〔T34 0117a29〕
心要Essence

Someone insults you.

The sound stopped long ago. By the time the second word was spoken, the first had already vanished. Yet your mind joins the two words together again, then again, then once more. The other person said them only once; you repeat them on their behalf throughout the night.

The Wenju asks directly: one word alone cannot yet constitute an insult; only two words can. When the latter word appears, the former has ceased. The person who insults and the person insulted likewise pass away in the same instant. If so, what now clings so tightly to the mind—is it still that sentence, or is it the mind refusing to let the sentence pass?

This does not ask you to pretend that you were not hurt. The bodhisattvas in this chapter know that abuse, blades and staves, slander, and expulsion lie ahead, yet they still say they will put on the robe of forbearance. Armor is not numbness. Armor means that when pain comes, you no longer cast that pain into the next arrow that wounds another.

Forbearance therefore begins by changing how one sees.

When you see someone whose bodily conduct is wholesome but whose speech and thought are unwholesome, be like one who takes a clean corner from a rag in a dung heap. When you see purity in speech or thought, be like one who parts the grass and scoops up water, or bends down to drink the little clear water in an ox’s hoofprint. If all three modes of someone’s conduct are impure, do not hurry to erase that person from the world. Be as when meeting someone gravely ill on the road: first wish that they may encounter a good spiritual friend, that their three modes of conduct may be healed, and that they may not fall into evil paths. If you meet someone wholly pure, be as though entering a cool pond filled with flowers, allowing that person’s purity to reflect your own shortcomings.

You need not call evil good, and you need not let evil occupy the whole of a person.

At a deeper level, turn back and look at yourself. Śāriputra says that his mind is like earth, water, fire, and wind, receiving both clean and unclean things; it is also like a broom, sweeping both purity and filth. He also sees the impurities constantly leaking from his own nine apertures. When you see only another person’s dirt, it is easiest to imagine yourself spotless. Once you see that you too leak and also need to be swept, retaliation no longer appears so self-evidently righteous.

In this chapter the Buddha gives no spoken command; he merely looks toward the bodhisattvas. From the teachings already given and that present glance, they know what they are to do, and so they vow to propagate the sutra.

Perhaps true reception and upholding lies here: when no one compels you, still not letting anger rule on your behalf; when no one puts the armor on you, still remembering the Buddha’s injunction; when a cruel word falls, not extending it into a second arrow.

The sound has ceased. You need not keep speaking it for the other person.

Plain reading

I. Why Does the Chapter Title Include Both Upholding and Exhortation to Uphold?

Twenty thousand bodhisattvas propagate this sutra in obedience to the Buddha’s command, so the chapter is called “Upholding.” The Buddha again exhorts eighty myriads of koṭis of nayutas of bodhisattvas to propagate the sutra, so it is also called “Exhortation to Uphold.”

Question: Why is the meaning divided into these two levels?

Answer: The twenty thousand bodhisattvas are the number that received a specific injunction at the beginning of “Dharma Teacher,” and so now receive and uphold the sutra in obedience to that command. The eighty myriads of koṭis of nayutas of bodhisattvas had not previously received a specific injunction; they had only been included in the general search for propagators. The Buddha now looks toward them, causing them to vow to propagate this sutra in this land. The verification provided by their propagation reveals the gravity of the Buddha’s intent and the solicitude of his exhortation. They propagate because they have received that exhortation, and so the chapter title has these two meanings.

II. First Receiving and Upholding, Then Exhorting to Uphold

The main text is divided into two large sections: first receiving and upholding, then exhorting to uphold.

Receiving and upholding has three parts. First, twenty thousand bodhisattvas obey the command and uphold the sutra in this land. Second, five hundred arhats and eight thousand śrāvakas in training and beyond training vow to circulate it in other lands. Third, the bhikṣuṇīs request predictions.

Question: Since these śrāvakas have already become great beings, why can they not propagate the sutra in this land?

Answer: This guides bodhisattvas who have newly generated resolve and only begun to practice; they are not yet able to undergo hardship and propagate the sutra in an evil age. At the same time, this question and answer opens the following chapter, “Peaceful Practices.”

III. Why Does the Buddha Only Look at the Bodhisattvas without Giving a Spoken Injunction?

The second large section, exhortation to uphold, has prose and verse. The prose consists of five actions occurring in sequence: first, the Buddha looks toward the bodhisattvas; second, they inwardly hope that he will give an injunction; third, the Buddha remains silent; fourth, the bodhisattvas understand his intent; fifth, they vow to propagate the sutra.

The Buddha silently exhorts them with his gaze but gives no further spoken injunction because, although he had not previously issued a specific command to this great body of bodhisattvas, he had already fully set forth the profound merit of upholding the sutra and had made its verification clear. Many Jewels Buddha and the emanation buddhas had moreover come from afar to exhort them. This solicitude in both event and meaning was sufficient. Anyone willing to accept the charge should immediately make the vow without troubling the Buddha to speak again. The Buddha also protects the śrāvakas’ vow to propagate the sutra in other lands and therefore does not praise another course in explicit words.

There are twenty lines of verse, all requesting protection in upholding this sutra. The root treatise does not further divide every sentence, and readers can understand them by following the text. The twenty lines nevertheless have four fixed divisions: the first seventeen describe propagating the sutra while clothed in the robe of forbearance; the next one describes entering the Tathāgata’s chamber to propagate it; the next describes sitting upon the Tathāgata’s seat to propagate it; and the final line concludes the vow and requests the Buddha’s aid. The numbers are exactly seventeen, one, one, and one, and their order is not interchangeable.

IV. Dwelling in an Araṇya Is Not Merely Dwelling in Seclusion

The root treatise cites Fascicle Six of the Madhyamāgama: “araṇya” is rendered in Chinese as “free from affairs,” and “dhūta” as “shaking off.”

It also cites Fascicle Six of the Ratnamegha Sutra: when a bhikṣu dwelling in an araṇya sees a king, prince, brahman, or any other person arrive, he should greet them by saying: “Welcome; please sit here.” If the visitor sits, the bhikṣu sits with them. If the visitor does not sit, neither should the bhikṣu sit first. He should teach the visitor the Dharma and cause them to rejoice.

In the latter, evil age after the Buddha’s extinction there will be bhikṣus who do not conform to the proper form of renunciation. Although they make their living by preaching the precepts, they do not delight in practicing them. Extending this through the fivefold dharma-body, the same applies to every other Dharma of the path: they speak but do not practice. This is like a person with a blocked nose discussing sandalwood fragrance while possessing no fragrance and being unable to smell it. Devas, humans, nāgas, spirits, and kumbhāṇḍas will never make offerings to a person without precepts; the same may be said of the other four factors. No one can bring the wondrous Dharma out of nowhere. It must arise from pure precepts, and so too with the remaining four factors.

V. When the Pain of Illness Arrives, Where Does the Armor Arise?

If someone encounters the gravest illness at the point of death, with pain and distress pressing closely upon them and no recovery at all, yet constantly does not abandon the samādhi of recollecting the Buddha—even if every pain presses so fiercely that it nearly seizes the mind—because that person understands this Dharma, they can know that all dharmas are empty.

In explaining “the armor of forbearance,” the root treatise first cites a passage from Fascicle Five of the Madhyamāgama. Bhikṣu Black Teeth complains to the Buddha: “Śāriputra insulted and censured me.” The Buddha immediately summons Śāriputra and asks: “Did you truly insult and censure him?”

Śāriputra answers: “A person whose mind is unstable may insult and censure others; my mind is settled, so how could I do so? I am like an ox whose horns have been broken off and that no longer gores others; or like a child with bodily impairments who, out of shame, does not trouble others. My mind is like earth, water, fire, and wind: it receives clean and unclean things, urine and feces, nasal mucus and saliva, without giving rise to abuse. My mind is also like a broom, sweeping away both purity and impurity; or like a broken vessel filled with fat and placed in sunlight, continually leaking drop by drop. Contemplating the impurities that constantly flow from the nine apertures of my own body, how could I insult and censure another? I am also like a clean child around whose neck dead snakes, dead dogs, and other such things are bound: the child feels shame and remorse but does not insult or censure another.”

The Buddha then asks: “When you encounter such an evil person, how do you contemplate them?”

