真如Suchness, the Unconditioned

Tathatā · tathatā

saṃskṛta

  • 德文der / die / dasdort(那裡)、dann(那時)
  • 拉丁iste, ille(指示);ita, sīc(如此、manner-adv)
  • 梵語自身sa(彼)、(彼陰)、tat(彼中、即 tathā 之首音)

⭐⭐ 梵文 tathā 與英文 the 為直接同源——日常漢譯「真如」即「the-ness」「the abstract-noun-of being-just-so」。

kuśala-dharma-tathatā katamā / nairātmyam / sā punar ucyate śūnyatā animittaṃ bhūtakoṭiḥ paramārtho dharmadhātuś ca // ... yathā kuśala-dharma-tathatā tathā akuśala-dharma-tathatā avyākṛta-dharma-tathatā ca jñeyā //

Sktkimupādāya

pāḷi

南傳唯立 Nibbāna 為單一 asaṃkhata-dhamma(Vism XVI;《Abhidhammattha-saṅgaha》VI.34),無「真如」於勝義法(paramattha-dhamma)名單。

Theravāda

同源詞貫穿諸語:英文 the(定冠詞,最日常者)、thatthistherethenthusthough;德文 der/die/dasdort(那裡)、dann(那時);拉丁 isteille(指示)、itasīc(如此);希臘定冠詞 ὁ、ἡ、τό 與 οὕτως(如此);梵語自身之 sa(彼)、(彼陰)、tat(彼中,即 tathā 之首音)。 佛之名 tathāgata(如來)= tathā + gata(已往者,出自印歐祖語 *gʷem- 「來、行」,同源拉丁 venire)/āgata(已來者)——「如真如而往者」「如真如而來者」;佛之名即真如之名,證真如即成 tathāgata,名與證共此一根。

④Tathāgata 名號(《增支部》AN 4.24《Kāḷaka 經》「Tathāgato … tathāgato ti vuccati」)與唯識 tathatā 共印歐祖語 *so-/*to- 根、共「指 thus」之語法手勢,但唯識將其升格為 noun-as-asaṃskṛta 別立 dharma-位置;南傳保留為副詞/名號詞幹,不別立 dhamma——同一根詞,二異本體判攝。

然此非謂真如不可證——百法 100 法之終點即在證真如;證真如即成 tathāgata(→#1 眼識起,至 →#8 阿賴耶之圓滿轉依為大圓鏡智,所緣之遍滿即真如)。

英譯傳統有 SuchnessThusness 兩支:Thusness 形態上最近(thustathā-ness-tā),亦保留 the 同根之語感;Suchness 已立 Buddhist 學界之譯界慣用,但「such」之詞源(古英文 swilc < 印歐祖語 *swo-līkos)出自 *swe- 「自、本」之指示根,與 tathā 之 *so-/*to- 根不同——semantic 同而 etymology 異,與德文 Soheit(海德格爾及德語佛學界用)為同類 false-cognate-but-semantic-equivalent 模式。 收尾架構觀察:印歐祖語 *so-/*to- 之指示家族於英文給出 the / that / this / there / then / thus,於梵文給出 sa / tat / tathā / tathatā / tathāgata——同一「指 thus」之語法手勢,於兩語族之最日常處與最究竟處俱顯。

Etymology

Sanskrit tathatā compounds tathā "thus, in such a way" + -tā (feminine abstract suffix forming abstract nouns). The result is "thusness" or "suchness" — the abstract-noun-of being-just-so. Tathā itself decomposes into ta- (the demonstrative pronominal stem "this/that") + -thā (manner-adverb suffix "in such a way"). The PIE root for the demonstrative stem is *so- / *to- — one of the most stably attested Indo-European demonstrative families. The cognate set spans the family: English the (the most ordinary article in the language), that, this, there, then, thus, though; German der / die / das, dort, dann; Latin iste, ille, ita, sīc; Greek ὁ, ἡ, τό, οὕτως; Sanskrit's own sa, sā, tat. The adverbial suffix -thā derives from PIE *-tʰeh₂, paralleling Greek πῶς / οὕτως. ⭐⭐ The English definite article the and the Sanskrit tathatā are direct cognates — descended from the same PIE demonstrative gesture of pointing-at-thus. Perhaps the most striking single etymological connection in the entire 100-list: the most ordinary article in English and the most ultimate Buddhist concept share one Indo-European root and one underlying gesture. The gesture is pointing-at-thus; the article fixes a referent as "the (just-this) one"; tathatā names the abstract reality of just-this-ness as dharmatā. Both encode the same root operation: designation of that-which-is-just-so. The Buddha's title tathāgata descends from the same tathā root + either gata "gone" or āgata "come" (PIE *gʷem- "to go, come" — Latin venire). The doctrinal payoff is precise: to realize tathatā is to become tathāgata — the title and the unconditioned share a single root because they name a single relation, that of being-thus or coming-thus. English "thusness" and "suchness" are both reasonable renderings; "thusness" is morphologically closer (thustathā; -ness-tā), while "suchness" carries the established Buddhist-studies register. Asaṅga's self-referential etymology — tathatā is called tathatā because of ananyathā-bhāvatā "not-otherwise-being-ness" — closes the etymological loop: the name of suchness is itself a thus-pointing at suchness's not-being-otherwise.

