We readily measure hearing the Dharma by distance. Those present in the assembly are closest to the Buddha and should gain the deepest benefit. Passed from one person to another until it reaches the fiftieth hand, with only one verse remaining, the teaching seems too diluted to merit notice.
The Lotus Sutra deliberately begins with this last person. Zhizhe does not conceal how little the person has: only a single thought of understanding, only a single thought of rejoicing for self and others, as yet no outward practice and no ability to benefit others through what has been attained.
Yet “not yet accomplished” does not mean “nothing has happened.”
Zhizhe gives the similes of the Haojian tree and the kalaviṅka. The tree remains underground, yet its shoot is already massive. The bird remains in the shell, yet its voice already surpasses all other birds. Neither pretends to be mature, but neither can be judged powerless merely because it has not emerged from the earth or broken the shell.
Joyful acceptance is the same. “acceptance” does not mean following excitement; it means trusting, conforming to, and penetrating the events and principle one hears. “joy” is not merely personal happiness; one rejoices both that oneself can hear and understand and that others also hear the Dharma. Wisdom prevents empty joy; compassion prevents solitary joy.
The chapter therefore says that the fiftieth person’s qualities cannot be slighted, but it does not encourage anyone to remain forever at the fiftieth hand. It next speaks of personally going to hear the Dharma, giving one’s seat to another, encouraging another person to go, and hearing fully and practicing as taught. If the initial thought of joyful acceptance is genuine, it moves from the mind toward the Dharma seat, from oneself toward others, and from hearing toward practice.
The long comparison of blessings likewise does not ask us to disparage giving, building or repairing stūpas, harmonizing the saṅgha, or eliminating afflictions. Each blessing is first described honestly, and only then is it shown, level by level, that the first joyful response arising from hearing the Lotus Sutra occupies a place no outward scale can replace.
Sometimes we have heard, but reject our own beginning too quickly. A single thought of understanding stirs, yet because it has not become action we call it useless. A measure of joy arises, yet because it cannot benefit many people we call it too small. Such self-disparagement is exactly what can halt a thought that might otherwise unfold.
There is an opposite danger as well: hearing that the qualities of the initial mind are vast, one treats the initial mind as the endpoint. But Zhizhe explicitly lists the later grades and the road of practice, and distinguishes inward joyful acceptance from outward hearing. The beginning must not be slighted precisely because it can unfold further. If one does not continue, one has not completed the path indicated by the chapter.
The next time one hears a sentence of Dharma and joy arises, one might ask: can I refrain from discarding this thought while also not storing it only in my own mind? Am I willing to take one more step—to approach the Dharma seat, yield a seat, invite one person to hear with me, and bring what I hear into action?
The fiftieth person’s thought is not spectacular. Yet a tree is not without growth before it emerges from the earth, and a bird is not without voice before it breaks its shell. What truly deserves protection is precisely that beginning—still small and slight, yet already open toward hearing, understanding, joy, and practice.

I. Acceptance and Joy
We now explain “The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance.”
“acceptance” means conforming to events and principle, with no duality or difference in what is followed. “joy” means rejoicing for oneself and for others. On hearing the profound Dharma, conforming to principle brings real qualities and conforming to events provisional qualities. Rejoicing for oneself means possessing wisdom; rejoicing for others means holding compassion toward them. Because provisional and real, wisdom and severance, are combined in the explanation, the chapter is called “The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance.”
To elaborate on conforming to principle: hearing that the Buddha’s Origin is profound and ever more profound, one trusts, accepts, and follows without opposition, without the least doubt or obstruction. To elaborate on conforming to events: hearing that the Buddha benefits beings throughout past, present, and future and that his transforming benefit pervades every place horizontally and vertically, one likewise has not the least doubt or obstruction. Through vast events one penetrates profound principle, and through profound principle one penetrates vast events. Originally nondual, they can nevertheless be spoken of as two; originally undifferentiated, they can nevertheless be distinguished. Though spoken of as two and differentiated, ultimately they remain nondual and undifferentiated. Trusting and understanding in this way is called acceptance.
For more than forty years after appearing in the world, the Tathāgata had not yet revealed the real or told the seven kinds of skillful-means practitioners the true truth. Now one can rejoice for oneself and others, equating an ordinary person’s mind with what the Buddha knows and one’s own produced eye with the Tathāgata’s vision. This knowledge and vision exhausts the Dharma realm, vast without shore or bottom. It is unequaled, equal to the Unequaled, and surpassed by no dharma. The Buddha now teaches this Dharma meaning and I now hear it; therefore the chapter is called “The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance.”
II. Why the Fiftieth Person Reveals the Qualities of the Initial Mind
The person at the fiftieth point of successive transmission is the very beginning of the first grade. This beginning has only a single thought of understanding and a single thought of rejoicing for oneself and others. It has no outward practice yet, nor has its benefit reached others. Yet the qualities gained, disclosed through the Tathāgata’s skillfully established simile, surpass those beyond training. If even the fiftieth person is so, how much more the first person who hears directly in the assembly, those who have reached the second, third, fourth, and fifth grades, and those who enter the stages from the ten abodes and ten practices through the later mind? Who could hear of such profound and wondrous qualities without admiring and aspiring to them? The Tathāgata teaches this so that beings will honor and aspire; therefore the chapter is called “The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance.”
The preceding text repeatedly praised the qualities of accepting and upholding the sutra. The assembly thought that one must enter the real causal stage to accomplish such qualities and therefore regarded the very beginning of the initial mind as slight and weak. Suddenly they hear that while the Haojian tree remains underground, its shoot already measures a hundred spans, and that while the kalaviṅka remains in the shell, its voice already surpasses all other birds. The assembly finds this rare and extraordinary, and its disparagement and doubt toward the initial mind are removed; therefore the chapter is called “The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance.”
Although outsiders who attain five supernormal powers can move mountains and exhaust seas, they cannot subdue the delusions of views and craving and do not equal a person at the stage of warmth. Though those beyond training in the two vehicles are liberated in both seed and fruit, they remain bound by nirvāṇa and do not know that their causes and fruits are provisional. Though those of the Shared Teaching skillfully cultivate the cause, at initial resolve they do not recognize the five hundred yojanas and at realization eliminate only the four abiding delusions. Though those of the Separate Teaching surpass the two vehicles, their cultivation of the cause remains one-sided and their gateway clumsy, and is not praised by the Buddha. None equals the person of initial joyful acceptance. The Buddha now adduces the first letter “A” to compare with the final letter “Cha”; both surpass the various teachings. Therefore the chapter is called “The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance.”
III. Joyful Acceptance in the Great Prajñāpāramitā and This Chapter’s Question and Answer
Someone asks: how does the joyful acceptance here relate to the joyful acceptance taught in the Great Prajñāpāramitā?
Answer: here the Dharma is adduced; there the person is adduced. Person and Dharma are mutually adduced.
This chapter’s sutra text has a question and an answer, each in prose and verse. The preceding chapter already measured the latter four kinds of people but did not discuss the first. Maitreya therefore follows the capacities of the time, asks about this level, and draws its meaning out. Such is the sutra text.
