Ānanda and Rāhula had not been left without predictions. They were already included in the collective prediction for the twelve hundred. What they seek here is a clear individual prediction for each of them.
It is like hearing, together with a whole company, that the road ahead has opened, yet still feeling a simple wish arise: does this road truly see me too? A shared promise gives direction; individual confirmation brings that direction into one person’s vows and practice.
Yet this chapter does not make everyone speak in the same way. Ānanda and Rāhula first think silently and then make their request aloud. One is the Buddha’s son and the other guards His Dharma treasury; the assembly too expects them to receive predictions. Their words therefore carry both their own aspirations and the hopes of the assembly.
The two thousand do not add another speech of request. They simply rise, join their palms, gaze up at the World-Honored One, and stand to one side. Silence does not mean the absence of aspiration. Sometimes one has already placed one’s whole heart in the direction one seeks and need add no further words on one’s own behalf.
Among them are people in training and people beyond training. Their stages differ, yet they are of one stream, receive predictions at the same time, and receive the same name. Sharing does not require everyone’s course to have been identical. Some are still investigating the true and cutting off delusion; others have exhausted the true and brought delusion to an end. The Buddha’s prediction does not erase their differences. It lets people in different positions face buddhahood together.
Ānanda’s prediction is especially apt to provoke doubt. As things appear now, the Buddha has attained buddhahood while Ānanda still serves as His attendant. Yet the Buddha says that long ago, in the presence of Empty-King Buddha, they aroused the great resolve together. The Buddha advanced first through vigor and attained buddhahood; Ānanda, through extensive learning, guarded the Dharma treasuries of the buddhas. Their pace and their responsibilities differed, but their shared resolve was not thereby lost.
An individual prediction, then, does not draw a person out of the community. Within a shared movement, it illuminates how each particular vow and practice comes to maturity. The collective prediction says: you are on this road. The individual prediction says: this path you have practiced has not been forgotten.
The next time someone else advances more quickly and you begin to doubt whether your extensive learning, guardianship, or silence counts, remember this chapter’s order: first confirm that all belong to one stream, then look at each person’s vows and practice; first refuse to flatten the differences, then let those differences lead together toward the buddha-way.

I. What Are Training and Beyond Training?
Investigating the true and cutting off delusion is called training; when the true has been exhausted and delusion has come to an end, this is called beyond training.
Cultivating the true and aspiring to superior vision is called training. The stage of training lies in the genuine uncontaminated wisdom of the three fruits and four approaches. At the fruit of arhatship, investigation into principle has been exhausted and superior vision has reached its limit. Because there is nothing further to learn at that stage, it is called beyond training.
The chapter title is further explained through the different teachings.
Analyzing dharmas and investigating the true is called training; when delusion and the true have both been exhausted, this is called beyond training. This is the meaning of the Tripiṭaka teaching.
Embodying dharmas and investigating the true is called training; when there is neither true nor delusion, this is called beyond training. This is the meaning of the Shared teaching.
Proceeding step by step from the shallow to the deep is called training; when shared and distinct delusions have been exhausted and provisional and real principles have been fully fathomed, this is called beyond training. This is the meaning of the Distinct teaching.
When investigating the tathāgata-garbha, one may speak of training and beyond training. At the level of Dharma-nature and true mark, it is neither training nor beyond training, yet it can also be said to be both training and beyond training. 〔And so forth〕
II. Why Do the Two Thousand Form a Separate Chapter?
Among these two thousand, some are people in training and some are people beyond training. Yet they belong to one stream, receive predictions at the same time, and receive one and the same buddha-name. A separate chapter is therefore established.
This chapter is the second section in the larger prediction text. Its scripture passage divides into two parts: first, the request for predictions; second, the bestowal of predictions.
III. The Request First Divides into the Two People and the Two Thousand
The request for predictions again divides into two parts: first, the request of Ānanda and Rāhula; second, the request of the two thousand.
The request of the two people again divides into two parts: first, silent thought; second, a spoken request for predictions. The spoken request again has two items: first, citing the preceding predictions as an example and indicating that they too should have a share; second, invoking the assembly’s expectation of them.
Ānanda and Rāhula are the two closest to the Buddha and are also those whom the assembly at that time expects to receive predictions. Rāhula is the Buddha’s son, intimate and weighty in worldly kinship; Ānanda guards the Buddha’s Dharma treasury, intimate and foremost in the Way. If these two—one intimate and weighty, the other intimate and foremost—did not receive separate predictions, the assembly’s expectation could not be fulfilled.
IV. If They Are Intimate, Weighty, and Foremost, Why Are They Listed Here?
Someone asks:
Since one is intimate and weighty and the other intimate and foremost, they should be listed with the preceding stream. Why are they placed here? Again, according to the assembly listed in the Introduction chapter, these two were among those numbered above. Why, when predictions are now bestowed, are they placed below?