Śāriputra answers: People are of five kinds, each of which must be contemplated.

The first kind has wholesome bodily conduct but unwholesome verbal and mental conduct. Recollect only the bodily good and not the verbal and mental evil. This is like a bhikṣu wearing robes made from discarded rags who sees a torn cloth in a dung heap, grasps it with the left hand, spreads it open with the right, cuts away the impure part, and takes only the clean part. Contemplate a person in the same way: take the purity of their bodily conduct to correct your own body, while setting aside their unwholesome speech and thought as an admonition to your own.

The second kind has pure verbal conduct but impure bodily and mental conduct. Recollect only the purity of speech and set aside the impurity of body and thought. This is like a person parched by heat who finds a pond thick with grass, parts the grass, scoops up water to drink, cools the body, and quenches thirst.

The third kind has pure mental conduct but impure bodily and verbal conduct. Recollect only the purity of thought and do not take the impurity of body and speech. This is like a traveler parched by heat who finds only a little water in an ox’s hoofprint. Scooping it with the hands would muddy it, and so the traveler kneels on both knees, braces both hands against the ground, and drinks directly with the mouth to dispel heat and thirst.

The fourth kind is wholly impure in bodily, verbal, and mental conduct. Although there is no goodness to take, one should still feel profound compassion. This is like seeing an ill person on the road and placing them securely. One should wish that this impure person may meet a good spiritual friend, heal the three modes of conduct, and not fall into the three evil paths.

The fifth kind is wholly pure in bodily, verbal, and mental conduct. One should continually recollect this person, use them to train oneself, and aspire to become their equal. This is like a cool pond filled with many flowers and plants: a person parched by heat enters it and body and mind revive. Continually recollecting such a pure condition can remove one’s own evil.

The root treatise says that these are the forms of armor in the Tripiṭaka Teaching, using suffering, impermanence, impurity, not-self, and emptiness as armor.

VI. How Can a Single Insult Be Taken Apart until Nothing Graspable Remains?

The root treatise next cites Fascicle Eight of the Vibhāṣā and presents seven contemplations for facing an insult.

First, what is called “insult” is only one particular linguistic meaning; the remainder is merely the sound of calling. Even if there were only calling sounds throughout the day, what would that have to do with me?

Second, the same phrase is base speech in this region but praise in another. If I cling only to the base meaning here, I will find no happiness wherever I go.

Third, contemplate the graphs that compose the insult. Reverse their order and the insult may become praise.

Fourth, an insult is only a small part of one element, a small part of one sense field, and a small part of one aggregate. Little is insulted, while much remains uninsulted.

Fifth, ask who accomplishes the insult. The insulter accomplishes it, and that accomplishment is on the other side. What does it have to do with me?

Sixth, a single graph cannot yet constitute an insult; two graphs are required, yet no one can utter both in the same instant. By the time the latter graph is spoken, the former has already ceased.

Seventh, even if the person who insults and the person insulted confront one another at the same time, both cease together within the same instant. What does this have to do with me?

Contemplating in this way is using emptiness as armor.

VII. When Ordinary People and Sages Both Suffer, Where Does the Difference Lie?

The root treatise next cites “the seventeenth”: ordinary people and sages both experience painful, pleasant, and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. How do they differ?

When ordinary people face painful feeling, they undergo two kinds of pain: bodily suffering and grief and sorrow in the mind, as if struck by three poisoned arrows. Losing pleasure produces anger, obtaining pleasure produces delight, and encountering neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling produces delusion.

Sages have only painful bodily feeling, without grief or sorrow in the mind. They are not angry at pain, do not crave pleasure, and are not deluded by neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. The three compulsions of anger, craving, and delusion cannot drive them; instead, they are liberated from those bonds. This is the difference between ordinary people and sages.

Contemplating the presence, absence, and differing degrees of the three feelings in ordinary people and sages is what the root treatise calls the armor of the Distinct Teaching.

VIII. Why Can One Armor Be All Armor?

The armor taught in the present sutra is recollection of the Buddha as armor. What this recollection apprehends is the dharma-buddha and ultimate meaning. The Buddha is the Dharma, so the scripture’s recollection of the Buddha’s injunction is also recollection of the Dharma. The Buddha is also the Saṅgha, and the Saṅgha is harmony in both phenomena and principle. Vairocana pervades all places.

This armor is therefore not an isolated suit of armor: one armor is all armor. The root treatise uses this to explain the armor of the Perfect Teaching.

義疏Exposition

At the point of exhorting others to uphold the Lotus Sutra, the most powerful scene is not a command but silence. The Buddha merely looks toward eighty myriads of koṭis of nayutas of bodhisattvas. They first hope to receive an injunction; seeing that the Buddha remains silent, they finally understand his intent and make the vow themselves.

That glance and that vow precisely illuminate the depth of “upholding.” To receive and uphold is not to keep a scroll in one’s hands. It is to remain willing, even when no one urges one on, to carry the Dharma entrusted by the Buddha into an evil age. Following only the root treatise’s own words, we will see how this undertaking unfolds from the chapter title into the robe of forbearance, contemplation of mind, and one armor that is all armor.

I. Why Is the Same Propagation Called Both Upholding and Exhortation to Uphold?

The root treatise does not treat the two chapter titles as mutually exclusive alternatives. Twenty thousand bodhisattvas had already received a specific injunction and now propagate the sutra in obedience to it; from their side, the chapter is called “Upholding.” The eighty myriads of koṭis of nayutas of bodhisattvas had previously been included only in the general search for propagators; now the Buddha silently exhorts them with his gaze, and they vow to propagate the sutra. From their side it is called “Exhortation to Uphold.”

The difference lies not in the sutra upheld but in the conditions under which its charge is received. On one side, an earlier injunction has already been given and is now carried out. On the other, the Buddha says nothing further, yet the bodhisattvas hear the unspoken entrustment within all his earlier exhortations and his present glance. The former shows that an injunction once received is not forgotten; the latter, that one sees the intent and immediately undertakes it. Together they show that “upholding” is neither passive obedience nor arbitrary self-appointment, but remembering, understanding, and responding to the Buddha’s intent.

II. Having Become Great Beings, Why Do They Still Propagate the Sutra in Other Lands?

The section on reception and upholding first lists twenty thousand bodhisattvas who uphold the sutra in this land, then five hundred arhats and eight thousand śrāvakas in training and beyond training who circulate it in other lands, and finally gathers together the nuns’ request for predictions. An arresting question follows at once: since these śrāvakas have become great beings, why can they not propagate the sutra in this land?

The root treatise’s answer does not negate their vow. It says that their choice can also guide bodhisattvas who have newly generated resolve and only begun to practice. Beginners are not yet able to undergo hardship and propagate the sutra in an evil age; the root treatise therefore attends here to the path they can presently bear, and expressly says that this question and answer also opens the next chapter, “Peaceful Practices.”

There is compassion here that does not coerce. The twenty thousand bodhisattvas uphold the sutra in this land, while the five hundred and eight thousand śrāvakas circulate it in other lands; neither group cancels the other. For the Dharma to spread, some must enter hardship directly and others must continue the wisdom-life elsewhere. A shared vow to propagate the sutra does not require everyone to stand in the same place.

III. Why Is the Buddha’s Silence Itself Sufficient Exhortation?

The five actions in the prose section on exhortation cannot be collapsed into one sentence. First the Buddha looks at them. The bodhisattvas inwardly ask for an injunction. The Buddha remains silent. The bodhisattvas then understand his intent. Only afterward do they vow to propagate the sutra. If their request for an injunction is prematurely rewritten as a vow, the silence between the two disappears, and with it the way silence ripens into undertaking.

The Buddha does not cease speaking because nothing remains to be said. The root treatise looks back over what has already occurred: the profound merit of upholding this sutra has been fully set forth, and its verification made clear; Many Jewels Buddha and the emanation buddhas have also come from afar to exhort the assembly. The intent to inspire is already filling the scene. Those willing to accept the charge should now vow of their own accord, without requiring the Buddha to repeat the command. The Buddha also protects the śrāvakas’ vow to propagate the sutra in other lands and therefore does not overwhelm their choice by praising another course in explicit words.