The Buddha’s answer divides into two: first, answering concerning a person of inward joyful acceptance; second, directly explaining a person who hears the Dharma outwardly. The first part again has five topics: teaching one another in succession; the foundational event used for measurement; the Buddha’s question; Maitreya’s answer; and the formal measure. The number and order of all five follow the sutra text, and question and answer each retain their place.
IV. Two Ancient Explanations of the Fifty People and the Root Treatise’s Calculations
The southern explanation divides the fifty people into three: first, each later person is successively superior to the previous one; second, later and previous are equal; third, each later person is successively inferior. A succession of increasingly superior people is hard to find; an equal succession is likewise rare; a gradually inferior succession is closer to the sutra. Measuring with the inferior final person can inversely reveal the qualities of the equal people in the middle and the superior ones before them.
The northern explanation says that one at wondrous awakening first teaches a person of the tenth ground, the person of the tenth ground then teaches one of the ninth, and so on in succession until the ten trusts; the final person is used to measure the first.
The root treatise considers this incorrect. The Buddha clearly says that the first person of the first grade hears Dharma in the assembly, after which one person transmits to another, teaching each other in succession until the fiftieth, and the last measures the first. The final point of transmission is not the beginning of the ten trusts, nor is the first point the end of wondrous awakening. Why adopt such an explanation? Though it raises the stages very high, it does not accord with the sutra’s intent.
The root treatise establishes two other calculations. The first counts horizontally through the fourfold assemblies of the various teachings; the second counts directly through the Perfect Teaching.
In the first, the Tripiṭaka Teaching has four gateways. Each has the fourfold assembly, with male and female novices distinguished to make six people. Six under each of four gateways gives twenty-four. Divided further according to practice through trust and practice through Dharma, they make forty-eight; adding the first and last gives fifty. The four gateways of the Shared and Separate teachings are counted in the same way.
The second calculation directly follows the Perfect gateway. Its components are the lesser seven and greater seven; the greater seven has seven groups of seven, making forty-nine. These are teachers and disciples who possess the qualities of personal practice and teaching others. Only the final person understands personally without possessing the quality of teaching others. The lowest person is therefore used for the measure to reveal the qualities of those above.
V. Measuring from Worldly Pleasure to the Blessing of Initial Joyful Acceptance
The measure first speaks of giving worldly pleasure and removing the suffering of resultant recompense, then giving the pleasure of nirvāṇa and removing the suffering of birth and death. This briefly indicates Brahmā blessing; it is now explained extensively.
The blessing of all people filling Jambudvīpa does not equal that of one person in Aparagodānīya. The blessing of all people filling Aparagodānīya does not equal that of one person in Pūrvavideha. The blessing of all people filling three continents does not equal that of one person in Uttarakuru. The blessing of all people filling the four continents does not equal that of one of the Four Great Kings. Their blessing does not equal that of one Śakra. Proceeding thus through the sixth heaven still does not equal one Brahmā blessing.
Brahmā blessing has two kinds: meditative and dispersed. Dispersed blessing has four forms: building a stūpa where none exists; repairing a damaged stūpa; harmonizing the saṅgha and requesting it to turn the Dharma wheel; and reuniting a dispersed saṅgha. These four blessings equal the blessing of the Brahmā heaven and are therefore called Brahmā blessings.
Noble blessing is the blessing of an arhat dwelling in the final body and attaining nirvāṇa with remainder. There are also people of the three vehicles who embody dharmas, together study non-arising, and exhaust afflictions, like burning wood into charcoal. There is also the noble blessing of a sattva: personal practice and transformation of others both eliminate afflictions through the path without words and enter nirvāṇa without remainder. There is also the blessing of a sattva: beginning with initial resolve, one progressively transforms others so that they enter great nirvāṇa.
Measured level by level: Brahmā blessing does not equal noble blessing; noble blessing does not equal the blessing of nobles who embody dharmas; that does not equal the blessing of a lesser sattva; the lesser sattva’s does not equal the greater sattva’s; and the greater sattva’s does not equal the blessing of initial joyful acceptance on hearing the Lotus Sutra. Why? Because the preceding are not Buddha-Dharma, not real, and not perfect. Though one may already dwell in a later fruit, it still does not equal the initial mind here. Such is the meaning of this passage.
VI. The Private Record’s Fifty Qualities and the Qualities of the Six Faculties
The private record considers the qualities gained by encouraging another to hear the Dharma—from being born in the same place as a dhāraṇī bodhisattva through possessing the complete human marks—to total fifty. If each quality is treated as a person’s designation, fifty people can likewise be counted. Yet the fifty above concern inward understanding and joyful acceptance; these concern only outward acts. This is their difference.
This sutra passage also has qualities of the six faculties. Sharp faculties and wisdom are qualities of mind; not being mute, of tongue; a long, high, straight nose, of nose; seeing the Buddha, of eye; hearing the Dharma, of ear; all the rest listed, of body. The preceding passage concerns qualities at the semblant stage; this one concerns qualities before the semblant stage.
The passage on hearing the sutra has four topics: first, personally going; second, yielding a seat; third, encouraging another to go; fourth, hearing fully and practicing as taught. 〔The remainder is abbreviated.〕
VII. Eighteen Lines of Verse
The verse has eighteen lines divided in two. The first nine recapitulate joyful acceptance. Beginning with “if there is one who encourages,” the second nine recapitulate hearing the sutra.
The nine on joyful acceptance again divide into three. First, the initial line and a half recapitulate the fiftieth person. Second, the five and a half lines beginning with “the final person” recapitulate the foundational event used for measurement. Third, the two lines beginning with “the final” recapitulate the formal measure. The verse abbreviates what it does not recapitulate because the blessings are exceedingly numerous.
The latter nine on hearing the sutra differ slightly in sequence from the prose and divide into four. First, the initial five lines leap over the preceding topic and recapitulate encouraging another to hear. Second, the two lines beginning with “if one intentionally goes” return and retrospectively recapitulate personally going to hear. Third, the one line beginning with “if at a place where Dharma is taught” recapitulates yielding a seat. Fourth, the one line beginning with “how much more” recapitulates practicing as taught. 〔The remainder is abbreviated.〕
One person hears the Dharma directly in the assembly; another receives it in succession at the fiftieth hand and hears only one verse, yet gives rise to joyful acceptance. Ordinarily we would think that the farther the transmission, the thinner the benefit. This chapter deliberately begins with the last person, shows that even this person’s qualities are beyond simile, and uses the last to reveal the first person who heard directly.
The point is not merely to remember an enormous number. The text first explains “acceptance” and “joy,” then distinguishes why the initial mind must not be slighted, measures different blessings level by level, and finally turns to personally going, yielding a seat, encouraging another, and hearing and practicing. The qualities cannot be slighted not because they look outwardly vast, but because a single thought of understanding and a single thought of rejoicing for self and others already carry the Dharma forward from the place where it was heard.
