Essence

「照見五蘊皆空,度一切苦厄」 — "seeing the five aggregates as empty, he crosses beyond all suffering" — are joined so tightly that they raise a doubt: between seeing-through and freedom from suffering, has a step been skipped? Once the principle is understood in thought, do the real sufferings — illness, age, parting, affliction — really vanish on the strength of a single "I get it"? The ancient masters' answer is not "once you get it, the suffering is gone," but a pointing to the root of suffering: suffering has a basis to rest on, a single heavy knot of bondage that the two obstructions — the afflictive and the cognitive — have tied at the floor of the mind. Kuiji gives a strikingly vivid simile: 「如蛾出繭,永離纏裹」— "like a moth emerging from its cocoon, forever freed from the binding wrappings." The moth escapes not by waiting for someone to cut the cocoon open, but by departing the wrapping and breaking out of itself. Human suffering is the same: that grasping at "a real self" is the cocoon; seeing the five aggregates as empty loosens this grasping from within — suffering is not taken away by anyone; you yourself come out of the bondage. So 度 ("cross") is going over, is slipping free. Seeing-through negates grasping; with grasping negated the wrapping departs; with the wrapping departed suffering is crossed beyond — link locks into link, and nothing is skipped. This is no abstract talk; it is a road that, walked to its end, brings freedom from suffering.

白話Plain reading

The sūtra says (經曰):

Plain rewrite:

And just so, he crossed beyond all suffering and distress.

(度 means to go over, to slip free; 一切苦厄 means all the sufferings and all the troubles within birth-and-death. The moment he saw the five aggregates as empty, he slipped free, right then and there, from all suffering and distress.)

義疏Exposition

Is a Step Missing Between Insight and Freedom?

「照見五蘊皆空,度一切苦厄」 — "seeing the five aggregates as empty, he crosses beyond all suffering and distress" — these two lines are joined so tightly that they raise a doubt: between seeing-through and freedom from suffering, a step seems to have been skipped. On what grounds does "illumining emptiness" amount to "crossing beyond all suffering"? Once the principle is understood in thought, does real suffering — illness, age, parting, affliction — really vanish on the strength of a single "I get it"?

It is a good question to raise. The ancient masters' answer is not "once you get it, the suffering is gone," but a pointing to where the root of suffering lies.

The Root of Suffering Is a Layer of Wrapping

Yogācāra looks at "suffering" and sees that it does not come out of nowhere; it has a basis to rest on — and that basis is called 麁重 (the gross-heaviness, dauṣṭhulya): a single heavy knot of bondage that the seeds of the afflictive obstruction and the cognitive obstruction have tied at the floor of your mind. You undergo suffering because this layer of bondage is still there; so long as you still grasp at "there being a real self," this knot of gross-heaviness cannot be undone, and suffering has somewhere to lodge.

This is why Kuiji says that 度一切苦厄 ("crossing beyond all suffering") speaks of 轉依 (the transformation of the basis): 「度苦厄,捨麁重依得無麁重」— "to cross beyond suffering and distress is to cast off the gross-heaviness-basis and gain the absence of gross-heaviness." Seeing the five aggregates as empty negates the grasping at "a real self and real dharmas," and that knot of a gross-heaviness-basis is thereby cast off; casting off the gross-heaviness-basis and gaining in its place a purified basis — this is what is called the transformation of the basis. Suffering is not extinguished by some outside force; rather the very layer of wrapping on which it stood loosens and falls away.

A Moth Breaking Out of Its Cocoon

Kuiji gives a strikingly vivid simile: 「既照性空,離諸分別,如蛾出繭,永離纏裹,便度苦厄」— "having illumined the emptiness of nature and departed from all discrimination, like a moth emerging from its cocoon, forever freed from the binding wrappings, one thereupon crosses beyond suffering and distress."

The moth inside the cocoon is bound tightly by a layer of silk. It escapes not by waiting for someone to cut the cocoon open from outside, but by departing that wrapping bit by bit, of itself, and breaking out.

Human suffering is just like this. That grasping at "a real self" is the cocoon, is the wrapping. Seeing the five aggregates as empty amounts to loosening this grasping from within — suffering is not taken away by anyone; you yourself come out of the bondage. So the word 度 ("cross"), Kuiji glosses as 「越也,脫也」— "to go over, to slip free": it is going over, it is slipping free, it is walking out by oneself, not being carried away. And this fills in the step that seemed to have been skipped between "seeing-through" and "freedom from suffering": seeing-through negates grasping; with grasping negated, the gross-heaviness-basis is cast off; with the gross-heaviness cast off, the wrapping departs; with the wrapping departed, suffering and distress are crossed beyond. Link locks into link, and nothing is skipped.

The Mirror of Yogācāra: One Road, the Sūtra's Word and the Treatise's Word

It is not that the Heart Sūtra's "crossing of suffering" needs Yogācāra's "transformation of the basis" in order to hold; nor that Yogācāra copied it from the Heart Sūtra. It is one and the same matter — "negating grasping, casting off the gross-heaviness, coming out of the wrapping" — which the Heart Sūtra carries in the single line 度一切苦厄 ("crossing beyond all suffering"), and which Yogācāra, with 轉依 ("transformation of the basis") and 捨二麁重 ("casting off the two gross-heavinesses"), spells out in detail as the mechanism in between.

