心要Essence

We often assume that knowing means we should pronounce judgment at once. We see a portent, seize upon a clue, and hurry to announce the conclusion, as though the speed of our answer proved the clarity of our sight.

Mañjuśrī does not answer in this way. He first reflects, measuring the present against the past. He then briefly cites something he personally witnessed, before recounting at length one buddha, twenty thousand buddhas, and the last of those buddhas. Only when the portents of past and present correspond one by one does he clearly judge that the Buddha will teach the Lotus.

It is not that he does not know. He is caring for how his hearers come to know.

When an answer arrives too quickly, hearers can grasp only its conclusion. When an answer lets them see how it is established, they can travel from portents to Dharma meaning and from a dim likeness to clarity. To answer well is not merely to pour out what one knows. It is to enable another person to reach the same place by a path they too can follow.

Along this path, the portents are not spectacles. The Dharma rain falls so that a seed may germinate. The Dharma conch sounds so that an old designation may change. The Dharma drum is beaten so that those who have stopped will advance. A single beam of light joins this land to other lands and the present day to the distant past.

If one sees rain but will not germinate, hears the conch but clings to the old name, hears the drum but remains where one is, or stands within the light while treating it only as an astonishing sight, the portents may have appeared, but their question and answer have not yet been completed in oneself.

This passage also says that even when a boat follows the current, it may still receive the wind and still require the oars. Traveling in the right direction does not mean that effort can cease. Seeing the Buddha and hearing the Dharma are the wind; one's own cultivation is the oar. Genuine spontaneous accord is not doing nothing. It is no longer moving against the current while making good use of every supporting condition.

The final four verses successively remove doubts about name, substance, tenet, and function. This also reminds us that the value of a question does not lie in prolonging it without end. A good question compels the real answer to unfold; a good answer enables the doubts that should cease finally to cease.

The next time you very quickly think that you “already know,” pause once more: Have I merely seen a portent, or have I seen how it accords with everything before and after it? Am I hurrying to deliver a conclusion, or can I enable someone else to reach it as well?

To proceed from reflection to clear judgment is not indecision. It is compassionately laying out a path that another person can walk.

Plain reading

I. The Answer Has Four Levels

The portion from Mañjuśrī's address to Maitreya through the verses at the end of the Introduction chapter is called the answer section of the specific introduction. It contains both prose and verse. The prose has four answers. First, the passage beginning when Mañjuśrī “spoke to Maitreya” is the answer through reflection and estimation. Second, the passage beginning “Good sons, in the past I” is the brief answer through what was formerly seen. Third, the passage beginning “Good sons, in the inconceivably distant past” is the extensive answer through what was formerly seen. Fourth, the passage beginning “The portents now seen do not differ from those of the past” is the answer through clear judgment.

When someone at a lower stage estimates the intent of a sage at a higher stage, they must first make an approximate assessment, comparing an event of the past with an event of the present. They cannot begin with a sudden and explicit judgment. Mañjuśrī therefore starts with only a close approximation and then briefly cites something he personally saw in the past. Because a brief citation is still not comprehensive, he next recounts former events at length, using the many examples of past buddhas to establish what the present Buddha is about to do. Only afterward does he make a clear judgment.

The reflective answer responds to Maitreya's doubt about the portents in this land. The brief account of what was formerly seen responds to his doubt about the portents in other lands. The extensive account responds to both sides, this land and other lands. The final clear judgment likewise decides the matter for both lands.

II. Reflection: Why Deliberate before Judging?

The reflective answer has two parts: first it marks out the division, and then it explains reflection and estimation. “Reflect” emphasizes thinking, while “estimate” emphasizes measuring. The present is measured by the past, and the past is measured by the present. Yet Mañjuśrī is himself an ancient buddha. Could he truly not know? He is simply manifesting the appearance of deliberation in the identity he displays here.

Guangzhai classifies the first and last of the five statements as direct teachings and says that they respectively present cause and effect in brief and at length. He classifies the three statements in between as similes. On his reading, “wishing to teach the great Dharma” briefly opens the three vehicles and reveals the one, and also briefly reveals distant buddhahood through buddhahood attained in the near past. “Expounding the meaning of the great Dharma” opens the three and reveals the one at length, and also extensively reveals the distant through the near. “Raining the great Dharma rain” is a simile for those of the two vehicles receiving predictions and being able to become buddhas. Their causes and effects had formerly been taken as fixed, and they were thought unable to become buddhas, like something parched for lack of water; now that all can become buddhas, they resemble something moistened by rain. Blowing the Dharma conch symbolizes changing the designation of the three vehicles. Beating the solemn drum to warn the troops symbolizes breaking ignorance.

Master Zhiyi says that this allocation of the direct teachings cannot be accepted. Why? The circumstances that occasion questions in the Trace and Origin Gates are not the same. The occasion for the Trace Gate has already appeared, so Maitreya doubts and Mañjuśrī explains it for him. The occasion for the Origin Gate has not yet appeared. What could Maitreya doubt at this point, and what could Mañjuśrī resolve? If doubt about revealing distant buddhahood through buddhahood attained in the near past had already been answered here, why would Maitreya doubt again when the earth later splits and bodhisattvas emerge from beneath it? If he still had to ask again, both passages would contain groundless questions and groundless explanations. If the later explanation were superfluous, the earlier one would be equally mistaken. This would seriously obstruct the sequence of questions and answers throughout the sutra, so the interpretation is not used.

Here Maitreya asks only about the portents of this and other lands within the Trace Gate. Mañjuśrī's reflective answer likewise concerns only the Trace Gate and has nothing to do with the Origin Gate disclosed in “The Lifespan of the Tathāgata.” “Wishing to teach the great Dharma” answers the portent of teaching. “Raining the great Dharma rain” answers the portent of raining flowers. “Blowing the great Dharma conch” answers the portent of joy arising in the assembly. “Beating the great Dharma drum” answers the portent of the earth's movement. “Expounding the meaning of the great Dharma” answers the portent of the Buddha's emission of light.

“Wishing to teach the great Dharma” means that Mañjuśrī reflects as follows: after buddhas of the past taught the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, they opened the expedient and revealed the real, gathering immeasurable Dharma gates into the One Vehicle. Since the present Buddha has also taught the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, he too should open the expedient and reveal the real, bringing the immeasurable back to the one. This one is the great Dharma.

“Raining the great Dharma rain” means that Mañjuśrī reflects as follows: after buddhas of the past rained the four kinds of celestial flower, living beings universally entered the ten abodes, ten practices, ten dedications, and ten grounds—the complete causes of buddhahood. After the present Buddha rains flowers, living beings should likewise accomplish the causes of buddhahood and enter the ten abodes, ten practices, ten dedications, and ten grounds. Hence it is called raining the great Dharma rain.

“Blowing the great Dharma conch” means that Mañjuśrī reflects as follows: when the fourfold assemblies of the past saw the portents, they rejoiced at what they had never experienced before. Their obstructions were removed, their capacities to receive the Dharma were activated, and transformations occurred in person, teaching, practice, and principle. The present assembly's joy should likewise remove obstructions and activate its capacity to receive the Dharma, transforming person, teaching, practice, and principle. Because the change is profound, it is called blowing the great Dharma conch.

“Beating the great Dharma drum” means that Mañjuśrī reflects as follows: after the earth moved in the past, there were six rounds of breaking the thief of ignorance. After the present Buddha makes the earth move, there should likewise be six rounds of breaking delusions of ignorance. Because the teaching-sound he sends forth is supremely subtle, it is called beating the great Dharma drum.

“Expounding the meaning of the great Dharma” means that Mañjuśrī reflects as follows: after buddhas of the past emitted light from the white curl between their brows, they taught the Lotus Sutra and made clear that the Buddha path practiced in their lands and in this land was the same. After the present Buddha emits light, he should likewise explain at length that the paths practiced by the five buddhas are the same. Because the Dharma taught is the Buddha path, this is called expounding the meaning of the great Dharma.

All five statements use events of the past to judge events of the present and events of the present to compare with those of the past. Matching words to meanings, it may appear that only the portent of entering samādhi is missing. Yet the rain of flowers, movement of the earth, emission of light, and other portents can all occur because the Buddha has entered samādhi. Entering samādhi is therefore included in meaning, and no further doubt need arise. The answer is called brief only because this one item is not separately listed in the words.

III. The Great Dharma Is General; Rain, Conch, Drum, and Meaning Are Particular

Another level of explanation is also possible: the first statement is general and the following four are particular. The general is the great Dharma. The particulars are raining, blowing the conch, beating the drum, and expounding. They respectively unfold opening, revealing, awakening to, and entering. The sky itself, for example, cannot be called small or large, red or white, although flowers descending from the sky differ in size and in red or white color.

Ultimate truth itself likewise cannot be equated with opening, revealing, awakening to, and entering. Yet when living beings see this principle, they can realize opening, revealing, awakening to, and entering. It is like a seed moistened by rain, whose sprout breaks through the husk. When the great Dharma rain is heard today, the seed of Dharma-nature is moistened, the husk of ignorance is broken, and the Buddha's knowledge and vision are opened in the ten abodes.

Again, hearing the sound of a conch lets one know that a designation will change. Compare what is attained today with what was attained before: one had previously attained the ten abodes, and now, hearing the Buddha-Dharma again from within the ten abodes, one turns and enters the ten practices. This is revealing the Buddha's knowledge and vision.

Again, hearing a drum lets one know that troops are being warned and urged forward. Compare what is attained today with what was attained before: one was previously in the ten practices, and now, hearing the Dharma from within the ten practices, one is spurred onward and turns to enter the ten dedications. This is awakening to the Buddha's knowledge and vision.

“Expounding” means spreading broadly in the horizontal direction and penetrating deeply in the vertical direction. Only this is expounding Dharma meaning. Compare what is attained today with what was attained before: one was previously in the ten dedications, and now advances from the ten dedications into the ten grounds. This is entering the Buddha's knowledge and vision. One thereby reaches the very source and exhausts the farthest boundary, complete in both depth and breadth.

Mañjuśrī reflects that opening, revealing, awakening to, and entering followed the six portents of the past. Measuring the present by them, the same should follow today's portents. This completes the horizontal and vertical explanations of the reflective answer.

IV. The Brief Account of What Was Formerly Seen: Answering the Question about Other Lands through Light

The passage beginning when Mañjuśrī says, “In the past I,” is the second answer, the brief account of what was formerly seen. He first reflected and estimated through his own wisdom. Now he briefly cites something he personally saw, making the answer somewhat clearer than the preceding level. This passage responds to the question about other lands.

Of the six portents in this land, the five other than emitted light cannot reach throughout other lands. Only the single portent of light illuminates everywhere to the east. The brief account therefore answers specifically through what the emitted light discloses. From this we know that it answers the question about other lands.

What is seen today is like what was seen in the past, and what was seen in the past was just like what is seen today. The Buddha manifests portents so that all living beings can hear and know. “Hear” and “know” may be divided into the wisdoms of hearing and reflection, or into practice through faith and practice through the Dharma. Gathering immeasurable Dharma gates into the One Vehicle; transforming the people, teachings, practices, and principles of the three vehicles; breaking delusions of ignorance in six rounds; revealing that the paths practiced by all buddhas are the same; and enabling living beings to open, reveal, awaken to, and enter the Buddha's knowledge and vision—these are why it is called a Dharma difficult for all worlds to believe.

V. The Extensive Account: The Time, Name, and Teaching of the First Buddha

The passage beginning “In the inconceivably distant past” is the third answer, the extensive account of what was formerly seen. It is clearer than the brief account and answers doubts concerning both this and other lands. Maitreya asks after seeing, horizontally through the Buddha's light, the lands of the east. Mañjuśrī answers by vertically recounting what he saw in the past. Horizontal vision across space and vertical vision through time mutually disclose that the paths practiced by all buddhas are the same.

The extensive account has three levels. First it cites the sameness of one buddha, then that of twenty thousand buddhas, and finally that of the last buddha. The first buddha is explained through three items: first the time, second the buddha's name, and third how he taught the Dharma.

