Essence

Verse 4 had pressed the opponent back to "the dominant force of karma produces a special set of great elements" — the force of karma produces a special kind of matter that manifests as the wardens of hell; at that point Vasubandhu only held the line with the phrase "it is not that the matter is wholly nonexistent, yet it does not stand to reason," without breaking it open. Verse 5 takes that step he had left blank, and takes it with just one counter-question: "If you grant that, by the force of karma, a special set of great elements is produced, giving rise to a transformation of just this kind — then what is there against [letting it happen] upon consciousness?" Since you already grant that the force of karma can make matter undergo a transformation of just this kind, then this same force of karma — letting it transform within "consciousness" — what is there against that?

This question does not argue over "whether there is a transformation" (the transformation is granted by both sides); it argues only over "where the transformation lands." The opponent wants to hang it on the great elements outside consciousness; Vasubandhu says that posits one extra layer of something real outside the mind. The very same karmic transformation, landing directly upon consciousness — the form of the wardens, their tormenting — is all consciousness's own manifesting: it both makes sense and saves a layer. And so the whole weight of the debate is, by this one lever of "karmic transformation," prised in a single move from "external objects are real" over to "what consciousness manifests." The first four verses were the refuting; Verse 5 is the establishing.

Notice: the auto-commentary to Verse 5 is short enough merely to restate the verse's counter-question once over, with no unfolding — this is the "weight on the verse, light on the commentary" of "the meaning being complete in the verse," and the eyes should go back to the verse itself. Verse 5 has only established that "the transformation can be upon consciousness"; it has not yet said "why it must be upon consciousness" — that step is handed to Verse 6 (the karmic perfuming is in the continuum of consciousness, so the fruit too ought to be in consciousness), and the counter-question that wheels in scriptural authority, "but the Buddha plainly speaks of the bases such as form-and-the-rest," is held back to Verse 7 to explain its hidden intent. Verse 5 is the pivot of §I where refuting turns into establishing.

白話Plain reading

§Verse — plain reading

If you grant that, by the force of karma, a special kind of great matter (a special set of great elements, 異大種) can be produced, and that it gives rise to a transformation of just that kind — then what is there against letting this same transformation happen upon "consciousness" (識)?

§Auto-commentary — plain reading

Vasubandhu explains this verse.

Why not grant that "consciousness, by the force of karma, gives rise to a transformation of just this kind," and instead insist on holding that it is "the great elements (outside consciousness) that give rise to the transformation"? Vasubandhu then goes on to carry this further with the verse that follows.

義疏Exposition

The step the first four verses forced open is taken here

Verse 4 had pressed the opponent back to "the dominant force of karma produces a special set of great elements" (業增上力生異大種) — the force of karma produces a special kind of matter that manifests as the wardens of hell. At that point Vasubandhu only held the line with the single phrase "it is not that the matter is wholly nonexistent, yet it does not stand to reason" (非事全無,然不應理), without breaking it open. In Verse 5 he takes that step he had left blank — and takes it ever so lightly: he no longer adds another stroke to refute; he simply turns it back as a question —

"If you grant that, by the force of karma, a special set of great elements is produced, giving rise to a transformation of just this kind — then what is there against [letting it happen] upon consciousness (於識何不許)?"

Since you already grant that "the force of karma can make matter (the great elements, 大種) undergo a transformation of just this kind," then I ask you: this same force of karma — letting it give rise to a transformation of just this kind within "consciousness" (識) — what is there against that?

A single lever shifts the whole weight across

The brilliance of this one question is that it does not argue with you over "whether there is a transformation" — the transformation is something you and I both grant. It argues only over "where the transformation lands." The opponent wants to hang the transformation on "the great elements outside consciousness"; Vasubandhu says: that posits one extra layer of something real outside the mind. The very same karmic transformation, landing directly upon consciousness — the form of the wardens, their tormenting — is all consciousness's own manifesting. This both makes sense and saves a layer.

And so the whole weight of the debate is, by this one lever of "karmic transformation," prised in a single move from "external objects are real" over to "what consciousness manifests." The first four verses were the "refuting"; Verse 5 is the "establishing": those wardens, the ram-mountains, the forest of blades turn out not to be things outside the mind, but consciousness's own transformation under the perfuming impulse of karma.

Why the auto-commentary is short enough to be a single line

Notice a detail of form: the auto-commentary to Verse 5 is unusually short — it merely restates the verse's counter-question once over: "Why not grant that consciousness, by the force of karma, undergoes a transformation of just this kind, and instead hold to the great elements?" No unfolding, no marshalling of proofs. This is not Vasubandhu being lazy; it is the meaning being complete in the verse: the entire weight of this verse lies in that one counter-question, and to say more would only dilute it. Where you meet this kind of "weight on the verse, light on the commentary," put your eyes back on the verse itself.

