Essence

At the close of Verse 7, Vasubandhu asks himself: when the Buddha says "there are the colour-and-the-rest twelve sense-fields," on what hidden intent does he say it? Verse 8 answers head-on. This is no longer refuting but establishing — across the seven verses of §I the reality of external objects was refuted to the very end; from this verse on, Vasubandhu states positively "how consciousness-only houses the Buddha's twelve sense-fields."

Take "seeing colour-and-form": the consciousness that presents colour-and-form arises from its own seed, transforming under the convergence of the many conditions, and as it arises it takes on the look of a colour-appearance being there. The crux is that this one consciousness, at arising, carries two faces of its own — one facing inward, its seed as the cause of arising (the side of the faculty, the grasper); one facing outward, the colour-appearance it presents (the side of the object, the grasped). The Buddha, on the inward-facing seed, calls it the "eye sense-field"; on the outward-facing presented colour, calls it the "colour sense-field." The two faces of one consciousness are spoken of as one pair of sense-fields. Each of the six consciousnesses has its two faces of "seed and presentation," exactly six pairs, twelve in all — and that is the twelve sense-fields. "On the basis of this hidden intent, he speaks of the colour-and-the-rest ten."

So the twelve sense-fields the Buddha speaks of are not twelve kinds of independently real dharmas outside the mind, but the positing of each of the six consciousnesses' "inward-facing seed" and "outward-facing presentation." The Buddha did not misspeak; it is the proponents of external objects who took the "outer face" that consciousness carries of itself to be a real outer thing existing apart from consciousness. The "hidden intent of the colour-and-the-rest sense-fields" left hanging by Verses 6 and 7 is here fully accounted for. Vasubandhu goes on to ask himself "what surpassing benefit is there in speaking on this hidden intent," leaving it for Verse 9 to answer: once the twelve sense-fields are reduced to the two faces of consciousness, with not one an independent real master, the selflessness of person (no seeing, knowing self) and the selflessness of dharmas (no dharma real apart from consciousness) flow naturally out. Verse 8 is the pivot of §II, the first positive cornerstone of the turn from refuting to establishing. Hold this picture in mind: one consciousness arises carrying an inner and an outer face; the twelve sense-fields the Buddha speaks of are just the six pairs of faces of the six consciousnesses.

白話Plain reading

§Verse — plain reading

Consciousness arises from its own seed, and as it arises it takes on the look of an object-appearance turning into view; in order to establish the "inner sense-fields" and the "outer sense-fields," the Buddha spoke of them as the (colour-and-the-rest) twelve sense-fields.

§Auto-commentary — plain reading

Vasubandhu explains this verse.

What is this verse saying? That "consciousness which presents colour-and-form" arises from its own seed, transforming under the convergence of the many conditions, severally; and the Buddha, on the basis of that seed and of the colour-and-form thus presented, speaks of them separately as the "eye sense-field" (眼處) and the "colour sense-field" (色處). And so on, up to "consciousness which presents touch," which likewise arises from its own seed, transforming under the convergence of the many conditions, severally; and the Buddha, on the basis of that seed and of the touch thus presented, speaks of them separately as the "body sense-field" (身處) and the "touch sense-field" (觸處).

It is precisely on the basis of this hidden intent (密意) that the Buddha speaks of there being the "colour-and-the-rest twelve sense-fields."

So then — what surpassing benefit is there in speaking thus, on the basis of a hidden intent? Vasubandhu answers with the verse that follows.

義疏Exposition

  • 一張朝內:它的生因種子(識賴以生起的根據,偏「能取」「根」的一側);

What Verse 7 asked, Verse 8 answers

At the close of Verse 7, Vasubandhu himself threw out a question: when the Buddha says "there are the colour-and-the-rest twelve sense-fields," on what hidden intent (密意) does he say it? Verse 8 is the head-on answer to that question. Notice — this is no longer "refuting" but "establishing": across the seven verses of §I, the reality of external objects was refuted to the very end; from this verse onward, Vasubandhu states positively "how consciousness-only houses the Buddha's twelve sense-fields."