The scripture says that there was a buddha named Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance. A buddha's common epithets can be the same as those of the present Buddha, but the individual names are plainly different. Why are they nonetheless called the same? Although the names differ, the meanings they represent are the same. The sun signifies wisdom and the moon concentration; concentration and wisdom are the virtues of one's own practice, while lamp radiance signifies the virtue of transforming others. The present Buddha's name Śākyamuni—Able and Humane—likewise includes concentration and wisdom, accomplishing oneself and benefiting others. Sun, moon, and lamp may also be matched to three kinds of wisdom, which the present Buddha likewise possesses. Names vary with causes and conditions, but their meaning does not differ; hence the name is said to be the same.

The passage beginning “He expounded the right Dharma” explains the third item, sameness in teaching. The former buddha first taught the sudden Dharma and afterward unfolded the gradual Dharma. The present Buddha likewise teaches the sudden before the gradual, and in this respect they are the same. “He expounded the right Dharma, good at the beginning, good in the middle, and good at the end” refers to the sudden teaching. The language of seven excellences can apply generally to both the great and lesser vehicles. According to the meaning of this passage, however, these are the seven excellences of the great vehicle.

First, goodness at the beginning, middle, and end respectively refers to the sudden teaching's introduction, main teaching, and transmission; this is excellence in time. Second, “its meaning was deep and far-reaching” means that the principle of the sudden teaching is ultimate and definitive, so that the two vehicles cannot fathom its boundary or depth; this is excellence in meaning. Third, “its words were skillful and subtle” means that the Buddha spoke in eight kinds of beautiful voice directly accordant with truth, bringing delight to bodhisattvas; this is excellence in language. Fourth, “pure and unmixed” means it was not shared with the two vehicles; this is the excellence of being unique. Fifth, “complete” means that it fully explained the Dharma of complete expression both within and beyond the realm; this is the excellence of completeness. Sixth, “pure white” means it lacked the flaws and defilements of the two extremes; this is the excellence of pliancy. A master's explanation instead calls it excellence in practice, and both readings are preserved. Seventh, “the mark of brahma conduct” means that “brahma” represents the unconditional loving-kindness of the sudden teaching; this is the excellence of loving-kindness.

Interpreters do not entirely agree on goodness at the beginning, middle, and end. For the moment, the present explanation follows one line of meaning. According to the lesser vehicle, moral discipline, concentration, and wisdom may be classified as the three goodnesses. According to the great vehicle, the initial aspiration, the mind in the intermediate course, and the final mind may be so classified. The Golden Light Sutra also says that the Tathāgata of the former mind is inconceivable, the Tathāgata of the middle mind has every kind of adornment, and the Tathāgata of the latter mind cannot be destroyed. This too expresses the meaning of three goodnesses.

Mañjuśrī cites the seven excellences of the sudden teaching spoken by a buddha of the past to show that they were the same as the seven excellences of the sudden Dharma taught by the present Buddha and as the initial sudden teaching of the buddhas seen in other lands within the light. Why use this passage in the answer? Maitreya had horizontally seen, through the Buddha's light, the buddhas in other lands as holy lords and lions expounding scriptures that were wondrous and foremost. Mañjuśrī now cites the past vertically, directly answering that question.

After the sudden Dharma, the ancient buddha unfolded the gradual. For those seeking to become śrāvakas he taught the corresponding Dharma of the Four Truths, answering Maitreya's earlier question about people who undergo suffering and to whom the Buddha therefore teaches nirvāṇa. For those seeking to become pratyekabuddhas he taught the corresponding Dharma of the twelve links of dependent origination, answering the question about people who possess merit and aspire to a superior Dharma. For bodhisattvas he taught the corresponding six perfections, answering the question about children of the Buddha who cultivate many kinds of practice. All three cite the ancient buddha's unfolding of the gradual Dharma, showing his sameness with the present Buddha and the buddhas of other lands.

“Enabling living beings to attain unsurpassed complete awakening and accomplish all-mode wisdom” explains that after the ancient buddha unfolded the sudden and gradual Dharmas, he again revealed the real, bringing what he taught from beginning to end to ultimate completion. It also answers Maitreya's doubts on seeing buddhas in other lands enter nirvāṇa and jeweled stūpas raised after their nirvāṇa. The passage through the six perfections says that the present Buddha is already the same as buddhas of the past. The passage from accomplishing unsurpassed awakening and all-mode wisdom onward says that the present Buddha will also be the same as the buddhas of the past in the future. 〔And so forth: the remainder is abbreviated.〕

VI. The Twenty Thousand Buddhas and the Last Buddha

The account next cites twenty thousand buddhas and says that their names and teachings were all the same. The first single buddha is described in full as the same in both sudden and gradual teaching. For the intervening twenty thousand, only sameness in the sudden teaching is mentioned, and therefore only goodness at the beginning, middle, and end is stated. For the last buddha, only sameness in unfolding the gradual is mentioned. Why arrange the account this way? The three passages mutually indicate one another, so that what comes before and after can supply what each omits. No buddhas before the twenty thousand are cited because these twenty thousand had the same name and teaching, making them the most convenient group to recount according to the meaning.

The surname Poluoduo is translated as “Swift”; ancient translations also give “Sharp Faculties” and “Full Speech.” All three translations are recorded.

The passage beginning “That last buddha” is the third level, citing the sameness of one buddha. It has three divisions. First, something Mañjuśrī formerly saw in the distant past is the same as something belonging to the present Buddha's more recent past. Second, something formerly seen is the same as the portents now before the assembly. Third, something formerly seen is the same as what will happen after the present Buddha emerges from samādhi.

“Formerly” refers to what was experienced in the distant past, while “already” refers to what has passed more recently. Both are over, and both describe something that has occurred; here the distant is called “formerly,” while the more recent past is called “already.” The six portents before the assembly are called “now,” and what follows the Buddha's emergence from samādhi is called “will be.”

First, the passage beginning with the last buddha's eight princes presents the correspondence between the “formerly” and the “already.” The former buddha had eight sons, while the present Buddha has only one. Although the numbers are not equal, both were born in a land inhabited together by ordinary and noble beings. Because such a land still contains the delusions of views and thought, both buddhas manifest having sons. Their having sons is the same, while one and eight represent different things in response to different conditions: the birth of one son generally represents the one pure path, while the birth of eight sons represents the Eightfold Path. The numbers differ but their meanings correspond. Here only the shared fact of having sons is taken.

Someone further asks: after the former buddha's sons left home, they aroused the Mahāyāna mind, whereas the present Buddha's son Rāhula abides in the fruition of the lesser vehicle. How can these be the same? The former buddha's course of transformation has already been completed, and the origin of his eight sons has already been disclosed, so the scripture says that they aroused the Mahāyāna mind. The origin of the present Buddha's work has not yet been disclosed, and Rāhula is still described as an arhat. Once the following text reveals his bodhisattva ground of origin, their meaning will be the same.

VII. The Correspondence between the “Formerly” and the “Now”: Six Portents and Five Divisions

The passage beginning with Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance Buddha's teaching of a Mahāyāna scripture is the second division, the correspondence between the “formerly” and the “now.” All six portents in the former buddha's own land were the same as those of the present, in the sequence given in the scripture. The scripture summarizes the six portents in the former buddha's other lands by saying that they were “just like the buddha lands seen today.” We therefore know that the six portents in those other lands were likewise the same as today's.

Within the specific introduction concerning the former buddha, the manifestation of portents and the arising of doubt are explicitly described as the same, but the gathering of the assembly, question, and answer are not. Inferring from the meaning, however, one can still know that all three existed. Since it says that the Buddha taught the Dharma, an assembly must have gathered. Since it says the assembly doubted, someone should have asked a question. If someone asked, someone must have answered. The two divisions explicitly listed thus allow the other three to be known as well, so all five divisions are the same.

Moreover, if Mañjuśrī had recounted the question and answer of the past in full, there would have been no need to spend so many words answering today. He does not state the former answer and does not list the former question. Their meaning can naturally be understood.

VIII. The Correspondence between the “Formerly” and What “Will Be”: Six Items Matched One by One

The passage beginning with the appearance of the bodhisattva Wondrous Light is the third division, the correspondence between the “formerly” and what “will be.” It has six items. First, Wondrous Light is the person addressed; this is correspondence in the person occasioning the teaching. Second, the Dharma that Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance Buddha teaches after emerging from samādhi corresponds in name. Third, the sixty minor eons correspond in duration. Fourth, after teaching the scripture he announces his extinction to Brahmā gods, māras, śramaṇas, and brahmans; this is correspondence in the announcement of extinction. Fifth, the bodhisattva Virtue Treasury receives a prediction; this is correspondence in prediction. Sixth, after the buddha enters extinction at midnight, Wondrous Light propagates the scripture; this is correspondence in transmission of the scripture after extinction.

First consider correspondence in the person addressed. The buddha of the past emerges from concentration and teaches the scripture on account of the bodhisattva Wondrous Light. The present Buddha emerges from concentration and teaches it to the śrāvaka Śāriputra. Since their identities differ, how can this be called the same?

Master Yao says: “Here ‘on account of’ means entrustment. The Buddha entrusts the scripture of the One Vehicle to someone able to transmit and preserve it; the phrase does not refer only to the person directly addressed during the main teaching. Why must the person directly addressed by the former buddha have been Wondrous Light? In the same way, although the present Buddha directly teaches Śāriputra, Śāriputra is not necessarily the person most able to propagate and transmit it. In terms of entrustment and propagation, no one in the past surpassed Wondrous Light and no one today surpasses Mañjuśrī. The present Buddha did not especially praise Mañjuśrī, so why must the former buddha have especially praised Wondrous Light? Mañjuśrī cites the former buddha's praise of Wondrous Light precisely to show that Wondrous Light could receive the entrustment.”

Another old interpretation identifies Medicine King as the person who occasions the present Buddha's teaching. This affords some comparison, but when the past is used to establish the present, the two sides are not very similar. Yet another interpretation says that Mañjuśrī's resolution of the doubt enables the Buddha to emerge from samādhi and teach the scripture. This correspondence is also unsuitable.

Master Zhiyi says that these readings should not be accepted. The scripture plainly says that Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance Buddha gave the main teaching on account of Wondrous Light, yet this is explained as transmission by Wondrous Light, while Medicine King is taken as a separate example. This openly resists the Buddha's words; how can it count as explaining the scripture? The former buddha teaches on account of Wondrous Light, and the present Buddha on account of Śāriputra. They correspond precisely as the persons directly addressed.

The former buddha's eight princes took Wondrous Light as their teacher. Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance Buddha addressed Wondrous Light when he emerged from samādhi and then entrusted the scripture to him. The present Buddha's son Rāhula likewise took Śāriputra as his teacher. The Buddha addresses Śāriputra when he emerges from samādhi and entrusts the scripture to him after completing the teaching of the Trace Gate. What more direct correspondence could surpass this parity between past and present? Why abandon Śāriputra, who stands close at hand, and reach far ahead to Medicine King?

Someone objects: “Wondrous Light is a bodhisattva, while Śāriputra is a śrāvaka. How can they be the same?”

The answer is that the event of the past has already been fully revealed, so Wondrous Light is called a bodhisattva. The present event has not yet been disclosed, so Śāriputra is provisionally called a śrāvaka. Once his ground of origin is revealed, one will know that Śāriputra is a great bodhisattva. How, then, could they not correspond? Wondrous Light manifested a descended identity in the past, so how could one determine that he never manifested as a śrāvaka? This is Mañjuśrī's skillful narration, allowing expedient identities to be concealed in one place and revealed in another.

Second is correspondence in the name of the teaching. In the Buddha's light, Maitreya sees buddhas in other lands first teach the sudden Dharma and then the gradual. After the gradual teaching, he sees bodhisattvas perform many kinds of practice. After these various practices, he does not see an assembly in the light in which the Lotus is taught; he sees only a buddha's nirvāṇa. Mañjuśrī now answers that he formerly saw a buddha first teach the sudden Dharma, then unfold the gradual, and then, after many kinds of practice, teach the Lotus and enter nirvāṇa as soon as the Lotus had been taught. This clearly and decisively answers the question about other lands.

Third is correspondence in duration. The former buddha teaches for sixty minor eons, although the assembly experiences the interval as the short time of a single meal. At another assembly fifty minor eons pass, though the gathering experiences them as half a day. Each set of numbers remains distinct; their meaning is the same only in the way a long time can be felt as short.

