Ghānañca paṭicca gandhe ca uppajjati ghāna-viññāṇaṃ.

《大乘阿毘達磨雜集論》(T31n1606_p0696b13)展開六種香

《大乘五蘊論》(T31n1612_p0848b19–20)最簡形式:

gandha-viṣaya < gandha(香、氣味)+ viṣaya(境;詳 #65)。

⭐⭐ synchronic Sanskrit word-familygandha(香)/ gandhin(有氣味者)/ ⭐ gandharva乾闥婆,「食香神」——天樂神、中陰身食香說)/ sugandha(妙香)/ durgandha(惡臭)/ gandhāra(犍陀羅,地名「香之地」?)。

gandhaḥ katamaḥ / catvāri mahābhūtānyupādāya ghrāṇendriya-grāhyo 'rthaḥ / yathā surabhir asurabhiḥ samagandhaḥ sahajagandhaḥ sāṃyogikagandhaḥ pāriṇāmikagandhaśca //

按:5 境樣板 instantiated(Y = ghrāṇa)。

Etymology

Sanskrit gandha-viṣaya compounds gandha ("odor, scent, fragrance") and viṣaya (see #65). Gandha has no securely established Indo-European etymology: the postulated √gandh ("to smell") is a denominative back-formation from the noun, not an attested primary verbal root, and the term has no robust IE cognate set outside Indo-Iranian. The pre-Aryan substrate hypothesis (parallel to rūpa at #65) is the stronger scholarly position. Pāli gandha is identical in spelling and pronunciation to the Sanskrit (no sound change at all) — a rare Skt-Pāli identity case shared with kāya at #64. Within Sanskrit itself the word generates a robust synchronic family: gandha (odor), gandhin (one with odor), sugandha (fragrant), durgandha (foul-smelling), and most doctrinally significant gandharva — the "scent-eater" celestial musician, who in Buddhist abhidharmic tradition also names the intermediate-state being (antarābhava) thought to subsist on smell rather than gross food. The doctrinal weight of the gandh-root extends well beyond the simple sense-perception domain. (False-cognate alert: English fragrance, fragrant < Latin fragrāre < PIE *bʰreh₁g- "to break, exhale" — not cognate with Skt gandha or ghrāṇa; the surface phonetic similarity is misleading and modern Indo-European linguistics rejects the connection. Same issue arose at #62 ghrāṇa-indriya.) English odor < Latin odor < PIE *h₃ed- "to smell" (cf. Greek ὄζω) — also independent of Sanskrit.

Doctrinal frame

The smell-domain in Yogācāra is the third of the five viṣayas and elaborates along two axes yielding six sub-types (per 《大乘阿毘達磨雜集論》): a qualitative axis (surabhi pleasant, asurabhi unpleasant, sama neutral) and an origin axis (sahaja "co-arisen, native" smells like sandalwood whose fragrance is intrinsic to the substance; sāṃyogika "compound, mixed" smells from blends and combinations; pāriṇāmika "transformative" smells from ripening or chemical change, like fruit). The 《大乘阿毘達磨雜集論》 metacommentary glosses the basis for the six-fold division as 「三因建立」 ("three causes for the establishment"): lakṣaṇa (phenomenal mark — what the smell IS), hāni-vṛddhi (loss-and-gain affective valence — pleasant/unpleasant), and viśeṣa (taxonomic difference — what makes one smell different from another). Among the five viṣayas, smell occupies a mid-level position in the abhidharmic hierarchy of internal complexity: less elaborated than form (25 sub-types) or sound (11 sub-types), more elaborated than taste (six) or touch (twenty-two — the latter elaborated through different mechanisms involving mahābhūta primary qualities). The relative simplicity of the smell-domain's structure may reflect its phenomenological character: smell does not bear doctrinal content (sounds carry teaching), does not have spatial-luminal articulation (form does), and does not have the immediate karmic-bodily entanglement (touch and taste do). Smell is comparatively pure "affect" — pleasant or unpleasant in its native register, categorizable by origin, but not the medium of complex semantic or proprioceptive content.

