Once skillful means have served their course, should they be discarded? We often imagine skillful means as temporary substitutes: because the real answer cannot yet be taught, an easier account must first be given. Once the truth appears, everything taught before can simply be voided.
The Skillful Means chapter does not reveal the one vehicle in this way.
The Buddha first sees how much living beings can bear. If the five thousand remained to hear the extensive teaching, their fixed attachments would instead lead them to slander it, and so he does not prevent them from leaving. Those able to hear now are admonished to listen closely, reflect well, and practice accordingly. For those unable to accept it today, what they heard before does not disappear; it can still become a condition for their deliverance later.
Skillful means therefore do not discount the real. They make a road between living beings and the real possible.
The road has many entrances, yet its destination is not thereby divided. When the Buddha teaches three vehicles according to faculties, he does not install living beings forever at three destinations. Opening and revealing skillful means does not announce that everything before was wrong. It enables people to see clearly that all those roads were originally intended to lead to the one buddha vehicle.
The value of a gateway is not that one must continue embracing it forever after entering the room. Nor does it lie in turning back after entry to tear it down and mock those still outside. Its value is that the people who truly need it can pass through.
This also illuminates our own attachments. Sometimes we cling to answers, insisting that everyone accept them at once. At other times we cling to methods, treating a stage that once helped us as the sole ultimate. The first forgets living beings' capacities; the second forgets the destination of the road.
The four-buddha chapter opens the view across past, future, and present. The causes and conditions, parables, and words used by the buddhas are immeasurable, yet the work they intend to accomplish is the same. Times differ, beings differ, and entrances differ; the original intent to benefit and bring beings peace and to enable them ultimately to enter the Buddha's knowledge and vision does not change.
The next time you want to make one method absolute, or rush to discard an old method entirely, ask: Whom is it helping now? Does it leave people standing at the gateway, or guide them truly through?
When skillful means become an endpoint, they obscure the real. When they are truthfully opened, what lies within the gateway has always been the one vehicle.

I. The Five Sections of the First-Round Dharma-Teaching and the Three Sections of Prose
The first round proceeds principally through direct Dharma-teaching, and its scriptural text as a whole is divided into five sections. First, from the point where Śāriputra has already made three earnest requests and the Buddha asks how he could fail to speak, through the end of this fascicle, is the formal Dharma-teaching. Second, from the beginning of the next fascicle through the end of the verses, is Śāriputra's understanding. Third, from the Buddha's declaration among the assembly of gods, humans, and others through his statement that this is what the buddhas protect and keep in mind, is the Buddha's confirmation of Śāriputra's understanding. Fourth, from the Buddha's telling Śāriputra what will happen in a future age through the instruction that he should rejoice in himself, is the prediction bestowed upon him. Fifth, from the fourfold assembly's hearing through everyone's dedication of all merit to the buddha path, is the fourfold assembly's rejoicing.
The Dharma-teaching in the first section itself has prose and verse. The prose is divided into three: the Buddha's assent to teach, Śāriputra's reception of the Buddha's intent, and the formal teaching. The assent to teach likewise has three layers: first, assenting in response to Śāriputra's request; second, admonishing him to listen well and assenting; and third, distinguishing and removing those unable to receive the teaching and then assenting.
The Buddha's statement that Śāriputra has now requested the Dharma three times is the responsive assent. His instruction to listen carefully now is the admonitory assent. Listening carefully corresponds to wisdom born of hearing; reflecting well corresponds to wisdom born of reflection; and keeping what one has heard and reflected upon continually in mind corresponds to wisdom born of cultivation. The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says that four wholesome dharmas are causes of great nirvāṇa. Here the treatise identifies only the spiritual friend among them as the Tathāgata; the others can be understood from the wording and meaning.
When the Buddha speaks these words, the text enters the assent made after distinguishing the assembly. Because the five thousand are still seated, the Tathāgata had previously stopped the teaching three times. Now, just as he is about to assent to teach extensively, he uses his awe-inspiring power to cause them to leave. This is why it is called distinguishing the assembly.
II. Why the Five Thousand Leave the Assembly
The treatise explains the faults of the five thousand from three perspectives. First, the five turbidities create many obstructions, so their offenses are called grave. Second, they are attached to the Lesser Vehicle and use a lesser Dharma to conceal the great Dharma, so their attachment is called deep-rooted. Third, although they have not attained, they suppose that they have, so they are called persons of overweening pride: although they have not attained the three fruits, they suppose that they have, and although they have not realized the stage beyond training, they suppose that they have realized it. Thus, the scripture's words “they had faults such as these” do not refer to pride alone, but to the three faults of obstruction, attachment, and pride.
The Buddha remains silent and does not restrain them because, although he previously taught opening the three to reveal the one, the wording was brief and the meaning still concealed; the five thousand therefore had not yet slandered it. What they had already heard was also sufficient to become a later cause and condition like the jewel sewn into a robe. By leaving now they can avoid slandering the Dharma, so leaving benefits them. If they remained to hear the extensive teaching that opens the three and reveals the one, its content would run contrary to their attachments and they would instead slander it, so remaining would harm them. The Buddha therefore does not prevent their departure.
The scripture says that the assembly is now free of branches and leaves. Branches and leaves are fine, peripheral parts that cannot serve as useful timber. What these people cling to is a provisional means within provisional means; in relation to the great Dharma, they are not yet vessels capable of receiving it. The Large Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra says that those who discard the root and cling to branches and leaves are not wise; this is precisely its meaning here.
The scripture also says that it is well that they have withdrawn. Because they used a lesser Dharma to conceal themselves and also prevented others from receiving the illumination of the great Dharma, their withdrawal now leaves them without the fault of slandering the Dharma and without the fault of obstructing others. Thus the Buddha says it is well. Before the branches and leaves had withdrawn, the Tathāgata stopped three times; because the genuine members of the assembly single-mindedly wished to hear, Śāriputra requested the Dharma four times. Teacher and disciple both perceive the faculties of the assembly. It is not that the Buddha begrudges the Dharma or that Śāriputra presses his request in vain.
III. Why Supernatural Power Is Not Used to Keep Them There
Someone asks: The Buddha possesses great compassion. Why does he not use supernatural power to keep the five thousand seated while making them unable to hear, like the śrāvakas in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra? Or why does he not force the profound Dharma upon them even against their will, as with the poisonous drum or Bodhisattva Root of Joy's teaching to the bhikṣu Superior Intent?
The answer is that each way of acting has its own rationale. Only at the end of the Avataṃsaka assembly does a gradual path begin to be opened for the śrāvakas. At that time, their Lesser Vehicle attachments have not yet been broken, so although they remain seated, they are cut off from what is seen and heard. Here, however, the buddhas are about to teach the real after a very long time. They are precisely about to abolish the temporary stopping place of the conjured city and break down the narrow shelter of the grass hut. Those unable to receive the teaching must therefore be distinguished and removed.
If a person would slander whether leaving or remaining, one should forcefully teach that person as Bodhisattva Root of Joy did. But the five thousand before the Buddha benefit by leaving, so how could he suddenly force them to remain? Remaining would harm them, so how could he suddenly prevent them from going? Root of Joy teaches forcefully out of loving-kindness; the Tathāgata sends them away out of compassion. Each treatment has its own reason.
IV. If They Cannot Receive It Now, Will They Still Benefit Later?
Someone further asks: The five thousand gained no benefit even while seated. What benefit could they gain after leaving?
The answer is that these are not people who can directly receive the formal teaching now. Rather, they form causes and conditions for liberation at a later time, as already explained above. In the past, during the time of the Buddha Great Universal Wisdom Excellence, immeasurable living beings likewise gave rise to doubts. Life after life they remained together with their teacher, and now they have all attained liberation. The same is true of these five thousand.
When the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra was taught, fifteen thousand koṭis of people did not give rise to faith in the scriptural Dharma, yet the treatise says that they would still give rise to faith in the future. By analogy, the benefit of the five thousand need not wait until an extremely distant time. The Sūtra of Golden Light says that there are two kinds of people in Jambudvīpa, which is also used to express the same meaning. The text transmitted in this treatise reads “fifteen thousand koṭis”; the different figure in the present edition is discussed separately in the textual notes.
When the Buddha again tells Śāriputra to listen well, he concludes the three kinds of assent. Śāriputra's reception of the Buddha's intent is clear in the original wording and meaning and requires no separate analysis.
V. From the Brief Teaching to the Extensive Teaching
Beginning with the scripture's words “Such a wondrous Dharma,” the text enters the formal extensive teaching and is divided into two chapters. The first is the four-buddha chapter, which extensively teaches the provisional and the real of the buddhas in general that were previously presented. The second is the Śākyamuni chapter, which extensively teaches the provisional and the real of Śākyamuni Buddha that were previously presented.
The earlier passage contains few sentences, so its wording is brief. It refers only generally to the buddhas, so its persons are brief. It only summarizes the opening of the three vehicles and revelation of the one vehicle, so its meaning is brief. Here the phrases and passages increase, so the wording is extensive. Five kinds of buddha are listed, so the persons are extensive. Six meanings are listed, so the meaning is extensive.
The six meanings are, in order: first, praising the rarity of the Dharma-gate; second, declaring that the Buddha's words contain no falsehood or error; third, opening provisional means; fourth, revealing the real; fifth, citing the five turbidities to explain why the three vehicles had to be established; and sixth, distinguishing the false and encouraging the genuine. Praising the Dharma-gate causes people to give rise to reverence. Declaring the absence of falsehood and error stops their slander of the Buddha's words. Opening provisional means keeps them from clinging to a lesser Dharma. Revealing the real causes them to awaken to the great Dharma. Citing the five turbidities makes clear why the Buddha could not avoid teaching the three vehicles. Distinguishing the false and encouraging the genuine makes clear that those capable of receiving the teaching must be genuine.
Each of the five buddha chapters should originally possess all six meanings. In the scriptural text, however, the meanings appear reciprocally in earlier and later chapters and need not be repeated one by one in every chapter. This is the Tathāgata's skillful teaching: although the wording is brief, the meaning is complete, and it goes directly to what must be explained without becoming cumbersome. The sequence in which the six meanings appear in the individual chapters is likewise not fixed; the rest can be understood accordingly.
VI. The Four Meanings of the General-Buddha Chapter and Praise of the Rare Dharma
The four-buddha chapter is divided into two parts: first the buddhas are discussed generally, and then the buddhas of the past, future, and present are listed separately. The general-buddha chapter should possess all six meanings, but four are explicitly stated here: first, praise of the Dharma; second, absence of falsehood; third, opening provisional means; and fourth, revealing the real. The two omitted meanings—using the five turbidities to explain the provisional and distinguishing the false to encourage the genuine—point ahead to the Śākyamuni chapter.