The answer:
When the collective prediction was previously given to the twelve hundred, these two had already received it with the preceding stream. What they now seek is only an individual prediction for each of them. Ānanda is a person in training, and Rāhula holds the rank of disciple; they are therefore included in this section on those in training and beyond training.
When the two thousand request predictions, there are only silent thought and the cited precedent. These two intentions are the same as those of Ānanda and Rāhula, so the scripture merely says that their aspiration was like that of Ānanda and the others. The two thousand make no separate spoken request because they do not possess the two men’s circumstances of being intimate and weighty or intimate and foremost.
V. Predictions Are Bestowed First on the Two People and Then on the Two Thousand
The bestowal of predictions again divides into two parts: first, predictions are given to the two people; second, predictions are given to the two thousand.
Ānanda’s prediction again divides into five parts, in the following order:
First, the prediction in prose.
Second, its restatement in verse.
Third, doubt arises in the minds of eight thousand bodhisattvas in the assembly.
Fourth, the Tathāgata reveals past Traces and explains the doubt.
Fifth, Ānanda discloses his own Origin and expresses praise in verse.
VI. What Do the Eight Thousand Bodhisattvas Doubt?
The eight thousand bodhisattvas share one doubt: these śrāvakas seem only to have aroused the resolve today, yet they immediately receive predictions from the Buddha, and their future buddha-lands are extraordinarily pure. In the earlier Vaipulya teachings, bodhisattvas had to practice for immeasurable aeons before receiving predictions of buddhahood. Why is there such a difference here?
The Buddha therefore reveals past Traces and resolves the doubt. Long ago, Ānanda and the Buddha aroused the great resolve for awakening at the same time and were fellow students. Through vigor, the Buddha advanced first and attained buddhahood; through extensive learning, Ānanda still guards the scripture. Outwardly Ānanda manifests as the Buddha’s attendant, but such was his original ground. What is there to doubt in his now receiving this wondrous prediction?
The remaining predictions for Rāhula and the two thousand are all as stated in the scripture.
Ānanda and Rāhula were already included in the collective prediction for the twelve hundred, yet this chapter has them request predictions again. Among the two thousand are people in training and people beyond training: their stages are not the same, yet they receive predictions at the same time and receive one shared name. These arrangements make the chapter’s question more than simply who receives a prediction. It asks how collective and individual, sameness and difference, can stand together.
The root treatise begins with the meanings of “in training” and “beyond training,” then turns to requesting and bestowing predictions. This order matters. If one looks only at the buddha-name finally received, it is easy to erase the preceding differences in cultivation. If one looks only at present stages, one fails to see that those in training and beyond training can belong to one stream and move together toward a buddha’s prediction.
I. Beyond Training Does Not Mean Ceasing All Learning
Training is named for investigating the true and cutting off delusion; beyond training is named for exhausting the true and bringing delusion to an end. The root treatise further explains training as cultivating the true and aspiring to superior vision, and beyond training as having exhausted investigation into principle and brought superior vision to its limit. “Nothing further to learn” is therefore not a general refusal of knowledge, hearing Dharma, or practice. It means that at the fruit of arhatship, the truth to be investigated at this stage has been exhausted and the delusions to be cut off have come to an end.
This also explains why the chapter title first speaks of stages and then of predictions. A prediction does not wipe away everyone’s previous course of cultivation. It openly acknowledges that some remain at a stage of training and others have reached the stage beyond training. The root treatise preserves the distinction while also saying that the two thousand belong to one stream.
The root treatise next discusses training and beyond training through analyzing dharmas, embodying dharmas, proceeding from shallow to deep, and investigating the tathāgata-garbha. In the Tripiṭaka teaching, analyzing dharmas and investigating the true is training, while exhausting delusion and the true is beyond training. In the Shared teaching, embodying dharmas and investigating the true is training, while having neither true nor delusion is beyond training. In the Distinct teaching, proceeding from shallow to deep is training, while exhausting shared and distinct delusions and fathoming provisional and real principles is beyond training. In the Perfect teaching, one investigates the tathāgata-garbha and speaks of training and beyond training. At the level of Dharma-nature and true mark, neither term alone can delimit it; it is therefore said to be neither training nor beyond training, yet both training and beyond training. The title contains only two terms, but the root treatise preserves both the distinction of stages and this mutually opposing and completing formulation.
II. If Their Stages Differ, Why Are They Still Called One Stream?
Among the two thousand, some are in training and some are beyond training. The root treatise does not split them into two chapters because their stages differ. Instead it states three shared features in succession: they belong to one stream, receive predictions at one time, and receive one name.
Belonging to one stream does not mean that every person occupies exactly the same place in realization. If complete identity were required, training and beyond training could not be set side by side. The root treatise expressly lists three common features—one stream, prediction at one time, and one name—while preserving the difference between the two stages. It establishes a separate chapter precisely because of the three common features; it does not delete the two stages.