That glance is therefore not a secret signal, nor is the silence a test. What truly enables the bodhisattvas to understand is the Buddha’s solicitous intent accumulated throughout the preceding teaching. Layer by layer he has already placed before the assembly why the sutra must be upheld, who has come to verify it, and how weighty the matter is. Their vow answers that entire course of instruction.

IV. After Putting On the Robe of Forbearance, One Must Still Enter the Chamber and Sit upon the Seat

Of the twenty lines of verse, the first seventeen describe propagating the sutra while clothed in the robe of forbearance. The final three then describe, in order, entering the chamber, sitting upon the seat, and concluding with a request for aid. This sequence prevents forbearance from becoming isolated, grim endurance.

The robe of forbearance faces abuse, blades and staves, slander, contempt, expulsion, and removal from stūpas and monasteries. Propagators do not say they can endure because they do not know pain. They know clearly what they will meet and still consent to bear it in order to protect what the Buddha entrusted. Yet if there is forbearance without entering the chamber, endurance can contract into self-enclosure; if there is forbearance without sitting upon the seat, a wounded mind can turn even its preaching of Dharma into retaliation.

After the seventeen lines, one therefore still enters the chamber: wherever someone seeks the Dharma in village or town, one goes there and teaches the Dharma entrusted by the Buddha. One also sits upon the seat: as the World-Honored One’s envoy, fearless within the assembly and able to teach the Dharma well. Only then, before the World-Honored One and the buddhas who have come from the ten directions, is the vow concluded and the Buddha asked to know their minds. The robe of forbearance protects propagators from retreating before evil conditions; entering the chamber keeps them moving toward sentient beings; sitting upon the seat keeps their teaching of the Dharma from being lost within the assembly.

V. Why Is Preaching Precepts without Practicing Them Like a Person with a Blocked Nose Discussing Sandalwood?

The root treatise cites araṇya as “free from affairs” and dhūta as “shaking off.” It then cites the way a resident of an araṇya receives visitors: when someone comes, invite them to sit; if they do not sit, do not sit down first; teach them the Dharma and cause them to rejoice. A place of seclusion is not separation from people, and practice is not merely protecting an image of one’s own purity.

For this very reason, the root treatise immediately turns to a bhikṣu who does not conform to the proper form. He lives by preaching the precepts but does not delight in practicing them. This breach between speech and conduct extends to the other factors of the fivefold dharma-body. A person with a blocked nose can discuss sandalwood yet possesses no fragrance and cannot smell it. Words may resemble fragrance, but a life does not thereby truly become fragrant.

The root treatise says that devas, humans, nāgas, spirits, and kumbhāṇḍas will never make offerings to a person without precepts; the wondrous Dharma likewise cannot be brought by such empty preaching, but must arise from pure precepts. This does not reduce propagation to silent self-cultivation. It requires that the Dharma spoken first be able to find a point of origin within the speaker. Otherwise, the more closely the words resemble fragrance, the more starkly they reveal that the speaker cannot smell it.

VI. Why Is the First Step of Forbearance to Turn Back and Look at Oneself?

Bhikṣu Black Teeth accuses Śāriputra of insulting and censuring him. Śāriputra does not rush to counteraccuse but uses a succession of images to describe his mind: an ox with broken horns no longer gores anyone; a mutilated child, ashamed, does not trouble others; earth, water, fire, and wind receive both purity and filth; a broom sweeps both; a broken vessel leaks fat drop by drop beneath the sun; dead snakes and dogs are bound around the neck of a clean child.

The images appear scattered, but all point in one direction. The ox with broken horns no longer injures others with its power. Earth, water, fire, wind, and the broom do not retaliate according to whether what they receive is clean or filthy. The broken vessel and the impurities continually leaking from the nine apertures turn attention from another person’s faults to one’s own impurity. The dead things bound around the neck make one first know shame.

Forbearance therefore does not begin by deciding whether another person deserves to be endured. It begins by asking whether my mind still wants to gore with its horns, whether I am willing to receive only clean things, and whether I see only another’s filth while forgetting that my own nine apertures continually leak impurity. When vision turns back toward oneself, being injured no longer automatically becomes a reason to injure.

VII. All Five Kinds of People Must Be Seen, but Not in the Same Way

The Buddha asks Śāriputra how an evil person should be contemplated. Śāriputra lists five kinds without combining or reordering them.

One whose bodily conduct is wholesome but whose speech and thought are unwholesome is like a rag in a dung heap: cut away what is impure, take only the purity of bodily conduct, and use it to correct your own body. One whose speech is pure but body and thought impure is like a pond covered in grass: part the grass, scoop up the water, take the purity of speech, and quench your thirst. One whose thought is pure but body and speech impure is like a little water in an ox’s hoofprint: do not muddy it with your hands; bend down and drink, taking only the purity of thought.

When all three modes of someone’s conduct are impure, there is no goodness to take, yet the root treatise does not tell us to abandon the person. Be as one who meets a sick person on the road: first place them securely, then earnestly wish that they may meet a good spiritual friend, heal their three modes of conduct, and not fall into the three evil paths. When all three are pure, be as one entering a cool pond filled with flowers: continually recollect that condition, use the person to train yourself, and aspire to equal them.

These five ways of seeing do not rename faults; they refuse to let faults occupy the whole person. When one portion of purity can be taken, take it to admonish yourself. When no purity can be taken, still compassionately wish for the person’s healing. When complete purity can be learned from, let that person train you. At this point forbearance is no longer merely suppressing anger. It is learning not to abandon a person even while refusing to indulge evil.

VIII. Why Can an Insult That Reaches the Ear Still Be Loosened Layer by Layer?

The root treatise next borrows seven contemplations from the Vibhāṣā. First see that “insult” is established only within a specific linguistic meaning, while the remainder is merely the sound of calling. Then see that the same expression is base speech here but may be praise elsewhere. Next, reverse the order of its graphs and the insult may become praise. Then observe that the insult occupies only a small part of an element, a sense field, and an aggregate; little is insulted, while much is not.

Pursue the question further: by whom is the insult accomplished? It is accomplished on the side of the insulter, not the one insulted. One graph alone does not yet constitute an insult; only two do. Yet when the latter graph is uttered, the former has already ceased. Even if insulter and insulted confront one another at the same time, both cease within the same instant.

These seven reconsiderations do not deny that the ear heard a sound or say that harm never occurred. They loosen the mind’s rapid solidification of a string of sounds and graphs into “there is a complete insult firmly stuck to me”. From sound, region, graph order, small portion, and the side on which accomplishment occurs, they continue through the cessation of prior and later graphs and the simultaneous cessation of subject and object. The insult is still heard, yet no longer possesses permanent power over the mind. The root treatise calls this using emptiness as armor.

IX. The Body May Suffer, but Must the Mind Be Struck by Another Arrow?

The root treatise says that ordinary people and sages both have three kinds of feeling. The difference is that when ordinary people undergo painful feeling, not only does the body suffer but grief and sorrow also arise within the mind. Losing pleasure produces anger, gaining pleasure produces delight, and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling produces delusion, as though body and mind were struck by successive poisoned arrows. Sages still have bodily feeling, but no longer add a second compulsion of anger, craving, and delusion to pain and pleasure.

This passage brings the foregoing discussion of forbearance back to the most intimate place. Abuse, blades and staves, expulsion, and grave illness are all matters of bodily feeling. Bodily feeling may not vanish immediately; the armor lies in whether the mind must extend every such feeling into anger, craving, or delusion.

The root treatise first speaks of using suffering, impermanence, impurity, not-self, and emptiness as armor; then of contemplating insults through emptiness; then of the difference between the three feelings in ordinary people and sages. In the present sutra, however, recollection of the Buddha is armor. What is recollected is the dharma-buddha and ultimate meaning. The Buddha is the Dharma; the Buddha is also the Saṅgha; the Saṅgha is harmony in both phenomena and principle; Vairocana pervades all places. Armor is therefore no longer merely something that wards off one sentence of abuse. Recollection of Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, together with facing everything one feels, are harmonized in a single thought.

This is one armor being all armor. It is not piling many suits of armor onto the body. When a single thought does not depart from the Buddha’s injunction, the robe of forbearance, entering the chamber, sitting upon the seat, teaching Dharma, undergoing suffering, and contemplating mind are no longer divided from one another. The Buddha’s glance finally becomes a suit of armor upon the practitioner’s body; the bodhisattvas’ vow causes that armor truly to enter the evil age.