Fourth is correspondence in the announcement of extinction. After teaching the Lotus, the former buddha announces that he will enter nirvāṇa; Kāśyapa Buddha likewise did so. 〔And so forth: the remainder is abbreviated.〕 In “Beholding the Jeweled Stūpa,” the present Buddha also says that the Tathāgata will enter nirvāṇa before long. The work of transforming living beings has been completed, so the announcement of extinction in the two cases corresponds.

Fifth is correspondence in prediction. The former buddha bestows a prediction on the bodhisattva Virtue Treasury, whereas the present scripture bestows predictions on śrāvakas. How can these be the same? The event of the past is already complete, so Mañjuśrī directly says that a bodhisattva receives a prediction. In reality, it likewise gathers the three vehicles into the One Vehicle and enables śrāvakas to receive predictions. If Mañjuśrī had begun by saying that the former buddha predicted buddhahood for śrāvakas, what would remain for the present Buddha to disclose after emerging from samādhi? Mañjuśrī narrates skillfully and therefore does not expose the śrāvakas' manifested identities in advance. If he says only that a bodhisattva receives a prediction, an event common in other scriptures, those attached to the teachings they already hold will not yet be startled. 〔And so forth: the remainder is abbreviated.〕

IX. Transmission after Extinction and Maitreya's Question

Sixth is correspondence in transmission after extinction, which has five items. First is the time, after the Buddha's extinction. Second is the person who propagates the scripture, Wondrous Light. Third is the duration, eighty minor eons. Fourth is the assembly transformed, including the eight princes and eight hundred disciples. Fifth is the identification of persons past and present: Seeker of Fame is Maitreya, and Wondrous Light is Mañjuśrī Wondrous Virtue.

The people transformed form two groups. First, the eight princes had completed their practice long before and became buddhas in the distant past. Second, among the eight hundred disciples, Seeker of Fame cultivated for a long time but has only now reached the place of succession.

Why cite the eight princes and eight hundred disciples? At the nearer level, this resolves a doubt; at a deeper level, it covertly opens the meaning of the distant lifespan. The doubt to be resolved is that someone might consider Maitreya, a bodhisattva in the place of succession, to have the higher rank, and Mañjuśrī, who is not in that place, the lower. The lesser person should not answer and the greater should not ask. Yet Maitreya was formerly among the eight hundred disciples. According to his identity at that time, it was entirely fitting for him to question Wondrous Light. Wondrous Light had directly received the buddha's address and had earlier been Maitreya's teacher, so there is no fault in his answering.

Covertly opening the lifespan means that the youngest of the eight princes later became Dīpaṃkara Buddha, also called Fixed Light. Wondrous Light, meanwhile, became a patriarch nine generations before Śākyamuni Buddha. A Dharma descendant of later generations has now become a buddha, while former teachers and patriarchs return to manifest as his disciples. The identities of teacher and disciple plainly have no fixed sequence. This begins to intimate birth that is not real birth and extinction that is not real extinction.

Someone asks: Maitreya encountered many buddhas in the past and had already heard the Lotus Sutra. Why does he now doubt and ask?

The answer is that the capacities of the present assembly and the needs of transformation require him to ask and thereby knock open the Dharma meaning that follows.

X. Clear Judgment and the Forty-Five Lines of Verse

The fourth answer begins with “The portents now seen” and is called the answer through clear judgment. Since the six portents of today are the same as those of the past, the preceding reflection and estimation can be confirmed as correct. What was cited in the brief and extensive accounts is likewise confirmed.

“He will teach a Mahāyāna scripture” decides the meaning of the preceding portent of teaching. “Named the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma” decides the meaning of the preceding portent of raining flowers. “A Dharma for teaching bodhisattvas” decides the meaning of the assembly's preceding joy. “Kept in mind by the buddhas” decides the meaning of the preceding earth movement. These statements also generally include entering samādhi, because all the portents occur within concentration.

One interpretation establishes correspondence between the “formerly” and the “already,” and between the “formerly” and what “will be,” but does not establish correspondence between the “formerly” and the “now.” Yet the scripture expressly says that the portents now seen do not differ from the original portents of the past. This is speaking precisely of today. How can the six portents be called something already past? According to this passage, they must be classified as “now,” so the explanation must establish three correspondences: formerly with already, now, and what will be.

There are forty-five lines of verse. They do not recite again the reflective answer or the brief account of what was formerly seen. Within the extensive account, they repeat only its first and last divisions, not the intervening twenty thousand buddhas.

The first two lines recite sameness in the time, name, teaching, and other aspects of the extensive account. The second major section, beginning “Before the Buddha left home,” has thirty-nine lines and repeats the last buddha's three correspondences. A further four lines repeat the answer through clear judgment. The thirty-nine lines likewise form three sections: one line repeats correspondence between the “formerly” and the “already”; fifteen and a half lines repeat correspondence between the “formerly” and the “now”; and twenty-two and a half lines repeat correspondence between the “formerly” and what “will be.” Two plus thirty-nine plus four makes forty-five. Within the thirty-nine, one plus fifteen and a half plus twenty-two and a half likewise agrees exactly.

The fifteen and a half lines on correspondence between the “formerly” and the “now” have two sections. First, fourteen lines recite the six portents in this and other lands. Second, the one and a half lines beginning with the appearance of the fourfold assembly recite its doubt. The first fourteen lines are again divided in two. Four lines first recite the six portents in this land, adding to the prose the spontaneous sounding of a celestial drum. The celestial drum indicates that no one needs to ask: the Buddha will teach on his own. “Manifesting many rare events” then summarizes all the portents. Ten lines next recite the six portents in other lands. The prose merely says that they were just like the buddha lands seen now and is very brief; the verse gives the extensive account here.

The ten lines on other lands have five items. First, three lines recite the corresponding sight of living beings in the six destinations. Second, the line and two phrases beginning “Again he saw the tathāgatas” recite seeing buddhas. Third, the two phrases beginning “The World-Honored One amid the great assembly” recite hearing the buddhas teach the sudden Dharma with its seven excellences. Fourth, the three lines beginning “In each buddha land, the śrāvaka assembly” recite seeing the three vehicles of śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and bodhisattvas—that is, the former buddha's corresponding unfolding of the gradual Dharma. Fifth, the two lines beginning “Again he saw bodhisattvas” recite seeing bodhisattvas practice through many causes and conditions—that is, the corresponding unfolding of the Vaipulya and Prajñā teachings.

XI. Spontaneously Accomplishing the Path, the Three Bodies, and the Three Vehicles in the Verse

The first item of three lines is clear from the scripture. The second item, the line and a half about seeing buddhas, requires an explanation of “spontaneously accomplishing the Buddha path.” On the preparatory path, one must still apply effort and deliberately cultivate. Once the true path arises, one can spontaneously and naturally accord with principle. This meaning can be understood through each of the four teachings. 〔And so forth: the remainder is abbreviated.〕

Someone asks: if one can proceed spontaneously after realizing the true stage, why is it still necessary for buddhas to teach the Dharma?

The answer is that a boat already traveling with the current will reach its destination even faster if it encounters a following wind and its oars are also used. The following wind symbolizes seeing a buddha and hearing the Dharma; the oars symbolize one's own cultivation. Again, a noble one at the first fruit may naturally pass through seven rounds of birth and death. If that person encounters a buddha appearing in the world and adds further cultivation, they may reach the stage beyond training after only one or two lives. 〔And so forth: the remainder is abbreviated.〕

In the verse, “spontaneously accomplishing the Buddha path” represents the recompense body. Lapis lazuli represents the original purity of the Dharma body, and the golden image represents the form manifested by the responsive body in accord with the capacities of living beings. The order of the three cannot be reversed.

The third item, beginning when the World-Honored One expounds profound Dharma meaning amid the great assembly, occupies only half a line. Here the recipients are inferred from the Dharma taught. Since that Dharma is deep and wondrous, it must carry those with Mahāyāna capacities and unfold the sudden Dharma. This recites the seven excellences described above, including purity and freedom from admixture.

The fourth item, beginning “In each buddha land, the śrāvaka assembly,” has three lines. Here the Dharma taught is inferred from its recipients. Since the people seen are of the two vehicles, one knows that the Buddha must have unfolded the Tripiṭaka teaching. This recites the preceding teaching of the corresponding Four Truths and other Dharmas for those seeking to become śrāvakas. Although the verse does not separately mention pratyekabuddhas, they are included in its meaning. In the words “giving, patience, and so forth,” “and so forth” includes the other four perfections; this line recites the preceding Mahāyāna of the six perfections.

The fifth item, the two lines beginning “Again he saw bodhisattvas deeply enter many forms of meditation,” recites the appearance of faith and understanding manifested by bodhisattvas in other lands as they practice through many causes and conditions. The question about stūpas seen earlier is not answered yet. In the preceding light, Maitreya did not see an assembly in another land where the Lotus was taught. The next passage must first supply the Lotus assembly; extinction and the raising of stūpas occur afterward, so they are left for the later answer.

The line and a half beginning with the fourfold assembly next supplies a recitation of the doubt that arose among the fourfold assembly in the former buddha's time. The twenty-two and a half lines beginning “The honored one served by devas and humans” recite correspondence between what was formerly seen and what is now and will be, again in six divisions.

First, two lines and two phrases recite correspondence in the person addressed. Second, the one phrase beginning “He taught this Dharma” recites correspondence in the teaching. Third, the line and one phrase beginning “For a full sixty minor eons” recite correspondence in duration, showing the inconceivable wisdom that can make long eons seem short. Wondrous Light receives and preserves all the former buddha teaches, just as Śāriputra receives the present Buddha's entrustment.

Fourth, the five lines beginning “When the Buddha had taught this Lotus Sutra” recite correspondence in the announcement of extinction and also answer the earlier question about buddhas in other lands entering extinction. The passage includes both the announcement and entrustment. Its entrustment is like that in the Sutra of the Bequeathed Teaching, its lamentation like that in the Nirvāṇa Sutra, and its consolation also like that in the Sutra of the Bequeathed Teaching. Those who should be liberated have all been liberated; those not yet liberated have also planted the causes and conditions for future liberation, just as the present Buddha will entrust living beings to Maitreya. 〔And so forth: the remainder is abbreviated.〕

Fifth, the line and a half beginning with the bodhisattva Virtue Treasury recite prediction. Sixth, the twelve lines beginning “The Buddha entered extinction that night” recite transmission of the scripture after extinction.

The twelve lines on transmission have five items. First, two lines recite the time after the Buddha's extinction and the benefit gained by the fourfold assembly. “Like fuel exhausted and fire extinguished” has two explanations. According to the lesser vehicle, the Buddha's recompense body is like fuel and wisdom like fire. Wisdom abides in dependence upon that body; when the body becomes extinct, wisdom likewise ceases to appear. According to the great vehicle, living beings' capacities to receive transformation are like fuel, while the responsive body manifested by the Buddha in accord with those capacities is like fire. When living beings' capacities are exhausted, the form manifested in response likewise becomes extinct. “Become still more diligent” means that those who should be liberated through a manifestation of extinction are transformed by that very appearance.

Second, the two phrases beginning with Wondrous Light recite the person able to propagate the scripture. Third, the two phrases beginning “For eighty minor eons” recite the duration of its propagation. Fourth, the eight lines beginning with the eight princes recite the disciples benefited through that propagation. These form two levels. The first three lines recite disciples who had accomplished the path long before and became buddhas. The five lines beginning again with Wondrous Light recite disciples such as Seeker of Fame who accomplished it only later. Fifth, the one line beginning “After that buddha entered extinction” recites the identification of persons of the past with persons of the present.

XII. The Final Four Verses End Four Implied Doubts

Earlier masters say that the final four verses merely summarize what precedes and make living beings aspire and look upward. Master Zhiyi holds that they do more. Since the preceding prose contains a clear judgment, these four verses recite that judgment again. Their wording can be divided into three sections: the first verse of one line recites that the Buddha will teach a Mahāyāna scripture; the middle two verses of two lines recite that it is a Dharma for teaching bodhisattvas; and the final verse of one line recites that it is kept in mind by the buddhas.

In addition, Maitreya earlier posed four implied challenges that made it necessary for Mañjuśrī to answer. Here Mañjuśrī removes four implied doubts so that Maitreya need not ask again. The former set of challenges gives rise to the answer; the latter set of doubts is ended by it. Their directions are different.

