The Mohe Zhiguan (Great Calming-and-Contemplation) does not conceal its break when it opens: the summer of teaching at Yuquan reached only the Object of Views; the later portion was not expounded.

Yet Guanding does not rush to fill the blank with a story. He follows the stream to its source and the fragrance to its root, tracing the transmission from the Buddha through Nāgārjuna, Huiwen, Nanyue, and Zhiyi. A Dharma lineage is not a string of names used to create grandeur. It answers whether someone has personally walked the present Dharma and whether it can keep becoming a way to benefit sentient beings in one generation after another.

The calming-and-contemplation transmitted does not have only one outward form. Some must ascend as if by stairs, entering the true mark gradually through discipline, concentration, and wisdom. Some must exchange earlier and later practices according to their capacities. Some take the true mark directly as their condition from the outset and see emptiness, provisionality, and the Middle together in a single object. The gradual, indeterminate, and perfect-and-sudden differ in their modes of practice, but they do not face three destinations. Three gates lead to the one true mark.

The real difficulty therefore lies not in whether the book lacks its ending, but in whether readers make the path already spoken their own practice. Written words can bind and can liberate. Clinging to the text grows a harmful excrescence; penetrating it lets a single text open every understanding. When the moon is behind the mountain, first use a round fan to point toward it. When the wind is formless, first know it through the movement of trees. The gate is not the destination, yet those who have not seen cannot treat the entrance lightly.

The first thing this unfinished book teaches is therefore an honesty that neither adds nor subtracts: walk every step of what was spoken; invent not one word on behalf of what was not. When that boundary is kept, Origins is already teaching calming-and-contemplation.

Seeking fame, heavenly merit, power, intelligence, meditative pleasure, or even only one’s own escape from birth and death can all look like movement “upward.” Zhiyi questions each in turn: Does this mind possess great compassion? Does it seek the liberation of sentient beings, or only a more refined and dignified self?

Arousing the great mind does not mean making a vow sound grand. The Four Truths first give it a real object: see how suffering arises, origination gathers, the path opens, and cessation becomes possible; then see these four deepen through arising-and-ceasing, non-arising, the immeasurable, and the unconstructed. Without an object, a vow is merely ardor. Without suffering present before it, great compassion easily remains imaginary.

The Four Vast Vows press understanding into a vow that cannot retreat. Seeing impermanence, one no longer loses oneself in the burning house. Knowing all dharmas as empty, one liberates without manufacturing a graspable rescuer and rescued. Seeing that sentient beings’ illnesses are immeasurable, one vows to open immeasurable Dharma gates. Knowing one thought as emptiness, provisionality, and the Middle, one understands that ignorance turns into luminosity as ice melts into water; no separate awakening is carried in from afar.

Last, the Six Identities are still required. To say “I have nothing to do with the Buddha” produces retreat and timidity; to say “I am already the Buddha” produces overweening pride. Identity in principle prevents denial of what is originally present; identity in name, contemplative practice, resemblance, partial realization, and the ultimate prevent skipping actual cultivation. A treasure already beneath one’s house is not yet being used. After someone points it out, weeds must be cleared, earth dug, the treasury opened, and finally all its riches taken out.

The genuine great mind therefore contains three things at once: the Four Truths are its object, the Four Vast Vows the vows it can arouse, and the Six Identities the stages it traverses step by step. Today’s single thought is neither dismissed nor passed off as the endpoint. It is asked one clear question: are you willing to begin from this step and no longer walk only for yourself?

心要Heart-Essence

Constantly sitting for ninety days leaves the body almost no escape, forcing it to face the Dharma realm in one thought. Constantly walking for ninety days binds every step, voice, and thought to the Buddha. Half walking and half sitting uses worship, circumambulation, scripture recitation, repentance, and contemplation to keep phenomenal practice from leaving the true mark. Neither walking nor sitting extends the practice site into seeing, hearing, awareness, knowing, walking, standing, sitting, and lying down—even into every wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate thought.

Four bodily forms regulate the same mind. Calming does not mean refusing to move, and contemplation does not mean thinking more. Samādhi means that mind does not scatter among the objects it traverses and simultaneously illuminates their lack of fixed intrinsic nature. Sitting in torpor, walking in distraction, clinging to ritual forms during repentance, or forgetting contemplation in daily life can all leave only an outer shell.

Because the fourth gate includes unwholesome objects, it must especially be read with the warning against abuse. Affliction resembles a strong fish and calming-and-contemplation the hook and bait. The hook must follow the fish in order to see desire and anger before they arise, as they are about to arise, while they arise, and after they have arisen. Following the fish is not feeding it. Without investigation through the four phases, precepts, and discernment of faculties, “evil can be an object of contemplation” becomes only the creation of evil in obedience to desire.

The treatise therefore gives no separate, fervent encouragement for following one’s own intention. It instead devotes its longest passage to warning against abuse. An ugly woman imitating Xishi’s frown only becomes uglier; a mad dog chasing thunder gains nothing; when a good ford lies open, there is no reason to drive cattle into a dangerous crossing where scarcely one in a hundred survives. When skillful means leaves wisdom, the closer the imitation looks, the farther it may move from the path.

Nor are the four kinds of samādhi four identities from which one must choose. Illnesses of mind are immeasurable and Dharma gates resemble the many medicines of a physician. At different times, even one person may need to walk, sit, counteract, or enter the principle. Following one’s own intention means cultivating contemplation the moment mentation arises. The four samādhis must themselves be adjusted according to person and time; it does not mean obeying the moment desire arises.

Cultivating the great practice therefore has one common floor: after arousing the mind, put body, speech, and mind actually upon the road; when an object appears, do not leave calming-and-contemplation; when affliction appears, illuminate it more exactly instead of giving it wider license; and from hearing through reflection into actual cultivation, never stop.

心要Heart-Essence

When cultivation bears fruit, clarity, stability, and even genuine evidence of realization may appear immediately. These are not false. Yet the Mohe Zhiguan’s teaching of calming-and-contemplation reminds us that a result attained now is not necessarily the fruition meant here.

Cultivation is called “habituated practice” and “habituated cause”; realization is called “arising attainment” and “habituated result.” This cause and result can both be obtained in the present life. Realm-retribution lies across a future life. Both contain the word “result,” but their times and referents differ: what is realized today does not mean that everything to be received in a future life has already appeared.

What relation, then, does future fruition have to today? Practice that opposes the Middle Way brings forth fruition at the two extremes; practice that accords with it brings forth excellent and wondrous fruition. Fruition is not a sudden reward or punishment descending from nowhere. It reveals the direction of present practice.

The Fragrant City’s seven walls and picture-like bridges and fords flash only once in the passage. The image shows that even anticipatory result already differs—how much more true fruition. The author immediately points onward and does not fill what remains unexplained with imagination.

The real question today is therefore not “What object have I already attained?” but “In what direction am I practicing?” Evidence of realization should be cherished but cannot impersonate the endpoint. A future life has not appeared, but neither is it unrelated to this moment. Every act that accords with the Middle Way is already answering what one will bring forth.

Scriptures and treatises are meant to open people’s eyes, yet they can also become a net in the mind: cling to one work and doubt another; decide one teaching is right and hurry to condemn the rest as wrong. The more books one reads, the tighter the net may become.

Zhiyi’s entrance is not another dispute, but skillfully using calming-and-contemplation to contemplate mind. Once inner wisdom becomes clear, gradual and sudden teachings cease to be mutually exclusive labels. It resembles breaking open a mote and bringing forth the great trichiliocosm scripture scroll within it. One seemingly tiny mind becomes the place where Buddha-Dharmas as numerous as the Ganges sands are understood.