The passage praising the Dharma praises it through both Dharma and simile. All buddhas appear alike in an age of the five turbidities and must, like Śākyamuni, first open the three vehicles. Only after more than forty years do they reveal the real. Because they explicitly teach it just once after a very long time, the scripture says they speak only when the proper time arrives. There are three reasons it was not taught for so long: the listeners were not yet capable of receiving it; the time for teaching had not yet arrived; and the five thousand had not yet left. Now there are three corresponding conditions: the listeners are capable of receiving it; the time has arrived; and the five thousand have left. The Buddha therefore resolves to teach the Great Vehicle, and the text says, “only then does he speak it.”
Udumbara is translated as “auspicious marvel.” It appears once every three thousand years, and when it appears, a wheel-turning king of the golden wheel emerges in the world. This simile means that only after the faculties for the three vehicles have been trained and matured does the Buddha teach the wondrous Dharma and bestow predictions that people will become Dharma kings. It is also like passing through the three flavors of curds, raw butter, and clarified butter before teaching the Dharma-flavor of ghee. The remaining meanings can be inferred from these.
From the perspective of contemplating the mind, contemplating this very mind as the middle way is called an auspicious sign. Because this contemplation penetrates all dharmas and reaches the true aspect, it is called marvelous. The remaining meanings can be understood accordingly.
VII. Absence of Falsehood and Opening Provisional Means
When the Buddha exhorts the assembly to believe, he exhorts them to trust a Dharma without falsehood. The principle revealed now is exceedingly profound and differs from what they heard in the past. The words spoken now are exceedingly wondrous and run contrary to the former teachings. The practice undertaken now is exceedingly universal and conflicts with former practice. The people transformed now are exceedingly excellent, surpassing those previously regarded as inferior. These still refer to the four coarse aspects of principle, words, practice, and persons associated with the poor son's self-description as a hired laborer; all are now opened and revealed as wondrous. Living beings may therefore suspect that the Buddha's earlier and later teachings contradict each other, so he exhorts them to believe. Those who can believe are persons free from falsehood; what they believe and what is taught is a Dharma free from falsehood.
Beginning with the scripture's statement that the buddhas teach the Dharma according to what is appropriate, the text opens provisional means in three sections: opening, explaining, and concluding.
First, the buddha path establishes provisional means in accord with what is appropriate for three kinds of faculty and is therefore said to accord with what is suitable. Yet the Buddha's own intent is directed toward the real, which living beings cannot understand; thus the scripture says that his intent is difficult to understand.
Second, the words “Why is this?” introduce a further explanation. The treatise cites Śākyamuni Buddha's own power of provisional means to explain how the buddhas in general employ provisional means. Because the buddhas share the same skillful wisdom, this buddha is used to explain those buddhas. Śākyamuni's statement that he uses innumerable provisional means, various causes and conditions, similes, and expressions to expound the dharmas likewise shows that all buddhas open the provisional in this same manner.
Third, the scriptural statement that this Dharma cannot be understood through thought and discrimination has two possible affiliations. If taken as the conclusion to opening the provisional, it says that the Buddha's intent is difficult to know and can be thoroughly understood only by buddhas together with buddhas. Those who receive the teaching suppose that there are three vehicles, while the buddhas know that in fact there is only one. If taken as the opening statement of revealing the real, it belongs to the text that follows.
VIII. The Five Sections of Revealing the Real and the Causes and Conditions of the One Great Matter
Revealing the real is divided into five: first, indicating the supreme persons and Dharma; second, indicating the original intent for which the buddhas appear in the world; third, raising the topic again; fourth, giving the formal explanation; and fifth, concluding and establishing the meaning.
First, the scripture presents a Dharma free from discrimination that only a buddha can know. A buddha knows the Dharma free from discrimination through nondiscriminating wisdom. The knowing buddha and the Dharma known are presented together; this is the revelation of the real Dharma.
Second, the original intent for appearing in the world is indicated, first through a general explanation and then through an explanation of the individual words. The general explanation is this: the buddhas awaken to the aspect of things just as they are, ride upon the real path, and respond by appearing in the world solely to enable living beings to attain that same true aspect. The buddhas appear only for this matter and no other. Apart from the true mark of all dharmas, everything else in this context of the provisional and the real is called the work of Māra.
The individual words are explained as follows. “One” is the one true aspect; it is not five, three, seven, or nine, and is therefore called one. Its nature is vast and comprehensive, encompassing five, three, seven, and nine, so it is called great. It is the rite enacted by the buddhas in appearing in the world, so it is called a matter. Living beings possess faculties capable of affecting a buddha, so they are called the cause. A buddha responds by appearing in accordance with the faculties of living beings, so he is called the condition. This is the original intent for which the buddhas appear in the world.
Since the original intent lies in the one, why are three vehicles now opened? The three are opened to serve as inducements toward the one vehicle, like someone who wishes to acquire everything another person possesses and therefore first gives that person something. Although a buddha teaches various paths, what he truly acts for remains the one vehicle.
Third, when the scripture again asks Śāriputra what the one great matter is, it raises the topic anew before analyzing and explaining it, thereby opening the explanation. Because this great matter is also honored by the Buddha, he speaks of it repeatedly. As the Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom says, a royal father delights in hearing the name of the crown prince and never tires of repeating it. The treatise speaks only of a royal father and crown prince and gives no separate names.
IX. Three Interpretations: the Old Four Ones, Guangzhai, and the Masters of the Treatise on the Grounds
Fourth, in giving the formal explanation, the interpretations of various masters are presented first.
An old interpretation explains the four ones as one effect, one class of persons, one teaching, and one cause. The first two sentences are explained from the perspective of the teacher, while the latter two are explained from the perspective of those receiving the teaching. From the teacher's perspective, first briefly presenting the principle of the effect in the Cause Gate is called opening the Buddha's knowledge and vision; later extensively revealing the principle of the effect in the Effect Gate is called showing the Buddha's knowledge and vision. From the recipients' perspective, first gaining a brief understanding in the Cause Gate is called awakening, while later extensively entering the purport of the principle in the Effect Gate is called entering.
The present treatise does not adopt this explanation. All four scriptural sentences say that the action is undertaken for living beings, and their meaning principally concerns the present faculties' attainment of benefit, not the transforming lord himself. How, then, can the two sentences on opening and showing be assigned to the teaching buddha? At this moment the Dharma is being taught in the Cause Gate and the three are being opened to reveal the one. How could two sentences be assigned in advance to the Effect Gate? The causes and conditions for the Effect Gate have not yet assembled, so it cannot be taught beforehand. According to the old explanation, the first appearance of the six auspicious signs, before the Buddha has even emerged from samādhi, would already have to be the brief teaching, while the time before the five thousand have left would have to be the extensive teaching. Yet neither passage is such a teaching. The bodhisattvas from below have not yet emerged and the buddhas who are Śākyamuni's emanations have not yet assembled. How can two sentences in the Cause Gate be made to refer to the Effect Gate?
Guangzhai says that the first sentence contains the two meanings of opening by removing and opening by producing. The three vehicles formerly taught as provisional means enable people to remove the five turbidities, thereby opening forth the Great Vehicle principle of awakening to the Buddha's knowledge and vision. Although this principle was previously opened and taught to people, its rationale was not explained, so it is shown again, causing people to develop wisdom through hearing. Although they have heard, they have not yet awakened, so it is further analyzed extensively, causing them to develop wisdom through reflection. Once they have gained the purport through faith and awakening, they are caused to arouse the resolve to train in the Buddha's knowledge and vision, attain wisdom through cultivation, and enter the principle of the Buddha's knowledge and vision.
The present treatise does not adopt this either. Since it follows the old interpretation in defining the topic as the one effect, all four sentences should explain the effect. How can wisdom through hearing, reflection, and cultivation from the causal stage be used in their explanation, contradicting the causal and resultant stages before and after? Moreover, there are many kinds of the three wisdoms. Because this scripture precisely refutes the determinate attachments of the two vehicles, the three wisdoms of the Tripiṭaka Teaching cannot be adopted. If the provisional means of bodhisattvas are the same as those of the two vehicles, they express only the meaning of the Shared Teaching and cannot be adopted either. If the three wisdoms of the Distinct Teaching are intended, they are a bodhisattva Dharma and not a buddha Dharma. If the three wisdoms of the Perfect Teaching are said to open the Buddha's knowledge and vision, they still cannot appropriately resolve the scriptural text. If some other three wisdoms are taken, the interpretation strays even farther from the scripture. If the Perfect Teaching's three wisdoms are retained, the originally asserted one effect cannot be established. None of these paths can be adopted; the rest can be inferred accordingly.
The masters of the Treatise on the Grounds say that the eightfold understanding attained in the presence of buddhas numerous as the sands of the fifth Ganges River is the stage of the thirty minds and corresponds to opening. From the first through the sixth ground, the delusions of views and thought are exhausted and understanding gradually becomes clear; these correspond to showing. On the seventh and eighth grounds, emptiness and existence are contemplated together without obstruction; these correspond to awakening. The tenth ground corresponds to entering, and they cite a scripture saying that the tenth ground is called seeing with the eyes.
The present treatise does not adopt this either. This scripture teaches the opening of the Buddha's knowledge and vision. A buddha knows through the wisdom of all modes and sees with the buddha-eye; only the opening and development of such wisdom and vision is called the Buddha's knowledge and vision. The eightfold understanding attained in the presence of buddhas numerous as the sands of the fifth Ganges River has not yet entered the grounds. How could it be called opening? This opening does not open the buddha-eye, and this knowledge is not the knowledge of the wisdom of all modes. It does not accord with the scripture.
X. Ten Further Interpretations and Their Point-by-Point Refutation
Someone else says that the first sentence is the principle and the latter three are its brief explanation. Because the eight sufferings and five turbidities conceal the future buddha-fruit, this is called closed. Now the teaching removes the five turbidities and the knowledge and vision of the buddha-fruit become manifest, so this is called open; because defilements are removed and the principle appears, it is called purity. The latter three sentences are then correlated with hearing, reflection, and cultivation. The present treatise says that the objections to this school are the same as those above.
Another person correlates the separate teachings of the three vehicles with opening, the teaching shared by the three vehicles with showing, the disparagement of the Lesser and praise of the Great with awakening, and the Lotus Sūtra with entering. Yet another correlates the Shared Teaching of the three vehicles with opening, disparagement and praise with showing, the Sūtra of Immeasurable Meanings with awakening, and the Lotus Sūtra with entering. Both interpretations split three sentences off into other scriptures and leave only one for the Lotus. The treatise judges this to be a fragmented and forced construction that injures and falsely imputes the scripture's intent; the fault is grave.
Another person says that the thirty minds are opening, the first through sixth grounds are showing, the seventh through ninth grounds are awakening, and the tenth ground is entering. The present treatise says that this takes a peripheral meaning from the Shared Teaching and inserts the meaning of the Distinct Teaching. It still does not reveal what is extraordinary about the Lotus; how could it merit such praise from the scripture?
