心要Essence

Can we still trust an ancient work after it has been rearranged? We often imagine trustworthiness to mean “never touched by another hand.” Once we learn that a work was recorded, revised, and reset in order, a question arises: is what we are reading still the original teaching?

Shenjiong's preface does not conceal the problem. Zhiyi taught, Guanding privately recorded, and more than a century later Master Lang arranged the whole work because its textual sequence was uneven. The preface preserves each of the four layers—teaching, recording, settlement, and preface—and also preserves the arranger's own boundary: the sequence may be reordered so that readers can reach the purport through the text, but arbitrary additions and deletions made for the sake of tidiness cross the line.

Real trustworthiness does not erase the hands within a transmission. It makes visible what each hand did and what it had no authority to do.

This is also like the trap and the fish, the collar and the garment, the bridge and the place of jewels. Without a trap, the fish is difficult to obtain. Without a collar, the garment is difficult to put in order. Without a bridge, the farther shore is difficult to reach. Yet holding a trap, a collar, or a bridge does not mean that one has caught the fish, put on the garment, or arrived at the place of jewels.

The study of an ancient work therefore requires two forms of fidelity at once: fidelity to the words, so that our own accommodations do not remake the original meaning; and fidelity to what the words indicate, so that a settled text is not mistaken for completed practice.

When a passage reads awkwardly, we can first ask: am I protecting the meaning it indicates, or merely the arrangement to which I am accustomed? When a passage reads smoothly, we can ask again: have I truly reached the purport through the words, or do I only think I understand because the wording now flows?

A transmission does not seal a book outside time. It lets the Dharma stream pass through the hands of generation after generation without losing the source from which it flows. Only by distinguishing every layer can we truly follow the current back to its origin.

Plain reading

Preface composed by the Tang monk Shenjiong of Jingzhong.

The Nameless Principle and the Teaching That Follows Conditions

The preface says: the ultimate principle originally has no name, yet its renown circulates throughout the four continents. The real One Vehicle has never moved, yet its functioning appears within the three realms. The teaching that points toward realization manifests amid all phenomena, while the principle itself remains still and unmoving. The siddhānta modes teach beings in accord with their various conditions; without contrivance or calculation, they naturally draw everyone forward. No merit could be greater.

The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma was taught after the Buddha appeared in the world, for the sake of the one great cause and condition. Yet beings resemble different medicinal herbs and trees. Although all receive the moisture of the same Dharma rain, each grows differently. Their opportunities and capacities are not of one kind, and so they receive the teaching in different ways. When the Buddha establishes provisional means, there is the turning of the Dharma wheel of the Four Truths at the Deer Park. When the Buddha reveals the real, there are the three transformations that purified the lands at Vulture Peak.

The sutra's purport is profound and its wording grave and carefully set. The Buddha's station is exalted, and the path he realized is deep. The sutra makes clear the distant Origin of buddhahood long ago in “The Lifespan of the Tathāgata,” while integrating it with the recent Trace of awakening at Gayā. The Dharma rain falls, the Dharma conch is blown, the Dharma drum is struck, and the Dharma meaning is proclaimed. What was taught in the past can then be set aside like traps for fish and snares for rabbits; through opening, revealing, awakening to, and entering, beings obtain the fish and rabbit to which today's teaching points.

Bodhisattvas as numerous as dust motes advance upon the path while their remaining births diminish. Śrāvakas who once lodged in a grass hut feel ashamed of what was small in their attainment and gladly seek the great Dharma. Medicine King burns his arms as an offering, while Many Treasures appears with his whole body to bear witness. This consummate and wondrous principle is so deep and subtle that words truly cannot exhaust it.

Zhiyi Teaches; Guanding Privately Records

There was a Tiantai master whose Dharma name was Zhiyi. Shenjiong's preface says that in the past he personally heard this sutra before the Tathāgata and that his station was within the Five Stages. His renown shook the courts of Chen and Sui. Without pursuing study through ordinary lecture halls, he inwardly accorded with the Buddha Vehicle. Through the power of dhāraṇī, he also possessed an inexhaustible eloquence of delight in teaching.

Zhiyi often lectured on the Prajñā of the Benevolent Kings before the sovereign in the Taiji Hall of the Chen ruler. The emperor, lord of ten thousand chariots, bent his knees before him, while the hundred officials snapped their fingers in acclaim. Consider only his interpretation through contemplating the mind: its wondrous meaning leaves behind both existence and nonexistence, takes true nature as its guiding standard, and relies on contemplation to attain thorough penetration. His explanations of the sutra's title and purport differed from those of earlier masters, and through the Five Meanings he examined the principle, everywhere supporting the sacred teaching.

Zhiyi propagated the Dharma for more than thirty years. Among commentaries he personally composed, only his Commentary on the Vimalakīrti Sūtra was written under an edict from Emperor Yang of the Sui. The present profound text on the Lotus, by contrast, was privately recorded by Dharma Master Guanding and compiled into twenty half-fascicles. It is indeed credible that only a person of wisdom could have drawn forth such wondrous meaning.

Master Lang Sets the Text in Order

More than a century after Zhiyi entered extinction, in the wuzi year of the Tang Tianbao era, there was a Master Lang at Qingtai Monastery in Dongyang Commandery. He was a long-lived elder within the Dharma gate, an eye within the clear and cooling Dharma pool, and a guide who could lead others onward. He was equally urgent about the Vehicle and the precepts and embraced both the inner Buddhist canon and the outer writings of the world. He was like one who had received the Dharma vessel bestowed upon Pūrṇa, and like Subhūti seated within his stone chamber.