Through the Eye of the Wenjuji

The Wenjuji first carries the double title one level deeper. It says: “If one wishes to establish the four siddhāntas here, the double explanation resembles the worldly siddhānta; the twenty thousand resembles the siddhānta for the person; the eighty myriads resembles counteraction; and the Buddha’s intent resembles ultimate meaning” 〔T34n1719 0314c10–0314c12〕. This does not replace the root treatise’s two explanations of the title. It sees the same “upholding” accomplish four things in the assembly at once: placing both “Upholding” and “Exhortation to Uphold” in their proper positions; enabling those already given a specific injunction to carry it out; enabling those not specifically charged to arise through exhortation; and finally disclosing together the Buddha’s intent to entrust and circulate the sutra.

For the twenty lines of verse, the Record further unfolds the root treatise’s first seventeen: one line first gives the time and the donning of the robe in general; the next nine explain what must be endured; the final seven explain the intent of donning the robe 〔T34n1719 0315a02–0315a05〕. The nine lines of what must be endured are further divided into ordinary people, overweening pride within the gate of the Way, and overweening pride that presumes sagehood. It says: “Thus, among these three, the first can be endured; the next exceeds the former; the third is most severe, because each succeeding kind becomes more difficult to recognize” 〔0315a07–0315a08〕. Harm done by someone who more closely resembles true Dharma is harder to discern. The robe of forbearance must therefore not only withstand external violence but also preserve the eye that distinguishes Dharma.

The section on the araṇya acquires another level of examination in the Record. It first distinguishes correct practice according to the sutra, then examines the bhikṣu who does not conform to the proper form through the practice of noncontention, the five factors, and the three trainings 〔0315a11–0315b10〕. This sharpens the simile of a person with a blocked nose discussing fragrance: the problem is not merely occasional insufficiency in conduct, but using the Dharma one teaches to nourish one’s own reputation and livelihood while refusing to let precepts, concentration, and wisdom correct oneself in turn. This judgment belongs to the Record and must not be written backward as though the root treatise had already named each item.

In the Record, the seven contemplations of insulting speech are joined to a still more precise contemplative method. It says: “This borrows the Vibhāṣā passage as the object contemplated, then contemplates it through four propositions and the three kinds of provisional existence, setting sound against faculty, consciousness, and emptiness to investigate its lack of own-nature” 〔T34n1719 0315c15–0315c17〕. It then examines accomplishment on the other side, one graph and two graphs, and insulter and insulted through causes and conditions, continuity, and mutual dependence respectively 〔0316a01–0316a04〕. The root treatise’s seven items are therefore not seven unrelated clever devices. They progressively loosen an apparently solid “insulting me” through its construction, continuation, and relational dependence.

The root treatise concludes only with “using emptiness as armor”; the Record then explicitly says: “‘Using emptiness’ is the Shared Teaching” 〔T34n1719 0316a04〕. It next explains the distinction between ordinary people and sages in relation to the three feelings by saying: “The four sages are sages and the six paths ordinary; the difference among the ten Dharma realms establishes the Distinct meaning” 〔0316a12–0316a13〕. In relation to the Perfect-Teaching armor, it explains recollection of the dharma-buddha by contemplating feeling as the Dharma realm 〔0316a13–0316a15〕. It finally gathers everything with: “Because the contemplator differs, the names of the various teachings are obtained; the five feelings contemplated do not differ in their characteristics” 〔0316a15–0316a16〕. The painful and pleasant feelings one faces need not have changed; what truly differs is the mind that contemplates.

This Mirror perspective returns the entire chapter to the two graphs shouchi (“receive and uphold”). Receiving is not only accepting the scripture but also every moment’s painful, pleasant, and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. Upholding is not only preserving the scripture but preventing the contemplating mind from being seized by what it receives. When what is felt remains but the contemplating mind has turned, forbearance is no longer mere endurance, and propagating the sutra is no longer merely sending words outward.

  1. 二萬菩薩奉命,在此土持經〔0117b08〕;
  2. 五百阿羅漢與八千學、無學聲聞發誓在他國流通〔0117b08–0117b09〕;

  • 折角牛不觸人、受辱童子自慚,說心已調伏而不還罵〔0117c09–0117c10〕;
  • 地、水、火、風承受淨與不淨,掃箒兼掃淨穢,說不隨所受境界生報復〔0117c10–0117c12〕;
  • 破器滴脂與自身九孔常漏、死蛇死狗繫頸,轉向自觀不淨與慚愧〔0117c12–0117c15〕;
  • 糞聚取淨帛、草池掬水、牛跡就飲、扶置病人、入清涼池,逐一對應五種人的可念與可悲憫處〔0117c16–0118a01〕;

This unit uses T34n1718, “Explanation of ‘Upholding’” 〔0117a29–0118a22〕, as the Fahua Wenju base; T09n0262, “Exhortation to Uphold the Sutra,” Chapter Thirteen 〔0035c27–0037a01〕, as the root sutra; and T34n1719, the Wenjuji 〔0314c08–0316a17〕, as the Mirror. The wording of the several texts and their received forms is recorded side by side; fascicle numbers, personal names, and variant readings are not adjudicated here.

I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement

The root treatise first explains the title through two groups of propagators. Twenty thousand bodhisattvas had already received an injunction, and so it is called 『持品』 tr. “Upholding.” The eighty myriads of koṭis of nayutas of bodhisattvas had previously been included only in the general search for propagators; now the Buddha silently exhorts them with his gaze and they vow, giving the further meaning 『勸持品』 tr. “Exhortation to Uphold” 〔0117b01–0117b06〕. The main text establishes two large divisions: first reception and upholding, then exhortation to uphold 〔0117b07〕.

Reception and upholding has three parts:

  1. Twenty thousand bodhisattvas obey the injunction and uphold the sutra in this land 〔0117b08〕;
  2. Five hundred arhats and eight thousand śrāvakas in training and beyond training vow to circulate it in other lands 〔0117b08–0117b09〕;
  3. The bhikṣuṇīs request predictions 〔0117b09〕.

“five hundred and eight thousand” designates two groups, not a single number of five hundred eight thousand. Asked why the śrāvakas do not propagate the sutra in this land, the root treatise answers that their example guides bodhisattvas newly resolved and newly practicing, who are not yet able to undergo hardship and propagate the sutra in an evil age; it also opens the next chapter, “Peaceful Practices” 〔0117b09–0117b12〕.

Exhortation to uphold is divided into prose and verse. The prose has five successive parts: the Buddha looks toward them, the bodhisattvas ask for an injunction, the Buddha remains silent, the bodhisattvas understand his intent, and they vow to propagate the sutra 〔0117b12–0117b14〕. The verse has twenty lines: seventeen on propagating the sutra while clothed in the robe of forbearance; one on entering the chamber; one on sitting upon the seat; and a final line concluding with a request for aid. The count is seventeen plus one plus one plus one, without reordering 〔0117b19–0117b22〕.

At its end, the unit unfolds four treatments through 『忍辱鎧』 tr. “the armor of forbearance.” The root treatise explicitly calls suffering, impermanence, impurity, not-self, and emptiness the armor of the Tripiṭaka Teaching; next it cites seven contemplations of insulting speech and concludes with using emptiness as armor; then it explains the Distinct-Teaching armor through the difference in the three feelings of ordinary people and sages; finally it explains the Perfect-Teaching armor through recollection of the Buddha, the dharma-buddha and ultimate meaning, the harmony of the Three Jewels, and one armor being all armor 〔0118a01–0118a22〕. In the second treatment, the root treatise says only 『用空為鎧』 tr. “using emptiness as armor” and does not itself add the name of a teaching there.

II. Formation and Transmission

The lower half of Fascicle Eight of the Fahua Wenju is titled 「妙法蓮華經文句卷第八下」 tr. “Wondrous Dharma Lotus Sutra: Words and Phrases, Fascicle Eight, Second Part” 〔T34n1718 0112c16〕; beneath it appears only 「天台智者大師說」 tr. “spoken by Great Master Zhiyi of Tiantai” 〔T34n1718 0112c18〕. Shenjiong’s preface separately records 「灌頂法師私記」 tr. “privately recorded by Dharma Master Guanding” 〔T34n1718 0001a23〕, a transmission statement for the whole work rather than the byline of this half-fascicle. The first graph of the chapter title is at 〔T34n1718 0117a29〕, the first graph of its main text at 〔T34n1718 0117b01〕, and its final text at 〔T34n1718 0118a22〕. “Peaceful Practices” begins at 〔0118a23〕.