I. Joyful Acceptance Is More Than Being Happy for Someone
The root treatise first separates the two words. “acceptance” means conforming to events and principle; “joy” means rejoicing for oneself and for others. Rejoicing for oneself entails wisdom, because one hears and understands. Rejoicing for others entails compassion, because one does not keep what one has gained for oneself. Joy is therefore not a passing emotion while watching someone else succeed, but is joined to hearing, understanding, and delight in another’s good.
Nor is “acceptance” blind agreement. Conforming to principle means hearing that the Buddha’s Origin is exceedingly profound and distant, trusting and following without opposition, without the least doubt or obstruction. Conforming to events means hearing that the Buddha benefits beings in the three periods, pervading every place horizontally and vertically, likewise without doubt or obstruction. Profound principle and vast events must both be penetrated.
The root treatise immediately adds that through vast events one penetrates profound principle, and through profound principle one penetrates vast events. The nondual can be spoken of as two; what is undifferentiated can be distinguished. Though spoken of as two and differentiated, ultimately they remain nondual and undifferentiated. Acceptance therefore does not fall to one side. Seeing vast events without reaching profound principle easily stops at appearances; speaking only of profound principle without reaching vast events cannot see how the Buddha benefits beings in the three periods.
Thus the joy born of hearing is not another feeling produced apart from the principle heard. The Buddha teaches now and I hear now; what is known and seen opens, and rejoicing for oneself and others arises from it. “Acceptance” keeps joy from leaving the Dharma; “joy” keeps understanding from being sealed within oneself.
II. Why the First Thought Must Not Be Regarded as Weak
The fiftieth person is called the beginning of the first grade. The person has only a single thought of understanding and a single thought of rejoicing for self and others, without outward practice and without benefit yet reaching others. Seen only from the outside, this is indeed slight. To infer that the person’s qualities are likewise slight is precisely the doubt this chapter resolves.
The sutra uses the fiftieth person to measure the first hearer in the assembly. The root treatise then proceeds from that first hearer through the second, third, fourth, and fifth grades, and onward to the ten abodes, ten practices, and later mind. The distinction between initial and later mind, between no outward practice yet and subsequent stages of practice, remains clear. Its point is that not yet complete does not mean powerless, and the visible form of later practice cannot be projected backward to judge the beginning weak.
The Haojian tree and kalaviṅka illuminate this exactly. While the Haojian tree remains underground, its shoot already measures a hundred spans; while the kalaviṅka remains in the shell, its voice already surpasses all other birds. Neither simile says that the shoot is already a full tree or that the fledgling has left the shell. Both preserve “still at the beginning” while breaking the inference “therefore necessarily weak.”
This is where the initial mind is most easily misread. People use completed forms to measure nascent strength: without outward practice, they assume understanding is inadequate; not yet able to benefit others, they assume rejoicing for them has no force. The root treatise acknowledges that the practice is slight but will not equate slight practice directly with slight qualities. Though the thought has no outward practice yet, its qualities surpass those beyond training; this distinguishes it from an ordinary thought.
III. Why Outsiders, the Two Vehicles, and the Various Teachings Are Still Adduced
After resolving the doubt of weakness, the root treatise successively compares outsiders with five supernormal powers, those beyond training in the two vehicles, and the Shared and Separate teachings. Though outsiders can move mountains and exhaust seas, they cannot subdue the delusions of views and craving. Though those beyond training in the two vehicles are liberated in both seed and fruit, they remain bound by nirvāṇa and do not know that cause and result are both provisional. Though those of the Shared Teaching skillfully cultivate the cause, at initial resolve they do not recognize the five hundred yojanas and eliminate only the four abiding delusions. Though the Separate Teaching surpasses the two vehicles, its cultivation of the cause remains one-sided and its gateway clumsy, not praised by the Buddha.
Every comparison answers the same doubt about weakness. If only outward ability, attained fruit, or skill in cultivating causes is considered, the initial mind naturally looks small. Yet the root treatise measures whether one has heard this Dharma and, through understanding it, given rise to joyful acceptance. The letter A comes first and the letter Cha last. Though placed at opposite ends, both are used to show transcendence of the various teachings. The fiftieth person’s initial thought is revealed as not slight through the same comparison.
This also prevents an opposite misunderstanding. Praising the initial mind does not belittle the sequence of practice, still less claim that one thought has already completed everything. The root treatise explicitly says that the fiftieth person has no outward practice yet, and later lists the second through fifth grades, the ten abodes, ten practices, and later mind in order. The beginning deserves respect because it has truly begun; after that beginning there remains a complete road of practice.
IV. Why Ancient Explanations of the Fifty-Person Transmission Cannot Replace the Sutra
The Buddha’s answer first divides into inward joyful acceptance and outward hearing. Inward joyful acceptance again has five topics: teaching one another in succession, the foundational event used for measurement, the question, the answer, and the formal measure. The sutra itself says that one person hears and rejoices, then teaches another, and that this transmission reaches the fiftieth. This succession is the direct basis for understanding the number.
The southern tradition explains the fifty people in three ways: successively superior, successively equal, and successively inferior. The northern tradition descends from wondrous awakening through the tenth and ninth grounds until the ten trusts, using the last stage to reveal the first. The root treatise explicitly answers the northern account: the sutra speaks of people teaching one another after hearing in the assembly until the fiftieth. The final endpoint is not the beginning of the ten trusts, nor the first endpoint the conclusion of wondrous awakening. However profound the calculation, if it leaves the people and events narrated by the sutra, it cannot accord with the sutra’s intent.
The root treatise then proposes two calculations. The first uses four gateways and the fourfold assembly, adding male and female novices to make six people under each gateway. Four gateways make twenty-four; divided further according to practice through trust and practice through Dharma, they become forty-eight, and the first and last make fifty. The second directly uses the lesser seven, greater seven, and seven times seven to make forty-nine, then adds one person who can understand personally but does not yet possess the quality of teaching others. The calculations differ, yet both preserve the succession of teacher and disciple and the place of the final person.
The number always serves the sutra. Fifty is not an abstract chart of stages on which to build after leaving the scene of transmission. It shows the Dharma moving from one person to another, each act of hearing, rejoicing, and passing it on continuing the transmission. Though the final person can only understand personally, that person has understood; because the first forty-nine both understand and teach, they do not merely transmit a sound.
V. How One Level of Blessing Is Surpassed by the Next
The chapter’s measure begins with worldly pleasure and the suffering of resultant recompense, then nirvāṇa’s pleasure and the suffering of birth and death. The root treatise therefore lists in detail the continents of the human world, the Four Great Kings, Śakra, the devas up to Brahmā blessing, and divides Brahmā blessing into meditative and dispersed. The four dispersed blessings are concrete: building a stūpa where none exists, repairing one that is damaged, harmonizing the saṅgha and requesting the turning of the Dharma wheel, and reuniting a dispersed saṅgha.
Next comes noble blessing: an arhat abides in the final body and attains nirvāṇa with remainder. Beyond that, the three vehicles that embody dharmas together study non-arising and exhaust afflictions, like burning wood into charcoal. The noble blessing of a sattva combines practice for oneself and transformation of others, eliminating delusion through the path without words and entering nirvāṇa without remainder. The blessing of a sattva begins with initial resolve and progressively transforms others so that they enter great nirvāṇa.