Whenever Master Lang lectured on the Wenju, he would fall silent and sigh: “When one examines the purport of the whole work, it accords deeply with the Buddha Vehicle. Yet when one follows the movement of the words, the sequence is sometimes out of order. In some places the wording continues while the meaning breaks off; in others the words come later although their meaning has already appeared. Sometimes prose first opens a set of headings; elsewhere later text directly states their meaning. Sometimes a verse first gives a number, while the names subsequently listed do not follow that sequence. Yet the intent of the sage is difficult to fathom. We can only look up to it in trust.”

At that time, many disciples in the audience repeatedly urged him: “Those of superior capacity readily understand and do not lose their way when probing what is deep. Those of middling and lesser capacity, however, may follow the words and lose the purport. If the master would again extend his compassion and reset this text in order, the benefit it would bring to the propagation of the Dharma would surely be immense.”

Master Lang considered the matter again and again. Only when he truly had no alternative did he focus his recollection upon Master Zhiyi, pray for unseen aid, and ask whether the work should or should not be done. Only after receiving a response in a dream did he begin to arrange the textual order. This was simply a fitting accommodation made in accord with the movement of the text and is entirely understandable. It was not a careless pursuit of verbal sameness or difference followed by arbitrary additions and deletions.

From Words to Purport, from the Bridge to the Place of Jewels

Shenjiong hoped that later students would understand the original purport: finding the collar, they could retrieve the whole garment; taking up true gold, they could discard sand and gravel. What is taught is the true Dharma, and the one who teaches is not a false person. In this way, the subtle current of the teaching could be spread abroad, and the additions and deletions made in old age at Danqiu could be brought to completion. The hundred realms and thousand suchnesses would correspond like official tallies, while both the conjured city and the place of jewels would have a ford and bridge by which they could be approached.

The preface further says that this text relies upon Maitreya's earnest questioning to draw forth Mañjuśrī's carefully guarded reply. It also compares the six auxiliary treatises supporting the Jñānaprasthāna with a single incisive phrase praising the Spring and Autumn Annals.

Shenjiong and his companions gathered and ordered the preceding text, first gaining ease while examining the principle. They all encouraged themselves with the old accounts of together arousing the aspiration in the presence of the Buddha King of Emptiness and of the sixteen śrāmaṇeras each teaching in the Buddha's place. It was as though eye-floaters met sunlight: illness was dispelled and the Dharma jewel could grow. Yet Shenjiong still felt ashamed that his writing did not equal that of Yanmen. How, then, could he claim to have glimpsed a profundity like a dragon's frown? He hoped only that all who sought the profound meaning might bathe in the Dharma stream of the Buddha path and know the source from which that stream arose.

義疏Exposition

Why does a preface on textual settlement begin by speaking of what cannot be expressed in words? If a work must explain its transmission, the easiest place to begin is with names, dates, and fascicle counts. Shenjiong instead begins by saying that the ultimate principle has no name and the real Vehicle does not move. This is not a digression. Before the main text begins, he establishes a measure: words can circulate throughout the world without adding to or subtracting from the principle; the teaching can enter the three realms and guide beings without turning the real Vehicle into something that shifts with its circumstances.

This opening sets the boundary for the later discussion of recording, ordering, and textual settlement. Words are arranged so that the teaching can pass through them; the arrangement itself is not the truth. A transmission is preserved so that readers may reach the purport through the text; they are not meant to stop at the history of the text.

1. Why Does the Same Dharma Rain Produce Different Plants?

Shenjiong introduces the Lotus by moving from the one great cause and condition to the different responses of medicinal herbs and trees. The Buddha's Dharma is like a single rain, yet each plant grows according to its own nature. The differences among what beings receive therefore do not imply several conflicting destinations in the Buddha path. Their conditions differ, and what they can receive must consequently unfold at different depths and times.

The preface then places the Dharma wheel at the Deer Park beside the purification of the lands at Vulture Peak, and the recent awakening at Gayā beside buddhahood in the distant past revealed in the Lifespan of the Tathāgata chapter. Each pairing shows the same principle: teaching cannot be separated from the gate through which beings can presently enter, yet what they presently see cannot be mistaken for the whole. A provisional teaching is not false, for it truly draws beings forward. The real purport is not a separate doctrine severed from what came before, for the earlier teachings were already conveying them toward today's opening, revealing, awakening to, and entering.

The fish trap and rabbit snare thus become the preface's first instruction on how to read. They are useful because without means the fish and rabbit are difficult to obtain. They must also be capable of being left behind, because mistaking the means for the attainment forever prevents one from reaching what was sought. From Medicine King's offering and Many Treasures' testimony to the bodhisattvas' advance and the śrāvakas' delight in the great, Shenjiong reads the Lotus not as an accumulation of terminology but as beings actually turning from temporary supports toward what they must personally realize.

2. Who Teaches, Who Records, and Who Arranges?

The preface's second movement does not immediately prove a doctrine. It recounts how the present words reached later generations. In a voice of reverence, Shenjiong writes that Zhiyi deeply accorded with the Buddha Vehicle and possessed inexhaustible delight in teaching. He then summarizes the features of Zhiyi's interpretation through contemplating the mind, his explanation of the name and purport, and his examination of the principle through the Five Meanings. These are the words of the Tang author Shenjiong looking back upon Zhiyi. They are not Zhiyi praising his own virtues at the head of the fascicle.

