〔T46 0020a24〕
心要Essence

When cultivation bears fruit, clarity, stability, and even genuine evidence of realization may appear immediately. These are not false. Yet the Mohe Zhiguan’s teaching of calming-and-contemplation reminds us that a result attained now is not necessarily the fruition meant here.

Cultivation is called “habituated practice” and “habituated cause”; realization is called “arising attainment” and “habituated result.” This cause and result can both be obtained in the present life. Realm-retribution lies across a future life. Both contain the word “result,” but their times and referents differ: what is realized today does not mean that everything to be received in a future life has already appeared.

What relation, then, does future fruition have to today? Practice that opposes the Middle Way brings forth fruition at the two extremes; practice that accords with it brings forth excellent and wondrous fruition. Fruition is not a sudden reward or punishment descending from nowhere. It reveals the direction of present practice.

The Fragrant City’s seven walls and picture-like bridges and fords flash only once in the passage. The image shows that even anticipatory result already differs—how much more true fruition. The author immediately points onward and does not fill what remains unexplained with imagination.

The real question today is therefore not “What object have I already attained?” but “In what direction am I practicing?” Evidence of realization should be cherished but cannot impersonate the endpoint. A future life has not appeared, but neither is it unrelated to this moment. Every act that accords with the Middle Way is already answering what one will bring forth.

Plain reading

The third summary teaches calming-and-contemplation in order to clarify the pure great fruition brought forth by a bodhisattva. Practice that opposes the Middle Way brings forth fruition at the two extremes; practice that accords with the Middle Way brings forth excellent and wondrous fruition. Even before one has left fragmentary birth and death, the anticipatory result obtained already differs from that of the seven preparatory means—how much more the true fruition. The Fragrant City has seven walls, and its bridges and fords are like a painting: this is the appearance of such fruition. This meaning should be extensively distinguished later in the eighth Broad Chapter.

Someone asks: The Sequential Dharma Gate of Dhyāna explains cultivation and realization. Are they identical with or different from the fruition discussed here?

The answer: cultivation is called “habituated practice,” and realization “arising attainment.” Cultivation may also be called “habituated cause,” and realization “habituated result.” All of these can be attained in this life. What is discussed here is realm-retribution, received only across a future life, so the two differ. The Two Vehicles have only habituated result and do not have this fruition; the Great Vehicle possesses both habituated result and fruition〔云云〕.

義疏Exposition

Cultivation can produce realization, and realization can be called a result. Why, then, must evidence of realization obtained by a practitioner in this life remain distinct from the great fruition brought forth by a bodhisattva? In explaining why calming-and-contemplation is taught, the treatise first uses the Middle Way to indicate two directions of fruition, next uses the Fragrant City to disclose the appearance of anticipatory result, and finally answers directly how this life differs from a future life.

The Middle Way First Separates Two Directions

Fruition is not an accidental encounter unrelated to practice. Practice that opposes the Middle Way brings forth fruition at the two extremes; practice that accords with it brings forth excellent and wondrous fruition. The direction of practice is viewed first and the resulting destination second. Both are called fruition, yet because opposition and accord differ, their destinations also differ.

This contrast is brief, but it joins the preceding unit, Cultivating the Great Practice, to Bringing Forth the Great Fruit. Practice does not merely change one present thought. The direction it accords with or opposes becomes a condition for the fruition later received. The excellent and wondrous is not an ornate realm sought apart from the Middle Way, nor do the two extremes arrive without cause. Fruition discloses the direction of practice.

Why Does the Fragrant City Flash Past Only Once?

The treatise next says that even before leaving fragmentary birth and death, the anticipatory result already differs from that of the seven preparatory means—how much more the true fruition. The sentence moves from anticipatory to true fruition: if even the former is so, how much more the latter. It does not unfold the names of the seven preparatory means or spread true fruition into a complete panorama. It lets relative weight alone show that what is brought forth already differs.

The Fragrant City’s seven walls and picture-like bridges and fords form the passage’s only concrete image. They prevent the appearance of fruition from remaining an abstract name. Yet the image flashes once and is immediately gathered by a sentence pointing to extensive later explanation. The author lets readers see the direction without filling in advance what is still to be taught.

