Sotañca paṭicca sadde ca uppajjati sota-viññāṇaṃ.

《大乘阿毘達磨雜集論》(T31n1606_p0696b01–04)展開十一種聲

《大乘五蘊論》(T31n1612_p0848b17–19)為入門最簡形式:

śabda-viṣaya < śabda(聲、音)+ viṣaya(境;詳 #65)。

Pāli sadda < śabda:śabd → sadd(清音叢→濁音叢之簡化 + assimilation;標準巴利化)。

Etymology

Sanskrit śabda-viṣaya compounds śabda ("sound, articulate utterance, word-sound") and viṣaya ("domain, sphere of cognition," see #65). Śabda has no securely established Indo-European etymology: the proposed PIE *swep- root (which actually means "to sleep," yielding Latin sopor) is unrelated to sound — a misattribution; *ḱweb- as cited in some sources appears to be a fabricated or misremembered root absent from major IE etymological dictionaries. The onomatopoeic hypothesis — that śabda is a sound-imitative coinage internal to Sanskrit or borrowed from a pre-Aryan substrate — is the working default in comparative linguistics, but no formal cognate chain can be established. (False-cognate alert: English sound derives from Latin sonus < PIE *swon-ossonos root, not śabda root; English voice < Latin vox < PIE *wek̑-, also independent.) Pāli sadda derives from śabda by standard cluster simplification (śabd → sadd: cluster reduction with assimilation). What gives śabda its weight, however, is not its etymology but its cultural-philosophical position in Indian thought: the vyākaraṇa (grammarian) school from Pāṇini onward treats śabda as ontologically primary, and Bhartṛhari's Vākyapadīya systematically develops śabda-brahman ("Sound-as-Ultimate"), the doctrine that the cosmos is fundamentally articulate utterance. Buddhism takes śabda in its narrow technical sense (the auditory object grasped by the ear-faculty) and avoids the ontological commitment, but operates in a linguistic environment where śabda already carries this metaphysical weight. The Śūraṅgama yuán-tōng's framing of "wondrous-sound subtly perfect" (miào-yīn mì-yuán, 妙音密圓) — sound as something whose phenomenal arising and ceasing does not exhaust its dharmic nature — operates in a register that the surrounding Indian-thought-world had been building for centuries.

Doctrinal frame

The sound-domain in Yogācāra is the second of the five viṣayas and structurally elaborates along three axes yielding eleven sub-types (per T1606): an affective axis (manojña pleasant / amanojña unpleasant / ubhaya-viparīta neutral), an origin axis (sounds caused by upātta-mahābhūta "appropriated elements" — sentient utterance; anupātta-mahābhūta "unappropriated elements" — natural sound; tadubhaya "both"), and an epistemic axis (loka-prasiddha commonly-known; siddha-upanīta derived-from-attainment; parikalpita conceptually-fabricated; āryair-deśita taught-by-noble-ones; tīrthikair-deśita taught-by-non-Buddhist-teachers). The third axis is the doctrinally striking one. The first two — affective and origin — are essentially shared with Theravāda's standard sound-classification and represent the abhidharmic substrate. The epistemic axis is Yogācāra-distinctive and lifts sound from "audio phenomenon" to "truth-bearing medium". By making "sound taught by noble ones" vs "sound taught by non-Buddhist teachers" a sub-classification of śabda-viṣaya itself, Asaṅga is encoding into the abhidharma the structural fact that sound is the medium through which dharmic content is transmitted. The ear-faculty (#61) had this concern in its etymology (śruśrāvakaśruta); the sound-object's classification carries it forward into the dharmic taxonomy. Two architectural points stand out: (1) Vasubandhu's earlier Pañcaskandhaka (《大乘五蘊論》) gives only the three-fold origin axis — the eleven-fold expansion is post-conversion Yogācāra elaboration. (2) Sound's content-bearing capacity puts it in a different structural position from the other four viṣayas — light, smell, taste, touch do not naturally bear doctrinal content the way utterance does. Yogācāra's classification registers this asymmetry.

