Visuddhimagga · Ten Kinds of Supernormal Power

〔CSCD §369–379〕
心要Essence

“Supernormal power” is first explained in three senses: success, completeness of means, and the flourishing of sentient beings through it. Then it opens into ten kinds: determination (one becoming many), transformation (abandoning the original form and displaying another), mind-made (another body issuing from this body), pervasion of knowledge, pervasion of concentration, noble, born of kamma-result, of the meritorious, made by knowledge-spells, and conditioned by right application.

The two middle kinds are established through accounts. Pervasion of knowledge: Bākula in a fish’s belly, Saṅkicca on the cremation pyre, Bhūtapāla through three watches outside the city—the path knowledge they would attain already pervaded the earlier portion of their lives. Pervasion of concentration: Sāriputta unharmed by a yakkha’s blow, Sañjīva’s robe unburned in the attainment of cessation, Stump Koṇḍañña covered by the goods of five hundred thieves, hot oil rolling off Uttarā like water on a lotus leaf, the poisoned arrow that Sāmāvatī’s king could not release. Harm does not reach a person in concentration. Noble supernormal power neither flies nor transforms; it is simply the ability to turn perception at will toward repulsive and desirable objects, using loving-kindness, attention to elements, foulness, and impermanence.

The last four stretch the word to its broadest sense: the flight of birds, merit, spells, and crafts are all successes. Then the scope contracts again: “supernormal power” in the scriptural passage refers only to determination, together with transformation and mind-made—the following four units practice only these three.

§1 The Meaning of Supernormal Power and the List of Ten Kinds 〔CSCD §369〕

Discussion of the Ten Kinds of Supernormal Power

“He directs and inclines the mind toward supernormal power”—here, supernormal power is so called in the sense of success, and also in the senses of accomplishment and attainment. For whatever is accomplished and attained is said to “succeed.” As it is said: “For one who desires what is desired, it succeeds.” Likewise: “Renunciation succeeds, and so it is supernormal power; it dispels, and so it is guidance¹. The arahant path succeeds, and so it is supernormal power; it dispels, and so it is guidance.”

Another method: supernormal power in the sense of success is a designation for “the completeness of means.” For the completeness of means succeeds by producing the desired result. As it is said: “This householder Citta is virtuous and possessed of wholesome qualities. If he were to make the aspiration, ‘May I become a Wheel-Turning Monarch in a future life,’ it would succeed for him, since the aspiration of one who is virtuous is pure.”

Another method: sentient beings succeed through it, and therefore it is supernormal power. “Succeed” means become prosperous, flourishing, and supreme. It is tenfold. As it is said: “How many kinds of supernormal power are there? There are ten kinds.” And further: “What ten? Supernormal power by determination, by transformation, by the mind-made, by the pervasion² of knowledge, by the pervasion of concentration, noble supernormal power, supernormal power born of kamma-result, the supernormal power of the meritorious, supernormal power made by knowledge-spells, and supernormal power in the sense of success conditioned by right application in the various fields.”

§2 Supernormal Power by Determination, Transformation, and the Mind-Made 〔CSCD §370–372〕

Here, “originally one, he adverts to being many—a hundred, a thousand, or a hundred thousand; after adverting he determines with knowledge, ‘May I become many’”—the supernormal power distinguished and shown in this way is called supernormal power by determination³ because it is accomplished through determination.

“He abandons his original form and displays the form of a boy, or the form of a nāga … up to (expanded as before) … and displays various arrays of troops”—the supernormal power handed down in this way is called supernormal power by transformation⁴ because it proceeds through alteration that abandons the original form.

“Here a bhikkhu produces from this body another body, material and mind-made”—the supernormal power handed down according to this method is called mind-made supernormal power because it proceeds by accomplishing another mind-made body within the body.

§3 Supernormal Power by the Pervasion of Knowledge and the Accounts of Three Elders 〔CSCD §373〕

An excellence produced through the power of knowledge before knowledge arises, afterward, or at the very moment of its arising is called supernormal power by the pervasion of knowledge. This has been said: “Through contemplation of impermanence⁵, it succeeds in the sense that perception of permanence is abandoned, and so it is supernormal power by the pervasion of knowledge … up to (expanded as before) … through the arahant path, it succeeds in the sense that all defilements are abandoned, and so it is supernormal power by the pervasion of knowledge. The Venerable Bākula’s supernormal power by the pervasion of knowledge; the Venerable Saṅkicca’s; the Venerable Bhūtapāla’s.”

Here, when the Venerable Bākula was still an infant, he was bathed in the river on an auspicious day and fell into the current through his nurse’s negligence. A fish swallowed him and swam to the landing at Benares. There fishermen caught the fish and sold it to a merchant’s wife. She became fond of the fish, thought, “I shall cook it myself,” and when she cut it open saw in its belly an infant like a golden image. Thinking, “I have gained a son,” she became delighted. His remaining unharmed in the fish’s belly in this way is called supernormal power by the pervasion of knowledge, because it was produced through the power of the knowledge of the arahant path that the Venerable Bākula, one in his final existence⁶, would attain in that very individual existence. This account should be related in detail.