The scripture unfolds this commonality as each person attaining buddhahood in one of the ten directions, all sitting at the place of awakening at the same time, and all bearing the name Jewel-Mark. Their being in different lands of the ten directions shows that buddhahood is not attained in one place. Their shared time and name show that the two thousand share one prediction. Dispersion and commonality coexist, and this is precisely why the root treatise says they form a separate chapter.
III. Why Do the Two Speak While the Two Thousand Only Think Silently?
The request for predictions first divides into the two people and the two thousand. The request of the two again divides into silent thought and spoken request; the spoken request further divides into citing a precedent and invoking the assembly’s expectation. Ānanda and Rāhula do not merely hope inwardly for predictions. They voice two reasons: śrāvakas before them have already received predictions, so they too should have a share; and their relationship to the Buddha is a matter of common attention, so without individual predictions the assembly’s expectation would remain unfulfilled.
Rāhula is the Buddha’s son and therefore intimate and weighty in worldly kinship. Ānanda guards the Buddha’s Dharma treasury and therefore is intimate and foremost in the Way. These two descriptions explain why their spoken request engages the assembly’s expectation. The two do not speak only for themselves; they also speak for an expectation within the assembly that has not yet been satisfied.
The two thousand, by contrast, have only silent thought and the cited precedent. They do not make another spoken request or invoke the assembly’s expectation. The root treatise lists only two items for this branch, not four parallel to the request of the two. In the scripture they rise from their seats, bare their right shoulders, join their palms single-mindedly, gaze up at the World-Honored One, and stand to one side. This wordless posture is itself a request. Silence here is not absence of aspiration; their aspiration has already been disclosed by the precedent and by the request of the two.
IV. If They Are Intimate, Weighty, and Foremost, Why Are They Placed Below?
The root treatise poses the sharpest question itself. Since Ānanda and Rāhula are respectively weighty and foremost, they should belong to the preceding higher stream. In the order of the assembly, the two were included among those listed above; why are they placed here when predictions are bestowed?
The answer first distinguishes collective from individual prediction. When the twelve hundred received predictions earlier, these two received the collective prediction with them and were not omitted. What they request again in this chapter is a clear individual prediction for each. The scriptural sequence first places them within the group’s collective prediction and then gives them individual predictions here.
The root treatise adds an explanation in terms of the present chapter title: Ānanda is a person in training, and Rāhula holds the rank of disciple, so they are included in this section on those in training and beyond training. The answer does not assign Rāhula another fruit or approach, nor does it move the two back into the preceding chapter. It explains only why they can be seen again beneath this chapter’s stage-based title.
V. Why Is Ānanda’s Prediction Explained in Detail before “All Is as Stated in the Text”?
The predictions first divide into those for the two people and for the two thousand. Ānanda’s prediction then opens into five items: prose, verse, the doubt of eight thousand bodhisattvas, the Tathāgata’s revelation of the Trace to explain the doubt, and Ānanda’s disclosure of his Origin and expression of praise. The five follow the scripture’s narrative order: future buddhahood is declared, then restated in verse; doubt arises in the assembly, the Buddha resolves it, and Ānanda finally recollects his original vow and offers praise.
For the predictions of Rāhula and the two thousand, the root treatise gives no further sectional explanation and closes only with “The remaining predictions are all as stated in the text.” The scripture nevertheless gives in full Rāhula’s buddha-name, his connection as eldest son, and his hidden practice, as well as the shared time and name of the two thousand and their joy upon hearing the prediction. The root treatise divides matters in detail where a doubt requires explanation and stops where the scripture can be read directly. Detail and brevity each have their place.
VI. What Actually Resolves the Doubt of the Eight Thousand Bodhisattvas?
The eight thousand bodhisattvas see śrāvakas apparently arouse the resolve today and immediately receive magnificent buddha-predictions; they also recall that bodhisattvas in the former Vaipulya teachings had to practice for immeasurable aeons before receiving such predictions, and doubt arises. If one sees only the present identity, Ānanda is merely an attendant. If one sees only the present moment, the prediction seems to have come too quickly. The Buddha’s reply does not suppress the doubt; it reveals the past that had been concealed.
Long ago, in the presence of Empty-King Buddha, the Buddha and Ānanda aroused the great resolve together and were fellow students. Their vows and practices later had different emphases: the Buddha constantly practiced with vigor and advanced first to buddhahood, while Ānanda constantly delighted in extensive learning and guarded the Dharma treasuries of present and future buddhas. That one now appears as the Buddha and the other as attendant does not mean their resolve began today. The prediction resolves the doubt precisely by disclosing beneath their present appearances the great resolve they aroused together long ago and Ānanda’s original vow.
Vigor and extensive learning each have what they carry in the root treatise: the Buddha advances first through vigor and attains buddhahood; through extensive learning, Ānanda still guards the scripture. Ānanda’s Trace as attendant, guarding the Dharma treasury, is the present manifestation of his original vow.