Carried forward (承衍)

Verse 5 has only established that "the transformation can be upon consciousness"; it has not yet said "why it must be upon consciousness and not outside it." The opponent can still hold out and ask: by what right must the fruit of perfuming land within consciousness? That question Verse 6 answers head-on with "the karmic perfuming is in the continuum of consciousness" (業熏在識相續) — since the perfuming is within consciousness, the fruit too ought to be within consciousness, and to hang the fruit outside consciousness is self-contradictory. And the counter-question that wheels in scriptural authority to press — "but the Buddha plainly does speak of the bases such as form-and-the-rest (色等處)!" — Vasubandhu holds back to break open in Verse 6 and to explain its "hidden intent" (密意) head-on in Verse 7. Verse 5 is the pivot of §I where refuting turns into establishing; the two verses that follow, taking their cue from it, tamp down "what consciousness manifests" and account for the purpose behind the Buddha's speaking of the bases such as form-and-the-rest.

1. Doctrinal-outline placement

SystemThis verse's place
The treatise's five partsThe pivotal turning-verse of §I Establishing the Thesis · Answering the Four Objections (vv.1–7). Verse 4 draws out the second rescue, "the dominant force of karma produces a special set of great elements" (業增上力生異大種) → Verse 5 refutes head-on: since the force of karma can make the great elements transform, why not allow it to make consciousness transform? → Verse 6, karmic perfuming is in consciousness (業熏在識, the perfuming in the continuum of consciousness) → Verse 7, hidden intent (密意, the hidden intent of the bases such as form-and-the-rest).
Verse 4 → Verse 5Verse 4's closing 「非事全無,然不應理」 ("it is not that the matter is wholly nonexistent, yet it does not stand to reason") was left hanging, unanswered; Verse 5 answers it head-on — it being the same force of karma that gives rise to the transformation, rather than holding to "the great elements outside consciousness," why not allow "consciousness itself to transform"?
Xuanzang's textual loci§Verse 〔p0075a27–28〕· §Auto-commentary 〔p0075a29–b01〕 (the auto-commentary is extremely brief, its weight resting on the verse's counter-question)

2. The source-verse · the doctrinal thread

The §Verse's single counter-question runs through all four lines: 「若許由業力,有異大種生,起如是轉變」 ("if you grant that, by the force of karma, a special set of great elements is produced, giving rise to a transformation of just this kind") — following along with what the opponent has set up (the force of karma producing the special great elements, giving rise to the transformation of form, appearance, magnitude and force); 「於識何不許?」 ("then what is there against [letting it happen] upon consciousness?") — closing with a single counter-question: since you grant that the force of karma can make the great elements transform just so, why not grant that the force of karma makes "consciousness" transform just so?

The §Auto-commentary is extremely brief, stopping at a single line that restates the counter-question: 「何緣不許識由業力如是轉變,而執大種?」 ("Why not grant that consciousness, by the force of karma, undergoes a transformation of just this kind, and instead hold to the great elements?"). The shortness of the auto-commentary is precisely what shows that the whole centre of gravity of this verse lies in the verse's counter-question — using the opponent's own granted "karmic transformation" as a lever to prise the landing-point back from "the great elements outside consciousness" onto "consciousness."

3. Scripture and treatise: the grounding (scriptural proof → treatise-root)

  • Scriptural proof. That the force of karma can give rise to the transformation of maturation is itself the Buddha's teaching on the principle of karmic fruition; Vasubandhu argues precisely upon the "karmic transformation" that the opponent too grants.
  • Treatise-root. Vasubandhu's auto-commentary (T1590) establishes the meaning by counter-question — the fact of karmic transformation is granted by both sides, the difference lying only in whether the "basis of the transformation" (轉變所依) is the great elements or consciousness; the treatise-master holds for consciousness and refutes the holding to the great elements.

4. The treatise-root in essence (Vasubandhu's auto-commentary, T1590)

This verse is the head-on pivot of §I's answering of the objections: the first four verses press [the opponent] back step by step, and by Verse 4 have driven the opponent back to "the force of karma produces the special great elements"; Verse 5 no longer refutes but turns to establishing — since "the force of karma giving rise to transformation" is granted by both, the transformation need not be tied to the great elements outside consciousness; tying it to consciousness is no less admissible, and is moreover more economical (it does not separately posit something real outside consciousness). The one line 「於識何不許」 ("what is there against [letting it happen] upon consciousness") formally hands over the whole weight of the debate from "external objects are real" to "what consciousness manifests." The auto-commentary, brief to a single line, is the "weight on the verse, light on the commentary" of the formal convention — the meaning is complete in the verse.