But tearing the net does not stop at personal understanding. To benefit sentient beings outwardly, one must teach according to what each can receive. One may teach as a Dharma king or manifest various images in the ten Dharma realms; one may answer a question or first ask the Buddha so that his answer turns the Dharma wheel. Different identities and exchanges all let Dharma appear before a corresponding capacity.

True penetration does not mean finally finding one book with which to crush all other scriptures and treatises. It means that after one’s own knots of doubt loosen, one can also find entrances into Buddha-Dharma for different people. From inner wisdom to outward benefit, from breaking the mote and bringing forth the scroll to giving rise to teaching according to capacity—this is tearing open the great net.

心要Heart-Essence

The most dangerous moment in reading a profound treatise is not always failure to understand. It may be understanding one sentence and sealing that single sentence into the whole. Glue on the hand sticks to whatever it touches. A person talks in a dream and becomes harder to awaken the more they speak. People compete to seize rubble, each declaring that they have found a beryl jewel. Returning to the Great Abode first asks not how much you remember, but whether the words have brought you to where they truly tend.

Water flows toward the ocean; flame rises toward space. A teaching text also has a direction. Reaching meaning through the text does not mean abandoning words to chase a mysterious answer. It means seeing within each sentence how the teaching brings oneself and sentient beings together toward Dharma body, prajñā, and liberation. Enter the three virtues oneself, and cause others to enter them as well. Self-benefit alone or words alone have not yet completed the road.

Nor are the three virtues three entities external to one another. Wisdom and freedom are present within body; Dharma body and liberation are not absent from wisdom; and liberation does not leave body or wisdom behind. To speak of three prevents their functions from being erased. To speak of not-three prevents any virtue from becoming isolated. To speak of one means that they enter the secret treasury together. To speak of not-one means that all three functions remain clearly present.

Even ignorance, grasping marks, and non-knowing cannot be pushed outside the three virtues. Obstruction must be treated and virtue disclosed, so there is a path from arousing the mind to the ultimate. Yet obstruction does not depart from virtue, and virtue does not depart from obstruction, so the three virtues are not new objects brought in from afar. Luminosity is not brought in from beyond ignorance. The road truly must be walked, yet the virtue it discloses is not sought somewhere outside obstruction.

At the end, the Middle, true mark, Dharma body, omniscience of all aspects, and great nirvāṇa are all only names provisionally established. Zhiyi therefore leaves three questions: What is purport and return? Where does purport and return go? Who is the one who purports and returns? Seize an immediate answer, and the glue remains on the hand. When the path of words ceases, thought no longer pursues, and all is forever quiescent like space, the place of return is no longer distant.

釋名Explaining the Name

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

Speak of “calming,” and it is easy to imagine pressing thoughts down. Speak of “contemplation,” and it is easy to imagine forceful analysis. Zhiyi first opens the two graphs. Calming has three meanings: cessation, staying, and calming spoken in relation to non-calming. Contemplation has three: penetrating, contemplative comprehension, and contemplation spoken in relation to non-contemplation. Evil thoughts coming to rest is cessation. Mind abiding in principle is staying. In relation to the non-calming of ignorance, Dharma-nature is called calming. Wisdom piercing through affliction is penetrating. Contemplative wisdom entering suchness is contemplative comprehension. In relation to the non-contemplation of ignorance, Dharma-nature is called contemplation. Each name first points toward a real transformation.

Yet as long as one asks whether calming comes from what is broken or from that which calms, the name still seeks roots among agent and object, self and other. Zhiyi therefore horizontally breaks the four propositions and vertically breaks every successive calming-and-contemplation that still depends upon something. He does not establish one highest calming to overpower the remaining calmings or one deepest contemplation to exclude the rest. Agent and object of dependence are quiescently extinguished together, and even calming and contemplation themselves cannot be attained. When fire burns wood, the fire has nowhere to lodge once the wood is exhausted. The absolute is absolute precisely because it leaves not even “absolute” behind for someone to grasp.

Names cannot be attained, yet they can still be taught through causes and conditions. To let sentient beings understand the language of different scriptures and treatises, different names are integrated. To enable practitioners to give rise to benefit, calming-and-contemplation is taught as communicating with the three virtues. To counteract affliction, the relative is taught. To disclose the ultimate truth, the absolute is taught. Detachment, non-abiding, quiescent extinction, meditative concentration, discarding, and relinquishing can all be different names for calming. Knowledge and vision, bright discernment, wisdom, illumination and comprehension, and reflecting and penetrating can all be different names for contemplation. Although modes of teaching are many, they do not create many mutually isolated Dharmas.

Nor are calming and contemplation two tools awkwardly joined into the three virtues only at the end. Calming can communicate with liberation, contemplation with prajñā, and their equality and relinquishing of the two extremes with Dharma body. Contemplation is already present in calming, and calming in contemplation. Calming-and-contemplation communicates together with the three virtues, and each of the three virtues communicates with calming-and-contemplation in turn. They are neither arranged before and after in a vertical line nor separated horizontally. Like the three dots of the true graph yi, the one itself is three and the three themselves are one, neither merged into one dot nor dispersed into three unrelated Dharmas.

Explaining the Name therefore does not add definitions to two graphs. It teaches how to use names without being trapped by them. Beginners need not abandon themselves because the absolute is a sage’s realm, nor may they pass off understanding “unattainable” as realization. Viewed through the six identities, the beginner is not excluded and sagehood is not falsely claimed. To cease one portion of evil thought and illuminate one portion of delusion today provides an entrance. Step by step, go deeper without grasping any step as ultimate. Here the name calming-and-contemplation completes its work: it brings a person to the gate, until the practitioner sees directly that neither gate nor traveler has anywhere to abide.

體相Essence and Characteristics

心要Heart-Essence

A blind person asks what color milk is. One person says it resembles a shell; others say rice flour, snow, or a white crane. All four answers point toward white, but none is the color of milk itself. If blind people each seize one simile and argue until their faces redden, what they contend over remains only a simile.

Zhiyi uses this story to ask us: when we hear existence, emptiness, both existence and emptiness, or neither existence nor emptiness, do we likewise take one gate for the whole true mark? Teaching can differ according to sentient understanding, understanding and wisdom, or wisdom. The same teaching can also give delight, give rise to goodness, break evil, or lead into the ultimate truth. Many voices do not mean truth has shattered into many pieces. Precisely because sentient beings’ eye diseases differ, medicine cannot have only one flavor.

Where, then, is the essence of calming-and-contemplation? The treatise does not let one memorize a single definition. Through teaching characteristics it asks which road one travels; through eye and wisdom whether one can truly see and know; through objects what one illuminates; and finally through gain and loss whether, the moment one speaks, one has already grasped self, other, both, or no cause.

Nor does the perfect and sudden erase three into one. It resembles one face with three eyes: the eyes do not split the face, and the face does not deprive the eyes of their functions. It also resembles eye, sunlight, and form: without any one of them, seeing cannot occur. Calming, contemplation, and object do not stand in line at three moments. One contains three, and three do not depart from one.

Real loss is not failing to learn one more name or characteristic. It is seizing an explanation, then immediately producing dependence, right and wrong, love and anger, and contention, until body, speech, and mind push oneself back into the ocean of suffering. Nor is real gain henceforth closing one’s mouth. It first breaks the four kinds of grasping at nature, then teaches four through skillful means according to sentient beings’ conditions. The inexpressible and skillful expression need not cancel one another.

The final test left by Essence and Characteristics is therefore direct: Can one remain unmoved in the ultimate truth and still skillfully distinguish every Dharma? Can one remain personally unbound by views and still use different Dharma gates to help different people? If one remains busy proving that the shell, snow, or white crane held in one’s hand alone is the color of milk, the eyes have not yet opened.