Doctrinal frame

Tathatā is the sixth and final unconditioned dharma (asaṃskṛta) in the Yogācāra 100-list, and the 100th overall — the catalog's culminating term. Asaṅga's Abhidharma-samuccaya presents it with the densest single passage in the asaṃskṛta block: a 3-fold structural framing (kuśala-dharma-tathatā / akuśala-dharma-tathatā / avyākṛta-dharma-tathatā — the same suchness viewed under wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate ethical aspects of dharmas), a 7-name alternative-naming list (tathatā / nairātmya / śūnyatā / animitta / bhūtakoṭi / paramārtha / dharmadhātu), and a 6-fold kimupādāya etymology assigning each name a by-what-reason clause. The 7 names are not synonyms-by-substitution; each upādāya clause reveals a different functional or metaphysical aspect of one tathatā. The doctrinal payoff is precise: there is no single way to name the unconditioned, because no single lens captures it — tathatā names self-identity (ananyathā-bhāva); nairātmya names dissociation from self-projection (dvividha-ātma-viprayukta); śūnyatā names the non-functioning of all defilements (sarva-saṃkleśa-apracāra); animitta names the pacification of all signs (sarva-nimitta-upaśama); bhūtakoṭi names the cognitive anchor for unmistaken cognition (aviparyāsa-ālambana); paramārtha names the locus of supreme cognition (paramārtha-jñāna-gocara-sthāna); dharmadhātu names the causal ground of all noble dharmas (buddha-dharma-nimitta-āśraya). Seven aspects, one reality. The Cheng Weishi Lun fascicle 2 supplies the architectural hinge that licenses the cluster's structure: 「此五皆依真如假立,真如亦是假施設名」 — the five preceding cessations (#95–#99) are all designations dependent on tathatā, and tathatā itself is also a designation-name. Anti-realism extends top to bottom: even the unifier is not a substance-existent unifier, only a designation imputed on dharmatā. CWS supplies its own 4-fold quadruple-negation etymology (tathatā-as-existence rebuts nihilism; tathatā-as-emptiness rebuts substantialism; tathatā-as-real rebuts illusionism; tathatā-as-thus rebuts cognitive inversion) — Yogācāra's middle path between Sarvāstivāda's tathatā-as-real-eternal-substance and Madhyamaka's tathatā-as-purely-empty. Two architectural moves matter at the cluster's culmination. First, the 8-versus-6 collapse from Asg to Daśa-bhūmi-mukha (《大乘百法明門論》): Asg's three ethical-aspect tathatās (善 / 不善 / 無記) collapse into a single tathatā as the unifier of the five preceding cessations. The collapse is convenient — the unifier role is more visible at 1-fold — but loses the akuśala-dharma-tathatā anti-discrimination point. The natural luminosity of mind (prakṛti-prabhāsvara-citta) holds even within unwholesome dharmas; tathatā is not the ethical-positive-only ground. Without the 3-fold structure made explicit, students may default to thinking tathatā only "shows up" in kuśala contexts. The recovery at this entry surfaces the 3-fold framing precisely so that 1-fold reading does not flatten the doctrine. Second, the 识→智→境 (consciousness → wisdom → object) closing arc: the catalog opens at #1 cakṣur-vijñāna (eye-consciousness — the first moment of perception) and closes at #100 tathatā (the unconditioned object of mahā-ādarśa-jñāna in its full pervasiveness). The transformation that the vijñāna of #1 undergoes when its operations are completely seen is jñāna (智) — and the gocara (境) of that jñāna at full development is tathatā. The 100-list traces a single structural arc from perception's first moment to its ultimate unconditioned object; #1 → #100 is the vijñāna → jñāna → tathatā (識 → 智 → 境) arc compressed into the catalog's structure (cf. CWS fascicle 10's 4-jñāna framework, surfaced at #8 阿賴耶識 v1).