Shenjiong also clearly separates two facts. The Commentary on the Vimalakīrti Sūtra was linked to an imperial command; the present text on the Lotus was privately recorded by Guanding in twenty half-fascicles. The teacher and the recorder therefore can neither be conflated nor torn apart. Without Zhiyi's teaching, Guanding would have had nothing to record. Without Guanding's record, later readers would have had no access to that teaching. The transmission's credibility does not depend upon gathering all credit into one attribution. It depends upon placing each layer truthfully.

By the Tang period, Master Lang no longer faced the original teaching assembly but a transmitted text. He identified six kinds of disorder: wording and meaning sometimes broke apart; earlier and later material sometimes appeared reversed; and headings or numbers in prose and verse did not always correspond. These were first of all problems in the route of reading. Those of superior capacity might pass beyond the uneven wording and directly grasp the purport, but those of middling and lesser capacity could follow the text and lose its meaning. The need for arrangement arose precisely from their difficulty.

All six forms concern the correspondence between wording and meaning, before and after, prose and verse. Shenjiong does not say that the doctrine itself had been overturned, nor does he judge an awkward reading sequence to be an error in the sage's intent. The textual settlement first addresses how the existing purport can appear clearly within the order of the words. Unless the level at which the problem occurs is first distinguished, arranging a route through the text can easily become rewriting its content. Yet if reverence prevents one from acknowledging problems in that route, readers of middling and lesser capacity will still follow the words and lose the purport.

3. Does the Power to Arrange Words Include the Power to Change Meaning?

The disciples asked Master Lang to reset the sequence not because they wanted a book that merely looked tidy, but because they wanted more people to reach the purport through the text. Master Lang considered the matter repeatedly and acted only when he could do nothing else. He recollected Zhiyi, asked whether the work might be done, and began only after receiving a response in a dream. By telling the story this way, the preface presents textual settlement as a constrained responsibility, not a later reader's unrestricted authority over an ancient work.

The decisive sentence says that the arrangement followed the movement of the text and made only suitable accommodations; it neither pursued sameness and difference carelessly nor made arbitrary additions or deletions. This is the settlement editor's own declaration as preserved by the preface. It cannot replace line-by-line collation, but it clearly states the boundary as that editor understood it: the sequence may be made navigable, but the sage's intent may not be rewritten through the sequence; later students may be helped, but the original meaning may not be sacrificed to tidiness.

This also resolves the opening's implicit question. The ultimate principle is nameless, yet the teaching must borrow names in order to circulate. The real Vehicle does not move, yet the order of a text may be arranged for the needs of later students. If one clings only to immovability and refuses all arrangement, the teaching may be obscured by a confused route through the words. If one sees only that words can be moved, one may forget that what they indicate cannot be remade at will. The path of textual settlement consists in letting the movable words faithfully serve what does not move with them.

4. Obtain the Garment; Do Not Merely Clutch Its Collar

In urging later students to understand the original intent, the preface strings together images of collar and garment, true gold and gravel, conjured city and place of jewels, ford and bridge. A collar allows one to find and put in order the entire garment, but it is not the whole garment. A bridge enables one to cross the water, but it is not the place of jewels one seeks to reach. A conjured city lets weary travelers rest, but cannot be mistaken for their destination.

Reaching the purport through the text is therefore not contempt for words. Precisely because words are collar, bridge, and ford, their sequence, boundaries, and differences deserve care. Precisely because they are only collar, bridge, and ford, determining the text cannot be mistaken for completing the practice. Master Lang's arrangement straightens the collar; later students must still put on the garment, cross the bridge, and proceed toward the place of jewels.

At the close, Shenjiong does not portray himself as someone who has already reached that place. He takes encouragement from the aspiration made in the presence of the Buddha King of Emptiness and from the sixteen śrāmaṇeras who repeated the teaching, then immediately confesses that his writing falls short of the ancients and that he has not glimpsed what is profound. This self-limitation clarifies the function of the preface. It records a traceable Dharma stream while admitting that its author only points beside the current. What matters is that later seekers of the profound can follow the stream upward and know the source of the waters in which they bathe.

Through the Eye of the Wenjuji

The extant opening of Zhanran's Wenjuji does not explain Shenjiong's preface line by line. After the fascicle title and attribution it proceeds directly to the Introduction chapter, first explaining the title Wenju and the six difficulties, then the adjoining note that Guanding heard the teaching at age twenty-seven and settled the text at age sixty-nine, and finally Zhiyi's main text. This unbroken sequence itself shows that the Wenjuji begins its direct exegesis with the title and attribution of the Introduction chapter. Its later explanations cannot be inserted backward as the meaning of every sentence in Shenjiong's preface.

The Wenjuji's explanation of the adjoining note nevertheless illuminates the layer of transmission. Zhanran reads twenty-seven and sixty-nine as ages and says that more than forty years elapsed between them. He explains “adding” as adding refutations of earlier masters and citations from scriptures and treatises, and “deleting” as removing prolixity and shaping the literary form. On this reading, addition and deletion do not mean only a superficial increase or decrease in graphs. They name Zhang'an Guanding's long work of hearing, recording, and revising the text.

This mirror can supplement the layer of transmission; it cannot replace Shenjiong's preface. The Tianbao-period arrangement recorded by Shenjiong belongs to another time. The Wenjuji does not establish a genealogy of versions for it, nor does it determine whether Zhanran's exemplar already contained this preface. Faced with that silence, the most faithful reading does not put words into an ancient text. It lets the two ancient witnesses keep their proper scope: Shenjiong states the textual settlement he knew; the Wenjuji states the title, attribution, and main text it explains. Where they meet, they can illuminate each other. Where they do not meet, they should not be forced together.