In the total measure, Brahmā blessing does not equal noble blessing; noble blessing does not equal the blessing of nobles who embody dharmas; that does not equal the blessing of a lesser sattva; the lesser sattva’s does not equal the greater sattva’s; and the greater sattva’s does not equal the blessing of initial joyful acceptance on hearing the Lotus Sutra. Each level is fully stated before it is said not to equal the next. The root treatise does not deny that the preceding wholesome acts have blessing; by successive comparisons it shows that the Dharma toward which initial joyful acceptance is directed is real and perfect.
The root sutra originally says that vast giving and enabling immeasurable beings to attain arhatship still do not equal the qualities of the fiftieth person who hears one verse and rejoices. The root treatise’s extensive measure preserves this direction. It asks not only how much was done, but whether what was attained belongs to Buddha-Dharma, is real, and is perfect. If these three differ, occupying a later fruit cannot win merely because it is “later” over the “initial” point here.
VI. How Inward Joyful Acceptance Moves into Outward Hearing
The second part of the Buddha’s answer concerns the person who hears outwardly. A later private record counts fifty qualities from being born in the same place as a dhāraṇī bodhisattva through possessing complete human marks. If each quality is treated as the name of a person, fifty people can likewise be counted. It preserves the distinction: the former fifty concern inward understanding and joyful acceptance; the latter fifty concern outward acts.
This does not split inward and outward into unrelated parts. The root sutra first speaks of hearing in succession and inward joyful acceptance, then personally going to hear, yielding a seat, encouraging another to go, and hearing fully and practicing as taught. If joyful acceptance stops inwardly, it has not yet reached subsequent acts; if outward acts do not arise from hearing and understanding Dharma, they lose the acceptance and joy explained at the chapter’s opening.
The root treatise clearly divides outward hearing into four and does not merge them. Personally going means going oneself to the place where Dharma is heard. Yielding a seat means making room at the assembly for a later arrival. Encouraging another causes that person also to approach the Dharma seat. Hearing fully and practicing does not treat attendance and hearing as the endpoint. The four move from going oneself, to hearing with another, to acting according to what was heard. Though the fiftieth person above has only inward understanding and no outward practice yet, the later text shows how that thought enters bodily action and moves from oneself to others. Inward joyful acceptance is therefore the starting point; outward hearing is the action that unfolds from it. They follow one another without being conflated.
Yielding a seat and encouraging another especially show that the Dharma seat is not reserved for oneself. What one gains not only causes personal joy, but makes one wish another person to come and hear.
The qualities of the six faculties bring the attainment into the whole person. Sharp faculties and wisdom belong to mind; not being mute to tongue; a long, high, straight nose to nose; seeing the Buddha to eye; hearing Dharma to ear; and the remainder to body. The preceding passage speaks of qualities at the semblant stage, this one of qualities before the semblant stage. Though the names of the six faculties are the same, their earlier and later placements remain distinct.
VII. The Verse Order Differs Slightly, but the Path of Meaning Still Closes
The final eighteen lines of verse divide into two groups of nine. The first nine recapitulate joyful acceptance, the latter nine hearing the sutra. The nine on joyful acceptance have three divisions: first the fiftieth person; next the vast giving and attained fruit serving as the basis of measurement; finally the formal measure. Because the blessings are so numerous, they are only summarized.
The nine on hearing divide into four but do not rearrange themselves according to the prose order. They first leap ahead to recapitulate encouraging another to hear, then return to personally going, next recapitulate yielding a seat, and finally practice. This “slight departure from sequence” preserves the verse’s own order of unfolding, which differs from the prose.
The ending draws the whole chapter tight again. The fiftieth person is not an isolated calculation, but the endpoint of successive teaching. The measure is not abstract exaggeration, but has vast giving and attained fruit as comparison. Outward hearing is not one act but personally going, yielding a seat, encouraging another, and practicing. The first thought of joy thus unfolds step by step through hearing, understanding, teaching, and practice. Each step has its own place, and each has qualities that must not be slighted.
Through the Eye of the Wenjuji
Zhanran first reads the root treatise’s four conclusions of the chapter title as meanings of the four siddhāntas, saying “The four conclusions of the chapter title also have the meaning of the four siddhāntas, though not in sequence; they must be explained so that the meanings correspond” 〔T34n1719 0344a08–0344a09〕. This correspondence is established only in the Mirror. Zhizhe’s root text actually concludes the name within four separate passages and does not list four siddhāntas in four columns.
Concerning acceptance and joy, Zhanran says “In the initial explanation of acceptance, events and principle are merely alternate names for provisional and real. Understanding provisional and real as not provisional and real, they are therefore nondual and undifferentiated” 〔0344a21–0344a22〕. He also says “Because one personally hears the sutra and can also teach others, only with compassion and wisdom complete is it called joy” 〔0344b01–0344b02〕. He further illuminates the root treatise’s benefiting beings in three periods and horizontal and vertical pervasion with “Long transformation is vertical and extensive transformation horizontal, because each point in the intervening period pervades the ten directions” 〔0344b15–0344b16〕. Zhizhe’s root treatise directly states events and principle, rejoicing for self and others, and benefiting beings in three periods; provisional/real, complete compassion and wisdom, and long/extensive transformation are Zhanran’s clarifications.
In the passage on the fiftieth person, Zhanran further divides the measure into three: “The measure again has three: first, explaining that the practice is slight. In acceptance there is only principle and not yet provisional function; in joy there is only oneself and no ability yet to benefit others” 〔0344c10–0344c11〕. He explains the progression from the fiftieth person through the fifth grade to the later mind with “This is the first grade, hence ‘how much more the fifth?’ This is the beginning of Perfect-Teaching stages, hence ‘how much more the later mind?’” 〔0344c14–0344c16〕. He directs the sources of the Haojian and kalaviṅka similes to the first and seventh records of the Great Calming and Contemplation 〔0344c24–0344c25〕.
Concerning the southern interpretations of superior, equal, and inferior, Zhanran comments: “Though the text does not refute them, their principle is not entirely so. It need only follow gradual inferiority and use the later to reveal the first; what use are equality and superiority?” 〔0345a20–0345a21〕. Of the root treatise’s first calculation he says it is “the present proper explanation, because the ancients’ explanation as fifty stages damaged the text and lost the principle; it is now assisted by provisionally relying on teaching gateways to establish the number of people” 〔0345a22–0345a24〕. Of the second he says, “including the final person makes fifty; this too only provisionally fits the number” 〔0345b09–0345b10〕. “Provisionally relying” and “only provisionally” limit both calculations: they serve here to fit the number and are not fixed real stages.
At the measure of blessings, Zhanran says “the initial blessing of the many noble ones is now used to measure the benefit of the final hearer of the sutra” 〔0345b28–0345b29〕. He also clarifies the names great and small by comparing the three kinds of sattva in succession 〔0345c02–0345c04〕. He reads the Flower Garland’s measure at initial resolve together with the present measure of initial joyful acceptance, while still clearly keeping the two sutras’ situations distinct.