VII. From “As Stated in the Text” Back to the Scripture
The chapter’s final sentence is brief: the remaining predictions are all as stated in the scripture. Its immediate referents are the predictions for Rāhula and the two thousand. They include the two buddha-names Treader upon Seven-Jeweled Lotuses and Jewel-Mark, one person’s hidden practice that only the Buddha can know, and the simultaneous attainment of buddhahood by the two thousand throughout the ten directions.
The chapter begins by distinguishing names and closes with “as stated in the text.” It first distinguishes training and beyond training so that stages are not mixed together; then distinguishes collective and individual predictions so that receiving another individual prediction is not mistaken for having been omitted before; finally it returns to the scripture so that the commentary’s degrees of detail are not mistaken for presence or absence in the scripture’s meaning. The commentary speaks in detail where divisions are needed and stops at the remaining predictions. Stopping does not end understanding; it returns the reading to the scripture.
Through the Eye of the Wenjuji
The Fahua Wenjuji first illuminates the chapter title through the four siddhāntas. It correlates the difference between training and beyond training with the worldly, the stage of seeing the Way with the individual, the stage of cultivating the Way with the counteractive, and the stage beyond training with the ultimate; it adds that receiving a prediction is also the ultimate〔T34n1719 0304a14–0304a16〕. This is Zhanran’s expansion of the explanation through causes and conditions, not a table already set out word for word by the Wenju in this chapter.
For the explanation through the teachings, the Notes expressly judges that the first three sections are as stated in the root treatise and that everything from “investigating the tathāgata-garbha” onward belongs to the Perfect teaching〔0304a16–0304a17〕. It then connects contemplation with the six identities. First it says that the ultimate identity is beyond training, the other four identities are training, and the identity in principle is neither training nor beyond training. It then shifts perspective and says that all six identities are neither training nor beyond training, while from the identity in partial realization upward they are both training and beyond training〔0304a17–0304a20〕. The two expansions stand side by side; neither is a fixed table personally listed by Zhiyi.
Concerning the transmitted interlinear note in the root treatise, the Notes says, “‘And so forth’ means that the preceding has only been briefly indicated”〔0304a20〕. “Briefly indicated” means that the preceding readings can be developed further. What develops them remains the Mirror of the Notes and does not become the wording of the Wenju itself.
On why the two are placed below, the Notes first connects “among those numbered above” to the list of those known to the assembly in the Introduction chapter, then limits the two: “within the twelve hundred, they are still only the higher stream among those of lower faculties”〔0304a22–0304a23〕. This step first answers the two people’s doctrinal position among the twelve hundred, but does not yet fully answer why they were not placed in the preceding round.
The Notes therefore poses a further question of its own: “If so, this does not answer the preceding question. The question asks why they were not the same as those in the preceding round; the present answer says only that they are the higher among the lower. How does that answer the question?”〔0304a24〕. This inquiry is a further analytical question opened by the Mirror, not a variant transmission of Zhiyi’s original question. It distinguishes two matters: the two remain a higher stream among the twelve hundred, and they nevertheless are not included in the preceding round.
The Mirror closes with “Yet their not being among those above is for the sake of drawing beings to the real and because of the four siddhāntas”〔0304a26〕, while the preceding sentence explains their placement through drawing in those of lower faculties〔0304a23〕. These judgments resolve what remains implicit in the root treatise’s question and answer, but all belong to Zhanran’s Mirror. The root treatise’s own explicit answer remains that the two were already included in the collective prediction for the twelve hundred and now seek individual predictions.

This unit first explains the stage-based meanings of training and beyond training, then explains the chapter title in four passages: analyzing dharmas, embodying dharmas, proceeding from shallow to deep, and investigating the tathāgata-garbha. It next explains why the two thousand form a separate chapter, divides the requests for predictions from their bestowal, and uses one question and answer to explain why Ānanda and Rāhula receive separate predictions here. The final section analyzes only Ānanda’s prediction in detail, returning the predictions for Rāhula and the two thousand to the scripture itself.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
The strict domain is Taishō T34n1718〔0107b20–0107c24〕. The chapter heading 「釋授學無學人記品」 tr. “Explanation of the Chapter on Predictions for Those in Training and Beyond Training” begins at〔0107b20〕; the first graph of the opening sentence 「研真斷惑名為學,真窮惑盡名無學。」 tr. “Investigating the true and cutting off delusion is named training; exhausting the true and bringing delusion to an end is named beyond training” is at〔0107b21〕; and the final sentence 「餘記悉如文。」 tr. “The remaining predictions are all as stated in the text” is at〔0107c24〕. The next chapter, 「釋法師品」 tr. “Explanation of ‘The Dharma Teacher’ Chapter,” begins at〔0107c25〕 and is excluded.