The corresponding title in the Wenjuji is at 〔T34n1719 0314c08〕. Its explanation runs from 〔0314c09〕 through 〔0316a17〕 and ends with 「「鎧」者甲也。」 tr. “‘Armor’ means protective mail” 〔T34n1719 0316a17〕. The line at 〔0316a18〕 is the fascicle ending and does not belong to this chapter’s Mirror explanation.

The received root sutra is titled 「勸持品第十三」 tr. “‘Exhortation to Uphold the Sutra,’ Chapter Thirteen” 〔T09n0262 0035c27〕, and its text runs from 〔0035c28〕 through 〔0037a01〕. The passages below are reanchored segment by segment to the sealed chapter source in this repository; its chapter sequence corresponds one-to-one with this unit of the root treatise.

III. Sutra Passages Explained and Works Cited

A. Ten Root-Sutra Passages in This Chapter

1. Twenty Thousand Bodhisattvas Obey the Injunction and Uphold the Sutra

〔T09n0262 0035c28–0036a05〕

tr. “At that time Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Medicine King and Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Great Eloquence, together with a retinue of twenty thousand bodhisattvas, all made this vow before the Buddha: ‘World-Honored One, may you have no concern. After the Buddha’s extinction, we will receive, uphold, recite, and teach this scripture. Sentient beings in the latter evil age will have ever fewer wholesome roots, much overweening pride, greed for gain and offerings, increasing unwholesome roots, and distance from liberation. Though difficult to teach and transform, we will arouse great powers of forbearance, recite this sutra, uphold and teach it, copy it, make offerings to it in various ways, and not spare body or life.’”

The root treatise uses this to explain that the twenty thousand bodhisattvas obey the injunction to propagate the sutra and lists it first under reception and upholding 〔T34n1718 0117b01、0117b08〕.

2. Five Hundred Arhats Propagate the Sutra in Other Lands

〔T09n0262 0036a05–0036a07〕

tr. “At that time the five hundred arhats in the assembly who had received predictions said to the Buddha: ‘World-Honored One, we too make our own vow to teach this sutra extensively in other lands.’”

These five hundred arhats are the first of the two groups the root treatise calls the five hundred and eight thousand śrāvakas 〔T34n1718 0117b08–0117b09〕.

3. Eight Thousand in Training and beyond Training Propagate the Sutra in Other Lands

〔T09n0262 0036a07–0036a12〕

tr. “There were also eight thousand people in training and beyond training who had received predictions. Rising from their seats and joining their palms toward the Buddha, they made this vow: ‘World-Honored One, we too will teach this sutra extensively in other lands. Why? In this Sahā land, people are largely corrupt and evil, harbor overweening pride, possess shallow merit, and are defiled by anger, devious and crooked, and insincere in mind.’”

This is the second of the root treatise’s 『五百、八千聲聞』 tr. “five hundred and eight thousand śrāvakas” and leads into the question and answer concerning why they do not propagate the sutra in this land 〔T34n1718 0117b08–0117b12〕.

4. The Buddha’s Maternal Aunt and Six Thousand Bhikṣuṇīs Receive Predictions

〔T09n0262 0036a12–0036a24〕

tr. “At that time the Buddha’s maternal aunt, Bhikṣuṇī Mahāprajāpatī, together with six thousand bhikṣuṇīs in training and beyond training, rose from their seats, single-mindedly joined their palms, gazed up at the Honored One’s face, and did not turn their eyes away for an instant. The World-Honored One then told Gautamī: ‘Why do you look upon the Tathāgata with a sorrowful expression? Do you suppose in your mind that I have not spoken your name and given you a prediction of unsurpassed perfect awakening? Gautamī, I previously said in general that all śrāvakas had already received predictions. If you now wish to know your prediction: in a future age, you will become a great Dharma teacher within the teachings of sixty-eight thousand koṭis of buddhas, and the six thousand bhikṣuṇīs in training and beyond training will all become Dharma teachers. As you gradually perfect the bodhisattva path in this way, you will attain buddhahood, named Tathāgata Joyfully Seen by All Sentient Beings, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Awakened, Perfect in Knowledge and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Persons, Teacher of Devas and Humans, Buddha, World-Honored One. Gautamī, this Buddha Joyfully Seen by All Sentient Beings and the six thousand bodhisattvas will successively give one another predictions of unsurpassed perfect awakening.’”

The root treatise gathers this under 『諸尼請記』 tr. “the bhikṣuṇīs request predictions” and does not further divide the nuns’ internal sequence in its main text 〔T34n1718 0117b09〕.

5. Yaśodharā’s Thought

〔T09n0262 0036a24–0036a26〕

tr. “At that time Bhikṣuṇī Yaśodharā, the mother of Rāhula, thought: ‘In giving predictions, the World-Honored One alone has not spoken my name.’”

This too is included within the root treatise’s collective 『諸尼請記』 tr. “the bhikṣuṇīs request predictions” 〔T34n1718 0117b09〕.

6. Yaśodharā Receives a Prediction

〔T09n0262 0036a26–0036b02〕

tr. “The Buddha told Yaśodharā: ‘In a future age, within the teachings of hundreds of thousands of myriads of koṭis of buddhas, you will cultivate bodhisattva practice, become a great Dharma teacher, and gradually perfect the Buddha-path. In a good land you will attain buddhahood, named Tathāgata Possessing Ten Million Radiant Marks, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Awakened, Perfect in Knowledge and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Persons, Teacher of Devas and Humans, Buddha, World-Honored One. The lifespan of that buddha will be immeasurable asaṃkhyeya kalpas.’”

The root treatise still gives only the collective heading 『諸尼請記』 tr. “the bhikṣuṇīs request predictions,” without unfolding each name 〔T34n1718 0117b09〕.

7. Verses of Understanding by the Bhikṣuṇīs

The narrative begins with 「爾時摩訶波闍波提比丘尼及耶輸陀羅比丘尼,并其眷屬,皆大歡喜,得未曾有,即於佛前而說偈言:」 tr. “At that time Bhikṣuṇī Mahāprajāpatī and Bhikṣuṇī Yaśodharā, together with their retinues, all rejoiced greatly and attained what they had never had before; they then spoke verses before the Buddha” 〔T09n0262 0036b02–0036b04〕. The two verse-lines are:

LineRoot sutra, exact wordingFirst-graph locus
“World-Honored One, Guide, you bring ease to devas and humans; having heard our predictions,”0036b05
tr. “our minds are at peace and fulfilled.”0036b06

8. The Bhikṣuṇīs Propagate the Sutra in Other Lands

〔T09n0262 0036b07–0036b08〕

tr. “After speaking these verses, the bhikṣuṇīs said to the Buddha: ‘World-Honored One, we too can proclaim this sutra extensively in other lands.’”

The root treatise does not establish this vow as a separate division but continues to gather it beneath the phrase 『諸尼請記』 tr. “the bhikṣuṇīs request predictions” 〔T34n1718 0117b09〕.

9. The Prose Passage on the Eighty Myriads of Koṭis of Nayutas

〔T09n0262 0036b08–0036b19〕

tr. “At that time the World-Honored One looked toward the eighty myriads of koṭis of nayutas of bodhisattva mahāsattvas. These bodhisattvas—all irreversible, turning the irreversible Dharma wheel, and possessing dhāraṇīs—rose from their seats, went before the Buddha, single-mindedly joined their palms, and thought: ‘If the World-Honored One were to command us to uphold and teach this sutra, we would follow the Buddha’s instruction and proclaim this Dharma extensively.’” “They thought again: ‘The Buddha is now silent and gives us no injunction; what should we do?’” tr. “Then the bodhisattvas, reverently following the Buddha’s intent and also wishing to fulfill their own original vows, roared a lion’s roar before the Buddha and vowed: ‘World-Honored One, after the Tathāgata’s extinction, we will journey back and forth through worlds in the ten directions, enabling sentient beings to copy this sutra, receive and uphold it, recite it, explain its meaning, practice in accord with the Dharma, and recollect it correctly. All of this is through the Buddha’s majestic power. We only pray that the World-Honored One, while in another place, may see us from afar and protect us.’”

