心要Essence

The third scalpel treats envy. Begin with a dearly loved friend: on seeing that person’s prosperity, let “Ah, excellent!” give rise naturally to sympathetic joy.

Among the four scalpels, it is the most counterintuitive: when another person receives the thing you wanted, say once, completely, “That is wonderful.” Sympathetic joy rejoices in the other’s gain; joy rooted in home life says, “This gives me a share too.” The former is selfless, while the latter has a hook. The sequence, breaking the boundaries, and absorption follow goodwill; barren ground is as stated above.

§1 The Cultivation of Sympathetic Joy—Choosing the Object and Its Sequence 〔CSCD §260〕

A person beginning the cultivation of sympathetic joy (muditā) should likewise not begin with a dear person and the others. For a dear person does not become the proximate cause (padaṭṭhāna)¹ of sympathetic joy merely by being dear, much less do a neutral person and an enemy. A person of the opposite sex and a person who has died are simply barren ground (akhetta).

A dearly loved friend, however, can be the proximate cause—the person called an “intimate friend” (soṇḍasahāya) in the commentaries. Such a person is habitually joyful, laughing before speaking. Therefore, this person should first be pervaded with sympathetic joy. Alternatively, on seeing or hearing that a dear person is happy, splendidly dressed, and rejoicing, sympathetic joy should be aroused in this way: “This sentient being is truly joyful—excellent, how wonderful!” It is precisely with reference to this meaning that the Vibhaṅga says: “How does a bhikkhu dwell pervading one direction with a mind accompanied by sympathetic joy? Just as sympathetic joy arises on seeing a person who is dear and pleasing, so does the bhikkhu pervade all sentient beings with sympathetic joy.”

If that intimate friend or dear person was happy in the past but is now poor and wretched, the meditator should recollect the person’s past appearance of joy: “In the past this person had such great wealth and such a great following, and was always joyful.” Taking that past appearance of joy, sympathetic joy should be aroused. Or the meditator may think, “In the future this person will again gain such prosperity and travel upon an elephant’s back, a horse’s back, or in a golden palanquin.” Taking that future appearance of joy, sympathetic joy should be aroused.

After arousing sympathetic joy toward the dear person in this way, it should next be made to proceed toward a neutral person and then toward an enemy, in sequence, and absorption should be developed. If aversion toward the enemy arises as described earlier, it should be brought to an end by the method stated in the cultivation of goodwill.² Then, with equality of mind toward “these three persons and the meditator themself,” the meditator should accomplish breaking the boundaries among the four persons. By repeatedly practicing, cultivating, and making much of that sign, they should develop absorption solely through the three-and-four jhānas, by the method stated in the cultivation of goodwill.³ Thereafter, the following should be known by the method stated in the cultivation of goodwill: the transformation described as “unlimited pervasion in five modes, limited pervasion in seven modes, and pervasion by direction in ten modes,” and the benefits beginning with “the meditator sleeps happily.”

This is the detailed exposition of the cultivation of sympathetic joy.

Notes

¹ Proximate cause (padaṭṭhāna): the nearest cause for the arising of a quality; it is the fourth member of the fixed fourfold formula “characteristic, function, manifestation, proximate cause,” whose complete form appears in this chapter’s Miscellany Discussion.

² The methods for removing aversion, the sign of breaking the boundaries, absorption and the jhānas attained, the three kinds of pervasion, and the eleven benefits all appear in this chapter’s unit on goodwill. The present unit only refers back to them.

³ Absorption (appanā-samādhi, absorption concentration): concentration in which the mind fully enters its object and becomes unwavering, distinct from the access concentration (upacāra-samādhi) that precedes it.

義疏Exposition

The Third Scalpel: Treating Discontent (Envy)

The Big Picture — Sympathetic joy’s place among the four scalpels

The third of the four divine abodes is sympathetic joy (muditā, joy in another’s good fortune), which treats discontent (arati, envy arising at another’s gain). This unit is only one section long; what belongs distinctly to it is the initial object.