This chapter stands at the end of the principal prediction teaching in the Trace Gate. The root treatise itself judges, 「此品是授記文中第二段也。」 tr. “This chapter is the second section in the prediction text”〔0107c03〕, and expressly divides it: 「就此文為二:一、請記,二、授記。」 tr. “This passage divides into two: first, requesting predictions; second, bestowing predictions”〔0107c03–0107c04〕. Following its own transitions, the text has five divisions:
| Sequence | Line Domain | Root Treatise Content |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0107b21–0107c02 | Explains the meanings of training and beyond training, interprets the chapter title in four passages, and explains the separate chapter through the two thousand belonging to one stream, receiving predictions at one time, and receiving one name |
| 2 | 0107c03–0107c04 | Judges this chapter the second section of the prediction text and generally divides it into requesting and bestowing predictions |
| 3 | 0107c04–0107c09 | Divides the request into that of the two people and of the two thousand; the request of the two again into silent thought and speech, and the speech into citing a precedent and invoking expectation |
| 4 | 0107c10–0107c16 | Asks why Ānanda and Rāhula are placed below; answers that they were already included in the collective prediction for the twelve hundred and now seek individual predictions; explains that the two thousand have only silent thought and the cited precedent |
| 5 | 0107c16–0107c24 | Divides the bestowal into predictions first for the two and then for the two thousand; further divides Ānanda’s prediction into prose, verse, doubt, resolution of doubt, and praise |
The Fahua Wenjuji gives the section title as 「釋受學無學人記品」 tr. “Explanation of the Chapter on Receiving Predictions for Those in Training and Beyond Training”〔T34n1719 0304a13〕. Its direct explanation runs from〔0304a14〕 through〔0304a26〕, after which this chapter’s section closes. The Wenju reads 授 tr. “bestow,” while the Notes reads 受 tr. “receive”; the two works differ graphically.
II. Formation and Transmission
The transmission layer of the whole work follows Shenjiong’s preface: the text 「迺是灌頂法師私記,合二十卷」 tr. “was privately recorded by Dharma Master Guanding and comprised twenty fascicles”〔T34n1718 0001a23–0001a24〕. In the wuxu year of the Tianbao era, the monk Lang of Qingtai Monastery in Dongyang Commandery found the transmitted sequence inconsistent; after an auspicious dream, he 「方始條倫」 tr. “only then began to order it into coherent sequence”〔0001b07〕, expressly stating that he had 「非苟求同異輒有增減於其間矣」 tr. “not carelessly sought sameness or difference by arbitrarily adding or subtracting within it”〔0001b07–0001b08〕. The half-fascicle containing this unit still bears the byline “spoken by Great Master Zhiyi of Tiantai.” The doctrinal teaching is therefore attributed to Zhiyi, while private recording and ordering belong to the transmission layer. The surviving evidence is insufficient to reconstruct the sequence before that ordering.
The chapter’s main text is short but its transmission traces are clear: one transmitted interlinear note, six Taishō/witness A variants, and the Hōryūji manuscript colophon at the end of the chapter. The available evidence presents variant readings but supplies no internal ground sufficient to decide between 授 tr. “bestow,” 受 tr. “receive,” or the other variant graphs.
III. Sutra Passages Explained and Works Cited
1. Identity and Coverage of the Root Scripture
The scripture attached to this chapter is Kumārajīva’s Lotus Sutra, T09n0262, “Chapter Nine: Predictions for Those in Training and Beyond Training.” This repository’s sealed root edition contains forty-eight content lines for the chapter, running from〔T09 0029b23〕 through〔0030b27〕. The tables below give all forty-eight lines individually, without using ellipses in place of Rāhula’s prediction or the prediction for the two thousand. The Wenju’s divisions and condensations occupy the final column; the wording of both texts is recorded side by side without adjudication.