The twenty-five phrases of the fifty qualities were not individually assigned by Zhizhe. Zhanran explicitly marks the authorship: “Here these qualities correspond to fifty people. Zhang’an merely marked the number and did not point to the sutra text. I now correlate them briefly, combining every two qualities into one phrase” 〔0345c10–0345c11〕. Thus the itemized division from being in one place and having sharp faculties through seeing the Buddha and hearing the Dharma belongs to Zhanran.
Concerning the semblant stage, Zhanran also says “At times the Master, on the basis of the Contemplation of Samantabhadra, places the five grades within the six faculties; hence they are called ‘semblant’” 〔0345c26–0345c27〕. Concerning the chapter title’s scope, he says “The title ‘joyful acceptance’ is not confined specifically to the first; it extends through all fifty people” 〔0346a01〕. Finally he explains the practice annotation: the fifty qualities may all be possessed by one person or each person may gain one, depending on their strength, and cannot definitively be said always to be complete 〔0346a01–0346a03〕. He also notes that the verse does not recapitulate the question and answer and that the section on hearing the sutra departs slightly from prose order 〔0346a03–0346a05〕. The Mirror closes within the root treatise’s joyful acceptance, measure, hearing, and practice, keeping each passage in its original place.

This unit explains the whole of “The Qualities of Joyful Acceptance,” chapter eighteen: first the chapter title, then the initial mind’s qualities as revealed by the fiftieth person, followed by divisions of prose and verse, divergent interpretations of the fifty people, the measurement of blessings, qualities of the six faculties, and four topics concerning hearing the sutra. Its strict domain excludes the next chapter title.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
This unit lies within the Origin Gate. Its strict domain is T34n1718 〔0138b17–0139b16〕. The chapter title 「釋隨喜功德品」 tr. “Explanation of the Chapter on the Qualities of Joyful Acceptance” begins at 〔0138b17〕. The first sentence of the body, 「「隨」者隨順事理無二無別,「喜」是慶己慶人」 tr. “‘Acceptance’ means conforming to events and principle as nondual and undifferentiated; ‘joy’ means rejoicing for oneself and others,” begins at 〔0138b18〕. The final sentence, 「頌修行〔云云〕」 tr. “the verse recapitulates practice [and so forth],” is at 〔0139b16〕. The next title, 「釋法師功德品」 tr. “Explanation of the Chapter on the Qualities of the Dharma Teacher,” begins at 〔0139b17〕 and is excluded.
According to the root treatise’s own transitions, questions and answers, and enumerations, it divides into nine topics:
| Sequence | Line domain | Root-treatise content |
|---|---|---|
| One | 0138b18–0138b21 | Explaining acceptance and joy, events and principle, provisional and real, wisdom and compassion |
| Two | 0138b21–0138c02 | Conforming to principle and events; nondual yet two; rejoicing in hearing the Buddha’s profound Origin |
| Three | 0138c02–0138c08 | The fiftieth person is the beginning of the first grade; using the later to reveal the first |
| Four | 0138c08–0138c19 | Resolving doubt that the initial mind is weak; the Haojian and kalaviṅka similes and comparisons with the teachings |
| Five | 0138c19–0138c24 | Question and answer on joyful acceptance in the Great Prajñāpāramitā; the chapter’s question and answer; the Buddha’s twofold answer and the first part’s five topics |
| Six | 0138c24–0139a10 | Southern and northern explanations; after rejecting the latter, the root treatise establishes two calculations |
| Seven | 0139a10–0139a29 | Measuring level by level from worldly pleasure, Brahmā blessing, and noble blessing through initial joyful acceptance |
| Eight | 0139a29–0139b08 | The private record’s fifty qualities, qualities of the six faculties, and four topics on hearing the sutra |
| Nine | 0139b08–0139b16 | Eighteen lines of verse: nine on joyful acceptance and nine on hearing the sutra, each internally divided |
The chapter title in Zhanran’s Fahua Wenjuji occurs at T34n1719 〔0344a07〕. Its direct explanation begins with 「釋品題中四重結名,亦四悉意但不次第,理須消釋使義相當」 tr. “The four conclusions of the chapter title also have the meaning of the four siddhāntas, though not in sequence; they must be explained so that the meanings correspond” 〔0344a08〕 and ends with 「頌中頌前隨喜中五、不頌問答,準可知故,頌聞經中少不次第,對之可知」 tr. “In the verse, the preceding five topics of joyful acceptance are recapitulated, but not the question and answer, which can be known by analogy; within the verse on hearing the sutra there is a slight departure from sequence, evident by comparison” 〔0346a03–0346a05〕. The next chapter begins separately at 〔0346a06〕.
II. Formation and Transmission
Shenjiong’s preface at the beginning of the fascicle calls the book 「迺是灌頂法師私記,合二十卷」 tr. “Dharma Master Guanding’s private record, combined into twenty fascicles” 〔T34n1718 0001a23–0001a24〕 and records Master Lang’s ordering and editing in the wuzi year of Tianbao under the Tang. The headings of the present half-fascicles attribute the teaching only to Tiantai Master Zhizhe. This unit therefore distinguishes Zhizhe’s doctrinal teaching, Guanding’s private record, and the later edited text. No other witness preserves the original sequence for paragraph-by-paragraph reconstruction, so the body follows the received Taishō text. The history of editing records transmission and is not used to adjudicate additions or deletions.