When the Elder Saṅkicca was still in his mother’s womb, his mother died. She was laid on a funeral pyre, pierced with stakes, and burned; the point of a stake struck the corner of the infant’s eye and he made a sound. Thinking, “The infant is still alive,” people took her down, opened the abdomen, and gave the child to his grandmother. Raised by her, he went forth when grown and attained arahantship together with the discriminations⁷. His remaining unharmed on the pile of firewood in the manner described is called the Venerable Saṅkicca’s supernormal power by the pervasion of knowledge.

The father of the boy Bhūtapāla was a poor man in Rājagaha. He entered the forest in a cart for firewood, made up a cartload, and arrived near the city gate in the evening. Then his oxen slipped their yokes and entered the city. Seating his young son beside the cart, he followed the oxen into the city. Before he returned, the city gate was closed. The child’s remaining unharmed outside the city through the three watches of the night in a place frequented by wild beasts and yakkhas is called supernormal power by the pervasion of knowledge, in the manner described. This account too should be related in detail.

§4 Supernormal Power by the Pervasion of Concentration and the Accounts of Five People 〔CSCD §374〕

An excellence produced through the power of serenity before concentration, afterward, or at the very moment of its arising is supernormal power by the pervasion of concentration. This has been said: “Through the first jhāna, it succeeds in the sense that the hindrances are abandoned, and so it is supernormal power by the pervasion of concentration … up to (expanded as before) … through attainment of the base of neither perception nor non-perception⁸, it succeeds in the sense that perception of the base of nothingness is abandoned, and so it is supernormal power by the pervasion of concentration. The Venerable Sāriputta’s supernormal power by the pervasion of concentration; the Venerable Sañjīva’s; the Venerable Stump Koṇḍañña’s; the laywoman Uttarā’s; the laywoman Sāmāvatī’s.”

Here, when the Venerable Sāriputta was dwelling with the Elder Mahāmoggallāna at Pigeon Cave, sitting in the open on a moonlit night with his head newly shaved, a malicious yakkha struck him on the head despite the dissuasion of a companion yakkha. The blow sounded like a thunderclap. At the time the blow landed the elder had entered attainment, and he therefore suffered no illness from it. This was that venerable one’s supernormal power by the pervasion of concentration. The account is handed down in the Udāna.

The Elder Sañjīva entered the attainment of cessation⁹. Cowherds and others thought he had died, gathered grass, firewood, and cow dung, and set them alight. Not even one thread of the elder’s robe was burned. Because this was produced through the power of serenity proceeding from successive attainment, it was his supernormal power by the pervasion of concentration. The account is handed down in a discourse.

The Elder Stump Koṇḍañña frequently entered attainment. One night he entered attainment and sat in a certain forest. Five hundred thieves, carrying stolen goods, thought, “No one is following us now,” and decided to rest, so they put down their goods. Thinking that the elder was a stump, they placed all the goods upon him. When they had rested and were about to leave, the elder emerged from attainment at the time he had determined just as they picked up the first article. Seeing him move, they were frightened and cried out. The elder said, “Lay followers, do not be afraid. I am a bhikkhu.” They approached, paid homage, and out of the confidence that arose toward the elder went forth and attained arahantship together with the discriminations. Here the elder’s remaining unharmed while covered by five hundred loads of goods was supernormal power by the pervasion of concentration.

The laywoman Uttarā was the daughter of the merchant Puṇṇa. A courtesan named Sirimā, driven by jealousy, poured a pot of hot oil over her head. At that very moment Uttarā entered loving-kindness. The oil rolled off like drops of water on a lotus leaf. This was her supernormal power by the pervasion of concentration. The account should be related in detail.

Sāmāvatī was King Udena’s chief queen. The brahmin Māgaṇḍiya desired the position of chief queen for his own daughter, so he had a poisonous snake placed in Sāmāvatī’s lute and told the king: “Great King, Sāmāvatī wants to kill you; she carries a poisonous snake in her lute.” The king saw it and became angry. Thinking, “I shall kill Sāmāvatī,” he drew his bow and fitted a poisoned arrow. Sāmāvatī and her retinue pervaded the king with loving-kindness. The king could neither release the arrow nor lower the bow, but stood trembling. Then the queen said to him, “Great King, are you suffering?” “Yes, I am suffering.” “Then lower the bow.” The arrow fell at the king’s feet. The queen then instructed him: “Great King, one should not harm those who have done no wrong.” The king’s inability to release the arrow in this way was the laywoman Sāmāvatī’s supernormal power by the pervasion of concentration.

§5 Noble Supernormal Power—Dwelling with the Perception of the Unrepulsive 〔CSCD §375〕

Dwelling with the perception of the unrepulsive in the repulsive and so forth is called noble supernormal power. As it is said: “What is noble supernormal power? Here, if a bhikkhu wishes, ‘May I dwell with the perception of the unrepulsive in the repulsive,’ he dwells therein with the perception of the unrepulsive … up to (expanded as before) … he dwells therein equanimous, mindful, and clearly comprehending.” Because this occurs only in noble ones who have gained mastery of mind, it is called noble supernormal power.