§01 The Method of Sympathetic Joy → Vernacular §1

Take a dearly loved friend as the initial object—the person the author calls an “intimate friend” (soṇḍasahāya). Seeing this person’s prosperity or hearing of their gain, the thought “Ah, excellent! How wonderful!” gives rise naturally to sympathetic joy. Sympathetic joy can likewise arise by recollecting a dear person’s former prosperity or future prosperity. A dear person cannot become the proximate cause of sympathetic joy merely by being dear. Thus the meditator begins either with an intimate friend, or with a dear person whose happiness and joy the meditator has seen or heard—the treatise explicitly lists both. From there, proceed in sequence through a dear person, a neutral person, and finally an enemy. A person of the opposite sex and a person who has died are simply barren ground. Breaking the boundaries, absorption, the three kinds of pervasion, and the benefits follow what was stated under goodwill.

For the General Reader

Among the four scalpels, sympathetic joy is the most counterintuitive in everyday life: when another person receives the thing you wanted, say once, completely, “That is wonderful.” Preserve the distinction from its near enemy (09-05 §4): sympathetic joy rejoices in the other person’s gain; joy rooted in home life is the excitement of “this gives me a share too.” The former is selfless; the latter has a hook.

To read this unit in full: Vernacular §1 is the complete paragraph-by-paragraph rendering of the sympathetic-joy passage.

〔CSCD §260〕Imameva hi atthavasaṃ paṭicca vibhaṅgevuttaṃ ''kathañca bhikkhu muditāsahagatena cetasā ekaṃ disaṃ pharitvā viharati? 663)
〔CSCD §260〕yo aṭṭhakathāyaṃ soṇḍasahāyoti vutto

I. Placement in the Outline

Base text This unit’s base is CSCD (internal, not for publication). Every Pāli passage in this layer is copied verbatim from the base in this unit’s source column. There is one form of location: 〔CSCD §NN〕, byte-verifiable against the base column. Every chapter-and-section entry in this chapter’s Overview movement table records position only and has no section number; this layer neither supplies nor extrapolates one, so no chapter-and-section locus is attached. This chapter has no in-house page-matched Pāli, so no page range is recorded.

Unit title The unit heading is ### Muditābhāvanākathā—the detailed discussion of the cultivation of sympathetic joy. Neither the chapter-title line nor the chapter’s own closing designation occurs in this unit.

Paragraph-number range The base column contains only 〔CSCD §260〕, so the entire unit is one paragraph and occupies 2,141 bytes, the second shortest of the chapter’s five units. There is no gap in paragraph numbering to record.

Subheadings The base column carries one ### subheading: the title of this unit.

Connections before and after The compassion unit precedes at 〔CSCD §259〕, and the equanimity unit follows at 〔CSCD §261〕. This unit closes with Ayaṃ muditābhāvanāya vitthārakathā., in the same form as the units before and after it with only the name of the practice changed. The method in this unit repeatedly attaches itself to the goodwill unit through vuttanayeneva (“by the method stated”). Measured in this unit, the expression occurs four times, each explicitly attached to goodwill.

II. Terms and Renderings

This heading records only how terms function and are located in this unit. The normative glossary governs their reading, and this heading does not decide terms not settled there. Readings already established in the goodwill unit are not re-explained: atippiyasahāyaka (dearly loved friend), majjhatta (neutral person), sīmāsambheda (breaking the boundaries), anodhisopharaṇā, odhisopharaṇā, and disāpharaṇā (the three kinds of pervasion), and tikacatukkajjhāna (three-and-four jhānas). The compassion unit established akhetta (barren ground). Only terms new to this unit are listed below.

PāliRenderingUsage in this unitLocus
muditāsympathetic joyThe practice cultivated in this unit; the meaning of the term is not explained here, but in the Miscellany Discussion. The normative glossary notes that it shares the Chinese rendering “joy” with pīti, so context must distinguish them〔CSCD §260〕
padaṭṭhānaproximate causeThe unit does not treat a dear person as the proximate cause of sympathetic joy: Na hi piyo piyabhāvamatteneva muditāya padaṭṭhānaṃ hoti—being dear alone is insufficient to constitute the proximate cause〔CSCD §260〕
soṇḍasahāyaintimate friendThe treatise cites the commentarial name and explains it: So hi muditamuditova hoti, paṭhamaṃ hasitvā pacchā katheti—a person who laughs before speaking〔CSCD §260〕
muditamuditahabitually joyfulReduplicated expression in the preceding sentence, used to explain the mark of the intimate friend〔CSCD §260〕
atītamuditākāra・anāgatamuditākārapast appearance of joy・future appearance of joyWhen the object is presently poor, sympathetic joy is aroused by taking their past or future appearance of happiness—an allowance unique to this unit and absent from the goodwill and compassion units〔CSCD §260〕
samacittatāequality of mindSign of breaking the boundaries: ''imesu ca tīsu attani cā''ti catūsu janesu samacittatāya sīmāsambhedaṃ katvā〔CSCD §260〕

III. Variant Readings

Scope of materials This unit has no in-house page-matched Pāli, so there is no collation block to record; the only searchable surface is the base column itself. The record does not adjudicate.