心要Heart-Essence

The Buddha-Dharma has so many names: principle, delusion, wisdom, practice, station, and teaching, along with countless samādhis, factors of the path, and scriptures. Can it really be enough to say only “calming-and-contemplation”?

Zhiyi first gives two similes. Calming is like cauterizing an illness and finding the point: once the point is accurate, every ailment can be removed. Contemplation is like obtaining the jewel king: with this one jewel in hand, all treasures follow. The key is not how many names there are, but whether one has found the root that makes mind quiescent and principle clear.

A complete road then appears. The nature of principle constantly abides. Confusion about principle gives rise to delusion; accord with principle gives rise to wisdom; understanding is implemented as practice; practice realizes stations; and, when stations are fulfilled, one turns to teach others. From principle to delusion, from delusion to wisdom, from wisdom to practice, and onward to stations and teaching, not one step leaves calming-and-contemplation.

Yet embracing the Dharmas is not merely arranging six items in a row. At the end, the treatise says that one principle can embrace the other five Dharmas, and that one delusion, one wisdom, one practice, one station, and one teaching each likewise embraces the whole. For if principle had nothing to do with confusion and awakening, it would be an empty name. If wisdom could not become practice, it would never arrive anywhere. If a station could not transform others, realization would stop with oneself.

Calming-and-contemplation is therefore not a box into which all Dharmas are stuffed. It is more like the quiescence and illumination within every Dharma. Delusion must be illuminated and must also cease. Practice needs the eyes of contemplation and the steady feet of calming. One speaks of stations without grasping them, and of emptiness without destroying cause and result. Teaching unfolds from mind and returns to illuminate mind.

Names can be few, but no step on the road can be omitted. Truly embracing the Dharmas does not mean memorizing that “everything is in calming-and-contemplation.” It means asking within this very Dharma before me: have I seen it clearly, and have I actually brought to rest the mind that keeps it turning?

Partial and Perfect

The moon is already bright, but it is not yet full. Zhiyi uses this simplest of similes to dismantle one of practice’s least visible misrecognitions: advancing toward completeness is not the same as already being complete. Nor does relying on a Mahāyāna Dharma gate mean that one’s present understanding, practice, and realization are all perfect.

Partial and perfect are therefore more than labels of higher and lower. Great and small ask whether one still has to dismantle real Dharmas to see emptiness, or sees that they exist through conditions and are empty in their very essence. Analyzing Dharmas resembles seeing empty space only after dismantling a pillar; embodying Dharmas resembles the pillar-image in a mirror, never an actual pillar and empty without waiting for extinction. Yet even if one understands essential emptiness, grasping one’s own gate and disparaging others only replaces the old chain with a new golden one.

Gradual and sudden are not simply slow and fast. Some know the Middle Way from the beginning but must still travel through skillful means; others directly condition perfect principle from teaching and contemplation through practice and realization. More importantly, an earlier gradual practice can become the gradual within the sudden after opening and convergence, but one cannot reverse the sequence and say: because it could enter later, it was already ultimate before. Being able to arrive is not having arrived.

Poison placed in milk opens another side. The direct cause is like a constituent never lost from milk; the Dharma heard is like poison that follows milk as it becomes curds, cream, and ghee and acts at different times. Some awaken through principle, some by hearing teaching, some through reflection and cultivation, and some at a station of realization. Entry into the perfect has no single moment shared by everyone; arousal does not mean that the entire later road has already been traveled.

Provisional Dharma is therefore not a detour to despise. The Buddha establishes three provisionals because sentient beings differ in faculties, desires, wholesome roots, and illnesses. Opening the provisional does not carry reality in from outside skillful means; it opens the direction in which skillful means was already pointing. Abolishing the provisional does not deny what was formerly attained; it stops treating a temporary signboard as the ultimate dwelling. A swift horse sees the shadow of the whip and enters the right road. Once a gate opens, skillful means can lead to the real.

Finally, even “permanent abiding” cannot be judged by wording alone. The unconditioned permanence known by the Two Vehicles and the permanence of buddha-nature clarified in the Perfect Teaching share a name while the realization differs. Knowing the phrase “permanent abiding” does not guarantee arrival at what it indicates.

What partial and perfect truly ask is about this very thought now: am I advancing according to Dharma, or becoming self-satisfied according to a name? The fourteenth night need not deny its own light and need not pretend to be the fifteenth. Clearly seeing what remains, preserving the light already gained, and continuing toward fullness—this is where the judgment of partial and perfect lands in mind.

The potter has chosen the ground, stopped miscellaneous affairs, cured bodily illness, and put clay, wheel, and cords in order. But if he will not begin, works without diligence, forgets the method, lacks skillful means, or cannot remain single-minded, the vessel still will not appear.

This is why the Mohe Zhiguan teaches twenty-five preparatory means. Cultivation of calming-and-contemplation is not finding a secret shortcut. It is making five groups of conditions genuinely converge: five conditions settle what you rely upon; five desires no longer pull you outward; five hindrances no longer cover you from within; food, sleep, body, breath, and mind reach neither excess nor deficiency; and finally aspiration, effort, mindfulness, skillful wisdom, and one-pointed mind carry your whole being toward correct contemplation.

What is most dangerous is often not discarding everything at the outset. The rākṣasa first asks for the whole flotation bladder. Refused, it asks for half, then a hand’s span, a finger’s span, and finally only a speck of dust. If you say, “This little bit does not matter,” water begins to enter through the tiny hole. Precepts are like this, and so are desires and hindrances: what truly sinks a person is often the small opening repeatedly permitted.

But exertion too must remain regulated. Lute strings too tight will snap; too loose, they make no melody. Food should leave you neither hungry nor full, sleep neither harshly restricted nor indulged, body neither loose nor tense, breath neither rough nor slippery, and mind neither sunken nor floating. When calming is too strong, it too can sink; when contemplation loses measure, it too can float. Cultivation does not mean applying ever more force. It means hearing, again and again, which string has gone out of tune.

The five Dharmas are therefore still needed at the end. One-pointed mind is like a ship’s rudder, skillful wisdom like its nod toward the course, and aspiration, effort, and mindfulness like poles and oars. Without one, the boat cannot remain steady. Especially here, “one-pointed mind” first means deciding the direction; it does not mean you have already entered concentration. Where you intend to go determines how the other four are used. Whether seeking the first dhyāna, leaving birth and death, transforming beings, seeking prajñā, or entering the Middle Way, the same five Dharmas turn with their direction.

At the deepest reach of preparatory means, you no longer grasp inner and outer, distant and proximate. Attain their meaning and both inner and outer are gates. Miss their meaning and even the finest conditions become new bonds. What you truly lack may not be another method, but for every Dharma you already know finally to face the same one matter.

Once you genuinely begin the work, torpor, distraction, afflictions, illness, and even meditative concentration and the sense that you have attained something may all become more vivid. This does not immediately prove that cultivation is going well, nor does it immediately prove that you have taken a wrong turn.

Zhiyi first holds to only two sentences: do not follow, and do not fear. Following an object loses the correct road; retreating in fear also obstructs proper cultivation. When torpor comes, contemplate upon torpor. When distraction comes, calm within distraction. A pig rubbing against a golden mountain, many streams entering the sea, fuel making fire blaze, and wind enlarging the kalā-gurula insect—objects do not merely obstruct you; they also reveal whether calming-and-contemplation truly has strength.

The treatise therefore opens ten objects: aggregates/sense fields/elements, afflictions, illness, karmic marks, demonic affairs, meditative concentration, various views, overbearing pride, the Two Vehicles, and bodhisattvas. The first is not a mysterious experience but this very body and mind. It has never been absent. Cultivation need not wait for a special object before it can begin.