For a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed¹⁰ and who possesses it pervades a repulsive, undesirable object with loving-kindness¹¹ or attends to it as elements, and dwells with the perception of the unrepulsive. He pervades an unrepulsive, desirable object with foulness or attends to it as “impermanent,” and dwells with the perception of the repulsive. Likewise, with both the repulsive and the unrepulsive present, he performs that same pervasion with loving-kindness or attention to elements and dwells with the perception of the unrepulsive; with both the unrepulsive and the repulsive present, he performs that same pervasion with foulness or attention as “impermanent” and dwells with the perception of the repulsive. Or he brings forth the six-factored equanimity¹² taught according to the method beginning “on seeing a visible form with the eye, he is neither pleased,” avoids both repulsive and unrepulsive, and dwells equanimous, mindful, and clearly comprehending. In the Paṭisambhidāmagga this same meaning is distinguished according to the method beginning: “How does he dwell with the perception of the unrepulsive in the repulsive? He pervades the undesirable object with loving-kindness, or compares it by way of the elements.” Because this occurs only in noble ones who have gained mastery of mind, it is called noble supernormal power.

§6 Supernormal Power Born of Kamma-Result and the Supernormal Power of the Meritorious 〔CSCD §376–377〕

The traveling of birds and the rest through the air is called supernormal power born of kamma-result. As it is said: “What is supernormal power born of kamma-result? That of all birds, all deities, some human beings, and some beings fallen into bad destinations¹³—this is supernormal power born of kamma-result.” For all birds travel through the sky without waiting for jhāna or insight; so do all deities and some first-aeon people¹⁴. Likewise, the traveling through the air of certain beings fallen into bad destinations, such as the yakkhinī Piyaṅkaramātā, Uttaramātā, Phussamittā, and Dhammaguttā, is supernormal power born of kamma-result.

The traveling of a Wheel-Turning Monarch and the rest through the air is called the supernormal power of the meritorious. As it is said: “What is the supernormal power of the meritorious? A Wheel-Turning Monarch travels through the air together with the fourfold army, including even the grooms and cattle tenders. The householder Jotika’s supernormal power of the meritorious; the householder Jaṭila’s; the householder Ghosita’s; the householder Meṇḍaka’s; the supernormal power of the meritorious of the five people of great merit.” In brief, an excellence produced when the accumulation of merit reaches maturity is the supernormal power of the meritorious.

Here, the householder Jotika’s jewel palace broke through the earth and rose up, together with sixty-four wishing trees; this was his supernormal power of the meritorious. Jaṭila’s golden mountain, eighty cubits high, appeared. Ghosita remained unharmed though attempts were made to kill him in seven places; this was [his] supernormal power of the meritorious. For Meṇḍaka, sheep made of the seven precious substances appeared over a field measuring one karīsa; this was [his] supernormal power of the meritorious. The five people of great merit were the merchant Meṇḍaka, his wife Candapadumasirī, his son the merchant Dhanañjaya, his daughter-in-law Sumanadevī, and his servant Puṇṇa. When the merchant had washed his head and looked up at the sky, red rice sufficient to fill twelve thousand five hundred granaries descended from the sky. His wife took only one nāḷi measure of rice and fed all the inhabitants of Jambudīpa, yet the rice did not run out. His son took a purse containing a thousand [coins] and gave to all the inhabitants of Jambudīpa, yet the kahāpaṇas did not run out. His daughter-in-law took a single āḷhaka of grain and distributed it to all the inhabitants of Jambudīpa, yet the grain did not run out. When the servant plowed with one plow, seven furrows appeared on this side and seven on the other, fourteen furrows in all. This was their supernormal power of the meritorious.

§7 Supernormal Power Made by Knowledge-Spells, Supernormal Power Conditioned by Right Application, and the Conclusion of the Ten 〔CSCD §378–379〕

The traveling through the air of knowledge-spell bearers¹⁵ and the rest is supernormal power made by knowledge-spells. As it is said: “What is supernormal power made by knowledge-spells? Knowledge-spell bearers recite a knowledge-spell and travel through the air. In the sky, in the firmament, they display elephants … up to (expanded as before) … and display various arrays of troops.”

The success of one kind of work through one kind of right application or another is supernormal power in the sense of success conditioned by right application in the various fields. As it is said: “Through renunciation it succeeds in the sense that sensual desire is abandoned, and so it is supernormal power in the sense of success conditioned by right application in the various fields … up to (expanded as before) … through the arahant path it succeeds in the sense that all defilements are abandoned, and so it is supernormal power in the sense of success conditioned by right application in the various fields.” Because the right application called the course of practice is being shown here, the canonical passage handed down is the same as the preceding canonical passage. But the commentaries¹⁶ hand it down thus: the excellence produced by performing one kind of work or another—any craft, any medical work, the learning of the three Vedas, the learning of the Three Piṭakas¹⁷, even farming and the rest included—through such things as arranging carts is supernormal power in the sense of success conditioned by right application in the various fields.

Thus, among these ten kinds of supernormal power, only supernormal power by determination is handed down in the word “supernormal power” [of the scriptural passage]. But in the present meaning, supernormal power by transformation and mind-made supernormal power should also be included.

Notes

¹ Guidance (pāṭihāriya): a term set beside “supernormal power” (iddhi) in the same sentence, explained by the treatise as “what dispels.” Later in this chapter, however, “the Twin Marvel” follows an established Chinese designation; one term has two usages.