III. Sutra Passages Explained and Works Cited

Suppose that in four hundred myriads of millions of asaṃkhyeya worlds there are beings of the six destinies and four modes of birth—born from eggs, wombs, moisture, or transformation; with or without form, with or without perception, neither with nor without perception; footless, two-footed, four-footed, or many-footed—all such beings included among the number of beings’” | T09n0262 〔0046c04–0046c09〕 | 0138c23–0138c24 |

tr. “After this great donor has given in this way for a full eighty years, the donor thinks: ‘I have given these beings whatever instruments of pleasure they wished, yet all have grown old, are over eighty, with white hair and wrinkled faces, and will die before long. I should guide them with the Buddha-Dharma.’ The donor gathers them, proclaims the Dharma teaching, and shows, teaches, benefits, and delights them. All at once they attain the paths of stream-enterer, once-returner, non-returner, and arhat, exhaust all contaminants, master profound meditation, and possess the eight liberations” | T09n0262 〔0046c13–0046c19〕 | 0139a10–0139a11 |

If the donor merely gave beings every instrument of pleasure, the qualities would already be immeasurable; how much more after enabling them to attain arhatship?’” | T09n0262 〔0046c20–0046c23〕 | 0138c23–0138c24 |
tr. “The Buddha told Maitreya: ‘I now tell you clearly: this person gives every instrument of pleasure to beings of the six destinies in four hundred myriads of millions of asaṃkhyeya worlds and also enables them to attain arhatship, yet the qualities gained do not equal those of the fiftieth person who hears one verse of the Lotus Sutra and joyfully accepts it. They do not equal one hundredth, one thousandth, or one part in hundreds of thousands of myriads of millions; the difference cannot be known by calculation or simile’” | T09n0262 〔0046c23–0046c28〕 | 0138c23–0138c24、0139a24–0139a29 |

How much more the first person who hears and rejoices in the assembly? That blessing is even more excellent, immeasurable, boundless, and asaṃkhyeya, beyond comparison’” | T09n0262 〔0046c28–0047a02〕 | 0138c02–0138c08、0138c24–0139a10 |

tr. “‘Again, Ajita, if someone tells another, “There is a sutra called the Lotus; let us go hear it together,” and the other accepts the invitation and hears it for even a moment, through these qualities in the next birth that person is born in the same place as dhāraṇī bodhisattvas, possesses sharp faculties and wisdom, and throughout hundreds of thousands of myriads of lifetimes is never mute. The breath does not smell; tongue and mouth are never diseased; the teeth are not stained black, yellow, sparse, missing, uneven, or crooked; the lips neither droop nor retract, are neither rough nor ulcerated, neither damaged nor askew, neither thick nor large nor dark, and have nothing repellent. The nose is neither flat nor crooked; the complexion is neither black, narrow and long, nor hollow and distorted, and has no disagreeable mark. Lips, tongue, teeth, and gums are all beautifully adorned; the nose is long, high, and straight; the face full; the brows high and long; the forehead broad, level, and straight; the human marks complete. In every birth the person sees buddhas, hears Dharma, and trusts and accepts instruction’” | T09n0262 〔0047a08–0047a20〕 | 0139a29–0139b07 |
“‘Ajita, consider this: encouraging one person to go hear the Dharma has such qualities. How much more one who single-mindedly listens to the teaching, reads and recites, distinguishes it for others in the assembly, and practices as taught?’ At that time the World-Honored One, wishing to proclaim this meaning again, spoke in verse” | T09n0262 〔0047a20–0047a23〕 | 0139b07–0139b08 |
tr. “‘If a person in the Dharma assembly hears this scripture, even a single verse, joyfully accepts it, and teaches it to another, and thus it is taught in succession until the fiftieth person, I will now distinguish the blessing gained by the last’” | T09n0262 〔0047a24–0047a27〕 | 0139b08–0139b11 |
tr. “Suppose a great donor supplies immeasurable beings for a full eighty years with whatever they desire. Seeing their aged appearance, white hair, wrinkled faces, sparse teeth, and withered bodies, the donor thinks, ‘Their death is near; I should now teach them so that they attain the fruit of the Way.’ The donor skillfully teaches the real Dharma of nirvāṇa: ‘The world is insecure, like water, foam, bubbles, or a mirage. All of you should swiftly give rise to a mind of disenchantment.’ Hearing this Dharma, they all attain arhatship and fully possess the six supernormal powers, three knowledges, and eight liberations” | T09n0262 〔0047a28–0047b08〕 | 0139b10–0139b12 |
tr. “The final fiftieth person hears one verse and joyfully accepts it; that person’s blessing surpasses the donor’s and cannot be expressed by simile. The blessing of hearing in succession is already immeasurable—how much more the first person in the Dharma assembly who hears and rejoices?” | T09n0262 〔0047b09–0047b12〕 | 0139b11–0139b12 |
tr. “If one encourages and leads a person to hear the Lotus, saying that this sutra is profound and wondrous, hard to encounter through thousands of myriads of kalpas, and the person accepts the teaching, goes, and hears for even a moment, I will now distinguish that blessing and recompense. In life after life there will be no ailment of the mouth; the teeth will not be sparse, yellow, or black; the lips will not be thick, retracted, or damaged and will have no repellent mark; the tongue will not be dry, black, or short; the nose will be high, long, and straight; the forehead broad, level, and straight; the face and eyes dignified and pleasing to others; the breath without foulness, while the fragrance of an utpala flower constantly issues from the mouth” | T09n0262 〔0047b13–0047b22〕 | 0139b13–0139b14 |
tr. “If one intentionally goes to a monastery wishing to hear the Lotus Sutra and hears for a moment with joy, I will now state the blessing. Later born among devas or humans, one gains wondrous elephants, horses, vehicles, jeweled carriages and litters, and rides in heavenly palaces” | T09n0262 〔0047b23–0047b26〕 | 0139b14 |
tr. “If where Dharma is taught one encourages another to sit and hear the sutra, through these causes and conditions of blessing one gains the seat of Śakra, Brahmā, or a wheel-turning king” | T09n0262 〔0047b27–0047b28〕 | 0139b14–0139b15 |
tr. “‘How much more one who single-mindedly hears, explains its meaning and intent, and practices as taught? That blessing cannot be measured’” | T09n0262 〔0047b29–0047c01〕 | 0139b15–0139b16 |
B. Joyful Acceptance in the Great Prajñāpāramitā
The root treatise gives only a brief question and answer: 「問:此與《大品》隨喜云何? tr. “Question: how does this relate to joyful acceptance in the Great Prajñāpāramitā? Answer: here the Dharma is adduced, there the person; person and Dharma are mutually adduced” 〔T34n1718 0138c19–0138c20〕. The Wenjuji introduces it as 「「彼人」者,《大品》云:「若聲聞人能發心者,我亦隨喜。」」 tr. “‘There, the person’ means that the Great Prajñāpāramitā says, ‘If a śrāvaka can bring forth resolve, I too rejoice’” 〔T34n1719 0345a05–0345a06〕.
tr. “Divine sons, if one enters the fixed stage of a śrāvaka, that person cannot bring forth the resolve for unsurpassed complete awakening. Why? Because it creates a barrier against birth and death. If that person brings forth the resolve for unsurpassed complete awakening, I too rejoice. Why? A superior person should seek an even higher Dharma; I will never cut off that person’s qualities” 〔0273b29–0273c05〕. The explanatory text in T25n1509 reads: 「諸天子! tr. “Divine sons! If one enters the fixed stage of a śrāvaka, that person cannot bring forth the resolve for unsurpassed complete awakening. Why? Because it creates a barrier against birth and death. If that person brings forth the resolve for unsurpassed complete awakening, I too rejoice. Why? A superior person should seek an even higher Dharma; I will never cut off that person’s qualities” 〔0442c05–0442c09〕. The brief citation and the received long sentences are recorded side by side without adjudicating abbreviation, version, or interpretation.