The remaining nine arise according to causes and conditions. They may have a sequence or disregard sequence, appear alone and distinctly or crisscross and overlap. A wholesome object may harm calming-and-contemplation, while an unwholesome one may deepen clarity and stillness. An object’s name, duration, ease, difficulty, or number of appearances cannot complete the judgment for you. The final questions remain: has calming become stiller, and has contemplation become clearer?

The sixteen rounds of questions and answers push this point to its limit. The five aggregates are the object and can also become contemplation. Although the aggregates turn, the contemplated object remains distinctly present. One thought has no graspable mark, yet the causes and results of the ten Dharma realms do not disappear. Dharma-nature is originally so, not made temporarily, like one mote of dust inherently possessing the divisions of the ten directions.

Proper cultivation does not mean finally encountering a perfect object. It means that whatever object comes, you make it neither master nor enemy. You see it clearly and investigate it in the present, neither mistakenly taking nor mistakenly abandoning it.

A thought arises and ceases, seemingly the most insignificant of things. Yet the Mohe Zhiguan gathers the five aggregates, twelve sense fields, and eighteen elements back into consciousness-mind, then unfolds from this thought the ten Dharma realms, three kinds of world, and ten suchnesses, finally saying: the three thousand are in one moment of mind.

This does not mean that mind is an infinitely large chest already packed with three thousand things. To say mind exists first and later produces all Dharmas arranges mind and Dharmas as before and after. To say all Dharmas are arrayed simultaneously inside mind arranges them as inside and outside. Zhiyi accepts neither side. He says only that mind is all Dharmas and all Dharmas are mind—neither vertical nor horizontal, neither one nor different.

If you ask whether the three thousand belong to mind, conditions, mind and conditions together, or something apart from both, none of the four answers can stand. If dream came only from mind, you should dream while awake. If only from sleep, a corpse should dream. If from mind joined with sleep, why is sleep sometimes dreamless? If apart from both, empty space should dream forever. No fixed birthplace of dream can be found, yet hundreds, thousands, and myriads of events appear vividly within it.

Thus unobtainable does not mean nothing exists, and inexpressible does not mean silence forever. Although none of the four alternatives can be grasped, the Buddha still teaches according to capacity through the worldly, individually adapted, counteractive, and ultimate siddhāntas—sometimes producing delight, sometimes faith, sometimes counteracting an illness, sometimes enabling one to see principle. Speaking all day without speaking; not speaking all day while speaking: breaking and establishing are not two separate acts.

A wish-fulfilling pearl is as small as a mustard or millet seed yet manifests treasures according to what is sought, neither storing them inside nor receiving them from outside. The three poisons have no fixed place, yet when conditions meet they expand into countless afflictions. A long dream passes through a hundred years, yet on waking it was still only one mind. All three similes remind us: “possession” is not storage, and “emptiness” is not annihilation. Existing without fixed existence, not fixedly existent yet appearing—this is the entry into contemplation of mind.

The real question, then, is not “How can my mind contain the world?” It is this: if the thought before me cannot be separated from all Dharmas, can I still treat my own delusion, another’s suffering, and the path of practice as three unrelated things? Once the object is illuminated, compassion, calming-and-contemplation, breaking attachment, and nonclinging take root together. Explanation follows a sequence; practice is wholly within one mind.

You know that beings are like space, afflictions unobtainable, Dharma gates quiescent, and buddhahood without possession. Then whom is there to deliver, what to sever, what to cultivate, and what to accomplish?

The Mohe Zhiguan answers neither by retreating into real existence nor by stopping in emptiness. A bird flies through space without abiding there, and its trace cannot be found. Precisely here the bodhisattva vows: though beings are like space, vow to deliver them; though afflictions have no existence, vow to sever them; though Dharma gates are quiescent, vow to know them; though the Buddha-path is not an attainment, vow to accomplish it. “True” does not mean speaking sincerely; it means that the vow is neither poisoned nor false. “Correct” does not mean taking one side; it means abiding neither in emptiness nor existence.

Yet after vows arise, mind can remain dark and scattered. Try to calm it and it runs faster; try to contemplate it and it grows blacker. The greatest danger then is turning a method of calming-and-contemplation into a creed. Some permit only calming, others only contemplation; both demand that everyone use the one gate through which they themselves benefited.

Zhiyi changes the question: what illness does this present mind actually have? Does it delight in quiescence or hearing? Do wholesome Dharmas fail to arise, or unwholesome thoughts fail to break? Does it race excessively, or sink into unconscious dullness? Calming is like water and contemplation like food; calming like a pill and contemplation like powdered medicine; calming like yin rain and contemplation like wind and sun. No medicine is eternally correct. What matters is whether it accords now.

Faith-practice can therefore be sharp or dull, and Dharma-practice sharp or dull. What hearing cannot clarify may be decided by one reflection; what contemplation cannot penetrate may open upon one hearing. Faith and Dharma shift, hearing and reflection mutually support, and calming and contemplation exchange places according to illness. The 512 ways of settling the mind are not 512 rungs of a ladder but a Dharma-net that omits no difference among beings.

A net must have many meshes, yet the bird lands in only one. If mind has settled in the truth, one sentence is enough; only while it remains unsettled is another entrance needed.

Truly settling the mind does not mean finally finding one eternally unchanging method. It means that whenever mind inclines again toward one side, you can still see Dharma-nature, remember the four great vows, and ask honestly: which medicine, at this moment, can turn vow into practice?

Mind attaches to “existence” and, after existence is broken, hides in “nonexistence.” Once nonexistence too is illuminated and broken, it says “both existence and nonexistence.” Taking one step further, it calls “neither existence nor nonexistence” the Middle Way. When all four alternatives have been overtaken, it can still finally declare: truth lies beyond words; I have become inexpressible.

Zhiyi allows mind to stop at none of these stations.

The three provisionalities—formation by causes, continuity, and relation—resemble three nested hiding places. One thought appears to arise from itself, yet when pursued, no self that could produce it can be found. Say it arises from an external object, and one still cannot find how an outer thing sends mind inward. Say faculty and object conjoin: if mirror and face each contain no image, their conjunction cannot manufacture a real one. Say the preceding thought connects to the next or this mind awaits no-mind: none escapes self, another, both, or no cause.

That all four alternatives are unobtainable does not mean nothing exists. Names still function through causes and conditions, and beings, faculties, and voiced teaching are likewise established through causes and conditions. Breaking does not destroy the world. It only prevents conditioned provisional establishments from usurping the status of intrinsic nature. One spit extinguishing fire and one breath forming a world therefore do not occupy two thoughts: at the very moment attachment is broken, every Dharma is revealed as capable of establishment through causes and conditions.

The most dangerous place is often not a coarse view of existence but an emptiness that closely resembles purity. Body and mind become indistinct and inner and outer do not appear; if one immediately claims “I have attained nonarising,” the empty object becomes a Dharma-object and the contemplator becomes self-view once again. Abandoning existence and attaching to nonexistence still resembles a measuring-worm stretching between two ends, or a monkey that has just left one branch and instantly grasps the next.

Calming-and-contemplation therefore resembles a vajra blade: wherever a view flees, it pursues. A single alternative escapes into the compound, the compound into the fully endowed, and the fully endowed into wordlessness. Even if no word is spoken, as long as silence is still taken as real principle, the net of views remains. True inexpressibility does not guard a position called “inexpressible.” It sees that speaker, spoken, and the very mind seeking refuge in wordlessness all lack intrinsic nature.

The final test is plain. Have views truly ceased? That is calming. Are nature-emptiness and mark-emptiness truly clear? That is contemplation. If one has merely obtained a higher, quieter, and harder-to-refute position, the blade cannot stop. If views cease and the two emptinesses are clear, the birthless gate is no longer merely a doctrine; it becomes the path that, in this very moment, is no longer led away by any view.