The eye of the Wenjuji in this unit is therefore first an eye for layers. Zhiyi taught, Guanding recorded, Master Lang settled the sequence, Shenjiong wrote the preface, and Zhanran explained the text. They inherit from one another, but none can be substituted for another as speaker. Transmission does not grind many layers into one. It makes each one clear, so that later readers may follow the text without losing its source.

考據Apparatus

This unit is Shenjiong's preface preserved at the head of the extant Miaofa Lianhua Jing Wenju. The title, attribution, and main text are the words of the Tang author Shenjiong. His retrospective accounts of Zhiyi's teaching, Guanding's private record, and Master Lang's arrangement must remain within that retrospective layer and must not be rewritten as Zhiyi's own account.

1. Doctrinal-Outline Placement

The strict domain is T34n1718〔0001a02–0001b16〕, comprising 838 graphs. It precedes the main text of the whole work and performs four functions: outlining the sutra's purport, stating the origin of the record, presenting the Tianbao textual settlement in its own words, and exhorting later students. Its movement yields six sections:

SequenceRangeBoundaries and Function
10001a02–0001a04Preface title 「天台法華䟽序」 tr. “Preface to the Tiantai Commentary on the Lotus”〔0001a02〕 and attribution 「鏡中沙門神逈述」 tr. “accounted by the monk Shenjiong of Jingzhong”〔0001a04〕
“The preface says: the ultimate principle has no name”〔0001a05〕 to 「多寶全身以證明」 tr. “Many Treasures, with his whole body, bore witness”〔0001a15〕; gathers key meanings from many chapters of the Lotus
“There was a Tiantai master whose Dharma name was Zhiyi”〔0001a16〕 to 「迺是灌頂法師私記,合二十卷」 tr. “It was privately recorded by Dharma Master Guanding and comprises twenty half-fascicles”〔0001a23–0001a24〕; retrospectively recounts teaching and recording
“More than a century after he entered extinction”〔0001a24〕 to 「非苟求同異輒有增減於其間矣」 tr. “It was not a careless pursuit of sameness and difference followed by additions and deletions within it”〔0001b07–0001b08〕; preserves in full the account of disorder, petition, prayer for aid, dream response, arrangement, and nonaddition or deletion
“I hope that later students will understand its original purport”〔0001b08〕 to 「褒《春秋》之一言」 tr. “a single phrase praising the Spring and Autumn Annals”〔0001b12〕; exhorts later students to reach the purport through the words
“Shenjiong and the others together gathered and ordered the preceding text”〔0001b13〕 to 「沐道流而有本焉」 tr. “bathe in the stream of the path and know its source”〔0001b16〕; Shenjiong's self-account, words of humility, and concluding aspiration

The extant T34n1719 opens with 「法華文句記卷第一〔上〕」 tr.Fahua Wenjuji (Record of the Words and Phrases of the Lotus), first fascicle [upper]”〔0151a03〕 and 「唐天台沙門湛然述」 tr. “composed by Zhanran, a Tiantai monk of the Tang dynasty”〔0151a05〕, then proceeds directly to 「釋序品初」 tr. “the opening explanation of the Introduction chapter”〔0151a06〕. Its continuous exegesis moves from the fascicle title and the note on six difficulties into the first section of the main text, without a scene of direct explanation for Shenjiong's preface. The doctrinal subject of this unit must therefore remain Shenjiong's own account. The Wenjuji can serve only as an adjoining mirror for the layer of transmission.

2. Formation and Transmission

Shenjiong's preface itself states that the words of this work 「迺是灌頂法師私記,合二十卷」 tr. “were privately recorded by Dharma Master Guanding and comprise twenty half-fascicles”〔0001a23–0001a24〕. The extant work is arranged as ten full fascicles and twenty half-fascicles; the title attribution of all twenty half-fascicles is 「天台智者大師說」 tr. “spoken by the Tiantai Master Zhiyi”〔0001b20〕, while 灌頂記—“recorded by Guanding”—occurs zero times among the fascicle attributions. Taken together, these data establish only that the preface preserves the account of Guanding's private record while the extant fascicle headings attribute the teaching solely to Zhiyi. A new attribution should not be invented.

The account of textual settlement begins with 「至唐天寶中歲在戊子」 tr. “in the wuzi year during the Tang Tianbao era”〔0001a25〕. It records that while lecturing, Master Lang of Qingtai Monastery in Dongyang Commandery saw six kinds of disorder in the movement of the text. At the urging of his audience, he 「乃專念大師,求加可否」 tr. “then concentrated his recollection upon the Great Master and sought aid as to whether it might be done”〔0001b06〕, and finally 「因夢所感,方始條倫」 tr. “only after receiving a response in a dream began to set it in order”〔0001b06–0001b07〕. The wuzi year was the seventh year of Tianbao, 748. Another ancient biography gives 「唐左溪釋玄朗」 tr. “Shi Xuanlang of Zuoxi in the Tang” T51n2068〔0058a29〕 and records the same chain of events at Qingtai Monastery: seeing disorder in the Wenju, receiving petitions, obtaining a dream response, and arranging the text〔0058b03–0058b13〕. This is sufficient to identify the Master Lang of the preface as Xuanlang.

The preface nevertheless concludes only with its own declaration, 「非苟求同異輒有增減於其間矣」 tr. “It was not a careless pursuit of sameness and difference followed by additions and deletions within it”〔0001b07–0001b08〕. This is a statement from the settlement editor's side of the transmission. It does not mean that the extant sequence can now be collated fascicle by fascicle against the earlier state. Too few ancient witnesses survive to determine the genealogy among the formerly disordered text, the arranged text, and the exemplar used by Zhanran; the forms are noted without adjudicating.