That restraint matters. The Fragrant City is raised here as the appearance of anticipatory result, showing that practice and fruition are not empty names. Pointing to the eighth Broad Chapter does not mean the present passage is already exhaustive. Its own measure is this: practice accords or opposes; fruition tends toward an extreme or the wondrous; anticipatory result has a visible appearance; and true fruition awaits extensive explanation.

What Is Attained in This Life and Received in a Future Life

The question therefore returns to the easiest point to confuse. The Sequential Dharma Gate of Dhyāna speaks of cultivation and realization, and realization can be called a result. How does that differ from the fruition here?

The answer gives two names each for cultivation and realization. Cultivation is “habituated practice” and “habituated cause”; realization is “arising attainment” and “habituated result.” Habituation is repeated cultivation that comes to accomplishment. Cause and result correspond earlier and later within this relation, and both can be attained in this life. Cultivation is not fruitless, and realization really arises and is attained from cultivation. Distinguishing fruition must not turn present evidence of realization into nothing.

The real boundary lies in time and in what is under discussion. Habituated cause and result formed through cultivation and realization both occur in this life; the realm-retribution discussed here lies across a future life. Both may contain the word “result,” but their shared name does not merge them. The first answers how cultivation brings realization in the present life; the second what future-life fruition conduct will bring forth.

The last sentence concludes through the Two and Great Vehicles: the Two Vehicles have only habituated result, not the fruition meant here; the Great Vehicle possesses both. This does not deny what the Two Vehicles attain through cultivation and realization. It precisely limits the scope of “fruition” in this passage. Preserve that boundary and one knows that realization does not mean all fruition has already appeared, while future fruition is not unrelated to present practice.

Through the Eye of the Fuxing

Zhanran’s Zhiguan Fuxing Chuanhong Jue (hereafter Fuxing) illuminates the boundaries of the abbreviated text, while the Zhiguan Yili judges that this passage indicates beginning and end rather than itself presenting the marks of cultivation. The excellent and wondrous fruition here is explained through the real-reward land; the lands of skillful means and common residence remain the two extremes. Not breaking ignorance is called opposition, while the first ground of the Separate Teaching and first abode of the Perfect Teaching mark wondrous fruition. The four lands and stages unfold in the mirror and are not lists supplied by the author’s own sentence.

Anticipatory result names the adorned land of one who has not left fragmentary birth and death and not yet entered extinction. The seven preparatory means list humans, devas, the Two Vehicles, and bodhisattvas of the three teachings. The City of Many Fragrances discloses the excellence of anticipatory result. The later eighth Broad Chapter should have explained it extensively, but no such text survives, so it cannot be supplied.

The eye of the final distinction is that two kinds of result must not be confused. Cultivation and realization are only present-life habituated cause and result; realm-retribution lies across a future life. What the Two Vehicles obtain remains habituated result, while the fruition here is stated in relation to the Great Vehicle. The mirror gives present realization and future fruition each its proper place.

考據Apparatus

This unit is the third of the Five Summaries within Great Purport, the first of the Ten Broad Chapters. Its first half distinguishes results at the two extremes from excellent and wondrous results according to opposition or accord with the Middle Way, then discloses their difference through anticipatory results, seven kinds of preparatory means, and the appearance of the City of Many Fragrances. Its second half asks how cultivation and realization in the Sequential Dharma Gate of Dhyāna relate to the results described here, distinguishing habituated cause and habituated result obtained in this life from the realm-retribution received in a later life. Although the passage is extremely short, the author’s own words, Zhanran’s outline and explanations, extant cited texts, and later reception must remain on separate levels.

1. Doctrinal-Outline Placement

This unit begins with 「○第三、為明菩薩清淨大果報故,說是止觀者」 tr. “Third, this calming-and-contemplation is taught in order to clarify the bodhisattva’s pure great fruition”〔T1911 0020a24〕 and ends with 「二乘但有習果,無有果報,大乘具有」 tr. “The Two Vehicles have only habituated result and do not have fruition; the Great Vehicle possesses both”〔T1911 0020b03〕. The following sentence, 「○第四、為通裂大網諸經論故」 tr. “Fourth, in order to interconnect and tear open the great net of scriptures and treatises”〔T1911 0020b04〕, has already entered the next unit.