Another person cites the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, the Sūtra of the Jeweled Necklace, the Sūtra for Humane Kings, the Summary of the Great Vehicle, and the Treatise on the Seventeen Grounds, saying that ordinary beings and others also have fifty-two stages and that there are forty minds before the grounds. Why are these not used? The present treatise says that this person misquotes the Avataṃsaka, because the Avataṃsaka does not teach the ten faiths. Even if other classes of scripture teach forty minds before the grounds, none of these stages is a path that severs delusion. They cannot be used to explain the opening of the Buddha's knowledge and vision; these are merely groundless words.
Another person cites the Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom, saying that the general and specific aspects of the four wisdoms are attained simultaneously. The present treatise says that this cannot explain opening, showing, awakening, and entering. The four sentences appear to have shallow and deep levels, while the four wisdoms themselves are lofty. Opening and showing can extend through both shallow and deep levels and cannot be compared merely because the four wisdoms occur simultaneously. This school sees only the simultaneity of the four wisdoms stated in the Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom and fails to see that opening and showing themselves can also be complete simultaneously.
Another person says that neither emptiness nor existence is opening, the capacity for emptiness and existence is showing, the nonduality of emptiness and existence is awakening, and understanding the twofold character of the nondual is entering. The present treatise says that this only explains the two truths of emptiness and existence. It cannot even draw the two vehicles out, so how could it be the One Vehicle purport of the Lotus?
Another person says that penetrating the principle of the three truths is opening, clearly distinguishing the three truths is showing, not seeing the three truths as either one or different is awakening, and naturally following their flow is entering. The present treatise says that this interpretation unfolds the three truths sequentially and still does not go beyond a bodhisattva Dharma. How could it be called a buddha Dharma?
Another person says that “knowledge” in the Buddha's knowledge and vision is the general aspect known by all-wisdom, while “vision” is the specific aspect known by the wisdom of all modes. The present treatise says that the Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom assigns all-wisdom to śrāvaka wisdom, path-wisdom to bodhisattva wisdom, and the wisdom of all modes to buddha-wisdom. These are three wisdoms arranged separately, not three wisdoms present together in one mind. How could the knowledge of the two vehicles be joined to the vision of the buddha of the Distinct Teaching and used to explain the knowledge and vision of the buddha of the Perfect Teaching?
Finally, another person says that the exhaustion-wisdom in which afflictions are completely severed and purified is called knowledge, while the nonarising-wisdom in which the afflictive burdens of cause and effect will ultimately never arise again is called vision. The present treatise says that this takes the name and doctrine of a buddha as taught by the Shared school and uses them to explain the ultimate buddha; it is wholly inapplicable. The masters above randomly take phrases from different scriptures and none sees the great intent of the Lotus.
XI. Three Rounds of Explanation in the Treatise on the Lotus Sutra
The Treatise on the Lotus Sutra first explains four meanings in relation to the three vehicles. First, opening means unsurpassed: apart from all-wisdom there is no other matter. The scripture says that the Buddha appears in the world to open the Buddha's knowledge and vision and enable living beings to attain purity. Second, showing means sameness: the buddha-nature and Dharma-body of śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and buddhas are equal. The scripture says that the Buddha appears in the world to show living beings the Buddha's knowledge and vision because there is no difference in the buddha-nature and Dharma-body. Third, awakening means not knowing: the two vehicles do not know that ultimately there is only the one buddha vehicle, and now they are caused to know. Fourth, entering means causing people to realize the ground of nonretrogression and manifesting the activity of immeasurable wisdom.
The sequence of the treatise is this: first it says that the Buddha's knowledge and vision is unsurpassed. People might suppose, however, that the Buddha alone possesses it, so the second point says that the three vehicles alike possess the buddha-nature and Dharma-body. Although they possess these equally, the two vehicles are still unaware of it, so the third point causes them to know. Although they know, they have not yet attained nonretrogression, so the fourth causes them to realize nonretrogression.
The second round explains the passage in relation to bodhisattvas. Opening is the same as in the first round. Showing causes bodhisattvas whose minds contain doubts to know how to practice in accord with reality. Awakening causes those who have not yet aroused the mind of bodhi to arouse it. Entering causes those who have already aroused the mind of bodhi to enter the true Dharma.
The third round explains the passage in relation to ordinary beings. Opening is again as above. Showing reveals that ordinary beings possess the Dharma-body and buddha-nature. Awakening causes non-Buddhist living beings to awaken. Entering causes them to enter great bodhi.
XII. The Present Master's Explanation: from Immeasurable Ones to Ten Kinds of One and the Four Ones
The present master's four explanations do not contradict the Treatise on the Lotus Sutra. The treatise explains each sentence separately, while the present master gives four explanations within a single sentence. The treatise speaks of realizing the ground of nonretrogression; the present master explains this through the four stages. The treatise says that the Tathāgata can realize the real; the present master explains this through the four wisdoms. The treatise speaks of sameness; the present master explains it through contemplating the mind. The treatise speaks of not knowing the ultimate place; the present master explains it through the four gateways. The remaining correspondences can be understood accordingly.
In the present explanation of revealing the real, one can extensively explain immeasurable dharmas as all being one. Following the ten subtleties of the Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sutra, these become ten kinds of one. If provisionally reconciled with the old interpretation, they can be explained briefly as the four ones. With respect to immeasurable ones, no single form or fragrance is anything other than the middle way; the meaning is evident. If the ten kinds of one are correlated one by one with the scripture, the ten meanings are all present even though the scriptural wording does not arrange them entirely in sequence.
The scripture's statement that the Buddha expounds the dharmas through innumerable provisional means and various causes and conditions still belongs to the passage opening the provisional. The following statement that this Dharma cannot be understood through thought and discrimination reveals one principle. Only buddhas can know it, revealing one wisdom. The words “only for the sake of one great matter” reveal one practice: “one” is principle, “great” is wisdom, and “matter” is practice. Principle is illuminated by wisdom, and wisdom in turn guides practice. The Buddha's knowledge and vision means that wisdom knows the principle and the buddha-eye sees the truth. Because opening, showing, awakening, and entering are extensively distinguished as the forty stages, these words reveal one set of stages.
The conclusion to the four sentences through “one great matter” further reveals the oneness of the three dharmas: “one” is the Dharma-body, “great” is prajñā, and “matter” is liberation; together they form the secret treasury. The Buddha's appearance in the world reveals one stimulus-and-response. Teaching only bodhisattvas reveals one retinue. Everything he does reveals one spiritual power. Using only the Buddha's knowledge and vision to cause living beings to be shown it and awaken to it reveals one benefit. Teaching the Dharma to living beings only through the one buddha vehicle reveals one teaching. Scripture and meaning correspond like the matching halves of a tally.
If explained briefly through the four ones, the present and old interpretations have the same number but different meanings. The old school calls the first the one effect; the present master calls it one principle. In terms of meaning, without one principle all matters would become inverted, turning into Māra's teaching rather than a buddha scripture. In terms of wording, the scripture speaks of the Buddha's knowledge and vision, and the present explanation takes what the Buddha knows and sees: what is seen is the truth, and what is known is the object. The object and truth are the principle of the true aspect, so this is called one principle. The old school calls the next one cause; the present master calls it one practice. Cause indicates only a single stage, while practice includes both cause and effect, so it is called one practice. The names one class of persons and one teaching are the same as in the old school.
XIII. The First Explanation of One Principle: the Four Stages
The scripture will now be explained briefly through the four ones. One principle is explained first, using four approaches: first, the four stages; second, the four wisdoms; third, the four gateways; and fourth, contemplating the mind.
First, the four stages. The object of truth cannot be known and seen through ordinary knowledge and vision; it must be known and seen through wisdom and the eye. The two wisdoms and four eyes cannot know and see it ultimately; only the wisdom of all modes and the buddha-eye can do so. Yet the scripture says that living beings are caused to open the Buddha's knowledge and vision, not merely that the Buddha-fruit itself knows and sees. To speak solely of the Buddha-fruit loses the side of living beings; to speak solely of living beings leaves no Buddha's knowledge and vision. Neither side can therefore be taken in isolation.
Although practitioners of the three teachings are also living beings, they do not yet possess the buddha-eye and buddha-wisdom and cannot know and see the true aspect. People in the four stages of the Perfect Teaching are likewise living beings, yet they have already acquired a share of the buddha-eye and buddha-wisdom. They therefore fulfill both the meaning of living beings and the meaning of the Buddha's knowledge and vision, so the four stages are used to explain one principle. In the auspicious signs, the heavens rain four kinds of flowers, indicating that the myriad wholesome deeds all converge and enter the four stages. Living beings ride the flowers of the four stages toward the buddha-fruit; therefore the principle is revealed through the stages.
First, opening corresponds to the ten abodes. At the first of the ten abodes, one first breaks ignorance, opens the tathāgata treasury, and sees the principle of the true aspect. The inherently possessed principle of one's nature is stained and concealed by the delusions of the Shared and Distinct Teachings and is difficult to know. Although a beginner can have perfect faith, perfect reception, and perfect mastery, that person cannot yet sever delusion, so this is not called opening. Inwardly, contemplative practice is intensified; outwardly, the rain of Dharma assists its completion. The delusions that conceal the principle are broken, and the real virtue of cultivation and the original nature are revealed. Knowledge and vision become bright and open, like the sun rising, darkness vanishing, and the eye becoming able to function. This is called opening. Because delusion is broken through cultivation dependent upon conditions, living beings are said to be caused to attain purity. The Sūtra for Humane Kings says that entering the prajñā of principle is called abiding; this means abiding in the stage of the small white flower of the ten abodes.
Second, showing corresponds to the ten practices. Once the obstructing delusions have been removed, the essence of knowledge and vision appears. This essence possesses the myriad virtues, and all the virtues of the Dharma-realm are shown with clarity. Thus it is called showing; this is the stage of the great white flower of the ten practices.
Third, awakening corresponds to the ten dedications. Once obstructions have been removed, the essence appears and the practices of the Dharma-realm become clear. Event and principle interpenetrate, and there are no longer two different destinations. The Summary of the Great Vehicle speaks of wisdom in accord with principle and wisdom in accord with measure. Here principle and measure are nondual, so this is called awakening; this is the stage of the small red flower of the ten dedications.
Fourth, entering corresponds to the ten grounds. Once event and principle have interpenetrated, one can function freely and without obstruction, flowing naturally from the letter a to the letter ḍha and entering the ocean of sarvajñā. As the Summary of the Great Vehicle says, one penetrates freely in accord with principle and measure. Knowledge and vision in accord with measure can sustain the myriad virtues; knowledge and vision in accord with principle can ward off all delusions. This is the stage of the great red flower of the ten grounds.