² Pervasion (vipphāra): an excellence produced within the range of the power of knowledge or concentration, distinct from “pervading” (pharaṇa), which describes meditation subjects such as loving-kindness pervading their objects.

³ Determination (adhiṭṭhāna): establishing with knowledge the resolve “May I become thus.” The detailed method for supernormal power by determination appears in this chapter’s unit “Having Been One, Becoming Many, and Visibility and Invisibility.”

⁴ Transformation (vikubbanā): abandoning the original form and displaying another. The methods for supernormal power by transformation and mind-made supernormal power appear in this chapter’s final unit, “Mastery of the Body through the Brahmā World.”

⁵ Contemplation of impermanence (aniccānupassanā): contemplation that sees formations as impermanent; this unit presents it as what abandons the perception of permanence.

⁶ One in the final existence (pacchimabhavika): one for whom this life is the final existence and who will necessarily attain arahantship in this very life.

⁷ Discriminations (paṭisambhidā): the four unobstructed knowledges—discrimination of meaning, of phenomena, of language, and of perspicuity.

⁸ Attainment (samāpatti): a meditative attainment accomplished by entering concentration; the four jhānas and four immaterial states together are the eight attainments.

⁹ Attainment of cessation (nirodhasamāpatti): an attainment without mind, in which perception and feeling cease; its full treatment appears in this work’s chapter on the benefits of developing wisdom.

¹⁰ Bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed (khīṇāsava): a bhikkhu whose taints have been destroyed, that is, an arahant.

¹¹ Pervasion with loving-kindness and attention to elements: the method of the former appears in this work’s chapter on the divine abodes; the latter appears in the unit on defining the four elements in the chapter explaining concentration.

¹² Six-factored equanimity (chaḷaṅgupekkhā): equanimity unmoved by either agreeable or disagreeable objects occurring at the six doors; the term appears in this work’s chapter on the six recollections.

¹³ Being fallen into a bad destination (vinipātika): a sentient being fallen into a bad destination; this unit gives yakkhinīs and others as examples.

¹⁴ First-aeon people (paṭhamakappika): people at the beginning of an aeon; one class of human beings with supernormal power born of kamma-result, who can also travel through the air.

¹⁵ Knowledge-spell bearer (vijjādhara): one who recites and retains knowledge-spells, the practitioner of supernormal power made by knowledge-spells.

¹⁶ Commentary (aṭṭhakathā): a general designation for commentaries on the canonical text; here the Commentator explicitly marks this account as coming from the commentaries rather than the canonical text.

¹⁷ Learning of the three Vedas and learning of the Three Piṭakas: examples of right application given by the commentaries under the tenth kind of supernormal power, listed beside crafts, medicine, and even farming.

義疏Exposition

“Supernormal power” is first explained in three senses—success, completeness of means, and the flourishing of beings through it—then opened into ten kinds: determination, transformation, mind-made, pervasion of knowledge, pervasion of concentration, noble, born of kamma-result, of the meritorious, made by knowledge-spells, and right application; the scriptural term refers only to determination, though transformation and mind-made are also to be included

The Big Picture — The Classification of Ten Kinds of Supernormal Power

The scriptural phrase “he directs and inclines the mind toward supernormal power” is opened here. This unit does one thing: classification. It first explains the meaning of “supernormal power” (§1), then lists ten kinds from the Paṭisambhidāmagga, defining each and relating examples (§§2–7). Of the ten, the first three (determination, transformation, and mind-made) are practiced in the following four units of this chapter. The next two (pervasion of knowledge and pervasion of concentration) are excellences born through knowledge or concentration, illustrated by three elders and five people. Noble supernormal power belongs only to noble ones. The last four (born of kamma-result, of the meritorious, made by knowledge-spells, and right application) do not require jhāna or insight. The final sentence closes the classification: “supernormal power” in the scriptural passage refers only to determination, but transformation and mind-made are also included in this meaning (§7). The point to watch is how the Commentator expands “supernormal power” from the narrow sense of an extraordinary ability to the broad sense that “every success is supernormal power,” and then draws it back again. 〔Observation〕

§01 The Meaning of Supernormal Power and the List of Ten Kinds → Vernacular §1

Three meanings: success (what is accomplished and attained is said to succeed—“renunciation succeeds, and so it is supernormal power; it dispels, and so it is guidance; the arahant path succeeds, and so it is supernormal power”); completeness of means (what produces the desired result—the virtuous householder Citta’s aspiration is pure, so if he aspires to be a Wheel-Turning Monarch the aspiration succeeds); and the success of sentient beings through it (becoming prosperous, flourishing, and supreme). The ten kinds are determination, transformation, mind-made, pervasion of knowledge, pervasion of concentration, noble, born of kamma-result, of the meritorious, made by knowledge-spells, and supernormal power in the sense of success conditioned by right application in the various fields (vernacular §1). 〔Reading〕 Each meaning is broader than the last: success (event) → means (cause) → a being’s flourishing (result). In the citation “supernormal power” and “guidance” stand side by side. This edition reads them separately: supernormal power is success, guidance is what dispels another’s wrong adherence. Later in the chapter “Twin Marvel” follows an established Chinese name; one term has two usages.