The Zhiguan Fuxing Chuanhong Jue (hereafter Fuxing) first classifies this within the Five Summaries as 「次感大果自行果也。」 tr. “Next, Bringing Forth the Great Fruit is the result of one’s own practice”〔T1912 0142a27〕. Its direct commentary then divides the passage into two sections:

SectionRange in the treatiseContent in the treatiseOutline sentence and range in the Fuxing
1T1911 0020a24–0020a29Proof of what opposition and accord bring forth; anticipatory result; pointer to later extensive explanationBeginning with 「第三果報中。 tr. “Within the third, fruition: first, proof and clarification”〔T1912 0214c02〕, through before T1912 0215a16
2T1911 0020a29–0020b04Critical distinction between cultivation and realization and fruitionBeginning with 「問下料簡也。」 tr. “From the question onward is critical distinction”〔T1912 0215a16〕, through T1912 0215a25

Within the first section, opposition and accord, anticipatory result, the City of Many Fragrances, and the pointer to later explanation are a sequence of meanings and are not expanded into four separate divisions. The question and answer of the second section likewise form one division. Bringing Forth the Great Fruit within the Five Summaries indicates the result of one’s own practice and the beginning and end of the whole work; it does not present the later marks of practice in advance.

2. Formation and Transmission

This unit continues the record in Origins of one summer’s exposition at Yuquan, Guanding’s transcription, and the incompleteness of the extant transmission. The threefold evidence of incompleteness and the history of three textual states are detailed there and are not repeated here.

3. Verification of the Scriptures and Treatises Cited

This unit has two identifiable groups of external references: the chapter on cultivation and realization in the work the treatise abbreviates as the Sequential Dharma Gate of Dhyāna, and the City of Many Fragrances plus the ensuing exchange explicitly attributed by the Fuxing to the Dazhidu Lun. The designations, abbreviated canon numbers, and headings of the works are as follows:

Cultivation and Realization in the Sequential Dharma Gate of Dhyāna

LevelVerbatim comparisonVerification
Question in the treatise「問:《次第禪門》明修證,與此果報云何同異?」 tr. “Question: How are the cultivation and realization explained in the Sequential Dharma Gate of Dhyāna identical with or different from the fruition here?”〔T1911 0020a29〕The title is the treatise’s customary abbreviation
Judgment in the Fuxing「次第禪門中。 tr. “In the Sequential Dharma Gate of Dhyāna, the seventh major chapter explains cultivation and realization. Because realization is obtained through cultivation, it is called cultivation and realization. Realization is itself a result”〔T1912 0215a16〕It explicitly indicates the seventh major chapter and explains why realization is called a result
Extant chapter title「釋禪波羅蜜修證第七之一」 tr. “Explanation of the Cultivation and Realization of the Perfection of Dhyāna, Seventh, Part One”〔T1916 0508a20〕The chapter number agrees
Opening of the extant chapter「上已廣明內外方便,行者若能專心修習,繫念禪門,必有證驗,是故第七、廣明修證。」 tr. “Above, internal and external preparatory means have been extensively explained. If a practitioner can cultivate single-mindedly and bind recollection to the gate of dhyāna, there will necessarily be evidence of realization. Therefore the seventh extensively explains cultivation and realization”〔T1916 0508a21〕An extant body survives for Cultivation and Realization
Extant table of contents「釋禪波羅蜜修證第七,顯示禪波羅蜜果報第八」 tr. “Seventh, explaining cultivation and realization of the perfection of dhyāna; eighth, disclosing the fruition of the perfection of dhyāna”〔T1916 0475c21〕An eighth chapter on fruition is listed, but the extant text ends with the seventh
Conclusion of the distinction「修之與證雖似因果。 tr. “Although cultivation and realization resemble cause and result, they are only habituated cause and habituated result”〔T1912 0215a19〕; 「故云修名習行即是習因。 tr. “Thus cultivation is called habituated practice and is habituated cause; realization is called arising attainment and is habituated result. Both occur in the present life”〔T1912 0215a20〕; 「今論果報等者。 tr. “As for the fruition discussed here: since fruition occurs in a future life, it differs from the Dhyāna Gate”〔T1912 0215a21〕Present-life habituated cause and result are kept distinct from future-life fruition