Each of the five prose divisions named by the root treatise can be returned to the root sutra:

B. Cross-Chapter Root-Sutra Passages Explained Here

ReferenceReceived wording of the root sutraRelation to the root treatise
The initial specific injunction in “Dharma Teacher”「爾時世尊因藥王菩薩,告八萬大士」 tr. “At that time the World-Honored One, through Bodhisattva Medicine King, addressed eighty thousand great beings” 〔T09n0262 0030b29〕; 「若復有人受持、讀誦、解說、書寫妙法華經」 tr. “if someone receives and upholds, recites, explains, and copies the Wondrous Dharma Lotus Sutra” 〔0030c09–0030c10〕The root treatise says that the twenty thousand were the number specifically enjoined at the beginning of the preceding chapter 〔T34n1718 0117b03〕. The received preceding chapter explicitly has eighty thousand great beings, while twenty thousand first appear in the present chapter. The two are recorded side by side without adjudicating the number.
Chamber, robe, and seat「入如來室,著如來衣,坐如來座」 tr. “enter the Tathāgata’s chamber, put on the Tathāgata’s robe, and sit upon the Tathāgata’s seat” 〔T09n0262 0031c23–0031c24〕; 「如來室者,一切眾生中大慈悲心是;如來衣者,柔和忍辱心是;如來座者,一切法空是。」 tr. “The Tathāgata’s chamber is the mind of great compassion for all sentient beings; the Tathāgata’s robe is the gentle and forbearing mind; the Tathāgata’s seat is the emptiness of all dharmas” 〔0031c25–0031c27〕The root treatise explains, in order, the robe of forbearance, entering the chamber, and sitting upon the seat 〔T34n1718 0117b20–0117b22〕.
The general search in “Beholding the Jeweled Stūpa”「誰能於此娑婆國土廣說妙法華經,今正是時。 tr. “Who can teach the Wondrous Dharma Lotus Sutra extensively in this Sahā land? Now is precisely the time. The Tathāgata will soon enter nirvāṇa and wishes to entrust this Wondrous Dharma Lotus Sutra where there is someone” 〔T09n0262 0033c13–0033c15〕The root treatise says that the eighty myriads of koṭis of nayutas had previously received no specific injunction but were included only in the general search; it also invokes Many Jewels and the emanation buddhas coming from afar to exhort them 〔T34n1718 0117b04、0117b16〕.
“abide upon the ground of forbearance, gentle and compliant, neither suddenly violent nor alarmed in mind” 〔T09n0262 0037a18〕The root treatise explicitly says that its question and answer about the śrāvakas opens the following “Peaceful Practices” chapter 〔T34n1718 0117b11–0117b12〕.

The Mirror further connects this chapter with the “Devadatta” passage 「採菓、汲水、拾薪、設食,乃至以身而為床座——身心無惓,于時奉事。 “gathering fruit, drawing water, collecting firewood, preparing food, and even making his own body a bed and seat—unwearied in body or mind, he served in this way for a thousand years” 〔T09n0262 0034c05–0034c07〕. This is a development in the Wenjuji, not a statement of the root treatise.

C. Explicit Citations in the Root Treatise and Their Received Forms

1. Fascicle Six of the Madhyamāgama

The root treatise cites 「阿蘭若此翻無事,頭陀此翻抖擻。」 tr.Araṇya is rendered here as ‘free from affairs,’ and dhūta as ‘shaking off’” 〔T34n1718 0117b22–0117b23〕. The related received wording in Fascicle Six of T01n0026 is 「無事比丘行於無事,當學敬重而隨順觀。」 tr. “A bhikṣu free from affairs practices amid freedom from affairs and should learn reverent, compliant contemplation” 〔T01n0026 0455a04–0455a05〕. The full phrase translating both names was not found in the present file. Only the wording actually seen is recorded; failure to find the phrase is not used to infer that the citation is erroneous.

2. The Ratnamegha Sutra

The root treatise identifies Fascicle Six of the Ratnamegha Sutra and quotes:

tr. “A bhikṣu dwelling in an araṇya, on seeing a king, prince, brahman, or any other person arrive, calls out: ‘Welcome; please sit here.’ If the visitor sits, the bhikṣu sits with them; if the visitor does not sit, neither does the bhikṣu. He should teach the Dharma and cause the visitor to rejoice.” 〔T34n1718 0117b23–0117b26〕

The corresponding received passage in T16n0658 occurs in Fascicle Five:

tr. “When a king, one equal to a king, princes, brahmans, kṣatriyas, or other people come to a bodhisattva’s araṇya, the bhikṣu calls out: ‘Welcome, great king; you may sit here.’ When the visitor sits, the bodhisattva sits with them; when the visitor does not sit, the bodhisattva does not sit.” 〔T16n0658 0232a15–0232a18〕

It further says:

tr. “If the king has sharp faculties, is gentle and compliant, and is fit to be a vessel of Dharma, various teachings should be taught. If he does not delight in varied teachings, the impermanence of the five desires should be explained so that he knows revulsion. If he does not delight in revulsion, the great compassion, majestic virtue, freedom, and sphere of practice of the buddhas should again be explained.” 〔T16n0658 0232a21–0232a24〕

It ends: 「剎利、婆羅門、邑主、長者及以國人隨宜為說,如是多聞堪法器者,即便為說種種之法;聞已信受,心生悅樂,皆令歡喜。」 tr. “Teach kṣatriyas, brahmans, town leaders, elders, and the people of the realm as appropriate. To those who are learned and fit to be vessels of Dharma, immediately teach various Dharmas; when they have heard, trusted, and accepted them, delight arises in their minds, and all are made to rejoice” 〔T16n0658 0232a24–0232a27〕. The Fascicle Five/Fascicle Six and alianer/alianruo wording differences are recorded side by side.

3. The Long Citation from Fascicle Five of the Madhyamāgama

The root treatise’s passage runs from Bhikṣu Black Teeth’s complaint to the Buddha and Śāriputra’s defense through the five kinds of people and five similes 〔T34n1718 0117c06–0118a01〕. The corresponding received materials in T01n0026 are divided between two adjacent sutras in the same fascicle.

The “Fourth Sutra on the Lion’s Roar” begins: 「有一梵行在於佛前犯相違法,白世尊曰:「今日尊者舍梨子輕慢我已,遊行人間。」」 tr. “A practitioner of the holy life committed a transgression of discord before the Buddha and said to the World-Honored One: ‘Today Venerable Śāriputra treated me with contempt and then traveled among the people’” 〔T01n0026 0452c07–0452c09〕. It further asks: 「舍梨子! “Śāriputra, did you truly treat a practitioner of the holy life with contempt and then travel among the people?” 〔0452c29〕. The root treatise names Bhikṣu Black Teeth and Śāriputra; the received text has an unnamed practitioner of the holy life and the form Shelizi. Both are recorded without alteration.

The root treatise’s six similes and their received counterparts are:

The “Fifth Sutra on the Water Simile” begins: 「我聞如是:一時,佛遊舍衛國,在勝林給孤獨園。 “Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was traveling in Śrāvastī and staying in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park. Venerable Śāriputra then told the bhikṣus: ‘Worthies, I will now teach you the five methods for removing distress. Listen closely, listen closely, and consider them well.’ The bhikṣus received the instruction and listened. Venerable Śāriputra said: ‘What are the five?’” 〔T01n0026 0454a05–0454a08〕. The sequences of the five kinds in the root treatise and the received text are:

The received five similes are, in order, a discarded garment in a dung heap 〔0454a19–0454a20〕, a deep pond covered with grass 〔0454a28〕, water in an ox’s hoofprint 〔0454b07〕, a sick person alone upon the road 〔0454b18–0454b20〕, and a beautiful clear pond 〔0454c07〕. The root treatise continues to be read according to its own order of five persons and five similes.