Yet within the perfectly subtle stages, the merit of all forty-one grounds is complete in any one stage. Opening itself already possesses showing, awakening, and entering; these are not four mutually separate minds. With respect to knowledge and vision in accord with principle, no shallow or deep aspects can be distinguished. The four stages are distinguished only to illuminate knowledge and vision in accord with measure. The mind at first arousal and the ultimate mind do not differ in essence, yet the present treatise still says that the former mind is more difficult. Since there is difficulty and ease, the beginning and ultimate minds differ in brightness and darkness, shallowness and depth. The moon's body is round both at first and last, yet the new moon and full moon differ in brightness. The knowledge and vision of all four stages illuminates the true aspect, yet one can still speak of the difference between opening and entering. The rest can be inferred accordingly.
XIV. Three Further Explanations of One Principle and Their Forward and Reverse Arising
Second, the four wisdoms. Here the four wisdoms of the Perfect Teaching must be correlated with the four stages; the Shared Teaching interpretation in the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras is not followed.
First, path-wisdom sees the reality of the path, and within that reality the Buddha's knowledge and vision is opened. Second, wisdom of path varieties knows the paths, categories, understandings, and deluded aspects of each of the ten Dharma-realms, thereby showing the Buddha's knowledge and vision in each. Third, all-wisdom knows that all dharmas share the single aspect of quiescent extinction; that quiescent extinction is awakening to the Buddha's knowledge and vision. Fourth, the wisdom of all modes both knows that all dharmas share the single aspect of quiescent extinction and distinguishes the varied features of their kinds of practice; this is entering the Buddha's knowledge and vision.
A second set of correlations may also be made. Path-wisdom accords with principle and is called opening. Wisdom of path varieties accords with measure and is called showing. All-wisdom makes principle and measure nondual and is called awakening. The wisdom of all modes illuminates both principle and measure and is called entering. This too distinguishes shallow and deep for purposes of explanation within the real principle, which in itself has no shallow or deep.
Third, the four gateways explain the four sentences horizontally. In the gateway of emptiness, one emptiness means that all is empty; this corresponds to opening. In the gateway of existence, one existence means that all exists; this corresponds to showing. In the gateway of both emptiness and existence, all is both empty and existent; this corresponds to awakening. In the gateway of neither emptiness nor existence, all is neither empty nor existent; this corresponds to entering. The gateways capable of reaching the principle are four, but the principle reached is one. Opening, showing, awakening, and entering are the gateways that penetrate; what is known and seen is the principle penetrated.
Fourth, contemplating the mind. Contemplating the inconceivable principle of the three truths inherent in the nature of the mind, with this contemplation clear and pure, is called opening. Although inconceivable, emptiness, provisional existence, and the middle can nevertheless be distinguished clearly without confusion; this is called showing. Emptiness, provisional existence, and the middle are three and yet one, one and yet three; this is called awakening. Emptiness, provisional existence, and the middle are not three fixed entities, yet all three are simultaneously illuminated; this is called entering. These are the distinctions of opening, showing, awakening, and entering within the three contemplations in one mind.
Why are these four explanations given? In forward sequence: seeing the principle depends on the stages; establishing the stages depends on wisdom; arousing wisdom depends on the gateways; and penetrating the gateways depends on contemplation. In reverse sequence: because there is contemplation, the gateways are penetrated; because the gateways are penetrated, wisdom is perfected; because wisdom is perfected, the stages are established; because the stages are established, the principle is seen; and because the principle is seen, it is called one principle. Beginning with the scripture's conclusion that the buddhas appear in the world for the one great matter is the concluding establishment of one principle.
The former provisional teachings can also be said, according to their meaning, to contain opening, showing, awakening, and entering. Yet these are not the Buddha's knowledge and vision, so they are called provisional. Now the Buddha's knowledge and vision is explicitly taught, so it is called real. The real is one principle.
XV. One Class of Persons, One Practice, and One Teaching
Beginning with the Buddha's telling Śāriputra that the buddhas and tathāgatas teach only bodhisattvas is the explanation of one class of persons. Viewed according to former provisional means, it appeared that the three vehicles were taught. According to the real, those taught are only bodhisattvas. The poor son thinks himself a lowly hired laborer, while the elder sees and knows that he is truly his own son. This is one class of persons.
Beginning with the statement that everything they do is always for one matter, what Guangzhai calls one teaching the present master calls one practice. The many practices of the three vehicles are called “all”; because all these practices exist for the sake of perfection, the many practices are the one matter. Where does this one practice go? It proceeds only toward the Buddha's knowledge and vision; this is one practice.
This sentence can also emphasize one teaching. From the perspective of the teaching lord, everything the buddhas do takes teaching and transforming as its work, so it is more convenient to call it one teaching. From the perspective of practitioners, what is done is practice, so it is more convenient to call it one practice. All four sentences in fact have two directions. In the sentence on one principle, taking that which knows and sees emphasizes one set of stages, while taking that which is known and seen emphasizes one principle. In the sentence on persons, taking the act of teaching and transforming emphasizes one teaching, while taking bodhisattvas emphasizes one class of persons. In the sentence on teaching, taking the teaching of the Dharma to living beings through the one buddha vehicle emphasizes one teaching, while taking “vehicle” in its meaning of bearing and transporting emphasizes one practice. Each of the four sentences can be interpreted in this way, following whichever direction is more convenient in its context.
Beginning with the words “only through the one buddha vehicle,” what Guangzhai calls one cause the present master calls one teaching. The perfectly sudden teaching is called the one buddha vehicle. Thus the Introductory chapter speaks of expounding a Great Vehicle scripture; this precisely indicates the meaning of teaching. The teachings below the Distinct Teaching remain residual statements carrying unexhausted provisional means; they are not the ultimate and definitive one buddha vehicle.
XVI. No Other, No Two, No Three, and the Conclusion to the Four-Buddha Chapter
Guangzhai says that “no two” means there are no two vehicles of pratyekabuddhas and śrāvakas, while “no three” means there is no third vehicle of partial-practice bodhisattvas. Another person says that “no two” means there are no bodhisattvas or pratyekabuddhas, while “no three” means there are no śrāvakas. If this were so, it would merely remove the vehicles of the Tripiṭaka Teaching while preserving the vehicle of the Shared Teaching and would have nothing to do with the one buddha vehicle.
Another says that “no two” means there are no pratyekabuddhas and “no three” means there are no śrāvakas, while still preserving the Great Vehicle of bodhisattvas. If this were so, only the two vehicles within the Tripiṭaka Teaching would be removed, while the Tripiṭaka bodhisattva would still remain. This would still leave a remainder and would have nothing to do with the buddha vehicle. Moreover, where does any scripture or treatise list the śrāvaka vehicle as third? Since no such sequence exists, this is a false claim. In this arrangement, “no two” removes only pratyekabuddhas, while “no three” then switches to removing bodhisattvas; the first vehicle of śrāvakas is instead never removed, making the sequence even more disordered.
The present master says that “only through the one buddha vehicle” means the vehicle of the Perfect Teaching that teaches the Buddha-Dharma in purity. “No other vehicle” means there is no residual statement of the Distinct Teaching carrying provisional means. “No two” means there is no duality carried within the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras. “No three” means there are no three vehicles set in opposition within the Vaipulya teachings. If even these twos and threes do not exist, how much less the three vehicles of the Tripiṭaka Teaching.
Beginning with “Śāriputra, the Dharma of all buddhas throughout the ten directions is also like this” is the fifth section, the conclusion. The chapters on the buddhas of the past, future, and present each explicitly teach one teaching and one practice; the general text that follows then teaches one class of persons and one principle, as the wording shows. The four ones can also be explained within each chapter, but they are not as clearly manifest as in the general passage.
Chapter Thirteen of the Sūtra of the Bodhisattva's Jeweled Necklace speaks of nine generations of buddhas: the three great categories of past, present, and future are each again divided into three times. Among the three generations of future buddhas, ancient buddhas who enter the future through compassion and manifest various bodies to liberate living beings are the past buddhas within the future. Those who will receive predictions in the future are the present buddhas within the future. Those who will in turn be predicted by future buddhas are the future buddhas within the future. The three generations of past buddhas can be inferred from this, and the rest is not elaborated separately. Among the three generations of present buddhas, the present buddha within the present is the teaching lord at this moment; the next bodhisattva in the position of succession is the future buddha within the present; and an ancient buddha who lowers a trace is the past buddha within the present.
XVII. The Chapters on the Buddhas of the Past, Future, and Present
The chapter on past buddhas should possess all six meanings, but the explicit text presents only two: first, opening provisional means; second, revealing the real. Of the remaining four, two point upward to the general-buddha chapter and two point downward to the Śākyamuni chapter. The scripture's statement that past buddhas used immeasurable and innumerable provisional means explains the opening of the provisional. Its statement that all the dharmas they taught were for the sake of the one buddha vehicle explains the revelation of the real.
According to the preceding passage, the one buddha vehicle is one teaching. Living beings hear the Dharma from the buddhas; because the passage speaks both of the Dharma heard and the living beings receiving it, it also includes one class of persons. In “all ultimately attained the wisdom of all modes,” the object known by the wisdom of all modes is one principle, while that which knows is one practice. Although the scriptural wording does not follow the sequence of principle, persons, practice, and teaching, all four ones are present.
The future-buddha chapter likewise explicitly presents the two meanings of opening provisional means and revealing the real. The other meanings point reciprocally upward and downward, so all six are present together. The rest can be understood by analogy with the past-buddha chapter.
The present-buddha chapter takes the buddhas of the present as the teaching lords of the present moment. First it indicates the intent for which the buddhas appear in the world. Just as the general-buddha chapter says that the buddhas appear in the world solely because of the causes and conditions of the one great matter, here too the buddhas appear solely to benefit living beings and bring them peace and joy. Next comes opening the provisional, then revealing the real; the four ones of principle, persons, practice, and teaching are likewise included.
I. When the Real Is About to Be Taught, Why Do Five Thousand First Leave the Assembly?
If the one vehicle is real, why does the Buddha first teach skillful means? More immediately, if the Buddha is about to reveal the reality of the one vehicle, why does he not teach it directly but instead allow five thousand people to leave?
The reason is that the real concerns not only the Dharma taught but whether listeners can still admit that they have not yet arrived. The problem of the five thousand has three levels: their external obstructions are heavy, inwardly they cling to the lesser and thereby obscure the great, and they take what they have not attained and realized to be attainment and realization. When opening the three to reveal the one was only taught in brief, its meaning remained hidden and subtle, so they did not yet slander it. If the matter were taught extensively to its end, it would strike directly against their attachments, and remaining would instead harm them. The Buddha's silent failure to stop them is therefore not abandonment; it prevents them from forming an even heavier rejection in the present.
The simile of branches and leaves should be understood from this point. Branches and leaves are not wholly lifeless, but they cannot replace the root or immediately be fashioned into useful implements. The five thousand had encountered skillful means, yet guarded a shallow stage within them as ultimate. They were not forever without a connection to the great Dharma; they simply could not bear it at that moment. What they had heard before could still become a condition for later deliverance. Their withdrawal therefore both prevents present harm and preserves future benefit.