Although the table of contents in the Shi Chan Boluomi Cidi Famen separately lists an eighth chapter on fruition, that chapter is absent from the extant text. A listed title cannot be used to fabricate content for the missing body.

The Scriptural Passage on the City of Many Fragrances

The treatise reads 「香城七重,橋津如畫,即其相也。」 tr. “The Fragrant City has seven walls, and its bridges and fords are like a painting: this is its appearance”〔T1911 0020a27〕. The Fuxing explicitly names the source and transmits an excerpt:

Verbatim wording in the FuxingLevel in the extant text
tr. “The Great Treatise says: travel east from here for five hundred yojanas; there is a great city named Many Fragrances”〔T1912 0214c24〕Indicates the City of Many Fragrances recorded in the Dazhidu Lun
tr. “Its city has seven kinds, is adorned with seven treasures, and has seven rows of trees. The city is two thousand yojanas long and wide. Its five hundred marketplaces and streets correspond; its seat is five li high and variously adorned”〔T1912 0214c25〕Excerpts the city’s appearance and Dharma seat
tr. “Bodhisattva Dharmodgata teaches prajñā three times each day. Hundreds of thousands of sentient beings hear prajñā and constantly make diligent offerings”〔T1912 0214c27〕Excerpts the scene of Dharma teaching and offerings

The principal points of the extant scriptural passage in the Dazhidu Lun are compared below. These are excerpts; the long passage on towers, railings, a moat of seven treasures, watchtowers, pools, and gardens remains in the Taishō fascicle and is not quoted in full here.

SceneVerbatim wording in the extant Dazhidu Lun
“Travel east from here for five hundred yojanas; there is a city named Many Fragrances. Its city has seven walls and is adorned with seven treasures”〔T1509 0734a22〕
Rows of trees「七寶行樹,周匝七重。」 tr. “Rows of trees of seven treasures encircle it in seven layers”〔T1509 0734a24〕
Extent, streets, and bridges「其城縱廣十二由旬,豐樂安靜,人民熾盛;五百市里,街巷相當,端嚴如畫,橋津如地,寬博清淨。」 tr. “The city is twelve yojanas long and wide, prosperous, joyful, and peaceful, with a flourishing population. Five hundred marketplaces and streets correspond; dignified like a painting, its bridges and fords are like level ground, broad and pure”〔T1509 0734a24〕
Conditions for fruition「是諸眾生宿業所致,長夜信樂深法,行般若波羅蜜因緣故,受是果報。」 tr. “This is brought about by these sentient beings’ past karma. Because through the long night they trusted and delighted in profound Dharma and practiced the perfection of wisdom, they receive this fruition”〔T1509 0734b12〕
Daily Dharma teaching「曇無竭菩薩與諸婇女遊戲娛樂已,日三時說般若波羅蜜。」 tr. “After Bodhisattva Dharmodgata has played and enjoyed himself with the women attendants, he teaches the perfection of wisdom three times each day”〔T1509 0734c03〕
Materials of the Dharma seat「其座四足,或以黃金、或以白銀、或以琉璃、或以頗梨」 tr. “The four legs of the seat are made variously of gold, silver, beryl, or crystal”〔T1509 0734c06〕
Height and breadth of the Dharma seat「座高五里,張白珠帳。」 tr. “The seat is five li high, with a white-pearl canopy spread above it”〔T1509 0734c09〕
Ascending the seat to teach「曇無竭菩薩於此座上說般若波羅蜜;」 tr. “Bodhisattva Dharmodgata teaches the perfection of wisdom from this seat”〔T1509 0734c11〕
Audience in the great assembly「於是大會百千萬眾」 tr. “In this great assembly are hundreds of thousands of myriads”〔T1509 0734c13〕

