and the Mantra

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

The previous passage drove the reader to "attaining utterly nothing"; this one answers: having let go all the way to nothing, what in the end do you get? The Heart Sūtra gives two layers of fruit. The bodhisattva's fruit is a chain coming loose: 心無罣礙, the mind is unobstructed — the grasper-and-grasped that hooked the mind loosens; 無有恐怖, there is no fear — the "self" that dreaded losing is empty; far removed from inversion; 究竟涅槃, final nirvāṇa. The buddhas' fruit is more stupendous still: even becoming a buddha relies on this prajñā, and "attaining unsurpassed awakening" is to take your eight consciousnesses, defiled by grasping, and transform them in their very substance into the pure four cognitions and the perfect three bodies — becoming a buddha is not gaining some further thing outside oneself, but a whole life utterly transformed into wisdom. At the last the Heart Sūtra gathers the prajñā it has expounded all along into a great-bright mantra (大明咒): prajñā is precisely the great brightness that breaks the dark of ignorance. How the closing 揭帝揭帝… ("gate gate …") is to be received, the two ancient masters set forth side by side without adjudication — Kuiji preserves the Sanskrit sound as an esoteric retention; Woncheuk glosses it word for word as "go, go, go to the far shore." A thousand words have said "emptiness" to its limit; at last it settles into a single sound, so that you no longer linger over reasoning but set out on the road at once: Go — go to the far shore.