§02 Supernormal Power by Determination, Transformation, and the Mind-Made → Vernacular §2

Supernormal power by determination: after adverting to many (hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands), one determines with knowledge, “May I become many”—accomplished through determination. Supernormal power by transformation: abandoning one’s original material form, one displays the form of a boy, a nāga, or arrays of troops—proceeding through the alteration of abandoning the original form. Mind-made supernormal power: from this body one produces another body that is material and mind-made—accomplishing another mind-made body within the body (vernacular §2). 〔Reading〕 The difference between all three lies in the “body”: determination—the body remains mine but becomes many; transformation—the body remains mine but changes form; mind-made—a separate body issues from the body. The following four units develop all three, and the last unit specifically distinguishes transformation from mind-made. “Material form” here follows the “form” of the final unit in its visible-form usage; one term has two functions.

§03 Supernormal Power by the Pervasion of Knowledge and the Accounts of Three Elders → Vernacular §3

An excellence born through the power of knowledge (before, after, or at its arising): “Through contemplation of impermanence, perception of permanence is abandoned … through the arahant path, all defilements are abandoned.” Three accounts: Bākula, swallowed by a fish after falling into the river as an infant, carried to Benares, and found like a golden image when a merchant’s wife cut the fish open—unharmed in the fish’s belly through the power of the arahant-path knowledge that he, one in his final existence, would attain; Saṅkicca, still in the womb when his mother died, heard crying when a stake touched the corner of his eye during cremation, rescued from her opened abdomen, later gone forth and attaining arahantship—unharmed on the pyre; Bhūtapāla, left as a boy outside the city and unharmed through the three watches of night in a place frequented by wild beasts and yakkhas (vernacular §3). 〔Reading〕 All three say, “Before knowledge has arrived, it is already protecting him.” This is what “pervasion” means here: the power of the arahant-path knowledge to be attained in that life has already spread through the earlier portion of the body. This edition follows the established “pervasion” of the aggregates chapter and keeps it distinct from the “pervading” used for such meditation subjects as loving-kindness.

§04 Supernormal Power by the Pervasion of Concentration and the Accounts of Five People → Vernacular §4

An excellence born through the power of serenity: “Through the first jhāna, the hindrances are abandoned … through the base of neither perception nor non-perception, perception of the base of nothingness is abandoned.” Five accounts: Sāriputta, sitting with a freshly shaved head in the open at Pigeon Cave, struck by a malicious yakkha with a blow sounding like thunder but unharmed because he was in attainment (the Udāna); Sañjīva, mistaken for dead while in the attainment of cessation and burned by cowherds, yet not a thread of his robe burned; Stump Koṇḍañña, in attainment in a forest and covered with the goods of five hundred thieves who thought him a stump, then emerging, whereupon the frightened thieves went forth and attained arahantship; the laywoman Uttarā, doused by the jealous courtesan Sirimā with hot oil, entering loving-kindness at that instant so the oil rolled off like water on a lotus leaf; and Queen Sāmāvatī, falsely accused of hiding a snake in a lute, pervading the king with loving-kindness so he could neither release nor lower his poisoned arrow until it fell at his feet, whereupon she instructed him (vernacular §4). 〔Reading〕 The five accounts have one structure: external harm does not reach the person in concentration. The accounts of the two laywomen are especially striking: what they use is loving-kindness—loving-kindness is concentration, and the pervasion of concentration makes no distinction between monastic and lay.

§05 Noble Supernormal Power—Dwelling with the Perception of the Unrepulsive → Vernacular §5

Dwelling with the perception of the unrepulsive in the repulsive and so forth belongs only to noble ones who have mastery of mind. A bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed pervades a repulsive, undesirable object with loving-kindness or attends to it as elements and dwells with the perception of the unrepulsive; pervades an unrepulsive, desirable object with foulness or attends to it as impermanent and dwells with the perception of the repulsive; does one of the same with both together and dwells in one perception; or, through the six-factored equanimity beginning “on seeing a visible form with the eye, he is not pleased,” avoids both and dwells equanimous, mindful, and clearly comprehending. The Paṭisambhidāmagga gives the same account (vernacular §5). 〔Reading〕 This is mastery over five perceptions: one can remain unrepelled by the ugly, repelled by the beautiful, or take neither side. The four instruments are loving-kindness, attention to elements, foulness, and impermanence—all meditation subjects. Noble supernormal power neither flies nor transforms; the mind turns at will toward its object. The Commentator calls it “noble” because only one with mastery of mind can do it.

§06 Supernormal Power Born of Kamma-Result and the Supernormal Power of the Meritorious → Vernacular §6

Born of kamma-result: birds, deities, some people of the first aeon, and some beings fallen into bad destinations (such as Piyaṅkaramātā the yakkhinī) travel through the air without jhāna or insight. Of the meritorious: a Wheel-Turning Monarch and fourfold army travel through the air, including grooms and cattle tenders; the householder Jotika’s jewel palace breaks through the earth with sixty-four wishing trees; Jaṭila’s eighty-cubit golden mountain; Ghosita remains unharmed through seven attempts to kill him; Meṇḍaka’s sheep made of seven precious substances; the five people of great merit—Meṇḍaka looks up and rice for twelve thousand five hundred granaries falls from the sky, his wife’s single measure of rice feeds all Jambudīpa without exhaustion, his son’s thousand-coin purse never empties, his daughter-in-law’s single measure of grain never runs out, and his servant’s one plow produces fourteen furrows—excellences produced when the accumulation of merit matures (vernacular §6). 〔Reading〕 These two kinds stretch “supernormal power” to its broadest sense: a bird flying is supernormal power, and the ripening of merit is supernormal power. The Commentator lists them not so they will be sought, but to define the term: every “success” may be called supernormal power—before he draws it back to the scriptural meaning.