Shenjiong's identity is independently supported by an ancient biography. T50n2061 establishes 「唐越州大禹寺神逈傳」 tr. “Biography of Shenjiong of Dayu Monastery in Yuezhou during the Tang”〔0890c16〕, states that he 「得旨於左溪禪師」 tr. “received the purport from Meditation Master Zuoxi”〔0890c19〕, and records that he composed 「法華經文句序」 tr. “a preface to the Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra”〔0890c21〕. The ancient biography itself says that his place of origin was unknown; later accounts are therefore not used to supplement his native place or dates.

3. Sutra Passages Explained and Works Cited

A. A Complete Register of the Lotus Sutra Framework

Shenjiong's preface does not explain the sutra line by line. It weaves material from many chapters of the root sutra into parallel prose. The following table registers every major Lotus passage used by the preface. Where the preface adds, abbreviates, reorders, or combines the present scripture, the two are placed side by side rather than harmonized.

Original Line in Shenjiong's PrefacePresent T09n0262 TextComparison
“was taught for the sake of the one great cause and condition”〔0001a08〕「諸佛世尊唯以一大事因緣故出現於世」 tr. “The Buddha World-Honored Ones appear in the world solely because of the one great cause and condition”〔0007a21〕; the four phrases opening, revealing, awakening to, and entering begin at〔0007a23〕The preface recasts it as the reason the whole sutra was taught
“medicinal plants and trees differ, and after receiving moisture they grow differently”〔0001a08〕「一雲所雨,稱其種性而得生長」 tr. “What the single cloud rains down enables them to grow according to their various natures”〔0019b04〕; also 「乾地普洽,藥木竝茂」 tr. “the dry ground is universally moistened, and medicinal plants and trees flourish together”〔0019c23〕Combines the universal moisture of the single rain with the differences among the plants
“the Dharma wheel of the Four Truths at the Deer Park”〔0001a10〕「昔於波羅㮈,轉四諦法輪」 tr. “In the past at Vārāṇasī, I turned the Dharma wheel of the Four Truths”〔0012a18〕The root sutra says Vārāṇasī; the preface names the place as the Deer Park
“the pure lands of the three transformations at Vulture Peak”〔0001a10〕「時娑婆世界即變清淨」 tr. “At that time the Sahā world at once became pure”〔0033a09〕; also 「八方各更變二百萬億那由他國,皆令清淨」 tr. “In each of the eight directions he further transformed two hundred myriads of koṭis of nayutas of lands, making them all pure”〔0033a21〕; a similar sentence appears again at〔0033b03〕Condenses the three occasions of purification into “three transformations”
“reveals the distant Origin of the Lifespan and integrates the recent Trace at Gayā”〔0001a11–0001a12〕「我少出家,得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提」 tr. “I left home when young and attained unsurpassed complete awakening”〔0042c07〕; 「然我實成佛已來久遠若斯」 tr. “Yet since I actually became a buddha, such an exceedingly long time has passed”〔0042c08〕Sets recent and distant buddhahood against each other as Trace and Origin
“turn the Dharma wheel, strike the Dharma drum, blow the Dharma conch, and rain the Dharma rain”〔0062a12〕The root order is turning, striking, blowing, raining, and it has no graph corresponding to “proclaiming”
“opening, revealing, awakening to, and entering”〔0001a13〕The four sentences beginning with 「欲令眾生開佛知見」 tr. “wishing to cause beings to open the Buddha's knowledge and vision”〔0007a24–0007a28〕The four terms directly inherit “Skillful Means”
“bodhisattvas as numerous as dust motes advance upon the path and diminish their remaining births”〔0001a13〕The attainments of 「一世界微塵數菩薩」 tr. “bodhisattvas equal to the dust motes in one world” and others begin at〔0044a11〕; remaining births decrease from eight to one at〔0044a17–0044a24〕“Advancing on the path and diminishing births” is the preface's synthesis, not continuous wording in the root text
“śrāvakas of the grass hut feel ashamed of the small and delight in the great”〔0001a14〕「猶處門外,止宿草庵,自念貧事:『我無此物。』」 tr. “Still outside the gate, he lodged in a grass hut and reflected upon his poverty: ‘I possess none of this’”〔0018a29〕“Grass hut” is verbatim; shame at the small and delight in the great synthesize the meaning of the whole parable
“Medicine King burned his arms as an offering”〔0001a14〕「燃百福莊嚴臂七萬二千歲而以供養」 tr. “He burned his arms adorned with a hundred merits for seventy-two thousand years and thereby made an offering”〔0053c27〕; 「今藥王菩薩是也」 tr. “He is now the Bodhisattva Medicine King”〔0054a11〕The two passages together establish the person and the deed
“Many Treasures, with his whole body, bore witness”〔0001a15〕「此寶塔中有如來全身」 tr. “Within this jeweled stūpa is the Tathāgata's whole body”〔0032c08〕; 「多寶如來」 tr. “the Tathāgata Many Treasures”〔0032c19〕 and 「全身不散,如入禪定」 tr. “his whole body did not disperse, as though he had entered meditative concentration”〔0033b29〕“Bearing witness” is the preface's synthesis
“teaching the true Dharma, not being a false person”〔0001b09〕「爾乃集大眾,為說真實法」 tr. “Only then gather the assembly and teach them the true Dharma”〔0027a29〕; 「汝等當信佛之所說,言不虛妄」 tr. “You should trust what the Buddha teaches; his words are not false”〔0007a17〕These eight graphs combine two scriptural phrases; the present text has no such continuous wording
“the conjured city and the place of jewels”〔0001b11〕「此是化城耳」 tr. “This is only a conjured city”〔0027a19〕; 「當共至寶所」 tr. “Together we should proceed to the place of jewels”〔0027a22〕They follow each other within the same verse passage
“relying on Maitreya's earnestness to draw forth Mañjuśrī's guarded reserve”〔0001b11–0001b12〕Maitreya reflects 「以何因緣而有此瑞」 tr. “For what cause and condition has this portent appeared?”〔0002b25〕; Mañjuśrī concludes, 「我見燈明佛,本光瑞如此,以是知今佛,欲說法華經」 tr. “I saw the Buddha Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance: his former luminous portents were like these. From this I know that the present Buddha wishes to teach the Lotus Sutra”〔0005b16〕“Earnestness” and “guarded reserve” are Shenjiong's literary characterization, not the root scripture's judgment
“together aroused the aspiration in the presence of the Buddha King of Emptiness”〔0001b14〕「我與阿難等,於空王佛所,同時發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心」 tr. “Ānanda, I, and the others simultaneously aroused the aspiration for unsurpassed complete awakening in the presence of the Buddha King of Emptiness”〔0030a02〕Direct allusion
“the sixteen śrāmaṇeras all taught in the Buddha's place”〔0001b14〕「十六沙彌」 tr. “the sixteen śrāmaṇeras”〔0025a29〕 and 「皆共受持,諷誦通利」 tr. “all received and upheld it, reciting it fluently”〔0025b01〕, after which each ascended the Dharma seat and repeated the teaching“Taught in the Buddha's place” condenses their reception, preservation, and repeated exposition