The parallel passage in the Larger Prajñāpāramitā is as follows:

SceneVerbatim wording in the extant Larger Prajñāpāramitā
“Travel east from here for five hundred yojanas; there is a city named Many Fragrances. Its city has seven walls and is adorned with seven treasures”〔T223 0417a07〕
Extent, streets, and bridges「其城縱廣十二由旬,豐樂安靜人民熾盛,五百市里街巷相當,端嚴如畫,橋津如地寬博清淨。」 tr. “The city is twelve yojanas long and wide, prosperous, joyful, and peaceful, with a flourishing population. Five hundred marketplaces and streets correspond; dignified like a painting, its bridges and fords are like level ground, broad and pure”〔T223 0417a10〕
Conditions for fruition「是諸眾生宿業果報,長夜信樂深法,行般若波羅蜜因緣故,受是果報。」 tr. “This is the fruition of these sentient beings’ past karma. Because through the long night they trusted and delighted in profound Dharma and practiced the perfection of wisdom, they receive this fruition”〔T223 0417a28〕

The wording differs across the three levels. Principal differences are recorded without adjudication: first, the treatise says “Fragrant City,” while the Fuxing and both extant texts say “Many Fragrances”; second, the treatise combines Fragrant City and seven walls, while the extant texts first name the city and then record its seven walls; third, the treatise says the bridges and fords are like a painting, while both extant texts say the city is dignified like a painting and its bridges and fords like level ground; fourth, the Fuxing reads “from this” and “there is a great city named,” while the extant texts read “from here” and “there is a city named”; fifth, the Taishō Fuxing reads two thousand yojanas, while its variants and both extant texts read twelve; sixth, the Taishō Fuxing reads seven kinds, a variant reads seven walls, and the extant texts separately give seven walls and seven rows of trees; seventh, the Fuxing reads one graph for “streets” and the extant texts another; seventh-b, the Dazhidu Lun says the line on past karma is “brought about by past karma,” while the Larger Prajñāpāramitā calls it “fruition of past karma”; seventh-c, punctuation within that line differs in detail and each text retains its own; eighth, the Fuxing says hundreds of thousands of sentient beings, while the extant Dazhidu Lun says hundreds of thousands of myriads.

The Dazhidu Lun Exchange

After citing the City of Many Fragrances, the Fuxing also excerpts the Dazhidu Lun exchange about the body manifested by Bodhisattva Dharmodgata. The six comparisons are as follows:

Excerpt in the FuxingExtant Dazhidu LunDifference
tr. “The treatise asks: Is Bodhisattva Dharmodgata a birth body or a transformation body?”〔T1912 0214c29〕「曇無竭菩薩為是生身? “Is Bodhisattva Dharmodgata a birth body? Is he a Dharma body that, in order to liberate sentient beings, creates this body through supernormal power?”〔T1509 0736a17〕Two questions differ from a three-level formulation
tr. “If it is a transformation body, why use sixty thousand women attendants, groves, and bathing pools for personal enjoyment?”〔T1912 0215a01〕「若化身者,何用六萬婇女、園觀、浴池種種莊嚴而自娛樂?」 tr. “If it is a transformation body, why use sixty thousand women attendants and the many adornments of parks and bathing pools for personal enjoyment?”〔T1509 0736a18〕The graphs for grove and park and other wording differ
tr. “Someone says: because he has attained the true mark of all dharmas and the power of samādhis and superknowledges, he wishes to liberate the sentient beings of this city”〔T1912 0215a04〕「有人言:是生身菩薩,得諸法實相及禪定神通力故,欲度是城中眾生。」 tr. “Someone says: he is a bodhisattva with a birth body who has attained the true mark of all dharmas and the powers of meditative concentration and superknowledge, and wishes to liberate the sentient beings of this city”〔T1509 0736a22〕The extant text explicitly says “bodhisattva with a birth body” and “meditative concentration”
“It is like lying in mud to escape heat and being as before after washing. Ordinary people’s faculties are dull and they cannot do this”〔T1912 0215a07〕「如人避熱故,在泥中臥,還洗則如故。 tr. “It is like a person lying in mud to escape heat and being as before after washing again. Because ordinary beings have dull faculties, they cannot do this”〔T1509 0736a25〕“Person” differs from “ordinary being,” and “faculties dull” from “dull faculties”
tr. “Although this is a birth body that has not left afflictions, he can cultivate every wholesome Dharma”〔T1912 0215a08〕「雖是生身,未離煩惱而能修行善法,為眾生故不盡結使。」 tr. “Although this is a birth body that has not left afflictions, he can cultivate wholesome dharmas and, for the sake of sentient beings, does not exhaust the bonds”〔T1509 0736b02〕“Cultivate every” differs from “cultivate,” and the concluding clause differs
tr. “Someone says: it is the Dharma body; if it were a birth body, how could it bring praise from the buddhas of the ten directions?”〔T1912 0215a09〕「有人言:是菩薩是法性生身,為度眾香城人故,變化而度。 “Someone says: this bodhisattva has a body born of Dharma-nature and transforms himself to liberate the people of the City of Many Fragrances. If it were a birth body, how could it bring praise from the buddhas of the ten directions?”〔T1509 0736b03〕The extant text says “body born of Dharma-nature” and first describes transformation for liberation