Breaking the afflictions of views does not mean craving, anger, delusion, and conceit have been exhausted. Direction can become clear in an instant, yet old momentum continues to moisten karma and draw one into birth. Zhiyi calls these the afflictions of thought: not because thought itself is blameworthy, but because after seeing the true, one must repeatedly consider the principle seen so the mind’s momentum loosens part by part.

Contemplative practice therefore begins not from a grand emptiness but from one thought of desire. It arises through the conjunction of faculty and object, strengthens through continuity before and after, and appears as desire only in relation to no desire. Yet when truly pursued, does it arise from faculty, object, both together, or no cause? It can be found in none of the four places. Emptiness is not a clean room left after desire has been driven away. At the very moment desire appears, it originally neither comes nor goes.

As with the first grade, so with the remaining eight; as in the desire realm, so in the form and formless realms. The deeper the bliss of dhyāna, the subtler the mind that may attach to it. The highest concentration lacks coarse delusion yet retains subtle Dharmas. The eighty-one grades are not a table to memorize. They warn that nowhere can “I understand” substitute for actual seeing.

Some travel swiftly and can leap over fruits. Others could move swiftly yet choose not to because they must turn the Dharma wheel, serve as attendant, or bear beings. Speed can differ, but distance cannot vanish. What is leapt over is the way a sequence is traversed, not the severance of one fewer grade of delusion. Sharp faculties and weighty vows need not oppose each other.

Existence, emptiness, both existence and nonexistence, and neither resemble a city’s four gates. If a gate is grasped as the only truth, it blocks itself. If it truly communicates, any gate can enter the city. At the Perfect gates, one gate immediately is the remaining three: one emptiness is every emptiness, one provisionality every provisionality, and one Middle every Middle.

This is the sharpest point of pervasive breaking through Dharmas. It distinguishes every item among the three realms, nine grounds, eighty-one grades, stages, and sixteen gates, yet allows none to harden into a graspable Dharma. You need not pretend that mind was never drawn away. At the very moment it is drawn, ask clearly where it actually comes from.

If all Dharmas are empty, who remains to be delivered, what illness remains to be treated, and what Dharma medicine could be given? Abiding in emptiness appears clean and free from bondage. Yet the Mohe Zhiguan’s path of calming-and-contemplation says that if one therefore never returns among beings, one can never benefit them.

Entering the provisional from emptiness does not mean picking up an attachment already broken. The bodhisattva enters emptiness to break his own bondage; he enters provisional existence to break the bondage of others. This step requires five powers: compassion that sees beings’ suffering as one’s own, the original vow that does not forget to remove suffering and give happiness, wisdom that sees the fault of abiding in emptiness, skillful means that enters the world without being stained by it, and diligence that does not weary or retreat before the length of the Buddha path and the countlessness of beings.

The treatise therefore portrays the bodhisattva as a great physician. A great physician cannot merely say, “Everything is empty.” He must know where an illness began, how long it has accumulated, and how environment and habit have shaped it. He must also know the names, doses, seasons, and uses of medicines. Some first need worldly wholesome Dharmas to stabilize human life. Some should cultivate ethical discipline, concentration, and wisdom. Some should enter through the four foundations of mindfulness or the Eightfold Path. Some can directly hear the single truth of reality. One rain falls, and plants and trees grow according to their faculties. The rain is not partial; what receives Dharma differs.

Nor must an old prescription be followed forever. Northern and southern regions differ; people differ in strength, foods in intensity, and illnesses in gravity. In later ages, Hua Tuo and Bian Que still had to examine the time and formulate new prescriptions from Shennong’s original ones. A bodhisattva’s transmission of scripture and composition of treatise are the same. This is not invention apart from scripture, but making Dharma truly curative for present faculties. Preserving an old prescription in a way that blocks transformation has already departed from the intent of entering the provisional.

How high a stage, then, qualifies someone to return? The treatise does not give everyone the same answer. Lower faculties may need long suppression and severance before irreversibility is certain. Middling faculties can emerge and function earlier. From the initial arousal of mind, higher faculties already study illness and medicine because they will not abandon beings. The initial mind must not be passed off as the ultimate; neither may benefiting others be postponed, because the road is long, to a future that never arrives.

Finally, “pervasive” does not mean knowing the greatest number of categories. If even one point among illness, medicine, and administration remains unpenetrated, knowledge is not yet pervasive. Breaking one layer only to proceed to the next is likewise not ultimate pervasiveness. The real question is whether this one mind can refrain from abiding in emptiness, remain unstained within the provisional, and illuminate immeasurable distinctions without departing from the true mark.

Emerging from emptiness is not turning back. It is the wisdom of emptiness finally growing wings that can bear beings.

Pervasively Breaking through Dharmas · The Middle Way

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

Contemplation of emptiness loosens the grasping of birth-and-death as real; contemplation of the provisional distinguishes beings’ illnesses and medicines. Having reached this point, the practitioner may believe that the wisdom in hand is already sharp enough and need only continue to be used.

The Mohe Zhiguan turns the problem around. The wisdom of the first two contemplations resembled vajra and penetrated the delusions of views and thought and those innumerable as dust and sand. In relation to the Middle Way, that wisdom can also combine with ignorance and become the final obstruction to penetrate. Wisdom is not wrong. Yet as long as contemplating wisdom is placed where it cannot itself be observed, it can become a new dependence.

Contemplation of the Middle does not therefore add a higher answer outside emptiness and provisionality. It first asks: do the two wisdoms arise from Dharma-nature, from ignorance, from both together, or without a cause? Investigated one by one, all four alternatives are unobtainable; yet they cannot simply be discarded. They resemble gates: used skillfully, they open passage; grasped, they turn and burn the person holding them.

Even “ignorance is Dharma-nature” cannot be seized as an attractive conclusion. Ice and water are not two things glued together. One jewel produces water when turned toward the moon and fire when turned toward the sun, but this does not mean two substances were hidden inside it. Names of delusion and awakening are established according to conditions. What must be broken is precisely the reification of ignorance and Dharma-nature as separate things followed by an imagined account of how they become identical.

Gates can therefore be immeasurable. One person enters through nonarising, another through nonceasing, neither defilement nor purity, or nonabiding. Different entrances do not divide the principle encountered into many principles. Horizontally there are immeasurable gates; vertically, the sequence of three contemplations. All are finally gathered into the present one mind: one conditionally arisen thought is immediately empty, immediately provisional, and immediately the Middle.

The true place to begin need not wait for an ideally pure mind. When desire, anger, or pride arises, grasping at self and beings appears right there. Within that very thought, calming-and-contemplation can also be complete together. The Middle Way does not seek a secure place apart from affliction; it permits no thought to escape illumination.

At this point, the third contemplation may not be asking what higher wisdom you can still acquire. It may be asking whether the wisdom you already possess is willing to illuminate itself.

Discerning Passage and Obstruction · Regulating the Factors of the Path

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

Affliction is obstruction; that is easy to see. Breaking affliction with wisdom is passage; that is easy to understand. The real danger comes when you cherish the wisdom that actively breaks: passage turns into obstruction in your very hands. Contemplation is still called contemplation, but it begins protecting a self who says, “I am contemplating.” What actively breaks then takes the same side as what it breaks.

Discerning passage and obstruction therefore does not mean breaking every Dharma one meets. It resembles removing a film from the eye while nurturing its bright jewel, or defeating a band of thieves while preserving a good general: break what should be broken, nurture what should be nurtured, and do not exempt even the mind that actively breaks. Merely saying emptiness, provisionality, and the Middle may resemble insects boring into wood and accidentally forming written words. Truly knowing the words means seeing, within every thought, everything that contemplates, and everything contemplated, when passage appears and when obstruction appears.