B. Fish Traps, Rabbit Snares, and Ancient Buddhist Glosses

The preface says 「廢昔說之筌蹄;開示悟入,獲今家之魚兔」 tr. “set aside the fish traps and rabbit snares of earlier teachings; through opening, revealing, awakening to, and entering, obtain the fish and rabbit of the present teaching”〔0001a12–0001a13〕. This figure comes directly from the Zhuangzi and does not belong to the Buddhist works of the Taishō canon. Ancient Buddhist lexicography nevertheless attests the circulation of its meaning. T54n2129 explains 「〔筌者所以在魚得魚忘筌也〕」 tr. “[A fish trap is that by which one attends to the fish; after obtaining the fish, one forgets the trap]”〔0948a05〕 and 「〔蹄所以取兔得兔而忘蹄也〕」 tr. “[A snare is that by which one catches a rabbit; after obtaining the rabbit, one forgets the snare]”〔0948a05〕, and records that the Yupian treats ti as a net for rabbits. This can serve only as a lexical witness and cannot replace the original passage in the Zhuangzi.

The Fahua Wenjuji separately cites the Zhuangzi as 「得免忘蹄」 tr. “after obtaining the hare, forget the snare”〔0156a26〕 and says that the graph for a rabbit net would be preferable. The differences between hare and rabbit, and between the graphs for snare and net, are recorded only as the reading transmitted by Zhanran. The base text of this preface retains its own graphs.

C. The Jñānaprasthāna and the Six Auxiliary Treatises

The phrase 「輔《發智》之六足」 tr. “the six auxiliary treatises that support the Jñānaprasthāna”〔0001b12〕 may be read against the canonical catalogue in T55n2154. “The wording and meaning of this Jñānaprasthāna Treatise are complete; those who transmit and study it call it the body treatise”〔0620b03〕, and 「以餘六論各辯一支。 tr. “Each of the remaining six treatises explains one branch. Because they differ from the body, they are called feet”〔0620b04〕. T34n1719 likewise transmits, 「迦多演尼子造《發智論》,以前六義少如足、《發智》義多如身」 tr. “Kātyāyanīputra composed the Jñānaprasthāna Treatise; the meanings of the preceding six are few, like feet, while the meanings of the Jñānaprasthāna are many, like a body”〔0153a17〕, then questions its assignment and sequence of meanings〔0153a18–0153a23〕. That later discussion explains the “six feet” in the main text of the Introduction chapter, not Shenjiong's preface itself; it can only corroborate the semantics of body and feet.

The main text of the Introduction chapter also has the phrase from the Āgama, 「施、戒、慧、六度皆足也,」 tr. “giving, precepts, wisdom, and the six perfections are all ‘feet’”〔0001c11–0001c12〕. The Wenjuji expressly distinguishes this as an internal citation of the six perfections, not a reference to the six auxiliary treatises〔0153a05–0153a10〕. Identical graphs in different textual layers must not be conflated.

D. Titles of Commentaries and the History of Their Recording

Shenjiong says that Zhiyi 「常於陳主大極殿,對御講《仁王般若經》」 tr. “often lectured on the Prajñā of the Benevolent Kings before the sovereign in the Taiji Hall of the Chen ruler”〔0001a18–0001a20〕. The extant T08n0245 is titled 「佛說仁王般若波羅蜜經卷上」 tr.Buddha's Teaching of the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra for Humane Kings, first fascicle”〔0825a03〕 and attributed 「姚秦三藏鳩摩羅什譯」 tr. “translated by Tripiṭaka Master Kumārajīva of the Later Qin”〔0825a05〕. tr. “Meditation Master Zhiyi of Waguan was summoned to the Taiji Hall to expound the titles of the Dazhidu Lun and the Prajñā of the Benevolent Kings, then returned to Lingyao Monastery to lecture”〔0247c10–0247c12〕, followed by 「天子臨筵聽法。 tr. “The Son of Heaven attended the mat to hear the Dharma; the hundred officials all showed reverence”〔0247c13–0247c14〕. One transmission says that he lectured before the sovereign in the Taiji Hall; the other says that he explained the title there and then returned to the monastery to lecture. Both are recorded.