The first doubt is this: although Mañjuśrī has extensively cited a former buddha who taught the Lotus Sutra, Maitreya might still wonder whether the present Buddha must do the same. Buddhas appear in accord with the causes and conditions of living beings; the persons they address and the times in which they appear are not alike. Why must the present Buddha teach a scripture called the Lotus simply because an ancient buddha did?

Mañjuśrī ends this doubt with the first verse. He saw that the light-portent of Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance Buddha in the past was just like this, and therefore knows that the present Buddha will teach the Lotus Sutra. This answers the doubt about the scripture's name.

The second doubt is this: sometimes the same name has the same meaning, while at other times the same name bears a different meaning. What does the present name actually disclose and designate?

Mañjuśrī ends this doubt with the second verse. The present portents are like the original portents of the past; this is a skillful means of the buddhas. The present Buddha emits light to assist in revealing the meaning of the true mark. This answers the doubt about the scripture's substance.

The third doubt is this: the true mark is originally without marks, so who can understand it?

Mañjuśrī ends this doubt with the third verse. The assembly should now understand, join palms, and wait single-mindedly. The Buddha will rain the Dharma rain and fully satisfy all seekers of the path. This answers the doubt about the assembly that receives the teaching and its tenet.

The fourth doubt is this: does the Dharma rain sent down by the Buddha moisten only bodhisattvas, or does it also moisten the two vehicles of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas?

Mañjuśrī ends this doubt with the fourth verse. If any who seek the three vehicles still harbor doubt or regret, the Buddha will remove it for them so completely that not a trace remains. This answers the doubt about the Dharma's function.

Maitreya forms one doubt after another, and Mañjuśrī removes each in turn. The events have been fully explained, the principles have become clear, and every answer can be understood in the mind. This may be called skill in asking and skill in answering, with both question and answer jointly accomplishing an adornment.

Guangzhai knows only how to transmit Master Zhao's explanation of the four implied challenges, which require Mañjuśrī to answer and thereby display Maitreya's excellence in questioning. He does not see that Mañjuśrī also removes four implied doubts so that Maitreya need not ask again. He thus diminishes Wondrous Virtue Mañjuśrī's excellence in answering. This meaning is Tiantai's own judgment and was not transmitted from another ancient commentary. Let later worthies not suppress another person's excellence.

For several hundred years after Master Zhao, people who lectured on the Lotus Sutra filled the roads. The transmitted wording of the final sentence is difficult. In light of what precedes and follows, it may provisionally be read: “Has anyone seen this purport? If one will not acknowledge that this too is another's excellence, what else can be said?” 〔That is to say: this is what it means.〕

義疏Exposition

Maitreya has already seen the Buddha emit light, and Mañjuśrī has personally witnessed buddhas of the past manifest the same portents. With clues this clear, why does Mañjuśrī not declare in his first sentence that the Buddha will teach the Lotus? Why does he first reflect, then cite what he saw briefly and at length, and only at the end deliver a clear judgment?

This passage must do more than supply an answer. It must enable the assembly to complete a path on which it can receive that answer. When someone at a lower stage estimates the intent of a sage above, a dim likeness cannot immediately be presented as certainty. The past may first be compared with the present; one event may then be expanded into many; resemblance may be tested until it becomes identity; and only then may judgment become settled. Mañjuśrī does not move from not knowing to knowing. He arranges what he knows into a form the assembly can receive step by step.

I. The Four Answers Are Not Four Conclusions, but One Image Developing

Reflection, the brief account of what was formerly seen, the extensive account of what was formerly seen, and clear judgment appear as four sections. In fact, they resemble a single image gradually coming into view.

Reflection first measures today's portents against events of the past. It answers the question about this land without yet stating the conclusion in full. The brief account next cites something Mañjuśrī himself saw in the past. Through the single portent of emitted light, it reaches the lands to the east and adds personal witness to the preceding estimate. The extensive account then unfolds one buddha, twenty thousand buddhas, and the last buddha in succession. The six portents in this land and in other lands, the teaching of the Dharma, extinction, prediction, and transmission all gradually take their places. By the time of clear judgment, the present portents can be matched one by one with those of the past, and the answer becomes a decision rather than an estimate.

The four answers therefore do not repeat the same statement four times. The first gives a direction; the second supplies one witnessed basis; the third turns that basis into a complete structure; and the fourth explicitly delivers the conclusion. It is like discerning something at a distance: first one sees its outline, then one part, then its whole form, and only afterward can one determine what it is.

This sequence also resolves a likely misunderstanding. Mañjuśrī is an ancient buddha, so his reflection does not mean that he truly does not know. He manifests deliberation within the present assembly so that his answer will accord with the sequence in which the assembly can receive it. If a sage were simply to state the endpoint at once, people might remember the conclusion but never see how it arises from the portents.

II. How Can Five Statements Answer Six Portents?

The reflective answer responds to the portents with five statements: wishing to teach the great Dharma corresponds to teaching; raining the great Dharma rain to raining flowers; blowing the great Dharma conch to the assembly's joy; beating the great Dharma drum to the earth's movement; and expounding the meaning of the great Dharma to the Buddha's emission of light. Yet there are six portents in this land. How can five statements leave nothing out?

What is absent as a separate phrase is entering samādhi; what is not absent in function is also entering samādhi. The rain of flowers, the movement of the earth, and the emission of light all occur while the Buddha is in samādhi. Although the five statements do not establish a separate sentence for concentration, the whole group of portents already depends upon it. This brevity is not an omission. The portent not separately named is jointly disclosed by the setting in which the other portents occur.

The first statement, the great Dharma, is general; the following four—rain, conch, drum, and meaning—are particular. The great Dharma itself is like the sky and cannot directly be called large or small, red or white, although flowers that descend from the sky possess size and color. The meaning of ultimate truth likewise cannot simply be equated with opening, revealing, awakening to, and entering, although beings realize this principle through the stages of abodes, practices, dedications, and grounds.

The Dharma rain makes a seed germinate. The seed of Dharma-nature is innately present, but the husk of ignorance covers it. Rain does not manufacture another seed from outside; it moistens what is already there, breaks the husk, and lets the sprout emerge. The sound of the conch announces that a designation is about to change, showing that what has already been attained must not remain in its former place. The drum warns and urges an army onward, showing that practitioners must not cling to what they have gained and refuse to advance. Expounding spreads broadly across and penetrates deeply downward until both breadth and depth are complete.

Rain, conch, drum, and light are therefore not four wonders offered for spectatorship. Rain turns dryness into moisture; the conch changes an old designation into a new one; the drum transforms remaining at rest into advancing; and light illumines this land and other lands within one scene. The portents deserve inquiry not merely because they are rare, but because they already disclose the operation of the Dharma about to be taught.

III. One Beam of Light Opens Two Axes

Through the Buddha's light, Maitreya horizontally sees eighteen thousand lands to the east. What he sees is spatial: beings in the six destinations, buddhas teaching, practitioners of the three vehicles, nirvāṇa, and the raising of stūpas appear side by side within the light. Mañjuśrī answers instead through what he saw in the past. What he cites is temporal: before the present day, other buddhas manifested the same portents and taught the same great Dharma.

One beam of light thus opens two axes. Horizontally, this land and other lands illumine one another; vertically, the present and the past verify one another. The brief account first seizes upon emitted light because light alone reaches from this land into others. The extensive account then joins what was seen horizontally to events in the vertical depth of the past. The assembly can thereby understand that the present scene is not an isolated wonder, but another manifestation of the common path of all buddhas.

This also explains why the brief account can contain profound meaning even though it says only that beings are to hear and know. Hearing and knowing may be opened into the wisdoms of hearing and reflection; they may also be opened into practice through faith and practice through the Dharma. One pair describes how understanding forms, while the other describes how people act in reliance upon what they hear. The illumination of other lands is only the outward sight. What must truly occur is that living beings proceed from hearing to understanding and from faithful reception to practice in accordance with the Dharma.

Horizontal and vertical do not form a rigid grid in this passage. Within reflection, general and particular can also be described as horizontal and vertical; the breadth and depth of stages can likewise be described in those terms. The important matter is not to memorize which side must always be horizontal and which vertical, but to ask what two terms are being compared in each place. Once the endpoints of the comparison are lost, repetition of the two labels makes the reading less, not more, directed.

IV. Why Are One Buddha, Twenty Thousand Buddhas, and the Last Buddha Not Each Recounted in Full?

The extensive account first cites one buddha, then twenty thousand buddhas, and then the last buddha. The first is described through the time, the name, and teachings both sudden and gradual. The twenty thousand are mentioned only in connection with the sudden teaching. The last is emphasized through gradual teaching, portents, the Lotus, the announcement of extinction, prediction, and transmission after extinction. None of the three passages alone contains everything.

This arrangement is not incomplete evidence but mutual indication. What has already been said of the first buddha need not be repeated item by item for the twenty thousand. What the twenty thousand disclose in common need not be listed again from the beginning for the last. The reader must superimpose the three passages to see the same name, Dharma, portents, and sequence of transformation.

Sameness also does not mean literal equality. Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance and the present Buddha bear different names, yet can be said to share the same meaning through concentration, wisdom, one's own practice, and the transformation of others. The former buddha has eight sons and the present Buddha has one. Their numbers differ, yet each manifests having a son. One son generally represents the one pure path, while eight sons represent the Eightfold Path. The passage draws upon their shared fact of sonship and the purity they signify without forcing one to become eight.

Time works in the same way. What was experienced in the distant past is “formerly”; what has recently passed is “already”; the present six portents are “now”; and what occurs after the Buddha emerges from samādhi is “will be.” These four expressions are not casual substitutes for ordinary words of time. They view one buddha-event from different distances. Some events completed in the past have already occurred today, some are occurring now, and others remain to occur. Sameness is established level by level through these differences.

This method of mutual indication also keeps interpretation from rewriting scripture. In the account of the past buddha, only the manifestation of portents and the arising of doubt are explicitly stated among the five divisions of the specific introduction. The gathering of the assembly, question, and answer can be inferred: if there was teaching, an assembly must have gathered; if there was doubt, a question should have arisen; and if there was a question, there should have been an answer. To know by implication that they existed does not authorize one to compose three passages the root scripture never transmitted. Preserving their presence in meaning while respecting their absence in wording keeps explanation from becoming invention.

V. Who First Faces the Buddha after He Emerges from Samādhi?

The last buddha's correspondence with what will occur has six aspects: the person addressed, the teaching's name, its duration, the announcement of extinction, bestowal of a prediction, and transmission of the scripture after extinction. The person addressed comes first because, when the Buddha emerges from concentration, someone must first receive the main teaching.

The buddha of the past speaks to Wondrous Light; the present Buddha speaks to Śāriputra. One interpretation treats Wondrous Light only as the person later entrusted to propagate the scripture, and another reaches far ahead to Medicine King as the corresponding person in the present. The treatise instead holds closely to the person to whom the Buddha is speaking when he first emerges from samādhi. Wondrous Light later transmits the scripture, and Śāriputra later receives an entrustment, but these later tasks cannot erase their roles as direct addressees at the beginning of the main discourse.

The point of this distinction does not rest on the labels “bodhisattva” and “śrāvaka.” The event of the past is already fully revealed, so Wondrous Light is described as a bodhisattva. The present event has not yet been completely disclosed, so Śāriputra still appears in the form of a śrāvaka. If one grasps only their immediate labels, their different names will obscure their shared function. If one recognizes that manifestation can remain concealed in one case and be revealed in another, one can see that both receive the main teaching when the Buddha emerges from samādhi.

The addressee also joins a teaching's present to its future. Direct address gives the Dharma a recipient now; entrustment gives it a transmitter after the Buddha's extinction. Wondrous Light both hears and propagates, while Śāriputra is both addressed and entrusted. Main teaching and transmission are not unrelated lines. They continue before and after in a person capable of hearing, preserving, and communicating the Dharma.

VI. A Long Time Felt as Short Does Not End the Need for Practice

The buddha of the past teaches for sixty minor eons, while the hearers experience the interval as the time of a single meal. Elsewhere, fifty minor eons are experienced by the assembly as half a day. Sixty is not fifty, and the time of a meal is not half a day. The passage does not erase the numerical difference; it draws only upon their common function, in which a long duration can be received as short.

In the same way, naturally proceeding along the true path does not mean that one no longer needs the Buddha's teaching or one's own additional effort after seeing the path. A boat already following the current may still receive the wind, and even with the wind it may still use its oars. The current represents the momentum of the path already established; the wind represents seeing the Buddha and hearing the Dharma; the oars represent one's own cultivation. These do not exclude one another. Together they bring more swiftly to its destination a boat that was already able to arrive.