This exchange is a subsidiary discussion in the treatise transmitted by the Fuxing to explain the bodhisattva’s manifestation in the City of Many Fragrances. The Mohe Zhiguan itself draws only on the appearance of the Fragrant City and does not unfold this exchange about the body.

4. Essential Explanations from the Fuxing [the Mirror]

Zhanran first distinguishes the general and specific senses of fruition: 「言果報者在實報土。 tr. “To speak of fruition here is to locate it in the land of real reward. If one says ‘the unobstructed land of real reward,’ it necessarily lies beyond the land of skillful means with remainder. If one says only ‘fruition,’ the name remains general”〔T1912 0214c02〕. The treatise speaks only of the two extremes and the excellent and wondrous. tr. “Thus, in contrast to the lands of skillful means and common residence, they are called extremes. The real-reward land alone is called accord and wondrous. Therefore, all who have not broken ignorance and realized the Middle Way are called opposed”〔T1912 0214c06〕. It marks the stage boundary with 「初住已上法身所居。 tr. “Only the dwelling of the Dharma body from the first abode upward is called accord”〔T1912 0214c08〕 and 「唯有別圓初地初住獲妙果報。」 tr. “Only the first ground of the Separate Teaching and first abode of the Perfect Teaching attain wondrous fruition”〔T1912 0214c17〕. The four lands, teaching stages, and analysis through ignorance all belong to the mirror and are not written backward as lists made by the treatise itself.

For anticipatory result, the Fuxing says 「若破無明得無生忍。 tr. “If one breaks ignorance and attains patience with the non-arising of dharmas, yet has not left fragmentary birth and death, one has still not entered extinction; the land in which one dwells is called anticipatory result”〔T1912 0214c20〕. It explicitly enumerates the seven preparatory means as 「七方便者。 tr. “The seven preparatory means are humans, devas, the Two Vehicles, and bodhisattvas of the three teachings, with the Separate Teaching taking the stages before the grounds in the teaching path”〔T1912 0215a12〕. The treatise gives only the total number; the names and stage limits are Zhanran’s explanation. Comparison of the Fragrant City again shows that the treatise says the bridges and fords are like a painting while both extant texts say the city is dignified like a painting and the bridges and fords like level ground. The wording is recorded side by side without adjudication; the image of one level cannot replace the other’s verbatim phrase.

The treatise explicitly points to the later eighth Broad Chapter, but the Fuxing also preserves the boundary of the missing text: 「至大章第八應廣說之。 tr. “It should have been extensively explained in the eighth major chapter. Although the summer ended and, because conditions were lacking, it was not taught, what prevents the present passage from pointing provisionally to the later text? The later ninth and tenth pointers are the same”〔T1912 0215a14〕. The pointer is valid, but no extant body exists to be filled backward.