This means that “leaving” and “remaining” in the Dharma assembly are no longer merely reward and punishment. The true criterion is which arrangement reduces harm and finally brings benefit to that person. If either leaving or remaining would produce slander, one could teach forcefully as Bodhisattva Root of Joy did. In the case of the five thousand before the Buddha, leaving is beneficial while remaining would be harmful, and the Tathāgata therefore sends them away. Compassion does not always take a single posture; it sees precisely how much can be borne now.
II. If the One Vehicle Exists, Are the Skillful Means of the Three Vehicles Not Superfluous?
If the Buddha's original intent lies only in the one vehicle, do the three vehicles established earlier contradict the later revelation of the real?
The root treatise does not answer by declaring the former teaching false. It distinguishes the entrance from the destination. Because living beings' faculties differ, there must first be roads they can travel; yet what the Buddha's mind intends has always been the real. Recipients see three roads from their own present positions, while the buddhas know that these roads have one destination. Skillful means are many because living beings are many; the real is not divided because its entrances multiply.
Opening skillful means therefore has three levels: opening, explaining, and concluding. First, the text states that the buddhas establish teachings according to what is appropriate for living beings. Next, it uses Śākyamuni's own skillful means to explain those of every buddha. Finally, it says that the Buddha's intent cannot be known through discriminative thought. This ending is simultaneously the beginning of revealing the real. From the side of skillful means, it concludes the explanation that the Buddha's intent is difficult to know; from the side of the real, it turns toward the nondiscriminative Dharma known only by buddhas. The two sections do not meet at a wall but at a pivot.
This pivot also explains the simile of first giving when one wishes to take. The Buddha does not first give a wrong answer and later withdraw it. He first gives living beings a road they can accept and practice, enabling them gradually to leave their existing attachments. When their faculties mature, he reveals where every road truly leads. When skillful means are grasped as an endpoint, they obscure the real; when truthfully opened and revealed, they become precisely the gateway into it.
III. Why Are the Six Meanings Not Neatly Repeated in Every Buddha Chapter?
Why do the six meanings—praising the Dharma, freedom from falsehood, opening skillful means, revealing the real, using the five turbidities to explain the provisional, and distinguishing the false to encourage the true—not appear as a complete repeated list in every one of the five buddha chapters?
The root treatise wants readers to see mutual continuation, not repetitive transcription. The general-buddha chapter directly presents praise of the Dharma, freedom from falsehood, opening skillful means, and revealing the real. The chapter on the buddhas of the three times explicitly presents opening and revealing, points upward to the first two meanings, and downward to the final two in the Śākyamuni chapter. Some wording is omitted, but no meaning is absent from the whole.
This is the real significance of proceeding from the brief to the extensive. “Extensive” does not mean only greater length. More sentences and passages constitute extensiveness in text; proceeding from buddhas in general to the five buddhas is extensiveness in persons; expanding opening the three to reveal the one into six meanings is extensiveness in doctrine. The three forms of extensiveness correspond without forcing the same template onto every chapter. Differences in their length and order show precisely that the Buddha can arrange teaching according to the movement of the text without losing its common purport.
Placing praise of the Dharma in the general-buddha chapter also establishes a sense of time. Its explicit teaching only after more than forty years does not mean that no guidance existed before. Listeners were not yet capable, the time had not arrived, and the five thousand had not left. Now that people are capable, the time has arrived, and the withdrawing assembly has departed, the Dharma appears like a rare auspicious blossom. Freedom from falsehood immediately answers another question: if past and present teachings seem contrary, why can the Buddha's words be trusted? The answer is that the coarseness of the former principle, words, practice, and persons is now opened and revealed as subtle within the one vehicle. The earlier teaching is thereby completed, not erased.
IV. Why Is the One Great Matter First Said to Be Neither Five, Three, Seven, Nor Nine, Yet Also Said to Encompass Them?
If “one” excludes five, three, seven, and nine while “great” encompasses five, three, seven, and nine, is this not contradictory?
It is not. What is excluded is the establishment of each differentiated road as a separate ultimate. What is encompassed is every function within those roads that can guide beings toward the true mark. “One” is not an additional item placed beside many other choices; it means that the ultimate true mark cannot be divided by any numerical set. “Great” shows that this one is not narrow. It can broadly receive all former differences so that they no longer isolate themselves from one another.
“Matter” brings the true mark back to the activity for which buddhas appear in the world. “Cause” is the capacity in living beings capable of moving a buddha; “condition” is a buddha responding in accord with that capacity. The one great matter is therefore not merely a unilateral declaration by the Buddha. Living beings must be capable of moving the Buddha for the Buddha to respond. Although he responds by manifesting manifold roads, what he intends to accomplish remains living beings' entry into the true mark. Opening the three thus does not depart from the one great matter. It is the concrete form that matter assumes when cause and condition meet.
Opening, revealing, awakening, and entering are likewise not four abstract terms. Opening means that coverings are broken and knowledge and vision first become manifest. Revealing means that the qualities inherent in the substance are disclosed. Awakening means that event and principle no longer constitute two destinations. Entering means becoming free and unobstructed within event and principle. From first disclosure to deep entry, the four words describe how living beings actually receive the original intent for which a buddha appears in the world.
V. Why Devote Such a Long Passage to the Alternative Explanations of Various Masters?
If the root treatise finally supplies its own correct explanation, why enumerate in sequence the views of earlier teachers, Guangzhai, the masters of the Treatise on the Grounds, and the many anonymous positions?
Opening, revealing, awakening, and entering are easily carried away by external frameworks. Some divide the four phrases between cause and effect; some correlate them with hearing, reflection, and cultivation; some with stages; some distribute them among different scriptures; and others explain them through the two truths, three truths, or different forms of wisdom. Each sees something resembling the passage, yet may lose the center of the present scripture: opening the Buddha's knowledge and vision for living beings.
The root treatise's refutations consistently return to three questions. First, all four scriptural phrases principally concern benefit received by living beings; two cannot suddenly be changed to describe the Buddha himself. Second, the gateway of cause is teaching at this point, so events in the gateway of effect that have not yet been gathered cannot be inserted prematurely. Third, the Buddha's knowledge and vision cannot be replaced merely by selecting some sequence of stages or names of wisdom. If a cited framework cannot establish both living beings and the Buddha's knowledge and vision, it does not accord with the scripture.
The multiplicity of alternative interpretations is therefore not a table of lineages to memorize. It trains a way of reading: similar terminology does not entail identical textual meaning, and copious citations do not by themselves reach the point of this scripture. The subject of the sentence, its temporal and doctrinal position, and the benefit it intends to accomplish must all be preserved. This also prepares the space for the present explanation that follows, allowing its four interpretations to unfold from within the scriptural phrases rather than becoming boxes imposed upon them.
VI. From Immeasurable Ones to Ten Kinds of One and Then Four Ones, Why Does the Explanation Become Ever Briefer?
If “one” can be explained immeasurably, why is it gathered into ten kinds of one and finally into the four ones of principle, persons, practice, and teaching?
Under revealing the real, the root treatise first says that immeasurable dharmas are all one, then uses the ten subtleties from the Profound Meaning to establish ten kinds of one, and finally provisionally follows the old explanation in forming four ones. The immeasurable ones show that a single color and fragrance can each reveal the middle path, extending “one” through all dharmas. The ten kinds of one follow the scriptural sequence to show how principle, wisdom, practice, stages, three Dharmas, response, retinues, spiritual powers, benefit, and teaching each return to one. The four ones then gather the entire passage as the principle entered, the persons who enter, the practice actually undertaken, and the teaching that points out the road.
Among the four ones, principle is not a sphere suspended in emptiness. The Buddha's knowledge and vision have an object known and seen; the object of knowledge and truth seen are precisely the principle of the true mark. Without the one principle, all teachings and practices would lose their common destination. Practice also does not refer only to a cause at the beginning. It encompasses the entire course from cause to effect, which is why the old name “one cause” is changed to “one practice.” The old names for persons and teaching remain, while their meanings are newly integrated within the one vehicle.
Each of the four scriptural phrases also has two directions. The statement that the Buddha teaches only bodhisattvas can be viewed as teaching through “teaches” and as persons through “bodhisattvas.” The statement that everything done is constantly for one matter can be viewed as teaching through what the teacher does and as practice through what practitioners do. The phrase “one buddha vehicle” can be viewed as teaching through teaching the Dharma and as practice through conveying beings. Such mutual inclusion keeps the four ones in motion and prevents four names from dividing them.
VII. Why Is the One Principle Further Explained through Stages, Wisdoms, Gateways, and Contemplating the Mind?
If the principle is one, why distinguish four stages, four wisdoms, four gateways, and contemplation of the mind?
The same true mark must simultaneously explain how it becomes manifest, how it is known, how it is accessed, and how it is contemplated. The four stages show the relative clarity with which knowledge and vision progress from first opening into deep entry. The four wisdoms show how the real nature of the path, its distinctions, quiescent extinction, and manifold modes of practice are known. The four gateways show that principle may be accessed through emptiness, existence, both together, or the negation of both. Contemplating the mind brings the gateway of access into this very mind.
Among the four stages, at the ten abodes ignorance is first broken and knowledge and vision open. At the ten practices, once delusive obstructions have been removed, the myriad virtues are revealed. At the ten dedications, event and principle interpenetrate and awakening occurs. At the ten grounds, one enters free and unobstructed within event and principle. Yet within a single perfect stage, opening already possesses revealing, awakening, and entering. It is not a matter of cutting one mind into four segments and then filling them one by one. The moon's body is round at the beginning and end, yet its light still waxes and wanes. Likewise, all four stages illuminate the true mark while degrees of manifestation can still be described.
The four wisdoms unfold from that which knows: path-wisdom sees real nature; wisdom of path varieties knows distinctions; all-wisdom knows the quiescent extinction of dharmas; and wisdom of all modes knows both quiescent extinction and the manifold modes of practice. The four gateways remind us that the Dharmas giving access can be four while the principle accessed remains one. Contemplating the mind goes further: emptiness, provisional existence, and the middle can be distinct without confusion and can also be three that are one and one that is three; finally one does not cling even to three, yet can illuminate all three together.
There is a two-way movement among these four perspectives. Looking backward from the result, principle is seen through stages, stages are established through wisdom, wisdom arises through gateways, and gateways give access through contemplation. Following the beginning of practice forward, contemplation opens gateways, gateways accomplish wisdom, wisdom establishes stages, and stages manifest principle. This is a road of reciprocal accomplishment, not four unrelated classifications.
VIII. How Does the Four-Buddha Chapter Become the Pivot of Opening the Provisional to Reveal the Real?
The passages on buddhas in general and on buddhas of the past, future, and present differ in length. How do they together complete the teaching of the one vehicle?
The general-buddha chapter first establishes the general rule: the wondrous Dharma is rare and the Buddha's words are not false; skillful means must be opened and the real revealed. The past-buddha chapter shows through completed acts of transformation that every teaching given through skillful means was for the sake of the one buddha vehicle. The future-buddha chapter shows that this road will continue. The present-buddha chapter brings it into the teaching and transformation of this very moment, benefiting living beings and bringing them peace. The three times differ, but the original intent for appearing in the world does not.