The preface further contrasts 「獨有《維摩疏》」 tr. “only the Commentary on the Vimalakīrti Sūtra”〔0001a22〕 and 「隋朝奉煬帝勅」 tr. “written in the Sui under an edict from Emperor Yang”〔0001a23〕 with Guanding's private record of the present work. The extant T38n1777 is titled 「維摩經玄疏卷第一」 tr.Profound Commentary on the Vimalakīrti Sūtra, first fascicle”〔0519a03〕 and attributed 「天台山修禪寺沙門智顗撰」 tr. “composed by the monk Zhiyi of Xiuchan Monastery on Mount Tiantai”〔0519a05〕. The preface to T38n1778 says, 「今茲疏文,即隋煬帝請天台大師出之」 tr. “The present commentary is precisely what Emperor Yang of the Sui requested the Tiantai master to produce”〔0562c05〕, and 「因令侍者隨錄奏聞」 tr. “He therefore had an attendant record it as it was spoken and submit it to the throne”〔0562c06–0562c07〕. These passages attest an ancient account of the Vimalakīrti commentary, the imperial request, and attendant recording. They cannot be read backward to make the Fahua Wenju an imperially commissioned composition, nor can the attendant record of the Vimalakīrti commentary be merged with the private record of the Lotus teaching.

E. Expressions for Which No Taishō Source Is Established

The phrase 「褒《春秋》之一言」 tr. “a single phrase praising the Spring and Autumn Annals”〔0001b12〕 expressly names a Chinese classic. For such ornate expressions as Yanmen's brush, the profundity of a dragon's frown, eye-floaters meeting sunlight, and curing illness while nurturing the jewel, no ancient verbatim scene with a precise location has been recovered. The wording of Shenjiong's preface is retained without inventing a source from the results of Buddhist-canon searches. “the hundred realms and thousand suchnesses”〔0001b10〕 occurs within this strict domain only in Shenjiong's preface; it therefore remains the language of a Tang preface and is not inserted backward into Zhiyi's opening explanation of the Introduction chapter.

4. Essential Explanations from the Wenjuji [the Mirror]

The continuous opening structure of the extant T34n1719 is as follows. After the fascicle title and Zhanran's attribution〔0151a03–0151a05〕, it immediately marks 「釋序品初」 tr. “the opening explanation of the Introduction chapter”〔0151a06〕. It next explains the title Wenju and the adjoining note on six difficulties〔0151a07–0151a19〕, then explains hearing at age twenty-seven, settlement at age sixty-nine, and addition and deletion〔0151b08–0151b14〕. Finally, from 「委釋」 tr. “explained in detail” it enters the main text of the Introduction chapter〔0151b29〕. After the alignment with the first section closes, it separately opens the common and specific introductions〔0158c10〕. This complete scene contains no return to explain Shenjiong's preface; no line-by-line meaning for the preface may therefore be supplied from the Wenjuji.

The Wenjuji's explanation of the adjoining note can nevertheless illuminate the transmission layer. It reads twenty-seven and sixty-nine as the ages of hearing and settlement and calls the interval 「始末四十餘年」 tr. “more than forty years from beginning to end”〔0151b10〕. It further explains addition as adding refutations of earlier masters and citations from scriptures and treatises, and deletion as removing prolixity and forming the literary style〔0151b13–0151b14〕. This is Zhanran's interpretation of the adjoining note on the fascicle title. It cannot be made into Shenjiong's own account, nor can it establish the genealogy between the Tianbao settled text and the version Zhang'an Guanding augmented and abridged.

5. Explanations of Various Masters

The strict domain contains no passage that separately lists masters' divisions of the sutra and debates their merits. Its principal divergent voice is Master Lang's diagnosis of six disorders in the movement of the extant text and the audience's request. The six are, in order: wording continuing while meaning breaks off; wording placed after the meaning that precedes it; prose first opening headings; later wording directly stating their meanings; verse first giving a number; and later wording failing to follow the order of the names〔0001a29–0001b02〕. The preface immediately arrests the diagnosis with 「然聖意難測,但仰信而已」 tr. “Yet the sage's intent is difficult to fathom; we can only look up to it in trust”〔0001b02–0001b03〕. It does not turn the diagnosis into authorization to revise doctrine.

The ancient biography T51n2068 and Shenjiong's preface both record Xuanlang's arrangement, but they can corroborate only the person and the scene. The extant T34n1719 contains no direct explanation of this preface. T51n2067 first marks an appendix〔0048a04〕 and then separately includes 「天台法華疏序」 tr. “Preface to the Tiantai Commentary on the Lotus”〔0048a05〕. These differing positions in the transmission do not establish which version came first or whether Zhanran ever saw the preface; they are noted without adjudicating.