Nor are the five hundred yojanas a straight line onto which one can force a rigid correlation. They are simultaneously the places of birth-and-death traversed, the five levels of affliction severed, and the three contemplations of emptiness, provisionality, and the Middle that illuminate. A key with one notch cannot open a lock with three teeth. The road must be discerned from all three sides, and the horizontal truths, dependent origination, and perfections must be woven into the vertical emptiness, provisionality, and Middle, so that every step of a beginner can truly be inspected.

In the end, three contemplations in one mind make mountains, rivers, and stone walls all like empty space; one need neither leave low ground to climb high nor avoid mountains to follow valleys. Yet even “neither passage nor obstruction” cannot be grasped. The moment it is grasped, it becomes a new obstruction. Neither passage nor obstruction does not mean neglecting everything. It means breaking obstruction when it appears and protecting passage when it appears, without appropriating breaking or protecting as an attainment.

Knowing the route is not enough; the pace must also be regulated. The thirty-seven factors resemble brewing wine and growing a tree. If warmth, yeast, and malt are out of balance, water cannot become wine. If seed, sprout, root, stems and leaves, flowers, and fruit each miss their season, the tree of the path cannot bear fruit. When mind floats, tranquility, equanimity, and concentration settle it. When mind sinks, diligence, investigation of Dharmas, and joy arouse it. Mindfulness holds both sides. Regulation does not add another Dharma; it lets the Dharmas already present mutually arise in just the right way now.

The uncontaminated city has three gates: emptiness, signlessness, and nonaction. Whether one enters through meditative concentration or wisdom, true wisdom can arise. One gate can also possess all three, and all three return to one. A true great guide does not merely know where the destination lies. Without clinging to passage where the way is open or being trapped by obstruction where it is blocked, the guide makes this very step already face the place of jewels.

Aids to the Path · Counteraction

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

The contemplating mind is clear, yet at the touch of wealth you cannot let go. You wish to abide in samādhi, yet one unwelcome sentence ignites anger. You know life is impermanent, yet night after night you still delay. The problem is not necessarily the absence of a direct path. Your faculties may be dull and your obstruction heavy: before the gate of contemplation has opened, old habits have already dragged the mind away.

This is where aids to the path arise. When stinginess appears, giving opens the hand. When body and speech lose restraint, moral discipline gathers them in. When anger poisons the mind, tolerance bears it. When advance turns into retreat, diligence keeps the fire alive. When distraction shakes like a lamp in the wind, meditative concentration brings stability. When annihilation, permanence, person, and self leave one facing a wall, wisdom illuminates and breaks through. More medicine is not necessarily better; it must fit the illness present now.

If one medicine does not fit, rotate skillfully. Treat directly, change treatments, combine them, or illuminate from the ultimate meaning that neither what treats nor what is treated can be grasped. Practice does not impose one fixed prescription on everyone, nor use “emptiness” as a reason to do nothing. It asks concretely: Did this method actually break the obscuration and assist the Dharma gate in opening?

The hardest thing to illuminate is often the gap between understanding and practice. Your mouth says body, life, and wealth are illusory, while your hands refuse to release a hair’s worth. You know no-self, yet praise and insult make you stick “me” everywhere. You know impermanence, yet treat a hundred years as guaranteed. Zhizhe compares concrete practice to lamp oil. Without light, oil alone cannot show the way; when the oil runs dry, the light already burning cannot continue.

The six perfections and factors of the path therefore need not compete for rank. When the factors cannot meet the true, the perfections break obscuration. When the perfections cannot reach the shore, the factors bring awakening and entry. Each can break and cultivate the other, and each can immediately be the other. Direct and assisting resemble eyes and feet: eyes know the direction so feet can reach it; feet keep moving so the road seen does not remain only in the mind.

The five gates are the same. When initial and sustained application are excessive, count breaths. When desire blazes, contemplate impurity. When anger chases objects, cultivate loving-kindness. When deviant inversion is rigid, contemplate dependent origination. When torpor and wrongdoing obstructing the path arise, recollect the Buddha. Distinguish the illness first, then choose the gate. If you select only methods you enjoy, you may keep using a familiar medicine to avoid the real disease.

Finally, the treatise unfolds the six perfections through the six faculties, ten powers, fearlessnesses, eloquence, superknowledges, dhāraṇīs, and marks and excellences. This does not pile up labels. It says that seeing form, hearing sound, meeting adversity, making decisions, and teaching another can each become a place for breaking obscuration and practicing direct and assisting together. Aids to the path are not a set of assignments remote from the direct path. When old habits are about to pull correct contemplation down, they let understanding grow back into action.

Today, do not begin by asking how much you understand. Look first: which obscuration is moving? Is it still only within mind, or has it already flowed through body and speech? At this step, should you open the hand, preserve a precept, endure, continue, gather the mind, or illuminate and break through? Find the illness and let the corresponding perfection truly occur. The gate may then begin to loosen precisely where it was obstructed.

Stages · Patient Endurance · Freedom from Attachment to Dharmas

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

At the beginning of practice, enemies are easy to recognize: distraction, affliction, reputation and gain, and the mind of retreat. When the gate of contemplation gradually opens, scriptures and treatises suddenly become intelligible and people enjoy listening to one's teaching, but danger instead changes its appearance. It no longer calls one away from the Buddha-Dharma. It causes one to believe: I have already arrived.

Zhizhe therefore establishes three successive gates at the point where the ten dharmas are nearly complete.

The first gate is knowledge of stages. The stage of the real and the stage of semblance resemble vermilion and purple: close at first glance, they cannot be called the same. Having a treasury at home does not mean its treasure has been brought forth; possessing perfect understanding in one thought does not mean ignorance has been broken. Discerning one's stage does not belittle the present thought. It simultaneously guards two things: one does not shrink back because realization has not yet occurred, and one does not pass off the unattained as attained.

The second gate is patient endurance. When wisdom first becomes keen, it resembles a sharp blade that severs whatever it touches; one phrase can resolve another's doubt, and people begin to gather. Yet a young elephant may be buried amid blades and arrows, and a handful of hot water poured into an icy pool may instead thicken the ice. If one's strength is not yet full, temporarily concealing the precious jade, declining reputation and gain, and departing from familiar places do not mean abandoning beings. They allow the strength capable of liberating beings truly to mature. The body may temporarily be far away; mind does not depart.

The third gate is most subtle: freedom from attachment to dharmas. Inner obstruction has been removed, like a boat not touching sand; outer obstruction has passed, like a boat not touching the bank; yet when the wind ceases, the boat still remains upon the water. What one loves is not an evil affair but precisely the present lucidity, stability, and apparently flawless wholesome Dharma. This remaining may not be regression, yet it likewise cannot reach the shore. Only by releasing attachment to the Dharma attained does the boat move forward again.

The ten dharmas thus become one complete great carriage: high because it penetrates the three truths, broad because it encompasses the ten Dharma realms, sheltered by loving-kindness and compassion, secured by vows, adorned by the factors of the path, and, after attachment to dharmas is broken, empowered with speed like the wind. Yet if the great carriage remains only on paper, it still cannot carry anyone. The real test comes when the foot is raised and lowered, when form is seen and sound heard, and at the instant reputation suddenly arrives or affliction suddenly arises: can contemplative method operate on the spot?

The final three similes state the answer gravely. One who knows military strategy but does not use it in battle cannot serve the state. One who knows a medical formula but does not take it cannot cure illness. One who understands principles and meanings yet grows timid when questioned cannot become a master of the Dharma. To hear calming-and-contemplation without using it is like a black serpent carrying a jewel: however precious the jewel, it does not illuminate the serpent's life.

Once the road has become smooth, what must truly be released is often no longer an obstruction but the thought “I am already walking very well.” Knowledge of stages prevents reckless advance; patient endurance prevents one from being carried away; freedom from attachment to dharmas prevents one from stopping. Only after all three gates have been passed does what one has learned become not merely knowledge of a road but a vehicle one can truly ride forward.