Here the opening section on the "cognition that observes" comes full circle: Avalokiteśvara (the one who observes), coursing in the deep prajñā (the cognition that observes), seeing the five aggregates as empty (the emptiness that the cognition illumines), and crossing beyond all suffering (the fruit of illumining emptiness) — a single bodhisattva, holding up the deep nondiscriminating cognition, illumines and shatters the grasping at the real, and emerges from his own cocoon. This is no piece of abstract talk; it is a road that goes through, and that, walked to its end, brings freedom from suffering.

1 · Placement in the Doctrinal Outline

Following the self-benefit of 照見五蘊皆空 ("seeing the five aggregates as empty"), Woncheuk 圓測 takes 度一切苦厄 ("crossing beyond all suffering") to show the other side of the function of cognition 〔T1711 0544a06「用有二種,一者自利、二者利他」— "the function is twofold: first self-benefit, second benefiting others"〕. Kuiji 窺基 uses this phrase to conclude the opening section — "smashing the two graspings and disclosing the two emptinesses, able thereby to cross beyond the manifold sufferings of beings" — and reads it through 轉依/練磨 (the transformation of the basis / spurring-on practice) 〔T1710 0536a05〕.

What the variant turns on: Kumārajīva and Xuanzang read 度一切苦厄 ("crosses beyond all suffering and distress"); Prajñā-with-Liyan and Prajñācakra read 離諸苦厄 ("departs from all suffering and distress") — 離 ("depart from") and 度 ("cross beyond") used interchangeably. The three expanded recensions of Dharmacandra, Dharmasiddhi, and Dānapāla have no "度/離…苦厄" line at this position (verified by a full sweep of the text; the absence is recorded, not surmised). No recension reads 度諸苦厄. Kuiji glosses 度 ("cross"): 「『度』者,越也,脫也」— "'To cross' means to go over, to slip free" 〔T1710 0536a15〕.

3 · Yogācāra Doctrinal Basis (唯識義之經據 · the eye)

度一切苦厄 ("crossing beyond all suffering") is read in Yogācāra as 轉依 (the transformation of the basis, āśraya-parāvṛtti): seeing the five aggregates as empty (negating the wholly-imagined, 遣遍計) is precisely the casting-off of the gross-heaviness-basis held by the two obstructions — the afflictive and the cognitive — and the attainment in their place of a purified basis, whereupon suffering and distress depart. Kuiji: 「度苦厄,捨麁重依得無麁重」— "to cross beyond suffering and distress is to cast off the gross-heaviness-basis and gain the absence of gross-heaviness" 〔T1710 0536a13〕. → This corresponds to the Triṃśikā's 「捨二麁重故,便證得轉依」("because the two gross-heavinesses are cast off, the transformation of the basis is realized") and to the two fruits of the transformation of the basis in the Cheng Weishi Lun.

4 · Ancient-Master Readings (諸家異釋 · ancient masters, marking the tenet)

Kuiji, Yōuzàn 《

  • Concluding the crossing of suffering by the two emptinesses: 「此上略說破二執、顯二空能度眾苦,既照性空,離諸分別,如蛾出繭,永離纏裹,便度苦厄,疾證涅槃」— "What has been said above briefly sets out the smashing of the two graspings and the disclosure of the two emptinesses, by which one is able to cross beyond the manifold sufferings of beings; having illumined the emptiness of nature and departed from all discrimination, like a moth emerging from its cocoon (如蛾出繭), one is forever freed from the binding wrappings, thereupon crosses beyond suffering and distress, and swiftly realizes nirvāṇa" 〔T1710 0536a05〕.
  • Transformation-of-basis / encouragement to practice: 「度苦厄,捨麁重依得無麁重,我亦應爾,勵已增修,不應自輕而生退屈」— "to cross beyond suffering and distress is to cast off the gross-heaviness-basis and gain the absence of gross-heaviness; I too should be thus — spurring myself to increase cultivation, not belittling myself and falling back" 〔T1710 0536a13〕.

Woncheuk, Zàn 《贊》: assigns 度一切苦厄 ("crossing beyond all suffering") to the benefiting-others aspect of the function of cognition 〔T1711 0544a06〕.

6 · Simile · Figure (譬喻·修辭)

The moth-emerging-from-its-cocoon simile (蛾出繭喻, Kuiji): 「既照性空,離諸分別,如蛾出繭,永離纏裹,便度苦厄」— "having illumined the emptiness of nature and departed from all discrimination, like a moth emerging from its cocoon, one is forever freed from the binding wrappings and thereupon crosses beyond suffering and distress" 〔T1710 0536a05〕.

  • Vehicle (喻體): the moth breaking out of its cocoon by itself.
  • Tenor (喻依): the practitioner illumining the emptiness of nature and departing from discriminative grasping.
  • Meaning disclosed: the cocoon is the binding wrapping of grasping (麁重, gross-heaviness); the moth does not wait for the cocoon to be destroyed by some outside force — it departs the wrapping and emerges of itself. So too the crossing of suffering: suffering is not extinguished by an external power; rather the bondage of grasping loosens of itself and slips free — this is the self-verification of the transformation of the basis (轉依).