§07 Supernormal Power Made by Knowledge-Spells, Conditioned by Right Application, and the Conclusion of the Ten → Vernacular §7

Made by knowledge-spells: knowledge-spell bearers recite spells, travel through the air, and display elephants and arrays of troops. Conditioned by right application: “Through renunciation, sensual desire is abandoned … through the arahant path, all defilements are abandoned”—the canonical passage is the same as before; the commentaries broaden it to arranging carts, crafts, medicine, the three Vedas, the Three Piṭakas, and even farming, every excellence born from doing some work. Conclusion: of the ten, the scriptural word “supernormal power” refers only to determination; yet transformation and mind-made are also included in this meaning (vernacular §7). 〔Reading〕 The last sentence is the destination of the whole unit: after listing ten kinds, only one—determination—is meant in the scriptural passage, expanded to three by transformation and mind-made. The other seven complete the term’s range. The following four units practice only these three. 〔Observation〕

For the General Reader

This unit is like a dictionary entry with ten senses under “supernormal power.” You need not memorize all ten; retain three levels. Narrowest: supernormal power by determination as meant in the scriptural passage (becoming many after being one and so forth, practiced in the next four units). Middle: excellences born of knowledge, concentration, and a noble mind (the accounts of three elders and five people, and dwelling with the perception of the unrepulsive). Broadest: every success is supernormal power (the flight of birds, merit, spells, and crafts). Read the eight accounts simply as accounts: the infant in a fish’s belly, the infant on a pyre, the elder mistaken for a stump, hot oil like water, the poisoned arrow that would not fly—each says the same thing: harm does not reach a person furnished with knowledge and concentration.

To read this unit in full: vernacular §1–§7 is the complete paragraph-by-paragraph rendering of the three meanings of supernormal power, the list of ten kinds, the explanation of the first three, the accounts of three elders under the pervasion of knowledge, the accounts of five people under the pervasion of concentration, noble supernormal power, the accounts of powers born of kamma-result and of the meritorious, powers made by knowledge-spells and conditioned by right application, and the conclusion of the ten.

I. Placement in the Outline

Base text The base text for this unit is CSCD (internal use, not mounted on the site). Every Pāli form in this layer is taken verbatim from this unit’s source-column base. It uses one location form: 〔CSCD §NN〕, verifiable word for word against the base-text column. This chapter has no in-house Pāli collated to pages, so page domains are not recorded.

Title of the discussion The first line of this unit’s segment is ### Dasaiddhikathā (a direct measurement here finds one ### line in the unit). This single discussion occupies 38,189 characters in the base text, more than half the chapter, and is therefore divided into four according to its internal structure; this unit is the first division. The following three divisions (12-03, 12-04, and 12-05) have no ### discussion title of their own and inherit this line.

Paragraph-number domain The source-column paragraph numbers run from 〔CSCD §369〕 through 〔CSCD §379〕, with 11 paragraph numbers actually present, continuous and without a gap. The span of this unit in the base-text column is 13,121 bytes.

Structure of the discussion—one of the ten powers in each paragraph The spine of the unit is the individual treatment of ten kinds of supernormal power. 〔CSCD §369〕 gives three meanings of iddhi and the list of ten (citing the questions and answers of the Paṭisambhidāmagga); then each paragraph from 〔CSCD §370〕 through 〔CSCD §379〕 presents exactly one kind—determination, transformation, mind-made, pervasion of knowledge, pervasion of concentration, noble, born of kamma-result, of the meritorious, made by knowledge-spells, and success conditioned by right application in the various fields. Ten paragraphs and ten kinds: no paragraph contains two, and no kind extends beyond its paragraph (checked paragraph by paragraph here). The end draws them together in one sentence: Iti imāsu dasasu iddhīsu iddhividhāyāti imasmiṃ pade adhiṭṭhānā iddhiyeva āgatā.the Commentator himself marks that the scriptural sentence of this chapter directly designates only the first kind, though transformation and mind-made are also to be included.

Preceding and following joints The first unit of the same chapter precedes it: this unit begins Iddhividhāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmetīti ettha ijjhanaṭṭhena iddhicontinuing word for word the scriptural passage explained in the preceding unit and opening a separate discussion. The next unit in the same discussion follows: it begins Iddhividhāyāti iddhikoṭṭhāsāya, iddhivikappāya vā., explaining afresh the opening expression of that same sentence. The present unit explains kinds of iddhi; the next explains the syntax of iddhividha and the sequence of its practice. The two inherit the same sentence but treat different faces of it. This apparatus records the fact; the decision to divide them does not rest on this heading.

Movement The chapter Overview assigns this unit to movement §B, “Dasaiddhikathā Ten Kinds of Supernormal Power.” The paragraph-number domain assigned to it appears verbatim in that table; this heading neither reproduces nor excerpts it.