The final distinction preserves two meanings of “result.” tr. “Although cultivation and realization resemble cause and result, they are only habituated cause and habituated result”〔T1912 0215a19〕 and 「故云修名習行即是習因。 tr. “Thus cultivation is called habituated practice and is habituated cause; realization is called arising attainment and is habituated result. Both are in the present life”〔T1912 0215a20〕. The fruition here, however, is such that 「果報既在來世故與禪門不同。」 tr. “since fruition occurs in a future life, it differs from the Dhyāna Gate”〔T1912 0215a21〕. Regarding the Two Vehicles, he adds 「二乘但有習果等者。 tr. “‘The Two Vehicles have only habituated result’ distinguishes the Small and Great Vehicles. The term fruition does not apply to the Small”〔T1912 0215a22〕, concluding with 「小乘教不說二乘更有處。 tr. “The Small Vehicle teachings do not say that the Two Vehicles have another place. The expression ‘land of skillful means’ comes from the Great Teaching”〔T1912 0215a25〕. Present-life cultivation and realization and future-life realm-retribution cannot be merged merely because both use the word “result.”

5. Explanations of Various Masters

A passage-by-passage check of the unit’s anchor sentences and scene terms—fruition, anticipatory result, habituated result, realm-retribution, Many Fragrances, real reward, land of skillful means, and Middle Way—found no direct quotation or consecutive reception of this unit in T1936, the Siming Shiyi Shu, or T1937, the Siming Zunzhe Jiaoxing Lu. This clean result extends only to those two works and does not claim that all Song Tiantai literature lacks reception.

The Zhiguan Fuxing Souyao Ji in volume fifty-five of the Xuzangjing, X55n0919, directly compresses the commentary on this unit. It first receives the judgment that “fruition” is general while the present intent is specific, that the lands of skillful means and common residence are extremes, and that the real-reward land is wondrous〔0768c24–0769a03〕. It next receives anticipatory result, the seven preparatory means, and the list of humans, devas, Two Vehicles, and bodhisattvas of the three teachings〔0769a06–08〕. It closes by receiving the distinction that cultivation and realization are only habituated cause and result, while the fruition here lies across a future life〔0769a09–12〕. Its account follows the Fuxing and provides another witness to its transmission.

The Tiantai Zong Weijue (with Shiyi) in volume fifty-six of the Xuzangjing, X56n0942, cites the treatise and Fuxing to ask: since perfect-and-sudden correct contemplation of the Middle Way breaks ignorance and aims toward the Land of Eternally Quiescent Light, why does this passage take real reward as its aim〔0687c19–0688a01〕? The answer treats correlating the four teachings with four lands as a teaching-path explanation, then reconciles the two by calling the phenomenal land real reward and the principle Quiescent Light, adding that real reward takes the three contemplations as conditions〔0688a02–07〕. This is the position of a later inherited exchange. It is recorded side by side and not projected backward as the original meaning of Zhiyi or Zhanran.