Cross-tradition

The top-level identification śabda-viṣayasadda-ārammaṇa is direct correspondence: same name (Skt śabda, Pāli sadda, with rule-governed cluster simplification), same structural position (second of four / five viṣayas), same definition (clarified-matter-derived domain grasped by the ear-faculty). Within sub-classification, however, the two traditions diverge architecturally. Theravāda's standard analysis gives a three-fold affective division (iṭṭha / aniṭṭha / majjhima) directly parallel to Asg's manojña / amanojña / ubhaya-viparīta, and a two-fold or three-fold origin division. Theravāda does not have the epistemic axis, and does not have vacī-viññatti (verbal intimation) as a sub-category of sadda — Theravāda separates vacī-viññatti as an independent rūpa outside the viṣaya group (parallel to its treatment of kāya-viññatti at #65). The divergence pattern is consistent: Yogācāra collects more material under fewer dharma-types with internal structuring; Theravāda separates more dharma-types with atomistic treatment. The epistemic axis is genuinely Yogācāra-distinctive and reflects the philosophical school's particular attention to the sound-domain as transmission-medium for dharmic content. As at #65, this is not ontological disagreement (both schools recognize all the relevant phenomena) but classificatory architecture. The Pāli canonical formula sotañca paṭicca sadde ca uppajjati sota-viññāṇaṃ in DN 22, SN 35.93, and parallels — and the Sanskrit canonical parallel in SA 273 — represent shared sutra-level inheritance; the abhidharmic elaboration is sectarian.

Practitioner's seam

The sound-domain has two contemplative functions in Buddhist practice. First, sound as object of immediate observation: the canonical Saḷāyatana-saṃyutta instructions on sense-restraint and the satipaṭṭhāna noting practice ("hearing, hearing") at the auditory gate work at this level — the practitioner observes sound's arising-and-ceasing as the most ephemeral of the five sense-domains. Sound, more than any other viṣaya, comes-and-goes-while-you-watch-it; its momentary character makes it the natural object for impermanence-observation. Second, sound as transmission-medium for dharmic content: the three-fold wisdom (śravaṇa-cintā-bhāvanā, hearing-reflection-cultivation) names this register, and the entire oral-transmission architecture of Buddhism is hooked into it (cf. #61). The Śūraṅgama yuán-tōng's placement of Kauṇḍinya's sound-yuán-tōng as the first of the twenty-five entry-points is doctrinally weighty: it positions the historical inception-event of the dharma — the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath, where Kauṇḍinya was the first to "understand" (ājñāta, hence his epithet Aññā-Koṇḍañña) — as the structural prototype of dharmic reception itself. Every Buddhist who has heard a teaching and understood it is, structurally, repeating Kauṇḍinya's reception. The sound-domain is not a neutral arena where dharma happens to travel; the sound-domain is the modality through which dharma reaches the practitioner. Concentration practices that attend to sound (nāda-anusandhāna, the Tibetan dbyangs sgra, the East Asian shēng-chén recitation traditions) work directly in this register. The phrase "wondrous-sound subtly perfect" (妙音密圓) names a practitioner-experience: at deep concentration, sound is no longer encountered as discrete event-and-cessation but as a continuous dharmic field-quality of the cognitive moment — a recognition that the early sutra evaṃ me sutaṃ formula performs as ritual opening. ⚠️ Provenance caveat per #60 譯者按.

Translation

Sound-domain (śabda-viṣaya) — the auditory field cognized by ear-consciousness, organized along three axes: affective (pleasant, unpleasant, neutral), origin (sentient-uttered, natural, both), and epistemic (commonly-known, attainment-derived, conceptually-fabricated, taught by noble ones, taught by non-Buddhist teachers); eleven sub-types in 《大乘阿毘達磨雜集論》. An aspect-portion of consciousness; the medium through which dharmic content is transmitted; second of the five sense-objects; the entry-point ranked first among the twenty-five yuán-tōng in the Śūraṅgama-sūtra's classification of paths to penetration.