II. Terms and Renderings

This heading records only usage and location in this unit. Normative readings of terms are governed by the glossary; this heading does not determine what the glossary leaves unsettled. Established terms are not established again here. Those occurring in this unit are iddhi (supernormal power)・vikubbanā (transformation)・arahattamagga (arahant path)・aniccānupassanā (contemplation of impermanence)・nirodhasamāpatti (attainment of cessation)・paṭisambhidā (discrimination)・SāriputtaMahāmoggallāna (Sāriputta/Mahāmoggallāna)・upāsikā (laywoman)・Uttarā upāsikā (the laywoman Uttarā)・vinipātika (being fallen into a bad destination)・JotikaJaṭilaMeṇḍaka (Jotika/Jaṭila/Meṇḍaka)・cakkavattī (Wheel-Turning Monarch)・khīṇāsava (one whose taints are destroyed)・mettā (loving-kindness)・asubha (foulness)・upekkhā (equanimity). Only forms new in this unit are listed below.

Meanings of supernormal power and names of the ten kinds 〔CSCD §369〕—the three meanings of iddhi and the list of ten supernormal powers.

⚠︎ pāṭihāriyaguidanceiddhi is established as “supernormal power,” while this unit sets paṭiharatīti pāṭihāriyaṃ beside it, so reading both as “supernormal power” would collide. Yet this chapter’s yamakapāṭihāriya has the established Chinese designation “Twin Marvel”—one form in two usages, recorded for later scholars〔CSCD §369〕

⚠︎ vikubbanā iddhisupernormal power by transformationvikubbanā is established as transformation (collective designation for the three kinds of pervasion in the chapter on divine abodes); here it is the second of the ten powers—one form in two usages, recorded〔CSCD §369〕
manomayā iddhimind-made supernormal powerthird of the ten; another body is produced within the body〔CSCD §369〕
⚠︎ ñāṇavipphārā iddhisupernormal power by the pervasion of knowledgepaired with samādhivipphārā iddhi, whose original form was already listed in the entries for the chapter on the benefits of developing wisdom 〔CSCD §875〕. This edition reads vipphāra as pervasion, following the established form in the aggregates chapter and avoiding collision with pharaṇa, “pervading.” This reading was changed from the original proposal “supernormal power by the pervading of knowledge”; the original proposal is recorded, and the paired row was changed likewise for concentration. Names of the ten follow the form “supernormal power by …” without “of.” ⚠︎ Recorded〔CSCD §369〕
ariyā iddhinoble supernormal powersixth of the ten; possessed only by noble ones who have mastery of mind〔CSCD §369〕

Four points to be read together ① The names of the ten powers form one family—this apparatus collects them in seven rows, in the exact order of the question-and-answer cited at 〔CSCD §369〕 and the ten paragraphs that follow. ② ⚠︎ The conflict between pāṭihāriya and iddhi: at 〔CSCD §369〕 the Paṭisambhidāmagga is cited as nekkhammaṃ ijjhatīti iddhi, paṭiharatīti pāṭihāriyaṃthe two terms are set beside each other in one sentence and therefore cannot be rendered alike. With iddhi established as “supernormal power” in the meditation-subject entries, this apparatus takes pāṭihāriya as “guidance” (the term used for the three forms of guidance in the Chinese tradition). Yet yamakapāṭihāriya at 〔CSCD §388〕 in this chapter has the established Chinese name “Twin Marvel,” setting the two faces in tensionone form in two usages; the fact is recorded without deciding it, for later scholars. ③ ⚠︎ One form in two usages for vikubbanā: the established vikubbanā means transformation, where it serves as the collective designation for three kinds of pervasion in the chapter on the divine abodes; the present vikubbanā iddhi is the second of the ten powers—different positions, same term; this apparatus follows the established term and records the difference in position. ④ The names in the unit’s twelve accounts (Bākula, Saṅkicca, Bhūtapāla, Sāriputta, Sañjīva, Stump Koṇḍañña, Uttarā, Sāmāvatī, Jotika, Jaṭila, Ghosita, Meṇḍaka, together with the five people of great merit) are constructed transcriptions except for four already established. This apparatus does not determine their established Chinese names and records each for later scholars.

III. Variant Readings

Material available This unit has no in-house Pāli collated to pages and therefore no collation passage to record. The only available face is the base-text column itself. It is recorded without adjudication.

Measured survey A verbatim survey of the whole base-text column found zero occurrences of the parenthetical variant forms (sī.)(syā.)(kaṃ.)(pī.); zero occurrences of pāṭho; and zero occurrences of Porāṇāporāṇā, Kecikeci, and eke. Square-bracket notes occur in only two forms (11 [§NN] paragraph numbers and 12 page notations). Where nothing was found, none is recorded.