4. Fascicle Eight of the Vibhāṣā

The root treatise lists seven ways of contemplating an insult and concludes with using emptiness as armor 〔T34n1718 0118a02–0118a11〕. The corresponding received passage in T28n1546 occurs in Fascicle Nine:

Seven approaches in the root treatiseExact received wording in T28n1546loc
Calling sound「阿拘盧奢秦言是罵,拘盧奢秦言喚聲」 tr.A-kuluṣa in the Qin language means insult; kuluṣa in the Qin language means a calling sound”0057a20–0057a21
Base here, praise elsewhere「於此方是卑陋語、於他方是嘆美語」 tr. “In this region it is base speech; in another region it is language of praise”0057a26–0057a27
Reversed graph order「但此諸字次第顛倒言是罵是讚」 tr. “Only according to whether the order of these graphs is reversed does it become insult or praise”0057b03
A small part of element, sense field, and aggregate「以一界少入、一入少入、一陰少入」 tr. “a small inclusion within one element, a small inclusion within one sense field, and a small inclusion within one aggregate”0057b05–0057b06
Accomplished by the insulter「此罵名誰所成就? tr. “By whom is this thing called an insult accomplished: by the insulter or by the one insulted? On investigation, it should be accomplished by the insulter”0057b09–0057b10
One graph and two graphs「若以一字則不成罵、二字則成。 tr. “With one graph it does not constitute an insult; with two it does. No one can utter two graphs at the same time”0057b12–0057b13
Ceasing in the same instant「罵者及我一時同一剎那滅」 tr. “The insulter and I cease at the same time, in the same instant”0057b16

The received text further has 「罵者、受罵者皆悉是空」 tr. “the insulter and the insulted are both entirely empty” 〔T28n1546 0057b18〕 through 「但有諸陰空聚」 tr. “there is only the empty collection of aggregates” 〔0057b20〕. The three fascicle attributions are: Fascicle Eight in the root treatise, Fascicle Ten in the Mirror, and Fascicle Nine in the received text. All three are recorded without adjudication.

5. The Three Feelings Cited as 『十七云』 tr. “The Seventeenth Says”

The root treatise cites:

tr. “Ordinary people and sages both have three feelings; how do they differ? When ordinary people undergo painful feeling, there are two: first, bodily suffering; second, grief and sorrow in the mind, as with three poisoned arrows. Losing pleasure produces anger, obtaining pleasure produces delight, and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling produces delusion. Sages have bodily feeling but no mental feeling: they are not angry at pain, do not crave pleasure, and are not deluded by neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. The three compulsions cannot compel them, and they obtain liberation from those compulsions; hence the difference between ordinary people and sages.” 〔T34n1718 0118a11–0118a17〕

Received parallels include 「觸緣受有二種:有身受、有心受。」 tr. “Feeling conditioned by contact is of two kinds: bodily feeling and mental feeling” 〔T28n1546 0094b06〕 and 「有二受謂身受心受。 tr. “There are two feelings, bodily and mental. There are three feelings: pleasant, painful, and neither painful nor pleasant” 〔T27n1545 0714c06–0714c08〕. The full continuous passage of the root treatise was not found in the T28n1546 or T27n1545 files. That result records only the present bounded search and is not used to judge the citation erroneous.

D. Explicit Mirror Citations and Their Received Classical Forms

Every item in this section is introduced by the Wenjuji and is not written backward as a citation by the root treatise.

Work cited in the MirrorExact Mirror wording and locusReceived form recorded alongside
Collection of the Buddha’s Past Conduct「釋種善覺生於八女,時淨飯王兄弟四人,各納二女。 tr. “Śākya Suprabuddha fathered eight daughters; King Śuddhodana and his three brothers each took two. King Śuddhodana’s consorts were Māyā and Mahāprajāpatī” 〔T34n1719 0314c15–0314c16〕T03n0190 says that the Śākya elder fathered eight daughters 〔0676a10–0676a12〕 and that King Śuddhodana took the two women Yiyi and Dahui 〔0676b04–0676b06〕. The literal personal names differ and are not adjudicated.
Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā「《十住婆沙》明蘭若比丘乃至具五十法,方堪止住,乃至十二頭陀各具十法」 tr. “The Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā explains that an araṇya bhikṣu is fit to dwell there only after possessing as many as fifty dharmas, and that each of the twelve dhūta practices possesses ten dharmas” 〔T34n1719 0315a26–0315a27〕T26n1521 contains practices for dwelling in an araṇya 〔0113b20–0114a21〕, four sets of four dharmas 〔0114a22–0114b08〕, and the twelve dhūta practices with ten benefits for each 〔0114b25–0114c20〕. The exact heading 『具五十法』 tr. “possessing fifty dharmas” was not found in the relevant received domain.
tr. “The Qieyun explains ‘scoop’ as taking with the hands; it is also written simply as ” 〔T34n1719 0315b25–0315b26〕No independent Qieyun text was obtained within the present Taishō domain. A phonetic-gloss parallel in T54n2128 says 「正作匊字書在手曰匊」 tr. “properly written ; the graph book says what is in the hand is called ” 〔0399b12〕 and 「古字兩手撮取也」 tr. “an old graph meaning to gather and take with both hands” 〔0399b12–0399b13〕; it is not presented as the Qieyun’s original sentence.
Great Calming and Contemplation「此借《婆沙》文為所觀境,乃用四句三假觀之」 tr. “This borrows the Vibhāṣā passage as the object contemplated and contemplates it using four propositions and the three kinds of provisional existence” 〔T34n1719 0315c15–0315c16〕; 「具如《止觀》入空無生觀中已說」 tr. “as fully explained in the contemplation of entry into emptiness and nonarising in Calming and Contemplation” 〔0316a05–0316a06〕T46n1911 has 「又於一一假中復有三假,謂:因成假、相續假、相待假。」 tr. “Within each provisional existence there are again three: causal construction, continuity, and mutual dependence” 〔0063a07–0063a08〕 and 「三假四觀逐念檢責,體達虛妄,性相俱空」 tr. “With the three provisional existences and four contemplations, examine each thought and penetrate its falsity; nature and characteristics are both empty” 〔0069b21–0069b22〕. These are recorded only as methodological cross-readings.
Piṇḍola and Sengchou「審如賓頭盧知七年失國,及稠禪師進否為王」 tr. “Indeed, Piṇḍola knew of the loss of the kingdom for seven years, and Chan Master Chou determined whether to advance and become king” 〔T34n1719 0315a24–0315a25〕The biography of Sengchou in T50n2060 says 「昔賓頭盧迎王七步。 tr. “Formerly Piṇḍola went seven steps to meet the king, causing him to lose the kingdom for seven years” 〔0554c07–0554c09〕.

The Mirror further mentions 『羅云之行』 tr. “Rāhula’s practice” 〔0315a22〕 and 『空生之德』 tr. “Subhūti’s virtue” 〔0315a22–0315a23〕 without naming the works on which they are based. This edition therefore does not force a unique received source through an unrestricted personal-name search.

The first seventeen lines are further divided into one line on the time and donning the robe, nine on what must be endured, and seven on the intent of donning the robe. The nine lines on what must be endured are further divided into ordinary people, overweening pride within the gate of the Way, and overweening pride that presumes sagehood.0314c24–0315a08
The araṇya and the improper formIt judges that correct practice is first presented and false practice distinguished next; it examines the latter by the practice of noncontention, the five factors, and the three trainings, and invokes Rāhula, Subhūti, Piṇḍola, Sengchou, and the Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā.0315a09–0315b10
Five persons and five similesIt summarizes them as three with a single good, one wholly good, and one wholly evil; collates the first type; and glosses 『掬』 tr. “scoop” as taking with the hands.0315b11–0315b26
Seven contemplations of insulting speechThrough four propositions, the three kinds of provisional existence, the eight sounds, and causes and conditions, continuity, and mutual dependence, it investigates the lack of own-nature in an insult; it also explicitly classifies the root treatise’s 『用空』 tr. “using emptiness” passage.0315b29–0316a06
Three feelings in ordinary people and sagesIt raises a fascicle-number collation regarding 『十七云』 tr. “the seventeenth says,” supplements the explanations of three and five feelings, and explains the Distinct-Teaching armor through the ten Dharma realms.0316a06–0316a13
Perfect-Teaching armorIt explains recollection of the dharma-buddha by contemplating feeling as the Dharma realm, gathers all the armors by distinguishing the contemplator while holding the contemplated object constant, and finally glosses armor as protective mail.0316a13–0316a17

The Mirror domain contains two inline annotations, presented to readers as 獨無侶、誦所聞〔云云〕 tr. “alone without companions, reciting what one has heard [and so forth]” 〔T34n1719 0315a14–0315a15〕 and 應為略說等〔云云〕 tr. “one should give a brief explanation and so forth [and so forth]” 〔0315a18–0315a19〕. The annotations are not flattened away.

