意識Mind-consciousness

Mano-vijñāna · mano-viññāṇa

saṃskṛta

mano-vijñāna < manas(意,意根)+ vijñāna(識,→#1 已詳)。

Dharma
manas-kāra (作意 →#9)man + -as + √kṛ + 後綴思量之作起
māna (慢 →#33)man + -a思量我之高擡

sarvatragair viniyataiḥ kuśalaiś caitasair asau ǀ saṃprayuktā tathā kleśair upakleśais trivedanā ǁ

manovijñānasaṃbhūtiḥ sarvadāsaṃjñikād ṛte ǀ samāpattidvayān middhān mūrcchanād apy acittakāt ǁ

Skt → Pāli 之語音對應:manasmano(梵巴皆作 mano- 於合成詞中);vi-jñānavi-ññāṇa(jñ → ññ 標準對應)。

Manañca paṭicca dhamme ca uppajjati mano-viññāṇaṃ.

詞源

「意識」之梵文 mano-vijñāna 為兩段合成——manas(意/意根,< √man「思、量、念」+ -as 中性後綴)+ vijñāna(識,vi- + √jñā「知」+ -ana→#1 已詳)。

Etymology

Sanskrit mano-vijñāna compounds manas (mind, mind-faculty) with vijñāna (discriminating awareness, see →#1). The Pāli mano-viññāṇa preserves the compound through standard sound shifts.

The Indo-European etymology is one of the strongest in the entire 100-dharma catalog. Manas derives from PIE *men- "to think," yielding a rich cognate set across the major branches: Latin mēns / mentis "mind, intellect" (with derivatives mental, mention); Greek menos "spirit, will, force of thought"; English mind (< Old English gemynd < Proto-Germanic *ga-mundiz); English monument, memorial (< PIE *mnā-, related root). Sanskrit manas and English mind are direct PIE cognates — the most central cognitive term in each language family descends from the same Proto-Indo-European root *men-. The conceptual core "the cognitive faculty" is preserved across five thousand years of linguistic divergence. The Buddhist analytical lexicon's name for the sixth consciousness is therefore not exotic vocabulary requiring translation; it is, etymologically, the same word as English mind.

The √man root opens onto a three-dharma cluster within the catalog: manas (mind, this entry and the seventh consciousness →#7), manas-kāra (attention, the cetasika →#9, "the making-active of mind"), and māna (conceit, the kleśa →#33, "the elevation of self in mind"). Three classifications, three doctrinal positions — but a single PIE root threading through them. The architecture preserves at the level of vocabulary what the doctrine teaches at the level of analysis: that mind is not one thing but a structured complex, and the structure is articulated by the same root deployed differently.

A critical terminological note: in Yogācāra, manas serves double duty. As the faculty (indriya) supporting the sixth consciousness, manas refers to the seventh consciousness (the kliṣṭa-manas, ego-mind, →#7). As the consciousness itself, mano-vijñāna is the sixth. The Yogācāra innovation is precisely this distinction — Theravāda packages both functions within mano-viññāṇa alone. To read Yogācāra without understanding this terminological split is to misread the entire seven/eight-consciousness architecture.

Doctrinal frame

Mind-consciousness is the broadest in functional scope of the eight. Where the five sense-consciousnesses are confined to bare perception of their respective sense-objects, mind-consciousness penetrates all dharmas as possible object — past, future, present; conditioned and unconditioned; real, dependent-real, and shadow-only. It operates across an open three-axis matrix: three modes (wholesome / unwholesome / neutral, like the sense-consciousnesses); three measures (pratyakṣa perception, anumāna inference, and abhāva / non-veridical cognition — unique among the vijñānas); three object-types (vastu-objects, tadviṣaya dependent-real objects, and parikalpita shadow-only objects — also unique). And it is associated with the entire array of 51 mental factors — the only consciousness that can be fully populated by the whole psychological catalog (Triṃśikā 偈 9). The Abhidharma-samuccaya gives no per-識 definition; the foundational Sanskrit material lives in three Triṃśikā kārikās: 偈 8bc (the sixfold object-cognition frame), 偈 9 (the 51-cetasika association), and 偈 16 (the five-state suspension, treated below).

Two modes of operation. Mind-consciousness operates in two distinct modes that share a single underlying structure. Concomitant mind-consciousness (五俱意識) co-arises with each of the five sense-consciousnesses, travelling alongside, same-time, same-object (《解深密經》). When eye-consciousness sees red, mind-consciousness in the same moment supplies the recognition: that is a flower; it is beautiful; I want it. The two are functionally distinct but phenomenally fused — a fact this volume's #1 entry develops as the practitioner's seam of attentional training. Independent mind-consciousness (獨頭意識) operates without a sense-consciousness as companion: in dreams (夢中獨頭), in absorption (定中獨頭), in directed thought and recollection (散位獨頭), and in the rare states of internal disturbance (狂亂獨頭). It is the same consciousness in both modes; what changes is whether a sense-consciousness is its co-arising companion. The two-mode structure is what gives mind-consciousness its broad operational scope: it both supplements every act of sensory cognition and operates entirely on its own.