One consciousness arises, carrying two faces of its own

Vasubandhu says: take the matter of "seeing colour-and-form." That "consciousness which presents colour-and-form" (似色現識) — how does it arise? It arises from its own seed (自種子 sva-bīja), transforming and arising under the convergence of the many conditions, and as it arises it takes on the look of a colour-appearance being there (似境相而轉).

Here is the crux: the arising of this one consciousness carries two faces of its own —

  • one facing inward: its seed as the cause of arising (the ground on which consciousness depends to arise — the side of "grasper" and "faculty");
  • one facing outward: the colour-appearance it presents (the object as it is presented — the side of "grasped" and "object").

The Buddha, on the basis of this inward-facing seed, calls it the "eye sense-field" (眼處); on the basis of this outward-facing presented colour-and-form, calls it the "colour sense-field" (色處). The two faces of one consciousness are spoken of as one pair of "sense-fields."

The twelve sense-fields are just the six pairs of faces of the six consciousnesses

Carrying this pattern through: "consciousness which presents touch" (似觸現識) likewise arises from its own seed and presents a touch-appearance — the Buddha, on the basis of its seed, says "body sense-field," and on the basis of its presented touch, says "touch sense-field." Eye–colour, ear–sound, nose–smell, tongue–taste, body–touch… on down to mind–dharmas: each of the six consciousnesses has its two faces of "seed and presentation," exactly six pairs, twelve in all — and this is the twelve sense-fields. "On the basis of this hidden intent, he speaks of the colour-and-the-rest ten" (依斯密意,說色等十).

So the twelve sense-fields the Buddha speaks of are not twelve kinds of independently real dharmas each standing outside the mind; they are the positing of these two faces of each of the six consciousnesses — the "inward-facing seed" and the "outward-facing presentation." The Buddha did not misspeak; it is the proponents of external objects who misheard — taking the "outer face" that consciousness carries of itself to be a real outer thing existing apart from consciousness. The "hidden intent of the colour-and-the-rest sense-fields" left hanging by Verses 6 and 7 is here fully accounted for: the twelve sense-fields are wholly within consciousness-only, with not an inch leaking out beyond consciousness.

Why reduce it this way

Perhaps someone asks: what is gained by construing the twelve sense-fields as the inner and outer faces of consciousness? Vasubandhu himself goes on to ask the very same thing — "what surpassing benefit is there in speaking thus, on the basis of this hidden intent?" (此密意說有何勝利) He does not answer it in Verse 8; he leaves it for Verse 9. But the direction is already laid: once the twelve sense-fields are reduced to "the two faces of consciousness, with not one of them an independent real master," then "there is no seeing, knowing 'self'" (the selflessness of person, 人無我) and "there is no real 'dharma' existing apart from consciousness" (the selflessness of dharmas, 法無我) — the two selflessnesses flow naturally out of this reduction.

Carried forward (承衍)

Verse 8 is the pivot of §II, and the first positive cornerstone after the whole treatise turns from "refuting" to "establishing": it folds the Buddha's teaching of the twelve sense-fields entirely into the consciousness-only structure of "own-seed and object-likeness." The question it plants — "what surpassing benefit is there in speaking thus, on this hidden intent" — is precisely the starting point of Verse 9: Verse 9 follows this two-faced reduction through, drawing out the two selflessnesses of person and of dharmas, and holding to the measure of "breaking the clinging without denying existence"; with that, §II is brought to its close. Reading Verse 8, hold this picture in mind: one consciousness arises carrying an inner and an outer face of its own; the twelve sense-fields the Buddha speaks of are just the six pairs of faces of the six consciousnesses.

1. Doctrinal-outline placement

SystemThis verse's place
The treatise's five partsThe opening verse of §II Hidden Intent · The Two Selflessnesses (密意·二無我, vv.8–9). §I closes at v.7 with the question 「依何密意說色等十」 ("on what hidden intent does he speak of the colour-and-the-rest ten") → v.8 answers head-on: consciousness arises from its own seed and turns as object-likeness; the seed and the presented [appearance] are the inner and outer sense-fields → v.9 takes it up and draws out the two selflessnesses (§II's close).
v.7 → v.8v.7 establishes that 「色等處為密意說」 ("the colour-and-the-rest sense-fields are spoken of on a hidden intent") without making the content of that hidden intent explicit; v.8 unfolds this hidden intent head-on — the twelve sense-fields are the inner and outer faces of consciousness-transformation.
Xuanzang's textual loci§Verse 〔p0075b17–18〕· §Auto-commentary 〔p0075b19–24〕