C. Root-Treatise Similes Cross-Read with Received Sutras and Treatises

| Five hundred yojanas | 「通教人修因雖巧,發心不識五百由旬」 tr. “Though those of the Shared Teaching skillfully cultivate the cause, at initial resolve they do not recognize the five hundred yojanas” 〔T34n1718 0138c15〕 | Root sutra: 「譬如五百由旬險難惡道,曠絕無人、怖畏之處。」 tr. “Suppose there is a dangerous and difficult evil road five hundred yojanas long, desolate, without people, and terrifying” 〔T09n0262 0025c26–0025c28〕; also 「於險道中過三百由旬,化作一城」 tr. “after passing three hundred yojanas on the dangerous road, he conjures a city” 〔0026a04–0026a05〕 | This marks only a same-sutra cross-reading and does not present the root treatise’s judgment as the sutra’s words |
| A and Cha | 「佛今舉阿以況後茶都勝諸教」 tr. “The Buddha now adduces A to compare with the later Cha; both surpass the various teachings” 〔T34n1718 0138c17–0138c18〕 | Earlier in this work: 「初阿字門,具四十一字功德,後茶亦具諸字功德,中間亦爾,字等、語等、功德亦等。」 tr. “The initial gateway of the letter A possesses the qualities of the other forty-one letters; the final Cha likewise possesses the qualities of all the letters, and those between are the same. The letters, words, and qualities are equal” 〔T34n1718 0022b03–0022b04〕. The Great Prajñāpāramitā: 「一字皆入四十二字,四十二字亦入一字。」 tr. “Each single letter enters all forty-two letters, and all forty-two letters enter each single letter” 〔T08n0223 0396b24–0396b25〕 | The correspondence to forty-two stages and the six identities belongs to the Mirror |
| Brahmā blessing | 「今更廣之,滿閻浮人福,不及西瞿耶尼一人福」 tr. “It is now explained further: the blessing of all people filling Jambudvīpa does not equal that of one person in Aparagodānīya” 〔T34n1718 0139a11–0139a12〕 | The Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom: 「有人於先無佛塔國土中,修立塔廟,得梵福德,梵名無量福德」 tr. “If in a land previously without a buddha-stūpa someone builds a stūpa-shrine, that person gains Brahmā blessing; Brahmā means immeasurable blessing” 〔T25n1509 0309a26–0309a27〕 | The Record identifies the material used as the Great Treatise; only the locatable received passage is set beside it |
| Four blessings | 「散者無塔處作塔,塔壞者治之,和合僧眾請轉法輪,眾散者還合之是為四福」 tr. “The dispersed blessings are building a stūpa where none exists, repairing a damaged stūpa, harmonizing the saṅgha and requesting it to turn the Dharma wheel, and reuniting a dispersed assembly; these are the four blessings” 〔T34n1718 0139a17–0139a18〕 | The Ekottarika Āgama: 「今當說四梵之福。 “I will now explain the four Brahmā blessings. What are the four?” 〔T02n0125 0656b01–0656b02〕; the extensive comparison concludes, 「計從四天下至他化自在天之福,故不如一梵天王之福。」 tr. “Reckoning the blessings from the four continents through the Heaven of Mastery over Others’ Transformations, they do not equal the blessing of one Brahmā king” 〔0656c02–0656c03〕 | The four items and their order differ between the two texts; both are recorded without altering the root treatise |

IV. Essential Explanations from the Wenjuji [the Mirror]
Zhanran reads the four conclusions of the chapter title as the four siddhāntas: 「釋品題中四重結名,亦四悉意但不次第,理須消釋使義相當」 tr. “The four conclusions of the chapter title also have the meaning of the four siddhāntas, though not in sequence; they must be explained so that the meanings correspond” 〔T34n1719 0344a08–0344a09〕. This is Mirror exegesis, not four columns explicitly listed by Zhizhe in this chapter.
Concerning acceptance and joy, the Record says 「初釋隨中事理秖是權實異名,了此權實即非權實故無二無別」 tr. “In the initial explanation of acceptance, events and principle are merely alternate names for provisional and real. Understanding provisional and real as not provisional and real, they are therefore nondual and undifferentiated” 〔0344a21–0344a22〕. It also says 「以自聞經復能教他,故悲智具足方乃名喜」 tr. “Because one personally hears the sutra and can also teach others, only with compassion and wisdom complete is it called joy” 〔0344b01–0344b02〕. Zhizhe’s root text directly states conforming to events and principle, rejoicing for self and others, and wisdom and compassion; the additional correspondences to provisional/real and compassion/wisdom must be attributed to the Mirror.
For the fiftieth person, the Record opens the division with 「「第五十人」下釋為人,中四:初重牒人相即是牒位」 tr. “Beginning with ‘the fiftieth person’ explains the person in four parts; first, reiterating the person’s characteristics, which is reiterating the stage” 〔0344c07–0344c08〕. It then explains slight practice and great qualities through 「於校量中又三:初明行薄,隨中但理未有權用,喜中但己未能益他」 tr. “The measure again has three: first, explaining that the practice is slight. In acceptance there is only principle and not yet provisional function; in joy there is only oneself and no ability yet to benefit others” 〔0344c10–0344c11〕. The source pointer for Haojian and kalaviṅka reads 「好堅迦陵具如《止觀》第一第七記」 tr. “The Haojian and kalaviṅka are fully explained in the first and seventh records of the Great Calming and Contemplation” 〔0344c24–0344c25〕.
Concerning divergent interpretations of the fifty people, Zhanran evaluates the southern account: 「文雖未破理不全然,但依漸劣以後況初,何用平勝?」 tr. “Though the text does not refute them, their principle is not entirely so. It need only follow gradual inferiority and use the later to reveal the first; what use are equality and superiority?” 〔0345a20–0345a21〕. Of the root treatise’s first calculation he says it 「暫寄教門以立人數」 tr. “provisionally relies on teaching gateways to establish the number of people” 〔0345a23–0345a24〕; of the second, 「此亦一往合其數耳」 tr. “this too only provisionally fits the number” 〔0345b09–0345b10〕. These limiting expressions belong to the Mirror.
The Record explicitly marks the authorship layer of the itemized fifty qualities: 「此中功德對五十人,章安但直標數而已,不指經文。 “Here these qualities correspond to fifty people. Zhang’an merely marked the number and did not point to the sutra text. I now correlate them briefly, combining every two qualities into one phrase” 〔0345c10–0345c11〕. Its twenty-five phrases then follow in order:
Born in one place and sharp faculties; wisdom and not mute; fragrant mouth and healthy tongue; healthy mouth and unstained teeth; neither black nor yellow; neither sparse nor missing; neither uneven nor crooked; lips neither drooping nor retracted; neither contracted nor rough; neither ulcerated nor rash-covered; neither damaged nor broken; neither askew nor thick; neither large nor dark; neither black nor repellent; neither flat nor crooked; neither black nor narrow; neither long nor hollow; neither distorted nor displeasing; beautiful lips and tongue; beautiful gums and teeth; nose long and high; full face and high brows; long brows and broad forehead; level and straight with complete human marks; seeing the Buddha and hearing the Dharma 〔T34n1719 0345c12–0345c24〕. This list belongs to Zhanran’s Mirror exegesis and is not relabeled as Zhizhe’s own itemization.
V. Explanations of Various Masters
The root treatise actually records two ancient sets of explanations concerning the fifty people; both must remain:
First, the southern account: 「南方解五十人為三:一、展轉勝,二、展轉平,三、展轉劣。 tr. “The southern tradition explains the fifty people in three ways: first, successively superior; second, successively equal; third, successively inferior. The superior are hard to find, the equal likewise rare, while the inferior are closer to this. Measuring with the inferior reveals the equal and superior” 〔T34n1718 0138c24–0138c26〕. The root treatise does not immediately refute this sentence by sentence; Zhanran’s separate Mirror evaluation appears above.