The image of the boat holds spontaneity and diligence together. Spontaneity is not the absence of causal practice, and diligence is not wholly forced exertion. Once one's direction accords with principle, the Buddha's teaching and the practitioner's effort become supporting conditions. To throw away the oars on that account is precisely to misunderstand following the current.

The fire simile of extinction also has two levels. On one reading, the recompense body is like fuel and wisdom like fire; once the fuel is exhausted, the fire no longer appears. On another, the capacities of living beings are like fuel and the Buddha's responsive manifestations like fire; when the capacities able to receive transformation are exhausted, the manifested form also becomes hidden. The second level turns attention from the Buddha's body to living beings. Extinction asks not only where the Buddha has gone, but whether conditions still require that this responsive body continue to appear.

Prediction, entrustment, and transmission therefore still follow the announcement of extinction. The Buddha body's manifested extinction does not mean that the Dharma's activity is simultaneously severed. Wondrous Light teaches the scripture for eighty minor eons; the eight princes become buddhas in succession; and Seeker of Fame later becomes Maitreya. All show the stream of Dharma continuing through teachers and disciples. A teacher can manifest as a disciple, and a disciple of a later age can become a buddha. Once fixed identities loosen, the outward forms of birth and extinction cannot exhaust a person's distant course of practice.

VII. The Last Four Verses Close Doubts, Not a Dharma Gate

The prose answer is already clear. Why, then, are there four final verses? Clear judgment must not only be recited again; it must also close, one by one, four questions that might still arise.

The first doubt concerns the name: even if the ancient buddha taught the Lotus, why must the present Buddha teach a scripture of the same name? The first verse takes the sameness of past and present light-portents as the basis for judging that the present Buddha will also teach the Lotus. The second concerns substance: even if the name is the same, might its referent differ? The second verse says that the present light assists in revealing the meaning of the true mark. The sameness of the portent thus further discloses sameness in the substance taught.

The third doubt concerns the tenet: since the true mark is without marks, who can receive it? The third verse does not invent an abstract class of hearers, but returns to the seekers of the path now waiting single-mindedly with palms joined. The fourth concerns function: will the Dharma rain moisten bodhisattvas alone and not śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas? The fourth verse expressly says that the Buddha will completely remove the doubts and regrets of all seekers in the three vehicles.

The four verses therefore successively end doubts about name, substance, tenet, and function. The questioner raises questions in sequence and the respondent repeatedly cuts them off. Only after both the events and the principle they reveal have been explained does the exchange reach a point at which nothing further need be asked. Reflection at the beginning and freedom from further doubt at the end answer one another across the passage. The movement is not from ignorance to information, but from a pedagogical starting point at which judgment must not be rushed to an ending in which every necessary doubt has received its place.

This is the passage's deepest adornment of question and answer. A good question does not prolong uncertainty indefinitely, and a good answer does not suppress uncertainty by authority. A good question requires the answer to unfold; a good answer brings the question to a genuine end. The portents thereby cease to be an outward spectacle and become the complete path on which the assembly sees, doubts, asks, receives an answer, and finally waits for the Buddha to teach the great Dharma.

Through the Eye of the Wenjuji

Zhanran first divides the entire passage into four steps: opening the divisions, giving rise to them, explaining the reason for reflection, and extensive explanation. These are the procedures by which the commentary reads the answer; they do not replace the root treatise's four answers with a different set of four. He further says that, since five statements correspond to six portents, the five statements are precisely an estimate of all six. Although entering samādhi has no sentence of its own, it remains present through the portents manifested in concentration. The reduction of words and the inclusion of meaning are thereby preserved together.

Concerning reflection, Zhanran especially identifies it as the basis of the brief and extensive accounts of what was formerly seen and as the structural skeleton of the whole sutra. The first statement, the great Dharma, is general, while the following four are particular. The great Dharma represents disclosure in this land, and Dharma meaning represents the common path of this and other lands; the two phrases must not be collapsed into synonyms. Zhanran also subsumes the treatise's eight statements within the scripture's five, explaining that continuity, the Dharma banner, and the Dharma torch are all included in the Dharma drum through continuation of its substance, its function as a standard, and its breaking of darkness. This is an expansion in the mirror text and cannot be rewritten as though the root treatise itself listed all eight.

For the brief and extensive accounts, Zhanran makes the two axes more explicit. The brief account uses emitted light to include everything seen in other lands. The extensive account regards this land and other lands in relation as horizontal, and the present and the past in relation as vertical. The first buddha, the twenty thousand buddhas, and the last buddha mutually omit details in order to avoid tedious repetition. An item abbreviated in one passage does not therefore cease to belong to it.

Zhanran divides “hear and know” in one direction into the wisdoms of hearing and reflection and in another into practice through faith and practice through the Dharma. The first pair explains how understanding forms from hearing; the second how recipients rely either on faith or on the Dharma in practice. The two pairs are not a four-stage ladder, nor may a third wisdom absent from the root statement be added merely because later doctrine supplies a connected sequence. By calling this Dharma difficult for all worlds to believe, he further shows that its difficulty lies not only in the profundity of its language, but in living beings' long attachment to what they previously gained and their difficulty in turning beyond it.

Concerning the six correspondences of the last buddha, Zhanran again fixes Wondrous Light as the direct addressee of the teaching when the buddha emerges from samādhi, not merely as its later transmitter. He also expressly says that sixty and fifty, and the time of a meal and half a day, differ slightly in number and correspond only in the way the long can be experienced as short. When only two of the five divisions of the past specific introduction are manifest and three are hidden, the narrative is concealing the past to disclose the present, not preserving three lost passages of the root scripture.

The mirror text does not treat Maitreya's question, despite his having heard the Dharma before, as actual forgetfulness. He manifests doubt in accord with the capacities and needs of the assembly. The sequence among Wondrous Light, the eight princes, Dīpaṃkara, and the present Buddha is read as a latent indication that the identities of teacher and disciple can change in response to transformation. This inference can illuminate the root treatise's statement that teacher and disciple are not fixed; it cannot be rewritten as explicit wording of the root scripture.

Clear judgment is read in the mirror as proceeding from subtle to manifest. The subtlety of reflection does not mean that Mañjuśrī's real wisdom is doubtful, and the manifest quality of judgment does not mean that he discovers the answer only at the end. The verse does not repeat the first two answers because the extensive account and clear judgment already contain their framework. The final four verses both repeat the judgment and end the four doubts about name, substance, tenet, and function. Zhanran closes with the union of event and principle and asks what doubt could remain, completing the movement from gradual disclosure at the opening to freedom from doubt at the end.

In the verses concerning the six portents in this and other lands, Zhanran distinguishes teaching, entering samādhi, raining flowers, the assembly's joy, the earth's movement, and the emission of light without allowing one portent to be confused with another. In the allocation of lines to the three vehicles and the six perfections, he preserves doubts in the transmitted wording without using uncertainty as permission to alter the text. He also reads the supplementary verse as subsequently reciting the doubt of the fourfold assembly. Although the verse follows the prose, its function remains directly joined to the former buddha's manifestation of portents and the assembly's doubt; it does not step backward to open a separate passage.

This unit continues from Maitreya's question and fully explains Mañjuśrī's answer in prose and verse. Zhiyi first classifies the prose into four answers—reflection and estimation, the brief account of what was formerly seen, the extensive account of what was formerly seen, and clear judgment. He then uses the axes of present and past, this and other lands, and formerly, already, now, and what will be to explain how Mañjuśrī proceeds from estimation to explicit judgment. Finally, he interprets the last four verses of the Introduction chapter through four implied doubts.

Doctrinal-Outline Placement

The strict domain is T34n1718〔0032c11–0036a25〕, containing 4,898 Han characters. Its opening is marked by 「從」 tr. “from” and the attached scriptural wording 「是時文殊師利語彌勒」 tr. “At that time Mañjuśrī spoke to Maitreya”〔0032c11〕, immediately classifying the passage as the answer section of the specific introduction and including both prose and verse. The final continuous wording that can be attached to this domain is 「《法華》者溢路,頗有見斯意不非長何〔謂也〕?」 tr. “Those who lecture on the Lotus fill the roads. Has anyone seen this purport? If this is not another's excellence, what can be said [that is to say]?”〔0036a25〕. The words 〔謂也〕 form a transmitted inline annotation and are not leveled into the surrounding body as continuous text. The next line, 「釋方便品」 tr. “Explanation of the Skillful Means chapter”〔0036a26〕, already belongs to the explanation of another chapter.

This unit occupies the answer portion of the specific introduction in the Introduction chapter of the Trace Gate. Its internal structure is:

No.Line domainContent of the root treatise
10032c11–0032c21General divisions and derivation of the answer: four answers through reflection and estimation, the brief and extensive accounts of what was formerly seen, and clear judgment; proceeding from a dim likeness, through brief and extensive seeing, to explicit determination
20032c22–0033a07Heading of reflection and estimation and Guangzhai's ancient interpretation; Zhiyi does not use the direct-teaching interpretation that prematurely places the Origin Gate here
30033a07–0033b01Five statements matched to the five portents of teaching, raining flowers, the assembly's joy, earth movement, and emitted light; entering samādhi included through the other portents
40033b01–0033b15The first statement as general and the following four as particular; horizontal and vertical explanations through abodes, practices, dedications, and grounds, and through opening, revealing, awakening to, and entering
50033b16–0033b23Brief answer through what was formerly seen: emitted light generally includes what was seen in other lands; hearing and knowing are explained through two wisdoms and two modes of practice
60033b24–0034a09First buddha of the extensive answer: time, name, seven excellences, three-vehicle teaching, and all-mode wisdom
70034a10–0034a16Twenty thousand buddhas: the same name, surname, and teaching, with ancient translations of Poluoduo
80034a16–0034b10The last buddha's correspondences between formerly and already and between formerly and now: eight sons and one son, the six portents in this and other lands, and the manifest or implied status of the five divisions of the specific introduction
90034b10–0034c08The person occasioning correspondence between formerly and what will be: Wondrous Light and Śāriputra as direct addressees of the main teaching after the buddha emerges from samādhi, together with the ancient interpretations of Master Yao and Medicine King
100034c09–0034c25Four correspondences in the teaching's name, duration, announcement of extinction, and prediction
110034c25–0035a09Five aspects of transmission after extinction and the succession among Wondrous Light, the eight princes, and Seeker of Fame
120035a10–0035a18Answer through clear judgment: four phrases judge teaching, raining flowers, the assembly's joy, and earth movement; entering samādhi is included generally
130035a18–0035c02General division of the forty-five lines of verse; the six portents in this and other lands and the doubt of the fourfold assembly
140035c02–0035c24Six divisions in the verse concerning correspondence between formerly and what will be
150035c25–0036a25The final four verses recite clear judgment and end four implied doubts about name, substance, tenet, and function

The corresponding domain in Zhanran's Fahua Wenjuji begins with 「答問為四:初開章,次生起,三「惟忖」下所以,四廣解。」 tr. “The answer to the question has four parts: first opening the divisions, next deriving them, third explaining the reason in the passage below ‘reflection and estimation,’ and fourth extensive explanation”〔T34n1719 0203a21〕. Its direct explanation continues through 「事理合一,何所復疑?」 tr. “Event and principle unite as one; what doubt could remain?”〔0209b17〕 and the final character 「疑?」 tr. “doubt?”〔0209b18〕. Line 〔0209b19〕 closes the fascicle, while 〔0209b25〕 separately opens the Skillful Means chapter. The four answers, the verses, and the last four doubts all receive continuous mirror explanation; no top-level division is left blank.

Formation and Transmission

The fascicle opening of the present work already distinguishes the layers of formation: the doctrinal exposition belongs to Zhiyi, the wording was privately recorded by Guanding, and the transmitted sequence was later ordered by Master Lang in the wuxu year of the Tianbao era. The half-fascicle containing this unit still bears the single attribution to Zhiyi. Guanding's private record and the Tianbao editorial ordering belong to the transmission of the whole work and do not change the speaker of this passage.