A. Requesting Predictions
| Root Line | Present Text · First-Graph Position | T09n0262 Present Text Verbatim and Translation | T34n1718 Correlation |
|---|---|---|---|
tr. “At that time Ānanda and Rāhula each thought, ‘Again and again we have privately reflected: If we could receive predictions, would that not be a joy?’” tr. “They rose from their seats, went before the Buddha, bowed at His feet, and together said: ‘World-Honored One, we too should have a share in this. The Tathāgata alone is our refuge. We are known by all devas, humans, and asuras: Ānanda constantly serves as attendant and guards the Dharma treasury; Rāhula is the Buddha’s son. If the Buddha bestows predictions of unsurpassed, complete, perfect awakening upon us, our aspirations and the assembly’s hopes will both be fulfilled.’ The two thousand śrāvaka disciples in training and beyond training also rose, bared their right shoulders, joined their palms single-mindedly before the Buddha, gazed up at the World-Honored One, and, sharing the aspiration of Ānanda and Rāhula, stood to one side.” | The request divides into the two people and the two thousand; the two have silent thought and speech, while the two thousand correspond through their silent standing〔0107c04–0107c16〕 |

You will make offerings to 6.2 billion buddhas and guard their Dharma treasuries, and only afterward attain unsurpassed, complete, perfect awakening. You will teach and transform twenty thousand myriads of millions of bodhisattvas, as numerous as Ganges sands, and cause them to attain awakening. Your land, Ever-Standing Banner of Victory, will be pure, with lapis lazuli for its ground; the aeon will be Wondrous Sound Pervading All. Therefore I have already attained awakening, while Ānanda guards My Dharma and will guard the Dharma treasuries of future buddhas, teaching and bringing assemblies of bodhisattvas to fulfillment. Such was his original vow; therefore he receives this prediction.’” | 4. The Tathāgata reveals the Trace to resolve doubt; the root treatise condenses this as arousing the great resolve together, vigor, and extensive learning〔0107c21–0107c23〕 |

Your land, lifespan, disciples, true Dharma, and semblance Dharma will not differ from those of Sovereign King of Unhindered Wisdom of Mountains and Seas Tathāgata; you will also be that Buddha’s eldest son. Their lifespans will each be one aeon; their lands, śrāvakas, bodhisattvas, true Dharma, and semblance Dharma will all be equal.” | Receiving predictions at one time and receiving one name; the name Jewel-Mark is stated by the root scripture〔T34 0107c02〕 |
“At that time, wishing to proclaim this meaning again, the World-Honored One spoke in verse:” | Entrance to the verse for the two thousand |

tr. “My heart is completely filled with joy, as though nectar had been poured over me.” | Final sentence of the chapter; all as stated in the text |
The root-line numbers in the four tables run from 4 through 51, each appearing once, for a total of forty-eight lines. The T09n0262 chapter is completely covered by four sections: requesting predictions, Ānanda’s prediction, Rāhula’s prediction, and the prediction for the two thousand. The root treatise’s final sentence 「餘記悉如文」 tr. “The remaining predictions are all as stated in the text”〔T34 0107c24〕 means only that the commentary does not continue a sectional explanation; it does not mean that the latter two predictions in the root scripture may be omitted.

3. Other Citations and Comparative Language
The strict domain contains no named external scripture or treatise and no verbatim citation in the form “a certain scripture says” or “a certain treatise says.” There is therefore no external-text entry to list.
The root treatise does contain the comparison 「昔方等中記諸菩薩,無量劫行乃得佛記」 tr. “Formerly, in the Vaipulya teachings, bodhisattvas received predictions only after practicing for immeasurable aeons”〔T34n1718 0107c20–0107c21〕, but it names no scripture, chapter, or verbatim passage, so there is no external-text entry that can be uniquely located. The subsequent phrases about arousing the great resolve together, vigor, extensive learning, and attendance directly condense this chapter’s Empty-King Buddha episode and Ānanda’s verse, given above in rows eighteen and twenty-four.
IV. Essential Explanations from the Wenjuji [the Mirror]
The Mirror for this chapter in the Fahua Wenjuji is brief and concentrated. Its eleven essential statements follow; each is a Mirror explanation and is not retrojected as Zhiyi’s own wording:
First, it correlates the stages of training and beyond training with the four siddhāntas: 「因緣初文應具四悉,學無學別即世界,見道位即為人,脩道位即對治,無學位即第一義。」 tr. “The opening explanation through causes and conditions should include the four siddhāntas: the distinction between training and beyond training is the worldly; the stage of seeing the Way is the individual; the stage of cultivating the Way is the counteractive; and the stage beyond training is the ultimate”〔T34n1719 0304a14〕.
Second, it further correlates receiving a prediction with the ultimate: 「又得記即第一義。」 tr. “Further, receiving a prediction is the ultimate”〔0304a16〕.
Third, it expressly classifies the passage from investigating the tathāgata-garbha onward: 「約教者,三教如文,「研如來藏」去圓教。」 tr. “As for explanation through the teachings, the first three teachings are as in the text; from ‘investigating the tathāgata-garbha’ onward is the Perfect teaching”〔0304a16〕.
Fourth, it gives a first expansion through contemplation and the six identities: 「又如通序中釋若約觀心者,六即之中究竟即為無學位,餘四名為學,理即非學非無學。」 tr. “Further, as explained in the general introduction, if approached through contemplation, among the six identities the ultimate identity is the stage beyond training, the other four are named training, and the identity in principle is neither training nor beyond training”〔0304a17–0304a19〕.
Fifth, it gives another expansion of the six identities: 「又六即者,通皆非學非無學,分真已去而學而無學。」 tr. “Again, all six identities are generally neither training nor beyond training; from the identity in partial realization onward they are both training and beyond training”〔0304a19–0304a20〕.
Sixth, it explains the transmitted interlinear note: 「「云云」者,如向略舉。」 tr. “‘And so forth’ means that the preceding has only been briefly indicated”〔0304a20〕.
Seventh, it connects “those numbered above” to the assembly listed in the common introduction: 「「二人在上數中」者,在多知識中列,今之得記何為在此?」 tr. “‘The two were among those numbered above’ means that they were listed among those known to many. Why, in receiving predictions now, are they here?”〔0304a21〕.