Measured complete survey A byte-level survey of the entire unit in the base column found zero occurrences of parenthetical variant markers such as (sī.), (syā.), (kaṃ.), and (pī.); zero occurrences of the variant-recitation marker pāṭho; and only one form of square-bracket annotation, the paragraph number [§NN]. The entire unit has only one parenthetical annotation, which identifies the source of a citation and records no variant. No variant form of the same word occurs either. No finding is recorded as none: the base column itself contains no record of a variant reading.

Boundary of the scan This survey reaches only the single surface of the base column; collation against other witnesses lies outside its scope, and this apparatus does not determine such readings independently.

IV. The Commentator’s Citations

Each self-citation by the author is attached to a paragraph-number anchor. A source is recorded only when the body identifies it itself; no source is determined independently.

LocationCitation Form 〔verbatim〕Essential Point CitedSource Identified by the Body
〔CSCD §260〕Imameva hi atthavasaṃ paṭicca vibhaṅgevuttaṃ ''kathañca bhikkhu muditāsahagatena cetasā ekaṃ disaṃ pharitvā viharati?sympathetic joy arises on seeing a dear and pleasing person, and in the same way all sentient beings are pervaded with sympathetic joy(vibha. 663)
〔CSCD §260〕yo aṭṭhakathāyaṃ soṇḍasahāyoti vuttosource of the designation “intimate friend”identified as a commentary, without naming the work or giving a number

Number of citation formulas, measured in this column The only citation labels are one occurrence of vibhaṅge and one of aṭṭhakathāyaṃ; the body identifies one source in a parenthetical annotation, containing one source item (vibha. 1). The referential formula vuttanayeneva (“by the method stated”) occurs four times. These counts apply only within this unit, not to the work as a whole.

One observation on the order of citation The citation in this unit occupies a different position from that in the compassion unit. The compassion unit first cites the canonical passage and then determines its object; this unit first establishes the intimate friend as object and only then uses Imameva hi atthavasaṃ paṭicca (“precisely with reference to this meaning”) to cite the canonical passage as evidence. The fact is recorded without adjudication.

V. Similes and Rhetoric

This heading records only where the unit’s similes occur and what they illustrate; it offers no literary evaluation.

A. Simile This unit establishes no simile of its own: viya and its enclitic forms have zero occurrences, making this the only one of the chapter’s five units with none. Only the quoted canonical passage carries the formula Seyyathāpi (one occurrence); its comparison is simply “seeing a dear and pleasing person,” not a simile created by this unit.

B. List of objects Instead of a simile, the unit gives a concrete picture, verbatim as hatthikkhandhaassapiṭṭhisuvaṇṇasivikādīhi vicarissatī—traveling upon an elephant’s back, a horse’s back, or in a golden palanquin. This is the object taken as a future appearance of joy. Its location is recorded without evaluation.

C. Verifiable observations on rhetoric First, this unit has the same form as the compassion unit: it explains what differs and refers to what is shared through vuttanayeneva (four occurrences). Only two matters are explained in detail—the distinction that a dear person is not the proximate cause merely by being dear, and the allowance of past and future appearances of joy. Second, Seyyathāpi occurs once, within the quoted canonical passage. Third, both abbreviations and verses have zero occurrences, and there are no indented lines. Fourth, the lowercase form muditā occurs eleven times and mettā three times; every occurrence of the latter is in a referential phrase. Fifth, this unit occupies 2,141 bytes, the fourth largest of the chapter’s five units. Combined with the equanimity unit (1,481 bytes), it is still not twice the length of the compassion unit (3,514 bytes). All these counts were measured only within this unit and make no claim about the work as a whole.

VI. Intratextual Cross-Reading

Each connection carries a paragraph-number anchor. The place identified is based only on terms verifiable in the text of this unit. The mapping between this unit’s paragraph numbers and the chapter-and-section system is unknown, so the places referred to carry no chapter-and-section loci, and none are estimated or converted. No identification is made independently.