The passage itself also preserves traces of textual transmission: twenty-five sets of edition variants, seven transmitted inline annotations, and five occurrences of the graph . These materials suffice to show that the received wording has ascertainable variants, but they do not suffice to reconstruct an order prior to Master Lang's editorial work. The body therefore follows the Taishō base text, while variant readings are recorded set by set without adjudicating one as superior.

“expounding the meaning of the great Dharma”〔0033a11〕「演大法義」 tr. “expounding the meaning of the great Dharma”〔0003c13〕The root treatise takes this as the answer to the portent of emitted light
“from the passage below ‘In the past I’”〔0033b16〕「諸善男子! tr. “Good sons! Among buddhas of the past I formerly saw this portent: after emitting this light, they immediately taught the great Dharma”〔0003c14〕The root treatise abbreviates the attachment; the present scripture separately has “Good sons” before the subject
“wishing to enable living beings all to hear and know”〔0033b20〕「欲令眾生,咸得聞知一切世間難信之法,故現斯瑞。」 tr. “Wishing to enable living beings all to hear and know the Dharma difficult for all worlds to believe, they therefore manifested this portent”〔0003c16〕The root treatise opens hearing and knowing into the wisdoms of hearing and reflection and into practice through faith and practice through the Dharma

3. The Extensive Account: The First Single Buddha

Node explained by the root treatiseExact wording in the present T09n0262Cross-reading
Time in the past〔T34n1718 0033b29〕「如過去無量無邊不可思議阿僧祇劫」 tr. “In the past, immeasurable, boundless, inconceivable asaṃkhya eons ago—”〔0003c17〕The root treatise answers Maitreya's horizontal vision through a vertical vision of the past
Buddha's name and ten epithets〔0033c01〕「爾時有佛,號日月燈明如來、應供、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊」 tr. “At that time there was a buddha named Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance, Tathāgata, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Universally Awakened, Perfect in Knowledge and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Trainer of Persons, Teacher of Devas and Humans, Buddha, World-Honored One”〔0003c18〕The root treatise judges that the common epithets may be the same while the individual name differs in wording but is the same in meaning
General statement of the seven excellences〔0033c07–0033c18〕「演說正法,初善中善後善,其義深遠,其語巧妙,純一無雜,具足清白梵行之相。」 tr. “He expounded the right Dharma, good at the beginning, good in the middle, and good at the end; its meaning was deep and far-reaching, its words skillful and subtle, pure and unmixed, complete in the mark of pure-white brahma conduct”〔0003c20〕The root treatise successively distinguishes excellence in time, meaning, language, uniqueness, completeness, pliancy or practice, and loving-kindness
Śrāvakas〔0033c27〕「為求聲聞者說應四諦法,度生老病死,究竟涅槃」 tr. “For those seeking to become śrāvakas, he taught the corresponding Dharma of the Four Truths, ferrying them across birth, aging, illness, and death to ultimate nirvāṇa”〔0003c22〕This answers Maitreya's question about those who encounter suffering and become disenchanted with aging, illness, and death
Pratyekabuddhas〔0034a01〕「為求辟支佛者說應十二因緣法」 tr. “For those seeking to become pratyekabuddhas, he taught the corresponding Dharma of the twelve links of dependent origination”〔0003c23〕This answers the question about those possessing merit from worshiping buddhas and aspiring to a superior Dharma
Bodhisattvas〔0034a02〕「為諸菩薩說應六波羅蜜」 tr. “For the bodhisattvas he taught the corresponding six perfections”〔0003c24〕This answers the question about those cultivating manifold practices and seeking unsurpassed wisdom
All-mode wisdom〔0034a05〕「令得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,成一切種智。」 tr. “Enabling them to attain unsurpassed complete awakening and accomplish all-mode wisdom”〔0003c25〕The root treatise condenses this as 「令得三菩提成一切種智」 tr. “enabling them to attain complete awakening and accomplish all-mode wisdom”〔T34n1718 0034a05〕 without retroactively altering the root scripture
tr. “Again, buddhas entering parinirvāṇa are seen; and again, after buddhas enter parinirvāṇa, seven-jeweled stūpas are raised for their relics”〔0002b23〕The root treatise answers the preceding question by taking the revelation of the real from beginning to end as ultimate

4. The Twenty Thousand Buddhas and the Last Buddha

Node explained by the root treatiseExact wording in the present T09n0262Cross-reading
Twenty thousand with the same name and surname〔T34n1718 0034a10〕「如是二萬佛,皆同一字,號日月燈明,又同一姓,姓頗羅墮。」 tr. “These twenty thousand buddhas all had the same name, Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance, and also had the same surname, Poluoduo”〔0003c27〕The root treatise separately transmits three ancient translations of Poluoduo
Sameness in teaching among the twenty thousand〔0034a11〕「初佛後佛,皆同一字,名日月燈明,十號具足。 tr. “The first buddha and all the later buddhas had the same name, Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance, and possessed the ten epithets in full. The Dharma they taught was good at the beginning, middle, and end”〔0003c29〕The first buddha gives sudden and gradual teaching in detail, the twenty thousand mention the sudden, and the last mentions the gradual; the passages mutually disclose one another
Eight princes〔0034a22〕「其最後佛,未出家時有八王子」 tr. “Before the last buddha left home, he had eight princes”〔0004a01〕, with their eight names listed at〔0004a02–0004a04〕The root treatise compares their sameness in having sons and their sameness in meaning despite their different numbers with the present Buddha's one son
Renunciation and aspiration〔0034a27〕「悉捨王位亦隨出家,發大乘意,常修梵行,皆為法師」 tr. “They all relinquished their royal thrones, followed him in leaving home, aroused the Mahāyāna intent, constantly cultivated brahma conduct, and all became Dharma teachers”〔0004a06〕The root treatise contrasts this with the present Buddha's son still appearing under a fruition of the lesser vehicle before his origin has been revealed
tr. “He taught a Mahāyāna scripture named Immeasurable Meanings, a Dharma for teaching bodhisattvas and kept in mind by the buddhas. Having taught this scripture, he immediately sat cross-legged amid the great assembly and entered the Samādhi of the Place of Immeasurable Meanings, his body and mind unmoving”〔0004a09〕The starting point of the former buddha's introduction through manifestation of portents
tr. “The heavens rained māndārava, great māndārava, mañjūṣaka, and great mañjūṣaka flowers, scattering them over the Buddha and the entire assembly. The whole buddha world trembled in six ways”〔0004a11〕The root treatise separately matches raining and drum to the two portents
Joy of the assembly〔0034b02〕「是諸大眾,得未曾有,歡喜合掌,一心觀佛。」 tr. “This great assembly experienced what it had never had before, rejoiced, joined palms, and single-mindedly gazed at the Buddha”〔0004a16〕The root treatise matches this to blowing the great Dharma conch
Emission of light〔0034b03〕「爾時如來放眉間白毫相光,照東方萬八千佛土,靡不周遍,如今所見是諸佛土。」 tr. “At that time the Tathāgata emitted light from the mark of the white curl between his brows, illuminating eighteen thousand buddha lands in the east without exception, just like the buddha lands now seen”〔0004a18〕This also generally includes what was seen in other lands
tr. “Seeing this light universally illuminate the buddha lands, they experienced what they had never had before and wished to know the cause and condition for which the light appeared”〔0004a21〕The root treatise says that the past wording explicitly gives only manifestation of portents and doubt; the other three divisions of the specific introduction are inferred in meaning
Person occasioning the teaching and direct address〔0034b10–0034b29〕「時有菩薩,名曰妙光,有八百弟子。 “At that time there was a bodhisattva named Wondrous Light, who had eight hundred disciples. Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance Buddha then emerged from samādhi and, on account of Wondrous Light Bodhisattva, taught a Mahāyāna scripture”〔0004a22〕「因妙光菩薩、說」 tr. “on account of Wondrous Light Bodhisattva, taught”〔0004a24〕 is the direct scriptural wording on which Zhiyi bases his judgment that Wondrous Light was the addressee of the main teaching
Scripture's name〔0034c09〕「名妙法蓮華,教菩薩法,佛所護念」 tr. “Named the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma, a Dharma for teaching bodhisattvas and kept in mind by the buddhas”〔0004a24〕The same name as what the present Buddha will teach
Sixty minor eons〔0034c14〕「六十小劫不起于座。」 tr. “For sixty minor eons he did not rise from his seat”〔0004a25〕Compared with the time of a meal below
Time of a meal〔0034c14〕「聽佛所說,謂如食頃。」 tr. “Listening to what the Buddha taught, they considered it the time of a single meal”〔0004a27〕The root treatise separately cites fifty minor eons and half a day for the shared meaning of a long duration felt as short
Announcement of extinction〔0034c16〕「如來於今日中夜,當入無餘涅槃。」 tr. “At midnight today the Tathāgata will enter nirvāṇa without remainder”〔0004b01〕Correspondence in the prose announcement of extinction
Prediction bestowed upon Virtue Treasury〔0034c19〕「是德藏菩薩,次當作佛,號曰淨身多陀阿伽度、阿羅訶、三藐三佛陀。」 tr. “This bodhisattva Virtue Treasury will next become a buddha named Pure Body, Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly and Completely Awakened”〔0004b03〕Because the former event is already complete, the root treatise says first that a bodhisattva receives the prediction
tr. “After bestowing the prediction, the Buddha entered nirvāṇa without remainder at midnight. After the Buddha's extinction, Wondrous Light Bodhisattva preserved the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma and expounded it to others for a full eighty minor eons”〔0004b05〕The time, person, and duration of transmitting the scripture
Eight sons and eight hundred disciples〔0034c27〕「日月燈明佛八子皆師妙光」 tr. “The eight sons of Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance Buddha all took Wondrous Light as their teacher”〔0004b07〕; 「八百弟子中,有一人號曰求名」 tr. “Among the eight hundred disciples was one person named Seeker of Fame”〔0004b11〕The assembly transformed through transmission of the scripture
Identification of past and present〔0034c27〕「爾時妙光菩薩豈異人乎? tr. “Was Wondrous Light Bodhisattva of that time some other person? I was he. Seeker of Fame Bodhisattva was you”〔0004b15〕Mañjuśrī was formerly Wondrous Light, and Maitreya was formerly Seeker of Fame
tr. “The portents now seen do not differ from the original ones. I therefore reflect and estimate: ‘Today the Tathāgata will teach a Mahāyāna scripture named the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma, a Dharma for teaching bodhisattvas and kept in mind by the buddhas’”〔0004b16〕The four phrases separately return to teaching, raining flowers, the assembly's joy, and earth movement; entering samādhi is included generally

7. Cross-Citations within the Root Scripture

The root treatise uses 「五十小劫謂如半日」 tr. “fifty minor eons were considered half a day”〔T34n1718 0034c15〕 to explain the meaning of extending and contracting duration. The present scripture divides this between 「佛默然而坐,及諸四眾亦皆默然五十小劫」 tr. “The Buddha sat in silence, and the members of the fourfold assembly likewise remained silent for fifty minor eons”〔T09n0262 0040a20〕 and 「佛神力故,令諸大眾謂如半日。」 tr. “Through the Buddha's spiritual power, the great assembly considered it only half a day”〔0040a21〕. The root treatise condenses the two sentences. This is related to the present passage's sixty minor eons and the time of a meal only in the meaning of a long duration felt as short. Fifty and sixty, and half a day and the time of a meal, cannot be interchanged.

The root treatise also cites 「如來不久當入涅槃」 tr. “The Tathāgata will enter nirvāṇa before long”〔T34n1718 0034c18〕. The present scripture has 「如來不久當入涅槃,佛欲以此妙法華經付囑有在。」 tr. “The Tathāgata will enter nirvāṇa before long; the Buddha wishes to entrust this Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma to someone”〔T09n0262 0033c14〕. The mirror text cites it as 「如來不久當般涅槃」 tr. “The Tathāgata will enter parinirvāṇa before long”〔T34n1719 0207b28〕, adding the graph ; all three forms are recorded. The phrase naming the Buddha, 「今多寶如來塔」 tr. “Now the stūpa of Many Jewels Tathāgata” occurs at〔T09n0262 0032c19〕, while the phrase concerning the complete body, 「寶塔中坐師子座,全身不散,如入禪定」 tr. “He sits on the lion throne within the jeweled stūpa, his complete body undispersed, as though entering meditation” occurs at〔0033b29〕. They cannot be joined under one anchor.