Eighth, it delimits the stream to which they belong: 「答中總論得記,在千二百中仍是下根中之上流耳。」 tr. “The answer speaks generally of receiving predictions: among the twelve hundred they are still only the higher stream among those of lower faculties”〔0304a22〕.
Ninth, it explains why the two are listed in this round: 「雖有多人所識,意為引下根故也。」 tr. “Although they are known to many, the intention is to draw in those of lower faculties”〔0304a23〕.
Tenth, the Mirror poses a further question of its own: 「若爾不答上問,問意何不同上周,今答中但云下中之上,如何稱問?」 tr. “If so, this does not answer the preceding question. The question asks why they were not the same as those in the preceding round; the present answer says only that they are the higher among the lower. How does that answer the question?”〔0304a24〕.
Eleventh, it closes through drawing beings to the real and the four siddhāntas: 「然非上者,為引實故、四悉檀故。」 tr. “Yet their not being among those above is for the sake of drawing beings to the real and because of the four siddhāntas”〔0304a26〕.
The root treatise does not itself set out the four siddhāntas, six identities, “the higher stream among those of lower faculties,” drawing in those of lower faculties, or drawing beings to the real. All eleven statements above are Mirror explanations from the Notes, not the self-statement of this chapter in the Wenju.
V. Explanations of Various Masters
Within the strict domain of this chapter in T34n1718, none of the seven markers “someone says,” “someone states,” “or it is said,” “an old explanation says,” “explainers differ,” “one explanation says,” or “a master says” occurs. The root treatise therefore records no divergent explanations here.
In 「是二千人,或是學或是無學人」 tr. “among these two thousand, some are in training and some beyond training”〔0107c01〕, the two instances of “some” list two identities among the two thousand; they are not two masters’ divergent explanations. The root treatise’s own question and answer〔0107c10–0107c16〕 likewise is not another master’s view. The Fahua Wenjuji’s two expansions through the six identities belong to the Mirror and therefore are not divergent explanations recorded by the root treatise.
VI. Terminology
| Term | Root Treatise’s Own Explanation | Layer and Limit |
|---|---|---|
“investigating the true and cutting off delusion”; 研修真理、慕求勝見 tr. “cultivating the true and aspiring to superior vision”; the stage lies in the genuine uncontaminated wisdom of the three fruits and four approaches〔0107b21–0107b23〕 | A stage term, not a general identity as a student |
“exhausting the true and bringing delusion to an end”; at arhatship, investigation into principle is exhausted, superior vision has reached its limit, and there is nothing further to learn〔0107b21–0107b24〕 | “Nothing further to learn” is limited by the preceding sentence; it does not mean that nothing of any kind need ever be learned |
“analyzing dharmas · embodying dharmas” | Analyzing dharmas and investigating the true belongs to the Tripiṭaka meaning; embodying dharmas and investigating the true belongs to the Shared meaning〔0107b24–0107b27〕 | This passage does not unfold the complete argument for either |
“shared and distinct delusions · provisional and real principles” | The Distinct meaning describes beyond training as exhausting shared and distinct delusions and fathoming provisional and real principles〔0107b27–0107b28〕 | The root treatise lists only two paired expressions and gives no table of stages |
“tathāgata-garbha · Dharma-nature and true mark” | Investigating the tathāgata-garbha permits speech of training and beyond training; Dharma-nature and true mark are neither training nor beyond training, yet both training and beyond training〔0107b28–0107c01〕 | Perfect teaching and the six identities are expansions from the Mirror, not the root treatise’s own statement |
“one stream · one name” | Among the two thousand, some are in training and some beyond training; they belong to one stream, receive predictions at one time, and receive one name〔0107c01–0107c02〕 | Here the root treatise says only that they receive one name; the name Jewel-Mark appears in the root scripture |
“intimate and weighty · intimate and foremost” | Rāhula is the Buddha’s son, intimate and weighty in worldly kinship; Ānanda guards the Buddha’s Dharma treasury, intimate and foremost in the Way〔0107c08〕 | The Wenju uses the short form 羅雲 tr. “Rāhula”; the root scripture has 羅睺羅 |
“higher stream · individual prediction” | The two were already included in the collective prediction for the twelve hundred and now seek individual predictions for themselves〔0107c11–0107c13〕 | “Higher stream among those of lower faculties” is the Mirror’s qualification |
“silent thought · spoken request · citing a precedent · invoking expectation” | The two people’s request has silent thought and speech; the speech has a cited precedent and the invocation of expectation〔0107c05–0107c07〕 | The two thousand have only silent thought and the cited precedent |
“revealing the Trace to resolve doubt · disclosing the Origin and expressing praise” | The fourth and fifth parts of Ānanda’s fivefold prediction〔0107c16–0107c18〕 | The Tathāgata first reveals the Trace to resolve doubt; Ānanda afterward discloses his Origin and expresses praise |
VII. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
The chapter establishes no extended parable of its own, but three sets of scriptural images are visible. First, the two thousand join their palms single-mindedly, gaze up at the World-Honored One, and do not speak〔T09 0029b23〕. This turns the root treatise’s divisions of silent thought and cited precedent from a mere outline into a posture of requesting Dharma: standing, palms joined, gazing upward. Second, they belong to one stream, receive predictions at one time, and receive one name〔T34 0107c02〕; the root scripture unfolds the shared prediction through lands in the ten directions, sitting at the place of awakening at the same time, and all being named Jewel-Mark〔T09 0030b06–0030b23〕. Third, Ānanda recollects the Dharma treasuries of past buddhas, and at the end the two thousand compare the joy of hearing their predictions to being anointed with nectar〔0030a07, 0030b27〕.