Each chapter on buddhas of the three times explicitly presents the one teaching and one practice; the general passage afterward further reveals the one class of persons and one principle. Viewed from the meanings implicit in each chapter, living beings who hear the Dharma are the one class of persons, the one buddha vehicle is the one teaching, proceeding toward wisdom of all modes is the one practice, and the object known by that wisdom is the one principle. Although the order differs, all four meanings remain complete. This again demonstrates the reading method of the passage: wording may be mutually abbreviated, but meaning is not thereby fragmented.
The nine generations of buddhas further unfold time. Within each of the three classes—past, present, and future—a further past, present, and future is distinguished. Whether ancient buddhas manifest traces, present teachers transform beings, or successors receive predictions, none establish another endpoint. All enable living beings to enter the real through skillful means.
The four-buddha chapter is therefore not a comparison among four individual buddhas. Through the general rule and the three times, it repeatedly establishes one thing: because living beings differ, buddhas establish many gateways, yet they do not allow any gateway to become a sealed final destination. Opening skillful means means opening the reality to which they originally pointed. Revealing the real means enabling all skillful means to complete their guidance. This turn is the pivot of the prose teaching in the Skillful Means chapter.
Through the Eye of the Wenjuji
Zhanran first draws the criterion for the five thousand's withdrawal more tightly: “Hearing the brief teaching, they do not slander; hearing the extensive, they certainly would. Hence it says, ‘leaving is beneficial’”〔T34n1719 0231c16〕. This is not a general claim that leaving an assembly is better. It judges leaving and remaining according to whether the brief or extensive teaching would generate slander. He further distinguishes Root of Joy's forceful teaching from the Tathāgata's sending away: “Out of loving-kindness, Root of Joy enabled distant benefit and gave them the seed of joy; out of compassion, the Tathāgata protected them from slander and removed their present suffering”〔0231c21〕. One attends to distant benefit; the other first removes present suffering. Neither posture can be universalized apart from capacities and conditions.
Concerning the mutual emergence of the six meanings, Zhanran says, “Nothing is more essential to the six sections than opening and revealing”〔0232a27〕. He further marks the two directions with “When establishing the provisional for the sake of the real, the intent lies in the real; when opening the provisional to reveal the real, the intent lies in the provisional”〔0232c15〕. When skillful means are established, the intent is the real. When skillful means are opened and revealed, what is opened is precisely the provisional. This keeps skillful means from being either discarded or fixedly preserved.
In the present explanation, Zhanran first confirms, “The explanation first treats the one principle, itself through four meanings”〔0236a22〕 and immediately reminds readers, “As can be seen from the interpretation of the text below, each of these four ones has two directions”〔0236a26〕. Stages, wisdoms, gateways, and contemplation are thus four perspectives illuminating the one principle; principle, persons, practice, and teaching can likewise include one another according to agent and object and should not be read as sealed compartments.
When the root treatise cites the Summary of the Great Vehicle in explaining awakening and entering, Zhanran specifically marks, “As for citing the Summary of the Great Vehicle in explaining both awakening and entering, it borrows the distinct to establish the perfect”〔0236c16〕. This is the later commentary's judgment concerning the use of the citation and cannot be projected backward as a premise explicitly stated by the root treatise. Yet it reminds the reader that employing one term does not entail wholesale acceptance of its original system; what matters is how the present passage integrates it.
Concerning the mutual inclusion of the six meanings across the five buddhas, Zhanran concludes in a single sentence: “Across the five buddhas, [the meanings] are mutually abbreviated and mutually retained, without omission”〔0232a23〕. Mutual abbreviation is not arbitrary omission. Mutual retention means that a meaning not directly listed in one chapter can be carried by an explicit statement in a preceding or following one. This constrains two readings: one cannot say that the six meanings lack two because the general-buddha chapter lists only four; nor, merely to complete a set of six, can one insert later wording backward as though it were already present in that chapter.
At the chapter on the buddhas of the three times, Zhanran further says, “Therefore, now that the provisional is opened, the provisional is precisely the real”〔0238b26〕. This does not abolish the distinction between provisional and real. It indicates that after opening and revealing, former skillful means are no longer grasped as isolated endpoints; their function of leading toward the one vehicle becomes fully manifest. If one speaks only of the real without understanding how it guides different beings, the real becomes a destination without a gateway. If one clings only to the provisional and refuses to open it, guidance hardens into a closed abode. The mirror returns both sides to a single course of teaching and transformation.
For the nine generations of buddhas, Zhanran explains three times multiplied by three with “In every case, viewed through earlier and later within that very generation, there are themselves three times”〔0238b07〕. This does not add nine unrelated kinds of buddha. It returns manifested traces, present teachers, and successors to the same original intent for appearing in the world.
At the conclusion concerning the buddhas of the three times, Zhanran says, “Each chapter on the buddhas of the three times clarifies teaching and practice”〔0238a20〕. The remaining four of the six meanings are such that “two point to buddhas in general and are precisely the first two meanings; two point to Śākyamuni and are precisely the last two meanings”〔0238b23〕. Thus the general-buddha, three-times-buddha, and later Śākyamuni chapters are not three parallel lists, but one complete teaching whose parts point backward and forward to one another. The four-buddha chapter occupies the pivot because it inherits praise of the Dharma and freedom from falsehood from buddhas in general, transmits opening and revealing through the three times, and leaves the five turbidities and distinguishing the false to be taught extensively in the chapter on the present teacher.

This unit begins with the general outline of the first-round Dharma-teaching, proceeds through assent to teach, reception of the intent, and the formal extensive teaching, and within that extensive teaching explains in detail the buddhas in general and the buddhas of the past, future, and present. The treatise first distinguishes the faculties capable of receiving the teaching through the departure of the five thousand. It then unfolds the general-buddha chapter through four meanings—praise of the Dharma, absence of falsehood, opening provisional means, and revealing the real—and finally carries the four ones of principle, persons, practice, and teaching through the chapters on the buddhas of the three times. The four buddhas are the buddhas in general together with the buddhas of the three times, not four individually named buddhas.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
The strict domain is T34n1718〔0048c13–0052b26〕, containing 6,580 characters in the reading stream and 5,340 Han characters. It begins with 「初周法說,文為五」 tr. “The text of the first-round Dharma-teaching has five [sections]”〔T34n1718 0048c13〕 and ends with the fascicle title 「妙法蓮華經文句卷第四上」 tr. “Words and Phrases of the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma, Fascicle Four, First Part”〔0052b26〕. The body of the next unit begins with 「第二、廣釋迦章」 tr. “Second, the extensive Śākyamuni chapter”〔0052c05〕, while formal attachment to the scripture begins only at 「我今亦如是」 tr. “I too am now like this”〔0052c07〕.
Within the first-round Dharma-teaching of the Skillful Means chapter in the main exposition of the Trace Gate, this passage can be divided into the following thirty-two sections in the treatise's sequence:
| No. | Domain | Content in the Root Treatise |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0048c13–0048c18 | Five sections of the first-round Dharma-teaching: Dharma-teaching, understanding, confirmation, prediction, and the fourfold assembly's rejoicing |
| 2 | 0048c18–0048c23 | Three prose sections: assent, reception of the intent, and formal teaching; assent further has responsive, admonitory, and distinguishing forms |
| 3 | 0048c23–0049a09 | Departure of the five thousand; the three faults of obstruction, attachment, and pride; branches and leaves and “it is well that they have withdrawn” |
| 4 | 0049a09–0049a16 | First question and answer: the deaf and mute in the Avataṃsaka, the poisonous drum, Root of Joy, and Superior Intent |
| 5 | 0049a16–0049a23 | Second question and answer: forming a connection, the Buddha Great Universal Wisdom Excellence, the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, and the Sūtra of Golden Light |
| 6 | 0049a23–0049a28 | Two chapters of the formal extensive teaching; extensiveness in wording, persons, and meaning |
| 7 | 0049a28–0049b06 | Six meanings: praising the Dharma, absence of falsehood, opening provisional means, revealing the real, using the five turbidities to explain the provisional, and distinguishing the false to encourage the genuine |
| 8 | 0049b06–0049b09 | Two parts of the four-buddha chapter; four meanings of the general-buddha chapter |
| 9 | 0049b09–0049b19 | Praising the rare Dharma: speaking only at the proper time, the udumbara blossom, the three flavors, and contemplating the mind |
| 10 | 0049b19–0049b24 | Absence of falsehood: principle, words, practice, and persons, formerly coarse and now wondrous |
| 11 | 0049b24–0049c03 | Three sections of opening provisional means; 「是法非思量」 tr. “This Dharma cannot be understood through thought” both concludes what precedes and opens what follows |
| 12 | 0049c03–0049c08 | Five sections of revealing the real; indicating the supreme persons and Dharma and indicating the intent for appearing in the world |
| 13 | 0049c08–0049c18 | General explanation of the one great matter and separate explanation of one, great, matter, cause, and condition |
| 14 | 0049c18–0049c21 | Raising the topic again; the example of the royal father repeatedly speaking the crown prince's name |
| 15 | 0049c21–0050c05 | The old interpretation, Guangzhai, the masters of the Treatise on the Grounds, and ten further interpretations introduced as 「有人」 tr. “someone” |

| 17 | 0050c22–0051a03 | General framework of the present master; ten kinds of one, immeasurable ones, and the four ones in brief |
| 18 | 0051a03–0051a16 | Establishing the ten kinds of one through scriptural sentences |
| 19 | 0051a16–0051a23 | Replacing one effect with one principle and one cause with one practice |

| 23 | 0051c10–0051c16 | Explanation through the four gateways of emptiness, existence, both emptiness and existence, and neither emptiness nor existence |
| 24 | 0051c16–0051c28 | Interpretation through contemplating the mind; forward and reverse arising of the fourfold interpretation |
| 25 | 0051c28–0052a03 | One class of persons |
| 26 | 0052a03–0052a15 | One practice, with a possible secondary emphasis on one teaching; two directions within each of the four sentences |
| 27 | 0052a15–0052b03 | One teaching; three schools' interpretations of 「無二、無三」 tr. “no two, no three” and the present explanation |
| 28 | 0052b03–0052b07 | Conclusion to the four-buddha chapter; the three-times chapters explain one teaching and one practice, followed by a general statement of one class of persons and one principle |
| 29 | 0052b07–0052b13 | Nine generations of buddhas |
| 30 | 0052b13–0052b20 | Past-buddha chapter: opening provisional means and revealing the real, together with all four ones |

The strict corresponding domain in the Fahua Wenjuji begins with 「許文為三」 tr. “The passage of assent has three [sections]”〔T34n1719 0230c29〕 and ends with 「故知是總」 tr. “therefore one knows this is the general [statement]”〔0238c10〕. The latter half of the same line, 「《經》「知諸眾生」」 tr. “The scripture: ‘knowing all living beings...’” has already entered the next unit. The mirror text contains no independent explanatory section for the root treatise's general five sections of the first round and three prose sections〔0048c13–0048c19〕.