Cross-tradition

The relationship to Theravāda at this entry is the deepest categorial-architectural divergence in baifa — larger than the 28-versus-11 rūpa divergence at the 色法 cluster, larger than the 24-versus-0 不相應行 divergence at the prajñapti cluster, larger even than the 6-versus-1 unconditioned-count divergence already articulated at #95. Yogācāra has six (or Asaṅga's eight) unconditioneds with tathatā as unifier; Theravāda has one (Nibbāna alone, per Visuddhimagga XVI and Abhidhammattha-saṅgaha VI.34). Both traditions agree on the underlying anti-realist commitment — neither treats supposedly-unconditioned phenomena as substances — but they differ on whether multi-aspect articulation is a virtue or a fault at the unconditioned level. Yogācāra-pluralism-with-unifier sees value in distinguishing the un-obstructed-ness aspect (ākāśa #95) from the analytical-cessation aspect (pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha #96) from the non-arising aspect (apratisaṃkhyā-nirodha #97) and so on, with tathatā as the dharmatā on which all five aspect-namings rest. Theravāda-monism sees value in not distinguishing — the only asaṃkhata is Nibbāna; everything that looks unconditioned but is not Nibbāna is either paññatti (concept-only, e.g. ākāsa-paññatti) or a conditioned phenomenon whose stability is structural rather than ontological (e.g. dhammaṭṭhitatā is idappaccayatā — dependent co-arising's lawfulness, conditioned). The two architectures encode different choices about whether classificatory parsimony (Theravāda) or analytical articulation (Yogācāra) is the higher virtue at the doctrinal apex. Both are coherent; both encode the same anti-realism. The functional parallels can be mapped — dhammaṭṭhitatā approximates tathatā's abiding-suchness aspect (the same SN 12.20 phrasing about "whether tathāgatas arise or not, this principle stands" maps onto Asaṅga's ananyathā-bhāvatā); yathābhūta-ñāṇa-dassana approximates the paramārtha-jñāna-gocara-sthāna clause (the cognitive-anchor aspect); sabhāva approximates the dharmadhātu aspect weakly. But all four Theravāda functional analogs are conditioned; the Yogācāra category they parallel is unconditioned. The same Pāli/Sanskrit tathā root yields tathāgata in both traditions (the Buddha's epithet) — but Yogācāra uniquely promotes its abstract noun tathatā to asaṃskṛta-dharma status. Same root, opposite ontological-status verdicts. The opposite verdicts trace to the architectural commitment: where Yogācāra distributes the anti-realist work across multiple unconditioned designations with tathatā as their unifier, Theravāda concentrates it at Nibbāna alone with all else conditioned-or-concept. Reading the divergence as valid alternative architectures for the same anti-realist insight — not as one side getting it right and the other side getting it wrong — is the cluster's closing pedagogical lesson.

Practitioner's seam

Tathatā is the catalog's most dangerous misidentification target precisely because it is the easiest to name and the hardest to recognize. The expansiveness of a settled meditation, the clarity of a moment of vipassanā, the felt absence of grasping during deep samādhi — each can be misread as tathatā-realization, but each is a phenomenology, a state of the conditioned mind, not the unconditioned suchness on which all states (open and clamorous, sublime and afflicted) rest. The practical anchor against this misreading is precisely Asaṅga's 3-fold structural framing. Akuśala-dharma-tathatā — the suchness of unwholesome dharmas — survives the 1-fold collapse only if a reader knows to look for it. Tathatā is just-as present in a moment of kāmacchanda (sense-desire) as in a moment of upekṣā (equanimity), because tathatā is what the moment is under the dharmatā lens, not what the moment feels like under the experiential lens. The 修行 implication: realizing tathatā is not arriving at a special expansive state but recognizing the just-as character of every state, including the afflicted ones; the prakṛti-prabhāsvara-citta doctrine (mind's natural luminosity) does not say afflictions are absent from a Buddha's mind-stream — it says afflictions, when they arise, do so against an underlying suchness that they cannot defile. Tathatā on the cushion is not the smoothness of practice; it is the underlying that-which-is-thus of practice's roughness as much as its smoothness. The CWS 卷九 verse 「此諸法勝義,亦即是真如,常如其性故,即唯識實性」 packs this entire pedagogy into seven characters: the ultimate of all dharmas is just suchness, because it abides as it is, hence it is the very-real-nature of consciousness-only. The "abides as it is" clause (常如其性故) is the protection — tathatā does not vary across conditioned moments; it is what they all share at the level of dharmatā. The catalog's 100-entry journey ends here because nothing more can be said: every other dharma in the 99 preceding entries names a feature of conditioned experience or a designation upon it; tathatā names what every conditioned experience is, when seen as dharmatā. The 識 → 智 → 境 arc closes when the vijñāna of #1 — the first moment of eye-consciousness, condition-grasping at form — is seen completely, transformed into jñāna, and finds tathatā as its full-pervasive object. To realize tathatā is to become tathāgata; the title and the realization are one root, tathā-pointing-at-thus.

Translation

Suchness, the Unconditioned (tathatā) — that-which-is-thus, the dharmatā of all dharmas in all positions and in all times. Neither born nor perishing, neither defiled nor purified, neither increasing nor decreasing; abiding as it is, the very-real-nature of consciousness-only (vijñapti-mātratā). One reality with seven upādāya-names — self-identity, no-selfness, emptiness, signlessness, reality-anchor, ultimate, dharma-realm — each a different lens on the same unconditioned. The unifier of the five preceding designations (#95–#99); designation itself, not substance; the closing term of the 100-list. To realize this is to become tathāgata: title and realization, one root.