2. The source-verse · the doctrinal thread

The §Verse's four lines: 「識從自種生」 ("consciousness arises from its own seed" — consciousness is born from its own seed) · 「似境相而轉」 ("it turns as an object-appearance" — at arising it turns into view taking on the look of an object-appearance) · 「為成內外處」 ("in order to establish the inner and outer sense-fields") · 「佛說彼為十」 ("the Buddha spoke of them as the [colour-and-the-rest] ten").

The §Auto-commentary unfolds the full set with "the eye sense-field and the colour sense-field" (眼處色處) as the pattern: 「似色現識」 (consciousness which presents colour-and-form) arises from its own seed, transforming severally under the convergence of conditions; the Buddha, on the basis of that seed (種子—內 the seed — inner), speaks of it as the eye sense-field, and on the basis of the presented colour (似現—外 the presented [appearance] — outer), speaks of it as the colour sense-field. So too on up to 似觸現識 (consciousness which presents touch): on the basis of its seed he speaks of the body sense-field, on the basis of the presented touch he speaks of the touch sense-field. 「依斯密意,說色等十」 ("on the basis of this hidden intent, he speaks of the colour-and-the-rest ten") — the two faces of one consciousness-transformation (seed / presentation, inner / outer) are one pair of sense-fields. The closing question 「此密意說有何勝利」 ("what surpassing benefit is there in speaking on this hidden intent") launches v.9 (the two selflessnesses being its benefit).

3. Scripture and treatise: the grounding (scriptural proof → treatise-root)

  • Scriptural proof. The Buddha's teaching of 「眼色等十二處」 ("the eye, colour, and the rest of the twelve sense-fields") is itself the teaching of the scriptures (the same teaching debated at §I vv.6–7); v.8 gives the correct construal of the hidden intent of this teaching — it does not set up a new doctrine apart.
  • Treatise-root. Vasubandhu's auto-commentary (T1590), by means of the two faces of "own-seed and presented [appearance]," reduces the Buddha's twelve sense-fields to the inner and outer two faces of one consciousness-transformation; the treatise's construal of the teaching does not depart from the Buddha's [teaching of the] twelve sense-fields, only bringing out its consciousness-only hidden intent.

4. The treatise-root in essence (Vasubandhu's auto-commentary, T1590)

This verse is the pivot of §II, and the positive establishment of the whole treatise's "carrying the twelve sense-fields through consciousness-only." Vasubandhu's key lies in the twofold reliance of 「彼種及所現」 ("that seed and the presented [appearance]"): the arising of one 「似色現識」 (consciousness presenting colour-and-form) has two faces — the inward-facing 「自種子」 (own-seed; the cause of arising, the support of the faculty) and the outward-facing 「所現色」 (presented colour; the appearance presented, the support of the object); the Buddha, on the basis of these inner and outer two faces of this one consciousness, speaks of them separately as the "eye sense-field" (on the basis of the seed) and the "colour sense-field" (on the basis of the presentation). The twelve sense-fields are not twelve kinds of real dharmas outside the mind, but the positing of the "seed and presentation" two faces of each of the six consciousnesses. Thus the teaching of the twelve sense-fields is wholly subsumed into consciousness-only without being refuted; the hidden intent of the Buddha's speaking of the colour-and-the-rest sense-fields is here fully shown. The reduction of one consciousness to its two faces once established, v.9 draws from it the two selflessnesses of person and of dharmas.

5. The ancient masters' readings (古德 · stating their position)

  • Dharmapāla, Cheng weishi baosheng lun 《成唯識寶生論》T31n1591 (Tang; tr. Yijing 義淨; a transmitted Chinese witness) — the middle of fascicle two glosses this verse, unfolding the sense of establishing the inner and outer sense-fields upon the twofold reliance of "the seed and the presented [appearance]." 〔Position stated: Dharmapāla has a detailed gloss on establishing the sense-fields upon the own-seed / presented-appearance two faces; this is one of the ancient masters' readings, recorded here only as to its position, not adjudicated.〕