Cross-tradition

Gandha-viṣayagandha-ārammaṇa: top-level identity, including the rare phonological identity (gandha = gandha, no sound change). The qualitative axis (Skt surabhi/asurabhi/sama ↔ Pāli iṭṭha/aniṭṭha/majjhima) is fully shared. The origin axis (sahaja/sāṃyogika/pāriṇāmika) is Yogācāra-distinctive: Theravāda's standard analysis does not provide a parallel three-fold origin distinction for smells (its rūpa-classification operates on different organizing principles, and smell is not given comparable internal articulation). The pattern is consistent with the broader N-S divergence first registered at #65 (form-domain): Yogācāra elaborates the inner architecture of fewer dharma-types; Theravāda atomistically lists more dharma-types with simpler internal sub-structure. Smell-domain's case is structurally mild — Yogācāra adds three sub-types beyond what Theravāda explicitly enumerates, but the canonical formula and the affective-classification are fully shared. The Pāli sutta formula ghānañca paṭicca gandhe ca uppajjati ghāna-viññāṇaṃ is canonical (DN 22, SN 35.93, parallels), and the Sanskrit canonical parallel via SA 273's "如是" extension is fully shared inheritance.

Practitioner's seam

The smell-domain has narrower contemplative engagement than form, sound, or body in the canonical practice traditions, but the engagement that does exist works at a phenomenologically distinctive seam. First, smell as direct anicca-observation: smell, like sound (#66), is structurally ephemeral — odor arises, peaks, dissipates with characteristic temporal arc, and unlike sustained visual fields or tactile contact, an odor cannot be held for examination. Practitioners attending to smell in the satipaṭṭhāna register quickly experience the dharma's claim that "all formations are impermanent" not as proposition but as the very texture of the smell-experience itself. Second, the Śūraṅgama-sūtra's Xiāng-yán-tóng-zǐ yuán-tōng (#67 [大乘]) develops a particularly precise dependent-arising contemplation through smell: observing the sandalwood incense's fragrance, the practitioner asks where it comes from — not from the wood (since unburnt wood is not fragrant), not from empty space (which is permanent while fragrance is intermittent), not from smoke (which is a separate phenomenon), not from fire (which has no inherent fragrance). The four-fold negation (fēi mù fēi kōng, fēi yān fēi huǒ, 非木非空,非煙非火) is a structural performance of pratītyasamutpāda's claim that no individual phenomenon contains the full causal explanation of any other — fragrance arises from a causal nexus none of whose components, taken individually, suffices to produce it. The practitioner who follows this contemplation through to its conclusion experiences the smell dissolving along with the conceptual reification of "where smells come from": 「意銷,發明無漏」 (consciousness's grasping disengages; the unconditioned manifests). The move is precise and rare: most contemplative traditions use form or breath; the smell-faculty's yuán-tōng is a comparatively specialized and phenomenologically refined practice. Third, smell as karmic indicator: the abhidharmic tradition has subsidiary teachings about smell as marker of karmic state (the various scents associated with different rebirth-realms, the fragrance phenomena reported around accomplished practitioners). These extend smell-faculty contemplation into the broader Buddhist cosmological framework but lie outside the standard 100-dharma classification. ⚠️ Provenance caveat per #60 譯者按.

Translation

Smell-domain (gandha-viṣaya) — the olfactory field cognized by nose-consciousness, classified along two axes: qualitative (pleasant, unpleasant, neutral) and origin (native — intrinsic to the substance like sandalwood; compound — from blending; transformative — from ripening or chemical change); six sub-types in 《大乘阿毘達磨雜集論》. An aspect-portion of consciousness; mid-level in the elaboration-hierarchy of the five sense-objects; the contemplative anchor of the Śūraṅgama Xiāng-yán-tóng-zǐ yuán-tōng's four-fold negation contemplation on the dependent arising of fragrance.