Investigating but not constant — the five-state suspension. Of the eight consciousnesses, only the sixth and the seventh "investigate" (審) — that is, deliberately discriminate and reach beyond bare presence. But unlike the seventh (which is constant), the sixth is not constant. Mind-consciousness is interrupted in five canonical states, named directly in Triṃśikā 偈 16: manovijñānasaṃbhūtiḥ sarvadāsaṃjñikād ṛte / samāpattidvayān middhān mūrcchanād apy acittakāt — "Mind-consciousness arises constantly except in the āsaṃjñika-state, the two attainments, deep sleep, and unconsciousness; these are 'no-mind' (acittaka)."

The five states:

  1. āsaṃjñika (無想果) — rebirth among the "unconscious deities," a realm in which the flow of consciousness is suspended for the length of a divine lifespan. Least obvious of the five and easiest to omit, but doctrinally critical.
  2. asaṃjñi-samāpatti (無想定) — the meditative attainment of "no-thought," entered deliberately by certain practitioners.
  3. nirodha-samāpatti (滅盡定, see →#76) — the meditative cessation of perception and feeling, accessible to anāgāmin and arhat practitioners.
  4. gāḍha-middha (極重睡眠) — deep sleep beyond the dreaming threshold.
  5. mūrcchanā (悶絕) — fainting, deep unconsciousness, coma.

This five-state interruption is the empirical foundation of the Yogācāra inferential argument for the seventh and eighth consciousnesses. If the sixth alone constituted the mind, what would carry life and self-sense across these gaps? The body persists through deep sleep; the person waking from a coma is still the same person; the meditator emerging from nirodha-samāpatti resumes their continuous identity. Some cognitive structure must persist across the gap — and per Yogācāra, the sixth consciousness explicitly does not. The Yogācāra answer: the seventh persists as constant ego-grasping; the eighth persists as the substrate of all storage. The five-state suspension is not a peripheral observation; it is the load-bearing wall of the eight-consciousness architecture.

Cross-tradition

Mind-consciousness is shared canon as a name (mano-viññāṇa / mano-vijñāna), with the Pāli formula manañca paṭicca dhamme ca uppajjati mano-viññāṇaṃ (SN 35, DN 22, MN 148) verbatim parallel to the Saṃyuktāgama statement that mind is "the inner sense-base, non-material, invisible, unobstructed." But the architecture differs at depth. Theravāda recognizes only six consciousnesses; manas in Theravāda denotes the introspective dimension of mano-viññāṇa itself, not a separate seventh consciousness. The Yogācāra split between sixth and seventh consciousness — between thinking-and-deciding and constant ego-grasping — is precisely the innovation that distinguishes Yogācāra's eight-consciousness model from the southern six-consciousness model.

The Theravāda alternative answer to the same question that Yogācāra resolves through 7th + 8th consciousness is bhavaṅga (有分心, "factor-of-existence"). Bhavaṅga is a stratum of mano-viññāṇa that runs continuously beneath the active stream of cognition — it persists during deep sleep, between waking moments, across the gaps where active thought ceases. It is what makes a person continuous, what carries karmic conditioning forward, what bridges the gaps that Yogācāra's manas and ālaya together bridge. Same problem, two architectural solutions: Theravāda compresses the answer into a single deeper layer of consciousness; Yogācāra distributes it across two distinct consciousnesses with separate structural functions. Neither tradition is "wrong"; they have made different systematic choices about how to model the same phenomenology. The encounter between bhavaṅga and manas/ālaya is one of the deepest cross-tradition dialogues in Buddhist psychology.

Practitioner's seam

Mind-consciousness is the principal site of training — the consciousness on which most contemplative practice directly works. Three reasons. First, mind-consciousness alone is the source of karma in the doctrinal-technical sense. The first five consciousnesses, being "without conceptual construction," do not generate ethical valence on their own; the seventh, while constant, does not directly initiate bodily or verbal action; the eighth is "neutral and unobscured," neither wholesome nor unwholesome. Only mind-consciousness can initiate wholesome or unwholesome action, and the Eight-Consciousness Verses state this directly: 「動身發語獨為最,引滿能招業力牽」 — "in initiating bodily and verbal action, [mind-consciousness] alone is supreme; through projecting and consummating karma, it bears the karmic momentum." This is why a tradition so concerned with karmic cultivation focuses its training on the sixth. Second, mind-consciousness is where conceptual labeling, evaluation, and attachment-generation occur. The training to see clearly without conceptual overlay operates by stilling mind-consciousness's elaborative tendency — the entire vipassanā tradition operates here. Third, mind-consciousness is what investigates. The investigative power that is awakening's eventual transformation — pratyavekṣaṇā-jñāna, the wisdom of wondrous investigation — is mind-consciousness in transformed form. Practice does not bypass mind-consciousness; it refines and eventually transforms it.

Mind-consciousness — the discriminating cognition arising in dependence on the mind-faculty (the seventh consciousness, →#7) and apprehending all dharmas as object. The broadest in functional scope of the eight: penetrating all three modes (wholesome / unwholesome / neutral), all three measures (perception / inference / non-veridical cognition), and all three object-types (real / dependent-real / shadow). Associated with the entire array of fifty-one mental factors — the only consciousness fully populated by the psychological catalog. The principal site of karma-generation through bodily and verbal action. Investigating but not constant: interrupted in five canonical states (rebirth among the unconscious deities, the two no-thought attainments, deep sleep, and unconsciousness — Triṃśikā 偈 16).