Contemplating the Object of Afflictions

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

When contemplation of the aggregates, sense fields, and elements has not brought awakening yet observation continues, intense greed and anger suddenly erupt. Zhizhe neither decorates this moment as purity nor immediately judges it a regression. He says only: the contemplated object has changed; one must now turn to contemplate afflictions.

Before iron enters fire, one sees only black; once it enters, it glows red throughout. While water flows downstream, one does not notice its speed; place a log crosswise and its entire rush appears. Cultivation of contemplation does not add a mass of fire to mind. It prevents latent power from remaining hidden. The real danger is not seeing affliction but failing to recognize its characteristics, allowing it to lead one into grave transgressions, and mistaking loss of control for unobstructedness.

Therefore “afflictions are themselves the path” is immediately followed by two guardrails: one may neither follow nor sever them. Follow affliction and it leads toward evil paths. Hurry to cut it away and one easily abides in discipline, imagining that only after total severance will some separate path appear. The bodhisattva road is more difficult: courageous in birth and death without defilement, like a flower in mud; knowing emptiness without abiding in emptiness, like a bird flying through space. It neither opens a gate for indulgence nor turns quiescence into a hiding place.

The mango pit and salt both fail in the same way: taking one sentence alone and pushing it too far. Some borrow unobstructedness to indulge desire; others fear both extremes and first sever before they will speak. One side calls itself freedom and the other purity, yet both are trapped by the extreme they selected. The eight propositions of abiding and nonabiding loosen this partial fixation. When one should abide and when one should not depends on whether self and others benefit and whether that benefit is immediate or remote; it cannot be decided by a slogan.

Within one thought of affliction, light and darkness can be simultaneous without mutual obstruction. When a lamp shines, one cannot find where darkness went; when the lamp goes out, one cannot find where darkness returned from. Rely only on the lamp of worldly wisdom, and delusion returns when the lamp is extinguished. Contemplate the darkness of affliction as itself the light of great wisdom, and this object can turn into arousal and settling of mind, then proceed through breaking obstructions, passage and obstruction, factors of the path, aids to the path, stages, patient endurance, and freedom from attachment. It is not an emergency suppression of intense delusion.

The sharpest question in contemplating the object of afflictions is therefore not “How can I have no afflictions?” but this: when affliction appears, am I following it, rushing to drive it away, or able neither to receive, attach, think, nor discriminate, allowing this mass of darkness to become the place where the road is seen?

Contemplating the Object of Illness

The Mohe Zhiguan (Great Calming-and-Contemplation) does not romanticize illness as a gift. Illness can destroy moral discipline, like puncturing the flotation bladder used to cross the sea. It can damage concentration, like dismantling a bridge over a river. It can make one care only for this foul body of pus and blood and lose correct mindfulness. Illness can obstruct the path, and obstruct it deeply.

Zhizhe therefore does not begin with elegant transcendence. He asks one to discern the illness, find its cause, select a treatment, and observe harm and benefit. What comes from cold, heat, or food cannot be treated as dysregulation in seated meditation. Even the same method, applied excessively, can turn treatment into illness. Beyond faith, application, diligence, and constancy, one must recognize illness, act skillfully, persist, retain and discard, care and protect, and recognize obstruction. Practice is not an exercise in bravado. It resembles tuning a zither string: too loose or too tight, it produces no sound.

Yet healing illness is not the text's endpoint. Because of the same illness, some resent and slander, indulge desire, and move toward the three evils. Some produce shame and conscience and practice goodness. Some see the dangerous fragility of birth and death. Some begin from their own pain to find the pain of beings unbearable. Illness does not choose a direction for anyone. It only presses this one thought of mind to the place where one can no longer pretend not to see it.

The real turn is ceasing to seek a pure mind somewhere outside illness. This present thought of ill mind is neither real nor existent and is itself the Dharma realm. This does not deny pain; it ceases to nail “I” and “illness” into two solid entities. Only when the crazed and thirsty person stops chasing a mirage do body and mind settle. Only when mind stops racing after the six objects is there a place for correct wisdom of dependent origination to arise.

Illness then turns from private suffering into an entrance to compassion. When the child is ill, the parents become ill; when the child heals, the parents heal. A bodhisattva regulates one's own mind not to become cool and refreshed alone, but because the path of transformation cannot stop while beings remain ill. If one's own suffering only makes mind smaller, illness is still dragging one along. If it makes one genuinely see all who are ill, great compassion has begun to turn the object of illness.

Beryl can be clearly seen at the bottom of a deep pool, yet one cannot claim to hold it already. Even if illness diminishes and contemplative practice becomes luminous, one must not attach. Knowledge of stages prevents false claims; patient endurance prevents retreat; freedom from attachment prevents stopping at what has been attained. Then illness need not first vanish from one's life, yet it is no longer only a heavy burden blocking the road: the practitioner can swiftly enter the Dharma stream and obtain one great carriage.

Contemplating the Object of Karmic Signs

心要Heart-Essence

When signs of good and evil unseen in ordinary life suddenly appear during calming-and-contemplation, it is easy to imagine that one has received some special confirmation. Zhiyi first asks something else: after the sign appears, where does your mind go?

A wholesome sign does not necessarily aid the path. If it gives rise to craving and arrogance, contempt for others, or pursuit of reputation and gain, a wholesome sign can turn into a great obstruction. Nor must an unwholesome sign drive one from the path. If it gives rise to shame, repentance, the severing of evil, and cultivation of good, what was an obstruction instead becomes a condition for advance. Direction is determined not only by what one sees, but by whether one grasps it afterward.

The treatise therefore lists retributive result, habitual cause, their sequence, simultaneous arising, and indeterminate arising, then unfolds good and evil through the six perfections and six obscurations. Yet the finer the lists become, the more emphatic the warning. One sight cannot decide a case, and an intense feeling cannot replace renewed testing. To judge signs publicly for another person, one must also have undergone actual verification oneself and received a teacher's oral instructions. When fine judgment is impossible, the safest path is not to guess. Know generally that the sign is an obstruction, do not grasp it, and apply mind directly to contemplation of principle.

Great-Vehicle equality does not mean closing one's eyes to good and evil. Precisely because the mirror-substance is pure, myriad images can appear; precisely because ultimate meaning remains unmoved, all characteristics of Dharmas can be skillfully distinguished. Distinguishing good and evil without being defiled by either, and seeing transgression and merit without abiding in either, is the genuine clarity of the equal mirror.

Finally, Zhiyi carries karma into the ten modes. Sought throughout past, present, and future, karma has no fixed intrinsic nature, and neither agent nor recipient can be obtained. Yet the world still distinguishes good and evil through conventional names; emptiness does not cancel cause and result. One then contemplates the direct and dependent retributions of the ten realms within the karma of one thought, generates compassion toward opposition and loving-kindness toward accord, and proceeds until one does not falsely claim noble stages, patiently endures every obstruction, does not produce attachment to Dharma, and naturally flows into coolness.

What contemplating karmic signs truly seeks is not a pair of eyes more skilled at seeing extraordinary signs, but a mind that signs cannot carry away: good and evil remain distinct, and cause and result are not obscured; when a sign comes, illuminate it, and when it goes, do not pursue it. With every seeing, return the path to calming-and-contemplation.

Contemplating the Object of Demonic Affairs

心要Heart-Essence

We often assume that once an obstruction disappears, cultivation naturally improves. The Mohe Zhiguan (Great Calming-and-Contemplation) ends by asking more deeply: after demonic disturbance ceases, must wholesome Dharma follow as inevitably as spring after winter? The answer is no.