II. Formation and Transmission
The head of this work attributes it to the teaching of the Great Master Zhizhe of Tiantai in the Sui; Shenjiong's preface records Guanding's private record and the ordering and establishment of the text in the wuxu year of the Tang Tianbao era. This passage accordingly preserves Zhiyi's doctrinal teaching as primary, while the layers of record, ordering, and later explanation each retain their distinct positions in transmission.

| Ten subtleties | Root treatise: 「如《玄義》中十妙,則是十種一也。」 tr. “As with the ten subtleties in the Profound Meaning, these are ten kinds of one” | T34n1718 0050c27 | 「中十妙者:一、境妙。二、智妙。三、行妙。四、位妙。五、三法妙。六、感應妙。七、神通妙。八、說法妙。九、眷屬妙。十、功德利益妙。」 tr. “The ten subtleties within [the Trace Gate] are: first, subtle objects; second, subtle wisdom; third, subtle practice; fourth, subtle stages; fifth, the subtle three dharmas; sixth, subtle stimulus-and-response; seventh, subtle spiritual powers; eighth, subtle teaching of the Dharma; ninth, subtle retinues; tenth, subtle meritorious benefit”〔T33n1716 0697c02〕 |
The Treatise on the Nature of the Dharma-Realm can only be marked as a locked transmitted citation; no false claim is made that the independent original treatise has been obtained.
16. Named Sources Whose Exact Present-Witness Wording Remains to Be Located
| Root-Treatise Item | Root-Treatise Loc | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Example in the Treatise of the royal father wishing repeatedly to hear the crown prince's name | 0049c19 | The mirror supplies a separate sentence, 「如王好施」 tr. “like the king Fond of Giving”; a continuous locus in the present witness remains to be located. |
| Someone cites the Avataṃsaka, the Jeweled Necklace, the Sūtra for Humane Kings, the Summary of the Great Vehicle, and the Treatise on the Seventeen Grounds as all containing fifty-two stages | 0050b11 | This is a list of books cited by another interpreter; their separate stage systems are not spliced into a single citation. |
| The Treatise says the general and specific aspects of the four wisdoms are attained simultaneously | 0050b16 | An exact locus in the present witness remains to be located. |
| 「今欲以圓教四智對於四位,不如《般若》中通教釋也」 tr. “Here the four wisdoms of the Perfect Teaching will be correlated with the four stages, rather than following the Shared Teaching explanation in the Prajñāpāramitā” | 0051c01 | This is a reference made by the root treatise; it does not contain a separate verbatim citation from the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras. |
IV. Essential Explanations from the Wenjuji [the Mirror]
The Fahua Wenjuji is Zhanran's later explanatory mirror layer and is not reattributed as Zhiyi's own teaching. Its principal judgments within the strict domain are as follows:
| Root-Treatise Topic | Exact Essential Sentence from the Wenjuji | Function of the Mirror Layer |
|---|---|---|
| Three kinds of assent | 「「許文為三」,三文各二,則以三文各二字是。」 tr. “‘The passage of assent has three’: each of the three passages has two [parts], indicated by two characters for each”〔T34n1719 0230c29〕 | Each assent is further divided into a preceding element and the assent itself |
| Four wholesome dharmas | 「一者親近善友,二者聽聞正法,三者思惟其義,四者如說修行」 tr. “First, drawing near to wholesome friends; second, hearing the true Dharma; third, reflecting upon its meaning; fourth, practicing in accord with the teaching”〔0231a04〕 | Supplies the complete enumeration of the four dharmas left unexpanded in the root treatise |
| Departure of the five thousand | 「或當過去有謗法緣,或機未熟聞必生謗」 tr. “Perhaps in the past they formed conditions for slandering the Dharma, or perhaps their faculties were immature and hearing it would necessarily produce slander”〔0231a08〕 | Gives the two possibilities of past slander conditions and present immaturity |
| Three stoppages | 「三請已後五千必去,秖一三止用當二義,於理無妨」 tr. “After the three requests, the five thousand must leave. The same three stoppages serve both meanings, without doctrinal conflict”〔0231a25〕 | The three stoppages both wait for the faculties and respond to the five thousand still being seated |
| Poisonous drum | 「鼓者,平等法身。毒者,無緣慈悲。打者,發起眾也。聞者,當機眾也。死者,無明破也。」 tr. “The drum is the equal Dharma-body. The poison is unconditional compassion. Beating is the assembly that initiates the teaching. Hearing is the assembly whose faculties fit the occasion. Dying is the breaking of ignorance”〔0231b08〕 | The fivefold correlation belongs only to the mirror layer |
| Leaving and remaining | 「聞略不謗聞廣必謗,故云「去則有益」。」 tr. “Hearing the brief teaching they do not slander; hearing the extensive teaching they certainly would. Thus it says, ‘leaving benefits them’”〔0231c16〕 | Limits the judgment to this occasion, on which they should not be forced to remain |
| Root of Joy and the Tathāgata | 「喜根慈故令遠得益與其樂種,如來悲故護令不謗拔其當苦。」 tr. “Out of loving-kindness, Root of Joy causes distant benefit and gives the seed of joy; out of compassion, the Tathāgata protects them from slander and removes their present suffering”〔0231c21〕 | Carefully distinguishes the two kinds of faculty treated through forceful teaching and dismissal |
| Number in the Great Sūtra | 「疏文欠八字」 tr. “The commentary's text lacks the character ‘eight’”〔0232a11〕 | Explicitly identifies that the root treatise's 「萬五千億」 tr. “fifteen thousand koṭis” lacks 「八」 tr. “eight” |
| Five buddhas and six meanings | 「五佛互略互存無闕。」 tr. “The five buddha chapters reciprocally abbreviate and preserve [the meanings], without omission”〔0232a23〕 | Explains why the meanings appear reciprocally without being absent |
| Four meanings of the buddhas in general | 「四正二旁,當知五六成就三四,是故略指。」 tr. “Four are primary and two collateral; know that the fifth and sixth complete the third and fourth, and therefore are only indicated briefly”〔0232b01〕 | Explains reciprocal reference between the four and six meanings |
| More than forty years | 「佛成道後四十二年說《法華經》」 tr. “The Buddha taught the Lotus Sūtra forty-two years after attaining the path”〔0232b07〕 | The number transmitted from the Treatise on the Nature of the Dharma-Realm |
| Opening the Provisional to Reveal the Real | 「為實施權意在於實,開權顯實意在於權」 tr. “When establishing the provisional for the sake of the real, the intent lies in the real; when opening the provisional to reveal the real, the intent lies in the provisional”〔0232c15〕 | Explains the respective emphasis of establishment and opening/revelation |
| Not five, three, seven, or nine | 「三藏三乘加人天五也,加通教二乘七也。」 tr. “The three vehicles of the Tripiṭaka Teaching plus humans and gods make five; adding the two vehicles of the Shared Teaching makes seven”〔0233a06〕 | Supplies the calculations of five and seven; two kinds of bodhisattva further make nine |
| Guangzhai | 「初作因果相違破三慧在因故也。」 tr. “The first refutation establishes a contradiction between cause and effect because the three wisdoms belong to the causal stage”〔0233b08〕 | Identifies the method of refutation in the body |
| School of the fifty-two stages | 「破有二失:一者謬用《華嚴》十信,二者賢位非佛知見。」 tr. “The refutation identifies two faults: first, the mistaken use of the Avataṃsaka's ten faiths; second, the worthy stages are not the Buddha's knowledge and vision”〔0234b04〕 | Separates the two faults |
| Treatise on the Lotus Sutra | 「《論》有三文」 tr. “The treatise has three passages”〔0234c21〕 | The three rounds concerning the three vehicles, bodhisattvas, and ordinary beings |
| Extensive, middle, and brief in the present explanation | 「今古相對即略中廣。」 tr. “When the present and old [interpretations] are set in relation, there are the brief, middle, and extensive”〔0235c11〕 | The extensive is immeasurable ones, the middle the ten subtleties, and the brief the four ones |
| Four explanations of one principle | 「先釋理一自為四義」 tr. “The initial explanation of one principle itself has four meanings”〔0236a22〕 | The four perspectives of stages, wisdoms, gateways, and contemplation |
| Mutual inclusion of the four ones | 「此四一準下消文皆有兩向」 tr. “Following the explanations below, each of these four ones has two directions”〔0236a26〕 | Mutual inclusion of knower and known, teaching and persons, teaching and practice |
| Opening among the four stages | 「局於初住方名開也。」 tr. “Only when limited to the first abode is it called opening”〔0236b15〕 | Limits opening within the stage explanation |
| Method of citing the Summary of the Great Vehicle | 「於釋悟入並引《攝大乘》者,借別成圓」 tr. “In explaining awakening and entering, the Summary of the Great Vehicle is cited in both cases: the Distinct is borrowed to establish the Perfect”〔0236c16〕 | This judgment belongs only to the mirror layer |
| Horizontality of the four gateways | 「初心所稟教法具四,以法相望無復優劣,故名為橫。」 tr. “The teaching received by the beginner possesses all four; viewed in relation as dharmas, they no longer have superiority or inferiority, and are therefore called horizontal”〔0237a23〕 | Explains the horizontal arrangement of the four gateways |
| Buddha's knowledge and vision | 「開示等名,名可通用,佛之一字唯局此經。」 tr. “Names such as opening and showing can be used generally, but the single word ‘Buddha’ is restricted to this scripture”〔0237b28〕 | Concludes the distinction between the provisional and the real |
| Three schools | 「次破三師。」 tr. “Next, three masters are refuted”〔0237c20〕 | Confirms three interpretations of 「無二、無三」 tr. “no two, no three” |
| Four ones in the three times | 「三世佛章各明教行」 tr. “Each chapter on the buddhas of the three times explains teaching and practice”; 「眾生即人一,種智所知即理一」 tr. “Living beings are one class of persons; what the wisdom of all modes knows is one principle”〔0238a20, 0238a25〕 | Explicitly gives teaching and practice, together with persons and principle |
| Nine generations | 「皆悉當世前後相望,自有三世」 tr. “In each age, viewed in relation to what precedes and follows, there are inherently three times”〔0238b07〕 | Divides each time into three by what precedes and follows within it |
| Reciprocal reference of the six meanings | 「兩指總佛即初二意,兩指釋迦即後二意。」 tr. “Two point to the buddhas in general, namely the first two meanings; two point to Śākyamuni, namely the latter two meanings”〔0238b23〕 | The four abbreviated items in the three-times chapters point upward and downward |
| Conclusion of this passage | 「以經文初自云舍利弗是諸佛等,故知是總。」 tr. “Because the scriptural text first says on its own, ‘Śāriputra, these buddhas,’ and so forth, one knows that this is the general [statement]”〔0238c09〕 | Explains that the final sentence is the general text following the three times |
The mirror domain also contains the fascicle titles 「法華文句記卷第四〔下〕」 tr. “Notes on the Words and Phrases of the Lotus, Fascicle Four [Second Part]”〔0234c15〕 and 「法華文句記卷第五〔上〕」 tr. “Notes on the Words and Phrases of the Lotus, Fascicle Five [First Part]”〔0234c18〕. The two square-bracketed annotations belong to the transmission layer and are not incorporated into the title text.