An ancient master reaches ahead to Medicine King as the person entrusted with transmission. The scriptural scene is 「爾時世尊因藥王菩薩,告八萬大士」 tr. “At that time, on account of Medicine King Bodhisattva, the World-Honored One addressed eighty thousand great beings”〔T09n0262 0030b29〕. The root treatise separately says 「今佛子羅云亦師身子」 tr. “The present Buddha's son Rāhula likewise took Śāriputra as his teacher”〔T34n1718 0034c02〕. An ancient Vinaya biography may be cross-read at 「令羅睺羅,捨家出家。 “He caused Rāhula to leave the household and go forth, appointing Śāriputra as his preceptor”〔T03n0190 0909a24〕, while another witness has 「告舍利弗」 tr. “he said to Śāriputra”〔T22n1428 0809c12〕 and 「汝度此羅睺羅童子。」 tr. “You should ordain this youth Rāhula”〔0809c13〕. These passages directly support only the ordination and preceptor relationship; they are not expanded into every possible sense of being a teacher.

8. Explicit Citations of Other Scriptures and Transmitted Ancient Interpretations

A. The Three Minds of the Tathāgata in the Golden Light Sutra

LevelExact wording and anchorDifference
Citation in the root treatise「前心如來不可思議,中心如來種種莊嚴,後心如來不可破壞。」 tr. “The Tathāgata of the former mind is inconceivable; the Tathāgata of the middle mind has every kind of adornment; the Tathāgata of the latter mind cannot be destroyed”〔T34n1718 0033c20〕All three use “mind”; the order is former, middle, latter, and the last phrase lacks the graph meaning “constant”
Closest parallel in the present text「前際如來,不可思議;後際如來,常無破壞;中際如來,種種莊嚴,眾生法界,皆為利他。」 tr. “The Tathāgata of the former limit is inconceivable; the Tathāgata of the latter limit is constantly indestructible; the Tathāgata of the middle limit has every kind of adornment, and both the realm of living beings and the Dharma realm are entirely for the benefit of others”〔T16n0664 0362b29–0362c03〕Mind and limit differ; the order is former, latter, middle; the present text has “constant” and two additional final phrases
Separate citation in the mirror「此經希有難量,初中後善,其義究竟」 tr. “This scripture is rare and difficult to measure, good at the beginning, middle, and end, and ultimate in its meaning”〔T34n1719 0205b20〕Refers to the fourth fascicle of the Golden Light Sutra of the Most Excellent King
Present textual parallel「此《金光明最勝王經》,希有難量,初中後善,文義究竟,皆能成就一切佛法」 tr. “This Golden Light Sutra of the Most Excellent King is rare and difficult to measure, good at the beginning, middle, and end, and ultimate in wording and meaning; it can accomplish every Buddha-Dharma”〔T16n0665 0422a02〕The mirror omits the title and final phrase and has “its meaning,” while the present text has “wording and meaning”

T664 is the present parallel that can be identified with the root treatise's three phrases, but it is not literally identical throughout. T665 is the present witness separately cited by the mirror for goodness at the beginning, middle, and end; it does not retroactively replace the three-minds wording of the root treatise.

B. Entrustment and Consolation in the Sutra of the Bequeathed Teaching

Reference in the root treatise and mirrorExact wording in the present T12n0389Difference
The root treatise says 「囑累如《遺教》」 tr. “The entrustment is like that in the Bequeathed Teaching”〔0035c10〕; the mirror cites 「我滅度後當珍敬波羅提木叉,如暗遇明如貧得寶〔云云〕」 tr. “After my extinction you must cherish and revere the prātimokṣa, as darkness encounters light and as the poor obtain treasure [and so forth]”〔0209a22〕「汝等比丘,於我滅後,當尊重珍敬波羅提木叉,如闇遇明、貧人得寶。 tr. “Bhikṣus, after my extinction you must honor, cherish, and revere the prātimokṣa, as darkness encounters light and as a poor person obtains treasure. Know that this is your great teacher, no different from my abiding in the world”〔1110c20〕The mirror omits “honor” and writes ; the present text writes , while the mirror abbreviates the latter portion with〔云云〕
The root treatise says 「有慰喻亦如《遺教》」 tr. “Its consolation is likewise as in the Bequeathed Teaching”〔0035c10–0035c11〕; the mirror separately cites its conclusion〔0209a27〕「汝等比丘,勿懷憂惱。 tr. “Bhikṣus, do not harbor grief or distress. Even if I were to remain in the world for an eon, our gathering would still end. A gathering that never separates ultimately cannot be obtained. The Dharmas for benefiting oneself and others are all complete; if I were to remain longer, there would be no further benefit”〔1112b07〕The mirror has “sorrow and distress,” while the present text has “grief and distress”; the mirror also repeats “one eon” twice
The root treatise says 「未度者作得度因緣」 tr. “Those not yet liberated have made causes and conditions for liberation”〔T34n1718 0035c11〕「其未度者,皆亦已作得度因緣。」 tr. “Those not yet liberated have also all already made causes and conditions for liberation”〔T12n0389 1112b10〕The present wording directly corresponds

C. Weeping in the Nirvāṇa Sutra

The root treatise only condenses the reference as 「有悲泣如《涅槃》」 tr. “There is grieving and weeping as in the Nirvāṇa Sutra”〔T34n1718 0035c10〕. The mirror expands it as 「涕泣盈目遍體血現,如波羅奢華」 tr. “Tears filled their eyes, blood appeared throughout their bodies, like pālāśa flowers”〔T34n1719 0209a25〕. The present text reads 「舉身毛竪,遍體血現如波羅奢花,涕泣盈目生大苦惱。」 tr. “The hair of their whole bodies stood on end; blood appeared throughout their bodies like pālāśa flowers; tears filled their eyes, and great anguish arose”〔T12n0374 0366a11〕. The present text places blood appearing throughout the body before tears filling the eyes, while the mirror reverses the order; and also differ. The readings are recorded side by side.

D. Eight Statements in the Treatise on the Lotus Sutra

WitnessExact wording in the present textDifference from the transmission in the mirror
tr. “First, wishing to discuss the great Dharma; second, wishing to rain the great Dharma rain; third, wishing to beat the great Dharma drum; fourth, wishing to raise the great Dharma banner; fifth, wishing to light the great Dharma lamp; sixth, wishing to blow the great Dharma conch; seventh, wishing not to interrupt the great Dharma drum; eighth, wishing to teach the great Dharma”〔0004a03〕The mirror has “teach” in the first, “torch” in the fifth, and “expound the meaning of the great Dharma” in the eighth
tr. “First, wishing to turn the great Dharma wheel; second, wishing to rain the great Dharma rain; third, wishing to beat the great Dharma drum; fourth, wishing to raise the great Dharma banner; fifth, wishing to light the great Dharma lamp; sixth, wishing to blow the great Dharma conch; seventh, wishing not to interrupt the great Dharma drum; eighth, wishing to teach the great Dharma”〔0013b19〕The first instead has “turn the great Dharma wheel”; the remainder broadly agrees with the preceding witness

The mirror expressly says that the treatise's eight statements interpret the scripture's five. Its list is a transmitted wording adjusted in light of the root commentary and is not marked as a literal quotation from either of the two present translations.

E. Poluoduo

The root treatise reads 「此翻捷疾,亦云利根,亦云滿語也。」 tr. “This is translated as Swift; it is also called Sharp Faculties and also Full Speech”〔T34n1718 0034a15〕. The mirror reads 「真諦譯也。 “This is Paramārtha's translation. It is one surname among brahmans. The Collection of the Original Acts translates it as Heavy Banner”〔T34n1719 0206a18〕. A present inline annotation reads 「謂頗羅墮〔隋言重幢〕」 tr. “That is, Poluoduo [in Sui speech, Heavy Banner]”〔T03n0190 0841c27〕. The present text directly supports only Heavy Banner. Swift, Sharp Faculties, and Full Speech remain the readings transmitted in the root treatise. The interpretations are recorded side by side, and one is not chosen to replace the others.

F. Kāśyapa Buddha and Master Yao

The root treatise has 「亦如迦葉佛〔云云〕。」 tr. “It was likewise so with Kāśyapa Buddha [and so forth]”〔T34n1718 0034c17〕, with the inline annotation preserving only〔云云〕. The mirror expands it as 「迦葉以土淨故,法華唱滅即入滅也。」 tr. “Because Kāśyapa's land was pure, after announcing extinction in the Lotus he immediately entered extinction”〔T34n1719 0207b23〕. An earlier parallel within the same school reads 「迦葉佛時,亦復如是,悉不明《涅槃》,皆以《法華》為後教後味。」 tr. “At the time of Kāśyapa Buddha it was likewise so: none separately elucidated the Nirvāṇa, and all took the Lotus as the final teaching and final flavor”〔T33n1716 0808a23〕. This record therefore establishes only transmission within the same school and an expansion in the mirror; it has not identified a separate scene in a Kāśyapa Buddha birth story or scripture and therefore does not establish a separate literal root-scripture source.

Master Yao's ancient interpretation is transmitted by the root treatise as 「因者因託,付傳一乘之經,非直對告之人也。」 tr. “‘On account of’ means occasioned through entrustment: entrusting the scripture of the One Vehicle for transmission, not merely the person directly addressed”〔T34n1718 0034b19〕. The mirror repeats and refutes it from〔0206c14–0207a21〕. No independently identifiable present text of Master Yao's original commentary has been obtained for this entry. Only what is transmitted by the root treatise and mirror is recorded; failure to identify the original commentary is not treated as proof that none existed.

G. Entrustment to Maitreya

Wording transmitted in the mirrorPresent textual parallelDifference
“All who once recite ‘Homage to the Buddha’ will encounter Maitreya”〔T34n1719 0209b01〕「九十二億人,一稱南無佛。」 tr. “Nine billion two hundred million people once recited ‘Homage to the Buddha’”〔T12n0384 1026a03〕The present scene concerns those transformed by the former Buddha before Maitreya's three assemblies and does not contain the continuous wording “all will encounter Maitreya”
tr. “Śākyamuni reproached you in many ways but could do nothing with you. He taught you to plant future conditions; now you have planted me”〔T34n1719 0209b02〕「釋迦牟尼佛出五濁世,種種呵責為汝說法,無奈汝何,教殖來緣。 “Śākyamuni Buddha appeared in the world of five defilements, reproached you in many ways, and taught the Dharma for you but could do nothing with you. He taught you to cultivate future conditions; now you are able to see me”〔T14n0456 0431c29–0432a02〕The graphs for plant and cultivate differ; the mirror has “now you have planted me,” while the present text has “now you are able to see me”

Essential Explanations from the Wenjuji [the Mirror]

Zhanran opens this passage through four reading procedures: first opening the divisions, next deriving them, then explaining the reason for reflection and estimation, and finally extensive explanation〔T34n1719 0203a21〕. These are procedures for reading and explaining the passage, not the four prose answers of the root treatise. The mirror follows reflection, the brief and extensive accounts of what was formerly seen, and clear judgment continuously through the forty-five lines and the final four verses, ending with 「疑?」 tr. “doubt?”〔0209b18〕. All five top-level scenes receive direct explanation.

For the reflective answer, the mirror first fixes the correspondence of five statements to six portents: 「欲說等五句既對六瑞,即是以五忖此六瑞。」 tr. “Since the five statements beginning with ‘wishing to teach’ correspond to the six portents, these five are precisely an estimation of the six”〔0203a26〕. Although entering samādhi has no separate statement, the other four portents occur within concentration, so samādhi cannot be absent〔0204a10〕. The five statements also form general and particular levels: the first generally states the great Dharma, while the following four separately state rain, conch, drum, and meaning〔0204a17〕. The mirror further draws the eight statements of the Treatise on the Lotus Sutra into these five, saying that noninterruption, the banner, and the torch are all included within the Dharma drum as continuity of substance, a standard, and the breaking of darkness〔0203b17–0203b26〕. This is Zhanran's inclusive explanation; it does not retroactively make the root treatise explicitly list eight statements.

The brief account uses emitted light to include all six portents in other lands〔0203a27〕. It divides hearing and knowing into the wisdoms of hearing and reflection〔0204c16〕 and also matches them to practice through faith and practice through the Dharma〔0204c19〕. The extensive account changes to two axes: this and other lands in relation are horizontal, while present and past in relation are vertical〔0205a04〕. The first buddha, the twenty thousand buddhas, and the last buddha abbreviate one another. The mirror says that repetition is avoided through mutual indication〔0206a02–0206a04〕; the absence of a second statement in one place cannot be taken to mean that the corresponding meaning is absent.

