Essence

The whole Heart Sūtra is about "emptiness" (空, śūnyatā), yet its first line does not speak of emptiness — it speaks of a name: Avalokiteśvara (觀自在). Most take this for a courteous opening and glide past it; the ancient masters weighed it heavily — there must first be a mirror that illumines before one can speak of what is seen. And the name is itself a teaching: 「觀」 (observe) is to illumine, the wisdom that comprehends emptiness and existence; 「自在」 (sovereign) is that wisdom in operation, free, unobstructed, effortless. Inwardly one realizes the emptiness of self and of dharmas, outwardly one illumines body, speech, and mind — and this illumining is utterly spontaneous: that alone is what "sovereign" means. So the Heart Sūtra's opening is not vague at all; it first calls forth a bodhisattva who has cultivated the contemplation of emptiness to the point of sovereign ease — as much as to tell you that emptiness is not a doctrine to be memorized by rote, but a contemplation that can be cultivated, can be realized, and once accomplished brings sovereign ease. Now watch this Avalokiteśvara (觀自在) — how does he course, how does he illumine?

白話Plain reading

The sūtra says (經曰):

Plain-language rewrite:

There is a bodhisattva, named the Sovereign Observer (觀自在 / Avalokiteśvara).

(The three characters 「觀自在」 are this bodhisattva's name: his observing is free and sovereign, wholly unobstructed. It is from him that this sūtra begins.)

義疏Exposition

An opening easy to slide past

The whole Heart Sūtra is about "emptiness" (空) — form is empty, the five aggregates are empty, no cognition and no attainment (無智無得). Yet its very first line does not speak of emptiness; it speaks of a name: Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

Most readers take this line as a courteous opening and glide right past it. The ancient masters, in fact, weighed it heavily. Woncheuk says this is the very first matter within the "first division" (初分), called marking the person who can observe (標能觀人) — first one sets up "this person who can observe, this cognition that can observe," and only then do the later "coursing deeply, illumining and seeing, all empty" (行深、照見、皆空) have anything to rest upon. Put another way: there must first be a mirror that illumines before one can speak of what is seen within the mirror. The Heart Sūtra is not propounding some doctrine of "emptiness" out of thin air; there is one who has personally realized it, stepping forward to demonstrate how he observes.

This name "觀自在" is itself a teaching

The name was not given at random. Kuiji unpacks it for us: 「『觀』者,照義」("'observe' (觀) carries the sense of illumining") — to observe is to illumine, the very wisdom that comprehends emptiness and existence; 「『自在』者,縱任義」("'sovereign' (自在) carries the sense of free disposal") — sovereign means that this wisdom, in operation, is free, unobstructed, effortless. Woncheuk puts it still more aptly: 「內證二空,外觀三業,不依功用,任運自在」("inwardly realizing the two emptinesses, outwardly observing the three actions, not relying on effortful function, sovereign in spontaneous operation"). Inwardly, one personally realizes the emptiness of self and the emptiness of dharmas — the two emptinesses (二空); outwardly, one illumines the three actions of body, speech, and mind (三業); and this illumining requires no forcing, no contrivance — it is utterly natural. This alone is what "sovereign" means.

So the three characters 「觀自在」 amount to settling, from the outset, this sūtra's cognition that observes (能觀): it is a nondiscriminating cognition (無分別智) that illumines without clinging, and so is freely sovereign. The later "coursing in the deep prajñā" (行深般若) says this cognition is in operation; "illumined and saw the five aggregates are all empty" (照見五蘊皆空) says what this cognition illumined. The wellspring of all of it lies within this name.

This "observing," as Yogācāra sees it

Hold up the mirror of Yogācāra, and this "cognition that observes" grows clearer still. After expounding the title, Kuiji deliberately marks out the fivefold Consciousness-Only contemplation (五重唯識觀) as the framework for the whole sūtra's gate of contemplation: 「聖教所說唯識,雖無量種,不過五重。一、遣虛存實——觀遍計所執唯虛妄起,都無體用,應正遣除」("The Consciousness-Only the sacred teaching sets forth, though of measureless kinds, does not exceed five layers. First, dispelling the unreal and retaining the real — contemplating that the wholly-imagined nature (parikalpita) arises only as false fabrication, wholly without substance or function, and should be rightly dispelled").

This first layer, "dispelling the unreal and retaining the real" (遣虛存實), is precisely the observer's point of entry: dispel that layer of false fabrication your mind has set up (the wholly-imagined nature, parikalpita), and retain the layer that arises through conditions and is not nonexistent (the other-dependent and the perfectly-accomplished, paratantra and pariniṣpanna). From "illumined and saw the five aggregates are all empty" to "no cognition and no attainment" (無智亦無得), the whole Heart Sūtra dispels, layer upon layer, only the "unreal," and retains, throughout, "real-marks" (實相) — and the one who wields this cognition that dispels-the-unreal-and-retains-the-real, and wields it with sovereign ease, is Avalokiteśvara (觀自在). When the mirror illumines this far, the name and the whole sūtra link up.