V. Explanations of Various Masters

Within the fixed T34n1718 domain for “Explanation of ‘Upholding’” 〔0117a29–0118a22〕, the actual count of root-treatise markers for recorded alternative explanations—『有人云、或言、舊云、解者不同、一云、有師云』 tr. “someone says, another says, an old explanation says, explanations differ, one says, a master says”—is zero.

The only near-form is 「心不定者或說罵,我心已定云何說罵?」 tr. “A person whose mind is unsettled may insult and censure; my mind is settled, so how could I insult and censure?” 〔T34n1718 0117c08–0117c09〕. Here 『或』 tr. “may” says that an unsettled person may insult; it does not introduce another master’s explanation and is therefore not falsely listed as one.

The Wenjuji separately records 「有本云勸持,義須俱存,隨題皆得」 tr. “One manuscript says ‘Exhortation to Uphold’; both meanings must be retained, and either title is acceptable” 〔T34n1719 0314c09〕. This is a title variant seen by the Mirror, not an alternative explanation recorded by the T1718 root treatise. It is therefore placed in the Mirror section and does not alter the conclusion of the present section.

VI. Terminology

TermMinimum meaning in the root treatise
Upholding / Exhortation to UpholdTwenty thousand bodhisattvas uphold the sutra under a prior specific injunction; eighty myriads of koṭis of nayutas receive the silent exhortation of the Buddha’s gaze and vow to propagate it 〔0117b01–0117b06〕.
Specific injunction / general searchA specific injunction is a particular command previously given; a general search recruits throughout the assembly. “General” here does not establish the name of another teaching 〔0117b03–0117b05〕.
This land / other landsTwenty thousand bodhisattvas uphold the sutra in this land; the five hundred and eight thousand śrāvakas vow to circulate it in other lands 〔0117b08–0117b11〕.
Newly resolved and newly practicingBeginning bodhisattvas not yet able to undergo hardship and propagate the sutra in an evil age 〔0117b10–0117b12〕.
Clothed in the robe of forbearance『被』 tr. “clothed” is read as putting on; the gentle, forbearing mind is taken as the robe, continuing the preceding chapter’s chamber, robe, and seat 〔0117b20;T09n0262 0031c23–0031c27〕.
Alanruo / alianer / alianruoThe literal forms in the root treatise’s citation of the Madhyamāgama, its citation of the Ratnamegha Sutra, and the received root sutra respectively; they are not silently standardized.
Bhikṣu who does not conform to the proper formOne who lives by preaching the precepts but does not delight in practicing them; the same applies to the remaining Dharmas of the fivefold dharma-body 〔0117b26–0117c03〕.
Fivefold dharma-bodyThe root treatise explicitly names only the Dharma of precepts and carries the other four through with 『亦如是』 tr. “likewise.” Their names are not supplied here from memory.
Armor of forbearanceThe armor put on when facing cruel speech, blades and staves, expulsion, and painful illness; the root treatise unfolds it through several sets of contemplations 〔0117c03–0118a22〕.
Tripiṭaka-Teaching armorSuffering, impermanence, impurity, not-self, and emptiness as armor 〔0118a01–0118a02〕.
Using emptiness as armorSeven contemplations of insulting speech, seeing its regional meaning, partial extent, accomplishment, and momentary arising and cessation 〔0118a02–0118a11〕.
Distinct-Teaching armorArmor explained through the presence or absence of mental feeling and of anger, craving, and delusion when ordinary people and sages face the three feelings 〔0118a11–0118a18〕.
Perfect-Teaching armorRecollection of the Buddha as recollection of the dharma-buddha and ultimate meaning; the Buddha is Dharma and Saṅgha, and phenomena and principle are harmonized; one armor is all armor 〔0118a18–0118a22〕.
BroomThe sweeping implement in the root treatise’s simile of forbearance. 『箒』 is the normalized presentation of the gaiji and is not changed to 『帚』 tr. “broom” 〔0117c11–0117c12〕.

VII. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward

The root treatise does not reduce forbearance to gritted-teeth endurance. It changes how injury is seen through a succession of concrete images:

  • An ox with broken horns does not gore and an injured child feels shame: the mind has been tamed and does not answer insult with insult 〔0117c09–0117c10〕;
  • Earth, water, fire, and wind receive clean and unclean things, and a broom sweeps both purity and filth: one does not retaliate according to the object received 〔0117c10–0117c12〕;
  • A broken vessel leaks fat, one’s own nine apertures continually leak impurity, and dead snakes and dogs are bound around the neck: the gaze turns toward one’s own impurity and shame 〔0117c12–0117c15〕;
  • Taking clean cloth from a dung heap, parting grass and scooping water from a pond, drinking from an ox’s hoofprint, placing a sick traveler securely, and entering a cool pond correspond one by one to what may be recollected or compassionately regarded in the five kinds of people 〔0117c16–0118a01〕;
  • Calling sound, regional language, reversed graphs, a small portion, accomplishment on the other side, the prior graph already ceased, and subject and object ceasing together break the solid experience of being insulted back into sounds, graphs, and moments 〔0118a02–0118a11〕.

“Dharma Teacher” uses the Tathāgata’s chamber, robe, and seat to explain the compassion, gentle forbearance, and emptiness of all dharmas in which propagators dwell. The present chapter places the robe of forbearance amid the abuse, blades and staves, and expulsion of an evil age, then returns in its final three lines to entering the chamber, sitting upon the seat, and asking the Buddha to know their minds 〔T09n0262 0031c23–0031c27、0036b21–0037a01〕. The root treatise also expressly says that the śrāvakas’ vow in other lands opens “Peaceful Practices,” setting this chapter’s strenuous endurance alongside the next chapter’s abiding upon the ground of forbearance 〔T34n1718 0117b10–0117b12;T09n0262 0037a18〕.

VIII. Placement of the Editions

A. Taishō / Recension A Variants

The main text of this T34n1718 chapter has ten numbered-anchor critical notes. Each is recorded side by side without adjudicating a preferred reading:

The forms recorded side by side are: 然【大】/absent in recension A; 煩【大】/繁【甲】; 加【大】/知【甲】; 抖擻【大】/斗藪【甲】; 自既【大】/既自【甲】; 茶【大】/荼【甲】; 能【大】/absent in recension A; 瘳【大】/聊【甲】; 不善【大】/惡【甲】; 毘【大】/absent in recension A.

All ten are numbered-anchor <app> notes; there is no asterisk-linked corresp note. The asterisk-linked note in the preceding chapter at 〔0117a27〕 and the notes in the following chapter beginning at 〔0118a23〕 are outside this unit.

B. Inline Notes, Gaiji, and Graph Forms

The T1718 main text contains no inline annotation, so no 〔云云〕 tr. “[and so forth]” is invented. The two inline annotations in the T1719 Mirror domain are presented exactly in Section IV.

The T1718 main text has one gaiji, CB00416, composed as [竺-二+帚], normalized to , and represented by the ordinary Unicode graph U+7B92, 『箒』. The reader layer follows the received source and presents the normalized string 心如掃箒 tr. “the mind is like a broom” 〔T34n1718 0117c11–0117c12〕; it neither uses a Private Use Area graph nor silently replaces it with a modern common form.

C. Page-Anchor Convention

Every locus following a quotation in this unit takes the nearest preceding <lb> before the quotation’s first graph. A quotation crossing lines is anchored at the actual position of its first graph and gives only the endpoint of its range. The chapter title at 〔0117a29〕 and the first sentence of the main text at 〔0117b01〕 remain separate; the title line is not substituted for the actual position of the first graph of the main text. Loci in the critical table follow the body anchor of each <app>, and an absent reading is explicitly written 『甲本缺』 tr. “absent in recension A.”