Within the last buddha's correspondence between formerly and what will be, the person occasioning the teaching is the central interpretive issue. Zhanran relies on the grammar of 「因妙光菩薩、說」 tr. “on account of Wondrous Light Bodhisattva, taught”〔T09n0262 0004a24〕 and asks 「文云「因其說經」,何得云因其流通?」 tr. “The text says ‘on account of him, he taught the scripture’; how could this mean on account of his later transmission?”〔T34n1719 0207a11〕. He judges Wondrous Light to be the direct addressee of the main teaching after the buddha emerges from samādhi, not merely its later transmitter. In correspondence of duration, only the common meaning of length felt as short is taken; the mirror expressly says that sixty and fifty, and the time of a meal and half a day, differ slightly in number〔0207a28〕. The former five divisions of the specific introduction explicitly manifest only the portents and doubt, while the remaining three are inferred in meaning. The mirror reads this as concealing the past to disclose the present〔0206b26–0206c02〕, not as supplying lost wording.

Clear judgment gathers the passage through a movement from subtle to manifest. It is not that Mañjuśrī changes from doubt to knowledge; rather, the form of the answer is implicit first and explicit later〔0208a18〕. The four phrases are distributed as follows: “will teach” corresponds to teaching, “Wondrous Dharma” to the four flowers, “teaching bodhisattvas” to the assembly's joy, and “kept in mind by the buddhas” to earth movement〔0208a21–0208a26〕. The verse does not recite reflection or the brief account again because the extensive account and clear judgment already include their framework〔0208b17〕. The last four verses both repeat the clear answer and end doubts about name, substance, tenet, and function. The passage closes with 「事理合一,何所復疑?」 tr. “Event and principle unite as one; what doubt could remain?”〔0209b17〕.

Explanations of Various Masters

Guangzhai divides the five statements of reflection into direct teaching and similes and prematurely matches them to both the Trace and Origin Gates. The root treatise preserves the possible reading of rain, conch, drum, and related images as similes, but explicitly rejects the allocation of the direct teaching: Maitreya asks only about the six portents in the introduction and has not yet asked about later chapters, so the Origin Gate cannot be assigned here in advance〔T34n1718 0032c24–0033a07〕.

Master Yao reads 「因妙光菩薩」 tr. “on account of Wondrous Light Bodhisattva”〔T09n0262 0004a24〕 as entrustment to a person who will transmit the scripture and holds that Wondrous Light is not the direct addressee of the main teaching after the buddha emerges from samādhi. The root treatise first records this interpretation in full. It then compares the present Buddha addressing Śāriputra after emerging from samādhi with Lamp Radiance Buddha teaching the scripture on account of Wondrous Light, and on the basis of the scriptural wording 「因妙光菩薩、說」 tr. “on account of Wondrous Light Bodhisattva, taught”〔0004a24〕 judges both Wondrous Light and Śāriputra to be direct addressees of the main teaching. Another ancient interpretation reaches ahead to Medicine King as the corresponding person for the present Buddha. The root treatise does not use it because it abandons what is near for what is remote. It also records 「或言,因文殊釋疑,得起定說經,此對不便。」 tr. “Another says that because Mañjuśrī resolves the doubt, the Buddha can emerge from concentration and teach the scripture; this correspondence is unsuitable”〔T34n1718 0034b25〕, judging that match unsuitable as well.

Master Zhao uses four implied challenges to display Maitreya's excellence: after seeing the portents and asking whether the Buddha will teach the Lotus, he might still ask what the teaching's substance is, who will receive it, and what its function is. The root treatise accepts the intelligibility of this sequence of four questions but criticizes it for displaying only Maitreya's excellence in asking, not Mañjuśrī's excellence in answering. It therefore uses the last four verses to end the four doubts one by one, allowing both parties to adorn the exchange〔T34n1718 0036a01–0036a25〕. No independent present text of the original commentary has been identified for this entry, so only what the root treatise transmits is marked.

For the sixth of the seven excellences, the root treatise records a master's reading as excellence in practice alongside its own excellence in pliancy〔0033c17〕. Both are preserved; the editor does not decide between them for the author. Poluoduo likewise retains Swift, Sharp Faculties, Full Speech, and Heavy Banner as cited by the mirror, without allowing one translation to erase the others.

The root treatise also records divergent explanations of the three goodnesses: 「又初、中、後善,解者不同,今且依一途,若小乘以戒、定、慧為三善,大乘以初、中、後心為三善。」 tr. “Again, interpreters differ concerning goodness at the beginning, middle, and end. We now provisionally follow one route: in the lesser vehicle, moral discipline, concentration, and wisdom are the three goodnesses; in the great vehicle, the initial, middle, and final minds are the three goodnesses”〔T34n1718 0033c18〕. The lesser- and greater-vehicle explanations remain side by side; the one route followed does not erase the alternative.

In dividing the formerly, already, now, and what will be, the root treatise first records 「有人作已同當同,不作今同。」 tr. “Someone establishes correspondence with what was already and what will be, but does not establish correspondence with what is now”〔T34n1718 0035a15〕. It then identifies the six portents before the assembly as the now. The ancient interpretation and the root treatise's own judgment are both recorded.

Concerning the function of the final four verses, the root treatise first records 「舊云是結成令物慕仰,今釋不爾」 tr. “An old interpretation says that this is a conclusion intended to make beings aspire and look upward; the present explanation does not take it so”〔T34n1718 0035c25〕. It then reclassifies the verses as a recitation of the answer through clear judgment. Both the old and present explanations are presented, not only the latter.

Terminology

TermFunction in this passage
Dim image; close resemblanceAn observer below first obtains an approximate estimate of someone above and has not yet stated a clear judgment; this is not complete ignorance
Reflect; estimateTo reflect is to think, and to estimate is to measure; the present is reflected upon as like the past, and the past is used to estimate the present. Mañjuśrī manifests deliberation and is not judged actually to lack knowledge
Basis and occasionThe ground and conditions through which the question and answer arise; not the title of a book
Five portents; six portentsFive statements correspond to teaching, raining flowers, the assembly's joy, earth movement, and emitted light; entering samādhi is included because the other portents occur within it, so the six have not been reduced to five
Opening, revealing, awakening to, and enteringIn this passage the four statements are assigned to abodes, practices, dedications, and grounds; only the stage correspondences of this passage are asserted
Wisdoms of hearing and reflection; practice through faith and practice through the DharmaTwo analyses of hearing and knowing in the root treatise; no wisdom of cultivation absent from the scripture is added merely because of the doctrinal sequence that follows
Horizontal and verticalWithin reflection, the terms may refer to general and particular or to stages in breadth and depth; within the extensive account, they refer to this and other lands and to present and past. Each must be read according to the axis of comparison in its location
Seven excellencesThe three goodnesses of beginning, middle, and end, together with levels concerning meaning, language, uniqueness, completeness, pliancy or practice, and loving-kindness
Formerly, already, now, and what will beThe distant past experienced is “formerly,” the recent past is “already,” the present six portents are “now,” and events after the Buddha emerges from samādhi are what “will be”
Revealing the Trace; revealing the Origin“Revealing the Trace” is named from the covering that is removed; “revealing the Origin” is named from the Origin disclosed beneath that covering
Five divisions of the specific introductionGathering the assembly, manifestation of portents, doubt, question, and answer; the account of the past buddha explicitly gives only manifestation and doubt, while the other three are inferred in meaning
Person occasioning the teaching; entrustment; direct addresseeThe first is the person toward whom the teaching is directed; the second is an ancient master's classification of the person entrusted with transmission; on the basis of the scriptural wording, the root treatise judges Wondrous Light to be the direct addressee of the main teaching after the buddha emerges from samādhi
ŚāriputraThe abbreviated designation for Śāriputra; not a generic expression for a child of the Buddha
Equal in correspondencePast and present are even or correspond; it does not bear the sense of weakness
After the practices, no teaching sceneAfter the manifold practices shown in the light, only nirvāṇa and the raising of stūpas are seen, not an assembly in which the Lotus is taught
Announcement of extinction; prediction; transmission of the scriptureThe final three of the six correspondences between formerly and what will be; announcing extinction does not mean announcing that extinction will occur at that very moment
Clear judgmentThe explicit determination, from the sameness of past and present portents, of what the Tathāgata will teach; it still continues the progression from subtle to manifest through reflection and the brief and extensive accounts
Supplementary recitationA verse subsequently supplies the doubt of the former fourfold assembly; this entry follows the root treatise's usage
Like fire extinguished when fuel is exhaustedIn the lesser vehicle, the recompense body is fuel and wisdom fire; in the greater vehicle, living beings' capacities are fuel and the responsive body is fire. Both levels are preserved
Four implied challenges; four implied doubtsThe four implied challenges compel Mañjuśrī to answer, while the four implied doubts are ended by his answer so that Maitreya need not ask again; their directions are opposite
Name, substance, tenet, and functionThe question-and-answer structure through which the last four verses end doubt; these are not four headings in the root scripture
Twofold adornmentThe excellence displayed jointly by question and answer; the root treatise does not separately give two fixed names here

Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward

A dim image and close resemblance first establish the posture of someone below observing someone above. Mañjuśrī does not immediately push out the answer, but enables the assembly to proceed from resemblance and estimation to explicit judgment. Rain, conch, and drum then transform abstract Dharma meanings into palpable functions: rain moistens a cause, the conch changes a designation, and the drum warns an army. Emitted light simultaneously illumines this and other lands, joining the Dharma about to be taught here with what is seen elsewhere.

The five statements resemble an image unfolding from general to particular. Wishing to teach the great Dharma is the general field; raining the Dharma rain, blowing the Dharma conch, beating the Dharma drum, and expounding Dharma meaning are four particular aspects. Entering samādhi has no separate statement, yet remains the basis on which the portents occur. Within the extensive account, the image changes into two axes: this and other lands illuminate one another horizontally, while the present and past verify one another vertically. The first buddha, twenty thousand buddhas, and the last buddha mutually abbreviate their wording. This is not a fracture; it lets the same event become progressively complete at three distances.

The passage's sixty minor eons and the time of a meal are cross-read with 「五十小劫謂如半日」 tr. “fifty minor eons were considered half a day”〔T34n1718 0034c15〕 only through the shared experience of a long duration as short; each number remains as transmitted. “like fire extinguished when fuel is exhausted”〔0035c15〕 likewise admits two levels of explanation: recompense body as fuel and wisdom as fire, and living beings' capacities as fuel and the responsive manifestation as fire. Neither level absorbs the other.

At its end, the passage turns portents into four interlocking questions and answers: what name, what substance, what audience and tenet, and what function? The four verses successively remove these doubts through the name Lotus, the substance of the true mark, the tenet in which seekers converge, and the function that universally moistens. Reflection at the opening is therefore not abandoned at the end. It completes a single path of answer from subtle to manifest, from portent to Dharma, and from question to the point at which doubt no longer remains.

At 〔0035c27〕, 「有」 tr. “has” is not a separately numbered note; opening and closing asterisks mark it, and the apparatus refers back to 0031005 through the corresponding number. The total therefore remains twenty-four numbered variants plus one shared-asterisk variant. At 〔0035c25〕, 『四偈/我見下四行偈』 tr. “‘four verses’ / ‘the four lines of verse below “I saw”’” directly concerns structure. The body still follows the Taishō base and does not silently emend it.

3. Character beyond the Common Character Set and Page Anchors

The strict domain has only one character outside the common character set: , represented by CB00657, with five occurrences at〔0032c29、0033a10、0033a18、0033a21、0033b08〕. The body and quotations from the root treatise preserve and do not replace it with the normalized form . The root scripture's and the two translations of the Treatise on the Lotus Sutra using each remain as witnessed.

The page anchors in this edition follow Taishō page-column transitions: each new page is marked by the nearest line marker preceding the first paragraph on that page, rather than by repeating a marker on every line. The page openings of this unit are T34〔0032c11、0033b05、0034a10、0035a08〕. Other line numbers within a paragraph remain located through the source canon's original line markers. A page anchor therefore indicates only a printed-page transition and cannot replace the exact line anchor fixed by the first characters of a quotation.