Read alongside the same chapter in this repository’s Lotus Sutra, the Wenju’s choices become visible. It finely divides the request into silent thought, speech, cited precedent, and invoked expectation, and divides Ānanda’s prediction into five sections. When it reaches the predictions for Rāhula and the two thousand, it sends the reader back to the root scripture with 「餘記悉如文」 tr. “The remaining predictions are all as stated in the text”〔T34 0107c24〕. Detailed explanation and “as stated in the text” are not judgments of relative importance; they are two modes of explaining the passage. One reveals meaning through divisions, while the other lets the scripture unfold itself.
The chapter also looks back to the assembly in the Introduction and to the preceding chapter’s collective prediction for the twelve hundred. Ānanda and Rāhula were already among those known to the assembly and had already received the collective prediction with the twelve hundred, yet they still seek individual predictions here. Their placement below therefore does not omit their earlier position; it distinguishes collective from individual prediction. This reading carries forward into later chapter explanations: when the root treatise refers back to an earlier passage, a figure’s doctrinal position is tied both to that person’s prior place in the scripture and to the new division at hand. Present chapter order alone is insufficient to determine that position.
VIII. Placement of the Editions
1. Six Taishō/Witness A Variants in the Strict Domain
| Line Anchor | Type | Taishō | Witness A | Short Context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0107b24 | Numbered variant | 學 tr. “nothing further to learn / awaken; therefore called beyond training” |
| 0107c05 | Numbered variant; empty reading | 人 tr. “people” | Absent in witness A | 二者二千人請 tr. “second, the request of the two thousand people” |
| 0107c08 | Numbered variant | 雲 tr. “cloud; name graph” | 云 tr. “Rāhula is the Buddha’s son” |
| 0107c13 | Asterisk variant referring to prior note | 雲 tr. “cloud; name graph” | 云 tr. “Rāhula’s rank as disciple” |
| 0107c13 | Asterisk variant referring to prior note | 學 tr. “therefore included in the chapter on training and beyond training; first graph” |
| 0107c14 | Asterisk variant referring to prior note | 學 tr. “chapter on training and beyond training; second graph” |
The first three pairs appear in the main text with numbered anchors. The latter three use asterisk spans whose corresp attributes point back to earlier critical notes. Their line anchors remain the actual positions where the graphs recur in the main text〔0107c13, 0107c13, 0107c14〕; they are not moved back to their first appearances at〔0107b24, 0107c08〕. Witness A’s reading in the second pair contains zero graphs and is therefore explicitly recorded as absent rather than allowing the inventory to shrink to five pairs.
2. Interlinear Note, Fascicle-End Colophon, and Uncommon Graph
The chapter’s main text contains one transmitted interlinear note: 而學而無學〔云云〕 tr. “yet both training and beyond training [and so forth].” The note’s actual position falls after the page break at〔0107c01〕. The reader edition renders it as〔云云〕, distinct from the main text.
After the last main-text sentence comes a fascicle-end critical note beginning 法華文句卷第七終【甲】 tr. “End of Fascicle Seven of the Fahua Wenju [witness A]”〔0107c24〕, followed by the Hōryūji manuscript colophon. It is neither Zhiyi’s chapter text nor a seventh main-text variant. The colophon contains the uncommon graph 「䉼」 tr. “[an uncommon graph],” CBETA code CB02129, composed as〔米*斤〕; the encoding data gives 「料」 tr. “liao [the normalized form]” as its normalized form. The chapter’s main text itself contains no uncommon graph.
3. Page-Anchor Convention
The source edition uses one page-change anchor and precise in-line anchors at the beginnings of paragraphs. The heading is marked before〔T34 0107b20〕; when the main text crosses to the next page, the page anchor is carried by the paragraph containing〔0107c01〕. It does not add anchors for every column or sentence. Quotation anchors in the apparatus are separately taken from the nearest Taishō line marker before the quotation’s first graph. The chapter heading is therefore at〔0107b20〕 and the first sentence must be tied to〔0107b21〕. Asterisk variants likewise use the location where the graph recurs, not the identifier of the critical note to which they refer.