The mirror of Yogācāra: one and the same matter, the name and the meaning

It is not that the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara was conjured up out of Yogācāra teaching, nor that this name can only be understood by leaning on Yogācāra. It is one and the same cognition — "illumining without discriminating, illumining yet not grasping" (無分別而照、照而不執): the Heart Sūtra marks it with a name, 「觀自在」 (Avalokiteśvara); Yogācāra states it as "nondiscriminating cognition" (無分別智) and the "fivefold Consciousness-Only contemplation" (五重唯識觀). One is a personified demonstration, the other a technical analysis — both pointing to the very same cognition that observes. The mirror is not the sūtra (鏡非經).

So this sūtra's opening is not vague at all: it first calls forth a bodhisattva who has cultivated the contemplation of emptiness to the point of sovereign ease — which is as much as to tell you that emptiness is not a doctrine to be memorized by rote, but a contemplation that can be cultivated, can be realized, and once accomplished brings sovereign ease. Now watch how he courses, how he illumines.

Woncheuk's Praise (《贊》) classifies this as the opening of the first division, "clarifying the cognition that observes" (初分「明能觀智」): first "marking the person who can observe" (標能觀人), then "discerning the substance of the observing cognition" (辨觀智體). As he writes: 「『觀自在菩薩』者,就初分中復分為二,初、標能觀人,次、辨觀智體,此即第一標能觀人」("As for 'Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva,' within the first division it further divides into two: first, marking the person who can observe; second, discerning the substance of the observing cognition — this is the first, marking the person who can observe") 〔T1711 0543b19〕. Kuiji's Profound Praise (《幽贊》) takes "Avalokiteśvara" (觀自在) and the rest as the beginning of breaking the two graspings and revealing the two emptinesses (破二執、顯二空) 〔T1710 0524b04〕, and after expounding the title sets out the fivefold Consciousness-Only contemplation (五重唯識觀) as the framework for the whole sūtra's gate of contemplation 〔T1710 0526c17〕.

What the variants turn on: the base text, together with Facheng / Dānapāla / Prajñā-and-Liyan, reads 觀自在 ("the Sovereign Observer"); only Kumārajīva reads 觀世音 ("Regarder of the World's Sounds"); Prajñācakra alone reads 觀世音自在. Faxue's expanded recension lists 「觀世音菩薩」 at the head of the assembly 〔0849a09〕, yet in the body the protagonist is still called 「觀自在菩薩摩訶薩」 〔0849a17〕. Not one recension reads

3 · Yogācāra Doctrinal Basis (唯識義之經據) (eye)

「觀自在」 ("Avalokiteśvara") marks the whole sūtra's cognition that observes (能觀智) — this "observing" (觀) is the nondiscriminating wisdom that comprehends emptiness-and-existence (了空有慧), the source from which the later "coursing deeply" (行深) and "illumined and saw" (照見) flow. Kuiji's fivefold Consciousness-Only contemplation (五重唯識觀) subsumes this sūtra's contemplation of emptiness: 「今詳聖教所說唯識,雖無量種,不過五重。 觀遍計所執唯虛妄起,都無體用,應正遣除」("Examining now the Consciousness-Only that the sacred teaching sets forth: though of measureless kinds, it does not exceed five layers. First, dispelling the unreal and retaining the real — contemplating that the wholly-imagined nature (parikalpita) arises only as false fabrication, wholly without substance or function, and should be rightly dispelled") 〔T1710 0526c17〕. → Corresponds to the observer in the Triṃśikā's 「是諸識轉變」 ("these consciousnesses transforming") and to the fivefold Consciousness-Only of the Cheng-weishi-lun.

4 · Ancient-Master Readings (諸家異釋·古德·標宗)

Kuiji, Profound Praise (《

昔行六度,今得果圓,慧觀為先,成十自在」("'Observe' (觀) carries the sense of illumining — the wisdom that comprehends emptiness-and-existence; 'sovereign' (自在) carries the sense of free disposal — the supreme fruit attained. Formerly coursing in the six perfections, now attaining the round fruit; wise contemplation came first, and the ten sovereignties were accomplished") 〔T1710 0524b23〕.
  • On the rendering: 「但言觀音,詞、義俱失」("To say merely 'Avalokita-svara' (觀音) loses both the wording and the meaning") 〔T1710 0524c03〕.

Woncheuk, Praise (《

  • Glossing the name: 「而今本云觀自在者,內證二空,外觀三業,不依功用,任運自在,故曰觀自在」("As for the present text saying 'Avalokiteśvara' (觀自在): inwardly realizing the two emptinesses, outwardly observing the three actions, not relying on effortful function, sovereign in spontaneous operation — therefore called the Sovereign Observer") 〔T1711 0543b24〕.
  • On the old recension: 「若依舊本名觀世音,觀諸世間稱菩薩名音聲語…」("If following the old recension, named 'Regarder of the World's Sounds' (觀世音), observing the sounds and speech by which the worlds call the bodhisattva's name…") 〔T1711 0543b21〕.

The two commentaries both record the glosses of the two names 「觀自在/觀世音」, setting them side by side without adjudicating (並陳不裁).