Māra need not appear in a frightening form. There are poisoned arrows that cause fear, flower arrows that arouse delight, and arrows neither forceful nor gentle—so ordinary that they pass unnoticed. They shoot through eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body and turn into mind in an instant. If inner shooting fails, praise and blame and relations among teachers, disciples, fellow students, and donors can be fanned from outside. The real entrance lies not only in what appears, but in whether mind accepts and grasps it.

The treatise therefore includes brightness, concentration, wisdom, joy, happiness, blessing, good, and love among possible deviant signs. An attractive name does not prove a correct direction. If concentration rigidifies like wood or stone, wisdom becomes mere cleverness, good draws one away from one's original practice, or love becomes entangling attachment, each can destroy the order of the contemplating mind. The subtlest demonic affair does not disguise evil as evil; it disguises deviation as progress.

Treatment is therefore not simply “do not be afraid.” At the first awareness, do not accept. If something has already been accepted, illuminate it everywhere: from where does Māra come, and where is mind? Both disturber and disturbed are sought and found unobtainable. If it still does not leave, resist with firm mind, setting death as the limit and refusing to dwell with it. Refusal, illumination, and steadfastness each close a different entrance.

Yet the highest contemplation says that the Māra realm does not leave the Buddha realm. This neither mixes deviant and correct nor lets disturbance enter at will. It sees that Māra has no fixed intrinsic nature beyond transformation. That eighty billion beings cannot shake mind is calming; penetrating the Māra realm as itself the Buddha realm is contemplation. When mind remains unmoved yet illuminates, and sees nonduality without losing discernment, Māra resembles firewood thrown into a fire and makes the flame of the path shine more brightly.

Finally, to obtain one verse, a bodhisattva is willing to use skin as paper, bone as brush, and blood as ink. After promising the verse, Māra suddenly disappears, but the bodhisattva's mind seeking Dharma does not disappear with him. Precisely because Māra did not manufacture this mind, a buddha emerges from below and teaches the Dharma.

Māra is evoked by unwholesome conditions; good is produced through one's own power of mind. An obstruction's retreat merely removes one stone from the road. It neither arouses mind for you nor takes the next step. What contemplation of demonic affairs must truly preserve is not “at last there is no Māra,” but this: whether Māra comes or goes, the mind directed toward the path still arises from oneself.

Contemplating the Object of Meditative Concentration

心要Heart-Essence

Body is light and at ease, the mind-ground bright and pure, and joy and happiness unlike anything before. At this very moment, one sentence arises most easily: I have arrived.

Yet the Mohe Zhiguan (Great Calming-and-Contemplation) says that meditative concentration too must become a contemplated object. Without concentration, one loses an aid to the path; with concentration, attachment to its savor binds one through concentration. Jumping into water to escape fire still does not mean danger has been escaped. The real question is not whether the object is good, but whether mind, on encountering a good object, immediately turns it into “my attainment.”

The chapter therefore explains arising signs with extreme precision. The eight contacts are movement, itching, lightness, heaviness, cold, warmth, roughness, and smoothness. Correct contact further possesses ten merits: emptiness, brightness, concentration, wisdom, wholesome mind, softness, joy, happiness, liberation, and correspondence. Yet if emptiness becomes extinction of awareness, brightness pursuit of lights and colors, or concentration rigid immobility, the sign is already excessive. Wind can make rain and can also destroy it. Intensity does not equal correctness.

Past habituation resembles seed in the earth, calming-and-contemplation rain, and buddha-power sunlight. Rain falls at once, yet plum, peach, pear, and persimmon ripen separately. Even people seated together will not experience identical objects of dhyāna. Chapter order is not everyone’s order of arising, and another person’s signs are still less a proof of one’s own realization. Recognize an object when it comes and do not seek it when it does not; only then does practice not become a collection of experiences.

The same applies to impurity, loving-kindness, dependent origination, recollection of the Buddha, and superknowledge. Impurity is not world-rejection; in the end it must still open into loving-kindness and compassion. Loving-kindness does not merely love pure marks; it must also know that the body will disintegrate. If a Buddha’s light is seen while no correct Dharma gate is present in mind, the stronger the light, the more it may be delusion. Superknowledge is only a function of dhyāna, not its root and still less liberation.

Finally, Zhizhe returns every sign of dhyāna to one thought. Dhyāna can produce birth among humans and gods, and can also produce pride, broken moral discipline, and evil karma. It can open the paths of śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and bodhisattvas, and can also enter the king samādhi like streams returning to the sea. A snake entering a bamboo tube becomes temporarily straight and curves again upon emerging: the absence of evil while in concentration does not mean afflictions have been severed.

The true turn is seeing that neither concentration nor distraction departs from the Dharma-nature of this one thought. It is not abandoning distraction in order to possess a separate eternal stillness, nor passing an ordinary being’s emotional consciousness off as noble concentration. Sentient beings and the attainment of cessation are neither identical nor separate; the wondrous lies precisely here.

When meditative concentration appears, the path has only just begun. Do not hurry to ask, “What level have I reached?” Ask first: does this happiness make me freer, or more unwilling to let it go?

Contemplating the Object of Views

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

There is something that traps people not by resembling darkness, but by suddenly lighting up. Layer upon layer of principle unfolds; every challenge can be answered; others cannot outargue you, and you grow increasingly certain. Zhizhe calls this moment “the arising of a view.” It is neither madness nor noble realization. It possesses the sharpness of wisdom, yet may still be wholly wrapped in craving, anger, pride, and doubt.

Deviance and correctness therefore cannot be distinguished merely by how much someone has read, how profoundly one can speak, whether one has attained concentration, or whether one can display superknowledges. Non-Buddhists can possess vast learning, while people within Buddha-Dharma can grasp a correct gate and turn it into a deviant view. A city has four gates, and each originally leads to the king. If one remains beneath a gate counting tiles and timbers, disputing north and south and judging fine and coarse, the gate turns from a passage into a prison. The gate is not at fault; the person has mistaken it for the destination.

Then, once something is known to be a view, should it be cut off immediately? The Mohe Zhiguan gives an unusual simile: when the abdomen contains worms, first nurture a tape-worm to devour them, and later use medicine to purge the tape-worm. Although arisen view-wisdom is an obstruction, it may first devour some stubborn dullness and enable a person to awaken as soon as the Dharma is heard. But the view must still be treated in the end. “Nurturing views and examining the mind” does not build a home for attachment; it borrows attachment to reach the place where correct contemplation can illuminate and break it.

The whole chapter therefore places the strongest view—the view of emptiness—within calming-and-contemplation. When emptiness is grasped, it can produce anger and love, create good and evil, and circulate through the ten realms. When emptiness becomes what is contemplated, one can discern suffering and origination within it, cultivate the path, realize cessation, contemplate the twelve links in forward and reverse order, produce the four vast vows, and practice the six perfections. The same word “emptiness” can on one side devour every Dharma and on the other be contemplated as a gate of escape. The boundary does not lie in speaking of emptiness, but in whether the mind still uses emptiness to establish self, superiority, and dispute.

Look more deeply: the ten realms are not merely produced one after another following the view of emptiness. One thought of the view of emptiness intrinsically possesses the ten Dharma realms and is precisely Dharma-nature; sentient beings, the five aggregates, and liberation need not be sought outside the mind. Yet “intrinsic possession” does not collect the destination in advance. Precisely because ignorance and Dharma-nature are both clearly present in one thought, one must produce kindness and compassion, skillfully settle the mind, break attachments universally, and clearly discern one's stage, until attachment no longer arises even toward Dharmas conforming to the path.

What contemplating the object of views finally leaves behind is not a view higher than every other view. It only brings the mind before an unavoidable question: when I am most certain that I see the truth, does this certainty lead me through the gate, or keep me standing at its entrance?