Three textual features arising within this column ① The end of 〔CSCD §379〕 reads …tattha tattha sammāpayogapaccayā ijjhanaṭṭhena iddhīti āgatā. (10)a parenthetical number (10) appended to the paragraph, occupying the position of a parenthetical source note but not itself a source; it marks the count of the ten powers. No other paragraph in the chapter has this form (a paragraph-by-paragraph reverse check found this single occurrence in the whole chapter). Its wording is recorded, neither altered nor deleted. ② The citation at the end of 〔CSCD §377〕 reads Pañcannaṃ mahāpuññānaṃ puññavato iddhī''ti. without a parenthetical source reference, whereas the preceding nine citations are tied to (paṭi. ma. 3.…)the same citation form, but the last lacks a source; it is recorded without supplying one. ③ The source (dha. pa. aṭṭha. 1.1) is attached at the end of the account of Khāṇukoṇḍaññatthero in 〔CSCD §374〕, within a narrative rather than after a quotation (…saha paṭisambhidāhi arahattaṃ pāpuṇiṃsu (dha. pa. aṭṭha. 1.1). Ayamettha…)—the only example in this unit of a source tied to narrative rather than a citation, recorded as found.

Boundary of this apparatus Everything listed above is a fact about the face of the base-text column; it has not been collated against PTS scan pages.

IV. The Commentator’s Citations

Measured parenthetical source references This unit has 18 parenthetical source references (in addition to the paragraph-final (10), a numerical marker not counted here), distributed as follows:

(saṃ. ni. 1.240)1source for Piyaṅkaramātā the yakkhinī〔CSCD §376〕

Measured citation markers Yathāha occurs 8 times (3 at 〔CSCD §369〕; one each at 〔CSCD §375〕, 〔CSCD §376〕, 〔CSCD §377〕, 〔CSCD §378〕, and 〔CSCD §379〕); Vuttañhetaṃ occurs twice (〔CSCD §373〕 and 〔CSCD §374〕); Tena vuttaṃTenetaṃ vuccatiApare āhukira all occur zero times. The quotation marker '' occurs in 24 pairs.

Density of the Commentator’s citations of the Paṭisambhidāmagga Of the names and definitions of ten powers in this unit, nine of the ten are quoted verbatim from the Paṭisambhidāmagga (the consecutive passages paṭi. ma. 3.93.18). Only the examples separately supplied by the commentaries for the tenth (crafts, medicine, learning the three Vedas and Three Piṭakas, and even farming) are explicitly marked by the Commentator as coming from a commentary rather than the canonical text (Aṭṭhakathāyaṃ pana…āgatā). This unit has the densest citation of the Paṭisambhidāmagga among the chapter’s six units; the apparatus records the fact without independently determining correspondences.

Two classes of provenance for the accounts Among this unit’s twelve accounts, four carry sources (udā. 34ma. ni. 1.507dha. pa. aṭṭha. 1.1saṃ. ni. 1.240); three do not and are entrusted to the formula Vatthu pana vitthārena kathetabbaṃVatthu pana vitthāretabbaṃ (Bākula, Bhūtapāla, and Uttarā)—the Commentator marks that the account should be told in detail but does not tell it in detail here. This apparatus records the fact and does not supply the provenance of those accounts.

V. Similes and Rhetoric

This heading records only the location of similes and what they are applied to; it offers no literary evaluation.

A. Inventory of similes Comparison-leading Yathāyathā occurs zero times in the whole unit (the citation marker Yathāha is not counted); evameva zero times; viya 3 times; iva zero times; forms of sadisa once; and upamā and seyyathāpi zero times. The unit contains four similes: ① at 〔CSCD §373〕, macchakucchiyaṃ suvaṇṇabimbaṃ viya dārakaṃ (the infant in the fish’s belly like a golden image); ② at 〔CSCD §374〕, meghassa viya gajjatosaddo (the sound of the yakkha’s blow like thunder); ③ at 〔CSCD §374〕, Telaṃ pokkharapattato udakabindu viya vivaṭṭamānaṃ (the hot oil flowing off like a drop of water from a lotus leaf); ④ before therasseva upari sabbabhaṇḍakāni ṭhapesuṃ at 〔CSCD §374〕, ''khāṇuko aya''nti maññamānā (the thieves mistake the elder for a stump—formed with maññamānā, not viya, and recorded here as a comparison). Though this is a chapter on ten powers, it has only four similes, and all four occur within accounts rather than explanations of doctrine. The doctrinal explanation stands entirely on canonical citations and their divisions, without recourse to simile. The fact is recorded without evaluation.

B. Verifiable rhetorical observations ① There are 7 question marks (?), five in questions cited from the Paṭisambhidāmagga (katamā dasa iddhiyo, katamā ariyā iddhi?, and the rest), while only two questions are posed by the Commentator himself. ② The …pe… abbreviation occurs 6 times, all within cited passages. ③ Aparo nayo (“another method”) occurs twice at 〔CSCD §369〕: the Commentator gives three successive explanations of the single word iddhi without choosing one—three explanations of one word coexist, following the same principle as the “two explanations of one sentence” in the opening unit. ④ Verse occurs zero times. ⑤ Density of accounts: the unit’s accounts concern 12 people (including the five people of great merit), the greatest number of accounts among the chapter’s six units. Their narrative conclusions use three forms (Ayaṃ tassāyasmato samādhivipphārā iddhi.Ayamassā samādhivipphārā iddhi.Ayaṃ nesaṃ puññavato iddhi.), one for each applicable account, with no account lacking its conclusion.

VI. Intratextual Cross-Reading

Every reference carries a paragraph anchor. References are established only on names and terms verifiable in this unit. The correspondence between this unit’s paragraph numbers and chapter movements is unknown, so references are not tied to movement numbers and no conversion is estimated. No independent determination is made.