6. Terminology

TermUse in the treatiseInterpretation in the FuxingLayering
Bringing Forth the Great FruitCalming-and-contemplation is taught to clarify the bodhisattva’s pure great fruition〔T1911 0020a24〕Classified within the Five Summaries as the result of one’s own practice〔T1912 0142a27〕“Result of one’s own practice” is Zhanran’s overall judgment
Fruition at the two extremesBrought forth by opposition to the Middle Way〔T1911 0020a25〕The lands of skillful means and common residence are called extremes; anyone who has not broken ignorance and realized the Middle Way is called opposed〔T1912 0214c06〕The four lands and stages are not poured downward into the base text
Excellent and wondrous fruitionBrought forth by accord with the Middle Way〔T1911 0020a25〕Real reward is called accord and wondrous, with the boundary separately marked from the first abode upward〔T1912 0214c06–09〕The stage boundary belongs to the mirror
Fragmentary birth and death; anticipatory resultSomething is attained before leaving fragmentary birth and death〔T1911 0020a26〕Not leaving fragmentary birth and death means still not entering extinction; the land in which one dwells is called anticipatory result〔T1912 0214c20–22〕No further details of body or land are added from outside
Seven preparatory meansThe treatise gives only the total〔T1911 0020a26〕Humans, devas, Two Vehicles, and bodhisattvas of the three teachings, with a limit to pre-ground stages of the Separate Teaching’s teaching path〔T1912 0215a12–13〕Names and stage limits belong to the mirror
Cultivation and realizationExplained in the Sequential Dharma Gate of Dhyāna〔T1911 0020a29〕Realization is attained through cultivation, and realization itself is a result〔T1912 0215a16–18〕This result is first habituated result
Habituated practice; arising attainmentCultivation is habituated practice and realization arising attainment〔T1911 0020b01〕They occupy the same level as habituated cause and result and both occur in the present life〔T1912 0215a20–21〕Arising attainment is not generalized into future fruition
Habituated cause; habituated resultAnother pair of names for cultivation and realization; both can be attained in this life〔T1911 0020b01–02〕Although resembling cause and result, they are only habituated cause and result〔T1912 0215a19〕Kept distinct from realm-retribution
Realm-retributionReceived across a future life〔T1911 0020b02〕Distinguished from present cultivation and realization only by fruition’s occurrence in a future life〔T1912 0215a21–22〕The meaning of “realm” is not expanded separately

7. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward

The Fragrant City is the unit’s only concrete image. Its seven walls, streets, bridges, and Dharma seat prevent anticipatory result from remaining only a name. Yet the treatise briefly says the bridges and fords are like a painting, while the extant texts say the city is dignified like a painting and its bridges and fords like level ground. The images can be read together, but their wording cannot be blended.

The Zhiguan Yili defines the function of this passage on fruition within Great Purport: 「大意雖有行及果報等文。 tr. “Although Great Purport has passages on practice, fruition, and the rest, they only indicate practice, fruition, and the rest so that beginning and end are known; this does not mean that these are themselves the marks of cultivation”〔T1913 0453a23〕. This is the boundary established by the Zhiguan Yili for the fruition passage in Great Purport.

The Zhiguan Dayi restates the Five Summaries as 「初略明中又開為五。 tr. “Within the initial summary, five are further opened: arouse the perfect mind, cultivate perfect practice, bring forth perfect fruition, raise the eight teachings, and return to the three virtues”〔T1914 0459b18〕. It also says 「感圓果者。 tr. “Bringing forth perfect fruition means that through the practices one enters the perfect stages. Proximally, the first abode is called patience with non-arising; remotely, wondrous awakening is called patience of quiescence and extinction”〔T1914 0459c19〕. This is a later synopsis carrying forward perfect fruition and may be cross-read with the unit and the stage boundaries in the Fuxing, but it is not the treatise’s original sentence.

The treatise identifies the eighth Broad Chapter as the place for later extensive explanation, but that chapter is absent from the extant text. Cross-reading can disclose its direction within the Ten Broad Chapters; it cannot assemble a lost chapter from later synopses or explanations in the mirror.

8. Placement of the Editions

This edition uses the Taishō-canon Mohe Zhiguan, T1911, as its base text. Page-column-line anchors identify the nearest line marker before the citation’s first graph, not the line on which its final graph occurs. This unit contains one collation note in the treatise:

LocationTaishō readingVariantTreatment
【A】Original graphs recorded side by side; not altered because the Fuxing separately uses the latter expression

The direct commentary in the Fuxing has four additional, directly relevant collation notes. They are recorded without adjudicating superiority:

LocationTaishō readingVariantRelevance
T1912 0214c02【Taishō】【Palace】First “proof and clarification”; first “direct clarification”
T1912 0214c25【Taishō】【Palace】Seven kinds; seven walls
【Palace】【A】The city’s extent; agrees with twelve yojanas in both extant texts
T1912 0215a24【Taishō】【Palace】“does not say there is a birth”; “does not say how it is born”

The notes preserve only visible differences. Agreement between a variant and an extant text does not authorize alteration of the Taishō reading; nor does the Fuxing’s phrasing adjudicate the treatise’s variant between “fruition” and “result-fruition.”