Second, the northern account: 「北方人解,最初妙覺為第十地人說,十地人為第九地人說,如是展轉至于十信,格後況初。」 tr. “The northern tradition explains that one at wondrous awakening first teaches a person of the tenth ground, the tenth-ground person teaches one of the ninth, and so in succession down to the ten trusts, using the later to reveal the first” 〔T34n1718 0138c26–0138c28〕. The root treatise immediately says 「今謂不爾」 tr. “I now say this is not so” 〔0138c28〕 because 「後非十信之始,初非妙覺之終,何用此解?」 tr. “the last is not the beginning of the ten trusts and the first not the end of wondrous awakening; what use is this explanation?” 〔0139a01–0139a02〕. It then establishes two calculations, horizontally through fourfold assemblies of the teachings and directly through the Perfect Teaching.
Within the strict domain there are no markers such as “someone says,” “some say,” “the old account,” “explainers differ,” “one account,” or “a master says.” The actual divergent-interpretation markers here are southern and northern. The root treatise’s 「私謂勸人聽法」 tr. “the private record says concerning encouraging another to hear the Dharma” 〔0139a29〕 begins a distinct private record and must preserve its authorship layer rather than being grouped with the two ancient interpretations.
VI. Terminology
| Term | Minimum explicitly stated by the root treatise | Layer boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Acceptance | Conforming to events and principle; also conforming to principle and events, ultimately nondual and undifferentiated | Correspondence to the four siddhāntas and alternate naming as provisional/real belongs to the Mirror |
| Joy | Rejoicing for oneself and others; rejoicing for oneself entails wisdom and for others compassion | Correspondence of joy to wisdom/severance and others’ liberation belongs to the Mirror |
| Profound and distant Origin | Hearing the Buddha’s profound and distant Origin and trusting without opposition | Long transformation as vertical and extensive transformation as horizontal belongs to the Mirror |
| Beginning of the first grade | The root treatise’s placement of the fiftieth person | Detailed classification through four trusts and five grades belongs to the Mirror |
| Outward practice | Contrasted with one thought of understanding and rejoicing for self and others | No practice absent from the root text is supplied |
| Inward joyful acceptance and outward hearing | The two divisions of the Buddha’s answer | No added psychological or social classification is invented |
| Lesser seven and greater seven | Components of the calculation made directly through the Perfect gateway | “Provisionally fitting the number” is the Mirror’s limiting expression |
| Brahmā blessing, noble blessing, embodied-noble blessing, and sattva blessing | The root treatise’s original names in its chain of measurement | Compound names are preserved without arbitrary division or merger |
| Before the semblant stage | The private record’s placement of the qualities in this passage | Relating the five grades through the Contemplation of Samantabhadra belongs to the Mirror |
VII. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
The Haojian tree remains underground while its shoot already measures a hundred spans; the kalaviṅka remains in the shell while its voice already surpasses all other birds. The root treatise uses both similes to resolve the assembly’s doubt that the initial mind is weak; no other imagery need be added. Cross-read with the root sutra, the fiftieth person still merely hears one verse in succession and joyfully accepts it, while the first person in the assembly is revealed through the later person. Simile and measure point in the same direction: though practice is slight, what is gained is not slight.
The five hundred yojanas continue the same-sutra simile from “The Parable of the Conjured City,” while A and Cha cross-read with this work’s forty-two letters. Both occur in the root treatise’s comparison of initial and later minds. Cross-reading serves only to clarify the scriptural background selected by the root treatise and does not rewrite a root-sutra simile into a judgment that the treatise did not make.
The Brahmā-blessing passage moves from worldly pleasure and resultant suffering to nirvāṇa’s pleasure and the suffering of birth and death, then lists meditative and dispersed blessing, four blessings, noble blessing, and two sattva blessings, ending with the blessing of initial joyful acceptance on hearing the Lotus Sutra. Carried forward into the four topics on hearing, qualities are tied not only to personally going to hear but to yielding a seat, encouraging another, and hearing fully and practicing. From inward joyful acceptance to outward hearing, encouraging, and practice, the sequence unfolds through this chapter’s own sutra text.
VIII. Placement of the Editions
A. Nine Strict-Domain Readings Between 【Taishō】 and 【Edition A】
| Line anchor | 【Taishō】 | 【Edition A】 | Short context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0138b22 | 之 | Absent in Edition A | without the least 之 doubt or obstruction |
| 0138b23 | 該 | 說 | horizontally and vertically 該 pervading |
| 0138b26 | 無 | Absent in Edition A | 無 nondual and undifferentiated |
| 0138c10 | 芽 | 牙 | the 芽 shoot already measures a hundred spans |
| 0139a16 | 釋 | 帝釋 | the Four Great Kings do not equal one 釋 Śakra |
| 0139a25 | 福 | Absent in Edition A | embodied-noble 福 blessing does not equal |
| 0139b04 | 是 | Absent in Edition A | sharp faculties and wisdom 是 are qualities of mind |
| 0139b10 | 三 | 為三 | 三 three within joyful acceptance |
| 0139b11 | 人 | Absent in Edition A | beginning with the final 人 person |
All nine are linked from body start/end anchors to postposed <app> notes. The domain has no shared-asterisk corresp note. An empty reading is not absent data; the table explicitly marks it “Absent in Edition A.” The chapter-title line has a separate postposed title note, 「法華文句卷第十首【甲】」 tr. “heading of fascicle ten of the Fahua Wenju [Edition A],” targeting 〔0138b17〕, but no body start/end <app>; it is therefore not mixed into the nine.
B. Transmitted Inline Notes and Gaiji
The chapter has two inline notes, both 〔云云〕 tr. “[and so forth]”: one in 「具聽修行〔云云〕」 tr. “hearing fully and practicing [and so forth]” 〔T34n1718 0139b08〕 and one in 「頌修行〔云云〕」 tr. “the verse recapitulates practice [and so forth]” 〔0139b16〕. Both preserve the annotation layer and are neither expanded nor flattened away.
The chapter’s gaiji is 「㲉」 tr. “shell” 〔T34n1718 0138c11〕, encoded as CB00592, composed 〔穀-禾+卵〕 and represented in Unicode by U+3C89. The reader layer preserves 㲉 and does not normalize it to 殼. The Wenjuji separately has 「䵩」 tr. “dark” 〔T34n1719 0345c18〕, encoded as CB03054 with normalized form 黧. The root sutra separately has 「𤦲」 tr. “giant clamshell” 〔T09n0262 0046c11〕 and 「㔸」 tr. “flat” 〔0047a16〕; each text retains its own graph.
C. Page-Anchor Convention
This edition’s source places a single paragraph-opening anchor only at page changes. The opening page anchor of the unit is 〔T34 0138b17〕 and the next page anchor 〔T34 0139b08〕. Exact quotation anchors in the apparatus instead follow the nearest Taishō line marker preceding the quotation’s first character; a page-change anchor in the reader source cannot replace them. Ranged quotations begin at the actual line of the first character and close at that of the final character. Where a line marker occurs inside an inline note, whether it belongs to the visible stream of the body must still be determined first.