6. Terminology

TermContext in the PrefacePlacement
Evidentiary teaching「證教即事而凝然」 tr. “the evidentiary teaching is present in phenomena while remaining still”〔0001a06〕Forms a parallel phrase with siddhānta; the preface gives no further numbered explanation
Siddhānta「悉檀隨緣而化物」 tr. “siddhānta follows conditions and transforms beings”〔0001a06〕The responsive dimension of teaching that follows conditions; no general explanation is added from this single phrase
Establishing the provisional; revealing the real「其施權也」 tr. “when it establishes the provisional”〔0001a09〕 and 「其顯實也」 tr. “when it reveals the real”〔0001a10〕Illustrated respectively by the Four Truths at the Deer Park and the transformation of the lands at Vulture Peak
Distant Origin; recent Trace「彰壽量之遠本,會伽耶之近迹」 tr. “reveals the distant Origin of the Lifespan and integrates the recent Trace at Gayā”〔0001a11–0001a12〕Follows the Lifespan of the Tathāgata chapter's contrast between ancient and recent buddhahood; it is not rendered as true and false
Interpretation through contemplating the mind「且如觀心釋,妙離有無」 tr. “Consider the interpretation through contemplating the mind: its wonder leaves existence and nonexistence behind”〔0001a20〕Shenjiong's description of Zhiyi's mode of explanation; the preface summarizes only its function
Five Meanings「敘名詮宗」 tr. “sets forth the name and explains the purport”〔0001a21〕 and 「五義覈理」 tr. “examines the principle through the Five Meanings”〔0001a21〕Intertextual with the explanation of the title in the Fahua Xuanyi; the preface does not unfold all five
Private record「灌頂法師私記」 tr. “privately recorded by Dharma Master Guanding”〔0001a23〕The preface author's statement about the relationship of recording; not a separate attribution in the extant fascicle heading
Setting in order「因夢所感,方始條倫」 tr. “only after receiving a response in a dream began to set it in order”〔0001b06–0001b07〕Arranging the textual sequence; the preface states that this did not involve arbitrary addition or deletion
Hundred realms and thousand suchnesses「百界千如宛同府契」 tr. “the hundred realms and thousand suchnesses correspond exactly like official tallies”〔0001b10〕Language in Shenjiong's exhortation to study; it cannot be inserted backward as Zhiyi's wording in the opening section

7. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward

The preface uses similes to weave a path from teaching to purport. Medicinal plants and trees receive the same rain yet grow differently, expressing the relation between a single teaching and different capacities. Fish trap and rabbit snare, fish and rabbit, separate earlier teachings from what is attained. Grass hut, conjured city, and place of jewels contrast a temporary rest with the destination. Finally, ford and bridge, official tally, and Dharma stream gather the question of how later students reach the purport through the words. Each image has its own ground and should not be flattened into a fixed table.

In cross-reading with the root sutra, “Introduction” provides Maitreya's question and Mañjuśrī's answer; “Skillful Means” provides the one great cause and condition and opening, revealing, awakening to, and entering; “The Parable of the Medicinal Herbs” provides the single rain and different receptions; “The Parable of the Conjured City” provides the conjured city and the place of jewels; and “The Lifespan of the Tathāgata” provides recent and distant buddhahood. The preface compresses phrases from many of the twenty-eight chapters at the head of the work. Its function is to introduce the whole, not to rewrite the scripture.

In cross-reading with the Fahua Xuanyi, the phrases 「敘名詮宗」 tr. “sets forth the name and explains the purport”〔0001a21〕 and 「五義覈理」 tr. “examines the principle through the Five Meanings”〔0001a21〕 point toward the gate of title exegesis. In cross-reading with the Mohe Zhiguan, 「觀心釋」 tr. “interpretation through contemplating the mind”〔0001a20〕 turns the explanation toward the contemplating mind. Each sister treatise retains its own domain of doctrinal classification or practice; the categories elaborated later in those works are not rewritten as Shenjiong's own words.

The Fahua Xuanzan, T34n1723, and the Fahua Wenju explain the same sutra as two ancient mirrors of the Faxiang and Tiantai traditions. They may be placed side by side as ancient commentarial witnesses without being substituted for one another. This preface does not cite the Xuanzan, so only its position as a parallel mirror is noted.

Sengzhao's language of Origin and Trace appears in the next unit, not as a citation in Shenjiong's preface. It actually comes from Zhao's preface at the head of the Commentary on the Vimalakīrti Sūtra and is reserved for comparison there against its original wording. The fish-and-rabbit simile in this preface rests on its ancient classical scene; Buddhist lexicography provides only a semantic parallel.

8. Placement of the Editions

This strict domain contains one electronic editorial reading set against the original Taishō graph and no main 【大】/【甲】 textual variants:

AnchorElectronic Editorial ReadingOriginal Taishō GraphShort Context
0001b04探賾不迷 — “probing the profound without losing the way”

This pair occurs within the account of Master Lang's textual settlement and belongs to the denominator of one pair for Shenjiong's preface; it is not moved into the opening section of the Introduction chapter. The title graph 「䟽」 tr. “commentary”〔0001a02〕 is CB00562, outside the ordinary character set. This edition retains the base graph rather than silently regularizing it to the common form shu.

Page anchors always follow the nearest preceding Taishō line marker containing the first graph of the quoted passage. A quotation spanning lines bears its opening and closing lines. Thus 「迺是灌頂法師私記,合二十卷」 tr. “It was privately recorded by Dharma Master Guanding and comprises twenty half-fascicles” begins at〔0001a23〕 and continues to〔0001a24〕. Title, attribution, and main text all fall within the strict domain but are recorded as three distinct layers. The complete work's contents contain one prefatory unit, twenty-eight chapter explanations, and fourteen continuation headings for long chapters. “Introduction” is the only first-level chapter title without the prefixed graph for “explanation”; the other twenty-seven have the form “Explanation of Chapter X.” This unit uses that fact only to locate the prefatory material and does not turn the contents structure into a doctrinal determination.
