Kausīdya · kosajja

saṃskṛta

kausīdya < kusīda(懶、惰;Vedic adjective)+ -ya(抽象後綴)——「懶惰之質」。

kausīdyaṃ katamat / nidrā-pārśva-śayana-sukha-allikām āgamya moha-aṃśikaḥ cetaso 'nabhyutsāhaḥ / kuśala-pakṣa-prayoga-paripantha-karmakam //

#25 vīrya#49 kausīdya
kuśala-pakṣa-paripūraṇa-pariniṣpādana(圓滿成就善品)kuśala-pakṣa-prayoga-paripantha(障善加行)

pāḷi

Pāli kosajja < Skt kausīdya

  • middha(眠)——#12

南傳套語(廣泛出現於 AN 8.30 Anuruddha-mahāvitakka、DN 33 Saṅgīti、AN 4.13 Padhāna):

Kosajjaṃ pahāya āraddhaviriyo viharati...

「懈怠」之梵文 kausīdya 源自 kusīda(Vedic 形容詞「懶、惰」)+ -ya(抽象後綴)——「懶惰之質」。

Etymology

Sanskrit kausīdya derives from kusīda (Vedic adjective "lazy, indolent") with the abstract suffix -ya. Sanskrit-internal analysis suggests ku- ("bad, ill") + sīda- (connected to √sad "to sit") — yielding a possible image of "ill-sitting" or "failing to rise from sitting." The PIE reconstruction is unsettled: no confirmed Iranian or wider IE cognate has been established, and the prefix ku- has unclear PIE-level origins. The Pāli form kosajja inherits the compound through regular phonology. Whatever the final PIE verdict, the Asaṅga definition's trigger — nidrā-pārśva-śayana-sukha-allikā (sleep, side-lying, attachment to ease) — directly enacts the "slumping" image that Indo-Iranian internal etymology suggests.

Doctrinal frame

Kausīdya is the second of the eight major secondary afflictions. Asaṅga's Abhidharma-samuccaya defines it as cetaso 'nabhyutsāha — "the mind's lacking of vigor" — and this is a precise morphological mirror of vīrya (#25): vīrya = kuśale cetaso 'bhyutsāha (the mind's abhyutsāha in the wholesome); kausīdya = cetaso 'nabhyutsāha (the mind's an-abhyutsāha). The function-clause is asymmetric in an instructive way: vīrya's function spans all five phases of practice (vow, engagement, non-shrinking, non-turning, non-satiation); kausīdya's function specifically obstructs prayoga — the second phase of "actual practice engagement." This asymmetry is doctrinally pointed: the vow can stand, but sloth bites at the moment of beginning the practice.

The Yogācāra expansion

The Cheng Weishi Lun's famous statement — 「於諸染事而策勤者,亦名懈怠,退善法故」 ("Even strenuous effort toward unwholesome ends is called sloth, because wholesome dharmas retreat") — is an important Yogācāra extension not found in Asaṅga's text. Asaṅga limits kausīdya to the nidrā-etc. trigger scenario (passive, comfort-seeking). Xuanzang extends it to active unwholesome striving: since vīrya is by definition only wholesome, any energy directed elsewhere is, structurally, kausīdya. The busy person pursuing worldly gain is, structurally, slothful toward what matters.

Cross-tradition

Both Yogācāra and Theravāda agree that kausīdya/kosajja is not independently defined: Theravāda treats it as the absence of viriya plus the partial functional manifestation of thīna-middha (the third of the five hindrances, thīna-middha nīvaraṇa). The phenomenological observation — that sleep-trigger, side-lying, and ease-attachment are the characteristic conditions of sloth — is shared (the Āhāra Sutta SN 46.51 / SA 715 confirms this cross-transmission). But the ontological verdict diverges: Yogācāra reifies kausīdya as own-substance; Theravāda treats it as derivative.

Practitioner's seam

The practitioner meets kausīdya most often in the moment when capacity exists but engagement fails — cetaso anabhyutsāha, the lack of vigor in the wholesome — distinct from the powerlessness of styāna (→#51), where capacity itself is absent. The trigger-formula nidrā-pārśva-śayana-sukha-allikā (sleep, side-lying, attachment to ease) names a specific developmental scenario: bodily comfort eroding mental energy. The classical Saṃyutta fire-simile (SA 714 / SN 46.53) gives the antidote — when the mind is dim, add fuel through investigation (擇法), vigor (精進), and joy (喜); when restless, restore quiet through tranquility (輕安), concentration (定), and equanimity (捨). The Yogācāra extension that even strenuous unwholesome activity counts as kausīdya — because vīrya is by definition only wholesome — reorients the practitioner's attention: not all activity is engagement; only activity directed toward kuśala counts as the path's vigor.

Translation

Sloth — resting in sleep, side-lying, and attachment to ease: the mind's lack of vigor in the wholesome. This is its nature. To obstruct wholesome practical engagement: this is its function.

translator's note