V. Explanations of Various Masters
The root treatise does not lack alternative interpretations. It first presents them, refutes each in turn, and then gives the Treatise on the Lotus Sutra and the present interpretation. The schools are as follows:
| No. | Root-Treatise Marker | Position | Judgment in the Root Treatise |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Old interpretation | One effect, one class of persons, one teaching, and one cause; opening and showing belong to the speaker, awakening and entering to recipients; the Cause and Effect Gates are also distinguished | All four sentences concern benefit attained by living beings, and the passage is still within the Cause Gate; 「今不用此解」 tr. “The present [treatise] does not use this explanation”〔T34n1718 0049c27〕 |
| 2 | Guangzhai | Opening by removal and opening by production; showing, awakening, and entering correspond to hearing, reflection, and cultivation | The topic is defined as one effect, yet the text is resolved through three wisdoms belonging to the causal stage; 「今亦不用」 tr. “The present [treatise] likewise does not use it”〔0050a12〕 |
| 3 | Masters of the Treatise on the Grounds | The eightfold understanding at the fifth Ganges corresponds to opening; first through sixth grounds to showing; seventh through eighth grounds to awakening; tenth ground to entering | Understanding before entry into the grounds is not the buddha-eye or wisdom of all modes; 「今亦不用」 tr. “The present [treatise] likewise does not use it”〔0050a24〕 |
| 4 | Someone | The first sentence is principle and the latter three its brief explanation; removal of the five turbidities reveals the principle, and the latter three correspond to hearing, reflection, and cultivation | 「難此同前」 tr. “The objection to this is the same as before”〔0050b03〕 |
| 5 | Someone | The separate teachings of the three vehicles are opening, their shared teaching is showing, disparagement and praise are awakening, and the Lotus is entering | Judged to be fragmented and forced |
| 6 | Another | What is shared among the three vehicles is opening, disparagement and praise are showing, the Sūtra of Immeasurable Meanings is awakening, and the Lotus is entering | Judged to be fragmented and forced |
| 7 | Someone | The thirty minds are opening, the first through sixth grounds showing, the seventh through ninth grounds awakening, and the tenth ground entering | Judged to take a peripheral Shared meaning and insert a Distinct meaning |
| 8 | Someone | Cites the Avataṃsaka, Jeweled Necklace, Sūtra for Humane Kings, Summary of the Great Vehicle, and Treatise on the Seventeen Grounds for fifty-two stages | The cited texts and the claim that pre-ground stages sever delusion are judged not to correspond |
| 9 | Someone | Cites the Treatise to say that the general and specific aspects of the four wisdoms are attained simultaneously | The four wisdoms are lofty, while opening and showing also extend through shallow and deep levels; the two cannot be compared |
| 10 | Someone | Neither emptiness nor existence is opening, the capacity for emptiness and existence is showing, the nonduality of emptiness and existence is awakening, and the twofold character of the nondual is entering | Still does not go beyond the two truths |
| 11 | Someone | Penetrating the principle of the three truths is opening, distinguishing the three truths clearly is showing, not seeing one or difference is awakening, and naturally following their flow is entering | Still a sequential bodhisattva Dharma |
| 12 | Someone | The general aspect known by all-wisdom is knowledge, and the specific aspect known by the wisdom of all modes is vision | The root treatise refutes this through the threefold distinction of śrāvaka wisdom, bodhisattva wisdom, and buddha-wisdom |
| 13 | Someone | Exhaustion-wisdom's severing of delusion and purity is knowledge; nonarising-wisdom's nonarising of afflictive burdens is vision | Judged to take the name and doctrine of the buddha in the Shared school to explain the ultimate buddha |
| 14 | Treatise on the Lotus Sutra | Four meanings of unsurpassed, sameness, not knowing, and realizing the ground of nonretrogression; then one round each concerning bodhisattvas and ordinary beings | The present master relies on the treatise while providing four further explanations |
| 15 | Present master | Gives a fourfold interpretation within every sentence; further explains one principle through the four stages, four wisdoms, four gateways, and contemplation of the mind | The position established by the body of the present work |
The three interpretations of 「無二、無三」 tr. “no two, no three” are separately recorded:
| No. | Root-Treatise Marker | Position | Judgment in the Root Treatise |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Guangzhai | No two vehicles of pratyekabuddhas and śrāvakas; no third vehicle of partial-practice bodhisattvas | Not adopted by the present explanation |
| 2 | Another person | No bodhisattvas or pratyekabuddhas means no two; no śrāvakas means no three | Removes only the vehicles of the Tripiṭaka Teaching while preserving the Shared vehicle |
| 3 | Someone | No pratyekabuddhas means no two; no śrāvakas means no three; preserves the Great Vehicle of bodhisattvas | Still leaves a remainder, and its sequence of vehicles is disordered |
The mirror further adds, 「第三師同於嘉祥」 tr. “The third master agrees with Jiaxiang”〔T34n1719 0237c27〕. This is Zhanran's later attribution and is not written backward into the root treatise as an original attribution.
VI. Terminology
| Term | Meaning Restricted to This Passage |
|---|---|
| First-round Dharma-teaching | The first of the three rounds of teaching; this passage first gathers the later text under five sections: Dharma-teaching, understanding, confirmation, prediction, and rejoicing |
| Distinguishing assent / distinguishing the assembly | The third form of assent to teach; the departure of the five thousand is its scene, not the selection of the five thousand |
| Obstruction, attachment, and pride | The three faults of the five thousand: many obstructions from the five turbidities, attachment to the Lesser concealing the Great, and supposing attainment without attainment |
| Persons forming a connection | Not the present audience whose faculties fit the occasion, but people who, through hearing the Dharma, form conditions for liberation later |
| Four-buddha chapter | The buddhas in general and the buddhas of the past, future, and present |
| Five buddhas | The five chapters on the buddhas in general, past buddhas, future buddhas, present buddhas, and Śākyamuni Buddha |
| Six meanings | Praising the Dharma, absence of falsehood, opening provisional means, revealing the real, using the five turbidities to explain the provisional, and distinguishing the false to encourage the genuine |
| Causes and conditions of the one great matter | The root treatise gives both a general explanation and a separate explanation of the words one, great, matter, cause, and condition |
| Ten kinds of one | Following the ten subtleties: one object, wisdom, practice, stage, three dharmas, stimulus-and-response, retinue, spiritual power, benefit, and teaching of the Dharma |
| Four ones | In the present explanation: one principle, one class of persons, one practice, and one teaching; the number is the same as in the old school, but the meanings differ |
| Four stages | The ten abodes, ten practices, ten dedications, and ten grounds, used to explain opening, showing, awakening, and entering separately |
| Four wisdoms | Path-wisdom, wisdom of path varieties, all-wisdom, and the wisdom of all modes |
| Four gateways | Emptiness, existence, both emptiness and existence, and neither emptiness nor existence; the gateways that penetrate are four, while the principle penetrated is one |
| Three contemplations in one mind | The contemplative-mind explanation of opening, showing, awakening, and entering, in which emptiness, provisional existence, and the middle mutually include and illuminate one another |
| Nine generations of buddhas | The three great categories of past, present, and future are each divided again into past, present, and future, producing nine as three times three |
VII. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
The passage concerning the departure of the five thousand uses three groups of similes—branches and leaves, useful vessels, and the poisonous drum—to distinguish faculties. Branches and leaves represent peripheral fragments unfit for use; they do not assert that the five thousand will never possess wholesome roots. The poisonous drum represents the possibility that even those unable to receive the teaching now may form conditions for breaking delusion later. Root of Joy's forceful teaching and the Tathāgata's dismissal both benefit living beings, but use different means because leaving and remaining have different benefits and harms.
The udumbara blossom's appearance once in three thousand years uses rarity to represent the revelation of the real only after more than forty years. Reaching ghee only after the three flavors of curds, raw butter, and clarified butter uses sequential maturation to reveal 「時乃說之」 tr. “speaking only at the proper time.” The moon's body is round both at first and last while its brightness differs between the new and full moon; this preserves both the one true aspect seen in the four stages and the difference in the brightness and obscurity of knowledge and vision.
The simile of “giving first when one wishes to acquire” in the explanation of the one great matter means that opening the three and revealing the one are not two mutually negating teachings. Distinct paths are first established to guide people, and their destination is finally revealed. The four gateways are the same: emptiness, existence, both emptiness and existence, and neither emptiness nor existence are four distinct gateways capable of penetration, while the principle penetrated is one.
This passage is carried forward into the four-buddha chapter in verse. The prose first explains generally praise of the Dharma, absence of falsehood, opening provisional means, and revealing the real. Each of the three-times buddha chapters then explains opening and revelation while pointing upward and downward for the other four meanings. The Śākyamuni chapter further gives the extensive explanation of using the five turbidities to establish the provisional and distinguishing the false to encourage the genuine. The four explanations are therefore a framework for reading the text, not a grid that divides every passage into four cells.

There is also a later textual note outside an <app> node. The wording attached to the punctuation anchor at 0052b25 is 「不分卷【甲】」 tr. “not divided into fascicles [Jia].” It has no independent Taishō line number; 0052b25 is only the real location of its anchor and is not treated as a body-text variant.
2. Inline Annotations
The strict T34n1718 domain contains ten inline annotations reading 〔云云〕: 0049b06, 0049b18, 0049b19, 0049c21, 0050a20, 0050a29, 0050c26, 0051b29, 0052b11, and 0052b21. They are transmitted annotations, not blank spaces that license arbitrary supplementation.
The mirror domain additionally contains 〔云云〕〔T34n1719 0232a29〕, 〔一一句如初句〕 tr. “[Each sentence is like the first sentence]”〔0233b24〕, and the fascicle-title annotations 〔下〕 tr. “[Second Part]”〔0234c15〕 and 〔上〕 tr. “[First Part]”〔0234c18〕.
3. Gaiji and Page Anchors
No <g> gaiji occur in either T34n1718〔0048c13–0052b26〕 or the corresponding domain of T34n1719. The 「○」 tr. “circle” in the body is the representation of an outline marker in the reading stream and is not counted as a gaiji.
Every location above is taken from the nearest preceding <lb> before the first character of the cited wording. If the first half of a line belongs to a preceding passage and the latter half to this passage, the boundary is still determined by exact characters; the whole line is not moved into the unit. The start of every domain anchor follows the same real position of its first character.
